यदा भक्तो भगवत आसीद्राजा महावसुः। किमर्थं स परिभ्रष्टो विवेश विवरं भुवः ॥३-३२४-१॥
yadā bhakto bhagavata āsīdrājā mahāvasuḥ। kimarthaṃ sa paribhraṣṭo viveśa vivaraṃ bhuvaḥ ॥3-324-1॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; भक्तः (bhaktaḥ) - devoted one; भगवत् (bhagavat) - of the Lord; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; राजा (rājā) - king; महावसुः (mahāvasuḥ) - Mahāvasu; किमर्थं (kimarthaṃ) - for what reason; स (sa) - he; परिभ्रष्टः (paribhraṣṭaḥ) - fallen; विवेश (viveśa) - entered; विवरं (vivaraṃ) - cavity; भुवः (bhuvaḥ) - of the earth;]
(When the devoted one of the Lord, king Mahāvasu, was, for what reason did he, fallen, enter the cavity of the earth?)
When the devotee of the Lord, King Mahāvasu, was present, for what reason did he, having fallen, enter the cavity of the earth? (3-324-1)

अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। ऋषीणां चैव संवादं त्रिदशानां च भारत ॥३-३२४-२॥
atrāpy udāharantīmam itihāsaṃ purātanam। ṛṣīṇāṃ caiva saṃvādaṃ tridaśānāṃ ca bhārata ॥3-324-2॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; अपि (api) - also; उदाहरन्ति (udāharanti) - they cite; इमम् (imam) - this; इतिहासम् (itihāsam) - history; पुरातनम् (purātanam) - ancient; ऋषीणाम् (ṛṣīṇām) - of the sages; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; संवादम् (saṃvādam) - dialogue; त्रिदशानाम् (tridaśānām) - of the gods; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]

अजेन यष्टव्यमिति देवाः प्राहुर्द्विजोत्तमान्। स च छागो ह्यजो ज्ञेयो नान्यः पशुरिति स्थितिः ॥३-३२४-३॥
ajena yaṣṭavyam iti devāḥ prāhur dvijottamān। sa ca chāgo hy ajo jñeyo nānyaḥ paśur iti sthitiḥ ॥3-324-3॥
[अजेन (ajena) - by the goat; यष्टव्यम् (yaṣṭavyam) - should be sacrificed; इति (iti) - thus; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - said; द्विजोत्तमान् (dvijottamān) - to the best of twice-born; स (sa) - that; च (ca) - and; छागः (chāgaḥ) - the sheep; हि (hi) - indeed; अजः (ajaḥ) - the goat; ज्ञेयः (jñeyaḥ) - should be known; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; पशुः (paśuḥ) - animal; इति (iti) - thus; स्थितिः (sthitiḥ) - rule;]
(By the goat should be sacrificed thus the gods said to the best of twice-born. That and the sheep indeed the goat should be known, not other animal thus (is) the rule.)
The gods said to the best of the twice-born: "The sacrifice should be performed with a goat." That goat is to be understood as the sheep and the goat, not any other animal—this is the rule. (3-324-3)
ऋषय ऊचुः॥

The sages said.
बीजैर्यज्ञेषु यष्टव्यमिति वै वैदिकी श्रुतिः। अजसञ्ज्ञानि बीजानि छागं न घ्नन्तुमर्हथ ॥३-३२४-४॥
bījairyajñeṣu yaṣṭavyamiti vai vaidikī śrutiḥ। ajasañjñāni bījāni chāgaṃ na ghnantumarhatha ॥3-324-4॥
[बीजैः (bījaiḥ) - by seeds; यज्ञेषु (yajñeṣu) - in sacrifices; यष्टव्यम् (yaṣṭavyam) - should be offered; इति (iti) - thus; वै (vai) - indeed; वैदिकी (vaidikī) - Vedic; श्रुतिः (śrutiḥ) - revelation; अजसञ्ज्ञानि (ajasañjñāni) - having the designation 'aja' (goat); बीजानि (bījāni) - seeds; छागम् (chāgam) - goat; न (na) - not; घ्नन्तुम् (ghnantum) - to kill; अर्हथ (arhatha) - you ought;]
(By seeds in sacrifices should be offered thus indeed Vedic revelation; having the designation 'aja' seeds goat not to kill you ought (3-324-4))
The Vedic revelation states: "One should offer seeds in sacrifices." The seeds called 'aja' should not be taken to mean a goat; you ought not to kill the goat. (3-324-4)
नैष धर्मः सतां देवा यत्र वध्येत वै पशुः। इदं कृतयुगं श्रेष्ठं कथं वध्येत वै पशुः ॥३-३२४-५॥
naiṣa dharmaḥ satāṃ devā yatra vadhyeta vai paśuḥ। idaṃ kṛtayugaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ kathaṃ vadhyeta vai paśuḥ ॥3-324-5॥
[नैष (naiṣa) - not this; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; सतां (satāṃ) - of the good; देवा (devā) - O gods; यत्र (yatra) - where; वध्येत (vadhyeta) - would be killed; वै (vai) - indeed; पशुः (paśuḥ) - animal; इदं (idaṃ) - this; कृतयुगं (kṛtayugaṃ) - Kṛta Yuga; श्रेष्ठं (śreṣṭhaṃ) - excellent; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; वध्येत (vadhyeta) - would be killed; वै (vai) - indeed; पशुः (paśuḥ) - animal;]
(Not this righteousness of the good, O gods, where an animal would be killed indeed. This Kṛta Yuga is excellent; how would an animal be killed indeed?)
O gods, this is not the righteousness of the virtuous, where an animal would be killed. This Kṛta Yuga is excellent; how could an animal be killed in it? (3-324-5)
भीष्म उवाच॥

तेषां संवदतामेवमृषीणां विबुधैः सह। मार्गागतो नृपश्रेष्ठस्तं देशं प्राप्तवान्वसुः ॥ अन्तरिक्षचरः श्रीमान्समग्रबलवाहनः ॥३-३२४-६॥
teṣāṃ saṃvadatāmevam ṛṣīṇāṃ vibudhaiḥ saha। mārgāgato nṛpaśreṣṭhas taṃ deśaṃ prāptavān vasuḥ॥ antarikṣacaraḥ śrīmān samagrabalavāhanaḥ॥3-324-6॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; संवदताम् (saṃvadatām) - of those conversing; एवम् (evam) - thus; ऋषीणां (ṛṣīṇām) - of sages; विबुधैः (vibudhaiḥ) - with the wise; सह (saha) - together with; मार्गागतः (mārgāgataḥ) - having come on the path; नृपश्रेष्ठः (nṛpaśreṣṭhaḥ) - the best of kings; तं (taṃ) - that; देशम् (deśam) - place; प्राप्तवान् (prāptavān) - had reached; वसुः (vasuḥ) - Vasu; अन्तरिक्षचरः (antarikṣacaraḥ) - moving in the sky; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - prosperous; समग्रबलवाहनः (samagrabalavāhanaḥ) - having all forces and vehicles;]
(Of them, of those conversing thus, of sages, with the wise, together with, having come on the path, the best of kings, that place, had reached, Vasu; moving in the sky, prosperous, having all forces and vehicles.)
While those sages were thus conversing together with the wise, the best of kings, Vasu, who moved in the sky, prosperous and possessing all forces and vehicles, arrived at that place. (3-324-6)
तं दृष्ट्वा सहसायान्तं वसुं ते त्वन्तरिक्षगम्। ऊचुर्द्विजातयो देवानेष छेत्स्यति संशयम् ॥३-३२४-७॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā sahasāyāntaṃ vasuṃ te tvantarikṣagam। ūcurdvijātayo devāneṣa chetsyati saṃśayam ॥3-324-7॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; आयान्तं (āyāntam) - approaching; वसुं (vasum) - Vasu (divine being); ते (te) - they; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अन्तरिक्षगम् (antarikṣagam) - moving in the sky; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; द्विजातयः (dvijātayaḥ) - the twice-born; देवान् (devān) - to the gods; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; छेत्स्यति (chetsyati) - will cut; संशयम् (saṃśayam) - doubt;]
(Him having seen suddenly approaching, the Vasu, they you moving in the sky, said the twice-born to the gods: "This will cut doubt." (3-324-7))
Seeing him, the Vasu, suddenly approaching, the twice-born said to the gods about you, who move in the sky: "This one will dispel doubt." (3-324-7)
यज्वा दानपतिः श्रेष्ठः सर्वभूतहितप्रियः। कथं स्विदन्यथा ब्रूयाद्वाक्यमेष महान्वसुः ॥३-३२४-८॥
yajvā dānapatiḥ śreṣṭhaḥ sarvabhūtahitapriyaḥ। kathaṃ svid anyathā brūyād vākyam eṣa mahān vasuḥ ॥3-324-8॥
[यज्वा (yajvā) - sacrificer; दानपतिः (dānapatiḥ) - lord of gifts; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - excellent; सर्वभूतहितप्रियः (sarvabhūtahitapriyaḥ) - one who is fond of the welfare of all beings; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; स्वित् (svid) - indeed; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - would say; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - word; एष (eṣa) - this; महान् (mahān) - great; वसुः (vasuḥ) - Vasu (a class of deities);]
(The sacrificer, lord of gifts, excellent, one who is fond of the welfare of all beings—how indeed otherwise would this great Vasu say a word?)
How could this great Vasu, who is a sacrificer, lord of gifts, excellent, and fond of the welfare of all beings, ever speak otherwise? (3-324-8)
एवं ते संविदं कृत्वा विबुधा ऋषयस्तथा। अपृच्छन्सहसाभ्येत्य वसुं राजानमन्तिकात् ॥३-३२४-९॥
evaṃ te saṃvidaṃ kṛtvā vibudhā ṛṣayas tathā। apṛcchansahasābhyetya vasuṃ rājānam antikāt ॥3-324-9॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; in this way; ते (te) - they; संविदं (saṃvidam) - agreement; understanding; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; having done; विबुधाः (vibudhāḥ) - the wise; the gods; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; likewise; अपृच्छन् (apṛcchan) - asked; inquired; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; at once; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - having approached; coming near; वसुं (vasum) - Vasu; (name of the king); राजानम् (rājānam) - king; अन्तिकात् (antikāt) - from proximity; from near;]
(Thus they, having made an agreement, the wise (gods) and sages likewise, asked, having suddenly approached, Vasu the king from near.)
In this way, after coming to an agreement, the gods and sages together quickly approached King Vasu and questioned him directly. (3-324-9)
भो राजन्केन यष्टव्यमजेनाहो स्विदौषधैः। एतन्नः संशयं छिन्धि प्रमाणं नो भवान्मतः ॥३-३२४-१०॥
bho rājan kena yaṣṭavyam ajena aho svid auṣadhaiḥ। etan naḥ saṁśayam chindhi pramāṇaṁ no bhavān mataḥ ॥3-324-10॥

(O king, by what should sacrifice be performed, by a goat or perhaps by herbs? This our doubt cut, you are regarded as our authority.)
O king, by what should the sacrifice be performed—by a goat or perhaps by herbs? Please resolve this doubt of ours, for you are considered our authority. (3-324-10)
स तान्कृताञ्जलिर्भूत्वा परिपप्रच्छ वै वसुः। कस्य वः को मतः पक्षो ब्रूत सत्यं समागताः ॥३-३२४-११॥
sa tān kṛtāñjalir bhūtvā paripapraccha vai vasuḥ। kasya vaḥ ko mataḥ pakṣaḥ brūta satyaṃ samāgatāḥ ॥3-324-11॥
[स (sa) - he; तान् (tān) - them; कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - having joined palms; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; परिपप्रच्छ (paripapraccha) - asked thoroughly; वै (vai) - indeed; वसुः (vasuḥ) - Vasu; कस्य (kasya) - whose; वः (vaḥ) - your; कः (kaḥ) - which; मतः (mataḥ) - considered; पक्षः (pakṣaḥ) - side; ब्रूत (brūta) - speak; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - assembled;]
(He, having joined palms, having become, asked thoroughly indeed Vasu: Whose among you, which considered side, speak truth, assembled.)
He, Vasu, having joined his palms, respectfully asked them: "Among you, whose side is considered? Speak the truth, you who have assembled." (3-324-11)
ऋषय ऊचुः॥

The sages said.
धान्यैर्यष्टव्यमित्येष पक्षोऽस्माकं नराधिप। देवानां तु पशुः पक्षो मतो राजन्वदस्व नः ॥३-३२४-१२॥
dhānyair yaṣṭavyam iti eṣaḥ pakṣaḥ asmākam narādhipa। devānām tu paśuḥ pakṣaḥ mataḥ rājan vadasva naḥ ॥3-324-12॥
[धान्यैः (dhānyaiḥ) - with grains; यष्टव्यम् (yaṣṭavyam) - should be sacrificed; इति (iti) - thus; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; पक्षः (pakṣaḥ) - side; अस्माकं (asmākam) - our; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; तु (tu) - but; पशुः (paśuḥ) - animal; पक्षः (pakṣaḥ) - side; मतः (mataḥ) - is considered; राजन् (rājan) - O king; वदस्व (vadasva) - please tell; नः (naḥ) - to us;]
(With grains should be sacrificed thus this side our O king. Of the gods but animal side is considered O king, please tell to us. (3-324-12))
O king, our view is that sacrifices should be performed with grains; but for the gods, the view is that animals are to be used. O king, please tell us your opinion. (3-324-12)

देवानां तु मतं ज्ञात्वा वसुना पक्षसंश्रयात्। छागेनाजेन यष्टव्यमेवमुक्तं वचस्तदा ॥३-३२४-१३॥
devānāṃ tu mataṃ jñātvā vasunā pakṣasaṃśrayāt। chāgenājena yaṣṭavyamevamuktaṃ vacastadā ॥3-324-13॥
[देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; तु (tu) - but; मतम् (matam) - opinion; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; वसुना (vasunā) - by Vasu; पक्षसंश्रयात् (pakṣasaṃśrayāt) - from taking the side; छागेन (chāgena) - by a goat; अजेन (ajena) - by a ram; यष्टव्यम् (yaṣṭavyam) - should be sacrificed; एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तम् (uktam) - said; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Having known the opinion of the gods, by Vasu, from taking the side, by a goat, by a ram, should be sacrificed, thus said, speech, then.)
Then, having known the opinion of the gods, Vasu, taking sides, said these words: "A goat or a ram should be sacrificed thus." (3-324-13)
कुपितास्ते ततः सर्वे मुनयः सूर्यवर्चसः। ऊचुर्वसुं विमानस्थं देवपक्षार्थवादिनम् ॥३-३२४-१४॥
kupitās te tataḥ sarve munayaḥ sūryavarcasaḥ। ūcur vasuṃ vimānasthaṃ devapakṣārthavādinam ॥3-324-14॥
[कुपिताः (kupitāḥ) - angered; ते (te) - they; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - sages; सूर्यवर्चसः (sūryavarcasaḥ) - having the brilliance of the sun; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; वसुम् (vasum) - Vasu; विमानस्थम् (vimānastham) - situated in the aerial car; देवपक्षार्थवादिनम् (devapakṣārthavādinam) - one speaking for the cause of the gods;]
(Angered, they then all the sages of sun-like brilliance said to Vasu, situated in the aerial car, who was speaking for the cause of the gods.)
Then, all the sages, angered and radiant like the sun, spoke to Vasu, who was in the aerial car and advocating for the gods. (3-324-14)
सुरपक्षो गृहीतस्ते यस्मात्तस्माद्दिवः पत। अद्य प्रभृति ते राजन्नाकाशे विहता गतिः ॥ अस्मच्छापाभिघातेन महीं भित्त्वा प्रवेक्ष्यसि ॥३-३२४-१५॥
surapakṣo gṛhītaste yasmāttasmādivaḥ pata। adya prabhṛti te rājannākāśe vihatā gatiḥ ॥ asmacchāpābhighātena mahīṃ bhittvā pravekṣyasi ॥3-324-15॥
[सुरपक्षः (surapakṣaḥ) - deva-side; (the side of the gods); गृहीतः (gṛhītaḥ) - seized; ते (te) - by you; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; दिवः (divaḥ) - from heaven; पत (pata) - fall; अद्य (adya) - today; प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - from now on; ते (te) - your; राजन् (rājan) - O king; आकाशे (ākāśe) - in the sky; विहता (vihatā) - obstructed; गतिः (gatiḥ) - movement; अस्मत् (asmat) - our; शाप (śāpa) - curse; अभिघातेन (abhighātena) - by the blow; महीं (mahīṃ) - the earth; भित्त्वा (bhittvā) - having pierced; प्रवेक्ष्यसि (pravekṣyasi) - you will enter;]
(Because the deva-side has been seized by you, therefore fall from heaven. From today on, O king, your movement in the sky is obstructed. By the blow of our curse, having pierced the earth, you will enter.)
Since you have seized the side of the gods, therefore fall from heaven. From this day onward, O king, your movement in the sky is obstructed. By the force of our curse, you will pierce the earth and enter it. (3-324-15)
ततस्तस्मिन्मुहूर्तेऽथ राजोपरिचरस्तदा। अधो वै सम्बभूवाशु भूमेर्विवरगो नृपः ॥ स्मृतिस्त्वेनं न प्रजहौ तदा नारायणाज्ञया ॥३-३२४-१६॥
tatastasmin muhūrte'tha rājo-paricaraḥ tadā। adho vai sambabhūvāśu bhūmer vivarago nṛpaḥ॥ smṛtis tvenam na prajahau tadā nārāyaṇājñayā॥3-324-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; मुहूर्ते (muhūrte) - moment; अथ (atha) - then; राजोपरिचरः (rājo-paricaraḥ) - Rājoparicara (the king); तदा (tadā) - at that time; अधः (adhaḥ) - down; वै (vai) - indeed; सम्बभूव (sambabhūva) - became; आशु (āśu) - quickly; भूमेः (bhūmeḥ) - of the earth; विवरगः (vivaragaḥ) - one who goes into a hole; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; स्मृतिः (smṛtiḥ) - memory; तु (tu) - but; एनम् (enam) - him; न (na) - not; प्रजहौ (prajahau) - abandoned; तदा (tadā) - at that time; नारायणाज्ञया (nārāyaṇājñayā) - by the command of Nārāyaṇa;]
(Then in that moment, then Rājoparicara at that time. Down indeed became quickly of the earth, one who goes into a hole, the king. Memory but him not abandoned at that time by the command of Nārāyaṇa. (3-324-16))
Then, at that very moment, King Rājoparicara quickly went down into a hole in the earth. Yet, by the command of Nārāyaṇa, his memory did not abandon him at that time. (3-324-16)
देवास्तु सहिताः सर्वे वसोः शापविमोक्षणम्। चिन्तयामासुरव्यग्राः सुकृतं हि नृपस्य तत् ॥३-३२४-१७॥
devāstu sahitāḥ sarve vasoḥ śāpavimokṣaṇam। cintayāmāsuravyagrāḥ sukṛtaṃ hi nṛpasya tat ॥3-324-17॥
[देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; तु (tu) - but; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वसोः (vasoḥ) - of Vasu; शापविमोक्षणम् (śāpavimokṣaṇam) - curse-release; चिन्तयामासुः (cintayāmāsuḥ) - they considered; अव्यग्राः (avyagrāḥ) - unagitated; सुकृतम् (sukṛtam) - good deed; हि (hi) - indeed; नृपस्य (nṛpasya) - of the king; तत् (tat) - that;]
(The gods but together all of Vasu curse-release they considered unagitated; good deed indeed of the king that.)
But all the gods together calmly considered the release from Vasu's curse; indeed, that was the king's good deed. (3-324-17)
अनेनास्मत्कृते राज्ञा शापः प्राप्तो महात्मना। अस्य प्रतिप्रियं कार्यं सहितैर्नो दिवौकसः ॥३-३२४-१८॥
anenāsmatkṛte rājñā śāpaḥ prāpto mahātmanā। asya pratipriyaṃ kāryaṃ sahitairno divaukasaḥ ॥3-324-18॥
[अनेन (anena) - by this; अस्मत्कृते (asmat-kṛte) - for our sake; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; शापः (śāpaḥ) - curse; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - has been obtained; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one; अस्य (asya) - his; प्रतिप्रियं (pratipriyaṃ) - what is pleasing in return; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - should be done; सहितैः (sahitaiḥ) - together with; नः (naḥ) - by us; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the dwellers of heaven;]
(By this, for our sake, by the king, a curse has been obtained by the great-souled one. For him, what is pleasing in return should be done together by us, the dwellers of heaven.)
By this act, for our sake, the king has received a curse from the great-souled one. In return, we, the dwellers of heaven, should together do what is pleasing to him. (3-324-18)
इति बुद्ध्या व्यवस्याशु गत्वा निश्चयमीश्वराः। ऊचुस्तं हृष्टमनसो राजोपरिचरं तदा ॥३-३२४-१९॥
iti buddhyā vyavasyāśu gatvā niścayam īśvarāḥ। ūcus taṃ hṛṣṭamanasaḥ rājoparicaraṃ tadā ॥3-324-19॥

(Thus, by intellect, having determined quickly, having gone, decision, the lords said to him, with delighted minds, Rājoparicara, then.)
Thus, having quickly made up their minds with intellect and gone there, the lords then said to Rājoparicara with delighted hearts. (3-324-19)
ब्रह्मण्यदेवं त्वं भक्तः सुरासुरगुरुं हरिम्। कामं स तव तुष्टात्मा कुर्याच्छापविमोक्षणम् ॥३-३२४-२०॥
brahmaṇyadevaṃ tvaṃ bhaktaḥ surāsuraguruṃ harim। kāmaṃ sa tava tuṣṭātmā kuryācchāpavimokṣaṇam ॥3-324-20॥
[ब्रह्मण्यदेवं (brahmaṇyadevam) - god devoted to Brahman; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; भक्तः (bhaktaḥ) - devotee; सुरासुरगुरुं (surāsuragurum) - teacher of gods and demons; हरिम् (harim) - Hari (Viṣṇu); कामं (kāmaṃ) - willingly; स (sa) - he; तव (tava) - your; तुष्टात्मा (tuṣṭātmā) - one whose mind is pleased; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - may do; शापविमोक्षणम् (śāpavimokṣaṇam) - removal of curse;]
(God devoted to Brahman, you, devotee, teacher of gods and demons, Hari; willingly, he, your, pleased in mind, may do, removal of curse.)
You are a devotee of the god devoted to Brahman, Hari, the teacher of gods and demons; if he is pleased with you, he may willingly remove the curse. (3-324-20)
मानना तु द्विजातीनां कर्तव्या वै महात्मनाम्। अवश्यं तपसा तेषां फलितव्यं नृपोत्तम ॥३-३२४-२१॥
mānanā tu dvijātīnām kartavyā vai mahātmanām। avaśyaṃ tapasā teṣāṃ phalitavyaṃ nṛpottama ॥3-324-21॥
[मानना (mānanā) - honouring; तु (tu) - but; द्विजातीनां (dvijātīnām) - of the twice-born; कर्तव्या (kartavyā) - to be done; वै (vai) - indeed; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great-souled; अवश्यं (avaśyaṃ) - certainly; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; फलितव्यं (phalitavyaṃ) - must bear fruit; नृपोत्तम (nṛpottama) - O best of kings;]
(Honouring but of the twice-born to be done indeed of the great-souled. Certainly by austerity of them must bear fruit, O best of kings.)

यतस्त्वं सहसा भ्रष्ट आकाशान्मेदिनीतलम्। एकं त्वनुग्रहं तुभ्यं दद्मो वै नृपसत्तम ॥३-३२४-२२॥
yatastvaṁ sahasā bhraṣṭa ākāśānmedinītalam। ekaṁ tvanugrahaṁ tubhyaṁ dadmo vai nṛpasattama ॥3-324-22॥
[यतः (yataḥ) - because; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; भ्रष्ट (bhraṣṭa) - fallen; आकाशात् (ākāśāt) - from the sky; मेदिनी-तलम् (medinī-talam) - earth-surface; एकम् (ekam) - one; त्व्-अनुग्रहम् (tv-anugraham) - to you-favor; तुभ्यम् (tubhyam) - to you; दद्मः (dadmaḥ) - we give; वै (vai) - indeed; नृप-सत्तम (nṛpa-sattama) - O best of kings;]
(Because you suddenly fallen from the sky to the earth-surface, one favor to you we give indeed, O best of kings.)
Because you have suddenly fallen from the sky to the earth, we indeed grant you one favor, O best of kings. (3-324-22)
यावत्त्वं शापदोषेण कालमासिष्यसेऽनघ। भूमेर्विवरगो भूत्वा तावन्तं कालमाप्स्यसि ॥ यज्ञेषु सुहुतां विप्रैर्वसोर्धारां महात्मभिः ॥३-३२४-२३॥
yāvat tvaṃ śāpadoṣeṇa kālam āsiṣyase 'nagha। bhūmer vivarago bhūtvā tāvantaṃ kālam āpsyasi ॥ yajñeṣu suhutāṃ vipraiḥ vasor dhārāṃ mahātmabhiḥ ॥3-324-23॥
[यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; शापदोषेण (śāpadoṣeṇa) - by the fault of a curse; कालम् (kālam) - time; आसिष्यसे (āsiṣyase) - will remain; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; भूमेः (bhūmeḥ) - of the earth; विवरगः (vivaragaḥ) - gone to a cavity; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; तावन्तम् (tāvantam) - that much; कालम् (kālam) - time; आप्स्यसि (āpsyasi) - you will obtain; यज्ञेषु (yajñeṣu) - in sacrifices; सुहुताम् (suhutām) - well-offered; विप्रैः (vipraiḥ) - by the Brahmins; वसोः (vasoḥ) - of ghee; धाराम् (dhārām) - stream; महात्मभिः (mahātmabhiḥ) - by the great-souled ones;]
(As long as you, O sinless one, will remain for a time by the fault of a curse, having become one gone to a cavity of the earth, you will obtain that much time. In sacrifices, by the Brahmins, the stream of ghee well-offered by the great-souled ones.)
O sinless one, as long as you must remain, due to the fault of a curse, within a cavity of the earth, you will experience that period. During that time, in sacrifices, you will receive the stream of ghee well-offered by the great-souled Brahmins. (3-324-23)
प्राप्स्यसेऽस्मदनुध्यानान्मा च त्वां ग्लानिरास्पृशेत्। न क्षुत्पिपासे राजेन्द्र भूमेश्छिद्रे भविष्यतः ॥३-३२४-२४॥
prāpsyase'smad-anudhyānān mā ca tvāṃ glānir āspṛśet। na kṣutpipāse rājendra bhūmeś chindre bhaviṣyataḥ ॥3-324-24॥
[प्राप्स्यसे (prāpsyase) - you will obtain; अस्मत् (asmat) - our; अनुध्यानात् (anudhyānāt) - from contemplation; मा (mā) - not; च (ca) - and; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; ग्लानिः (glāniḥ) - fatigue; आस्पृशेत् (āspṛśet) - may touch; न (na) - not; क्षुत्पिपासे (kṣutpipāse) - hunger and thirst; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; भूमेः (bhūmeḥ) - of the earth; छिद्रे (chindre) - in the cavity; भविष्यतः (bhaviṣyataḥ) - you will be;]
(You will obtain from our contemplation; and let not fatigue touch you. O king, you will not have hunger and thirst in the cavity of the earth.)
Through our contemplation, you will attain your goal; and let not fatigue affect you. O king, in the cavity of the earth, you will not experience hunger or thirst. (3-324-24)
वसोर्धारानुपीतत्वात्तेजसाप्यायितेन च। स देवोऽस्मद्वरात्प्रीतो ब्रह्मलोकं हि नेष्यति ॥३-३२४-२५॥
vasordhārānupītatvāt tejasāpyāyitena ca। sa devo'smad-varāt prīto brahmalokaṃ hi neṣyati ॥3-324-25॥
[वसोः (vasoḥ) - of the essence; (of) vital energy; धारानुपीतत्वात् (dhārānupītatvāt) - because of having drunk the stream; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; अप्यायितेन (apyāyitena) - nourished; च (ca) - and; स (sa) - he; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; अस्मद्-वरात् (asmad-varāt) - by our boon; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; ब्रह्मलोकं (brahmalokam) - Brahma-world; हि (hi) - indeed; नेष्यति (neṣyati) - will lead;]
(Because of having drunk the stream of the essence and nourished by brilliance, that god, pleased by our boon, indeed will lead (him) to the Brahma-world.)
Because he has drunk the stream of vital essence and has been nourished by brilliance, that god, pleased by our boon, will indeed lead him to the world of Brahma. (3-324-25)
एवं दत्त्वा वरं राज्ञे सर्वे तत्र दिवौकसः। गताः स्वभवनं देवा ऋषयश्च तपोधनाः ॥३-३२४-२६॥
evaṃ dattvā varaṃ rājñe sarve tatra divaukasāḥ। gatāḥ svabhavanaṃ devā ṛṣayaś ca tapodhanāḥ ॥3-324-26॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; in this way; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; वरं (varaṃ) - boon; राज्ञे (rājñe) - to the king; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तत्र (tatra) - there; दिवौकसः (divaukasāḥ) - the dwellers of heaven; gods; गताः (gatāḥ) - went; स्वभवनं (svabhavanaṃ) - own abode; देवा (devā) - gods; ऋषयश्च (ṛṣayaś ca) - and sages; तपोधनाः (tapodhanāḥ) - ascetics; those rich in austerity;]
(Thus, having given the boon to the king, all the dwellers of heaven there, the gods, and the sages and ascetics, went to their own abodes.)
Having thus granted the boon to the king, all the gods, the sages, and the ascetics present there returned to their own abodes. (3-324-26)
चक्रे च सततं पूजां विष्वक्सेनाय भारत। जप्यं जगौ च सततं नारायणमुखोद्गतम् ॥३-३२४-२७॥
cakre ca satataṃ pūjāṃ viṣvaksenāya bhārata। japyaṃ jagau ca satataṃ nārāyaṇamukhodgatam ॥3-324-27॥
[चक्रे (cakre) - he performed; he did; च (ca) - and; सततम् (satatam) - always; continually; पूजाम् (pūjām) - worship; विष्वक्सेनाय (viṣvaksenāya) - to Viṣvaksena; (epithet of Viṣṇu); भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; (descendant of Bharata); जप्यम् (japyam) - recitation; muttering; जगौ (jagau) - he sang; he chanted; च (ca) - and; सततम् (satatam) - always; continually; नारायणमुखोद्गतम् (nārāyaṇamukhodgatam) - arisen from the mouth of Nārāyaṇa;]
(He performed and always worship to Viṣvaksena, O Bhārata. The recitation arisen from the mouth of Nārāyaṇa he sang and always.)
O Bhārata, he always performed worship to Viṣvaksena, and he always chanted the recitation that arose from the mouth of Nārāyaṇa. (3-324-27)
तत्रापि पञ्चभिर्यज्ञैः पञ्चकालानरिंदम। अयजद्धरिं सुरपतिं भूमेर्विवरगोऽपि सन् ॥३-३२४-२८॥
tatrāpi pañcabhiryajñaiḥ pañcakālānariṃdama। ayajaddhariṃ surapatiṃ bhūmervivarago'pi san ॥3-324-28॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अपि (api) - also; पञ्चभिः (pañcabhiḥ) - with five; यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - sacrifices; पञ्चकालान् (pañcakālān) - the five times; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of enemies; अयजत् (ayajat) - he worshipped; हरिं (hariṃ) - Hari; सुरपतिं (surapatiṃ) - the lord of the gods; भूमेः (bhūmeḥ) - from the earth; विवरगः (vivaragaḥ) - one who had gone out; अपि (api) - even; सन् (san) - being;]
(There also, with five sacrifices at the five times, O subduer of enemies, he worshipped Hari, the lord of the gods, being one who had gone out from the earth, even being so.)
There too, O subduer of enemies, even after departing from the earth, he worshipped Hari, the lord of the gods, with five sacrifices at the five times. (3-324-28)
ततोऽस्य तुष्टो भगवान्भक्त्या नारायणो हरिः। अनन्यभक्तस्य सतस्तत्परस्य जितात्मनः ॥३-३२४-२९॥
tato'sya tuṣṭo bhagavānbhaktyā nārāyaṇo hariḥ। ananyabhaktasya satastatparasya jitātmanaḥ ॥3-324-29॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; अस्य (asya) - of him; his; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - pleased; satisfied; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; the blessed one; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - by devotion; through devotion; नारायणः (nārāyaṇaḥ) - Nārāyaṇa; the Supreme Being; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; Viṣṇu; अनन्यभक्तस्य (ananyabhaktasya) - of one with undivided devotion; of the exclusive devotee; सतः (sataḥ) - of the true; of the good; तत्परस्य (tatparasya) - of one intent on that; of one devoted to that; जितात्मनः (jitātmanaḥ) - of one who has conquered the self; of the self-controlled;]
(Then, of him, pleased, the Lord, by devotion, Nārāyaṇa, Hari. Of the one with undivided devotion, of the true, of the one intent on that, of the self-controlled. (3-324-29))
Then, Nārāyaṇa Hari, the Lord, being pleased by his devotion, favored the one who had undivided devotion, was true, intent on Him, and self-controlled. (3-324-29)
वरदो भगवान्विष्णुः समीपस्थं द्विजोत्तमम्। गरुत्मन्तं महावेगमाबभाषे स्मयन्निव ॥३-३२४-३०॥
varado bhagavān viṣṇuḥ samīpasthaṃ dvijottamam। garutmantaṃ mahāvegam ābabhāṣe smayann iva ॥3-324-30॥
[वरदः (varadaḥ) - bestower of boons; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the illustrious one; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; समीपस्थं (samīpastham) - standing nearby; द्विजोत्तमम् (dvijottamam) - the best among twice-born (brāhmaṇas); गरुत्मन्तम् (garutmantam) - Garutmān (Garuḍa); महावेगम् (mahāvegam) - of great speed; आबभाषे (ābabhāṣe) - addressed; स्मयन् (smayan) - smiling; इव (iva) - as if;]
(The bestower of boons, the illustrious Viṣṇu, standing nearby the best among twice-born, addressed Garutmān of great speed, as if smiling.)
The boon-giving Lord Viṣṇu, standing near the foremost of the twice-born, addressed Garuḍa, the swift one, with a smile. (3-324-30)
द्विजोत्तम महाभाग गम्यतां वचनान्मम। सम्राड्राजा वसुर्नाम धर्मात्मा मां समाश्रितः ॥३-३२४-३१॥
dvijottama mahābhāga gamyatāṃ vacanān mama। samrāḍrājā vasur nāma dharmātmā māṃ samāśritaḥ ॥3-324-31॥
[द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - best among twice-born; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - greatly fortunate; गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - let (it) be gone; वचनात् (vacanāt) - from the word; मम (mama) - of me; सम्राड्राजा (samrāḍrājā) - emperor king; वसुः (vasuḥ) - Vasu; नाम (nāma) - by name; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; माम् (mām) - me; समाश्रितः (samāśritaḥ) - has taken refuge;]
(O best among twice-born, greatly fortunate, let it be gone from my word. The emperor king named Vasu, righteous-souled, has taken refuge in me.)
O most excellent of the twice-born, O greatly fortunate one, let it be done as I have said. The emperor named Vasu, who is righteous, has sought my protection. (3-324-31)
ब्राह्मणानां प्रकोपेन प्रविष्टो वसुधातलम्। मानितास्ते तु विप्रेन्द्रास्त्वं तु गच्छ द्विजोत्तम ॥३-३२४-३२॥
brāhmaṇānāṃ prakopena praviṣṭo vasudhātalam। mānitās te tu viprendrās tvaṃ tu gaccha dvijottama ॥3-324-32॥
[ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; प्रकोपेन (prakopena) - by the anger; प्रविष्टः (praviṣṭaḥ) - entered; वसुधातलम् (vasudhātalam) - the surface of the earth; मानिताः (mānitāḥ) - honored; ते (te) - by you; तु (tu) - but; विप्रेन्द्राः (viprendrāḥ) - the best of Brāhmaṇas; त्वम् (tvam) - you; तु (tu) - but; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of twice-born;]
(By the anger of the Brāhmaṇas, the surface of the earth was entered. The best of Brāhmaṇas have been honored by you, but you, O best of twice-born, go.)
Because of the Brāhmaṇas' anger, the earth's surface was penetrated. The foremost Brāhmaṇas have been honored by you; but now, O best of twice-born, you should go. (3-324-32)
भूमेर्विवरसङ्गुप्तं गरुडेह ममाज्ञया। अधश्चरं नृपश्रेष्ठं खेचरं कुरु माचिरम् ॥३-३२४-३३॥
bhūmer-vivarasaṅguptaṃ garuḍeha mamājñayā। adhaś-caraṃ nṛpaśreṣṭhaṃ khecaraṃ kuru māciram ॥3-324-33॥
[भूमेः (bhūmeḥ) - of the earth; विवर-सङ्गुप्तं (vivara-saṅguptaṃ) - hidden in a cavity; गरुडे (garuḍe) - O Garuḍa; इह (iha) - here; मम (mama) - by my; आज्ञया (ājñayā) - command; अधः-चरं (adhaḥ-caraṃ) - moving below; नृप-श्रेष्ठं (nṛpa-śreṣṭhaṃ) - best of kings; खे-चरं (khe-caraṃ) - moving in the sky; कुरु (kuru) - make; मा (mā) - not; अचिरम् (aciram) - delay;]
(Of the earth hidden in a cavity, O Garuḍa, here by my command, the best of kings moving below, make him moving in the sky; do not delay.)
O Garuḍa, by my command, make the best of kings, who is hidden in a cavity of the earth and moves below, into one who moves in the sky here; do not delay. (3-324-33)
गरुत्मानथ विक्षिप्य पक्षौ मारुतवेगवान्। विवेश विवरं भूमेर्यत्रास्ते वाग्यतो वसुः ॥३-३२४-३४॥
garutmān atha vikṣipya pakṣau mārutavegavān। viveśa vivaraṃ bhūmer yatrāste vāgyato vasuḥ॥3-324-34॥
[गरुत्मान् (garutmān) - having wings; अथ (atha) - then; विक्षिप्य (vikṣipya) - having spread; पक्षौ (pakṣau) - the two wings; मारुतवेगवान् (mārutavegavān) - possessing the speed of the wind; विवेश (viveśa) - entered; विवरम् (vivaram) - opening; भूमेः (bhūmeḥ) - of the earth; यत्र (yatra) - where; आस्ते (āste) - remains; वाग्यतः (vāgyataḥ) - silent; वसुः (vasuḥ) - Vasu (Kubera);]
(Having wings, then, having spread the two wings, possessing the speed of the wind, entered the opening of the earth, where Vasu (Kubera) remains silent.)
Then Garutmān, spreading his two wings and swift as the wind, entered the opening in the earth where Vasu (Kubera) sits in silence. (3-324-34)
तत एनं समुत्क्षिप्य सहसा विनतासुतः। उत्पपात नभस्तूर्णं तत्र चैनममुञ्चत ॥३-३२४-३५॥
tata enaṃ samutkṣipya sahasā vinatāsutaḥ। utpapāta nabhastūrṇaṃ tatra cainamamuñcata ॥3-324-35॥
[तत (tata) - then; एनम् (enam) - him; समुत्क्षिप्य (samutkṣipya) - having lifted up; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; विनतासुतः (vinatāsutaḥ) - son of Vinatā; उत्पपात (utpapāta) - flew up; नभस्तूर्णम् (nabhastūrṇam) - quickly into the sky; तत्र (tatra) - there; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; अमुञ्चत् (amuñcat) - released;]
(Then, having lifted him up suddenly, the son of Vinatā flew up quickly into the sky, and there released him.)
Then, the son of Vinatā suddenly lifted him up, swiftly soared into the sky, and there released him. (3-324-35)
तस्मिन्मुहूर्ते सञ्जज्ञे राजोपरिचरः पुनः। सशरीरो गतश्चैव ब्रह्मलोकं नृपोत्तमः ॥३-३२४-३६॥
tasmin muhūrte sañjajñe rājoparicaraḥ punaḥ। saśarīro gataścaiva brahmalokaṃ nṛpottamaḥ ॥3-324-36॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; मुहूर्ते (muhūrte) - moment; सञ्जज्ञे (sañjajñe) - was born again; राजोपरिचरः (rājoparicaraḥ) - Rājoparicara (the king); पुनः (punaḥ) - again; सशरीरः (saśarīraḥ) - with body; गतः (gataḥ) - went; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ब्रह्मलोकम् (brahmalokam) - Brahma-loka; नृपोत्तमः (nṛpottamaḥ) - the best of kings;]
(In that moment was born again Rājoparicara again; with body went and indeed to Brahma-loka the best of kings.)
At that very moment, Rājoparicara, the best of kings, was reborn; with his body, he went to Brahma-loka. (3-324-36)
एवं तेनापि कौन्तेय वाग्दोषाद्देवताज्ञया। प्राप्ता गतिरयज्वार्हा द्विजशापान्महात्मना ॥३-३२४-३७॥
evaṃ tenāpi kaunteya vāgdoṣād devatājñayā। prāptā gatir ayajvārhā dvijaśāpān mahātmanā ॥3-324-37॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; तेनापि (tenāpi) - by him also; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; वाग्दोषात् (vāgdoṣāt) - from fault of speech; देवताज्ञया (devatājñayā) - by command of the deity; प्राप्ता (prāptā) - attained; गतिः (gatiḥ) - state; अयज्वार्हा (ayajvārhā) - unworthy of the sacrificer; द्विजशापात् (dvijaśāpāt) - from the curse of the twice-born; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one;]
(Thus, by him also, O son of Kunti, from fault of speech, by command of the deity, was attained the state unworthy of the sacrificer, from the curse of the twice-born, by the great-souled one.)
Thus, O son of Kunti, by him also, due to a fault of speech and by the command of the deity, the state unworthy of a sacrificer was attained as a result of the curse of the twice-born, by the great-souled one. (3-324-37)
केवलं पुरुषस्तेन सेवितो हरिरीश्वरः। ततः शीघ्रं जहौ शापं ब्रह्मलोकमवाप च ॥३-३२४-३८॥
kevalaṃ puruṣas tena sevito harir īśvaraḥ। tataḥ śīghraṃ jahau śāpaṃ brahmalokam avāpa ca ॥3-324-38॥
[केवलं (kevalaṃ) - only; exclusively; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; person; soul; तेन (tena) - by him; सेवितः (sevitaḥ) - served; attended; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; Viṣṇu; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - Lord; master; ततः (tataḥ) - then; thereafter; शीघ्रं (śīghraṃ) - quickly; soon; जहौ (jahau) - abandoned; gave up; शापं (śāpaṃ) - curse; ब्रह्मलोकम् (brahmalokam) - Brahma-loka; the world of Brahma; अवाप (avāpa) - attained; reached; च (ca) - and;]
(Only the man by him served Hari, the Lord. Then quickly he abandoned the curse and attained Brahma-loka and.)
Hari, the Lord, was served exclusively by that man. Then, he quickly gave up the curse and attained Brahma-loka. (3-324-38)
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं ते भूता मानवा यथा। नारदोऽपि यथा श्वेतं द्वीपं स गतवानृषिः ॥ तत्ते सर्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि शृणुष्वैकमना नृप ॥३-३२४-३९॥
etatte sarvam ākhyātaṃ te bhūtā mānavā yathā। nārado'pi yathā śvetaṃ dvīpaṃ sa gatavān ṛṣiḥ ॥ tatte sarvaṃ pravakṣyāmi śṛṇuṣvaikamānā nṛpa ॥3-324-39॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - declared; ते (te) - to you; भूताः (bhūtāḥ) - beings; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - humans; यथा (yathā) - as; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; अपि (api) - also; यथा (yathā) - as; श्वेतम् (śvetam) - white; द्वीपम् (dvīpam) - island; सः (saḥ) - he; गतवान् (gatavān) - went; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; तत् (tat) - that; ते (te) - to you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; प्रवक्ष्यामि (pravakṣyāmi) - I shall declare; शृणुष्व (śṛṇuṣva) - listen; एकमना (ekamanā) - with one mind; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(This to you all declared to you beings humans as. Nārada also as white island he went sage. That to you all I shall declare, listen with one mind, O king.)
All this has been declared to you, as it happened with beings and humans. Nārada also, as he went to the White Island, the sage. That I shall tell you in full; listen with one-pointed mind, O king. (3-324-39)
