स एवमुक्तो द्विपदां वरिष्ठो; नारायणेनोत्तमपूरुषेण। जगाद वाक्यं द्विपदां वरिष्ठं; नारायणं लोकहिताधिवासम् ॥३-३२२-१॥
sa evam-ukto dvipadāṃ variṣṭho; nārāyaṇenottamapūruṣeṇa. jagāda vākyaṃ dvipadāṃ variṣṭhaṃ; nārāyaṇaṃ lokahitādhivāsam ॥3-322-1॥
[स (sa) - he; एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; द्विपदां (dvipadām) - of bipeds; वरिष्ठः (variṣṭhaḥ) - the foremost; नारायणेन (nārāyaṇena) - by Nārāyaṇa; उत्तम (uttama) - supreme; पूरुषेण (pūruṣeṇa) - by the person; जगाद (jagāda) - spoke; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; द्विपदां (dvipadām) - of bipeds; वरिष्ठम् (variṣṭham) - the foremost; नारायणम् (nārāyaṇam) - Nārāyaṇa; लोक (loka) - world; हित (hita) - welfare; अधिवासम् (adhivāsam) - abode;]
(He, thus addressed, the foremost of bipeds, by Nārāyaṇa, the supreme person, spoke speech to the foremost of bipeds, Nārāyaṇa, the abode of the welfare of the world.)
Thus addressed by Nārāyaṇa, the supreme person, the foremost among bipeds spoke these words to Nārāyaṇa, the foremost among bipeds and the abode of the world's welfare. (3-322-1)
यदर्थमात्मप्रभवेह जन्म; तवोत्तमं धर्मगृहे चतुर्धा। तत्साध्यतां लोकहितार्थमद्य; गच्छामि द्रष्टुं प्रकृतिं तवाद्याम् ॥३-३२२-२॥
yadartham ātmaprabhaveha janma; tavottamaṃ dharmagṛhe caturdhā. tatsādhyatāṃ lokahitārtham adya; gacchāmi draṣṭuṃ prakṛtiṃ tavādyām ॥3-322-2॥

For the purpose for which you have taken birth here for self-manifestation, your supreme fourfold form in the house of dharma—let that be accomplished today for the welfare of the world; I go now to see your primordial nature. (3-322-2)
वेदाः स्वधीता मम लोकनाथ; तप्तं तपो नानृतमुक्तपूर्वम्। पूजां गुरूणां सततं करोमि; परस्य गुह्यं न च भिन्नपूर्वम् ॥३-३२२-३॥
vedāḥ svadhītā mama lokanātha; taptaṃ tapo nānṛtamuktapūrvam। pūjāṃ gurūṇāṃ satataṃ karomi; parasya guhyaṃ na ca bhinnapūrvam ॥3-322-3॥
[वेदाः (vedāḥ) - Vedas; स्वधीता (svadhītā) - well-studied; मम (mama) - my; लोकनाथ (lokanātha) - O lord of the world; तप्तं (taptaṃ) - performed; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; न (na) - not; अनृत (anṛta) - falsehood; मुक्तपूर्वम् (muktapūrvam) - ever uttered before; पूजां (pūjāṃ) - worship; गुरूणां (gurūṇāṃ) - of the teachers; सततं (satataṃ) - always; करोमि (karomi) - I do; परस्य (parasya) - of another; गुह्यं (guhyaṃ) - secret; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; भिन्नपूर्वम् (bhinnapūrvam) - ever revealed before;]
(Vedas well-studied my O lord of the world; performed austerity not falsehood ever uttered before. Worship of the teachers always I do; of another secret not and ever revealed before. (3-322-3))
O lord of the world, the Vedas have been well-studied by me; I have performed austerities, never having uttered falsehood before. I always worship my teachers; I have never revealed another's secret before. (3-322-3)
गुप्तानि चत्वारि यथागमं मे; शत्रौ च मित्रे च समोऽस्मि नित्यम्। तं चादिदेवं सततं प्रपन्न; एकान्तभावेन वृणोम्यजस्रम् ॥ एभिर्विशेषैः परिशुद्धसत्त्वः; कस्मान्न पश्येयमनन्तमीशम् ॥३-३२२-४॥
guptāni catvāri yathāgamaṃ me; śatrau ca mitre ca samo'smi nityam. taṃ cādidevaṃ satataṃ prapanna; ekāntabhāvena vṛṇomyajasram ॥ ebhirviśeṣaiḥ pariśuddhasattvaḥ; kasmānna paśyeyamanantamīśam ॥3-322-4॥
[गुप्तानि (guptāni) - hidden; चत्वारि (catvāri) - four; यथागमं (yathāgamaṃ) - according to tradition; मे (me) - my; शत्रौ (śatrau) - in enemy; च (ca) - and; मित्रे (mitre) - in friend; च (ca) - and; समः (samaḥ) - equal; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; तम् (tam) - him; च (ca) - and; आदिदेवं (ādidevaṃ) - the primordial god; सततम् (satatam) - always; प्रपन्नः (prapannaḥ) - one who has taken refuge; एकान्तभावेन (ekāntabhāvena) - with single-minded devotion; वृणोमि (vṛṇomi) - I choose; अजस्रम् (ajasram) - unceasingly; एभिः (ebhiḥ) - by these; विशेषैः (viśeṣaiḥ) - distinctions; परिशुद्धसत्त्वः (pariśuddhasattvaḥ) - one whose essence is purified; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; न (na) - not; पश्येयम् (paśyeyam) - should I not see; अनन्तम् (anantam) - the infinite; ईशम् (īśam) - lord;]
(Hidden four according to tradition my; in enemy and in friend and equal I am always. Him and the primordial god always one who has taken refuge; with single-minded devotion I choose unceasingly. By these distinctions one whose essence is purified; why not should I see the infinite lord. (3-322-4))
According to tradition, I have four hidden qualities; I am always equal towards both enemy and friend. I always take refuge in that primordial god, choosing him with single-minded devotion, unceasingly. तत्पारमेष्ठ्यस्य वचो निशम्य; नारायणः सात्वतधर्मगोप्ता। गच्छेति तं नारदमुक्तवान्स; सम्पूजयित्वात्मविधिक्रियाभिः ॥३-३२२-५॥

(Having heard that speech of Brahmā, Nārāyaṇa, the protector of Sātvata-dharma, said thus to Nārada, "Go"; having worshipped him with self-prescribed rites.)
After hearing Brahmā's words, Nārāyaṇa, the protector of Sātvata-dharma, said to Nārada, "Go"; and, having honored him with his own prescribed rites. (3-322-5)
ततो विसृष्टः परमेष्ठिपुत्रः; सोऽभ्यर्चयित्वा तमृषिं पुराणम्। खमुत्पपातोत्तमवेगयुक्त; स्ततोऽधिमेरौ सहसा निलिल्ये ॥३-३२२-६॥
tato visṛṣṭaḥ parameṣṭhiputraḥ; so'bhyarcayitvā tam ṛṣiṃ purāṇam। kham utpapātottamavegayuktaḥ; tataḥ adhi-merau sahasā nililye ॥3-322-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from then; विसृष्टः (visṛṣṭaḥ) - sent forth; परमेष्ठिपुत्रः (parameṣṭhiputraḥ) - son of Parameṣṭhin (Brahmā); सः (saḥ) - he; अभ्यर्चयित्वा (abhyarcayitvā) - having worshipped; तम् (tam) - that; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - sage; पुराणम् (purāṇam) - ancient; खम् (kham) - sky; उत्पपात (utpapāta) - ascended; उत्तमवेगयुक्तः (uttamavegayuktaḥ) - endowed with excellent speed; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; अधि (adhi) - upon; मेरौ (merau) - on Meru; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; निलिल्ये (nililye) - descended;]
(From then, sent forth, the son of Parameṣṭhin; he, having worshipped that ancient sage, ascended the sky endowed with excellent speed; from there, upon Meru, suddenly descended. (3-322-6))

तत्रावतस्थे च मुनिर्मुहूर्त; मेकान्तमासाद्य गिरेः स शृङ्गे। आलोकयन्नुत्तरपश्चिमेन; ददर्श चात्यद्भुतरूपयुक्तम् ॥३-३२२-७॥
tatrāvatasthe ca munirmuhūrta; mekāntamāsādya gireḥ sa śṛṅge. ālokayannuttharapāścimena; dadarśa cātyadbhutarūpayuktam ॥3-322-7॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अवतस्थे (avatasthe) - stood; च (ca) - and; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - for a moment; एकान्तम् (ekāntam) - solitary place; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; गिरेः (gireḥ) - of the mountain; सः (saḥ) - he; शृङ्गे (śṛṅge) - on the peak; आलोकयन् (ālokayan) - looking; उत्तरपश्चिमेन (uttarapāścimena) - towards the northwest; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; च (ca) - and; अत्यद्भुतरूपयुक्तम् (atyadbhutarūpayuktam) - endowed with a very wonderful form;]
(There stood and the sage for a moment; having reached a solitary place of the mountain he on the peak; looking towards the northwest; he saw and endowed with a very wonderful form.)

क्षीरोदधेरुत्तरतो हि द्वीपः; श्वेतः स नाम्ना प्रथितो विशालः। मेरोः सहस्रैः स हि योजनानां; द्वात्रिंशतोर्ध्वं कविभिर्निरुक्तः ॥३-३२२-८॥
kṣīrodadher uttarato hi dvīpaḥ; śvetaḥ sa nāmnā prathito viśālaḥ. meroḥ sahasraiḥ sa hi yojanānāṃ; dvātriṃśatordhvaṃ kavibhir niruktaḥ ॥3-322-8॥
[क्षीरोदधेः (kṣīrodadheḥ) - of the ocean of milk; उत्तरतः (uttarataḥ) - to the north; हि (hi) - indeed; द्वीपः (dvīpaḥ) - island; श्वेतः (śvetaḥ) - white; स (sa) - he; नाम्ना (nāmnā) - by name; प्रथितः (prathitaḥ) - well-known; विशालः (viśālaḥ) - vast; मेरोः (meroḥ) - of Meru; सहस्रैः (sahasraiḥ) - by thousands; स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; योजनानाम् (yojanānām) - of yojanas; द्वात्रिंशत् (dvātriṃśat) - thirty-two; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - upwards; कविभिः (kavibhiḥ) - by sages; निरुक्तः (niruktaḥ) - described;]
(To the north of the ocean of milk indeed is an island; white, he by name is well-known, vast. Of Meru by thousands he indeed of yojanas, thirty-two upwards, by sages described.)
To the north of the ocean of milk, there is indeed a vast island; it is well-known by the name 'Śveta' (White). It is described by sages as being thirty-two thousand yojanas above Mount Meru. (3-322-8)
अतीन्द्रियाश्चानशनाश्च तत्र; निष्पन्दहीनाः सुसुगन्धिनश्च। श्वेताः पुमांसो गतसर्वपापा; श्चक्षुर्मुषः पापकृतां नराणाम् ॥३-३२२-९॥
atīndriyāś cānaśanāś ca tatra; niṣpandahīnāḥ susugandhinaś ca. śvetāḥ pumāṃso gatasarvapāpāḥ; ścakṣurmuṣaḥ pāpakṛtāṃ narāṇām ॥3-322-9॥
[अतीन्द्रियाः (atīndriyāḥ) - beyond the senses; च (ca) - and; अनशनाः (anaśanāḥ) - not eating; च (ca) - and; तत्र (tatra) - there; निष्पन्दहीनाः (niṣpandahīnāḥ) - devoid of movement; सुसुगन्धिनः (susugandhinaḥ) - very fragrant; च (ca) - and; श्वेताः (śvetāḥ) - white; पुमांसः (pumāṃsaḥ) - men; गतसर्वपापाः (gatasarvapāpāḥ) - gone all sins; चक्षुर्मुषः (cakṣurmuṣaḥ) - stealers of sight; पापकृताम् (pāpakṛtām) - of the evil-doers; नराणाम् (narāṇām) - of men;]
(Beyond the senses and not eating there; devoid of movement, very fragrant and; white men, gone all sins; stealers of sight of the evil-doers among men.)
There, those who are beyond the senses and do not eat, who are motionless and very fragrant, white men who have shed all sins, are the stealers of sight from sinful men. (3-322-9)
वज्रास्थिकायाः सममानोन्माना; दिव्यान्वयरूपाः शुभसारोपेताः। छत्राकृतिशीर्षा मेघौघनिनादाः; सत्पुष्करचतुष्का राजीवशतपादाः ॥३-३२२-१०॥
vajrāsthikāyāḥ samamānonmānā; divyānvayarūpāḥ śubhasāropetāḥ. chatrākṛtiśīrṣā meghaughaninādāḥ; satpuṣkaracatuṣkā rājīvaśatapādāḥ ॥3-322-10॥
[वज्रास्थिकायाः (vajrāsthikāyāḥ) - of one whose bones are like vajra (diamond); सममानोन्माना (samamānonmānā) - having equal height and measurement; दिव्यान्वयरूपाः (divyānvayarūpāḥ) - having divine lineage and form; शुभसारोपेताः (śubhasāropetāḥ) - endowed with auspicious essence; छत्राकृतिशीर्षा (chatrākṛtiśīrṣā) - having heads shaped like umbrellas; मेघौघनिनादाः (meghaughaninādāḥ) - having the sound of a mass of clouds; सत्पुष्करचतुष्का (satpuṣkaracatuṣkā) - having four true lotuses; राजीवशतपादाः (rājīvaśatapādāḥ) - having a hundred lotus-like feet;]
(Of one whose bones are like vajra (diamond); having equal height and measurement; having divine lineage and form; endowed with auspicious essence; having heads shaped like umbrellas; having the sound of a mass of clouds; having four true lotuses; having a hundred lotus-like feet;)

षष्ट्या दन्तैर्युक्ताः शुक्लै; रष्टाभिर्दंष्ट्राभिर्ये। जिह्वाभिर्ये विष्वग्वक्त्रं; लेलिह्यन्ते सूर्यप्रख्यम् ॥३-३२२-११॥
ṣaṣṭyā dantairyuktāḥ śuklai; raṣṭābhirdaṃṣṭrābhirye. jihvābhirye viṣvagvaktraṃ; lelihyante sūryaprakhyam ॥3-322-11॥
[षष्ट्या (ṣaṣṭyā) - by sixty; दन्तैः (dantaiḥ) - with teeth; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - endowed; शुक्लै (śuklai) - white; रष्टाभिः (raṣṭābhiḥ) - with tusks; दंष्ट्राभिः (daṃṣṭrābhiḥ) - with fangs; ये (ye) - who; जिह्वाभिः (jihvābhiḥ) - with tongues; ये (ye) - who; विष्वग्वक्त्रं (viṣvagvaktraṃ) - all-around mouth; लेलिह्यन्ते (lelihyante) - are licking; सूर्यप्रख्यम् (sūryaprakhyam) - sun-like;]
(By sixty with teeth endowed white; with tusks with fangs who; with tongues who all-around mouth; are licking sun-like.)

भक्त्या देवं विश्वोत्पन्नं; यस्मात्सर्वे लोकाः सूताः। वेदा धर्मा मुनयः शान्ता; देवाः सर्वे तस्य विसर्गाः ॥३-३२२-१२॥

atīndriyā nirāhārā aniṣpandāḥ sugandhinaḥ। kathaṁ te puruṣā jātāḥ kā teṣāṁ gatiruttamā ॥3-322-13॥

ये विमुक्ता भवन्तीह नरा भरतसत्तम। तेषां लक्षणमेतद्धि यच्छ्वेतद्वीपवासिनाम् ॥३-३२२-१४॥
ye vimuktā bhavantīha narā bharatasattama। teṣāṃ lakṣaṇametaddhi yacchvetadvīpavāsinām ॥3-322-14॥

(Who are liberated men here, O best of the Bharatas, of them this indeed is the characteristic which is of the inhabitants of Śvetadvīpa.)

तस्मान्मे संशयं छिन्धि परं कौतूहलं हि मे। त्वं हि सर्वकथारामस्त्वां चैवोपाश्रिता वयम् ॥३-३२२-१५॥
tasmān me saṁśayaṁ chindhi paraṁ kautūhalaṁ hi me। tvaṁ hi sarvakathārāmas tvāṁ caivopāśritā vayam ॥3-322-15॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; मे (me) - my; संशयम् (saṁśayam) - doubt; छिन्धि (chindhi) - cut; परम् (param) - supreme; कौतूहलम् (kautūhalam) - curiosity; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - my; त्वम् (tvam) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; सर्वकथारामः (sarvakathārāmaḥ) - delighter in all stories; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; उपाश्रिताः (upāśritāḥ) - taken refuge; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(Therefore my doubt cut, supreme curiosity indeed my. You indeed delighter in all stories, you and indeed taken refuge we.)
Therefore, dispel my doubt and my supreme curiosity. You are indeed the delighter in all stories; we have indeed taken refuge in you. (3-322-15)

विस्तीर्णैषा कथा राजञ्श्रुता मे पितृसंनिधौ। सैषा तव हि वक्तव्या कथासारो हि स स्मृतः ॥३-३२२-१६॥
vistīrṇaiṣā kathā rājañśrutā me pitṛsaṃnidhau। saiṣā tava hi vaktavyā kathāsāro hi sa smṛtaḥ ॥3-322-16॥

काम्यनैमित्तिकाजस्रं यज्ञियाः परमक्रियाः। सर्वाः सात्वतमास्थाय विधिं चक्रे समाहितः ॥३-३२२-२३॥
kāmyanaimittikājasraṃ yajñiyāḥ paramakriyāḥ। sarvāḥ sātvatamāsthāya vidhiṃ cakre samāhitaḥ ॥3-322-23॥

मरीचिरत्र्यङ्गिरसौ पुलस्त्यः पुलहः क्रतुः। वसिष्ठश्च महातेजा एते चित्रशिखण्डिनः ॥३-३२२-२७॥

सप्त प्रकृतयो ह्येतास्तथा स्वायम्भुवोऽष्टमः। एताभिर्धार्यते लोकस्ताभ्यः शास्त्रं विनिःसृतम् ॥३-३२२-२८॥
sapta prakṛtayo hy etās tathā svāyambhuvo'ṣṭamaḥ। etābhir dhāryate lokas tābhyaḥ śāstraṃ viniḥsṛtam ॥3-322-28॥

(Seven natures indeed these thus descended from Svayambhu the eighth; by these is supported the world; from these the treatise issued forth.)
These are the seven natures, and the eighth is the Svayambhu. By these, the world is supported, and from them, the treatise has issued forth. (3-322-28)
एकाग्रमनसो दान्ता मुनयः संयमे रताः। इदं श्रेय इदं ब्रह्म इदं हितमनुत्तमम् ॥ लोकान्सञ्चिन्त्य मनसा ततः शास्त्रं प्रचक्रिरे ॥३-३२२-२९॥
ekāgramanaso dāntā munayaḥ saṃyame ratāḥ। idaṃ śreya idaṃ brahma idaṃ hitamanuttamam ॥ lokānsañcintya manasā tataḥ śāstraṃ pracakrire ॥3-322-29॥

(Of single-pointed mind, self-restrained, sages engaged in self-control: this is the highest good, this is Brahman, this is the unsurpassed benefit. Having considered the worlds with the mind, then they composed the treatise. (3-322-29))
The sages, possessing single-pointed minds and self-restraint, devoted to self-control, declared: "This is the highest good, this is Brahman, this is the supreme benefit." After contemplating the worlds with their minds, they then composed the treatise. (3-322-29)
तत्र धर्मार्थकामा हि मोक्षः पश्चाच्च कीर्तितः। मर्यादा विविधाश्चैव दिवि भूमौ च संस्थिताः ॥३-३२२-३०॥

आराध्य तपसा देवं हरिं नारायणं प्रभुम्। दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रं वै सर्वे ते ऋषिभिः सह ॥३-३२२-३१॥

(Having worshipped by austerity the god Hari Nārāyaṇa the lord, for a divine thousand years indeed, all they together with sages.)
All of them, together with the sages, worshipped the god Hari Nārāyaṇa, the lord, by austerity for a divine thousand years. (3-322-31)
नारायणानुशास्ता हि तदा देवी सरस्वती। विवेश तानृषीन्सर्वाँल्लोकानां हितकाम्यया ॥३-३२२-३२॥
nārāyaṇānuśāstā hi tadā devī sarasvatī। viveśa tān ṛṣīn sarvān lokānāṃ hitakāmyayā ॥3-322-32॥

(Nārāyaṇa instructor indeed then goddess Sarasvatī entered those sages all of the worlds for the welfare with the desire.)
Then, the goddess Sarasvatī, the instructor of Nārāyaṇa, indeed entered all those sages with the desire for the welfare of the worlds. (3-322-32)
ततः प्रवर्तिता सम्यक्तपोविद्भिर्द्विजातिभिः। शब्दे चार्थे च हेतौ च एषा प्रथमसर्गजा ॥३-३२२-३३॥
tataḥ pravartitā samyaktapovidbhirdvijātibhiḥ। śabde cārthe ca hetau ca eṣā prathamasargajā ॥3-322-33॥

ततः प्रसन्नो भगवाननिर्दिष्टशरीरगः। ऋषीनुवाच तान्सर्वानदृश्यः पुरुषोत्तमः ॥३-३२२-३५॥
tataḥ prasanno bhagavān anirdiṣṭaśarīragaḥ। ṛṣīn uvāca tān sarvān adṛśyaḥ puruṣottamaḥ ॥3-322-35॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; प्रसन्नः (prasannaḥ) - pleased; clear; gracious; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; the blessed one; अनिर्दिष्टशरीरगः (anirdiṣṭaśarīragaḥ) - one who goes with an unmanifested body; of undefined form; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - the sages; उवाच (uvāca) - said; spoke; तान् (tān) - them; those; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अदृश्यः (adṛśyaḥ) - unseen; invisible; पुरुषोत्तमः (puruṣottamaḥ) - the supreme person; the highest man;]
(Then, the pleased Lord, of unmanifested body, said to all those sages, unseen, the Supreme Person.)
Then, the pleased Lord, the Supreme Person of unmanifested form, unseen, spoke to all those sages. (3-322-35)
कृतं शतसहस्रं हि श्लोकानामिदमुत्तमम्। लोकतन्त्रस्य कृत्स्नस्य यस्माद्धर्मः प्रवर्तते ॥३-३२२-३६॥
kṛtaṃ śatasahasraṃ hi ślokānām idam uttamam। lokatantrasya kṛtsnasya yasmād dharmaḥ pravartate ॥3-322-36॥
[कृतं (kṛtam) - done; accomplished; शतसहस्रं (śatasahasram) - one hundred thousand; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; श्लोकानाम् (ślokānām) - of verses; इदम् (idam) - this; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - best; highest; लोकतन्त्रस्य (lokatantrasya) - of the world-system; of the social order; कृत्स्नस्य (kṛtsnasya) - of the whole; of all; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - from which; because of which; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; righteousness; law; प्रवर्तते (pravartate) - proceeds; arises; is set in motion;]
(Done is one hundred thousand indeed of verses; this best; of the world-system of the whole from which dharma proceeds;)
Indeed, one hundred thousand verses have been composed; this is the best, from which the dharma of the entire world-system arises. (3-322-36)
प्रवृत्तौ च निवृत्तौ च योनिरेतद्भविष्यति। ऋग्यजुःसामभिर्जुष्टमथर्वाङ्गिरसैस्तथा ॥३-३२२-३७॥
pravṛttau ca nivṛttau ca yonir etad bhaviṣyati। ṛg-yajuḥ-sāmabhir juṣṭam atharvāṅgirasaīs tathā ॥3-322-37॥
[प्रवृत्तौ (pravṛttau) - in activity; च (ca) - and; निवृत्तौ (nivṛttau) - in cessation; च (ca) - and; योनि (yoni) - source; एतत् (etat) - this; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; ऋग् (ṛg) - Ṛg (Veda); यजुः (yajuḥ) - Yajur (Veda); सामभिः (sāmabhiḥ) - with Sāma (Veda); जुष्टम् (juṣṭam) - endowed; अथर्वाङ्गिरसैः (atharvāṅgirasaīḥ) - with Atharvāṅgiras (Veda); तथा (tathā) - thus;]
(In activity and in cessation and source this will be; with Ṛg, Yajur, Sāma endowed, with Atharvāṅgiras thus.)
This will be the source both in activity and in cessation, endowed with the Ṛg, Yajur, and Sāma Vedas, as well as with the Atharvāṅgiras. (3-322-37)
तथा प्रमाणं हि मया कृतो ब्रह्मा प्रसादजः। रुद्रश्च क्रोधजो विप्रा यूयं प्रकृतयस्तथा ॥३-३२२-३८॥
tathā pramāṇaṃ hi mayā kṛto brahmā prasādajaḥ। rudraś ca krodhajo viprā yūyaṃ prakṛtayas tathā ॥3-322-38॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; in this way; प्रमाणं (pramāṇam) - authority; proof; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; मया (mayā) - by me; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; done; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; प्रसादजः (prasādajaḥ) - born of grace; रुद्रः (rudraḥ) - Rudra; च (ca) - and; क्रोधजः (krodhajaḥ) - born of anger; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; sages; यूयम् (yūyam) - you (plural); प्रकृतयः (prakṛtayaḥ) - natures; original beings; तथा (tathā) - thus; in this way;]
(Thus authority indeed by me made Brahmā born of grace; Rudra and born of anger; Brāhmaṇas you natures thus.)
Thus, indeed, as authority, Brahmā was created by me, born of grace; Rudra, born of anger; and you Brāhmaṇas, you are also of such natures. (3-322-38)
सूर्याचन्द्रमसौ वायुर्भूमिरापोऽग्निरेव च। सर्वे च नक्षत्रगणा यच्च भूताभिशब्दितम् ॥३-३२२-३९॥
sūryācandramasau vāyurbhūmirāpo'gnireva ca। sarve ca nakṣatragaṇā yac ca bhūtābhiśabditam ॥3-322-39॥
[सूर्य (sūrya) - sun; चन्द्रमसौ (candramasau) - and the two moons; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - earth; आपः (āpaḥ) - waters; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; सर्वे (sarve) - all; च (ca) - and; नक्षत्रगणाः (nakṣatragaṇāḥ) - groups of stars; यत् (yat) - whatever; च (ca) - and; भूताभि (bhūtābhi) - by beings; शब्दितम् (śabditam) - called;]
(sun; and the two moons; wind; earth; waters; fire; indeed; and; all; and; groups of stars; whatever; and; by beings; called;)
The sun, the two moons, wind, earth, waters, fire indeed, and all the groups of stars, and whatever is called by beings. (3-322-39)
अधिकारेषु वर्तन्ते यथास्वं ब्रह्मवादिनः। सर्वे प्रमाणं हि यथा तथैतच्छास्त्रमुत्तमम् ॥३-३२२-४०॥
adhikāreṣu vartante yathā-svaṃ brahmavādinaḥ। sarve pramāṇaṃ hi yathā tatha etac-chāstram uttamam ॥3-322-40॥
[अधिकारेषु (adhikāreṣu) - in authorities; in positions; in offices; वर्तन्ते (vartante) - they exist; they act; they behave; यथास्वं (yathāsvam) - according to their own; as per their own; ब्रह्मवादिनः (brahmavādinaḥ) - speakers on Brahman; expounders of Brahman; सर्वे (sarve) - all; everyone; प्रमाणं (pramāṇam) - authority; means of proof; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; यथा (yathā) - as; just as; तथ (tatha) - so; thus; एतच्छास्त्रम् (etac-chāstram) - this scripture; this treatise; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - the highest; the best;]
(In authorities they exist according to their own, speakers on Brahman. All indeed authority as so this scripture the highest.)
The expounders of Brahman occupy their respective positions of authority. For all, this scripture is indeed the highest authority. (3-322-40)
भविष्यति प्रमाणं वै एतन्मदनुशासनम्। अस्मात्प्रवक्ष्यते धर्मान्मनुः स्वायम्भुवः स्वयम् ॥३-३२२-४१॥
bhaviṣyati pramāṇaṃ vai etan mad-anuśāsanam। asmāt pravakṣyate dharmān manuḥ svāyambhuvaḥ svayam ॥3-322-41॥
[भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; प्रमाणम् (pramāṇam) - authority; वै (vai) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; मत् (mat) - my; अनुशासनम् (anuśāsanam) - instruction; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this; प्रवक्ष्यते (pravakṣyate) - is declared; धर्मान् (dharmān) - dharmas; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; स्वायम्भुवः (svāyambhuvaḥ) - descendant of Svayambhū; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself;]
(Will become authority indeed this my instruction. From this are declared dharmas by Manu, descendant of Svayambhū, himself.)
This instruction of mine will indeed become the authority. From this, Manu, the descendant of Svayambhū, himself declares the dharmas. (3-322-41)
उशना बृहस्पतिश्चैव यदोत्पन्नौ भविष्यतः। तदा प्रवक्ष्यतः शास्त्रं युष्मन्मतिभिरुद्धृतम् ॥३-३२२-४२॥
uśanā bṛhaspatiś caiva yad utpannau bhaviṣyataḥ। tadā pravakṣyataḥ śāstraṃ yuṣman-matibhir uddhṛtam ॥3-322-42॥
[उशना (uśanā) - Uśanā; (the sage Śukra); बृहस्पतिः (bṛhaspatiḥ) - Bṛhaspati; (the sage Bṛhaspati); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; यद् (yad) - when; उत्पन्नौ (utpannau) - arisen; (dual, both have appeared); भविष्यतः (bhaviṣyataḥ) - will be; (dual, both will be); तदा (tadā) - then; प्रवक्ष्यतः (pravakṣyataḥ) - will declare; (dual, both will speak); शास्त्रं (śāstram) - treatise; (scripture); युष्मन् (yuṣman) - your; मतिभिः (matibhiḥ) - by intellects; (by understandings); उद्धृतम् (uddhṛtam) - raised up; (brought forth);]
(Uśanā and Bṛhaspati indeed, when both have arisen, will be; then both will declare the treatise raised up by your intellects.)
When Uśanā and Bṛhaspati are born in the future, then they will declare the treatise that has been brought forth by your intellects. (3-322-42)
स्वायम्भुवेषु धर्मेषु शास्त्रे चोशनसा कृते। बृहस्पतिमते चैव लोकेषु प्रविचारिते ॥३-३२२-४३॥
svāyambhuveṣu dharmeṣu śāstre cośanasā kṛte। bṛhaspatimate caiva lokeṣu pravicārite ॥3-322-43॥
[स्वायम्भुवेषु (svāyambhuveṣu) - in the codes of Manu (Svāyambhuva); धर्मेषु (dharmeṣu) - in the dharmas; शास्त्रे (śāstre) - in the śāstra; च (ca) - and; उशनसा (uśanasā) - by Uśanas (Śukra); कृते (kṛte) - composed; बृहस्पतिमते (bṛhaspatimate) - in the doctrine of Bṛhaspati; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; प्रविचारिते (pravicārite) - having been examined;]
(In the codes of Manu, in the dharmas, in the śāstra, and in the treatise composed by Uśanas, and in the doctrine of Bṛhaspati, indeed, having been examined in the worlds.)
Having examined the codes of Manu, the dharmas, the śāstra, the treatise composed by Uśanas, and the doctrine of Bṛhaspati in the worlds, (3-322-43)
युष्मत्कृतमिदं शास्त्रं प्रजापालो वसुस्ततः। बृहस्पतिसकाशाद्वै प्राप्स्यते द्विजसत्तमाः ॥३-३२२-४४॥
yuṣmatkṛtam idaṃ śāstraṃ prajāpālo vasus tataḥ। bṛhaspati-sakāśād vai prāpsyate dvijasattamāḥ ॥3-322-44॥
[युष्मत् (yuṣmat) - by you; by you all; कृतम् (kṛtam) - made; done; इदं (idaṃ) - this; शास्त्रं (śāstram) - treatise; scripture; प्रजापालः (prajāpālaḥ) - protector of people; king; वसुः (vasuḥ) - Vasu; (a name, here a proper noun); ततः (tataḥ) - from that; thereafter; बृहस्पतिसकाशात् (bṛhaspati-sakāśāt) - from the presence of Bṛhaspati; वै (vai) - indeed; प्राप्स्यते (prāpsyate) - will obtain; will receive; द्विजसत्तमाः (dvijasattamāḥ) - O best of twice-born;]
(This treatise made by you, the protector of people Vasu, thereafter from the presence of Bṛhaspati indeed will obtain, O best of twice-born.)
O best of the twice-born, this treatise made by you will be received by King Vasu, the protector of the people, from Bṛhaspati. (3-322-44)
स हि मद्भावितो राजा मद्भक्तश्च भविष्यति। तेन शास्त्रेण लोकेषु क्रियाः सर्वाः करिष्यति ॥३-३२२-४५॥
sa hi madbhāvito rājā madbhaktaś ca bhaviṣyati। tena śāstreṇa lokeṣu kriyāḥ sarvāḥ kariṣyati ॥3-322-45॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; मद्भावितः (madbhāvitaḥ) - honored by me; राजा (rājā) - king; मद्भक्तः (madbhaktaḥ) - devoted to me; च (ca) - and; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; तेन (tena) - by him; शास्त्रेण (śāstreṇa) - by the śāstra; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; क्रियाः (kriyāḥ) - actions; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will perform;]
(He indeed, honored by me, the king, devoted to me, and, will become. By him, by the śāstra, in the worlds, actions, all, will perform.)
He, indeed, honored by me, will become a king devoted to me. By him, all actions in the worlds will be performed according to the śāstra. (3-322-45)
एतद्धि सर्वशास्त्राणां शास्त्रमुत्तमसञ्ज्ञितम्। एतदर्थ्यं च धर्म्यं च यशस्यं चैतदुत्तमम् ॥३-३२२-४६॥
etaddhi sarvaśāstrāṇāṃ śāstramuttamasañjñitam। etadarthyaṃ ca dharmyaṃ ca yaśasyaṃ caitaduttamam ॥3-322-46॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; सर्वशास्त्राणाम् (sarvaśāstrāṇām) - of all treatises; शास्त्रम् (śāstram) - treatise; उत्तमसञ्ज्ञितम् (uttamasañjñitam) - designated as the highest; एतदर्थ्यम् (etadarthyam) - this is purposeful; च (ca) - and; धर्म्यम् (dharmyam) - righteous; च (ca) - and; यशस्यम् (yaśasyam) - glorious; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - the highest;]
(This indeed, of all treatises, is the treatise designated as the highest; this is purposeful and righteous and glorious and this is the highest.)
Indeed, among all treatises, this is regarded as the highest; it is purposeful, righteous, and glorious, and it is the best. (3-322-46)
अस्य प्रवर्तनाच्चैव प्रजावन्तो भविष्यथ। स च राजा श्रिया युक्तो भविष्यति महान्वसुः ॥३-३२२-४७॥
asya pravartanāccaiva prajāvanto bhaviṣyatha। sa ca rājā śriyā yukto bhaviṣyati mahānvasuḥ ॥3-322-47॥
[अस्य (asya) - of this; प्रवर्तनात् (pravartanāt) - from the instigation; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रजावन्तः (prajāvantaḥ) - possessing offspring; भविष्यथ (bhaviṣyatha) - you will become; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; राजा (rājā) - king; श्रिया (śriyā) - with prosperity; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - endowed; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - he will become; महान् (mahān) - great; वसुः (vasuḥ) - wealthy;]
(Of this from the instigation and indeed possessing offspring you will become. He and the king with prosperity endowed he will become great wealthy.)
By this instigation, you will indeed become those possessing offspring. And that king, endowed with prosperity, will become greatly wealthy. (3-322-47)
संस्थिते तु नृपे तस्मिञ्शास्त्रमेतत्सनातनम्। अन्तर्धास्यति तत्सत्यमेतद्वः कथितं मया ॥३-३२२-४८॥
saṃsthite tu nṛpe tasmiñ śāstram etat sanātanam। antardhāsyati tat satyam etad vaḥ kathitaṃ mayā ॥3-322-48॥
[संस्थिते (saṃsthite) - when established; तु (tu) - but; नृपे (nṛpe) - king; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; शास्त्रम् (śāstram) - treatise; एतत् (etat) - this; सनातनम् (sanātanam) - eternal; अन्तर्धास्यति (antardhāsyati) - will disappear; तत् (tat) - that; सत्यम् (satyam) - truth; एतत् (etat) - this; वः (vaḥ) - to you; कथितम् (kathitam) - told; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(When the king is established but in that, this eternal treatise will disappear; that is truth, this has been told to you by me.)
But when the king is established, this eternal treatise will disappear in that time; this is the truth, this has been told to you by me. (3-322-48)
एतावदुक्त्वा वचनमदृश्यः पुरुषोत्तमः। विसृज्य तानृषीन्सर्वान्कामपि प्रस्थितो दिशम् ॥३-३२२-४९॥
etāvad uktvā vacanam adṛśyaḥ puruṣottamaḥ। visṛjya tān ṛṣīn sarvān kām api prasthito diśam ॥3-322-49॥
[एतावत् (etāvat) - so much; to this extent; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; statement; अदृश्यः (adṛśyaḥ) - unseen; invisible; पुरुषोत्तमः (puruṣottamaḥ) - the supreme person; best among men; विसृज्य (visṛjya) - having left; having released; तान् (tān) - those; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - sages; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; काम् (kām) - any; whatsoever; अपि (api) - even; also; प्रस्थितः (prasthitaḥ) - departed; set out; दिशम् (diśam) - direction;]
(So much having spoken speech, unseen the supreme person, having left those sages all, even any, departed direction.)
Having spoken thus, the supreme person became invisible; leaving all those sages, he departed in some direction. (3-322-49)
ततस्ते लोकपितरः सर्वलोकार्थचिन्तकाः। प्रावर्तयन्त तच्छास्त्रं धर्मयोनिं सनातनम् ॥३-३२२-५०॥
tataste lokapītaraḥ sarvalokārthacintakāḥ। prāvartayanta tacchāstraṃ dharmayoniṃ sanātanam ॥3-322-50॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; लोकपितरः (lokapītaraḥ) - progenitors of the worlds; सर्वलोकार्थचिन्तकाः (sarvalokārthacintakāḥ) - those who consider the welfare of all worlds; प्रावर्तयन्त (prāvartayanta) - set in motion; तत् (tat) - that; शास्त्रं (śāstraṃ) - treatise; धर्मयोनिम् (dharmayonim) - source of dharma; सनातनम् (sanātanam) - eternal;]
(Then they, the progenitors of the worlds, those who consider the welfare of all worlds, set in motion that treatise, the eternal source of dharma.)
Then those progenitors of the worlds, who care for the welfare of all beings, established that treatise, the eternal source of dharma. (3-322-50)
उत्पन्नेऽऽङ्गिरसे चैव युगे प्रथमकल्पिते। साङ्गोपनिषदं शास्त्रं स्थापयित्वा बृहस्पतौ ॥३-३२२-५१॥
utpanne''ṅgirase caiva yuge prathamakalpite। sāṅgopaniṣadaṃ śāstraṃ sthāpayitvā bṛhaspatau॥3-322-51॥
[उत्पन्ने (utpanne) - having arisen; ऽऽङ्गिरसे (''ṅgirase) - in the Aṅgiras (manvantara); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; युगे (yuge) - in the age; प्रथमकल्पिते (prathamakalpite) - firstly established; साङ्गोपनिषदं (sāṅgopaniṣadam) - with limbs and Upaniṣads; शास्त्रं (śāstram) - treatise; स्थापयित्वा (sthāpayitvā) - having established; बृहस्पतौ (bṛhaspatau) - in Bṛhaspati;]
(Having arisen in the Aṅgiras age, indeed, in the age firstly established, having established the treatise with limbs and Upaniṣads in Bṛhaspati.)
When the Aṅgiras age first arose, having established the treatise complete with its limbs and Upaniṣads in Bṛhaspati. (3-322-51)
जग्मुर्यथेप्सितं देशं तपसे कृतनिश्चयाः। धारणात्सर्वलोकानां सर्वधर्मप्रवर्तकाः ॥३-३२२-५२॥
jagmur yathepsitaṃ deśaṃ tapase kṛta-niścayāḥ। dhāraṇāt sarva-lokānāṃ sarva-dharma-pravartakāḥ ॥3-322-52॥
[जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they went; यथ-इप्सितम् (yatha-ipsitam) - as desired; देशम् (deśam) - place; तपसे (tapase) - for austerity; कृत-निश्चयाः (kṛta-niścayāḥ) - having made a resolve; धारणात् (dhāraṇāt) - by sustaining; सर्व-लोकानाम् (sarva-lokānām) - of all worlds; सर्व-धर्म-प्रवर्तकाः (sarva-dharma-pravartakāḥ) - promoters of all dharmas;]
(They went as desired to the place for austerity, having made a resolve; by sustaining all worlds, promoters of all dharmas. (3-322-52))
Having firmly resolved, they went to the place of their choice for austerities; sustaining all worlds, they were the promoters of all dharmas. (3-322-52)
