kathaṁ sa bhagavān devo yajñeṣv agraharaḥ prabhuḥ। yajñadhārī ca satataṁ vedavedāṅgavittathā ॥3-327-1॥

How is that Lord, the god, the master who receives the foremost share in sacrifices, who always bears the sacrifice and is also the knower of the Veda and Vedāṅgas? (3-327-1)
निवृत्तं चास्थितो धर्मं क्षेमी भागवतप्रियः। प्रवृत्तिधर्मान्विदधे स एव भगवान्प्रभुः ॥३-३२७-२॥
nivṛttaṃ cāsthito dharmaṃ kṣemī bhāgavatapriyaḥ। pravṛttidharmānvidadhe sa eva bhagavānprabhuḥ ॥3-327-2॥

(Ceased and established in dharma, secure, dear to the devotees; he established the duties of engagement, he indeed the Lord, the master.)
Having withdrawn and established himself in righteousness, being secure and beloved of the devotees, he (the Lord and master) instituted the duties of engagement. (3-327-2)
कथं प्रवृत्तिधर्मेषु भागार्हा देवताः कृताः। कथं निवृत्तिधर्माश्च कृता व्यावृत्तबुद्धयः ॥३-३२७-३॥
kathaṁ pravṛttidharmeṣu bhāgārhā devatāḥ kṛtāḥ। kathaṁ nivṛttidharmāś ca kṛtā vyāvṛttabuddhayaḥ ॥3-327-3॥

एतं नः संशयं विप्र छिन्धि गुह्यं सनातनम्। त्वया नारायणकथा श्रुता वै धर्मसंहिता ॥३-३२७-४॥
etaṃ naḥ saṃśayaṃ vipra chindhi guhyaṃ sanātanam। tvayā nārāyaṇakathā śrutā vai dharmasaṃhitā ॥3-327-4॥

(This our doubt, O wise one, cut (it); the secret eternal. By you the story of Nārāyaṇa, indeed, the collection of dharma, has been heard.)
O wise one, dispel this doubt of ours—the eternal secret. You have indeed heard the story of Nārāyaṇa, the compendium of dharma. (3-327-4)
इमे सब्रह्मका लोकाः ससुरासुरमानवाः। क्रियास्वभ्युदयोक्तासु सक्ता दृश्यन्ति सर्वशः ॥ मोक्षश्चोक्तस्त्वया ब्रह्मन्निर्वाणं परमं सुखम् ॥३-३२७-५॥
ime sabrahmakā lokāḥ sasurāsuramānavāḥ। kriyāsvabhyudayoktāsu saktā dṛśyanti sarvaśaḥ ॥ mokṣaścoktastvayā brahmannirvāṇaṃ paramaṃ sukham ॥3-327-5॥

(These worlds with Brahmā, with gods, demons, and men, are seen everywhere attached to actions declared for prosperity. And liberation, O Brahman, is declared by you as extinction, the supreme happiness.)
These worlds, including Brahmā, gods, demons, and men, are seen everywhere attached to actions prescribed for prosperity. And, O Brahman, you have declared liberation as extinction, the highest happiness. (3-327-5)
ये च मुक्ता भवन्तीह पुण्यपापविवर्जिताः। ते सहस्रार्चिषं देवं प्रविशन्तीति शुश्रुमः ॥३-३२७-६॥
ye ca muktā bhavantīha puṇyapāpavivarjitāḥ। te sahasrārciṣaṃ devaṃ praviśantīti śuśrumaḥ ॥3-327-6॥
[ये (ye) - who; (plural); च (ca) - and; मुक्ताः (muktāḥ) - liberated; released; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; are; इह (iha) - here; in this world; पुण्यपापविवर्जिताः (puṇyapāpavivarjitāḥ) - devoid of merit and demerit; free from virtue and sin; ते (te) - they; सहस्रार्चिषम् (sahasrārciṣam) - having a thousand rays; of a thousand flames; देवम् (devam) - divine; god; प्रविशन्ति (praviśanti) - enter; इति (iti) - thus; so; शुश्रुमः (śuśrumaḥ) - we have heard;]
(Who and liberated become here devoid of merit and demerit; they the thousand-rayed divine enter thus we have heard.)
And those who here become liberated, free from virtue and sin, they enter the thousand-rayed divine—thus we have heard. (3-327-6)
अहो हि दुरनुष्ठेयो मोक्षधर्मः सनातनः। यं हित्वा देवताः सर्वा हव्यकव्यभुजोऽभवन् ॥३-३२७-७॥
aho hi duranuṣṭheyo mokṣadharmaḥ sanātanaḥ। yaṃ hitvā devatāḥ sarvā havyakavyabhujo'bhavan ॥3-327-7॥
[अहो (aho) - indeed; हि (hi) - for; surely; दुरनुष्ठेयो (duranuṣṭheyaḥ) - difficult-to-perform; मोक्षधर्मः (mokṣadharmaḥ) - the law of liberation; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; यं (yaṃ) - which; हित्वा (hitvā) - having abandoned; देवताः (devatāḥ) - the deities; सर्वा (sarvāḥ) - all; हव्यकव्यभुजः (havyakavyabhujaḥ) - eaters of oblations and ancestral offerings; अभवन् (abhavan) - became;]
(Indeed; for; difficult-to-perform; the law of liberation; eternal; which; having abandoned; the deities; all; eaters of oblations and ancestral offerings; became.)
Indeed, the eternal law of liberation is difficult to perform; having abandoned which, all the deities who are eaters of oblations and ancestral offerings came to be. (3-327-7)
किं नु ब्रह्मा च रुद्रश्च शक्रश्च बलभित्प्रभुः। सूर्यस्ताराधिपो वायुरग्निर्वरुण एव च ॥३-३२७-८॥
kiṁ nu brahmā ca rudraś ca śakraś ca balabhit-prabhuḥ। sūryas tārādhipo vāyur agnir varuṇa eva ca ॥3-327-8॥

What indeed are Brahmā, Rudra, Śakra, Indra the lord, Sūrya, the lord of stars (the Moon), Vāyu, Agni, and Varuṇa?
आकाशं जगती चैव ये च शेषा दिवौकसः ॥३-३२७-८॥
ākāśaṃ jagatī caiva ye ca śeṣā divaukasaḥ ॥3-327-8॥
[आकाशम् (ākāśam) - sky; जगती (jagatī) - earth; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; शेषाः (śeṣāḥ) - the rest; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - heaven-dwellers;]
(Sky, earth, and indeed those who are the rest of the heaven-dwellers.)
The sky, the earth, and all the remaining dwellers of heaven. (3-327-8)
प्रलयं न विजानन्ति आत्मनः परिनिर्मितम्। ततस्ते नास्थिता मार्गं ध्रुवमक्षयमव्ययम् ॥३-३२७-९॥
pralayaṃ na vijānanti ātmanaḥ parinirmitam। tataḥ te na asthitā mārgaṃ dhruvam akṣayam avyayam ॥3-327-9॥
[प्रलयम् (pralayam) - dissolution; destruction; न (na) - not; विजानन्ति (vijānanti) - they know; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself; परिनिर्मितम् (parinirmitam) - completely created; fashioned; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; ते (te) - they; न (na) - not; अस्थिता (asthitā) - established; abided; मार्गम् (mārgam) - path; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - firm; constant; अक्षयम् (akṣayam) - imperishable; अव्ययम् (avyayam) - unchanging;]
(They do not know the dissolution completely created by oneself; therefore, they have not abided in the path that is firm, imperishable, unchanging.)
They do not understand the destruction brought about by themselves; therefore, they have not established themselves in the path that is constant, imperishable, and unchanging. (3-327-9)
स्मृत्वा कालपरीमाणं प्रवृत्तिं ये समास्थिताः। दोषः कालपरीमाणे महानेष क्रियावताम् ॥३-३२७-१०॥
smṛtvā kālaparīmāṇaṃ pravṛttiṃ ye samāsthitāḥ। doṣaḥ kālaparīmāṇe mahāneṣa kriyāvatām ॥3-327-10॥
[स्मृत्वा (smṛtvā) - having remembered; कालपरीमाणम् (kālaparīmāṇam) - the measure of time; प्रवृत्तिम् (pravṛttim) - activity; ये (ye) - who; समास्थिताः (samāsthitāḥ) - have abided; दोषः (doṣaḥ) - fault; कालपरीमाणे (kālaparīmāṇe) - in the measure of time; महान् (mahān) - great; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; क्रियावताम् (kriyāvatām) - of those engaged in action;]
(Having remembered the measure of time, those who have abided in activity; fault in the measure of time, this is great for those engaged in action.)
Those who, having remembered the measure of time, have abided in activity; for those engaged in action, a fault in the measure of time is a great one. (3-327-10)
एतन्मे संशयं विप्र हृदि शल्यमिवार्पितम्। छिन्धीतिहासकथनात्परं कौतूहलं हि मे ॥३-३२७-११॥
etan me saṁśayaṁ vipra hṛdi śalyam ivārpitam। chindhīti itihāsa-kathanāt paraṁ kautūhalaṁ hi me ॥3-327-11॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; मे (me) - my; संशयम् (saṁśayam) - doubt; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; हृदि (hṛdi) - in (my) heart; शल्यम् (śalyam) - thorn; इव (iva) - like; अर्पितम् (arpitam) - placed; छिन्धि (chindhi) - remove; इति (iti) - thus; आसकथनात् (itihāsa-kathanāt) - by narration of history; परम् (param) - supreme; कौतूहलम् (kautūhalam) - curiosity; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - my;]
(This my doubt, O brāhmaṇa, is placed in (my) heart like a thorn; remove it thus by narration of history; supreme curiosity indeed is my.)
O brāhmaṇa, this doubt of mine is lodged in my heart like a thorn; please remove it by narrating the history, for I have the utmost curiosity. (3-327-11)
कथं भागहराः प्रोक्ता देवताः क्रतुषु द्विज। किमर्थं चाध्वरे ब्रह्मन्निज्यन्ते त्रिदिवौकसः ॥३-३२७-१२॥
kathaṁ bhāgaharāḥ proktā devatāḥ kratuṣu dvija। kimarthaṁ cādhvare brahman nijyante tridivaukasaḥ ॥3-327-12॥
[कथं (katham) - how; भागहराः (bhāgaharāḥ) - portion-takers; प्रोक्ता (proktā) - are called; देवताः (devatāḥ) - deities; क्रतुषु (kratuṣu) - in sacrifices; द्विज (dvija) - O twice-born; किमर्थं (kimartham) - for what reason; च (ca) - and; अध्वरे (adhvare) - in the sacrifice; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brāhmaṇa; इज्यन्ते (ijyante) - are worshipped; त्रिदिवौकसः (tridivaukasaḥ) - the dwellers of heaven;]

ये च भागं प्रगृह्णन्ति यज्ञेषु द्विजसत्तम। ते यजन्तो महायज्ञैः कस्य भागं ददन्ति वै ॥३-३२७-१३॥
ye ca bhāgaṃ pragṛhṇanti yajñeṣu dvijasattama। te yajanto mahāyajñaiḥ kasya bhāgaṃ dadanti vai ॥3-327-13॥

O best of the twice-born, those who accept a portion in sacrifices—when they perform great sacrifices, to whom do they indeed give a portion? (3-327-13)

अहो गूढतमः प्रश्नस्त्वया पृष्टो जनेश्वर। नातप्ततपसा ह्येष नावेदविदुषा तथा ॥ नापुराणविदा चापि शक्यो व्याहर्तुमञ्जसा ॥३-३२७-१४॥
aho gūḍhatamaḥ praśnas tvayā pṛṣṭo janeśvara। nātapta-tapasā hy eṣa nāveda-viduṣā tathā॥ nā-purāṇa-vidā cāpi śakyo vyāhartum añjasā॥3-327-14॥
[अहो (aho) - indeed; गूढतमः (gūḍhatamaḥ) - most secret; प्रश्नः (praśnaḥ) - question; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; पृष्टः (pṛṣṭaḥ) - asked; जनेश्वर (janeśvara) - O lord of people; न (na) - not; अतप्ततपसा (atapta-tapasā) - by one whose austerity is not heated; हि (hi) - indeed; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; न (na) - not; अवेदविदुषा (aveda-viduṣā) - by one who does not know the Veda; तथा (tathā) - thus; न (na) - not; पुराणविदा (purāṇa-vidā) - by one who knows not the Purāṇa; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; व्याहर्तुम् (vyāhartum) - to be spoken; अञ्जसा (añjasā) - easily;]
(Indeed, the most secret question has been asked by you, O lord of people. This is not (to be answered) by one whose austerity is not heated, nor by one who does not know the Veda thus. Nor is it possible to be spoken easily even by one who does not know the Purāṇa.)
Indeed, O lord of people, you have asked a most secret question. This cannot be answered by one who has not performed austerities, nor by one ignorant of the Veda, nor can it be easily explained even by one who does not know the Purāṇa. (3-327-14)
हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि यन्मे पृष्टः पुरा गुरुः। कृष्णद्वैपायनो व्यासो वेदव्यासो महानृषिः ॥३-३२७-१५॥
hanta te kathayiṣyāmi yan me pṛṣṭaḥ purā guruḥ। kṛṣṇadvaipāyano vyāso vedavyāso mahānṛṣiḥ ॥3-327-15॥

सुमन्तुर्जैमिनिश्चैव पैलश्च सुदृढव्रतः। अहं चतुर्थः शिष्यो वै पञ्चमश्च शुकः स्मृतः ॥३-३२७-१६॥
sumantur jaiminiś caiva pailaś ca sudṛḍhavrataḥ। ahaṃ caturthaḥ śiṣyo vai pañcamaś ca śukaḥ smṛtaḥ ॥3-327-16॥

(Well, I have been informed, O gods, by you; let there be auspiciousness for you. Also, this thought has arisen in me, which is considered by you.)
Well, O gods, I have been informed by you; may auspiciousness be yours. I too have now developed the same thought that you have considered. (3-327-36)
लोकतन्त्रस्य कृत्स्नस्य कथं कार्यः परिग्रहः। कथं बलक्षयो न स्याद्युष्माकं ह्यात्मनश्च मे ॥३-३२७-३७॥
lokatantrasya kṛtsnasya kathaṃ kāryaḥ parigrahaḥ। kathaṃ balakṣayo na syādyuṣmākaṃ hyātmanaśca me ॥3-327-37॥

(Of the entire system of governance by the people, of the whole, how is the action of acceptance? How would loss of strength not be of you indeed and of self and of me?)
How should the acceptance of the entire system of governance by the people be carried out? How can the loss of strength not occur for you, for your own selves, and for me? (3-327-37)
इतः सर्वेऽपि गच्छामः शरणं लोकसाक्षिणम्। महापुरुषमव्यक्तं स नो वक्ष्यति यद्धितम् ॥३-३२७-३८॥
itaḥ sarve'pi gacchāmaḥ śaraṇaṃ lokasākṣiṇam। mahāpuruṣamavyaktaṃ sa no vakṣyati yaddhitam ॥3-327-38॥
[इतः (itaḥ) - from here; सर्वे (sarve) - all; अपि (api) - also; गच्छामः (gacchāmaḥ) - we go; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; लोकसाक्षिणम् (lokasākṣiṇam) - witness of the world; महापुरुषम् (mahāpuruṣam) - great person; अव्यक्तम् (avyaktam) - unmanifest; स (sa) - he; नः (naḥ) - to us; वक्ष्यति (vakṣyati) - will speak; यत् (yat) - which; हितम् (hitam) - benefit;]
(From here all also we go refuge witness of the world; great person unmanifest; he to us will speak which benefit.)
From here, let us all go to the refuge of the witness of the world, the great unmanifest person; he will tell us what is beneficial. (3-327-38)
ततस्ते ब्रह्मणा सार्धमृषयो विबुधास्तथा। क्षीरोदस्योत्तरं कूलं जग्मुर्लोकहितार्थिनः ॥३-३२७-३९॥
tataste brahmaṇā sārdham ṛṣayo vibudhās tathā। kṣīrodasyottaraṃ kūlaṃ jagmur lokahitārthinaḥ ॥3-327-39॥

(Then they, together with Brahmā, the sages and also the gods, went to the northern shore of the Milk Ocean, desiring the welfare of the world.)

ते तपः समुपातिष्ठन्ब्रह्मोक्तं वेदकल्पितम्। स महानियमो नाम तपश्चर्या सुदारुणा ॥३-३२७-४०॥
te tapaḥ samupātiṣṭhan brahmoktaṃ vedakalpitam। sa mahāniyamo nāma tapaścar yā sudāruṇā ॥3-327-40॥

(They austerity duly performed declared by Brahmā prescribed by the Veda. That great observance named austerity-practice very severe.)

ऊर्ध्वं दृष्टिर्बाहवश्च एकाग्रं च मनोऽभवत्। एकपादस्थिताः सम्यक्काष्ठभूताः समाहिताः ॥३-३२७-४१॥
ūrdhvaṃ dṛṣṭirbāhavaśca ekāgraṃ ca mano'bhavat। ekapādasthitāḥ samyakkāṣṭhabhūtāḥ samāhitāḥ ॥3-327-41॥

Their gaze was upwards, arms (raised), and their mind became one-pointed; standing properly on one foot, they became like wood, fully concentrated. (3-327-41)
दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रं ते तपस्तप्त्वा तदुत्तमम्। शुश्रुवुर्मधुरां वाणीं वेदवेदाङ्गभूषिताम् ॥३-३२७-४२॥
divyaṃ varṣasahasraṃ te tapastaptvā taduttamam। śuśruvur madhurāṃ vāṇīṃ vedavedāṅgabhūṣitām ॥3-327-42॥
[दिव्यं (divyaṃ) - divine; वर्षसहस्रं (varṣasahasraṃ) - thousand years; ते (te) - your; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; तप्त्वा (taptvā) - having performed; तत् (tat) - that; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme; शुश्रुवुः (śuśruvuḥ) - they heard; मधुरां (madhurāṃ) - sweet; वाणीं (vāṇīṃ) - voice; वेदवेदाङ्गभूषिताम् (vedavedāṅgabhūṣitām) - adorned with Veda and Vedāṅga;]
(Having performed your divine thousand years of austerity, that supreme (austerity), they heard a sweet voice adorned with Veda and Vedāṅga.)
After you had performed that supreme divine austerity for a thousand years, they heard a sweet voice adorned with the Veda and Vedāṅgas. (3-327-42)
भो भोः सब्रह्मका देवा ऋषयश्च तपोधनाः। स्वागतेनार्च्य वः सर्वाञ्श्रावये वाक्यमुत्तमम् ॥३-३२७-४३॥
bho bhoḥ sabrahmakā devā ṛṣayaś ca tapodhanāḥ। svāgatenārcya vaḥ sarvāñ śrāvaye vākyam uttamam ॥3-327-43॥

(O O together with Brahmā gods sages and ascetics with welcome having worshipped you all all I shall announce speech excellent.)
O, O, gods together with Brahmā, sages and ascetics! Having welcomed and worshipped you all, I shall announce to all of you the excellent statement. (3-327-43)
विज्ञातं वो मया कार्यं तच्च लोकहितं महत्। प्रवृत्तियुक्तं कर्तव्यं युष्मत्प्राणोपबृंहणम् ॥३-३२७-४४॥
vijñātaṃ vo mayā kāryaṃ tac ca lokahitaṃ mahat। pravṛttiyuktaṃ kartavyaṃ yuṣmat-prāṇopabṛṃhaṇam ॥3-327-44॥
[विज्ञातं (vijñātam) - known; वः (vaḥ) - by you; मया (mayā) - by me; कार्यं (kāryam) - action; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; लोकहितं (lokahitam) - welfare of the world; महत् (mahat) - great; प्रवृत्तियुक्तं (pravṛttiyuktam) - endowed with activity; कर्तव्यं (kartavyam) - to be done; युष्मत् (yuṣmat) - your; प्राण (prāṇa) - life; उपबृंहणम् (upabṛṃhaṇam) - strengthening;]
(Known by you, by me, the action, that and the great welfare of the world; endowed with activity, to be done, your life strengthening.)
The action, which is known to both you and me, is indeed the great welfare of the world; it is to be performed with activity, as it strengthens your lives. (3-327-44)
सुतप्तं वस्तपो देवा ममाराधनकाम्यया। भोक्ष्यथास्य महासत्त्वास्तपसः फलमुत्तमम् ॥३-३२७-४५॥
sutaptaṃ vas tapo devā mamārādhanakāmyayā। bhokṣyathāsya mahāsattvās tapasaḥ phalam uttamam ॥3-327-45॥
[सुतप्तं (sutaptaṃ) - well-performed; वः (vaḥ) - your; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; देवाः (devāḥ) - O gods; मम (mama) - my; आराधन (ārādhana) - worship; काम्यया (kāmyayā) - with the desire; भोक्ष्यथ (bhokṣyatha) - you will enjoy; अस्य (asya) - of this; महासत्त्वाः (mahāsattvāḥ) - O great beings; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of austerity; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme;]
(Well-performed your austerity, O gods, with the desire for my worship; you will enjoy of this, O great beings, the supreme fruit of austerity.)
O gods, your austerity has been well-performed with the desire to worship me; O great beings, you will enjoy the supreme fruit of this austerity. (3-327-45)
एष ब्रह्मा लोकगुरुः सर्वलोकपितामहः। यूयं च विबुधश्रेष्ठा मां यजध्वं समाहिताः ॥३-३२७-४६॥
eṣa brahmā lokaguruḥ sarvalokapitāmahaḥ। yūyaṃ ca vibudhaśreṣṭhā māṃ yajadhvaṃ samāhitāḥ ॥3-327-46॥

(This Brahmā, teacher of the worlds, grandfather of all worlds. You and the best among the wise, worship me with concentration.)
This is Brahmā, the teacher and grandfather of all the worlds. You, the foremost among the wise, worship me with focused minds. (3-327-46)
सर्वे भागान्कल्पयध्वं यज्ञेषु मम नित्यशः। तथा श्रेयो विधास्यामि यथाधीकारमीश्वराः ॥३-३२७-४७॥
sarve bhāgān kalpayadhvaṃ yajñeṣu mama nityaśaḥ। tathā śreyo vidhāsyāmi yathādhikāram īśvarāḥ ॥3-327-47॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; भागान् (bhāgān) - shares; कल्पयध्वं (kalpayadhvaṃ) - assign (you all); यज्ञेषु (yajñeṣu) - in sacrifices; मम (mama) - my; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - always; तथा (tathā) - thus; श्रेयो (śreyo) - better; विधास्यामि (vidhāsyāmi) - I shall arrange; यथा (yathā) - according to; अधिकारम् (adhikāram) - authority; ईश्वराः (īśvarāḥ) - O lords;]
(All shares assign (you all) in sacrifices my always. Thus better I shall arrange according to authority O lords.)
Assign all shares to me always in sacrifices. Thus, O lords, I shall arrange for better results according to authority. (3-327-47)
श्रुत्वैतद्देवदेवस्य वाक्यं हृष्टतनूरुहाः। ततस्ते विबुधाः सर्वे ब्रह्मा ते च महर्षयः ॥३-३२७-४८॥
śrutvaitaddevadevasya vākyaṃ hṛṣṭatanūruhāḥ। tataste vibudhāḥ sarve brahmā te ca maharṣayaḥ ॥3-327-48॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; एतत् (etat) - this; देवदेवस्य (devadevasya) - of the god of gods; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; हृष्टतनूरुहाः (hṛṣṭatanūruhāḥ) - with bristling body hair (from joy); ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; विबुधाः (vibudhāḥ) - the wise (gods); सर्वे (sarve) - all; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages;]
(Having heard this speech of the god of gods, with bristling body hair (from joy), then they, all the wise (gods), Brahmā, they and the great sages.)
When they heard this speech of the god of gods, their bodies thrilled with joy; then all the gods, Brahmā, and the great sages were delighted. (3-327-48)
वेददृष्टेन विधिना वैष्णवं क्रतुमाहरन्। तस्मिन्सत्रे तदा ब्रह्मा स्वयं भागमकल्पयत् ॥ देवा देवर्षयश्चैव सर्वे भागानकल्पयन् ॥३-३२७-४९॥
vedadṛṣṭena vidhinā vaiṣṇavaṃ kratumāharan। tasminsatre tadā brahmā svayaṃ bhāgamakalpayat ॥ devā devarṣayaścaiva sarve bhāgānakalpayān ॥3-327-49॥

(By what is seen in the Veda, by the rule, a sacrifice relating to Viṣṇu they performed. In that sacrifice then Brahmā himself assigned a portion. The gods and the divine sages indeed all assigned portions. (3-327-49))

ते कार्तयुगधर्माणो भागाः परमसत्कृताः। प्रापुरादित्यवर्णं तं पुरुषं तमसः परम् ॥ बृहन्तं सर्वगं देवमीशानं वरदं प्रभुम् ॥३-३२७-५०॥
te kārtayugadharmāṇo bhāgāḥ paramasatkṛtāḥ। prāpur ādityavarṇaṃ taṃ puruṣaṃ tamasaḥ param ॥ bṛhantaṃ sarvagaṃ devam īśānaṃ varadaṃ prabhum ॥3-327-50॥
[ते (te) - they; कार्तयुगधर्माणः (kārtayugadharmāṇaḥ) - having the dharmas of the Kṛta Yuga; भागाः (bhāgāḥ) - parts; परमसत्कृताः (paramasatkṛtāḥ) - supremely honored; प्रापुर् (prāpur) - attained; आदित्यवर्णम् (ādityavarṇam) - having the color of the sun; तम् (tam) - that; पुरुषम् (puruṣam) - person; तमसः (tamasaḥ) - of darkness; परम् (param) - beyond; बृहन्तम् (bṛhantam) - great; सर्वगम् (sarvagam) - all-pervading; देवम् (devam) - god; ईशानम् (īśānam) - lord; वरदम् (varadam) - bestower of boons; प्रभुम् (prabhum) - master;]
(They, having the dharmas of the Kṛta Yuga, parts, supremely honored, attained the sun-colored, that person, beyond darkness, great, all-pervading, god, lord, bestower of boons, master.)
Those parts, possessing the dharmas of the Kṛta Yuga and being supremely honored, attained that person of sun-like color, who is beyond darkness, great, all-pervading, the god, the lord, the bestower of boons, the master. (3-327-50)
ततोऽथ वरदो देवस्तान्सर्वानमरान्स्थितान्। अशरीरो बभाषेदं वाक्यं खस्थो महेश्वरः ॥३-३२७-५१॥
tato'tha varado devas tān sarvān amarán sthitān। aśarīro babhāṣedaṃ vākyaṃ khastho maheśvaraḥ ॥3-327-51॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अथ (atha) - afterwards; वरदः (varadaḥ) - the giver of boons; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; तान् (tān) - those; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अमरान् (amarān) - immortals; स्थितान् (sthitān) - standing; अशरीरः (aśarīraḥ) - bodiless; बभाषे (babhāṣe) - spoke; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; खस्थः (khasthaḥ) - abiding in the sky; महेश्वरः (maheśvaraḥ) - the great lord;]
(Then afterwards, the giver of boons, the god, to those all immortals standing, bodiless, spoke this speech, abiding in the sky, the great lord.)
Then, the boon-giving god, the great lord Maheśvara, abiding in the sky and bodiless, spoke these words to all the assembled immortals. (3-327-51)
येन यः कल्पितो भागः स तथा समुपागतः। प्रीतोऽहं प्रदिशाम्यद्य फलमावृत्तिलक्षणम् ॥३-३२७-५२॥
yena yaḥ kalpito bhāgaḥ sa tathā samupāgataḥ। prīto'ham pradiśāmyadya phalamāvṛttilakṣaṇam ॥3-327-52॥

(By whom who imagined portion, he thus has come; pleased I grant today fruit characterized by repetition.)

एतद्वो लक्षणं देवा मत्प्रसादसमुद्भवम्। यूयं यज्ञैरिज्यमानाः समाप्तवरदक्षिणैः ॥ युगे युगे भविष्यध्वं प्रवृत्तिफलभोगिनः ॥३-३२७-५३॥
etad vo lakṣaṇaṃ devā matprasādasamudbhavam। yūyaṃ yajñair ijyamānāḥ samāptavaradakṣiṇaiḥ ॥ yuge yuge bhaviṣyadhvaṃ pravṛttiphalabhoginaḥ ॥3-327-53॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; वः (vaḥ) - for you (plural); लक्षणम् (lakṣaṇam) - mark; sign; characteristic; देवाः (devāḥ) - O gods; मत् (mat) - my; प्रसाद (prasāda) - grace; favor; समुद्भवम् (samudbhavam) - arisen from; originated from; यूयम् (yūyam) - you (plural); यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - by sacrifices; इज्यमानाः (ijyamānāḥ) - being worshipped; being propitiated; समाप्त (samāpta) - completed; finished; वर (vara) - boon; gift; दक्षिणैः (dakṣiṇaiḥ) - with offerings; with gifts; युगे युगे (yuge yuge) - in every age; in every epoch; भविष्यध्वम् (bhaviṣyadhvam) - you shall be; you will become; प्रवृत्ति (pravṛtti) - activity; action; फल (phala) - fruit; result; भोगिनः (bhoginaḥ) - enjoyers; experiencers;]
(This is your mark, O gods, arisen from my grace. You, being worshipped by sacrifices completed with boon-offerings, in every age shall be enjoyers of the fruits of action.)
This is your characteristic, O gods, which has arisen from my grace. You, being worshipped through sacrifices completed with gifts and boons, shall in every age be the enjoyers of the fruits of action. (3-327-53)
यज्ञैर्ये चापि यक्ष्यन्ति सर्वलोकेषु वै सुराः। कल्पयिष्यन्ति वो भागांस्ते नरा वेदकल्पितान् ॥३-३२७-५४॥
yajñair ye cāpi yakṣyanti sarvalokeṣu vai surāḥ। kalpayiṣyanti vo bhāgāṃs te narā vedakalpitān ॥3-327-54॥
[यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - by sacrifices; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; यक्ष्यन्ति (yakṣyanti) - will worship; सर्वलोकेषु (sarvalokeṣu) - in all worlds; वै (vai) - indeed; सुराः (surāḥ) - gods; कल्पयिष्यन्ति (kalpayiṣyanti) - will assign; वः (vo) - to you; भागान् (bhāgān) - shares; ते (te) - those; नराः (narāḥ) - men; वेदकल्पितान् (vedakalpitān) - established by the Veda;]
(By sacrifices, who and also will worship in all worlds indeed the gods, will assign to you shares those men established by the Veda.)
Those men who will worship the gods with sacrifices in all worlds, indeed, will assign to you those shares that are established by the Veda. (3-327-54)
यो मे यथा कल्पितवान्भागमस्मिन्महाक्रतौ। स तथा यज्ञभागार्हो वेदसूत्रे मया कृतः ॥३-३२७-५५॥

(Who has apportioned my share as such in this great sacrifice, he in that way, worthy of sacrificial share, in the Veda-sūtra, by me, is made.)

याः क्रियाः प्रचरिष्यन्ति प्रवृत्तिफलसत्कृताः। ताभिराप्यायितबला लोकान्वै धारयिष्यथ ॥३-३२७-५७॥

(Which actions will be performed, honored by the fruits of activity; by those, having strength increased, you will indeed support the worlds.)

यूयं हि भाविता लोके सर्वयज्ञेषु मानवैः। मां ततो भावयिष्यध्वमेषा वो भावना मम ॥३-३२७-५८॥

(This creation of yours, imagined by the quality of activity, has been done by me, O best of gods, as long as the destruction of the aeon thus. You all think of the welfare of the world according to authority, O lords. (3-327-60))

(Who as created creature, in whichever action and in engagement or in withdrawal or that fruit he enjoys helplessly.)

एष लोकगुरुर्ब्रह्मा जगदादिकरः प्रभुः। एष माता पिता चैव युष्माकं च पितामहः ॥ मयानुशिष्टो भविता सर्वभूतवरप्रदः ॥३-३२७-६९॥

(This (person), teacher of the world, Brahmā, maker of the beginning of the world, lord. This (person) is mother, father, and indeed your grandfather also. Instructed by me, he will be the giver of boons to all beings.)

अस्य चैवानुजो रुद्रो ललाटाद्यः समुत्थितः। ब्रह्मानुशिष्टो भविता सर्वत्रसवरप्रदः ॥३-३२७-७०॥
asya caivānujo rudro lalāṭādyaḥ samutthitaḥ। brahmānushiṣṭo bhavitā sarvatrasavarapradaḥ ॥3-327-70॥

(Of him and indeed the younger brother Rudra, who arose from the forehead, instructed by Brahmā, will be the giver of boons everywhere.)

(This Kṛta Yuga named time excellent is proceeding. Non-violence, sacrificial animals in this yuga, this otherwise. Four-footed entire dharma will be here indeed, gods.)
This period called Kṛta Yuga, the excellent time, is now proceeding. In this yuga, non-violence and sacrificial animals are as they should be, not otherwise. Here, O gods, dharma exists in its entirety with all four feet. (3-327-73)
ततस्त्रेतायुगं नाम त्रयी यत्र भविष्यति। प्रोक्षिता यत्र पशवो वधं प्राप्स्यन्ति वै मखे ॥ तत्र पादचतुर्थो वै धर्मस्य न भविष्यति ॥३-३२७-७४॥
tatastretāyugaṃ nāma trayī yatra bhaviṣyati। prokṣitā yatra paśavo vadhaṃ prāpsyanti vai makhe ॥ tatra pādacaturtho vai dharmasya na bhaviṣyati ॥3-327-74॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; त्रेता-युगं (tretā-yugaṃ) - the Tretā age; नाम (nāma) - named; त्रयी (trayī) - the three Vedas; यत्र (yatra) - where; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; प्रोक्षिता (prokṣitā) - sprinkled (with holy water); यत्र (yatra) - where; पशवः (paśavaḥ) - animals; वधं (vadhaṃ) - killing; प्राप्स्यन्ति (prāpsyanti) - will obtain; वै (vai) - indeed; मखे (makhe) - in the sacrifice; तत्र (tatra) - there; पाद-चतुर्थः (pāda-caturthaḥ) - the fourth part; वै (vai) - indeed; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; न (na) - not; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Then the age named Tretā, where the three Vedas will be; where animals sprinkled (with holy water) will indeed obtain killing in the sacrifice. There, indeed, the fourth part of dharma will not be.)
Then comes the age called Tretā, in which the three Vedas will exist; where animals, after being sprinkled, will indeed be killed in sacrifice. There, indeed, the fourth part of dharma will not remain. (3-327-74)
ततो वै द्वापरं नाम मिश्रः कालो भविष्यति। द्विपादहीनो धर्मश्च युगे तस्मिन्भविष्यति ॥३-३२७-७५॥
tato vai dvāparaṃ nāma miśraḥ kālo bhaviṣyati। dvipādahīno dharmaś ca yuge tasmin bhaviṣyati ॥3-327-75॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from that; वै (vai) - indeed; द्वापरं (dvāparam) - Dvāpara; नाम (nāma) - named; मिश्रः (miśraḥ) - mixed; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; द्विपादहीनः (dvipādahīnaḥ) - deprived of two feet; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; च (ca) - and; युगे (yuge) - in the age; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(From that indeed Dvāpara named mixed time will be. Deprived of two feet dharma and in the age in that will be.)
After that, indeed, there will be a time called Dvāpara, which is mixed. In that age, dharma will exist deprived of two feet. (3-327-75)
ततस्तिष्येऽथ सम्प्राप्ते युगे कलिपुरस्कृते। एकपादस्थितो धर्मो यत्र तत्र भविष्यति ॥३-३२७-७६॥
tatastiṣye'tha samprāpte yuge kalipuraskṛte। ekapādasthito dharmo yatra tatra bhaviṣyati ॥3-327-76॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तिष्ये (tiṣye) - in the Tiṣya (Puṣya) (nakṣatra); अथ (atha) - then; सम्प्राप्ते (samprāpte) - having arrived; युगे (yuge) - in the age; कलि-पुरस्कृते (kali-puraskṛte) - with Kali (the Kali age) at the forefront; एक-पाद-स्थितः (eka-pāda-sthitaḥ) - standing on one foot; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - Dharma; यत्र (yatra) - where; तत्र (tatra) - there; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Then, in Tiṣya, then, having arrived, in the age, with Kali at the forefront, standing on one foot, Dharma, where, there, will be.)
Then, when the age arrives in Tiṣya with Kali at the forefront, Dharma will stand on one foot wherever it exists. (3-327-76)

एकपादस्थिते धर्मे यत्रक्वचनगामिनि। कथं कर्तव्यमस्माभिर्भगवंस्तद्वदस्व नः ॥३-३२७-७७॥
ekapādasthite dharme yatrakvacanagāmini। kathaṃ kartavyamasmābhirbhagavaṃstadvadasva naḥ ॥3-327-77॥
[एकपादस्थिते (ekapādasthite) - in one-footed state; standing on one leg; धर्मे (dharme) - in dharma; in righteousness; यत्रक्वचनगामिनि (yatrakvacanagāmini) - going anywhere; moving wherever; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - to be done; duty; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O revered one; तत् (tat) - that; वदस्व (vadasva) - please tell; नः (naḥ) - to us;]
(In the one-footed state, in dharma, moving wherever, how is the duty to be done by us, O revered one, that please tell to us.)
O revered one, in this state where dharma stands on one foot and moves anywhere, how should we act? Please tell us that. (3-327-77)
श्रीभगवानुवाच॥

यत्र वेदाश्च यज्ञाश्च तपः सत्यं दमस्तथा। अहिंसाधर्मसंयुक्ताः प्रचरेयुः सुरोत्तमाः ॥३-३२७-७८॥
yatra vedāś ca yajñāś ca tapaḥ satyaṃ damas tathā। ahiṃsā-dharma-saṃyuktāḥ pracareyuḥ surottamāḥ ॥3-327-78॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; वेदाः (vedāḥ) - Vedas; च (ca) - and; यज्ञाः (yajñāḥ) - sacrifices; च (ca) - and; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; दमः (damaḥ) - self-restraint; तथा (tathā) - also; अहिंसा (ahiṃsā) - non-violence; धर्म (dharma) - righteousness; संयुक्ताः (saṃyuktāḥ) - endowed with; प्रचरेयुः (pracareyuḥ) - would move about; सुरोत्तमाः (surottamāḥ) - best of the gods;]
(Where Vedas and sacrifices and austerity, truth, self-restraint also, non-violence, righteousness, endowed with, would move about, best of the gods.)
Where the Vedas, sacrifices, austerity, truth, self-restraint, non-violence, and righteousness are present, the best of the gods endowed with these qualities would move about. (3-327-78)
स वै देशः सेवितव्यो मा वोऽधर्मः पदा स्पृशेत् ॥३-३२७-७८॥
sa vai deśaḥ sevitavyo mā vo'dharmaḥ padā spṛśet ॥3-327-78॥
[स (sa) - that; वै (vai) - indeed; देशः (deśaḥ) - place; सेवितव्यो (sevitavyo) - should be frequented; मा (mā) - not; वः (vaḥ) - by you; अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - unrighteousness; पदा (padā) - by the foot; स्पृशेत् (spṛśet) - should touch;]
(That indeed place should be frequented; not by you unrighteousness by the foot should touch.)
That place alone should be frequented; let not unrighteousness be touched by your foot. (3-327-78)
व्यास उवाच॥

तेऽनुशिष्टा भगवता देवाः सर्षिगणास्तथा। नमस्कृत्वा भगवते जग्मुर्देशान्यथेप्सितान् ॥३-३२७-७९॥
te'nuśiṣṭā bhagavatā devāḥ saṛṣigaṇās tathā। namaskṛtvā bhagavate jagmur deśān yathepsitān ॥3-327-79॥
[ते (te) - they; अनुशिष्टा (anuśiṣṭāḥ) - instructed; भगवता (bhagavatā) - by the Blessed One; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; स (sa) - with; ऋषिगणाः (ṛṣigaṇāḥ) - the groups of sages; तथा (tathā) - also; नमस्कृत्वा (namaskṛtvā) - having bowed; भगवते (bhagavate) - to the Blessed One; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they went; देशान् (deśān) - to the regions; यथ (yathā) - as; इप्सितान् (ipsitān) - desired;]
(They, instructed by the Blessed One, the gods with the groups of sages also, having bowed to the Blessed One, went to the regions as desired.)
Thus instructed by the Blessed One, the gods along with the groups of sages, after bowing to the Blessed One, went to their desired regions. (3-327-79)
गतेषु त्रिदिवौकःसु ब्रह्मैकः पर्यवस्थितः। दिदृक्षुर्भगवन्तं तमनिरुद्धतनौ स्थितम् ॥३-३२७-८०॥
gateṣu tridivaukahsu brahmaikaḥ paryavasthitaḥ। didṛkṣurbhagavantaṃ tamaniruddhatanau sthitam ॥3-327-80॥
[गतेषु (gateṣu) - having gone; in those who have gone; त्रिदिवौकःसु (tridivaukahsu) - among the dwellers of heaven; in the celestial beings; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahmā; the creator; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; one; पर्यवस्थितः (paryavasthitaḥ) - remained; was present; दिदृक्षुः (didṛkṣuḥ) - desiring to see; wishing to behold; भगवन्तं (bhagavantaṃ) - the Blessed Lord; the revered one; तम् (tam) - him; that one; अनिरुद्धतनौ (aniruddhatanau) - in the form of Aniruddha; having the body of Aniruddha; स्थितम् (sthitam) - standing; situated;]
(When those who had gone, among the dwellers of heaven, Brahmā alone remained; desiring to see the Blessed Lord, him, standing in the form of Aniruddha.)
When all the dwellers of heaven had departed, only Brahmā remained, wishing to behold the Blessed Lord standing there in the form of Aniruddha. (3-327-80)
तं देवो दर्शयामास कृत्वा हयशिरो महत्। साङ्गानावर्तयन्वेदान्कमण्डलुगणित्रधृक् ॥३-३२७-८१॥
taṃ devo darśayāmāsa kṛtvā hayaśiro mahat। sāṅgānāvartayan vedān kamaṇḍalu-gaṇitra-dhṛk ॥3-327-81॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - showed; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; हयशिरः (hayaśiraḥ) - horse-headed; महत् (mahat) - great; साङ्गान् (sāṅgān) - with limbs (with parts); आवर्तयन् (āvartayan) - reciting; वेदान् (vedān) - the Vedas; कमण्डलु (kamaṇḍalu) - water-pot; गणित्र (gaṇitra) - rosary; धृक् (dhṛk) - holding;]
(Him the god showed, having made (him) horse-headed, great; with limbs reciting the Vedas, holding a water-pot and rosary.)
The god showed him, having made him great and horse-headed, reciting the Vedas with all their parts, and holding a water-pot and a rosary. (3-327-81)
ततोऽश्वशिरसं दृष्ट्वा तं देवममितौजसम्। लोककर्ता प्रभुर्ब्रह्मा लोकानां हितकाम्यया ॥३-३२७-८२॥
tato'śvaśirasaṃ dṛṣṭvā taṃ devam amitaujasaṃ। lokakartā prabhur brahmā lokānāṃ hitakāmyayā ॥3-327-82॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अश्वशिरसं (aśvaśirasam) - horse-headed; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तम् (tam) - him; देवम् (devam) - divine being; अमितौजसम् (amitaujasaṃ) - of immeasurable energy; लोककर्ता (lokakartā) - creator of the worlds; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - lord; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; हितकाम्यया (hitakāmyayā) - with the desire for welfare;]
(Then, having seen the horse-headed divine being of immeasurable energy, Brahmā, the lord, creator of the worlds, with the desire for the welfare of the worlds.)
Then, seeing that horse-headed divine being of immeasurable energy, Brahmā, the lord and creator of the worlds, out of desire for the welfare of the worlds, (3-327-82)
मूर्ध्ना प्रणम्य वरदं तस्थौ प्राञ्जलिरग्रतः। स परिष्वज्य देवेन वचनं श्रावितस्तदा ॥३-३२७-८३॥
mūrdhnā praṇamya varadaṃ tasthau prāñjalir agrataḥ। sa pariṣvajya devena vacanaṃ śrāvitās tadā ॥3-327-83॥
[मूर्ध्ना (mūrdhnā) - with the head; by the head; प्रणम्य (praṇamya) - having bowed; after bowing; वरदं (varadam) - the giver of boons; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - in front; before; सः (saḥ) - he; परिष्वज्य (pariṣvajya) - having embraced; after embracing; देवेन (devena) - by the god; by the deity; वचनं (vacanam) - word; speech; श्रावितः (śrāvitaḥ) - having been made to hear; having been told; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time;]
(With the head having bowed to the giver of boons, he stood with joined palms in front. He, having been embraced by the god, was then made to hear the word.)
Having bowed his head to the giver of boons, he stood before him with joined palms. Then, after being embraced by the god, he was made to hear the words. (3-327-83)
लोककार्यगतीः सर्वास्त्वं चिन्तय यथाविधि। धाता त्वं सर्वभूतानां त्वं प्रभुर्जगतो गुरुः ॥ त्वय्यावेशितभारोऽहं धृतिं प्राप्स्याम्यथाञ्जसा ॥३-३२७-८४॥
lokakāryagatīḥ sarvāstvaṃ cintaya yathāvidhi। dhātā tvaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ tvaṃ prabhurjagato guruḥ ॥ tvayyāveśitabhāro'haṃ dhṛtiṃ prāpsyāmyathāñjasā ॥3-327-84॥
[लोक (loka) - world; कार्य (kārya) - action; गतीः (gatīḥ) - courses; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; चिन्तय (cintaya) - consider; यथा (yathā) - as; विधि (vidhi) - rule; धाता (dhātā) - creator; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; सर्व (sarva) - all; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - lord; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; आवेशित (āveśita) - placed; भारः (bhāraḥ) - burden; अहम् (aham) - I; धृतिम् (dhṛtim) - steadfastness; प्राप्स्यामि (prāpsyāmi) - will obtain; अथ (atha) - then; अञ्जसा (añjasā) - easily; ३-३२७-८४ (3-327-84) - (3-327-84);]
(World action courses all you consider as rule. Creator you of all beings you lord of the world teacher. In you placed burden I steadfastness will obtain then easily. (3-327-84))
Consider all the courses of worldly actions as per the rule. You are the creator of all beings, you are the lord and teacher of the world. Having placed my burden upon you, I will easily attain steadfastness. (3-327-84)
यदा च सुरकार्यं ते अविषह्यं भविष्यति। प्रादुर्भावं गमिष्यामि तदात्मज्ञानदेशिकः ॥३-३२७-८५॥
yadā ca surakāryaṃ te aviṣahyaṃ bhaviṣyati। prādurbhāvaṃ gamiṣyāmi tadātmajñānadeśikaḥ ॥3-327-85॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; च (ca) - and; सुरकार्यं (surakāryam) - devas' work; ते (te) - to you; अविषह्यं (aviṣahyam) - unbearable; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; प्रादुर्भावं (prādurbhāvam) - manifestation; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I will go; तदात्मज्ञानदेशिकः (tadātmajñānadeśikaḥ) - that-self-knowledge-teacher;]
(When and the devas' work to you unbearable will become, manifestation I will go, that-self-knowledge-teacher.)
When the task of the gods becomes unbearable for you, I, as the teacher of that self-knowledge, will manifest myself. (3-327-85)
एवमुक्त्वा हयशिरास्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत। तेनानुशिष्टो ब्रह्मापि स्वं लोकमचिराद्गतः ॥३-३२७-८६॥
evam uktvā hayaśirās tatraiva antaradhīyata। tenānuśiṣṭo brahmā api svaṃ lokam acirād gataḥ ॥3-327-86॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; हयशिराः (hayaśirās) - Horse-headed (one); तत्र (tatra) - there; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared; तेन (tena) - by him; अनुशिष्टः (anuśiṣṭaḥ) - instructed; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; अपि (api) - also; स्वम् (svam) - his own; लोकम् (lokam) - world; अचिरात् (acirāt) - soon; गतः (gataḥ) - went;]
(Thus having spoken, the Horse-headed (one) indeed disappeared there. Instructed by him, Brahmā also soon went to his own world. (3-327-86))
After saying this, the Horse-headed one disappeared right there. Having been instructed by him, Brahmā too soon returned to his own world. (3-327-86)
एवमेष महाभागः पद्मनाभः सनातनः। यज्ञेष्वग्रहरः प्रोक्तो यज्ञधारी च नित्यदा ॥३-३२७-८७॥
evameṣa mahābhāgaḥ padmanābhaḥ sanātanaḥ। yajñeṣvagraharaḥ prokto yajñadhārī ca nityadā ॥3-327-87॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; महाभागः (mahābhāgaḥ) - greatly fortunate one; पद्मनाभः (padmanābhaḥ) - Padmanabha; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; यज्ञेषु (yajñeṣu) - in sacrifices; अग्रहरः (agraharaḥ) - the first receiver; प्रोक्तः (proktaḥ) - is said; यज्ञधारी (yajñadhārī) - bearer of sacrifice; च (ca) - and; नित्यदा (nityadā) - always;]
(Thus, this greatly fortunate one, Padmanabha, eternal, in sacrifices is said to be the first receiver, and always the bearer of sacrifice.)

निवृत्तिं चास्थितो धर्मं गतिमक्षयधर्मिणाम्। प्रवृत्तिधर्मान्विदधे कृत्वा लोकस्य चित्रताम् ॥३-३२७-८८॥
nivṛttiṃ cāsthito dharmaṃ gatim akṣaya-dharmiṇām। pravṛtti-dharmān vidadhe kṛtvā lokasya citratām ॥3-327-88॥
[निवृत्तिं (nivṛttiṃ) - cessation; withdrawal; च (ca) - and; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - having resorted to; having established; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - duty; righteousness; गतिम् (gatim) - path; way; अक्षयधर्मिणाम् (akṣaya-dharmiṇām) - of those whose dharma is imperishable; प्रवृत्तिधर्मान् (pravṛtti-dharmān) - those whose dharma is activity; विदधे (vidadhe) - he made; he established; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; having done; लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the world; चित्रताम् (citratām) - variety; diversity;]
(Having resorted to cessation and the dharma, the path of those whose dharma is imperishable; having made the dharmas of activity, he established the diversity of the world.)
Having established the path of cessation and righteousness for those whose dharma is imperishable, and having created the dharmas of activity, he brought about the diversity of the world. (3-327-88)
स आदिः स मध्यः स चान्तः प्रजानां; स धाता स धेयः स कर्ता स कार्यम्। युगान्ते स सुप्तः सुसङ्क्षिप्य लोका; न्युगादौ प्रबुद्धो जगद्ध्युत्ससर्ज ॥३-३२७-८९॥
sa ādiḥ sa madhyaḥ sa ca antaḥ prajānāṃ; sa dhātā sa dheyaḥ sa kartā sa kāryam। yugānte sa suptaḥ susaṅkṣipya lokān; nyugādau prabuddhaḥ jagat dhyutsasarja ॥3-327-89॥
[स (sa) - he; आदिः (ādiḥ) - beginning; स (sa) - he; मध्यः (madhyaḥ) - middle; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; अन्तः (antaḥ) - end; प्रजानां (prajānāṃ) - of beings; स (sa) - he; धाता (dhātā) - creator; स (sa) - he; धेयः (dheyaḥ) - goal; स (sa) - he; कर्ता (kartā) - doer; स (sa) - he; कार्यम् (kāryam) - action; युगान्ते (yugānte) - at the end of the age; स (sa) - he; सुप्तः (suptaḥ) - asleep; सुसङ्क्षिप्य (susaṅkṣipya) - having well contracted; लोका (lokān) - worlds; न्युगादौ (nyugādau) - at the beginning of the new age; प्रबुद्धः (prabuddhaḥ) - awakened; जगत् (jagat) - the world; ध्युत्ससर्ज (dhyutsasarja) - he emitted; ३-३२७-८९ (3-327-89) - (3-327-89);]
(He (is) the beginning, he (is) the middle, he and (is) the end of beings; he (is) the creator, he (is) the goal, he (is) the doer, he (is) the action. At the end of the age, he (is) asleep, having well contracted the worlds; at the beginning of the new age, awakened, he emitted the world. (3-327-89))
He is the beginning, the middle, and the end of beings; he is the creator, the goal, the doer, and the action. At the end of the age, he sleeps, having contracted the worlds; at the dawn of the new age, awakened, he creates the world. (3-327-89)
तस्मै नमध्वं देवाय निर्गुणाय गुणात्मने। अजाय विश्वरूपाय धाम्ने सर्वदिवौकसाम् ॥३-३२७-९०॥
tasmai namadhvaṃ devāya nirguṇāya guṇātmane. ajāya viśvarūpāya dhāmne sarvadivaukasām ॥3-327-90॥
[तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; नमध्वं (namadhvaṃ) - bow (you all); देवाय (devāya) - to the god; निर्गुणाय (nirguṇāya) - to the one without qualities; गुणात्मने (guṇātmane) - whose essence is qualities; अजाय (ajāya) - to the unborn; विश्वरूपाय (viśvarūpāya) - to the one of universal form; धाम्ने (dhāmne) - to the abode; सर्वदिवौकसाम् (sarvadivaukasām) - of all dwellers of heaven;]
(To him bow (you all), to the god, to the one without qualities, whose essence is qualities, to the unborn, to the one of universal form, to the abode of all dwellers of heaven.)
Bow to him, the god who is without qualities, whose essence is qualities, the unborn, the one of universal form, the abode of all the dwellers of heaven. (3-327-90)
महाभूताधिपतये रुद्राणां पतये तथा। आदित्यपतये चैव वसूनां पतये तथा ॥३-३२७-९१॥
mahābhūtādhipataye rudrāṇāṃ pataye tathā। ādityapataye caiva vasūnāṃ pataye tathā ॥3-327-91॥

guhyāya jñānadṛśyāya akṣarāya kṣarāya ca। eṣa devaḥ sañcarati sarvatragatiravyayaḥ ॥3-327-96॥

(To the secret, to the one seen by knowledge, to the imperishable, to the perishable and; this divine being moves, having movement everywhere, imperishable.)

स चास्माकमुपाध्यायः सहास्माभिर्विशां पते। चतुर्वेदोद्गताभिश्च ऋग्भिस्तमभितुष्टुवे ॥३-३२७-१००॥
sa cāsmākam-upādhyāyaḥ sahāsmābhir-viśāṃ pate। caturvedodgatābhiś-ca ṛgbhis-tam-abhituṣṭuve ॥3-327-100॥

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्नित्यं यश्चेदं परिकीर्तयेत्। नमो भगवते कृत्वा समाहितमना नरः ॥३-३२७-१०२॥
yaś cedaṃ śṛṇuyān nityaṃ yaś cedaṃ parikīrtayet। namo bhagavate kṛtvā samāhitamanā naraḥ ॥3-327-102॥

(Who and this may hear always, who and this may recite, obeisance to the Lord having done, with concentrated mind, man.)
Whoever always hears this or recites this, having offered obeisance to the Lord with a concentrated mind, that man (does so). (3-327-102)
भवत्यरोगो द्युतिमान्बलरूपसमन्वितः। आतुरो मुच्यते रोगाद्बद्धो मुच्येत बन्धनात् ॥३-३२७-१०३॥
bhavatyarogo dyutimān balarūpasamanvitaḥ। ātiro mucyate rogād baddho mucyeta bandhanāt ॥3-327-103॥
[भवति (bhavati) - becomes; अरोगः (arogaḥ) - free from disease; द्युतिमान् (dyutimān) - possessed of radiance; बलरूपसमन्वितः (balarūpasamanvitaḥ) - endowed with strength and form; आतुरः (āturaḥ) - the afflicted; मुच्यते (mucyate) - is released; रोगात् (rogāt) - from disease; बद्धः (baddhaḥ) - the bound one; मुच्येत (mucyeta) - may be released; बन्धनात् (bandhanāt) - from bondage;]

(The desirer of desire may obtain desire, may attain long life. The brāhmaṇa may be knower of all Vedas, the kṣatriya may become victorious. The vaiśya may have abundant gain, the śūdra may attain happiness. (3-327-104))

(A sonless man obtains a son; a maiden indeed (obtains) the desired husband. A woman with retained fetus is released; a pregnant woman may give birth to a son. A barren woman attains childbirth, (and becomes) abundant in sons and grandsons.)

kṣemeṇa gacched adhvānam idaṃ yaḥ paṭhate pathi। yo yaṃ kāmaṃ kāmayate sa tam āpnoti ca dhruvam ॥3-327-106॥
[क्षेमेण (kṣemeṇa) - with safety; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; अध्वानम् (adhvānam) - the path; इदं (idaṃ) - this; यः (yaḥ) - who; पठते (paṭhate) - recites; पथि (pathi) - on the road; यः (yaḥ) - who; यम् (yam) - whichever; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; कामयते (kāmayate) - desires; स (sa) - he; तम् (tam) - that; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - obtains; च (ca) - and; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly;]
(With safety should go the path this who recites on the road; who whichever desire desires, he that obtains and certainly.)
Whoever recites this on the road should travel safely; whatever desire he wishes for, he certainly attains that. (3-327-106)
इदं महर्षेर्वचनं विनिश्चितं; महात्मनः पुरुषवरस्य कीर्तनम्। समागमं चर्षिदिवौकसामिमं; निशम्य भक्ताः सुसुखं लभन्ते ॥३-३२७-१०७॥
