śrutaṃ bhagavatas tasya māhātmyaṃ paramātmanaḥ। janma dharmagṛhe caiva naranārāyaṇātmakam ॥ mahāvarāhasaṛṣṭā ca piṇḍotpattiḥ purātanī ॥12-335-1॥

प्रवृत्तौ च निवृत्तौ च यो यथा परिकल्पितः। स तथा नः श्रुतो ब्रह्मन्कथ्यमानस्त्वयानघ ॥१२-३३५-२॥
pravṛttau ca nivṛttau ca yo yathā parikalpitaḥ। sa tathā naḥ śruto brahman kathyamānas tvayānagha ॥12-335-2॥

(In activity and in cessation and who as conceived; he so to us heard O Brahman being described by you O sinless one;)
O sinless one, O Brahman, as one is conceived in activity and in cessation, so he has been heard by us as you describe him. (12-335-2)
यच्च तत्कथितं पूर्वं त्वया हयशिरो महत्। हव्यकव्यभुजो विष्णोरुदक्पूर्वे महोदधौ ॥ तच्च दृष्टं भगवता ब्रह्मणा परमेष्ठिना ॥१२-३३५-३॥
yacca tatkathitaṃ pūrvaṃ tvayā hayaśiro mahat। havyakavyabhujo viṣṇor udakpūrve mahodadhau ॥ tacca dṛṣṭaṃ bhagavatā brahmaṇā parameṣṭhinā ॥12-335-3॥

किं तदुत्पादितं पूर्वं हरिणा लोकधारिणा। रूपं प्रभावमहतामपूर्वं धीमतां वर ॥१२-३३५-४॥
kiṁ tadutpāditaṁ pūrvaṁ hariṇā lokadhāriṇā। rūpaṁ prabhāvamahatāmapūrvaṁ dhīmatāṁ vara ॥12-335-4॥

दृष्ट्वा हि विबुधश्रेष्ठमपूर्वममितौजसम्। तदश्वशिरसं पुण्यं ब्रह्मा किमकरोन्मुने ॥१२-३३५-५॥
dṛṣṭvā hi vibudhaśreṣṭham apūrvam amitaujasaṃ। tad aśvaśirasaṃ puṇyaṃ brahmā kim akarot mune ॥12-335-5॥

O sage, having seen that unprecedented, immeasurably powerful, auspicious horse-headed being, the best among the gods, what did Brahmā do? (12-335-5)
एतन्नः संशयं ब्रह्मन्पुराणज्ञानसम्भवम्। कथयस्वोत्तममते महापुरुषनिर्मितम् ॥ पाविताः स्म त्वया ब्रह्मन्पुण्यां कथयता कथाम् ॥१२-३३५-६॥
etannaḥ saṁśayaṁ brahman purāṇajñānasambhavam। kathayasvottamamate mahāpuruṣanirmitam ॥ pāvitāḥ sma tvayā brahman puṇyāṁ kathayatā kathām ॥12-335-6॥

(This our doubt, O Brahman, ancient knowledge originated; tell (us), O excellent-minded one, (that which is) created by great persons. Purified indeed (are we) by you, O Brahman, by telling the meritorious story.)
O Brahman, this is our doubt, which has arisen from ancient knowledge; please tell us, O one of excellent mind, that which was created by great persons. Indeed, we have been purified by you, O Brahman, through your narration of the meritorious story. (12-335-6)

कथयिष्यामि ते सर्वं पुराणं वेदसंमितम्। जगौ यद्भगवान्व्यासो राज्ञो धर्मसुतस्य वै ॥१२-३३५-७॥
kathayiṣyāmi te sarvaṃ purāṇaṃ vedasaṃmitam। jagau yadbhagavānvyāso rājño dharmasutasya vai ॥12-335-7॥
[कथयिष्यामि (kathayiṣyāmi) - I shall narrate; ते (te) - to you; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; पुराणं (purāṇam) - ancient lore; वेदसंमितम् (vedasaṃmitam) - measured by the Veda; जगौ (jagau) - sang; यत् (yat) - which; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - to the king; धर्मसुतस्य (dharmasutasya) - of the son of Dharma; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(I shall narrate to you all the ancient lore measured by the Veda, which the venerable Vyāsa indeed sang to the king, the son of Dharma.)
I will tell you the entire ancient story, in accordance with the Veda, which the revered Vyāsa once recited to the king, the son of Dharma. (12-335-7)
श्रुत्वाश्वशिरसो मूर्तिं देवस्य हरिमेधसः। उत्पन्नसंशयो राजा तमेव समचोदयत् ॥१२-३३५-८॥
śrutvāśvaśiraso mūrtiṃ devasya harimedhasaḥ। utpannasaṃśayo rājā tameva samacodayat ॥12-335-8॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; अश्वशिरसो (aśvaśiraso) - of Aśvaśiras (the horse-headed one); मूर्तिं (mūrtiṃ) - form; देवस्य (devasya) - of the god; हरिमेधसः (harimedhasaḥ) - of Harimedhas (the wise Hari); उत्पन्न (utpanna) - arisen; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; राजा (rājā) - the king; तम् (tam) - him; एव (eva) - indeed; समचोदयत् (samacodayat) - urged;]

yattad darśitavān brahmā devaṃ hayaśirodharam। kimarthaṃ tat samabhavad vapur devopakalpitam ॥12-335-9॥

यत्किञ्चिदिह लोके वै देहबद्धं विशां पते। सर्वं पञ्चभिराविष्टं भूतैरीश्वरबुद्धिजैः ॥१२-३३५-१०॥
yatkiñcid iha loke vai dehabaddhaṃ viśāṃ pate। sarvaṃ pañcabhir āviṣṭaṃ bhūtair īśvarabuddhijaiḥ ॥12-335-10॥
[यत् (yat) - whatever; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; इह (iha) - here; लोके (loke) - in the world; वै (vai) - indeed; देहबद्धं (dehabaddhaṃ) - bound to the body; विशां (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; पञ्चभिः (pañcabhiḥ) - by the five; आविष्टं (āviṣṭaṃ) - pervaded; भूतैः (bhūtaiḥ) - by the elements; ईश्वरबुद्धिजैः (īśvarabuddhijaiḥ) - arisen from the intellect of the Lord;]
(Whatever anything here in the world indeed bound to the body, O lord of men, all is pervaded by the five elements arisen from the intellect of the Lord.)

ईश्वरो हि जगत्स्रष्टा प्रभुर्नारायणो विराट्। भूतान्तरात्मा वरदः सगुणो निर्गुणोऽपि च ॥ भूतप्रलयमव्यक्तं शृणुष्व नृपसत्तम ॥१२-३३५-११॥
īśvaro hi jagatsraṣṭā prabhur nārāyaṇo virāṭ। bhūtāntarātmā varadaḥ saguṇo nirguṇo'pi ca ॥ bhūtapralayamavyaktaṃ śṛṇuṣva nṛpasattama ॥12-335-11॥

Indeed, the lord, the creator of the world, the master, Nārāyaṇa, the cosmic form, the inner self of beings, the bestower of boons, is both with qualities and without qualities. Hear about the dissolution of beings and the unmanifest, O best of kings. (12-335-11)
धरण्यामथ लीनायामप्सु चैकार्णवे पुरा। ज्योतिर्भूते जले चापि लीने ज्योतिषि चानिले ॥१२-३३५-१२॥
dharaṇyām atha līnāyām apsu ca ekārṇave purā। jyotirbhūte jale ca api līne jyotiṣi ca anile ॥12-335-12॥
[धरण्याम् (dharaṇyām) - in the earth; अथ (atha) - then; लीनायाम् (līnāyām) - having merged; अप्सु (apsu) - in the waters; च (ca) - and; एकार्णवे (ekārṇave) - in the one ocean; पुरा (purā) - formerly; ज्योतिर्भूते (jyotirbhūte) - having become light; जले (jale) - in water; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; लीने (līne) - having merged; ज्योतिषि (jyotiṣi) - in light; च (ca) - and; अनिले (anile) - in air;]
(In the earth then having merged, in the waters and in the one ocean formerly; having become light, in water and also having merged in light and in air.)
Then, when the earth had merged, formerly in the waters and in the single ocean; when it had become light, it merged in water, and then in light and in air. (12-335-12)
वायौ चाकाशसंलीने आकाशे च मनोनुगे। व्यक्ते मनसि संलीने व्यक्ते चाव्यक्ततां गते ॥१२-३३५-१३॥
vāyau cākāśasaṁlīne ākāśe ca manonuge। vyakte manasi saṁlīne vyakte cāvyaktatāṁ gate ॥12-335-13॥
[वायौ (vāyau) - in air; च (ca) - and; आकाशसंलीने (ākāśasaṁlīne) - merged in space; आकाशे (ākāśe) - in space; च (ca) - and; मनोनुगे (manonuge) - following the mind; व्यक्ते (vyakte) - in the manifest; मनसि (manasi) - in the mind; संलीने (saṁlīne) - merged; व्यक्ते (vyakte) - in the manifest; च (ca) - and; अव्यक्ततां (avyaktatāṁ) - to unmanifestness; गते (gate) - having gone;]
(In air and merged in space, in space and following the mind; in the manifest, the mind being merged, and in the manifest, having gone to unmanifestness. (12-335-13))
When air is merged into space, and space is merged following the mind; when the mind is merged in the manifest, and the manifest has attained the state of the unmanifest. (12-335-13)
अव्यक्ते पुरुषं याते पुंसि सर्वगतेऽपि च। तम एवाभवत्सर्वं न प्राज्ञायत किञ्चन ॥१२-३३५-१४॥
avyakte puruṣaṃ yāte puṃsi sarvagate'pi ca। tam evābhavatsarvaṃ na prājñāyata kiñcana ॥12-335-14॥
[अव्यक्ते (avyakte) - in the unmanifest; पुरुषं (puruṣam) - the person; याते (yāte) - having gone; पुंसि (puṃsi) - in the being; सर्वगते (sarvagate) - all-pervading; अपि (api) - even; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - him; एव (eva) - indeed; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; न (na) - not; प्राज्ञायत (prājñāyata) - was known; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything;]
(In the unmanifest, when the person had gone, in the all-pervading being even, him indeed became all; not was known anything.)
When the person entered the unmanifest, even in the all-pervading being, he alone became everything; nothing whatsoever was known. (12-335-14)
तमसो ब्रह्म सम्भूतं तमोमूलमृतात्मकम्। तद्विश्वभावसञ्ज्ञान्तं पौरुषीं तनुमास्थितम् ॥१२-३३५-१५॥
tamaso brahma sambhūtaṃ tamomūlamṛtātmakam। tadviśvabhāvasañjñāntaṃ pauruṣīṃ tanumāsthitam ॥12-335-15॥
[तमसो (tamaso) - of darkness; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; सम्भूतं (sambhūtaṃ) - arisen; तमोमूलम् (tamomūlam) - having darkness as root; ऋतात्मकम् (ṛtātmakam) - having truth as essence; तत् (tat) - that; विश्वभावसञ्ज्ञान्तम् (viśvabhāvasañjñāntam) - ending with the designation of the nature of the universe; पौरुषीं (pauruṣīṃ) - masculine; तनुम् (tanum) - body; आस्थितम् (āsthitam) - assumed;]
(Of darkness Brahman arisen, having darkness as root, having truth as essence; that, ending with the designation of the nature of the universe, masculine body assumed.)
Brahman, arisen from darkness, whose root is darkness and whose essence is truth, that which ends with the designation of the nature of the universe, has assumed a masculine form. (12-335-15)
सोऽनिरुद्ध इति प्रोक्तस्तत्प्रधानं प्रचक्षते। तदव्यक्तमिति ज्ञेयं त्रिगुणं नृपसत्तम ॥१२-३३५-१६॥
so'niruddha iti proktas tat-pradhānaṃ pracakṣate। tad-avyaktam iti jñeyaṃ triguṇaṃ nṛpasattama ॥12-335-16॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अनिरुद्ध (aniruddha) - unobstructed; इति (iti) - thus; प्रोक्तः (proktaḥ) - is said; तत् (tat) - that; प्रधानम् (pradhānam) - primordial matter; प्रचक्षते (pracakṣate) - they declare; तत् (tat) - that; अव्यक्तम् (avyaktam) - unmanifest; इति (iti) - thus; ज्ञेयम् (jñeyam) - to be known; त्रिगुणम् (triguṇam) - threefold in qualities; नृपसत्तम (nṛpasattama) - O best of kings;]
(He unobstructed thus is said; that primordial matter they declare; that unmanifest thus to be known; threefold in qualities O best of kings;)
He is called 'Aniruddha'; that is declared to be the primordial matter. That unmanifest is to be known as threefold in qualities, O best of kings. (12-335-16)
विद्यासहायवान्देवो विष्वक्सेनो हरिः प्रभुः। अप्स्वेव शयनं चक्रे निद्रायोगमुपागतः ॥ जगतश्चिन्तयन्सृष्टिं चित्रां बहुगुणोद्भवाम् ॥१२-३३५-१७॥
vidyāsahāyavān devo viṣvakseno hariḥ prabhuḥ। apsveva śayanaṃ cakre nidrāyogamupāgataḥ ॥ jagataś cintayan sṛṣṭiṃ citrāṃ bahuguṇodbhavām ॥12-335-17॥
[विद्या (vidyā) - knowledge; सहायवान् (sahāyavān) - possessed of assistance; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; विष्वक्सेनः (viṣvaksenaḥ) - Viṣvaksena (epithet of Viṣṇu); हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari (Viṣṇu); प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; अप्सु (apsu) - in the waters; एव (eva) - indeed; शयनम् (śayanam) - bed; चक्रे (cakre) - made; निद्रायोगम् (nidrāyogam) - union with sleep; उपागतः (upāgataḥ) - having approached; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - contemplating; सृष्टिम् (sṛṣṭim) - creation; चित्राम् (citrām) - variegated; बहुगुणोद्भवाम् (bahuguṇodbhavām) - arising from many qualities;]
(The god Viṣvaksena Hari, possessed of the help of knowledge, the lord, indeed made a bed in the waters, having approached union with sleep, contemplating the creation of the world, variegated, arising from many qualities.)
The god Viṣvaksena, Hari, the lord endowed with the aid of knowledge, made his bed in the waters, entering into the state of sleep, while contemplating the creation of the world, which is diverse and arises from many qualities. (12-335-17)
तस्य चिन्तयतः सृष्टिं महानात्मगुणः स्मृतः। अहङ्कारस्ततो जातो ब्रह्मा शुभचतुर्मुखः ॥ हिरण्यगर्भो भगवान्सर्वलोकपितामहः ॥१२-३३५-१८॥
tasya cintayataḥ sṛṣṭiṃ mahān ātmaguṇaḥ smṛtaḥ। ahaṅkāras tato jāto brahmā śubhacaturmukhaḥ॥ hiraṇyagarbho bhagavān sarvalokapitāmahaḥ॥12-335-18॥

ददृशेऽद्भुतसङ्काशे लोकानापोमयान्प्रभुः। सत्त्वस्थः परमेष्ठी स ततो भूतगणान्सृजत् ॥१२-३३५-२०॥
dadṛśe-'dbhuta-saṅkāśe lokān āpomayān prabhuḥ। sattvasthaḥ parameṣṭhī sa tato bhūtagarān sṛjat ॥12-335-20॥

पूर्वमेव च पद्मस्य पत्रे सूर्यांशुसप्रभे। नारायणकृतौ बिन्दू अपामास्तां गुणोत्तरौ ॥१२-३३५-२१॥

(Before indeed and on the lotus's leaf shining with the radiance of sun-rays, created by Nārāyaṇa, drops of water existed, superior in quality.)
Earlier, on the lotus leaf shining with the brilliance of sun-rays, which was created by Nārāyaṇa, there existed drops of water that were of excellent quality. (12-335-21)
तावपश्यत्स भगवाननादिनिधनोऽच्युतः। एकस्तत्राभवद्बिन्दुर्मध्वाभो रुचिरप्रभः ॥१२-३३५-२२॥
tāvapaśyatsa bhagavān anādinidhano'cyutaḥ। ekas tatrābhavad bindur madhvābho ruciraprabhaḥ ॥12-335-22॥

स तामसो मधुर्जातस्तदा नारायणाज्ञया। कठिनस्त्वपरो बिन्दुः कैटभो राजसस्तु सः ॥१२-३३५-२३॥
sa tāmaso madhurjātastadā nārāyaṇājñayā। kaṭhinastvaparo binduḥ kaiṭabho rājasastu saḥ ॥12-335-23॥

(Those two, the best, endowed with the qualities of darkness and passion, strong, with maces in hand, following the lotus stalk, ran towards.)
Those two excellent ones, endowed with the qualities of darkness and passion, strong and holding maces in their hands, followed the lotus stalk and rushed forward. (12-335-24)
ददृशातेऽरविन्दस्थं ब्रह्माणममितप्रभम्। सृजन्तं प्रथमं वेदांश्चतुरश्चारुविग्रहान् ॥१२-३३५-२५॥
dadṛśāte'ravindasthaṃ brahmāṇam amitaprabham। sṛjantaṃ prathamaṃ vedāṃś caturaś cāruvigrahān ॥12-335-25॥

ततो विग्रहवन्तौ तौ वेदान्दृष्ट्वासुरोत्तमौ। सहसा जगृहतुर्वेदान्ब्रह्मणः पश्यतस्तदा ॥१२-३३५-२६॥

(Then those two best among Dānavas, having taken the eternal Vedas, quickly entered Rasā towards the east into the great ocean.)

ततो हृतेषु वेदेषु ब्रह्मा कश्मलमाविशत्। ततो वचनमीशानं प्राह वेदैर्विनाकृतः ॥१२-३३५-२८॥
tato hṛteṣu vedeṣu brahmā kaśmalam āviśat। tato vacanam īśānaṃ prāha vedair vinākṛtaḥ ॥12-335-28॥

(Then, when the Vedas had been taken away, Brahmā was overcome by confusion. Then, deprived of the Vedas, he spoke words to the Lord. (12-335-28))

वेदा मे परमं चक्षुर्वेदा मे परमं बलम्। वेदा मे परमं धाम वेदा मे ब्रह्म चोत्तमम् ॥१२-३३५-२९॥

The Vedas are to me the supreme eye, the supreme strength, the supreme abode, and the Vedas are to me Brahman and the highest. (12-335-29)
मम वेदा हृताः सर्वे दानवाभ्यां बलादितः। अन्धकारा हि मे लोका जाता वेदैर्विनाकृताः ॥ वेदानृते हि किं कुर्यां लोकान्वै स्रष्टुमुद्यतः ॥१२-३३५-३०॥
mama vedā hṛtāḥ sarve dānavābhyāṃ balāditaḥ। andhakārā hi me lokā jātā vedairvinākṛtāḥ ॥ vedānṛte hi kiṃ kuryāṃ lokān vai sraṣṭumudyataḥ ॥12-335-30॥

(My Vedas have been taken away, all, by the two Dānavas by force from here. Indeed, my worlds have become dark, made without the Vedas. Indeed, without the Vedas, what could I do, endeavoring to create the worlds?)
All my Vedas have been forcibly taken away from here by the two Dānavas. As a result, my worlds have become dark, being deprived of the Vedas. Indeed, without the Vedas, what could I possibly do as I attempt to create the worlds? (12-335-30)
अहो बत महद्दुःखं वेदनाशनजं मम। प्राप्तं दुनोति हृदयं तीव्रशोकाय रन्धयन् ॥१२-३३५-३१॥
aho bata mahadduḥkhaṃ vedanāśanajaṃ mama। prāptaṃ dunoti hṛdayaṃ tīvraśokāya randhayan ॥12-335-31॥
[अहो (aho) - alas; बत (bata) - indeed; महद्दुःखं (mahadduḥkhaṃ) - great suffering; वेदनाशनजं (vedanāśanajaṃ) - born from the destruction of feeling; मम (mama) - my; प्राप्तं (prāptaṃ) - has come; दुनोति (dunoti) - afflicts; हृदयं (hṛdayaṃ) - the heart; तीव्रशोकाय (tīvraśokāya) - for intense grief; रन्धयन् (randhayan) - piercing;]
(Alas, indeed, great suffering born from the destruction of feeling, my, has come, afflicts the heart, for intense grief, piercing.)

को हि शोकार्णवे मग्नं मामितोऽद्य समुद्धरेत्। वेदांस्तानानयेन्नष्टान्कस्य चाहं प्रियो भवे ॥१२-३३५-३२॥
ko hi śokārṇave magnaṃ mām ito'dya samuddharet। vedāṃs tān anayen naṣṭān kasya cāhaṃ priyo bhave ॥12-335-32॥
[को (ko) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; शोकार्णवे (śokārṇave) - in the ocean of sorrow; मग्नं (magnaṃ) - immersed; माम् (mām) - me; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; अद्य (adya) - today; समुद्धरेत् (samuddharet) - would lift up; वेदान् (vedān) - the Vedas; तान् (tān) - those; आनयेत् (ānayet) - would bring; नष्टान् (naṣṭān) - lost; कस्य (kasya) - of whom; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; भवे (bhave) - would become;]
(Who indeed in the ocean of sorrow immersed me from here today would lift up? The Vedas those would bring lost, of whom and I dear would become. (12-335-32))
Who indeed could lift me, immersed in the ocean of sorrow, out from here today? Who would bring back those lost Vedas, and to whom would I become dear? (12-335-32)
इत्येवं भाषमाणस्य ब्रह्मणो नृपसत्तम। हरेः स्तोत्रार्थमुद्भूता बुद्धिर्बुद्धिमतां वर ॥ ततो जगौ परं जप्यं साञ्जलिप्रग्रहः प्रभुः ॥१२-३३५-३३॥
ityevaṃ bhāṣamāṇasya brahmaṇo nṛpasattama। hareḥ stotrārthamudbhūtā buddhirbuddhimatāṃ vara ॥ tato jagau paraṃ japyaṃ sāñjalipragrahaḥ prabhuḥ ॥12-335-33॥

(Thus, in this manner, as Brahmā was speaking, O best of kings, for the purpose of praising Hari, intellect arisen, the best of the wise; then the lord, with joined palms, sang the supreme recitation.)
Thus, as Brahmā was speaking in this way, O best of kings, the intellect for praising Hari arose in the best of the wise; then the lord, with joined palms, sang the supreme hymn. (12-335-33)
नमस्ते ब्रह्महृदय नमस्ते मम पूर्वज। लोकाद्य भुवनश्रेष्ठ साङ्ख्ययोगनिधे विभो ॥१२-३३५-३४॥
namaste brahmahṛdaya namaste mama pūrvaja। lokādya bhuvanaśreṣṭha sāṅkhyayoganidhe vibho ॥12-335-34॥

व्यक्ताव्यक्तकराचिन्त्य क्षेमं पन्थानमास्थित। विश्वभुक्सर्वभूतानामन्तरात्मन्नयोनिज ॥१२-३३५-३५॥
vyaktāvyaktakarācintya kṣemaṃ panthānamāsthita। viśvabhuksarvabhūtānāmantarātmannayonija ॥12-335-35॥
[व्यक्त (vyakta) - manifest; अव्यक्त (avyakta) - unmanifest; कर (kara) - maker; अचिन्त्य (acintya) - inconceivable; क्षेमं (kṣemam) - welfare; पन्थानम् (panthānam) - path; आस्थित (āsthita) - having taken; विश्वभुक् (viśvabhuk) - eater of all; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; अन्तरात्मन् (antarātman) - inner self; अयोनिज (ayonija) - not born from a womb;]
(Manifest unmanifest maker inconceivable welfare path having taken eater of all of all beings inner self not born from a womb.)
The inner self, not born from a womb, who is the eater of all, the inner soul of all beings, has taken the path of welfare that is inconceivable, made by the manifest and unmanifest. (12-335-35)
अहं प्रसादजस्तुभ्यं लोकधाम्ने स्वयम्भुवे। त्वत्तो मे मानसं जन्म प्रथमं द्विजपूजितम् ॥१२-३३५-३६॥
ahaṃ prasādajastubhyaṃ lokadhāmne svayambhuve। tvatto me mānasaṃ janma prathamaṃ dvijapūjitam ॥12-335-36॥

चाक्षुषं वै द्वितीयं मे जन्म चासीत्पुरातनम्। त्वत्प्रसादाच्च मे जन्म तृतीयं वाचिकं महत् ॥१२-३३५-३७॥

अण्डजं चापि मे जन्म त्वत्तः षष्ठं विनिर्मितम्। इदं च सप्तमं जन्म पद्मजं मेऽमितप्रभ ॥१२-३३५-३९॥

त्वमीश्वरस्वभावश्च स्वयम्भूः पुरुषोत्तमः। त्वया विनिर्मितोऽहं वै वेदचक्षुर्वयोतिगः ॥१२-३३५-४१॥
tvam īśvarasvabhāvaś ca svayambhūḥ puruṣottamaḥ। tvayā vinirmito'ham vai vedacakṣur vayotigaḥ ॥12-335-41॥

ते मे वेदा हृताश्चक्षुरन्धो जातोऽस्मि जागृहि। ददस्व चक्षुषी मह्यं प्रियोऽहं ते प्रियोऽसि मे ॥१२-३३५-४२॥
te me vedā hṛtāś cakṣur-andho jāto'smi jāgṛhi। dadasva cakṣuṣī mahyaṃ priyo'haṃ te priyo'si me ॥12-335-42॥

(Those my Vedas taken away, eye-blind become I am, awaken. Give eyes to me. Dear I am to you, dear you are to me. (12-335-42))

सुनासिकेन कायेन भूत्वा चन्द्रप्रभस्तदा। कृत्वा हयशिरः शुभ्रं वेदानामालयं प्रभुः ॥१२-३३५-४४॥
sunāsikena kāyena bhūtvā candraprabhastadā। kṛtvā hayaśiraḥ śubhraṃ vedānāmālayaṃ prabhuḥ ॥12-335-44॥

(With a beautiful nose, with body, having become, Chandraprabha then, having made, Hayashira (horse-headed), pure, of the Vedas, abode, the Lord.)

तस्य मूर्धा समभवद्द्यौः सनक्षत्रतारका। केशाश्चास्याभवन्दीर्घा रवेरंशुसमप्रभाः ॥१२-३३५-४५॥
tasya mūrdhā samabhavad dyauḥ sa-nakṣatra-tārakā। keśāś ca asya abhavan dīrghāḥ raver aṃśu-sama-prabhāḥ ॥12-335-45॥

(Ear, sky, in the netherworld, forehead, she who holds beings; Gaṅgā, Sarasvatī, meritorious, eyebrows, let there be, great river. (12-335-46))
Let the great river Gaṅgā, the meritorious Sarasvatī, who holds beings, be present at the ears, in the sky, in the netherworld, on the forehead, and at the eyebrows. (12-335-46)
चक्षुषी सोमसूर्यौ ते नासा सन्ध्या पुनः स्मृता। ओङ्कारस्त्वथ संस्कारो विद्युज्जिह्वा च निर्मिता ॥१२-३३५-४७॥

(Eyes (are) Soma and Sūrya, your nose (is) Sandhyā again considered. Oṅkāra then purification, having a tongue of lightning and is made. (12-335-47))

दन्ताश्च पितरो राजन्सोमपा इति विश्रुताः। गोलोको ब्रह्मलोकश्च ओष्ठावास्तां महात्मनः ॥ ग्रीवा चास्याभवद्राजन्कालरात्रिर्गुणोत्तरा ॥१२-३३५-४८॥
dantāś ca pitaro rājan somapā iti viśrutāḥ। goloko brahmalokaś ca oṣṭhāv āstāṃ mahātmanaḥ॥ grīvā cāsyābhavad rājan kālarātrir guṇottarā॥12-335-48॥

(Teeth and the ancestors, O king, are well-known as drinkers of Soma; Goloka and Brahmaloka became the two lips of the great-souled one. The neck of him, O king, became Kālarātrī, excelling in qualities. (12-335-48))

tatastāvasurau kṛtvā vedānsamayabandhanān। rasātale vinikṣipya yataḥ śabdastato drutau ॥12-335-52॥

(In this interval, O king, the god, the horse-headed one, Hari, seized all the Vedas that had gone to Rasātala; and gave (them) again to Brahmā; then went to his own nature. (12-335-53))

स्थापयित्वा हयशिर उदक्पूर्वे महोदधौ। वेदानामालयश्चापि बभूवाश्वशिरास्ततः ॥१२-३३५-५४॥

तत उत्तममास्थाय वेगं बलवतां वरौ। पुनरुत्तस्थतुः शीघ्रं रसानामालयात्तदा ॥ ददृशाते च पुरुषं तमेवादिकरं प्रभुम् ॥१२-३३५-५६॥

(Then, having assumed excellent speed, the two best of the strong again rose up quickly from the abode of the juices then. And they saw the man, him indeed, the prime doer, the lord.)

ऊचतुश्च समाविष्टौ रजसा तमसा च तौ। अयं स पुरुषः श्वेतः शेते निद्रामुपागतः ॥१२-३३५-६०॥

(By this, certainly, of the Vedas, the taking away has been done from the netherworld. Whose is this, who indeed truly is this, and what does the enjoyer sleep?)

इत्युच्चारितवाक्यौ तौ बोधयामासतुर्हरिम्। युद्धार्थिनौ तु विज्ञाय विबुद्धः पुरुषोत्तमः ॥१२-३३५-६२॥
ity uccāritavākyau tau bodhayāmāsatur harim। yuddhārthinau tu vijñāya vibuddhaḥ puruṣottamaḥ ॥12-335-62॥

निरीक्ष्य चासुरेन्द्रौ तौ ततो युद्धे मनो दधे। अथ युद्धं समभवत्तयोर्नारायणस्य च ॥१२-३३५-६३॥

(With bodies pervaded by passion and darkness, those two, Madhu and Kaiṭabha, both, causing affliction to Brahmā, Madhusūdana killed.)

(Then, surrounded, Brahmā, the slayer of enemies, honored by the Veda, created at that time all the worlds, both immovable and moving.)
Then Brahmā, honored by the Veda and the destroyer of enemies, surrounded by all, created at that time all the worlds, both stationary and moving. (12-335-66)
दत्त्वा पितामहायाग्र्यां बुद्धिं लोकविसर्गिकीम्। तत्रैवान्तर्दधे देवो यत एवागतो हरिः ॥१२-३३५-६७॥
dattvā pitāmahāyāgryāṃ buddhiṃ lokavisargikīm। tatraivāntardadhe devo yata evāgato hariḥ ॥12-335-67॥
[दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; पितामहायाग्र्यां (pitāmahāyāgryām) - to the supreme sacrifice of the Grandfather (Brahmā); बुद्धिं (buddhiṃ) - intellect; लोकविसर्गिकीम् (lokavisargikīm) - related to the creation of the worlds; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - right there; अन्तर्दधे (antardadhe) - disappeared; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; यत (yata) - from where; एव (eva) - indeed; आगतः (āgataḥ) - had come; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari (Viṣṇu);]
(Having given to the supreme sacrifice of the Grandfather the intellect related to the creation of the worlds, right there the god disappeared from where indeed he had come, Hari.)
After imparting to the supreme sacrifice of the Grandfather the intellect concerning the creation of the worlds, the god Hari disappeared right there, returning to the place from which he had come. (12-335-67)
तौ दानवौ हरिर्हत्वा कृत्वा हयशिरस्तनुम्। पुनः प्रवृत्तिधर्मार्थं तामेव विदधे तनुम् ॥१२-३३५-६८॥
tau dānavau harirhatvā kṛtvā hayaśirastanum। punaḥ pravṛttidharmārthaṃ tāmeva vidadhe tanum ॥12-335-68॥

(Those two demons Hari having slain, having made a horse-headed body; again for the sake of pravṛtti-dharma that indeed he created (the) body.)

एवमेष महाभागो बभूवाश्वशिरा हरिः। पौराणमेतदाख्यातं रूपं वरदमैश्वरम् ॥१२-३३५-६९॥
evameṣa mahābhāgo babhūvāśvaśirā hariḥ। paurāṇametadākhyātaṃ rūpaṃ varadamaiśvaram ॥12-335-69॥

यो ह्येतद्ब्राह्मणो नित्यं शृणुयाद्धारयेत वा। न तस्याध्ययनं नाशमुपगच्छेत्कदाचन ॥१२-३३५-७०॥
yo hy etad brāhmaṇo nityaṃ śṛṇuyād dhārayeta vā। na tasya adhyayanaṃ nāśam upagacchet kadācana ॥12-335-70॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; शृणुयात् (śṛṇuyāt) - should hear; धारयेत् (dhārayet) - should retain; वा (vā) - or; न (na) - not; तस्य (tasya) - his; अध्ययनम् (adhyayanaṃ) - study; नाशम् (nāśam) - destruction; उपगच्छेत् (upagacchet) - should attain; कदाचन (kadācana) - ever;]
(Who indeed this brāhmaṇa always should hear, should retain or, not his study destruction should attain ever.)
Whoever is the brāhmaṇa that always hears or retains this, his study will never be destroyed at any time. (12-335-70)
आराध्य तपसोग्रेण देवं हयशिरोधरम्। पाञ्चालेन क्रमः प्राप्तो रामेण पथि देशिते ॥१२-३३५-७१॥
ārādhya tapasogreṇa devaṃ hayaśirodharam। pāñcālena kramaḥ prāpto rāmeṇa pathi deśite ॥12-335-71॥

यां यामिच्छेत्तनुं देवः कर्तुं कार्यविधौ क्वचित्। तां तां कुर्याद्विकुर्वाणः स्वयमात्मानमात्मना ॥१२-३३५-७३॥
yāṃ yām icchet tanum devaḥ kartuṃ kāryavidhau kvacit। tāṃ tāṃ kuryād vikurvāṇaḥ svayam ātmānam ātmanā ॥12-335-73॥

नारायणपरा वेदा यज्ञा नारायणात्मकाः। तपो नारायणपरं नारायणपरा गतिः ॥१२-३३५-७५॥
nārāyaṇaparā vedā yajñā nārāyaṇātmakaḥ। tapo nārāyaṇaparaṃ nārāyaṇaparā gatiḥ ॥12-335-75॥

नारायणपरं सत्यमृतं नारायणात्मकम्। नारायणपरो धर्मः पुनरावृत्तिदुर्लभः ॥१२-३३५-७६॥
nārāyaṇaparaṃ satyamṛtaṃ nārāyaṇātmakam। nārāyaṇaparo dharmaḥ punarāvṛttidurlabhaḥ ॥12-335-76॥
[नारायणपरम् (nārāyaṇaparam) - supreme as Nārāyaṇa; सत्य (satya) - truth; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - immortal; नारायणात्मकम् (nārāyaṇātmakam) - having the nature of Nārāyaṇa; नारायणपरः (nārāyaṇaparaḥ) - devoted to Nārāyaṇa; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; पुनरावृत्तिदुर्लभः (punarāvṛttidurlabhaḥ) - difficult to attain rebirth;]
(Supreme as Nārāyaṇa, truth, immortal, having the nature of Nārāyaṇa. Devoted to Nārāyaṇa, righteousness, difficult to attain rebirth. (12-335-76))
The supreme truth is Nārāyaṇa, who is immortal and of the nature of Nārāyaṇa. Righteousness devoted to Nārāyaṇa makes rebirth difficult to attain. (12-335-76)
प्रवृत्तिलक्षणश्चैव धर्मो नारायणात्मकः। नारायणात्मको गन्धो भूमौ श्रेष्ठतमः स्मृतः ॥१२-३३५-७७॥
pravṛttilakṣaṇaścaiva dharmo nārāyaṇātmakaḥ। nārāyaṇātmako gandho bhūmau śreṣṭhatamaḥ smṛtaḥ ॥12-335-77॥
[प्रवृत्ति (pravṛtti) - activity; लक्षणः (lakṣaṇaḥ) - characteristic; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; नारायणात्मकः (nārāyaṇātmakaḥ) - of the nature of Nārāyaṇa; नारायणात्मकः (nārāyaṇātmakaḥ) - of the nature of Nārāyaṇa; गन्धः (gandhaḥ) - fragrance; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on earth; श्रेष्ठतमः (śreṣṭhatamaḥ) - the most excellent; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is remembered;]
(Activity characteristic and indeed dharma of the nature of Nārāyaṇa; of the nature of Nārāyaṇa fragrance on earth the most excellent is remembered. (12-335-77))
The characteristic of activity and indeed dharma are of the nature of Nārāyaṇa; the fragrance that is of the nature of Nārāyaṇa is remembered as the most excellent on earth. (12-335-77)
अपां चैव गुणो राजन्रसो नारायणात्मकः। ज्योतिषां च गुणो रूपं स्मृतं नारायणात्मकम् ॥१२-३३५-७८॥
apāṃ caiva guṇo rājan raso nārāyaṇātmakaḥ। jyotiṣāṃ ca guṇo rūpaṃ smṛtaṃ nārāyaṇātmakam ॥12-335-78॥
[अपां (apāṃ) - of waters; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गुणः (guṇaḥ) - quality; राजन् (rājan) - O king; रसः (rasaḥ) - essence; नारायणात्मकः (nārāyaṇātmakaḥ) - of the nature of Nārāyaṇa; ज्योतिषां (jyotiṣām) - of luminaries; च (ca) - and; गुणः (guṇaḥ) - quality; रूपं (rūpaṃ) - form; स्मृतं (smṛtam) - is remembered; नारायणात्मकम् (nārāyaṇātmakam) - of the nature of Nārāyaṇa;]
(Of waters and indeed the quality, O king, is essence, of the nature of Nārāyaṇa; of luminaries also the quality, form, is remembered, of the nature of Nārāyaṇa. (12-335-78))
O king, the quality of waters is essence, which is of the nature of Nārāyaṇa; and the quality of luminaries, which is form, is also remembered as of the nature of Nārāyaṇa. (12-335-78)
नारायणात्मकश्चापि स्पर्शो वायुगुणः स्मृतः। नारायणात्मकश्चापि शब्द आकाशसम्भवः ॥१२-३३५-७९॥

(Having the nature of Nārāyaṇa and also touch, attribute of wind, is remembered. Having the nature of Nārāyaṇa and also sound, originating from space. (12-335-79))
Touch, which is the attribute of wind, is also considered to have the nature of Nārāyaṇa. Likewise, sound, which originates from space, is also of the nature of Nārāyaṇa. (12-335-79)
मनश्चापि ततो भूतमव्यक्तगुणलक्षणम्। नारायणपरः कालो ज्योतिषामयनं च यत् ॥१२-३३५-८०॥
manaś cāpi tato bhūtam avyaktaguṇalakṣaṇam। nārāyaṇaparaḥ kālo jyotiṣām ayanaṃ ca yat ॥12-335-80॥
[मनः (manaḥ) - mind; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; ततः (tataḥ) - from that; भूतम् (bhūtam) - element; अव्यक्तगुणलक्षणम् (avyaktaguṇalakṣaṇam) - having the characteristics of the qualities of the unmanifest; नारायणपरः (nārāyaṇaparaḥ) - devoted to Nārāyaṇa; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; ज्योतिषाम् (jyotiṣām) - of the luminaries; अयनम् (ayanam) - course; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which;]
(mind and also from that element having the characteristics of the qualities of the unmanifest; devoted to Nārāyaṇa time; of the luminaries course and which;)
The mind also, from that element characterized by the qualities of the unmanifest, time devoted to Nārāyaṇa, and the course of the luminaries, and that which (is so). (12-335-80)
नारायणपरा कीर्तिः श्रीश्च लक्ष्मीश्च देवताः। नारायणपरं साङ्ख्यं योगो नारायणात्मकः ॥१२-३३५-८१॥
nārāyaṇaparā kīrtiḥ śrīś ca lakṣmīś ca devatāḥ। nārāyaṇaparaṃ sāṅkhyaṃ yogo nārāyaṇātmakaḥ ॥12-335-81॥
[नारायणपरा (nārāyaṇaparā) - having Nārāyaṇa as the highest; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; श्रीः (śrīḥ) - prosperity; च (ca) - and; लक्ष्मीः (lakṣmīḥ) - Lakṣmī; च (ca) - and; देवताः (devatāḥ) - deities; नारायणपरं (nārāyaṇaparaṃ) - having Nārāyaṇa as the supreme; साङ्ख्यं (sāṅkhyaṃ) - Sāṅkhya (philosophy); योगः (yogaḥ) - Yoga; नारायणात्मकः (nārāyaṇātmakaḥ) - having the nature of Nārāyaṇa;]
(Fame having Nārāyaṇa as the highest; prosperity and Lakṣmī and deities. Sāṅkhya having Nārāyaṇa as the supreme; Yoga having the nature of Nārāyaṇa. (12-335-81))
Fame is centered on Nārāyaṇa; prosperity, Lakṣmī, and the deities are devoted to him. The Sāṅkhya philosophy regards Nārāyaṇa as supreme, and Yoga is of the nature of Nārāyaṇa. (12-335-81)
कारणं पुरुषो येषां प्रधानं चापि कारणम्। स्वभावश्चैव कर्माणि दैवं येषां च कारणम् ॥१२-३३५-८२॥
kāraṇaṃ puruṣo yeṣāṃ pradhānaṃ cāpi kāraṇam। svabhāvaścaiva karmāṇi daivaṃ yeṣāṃ ca kāraṇam ॥12-335-82॥
[कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - person; येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; प्रधानम् (pradhānam) - primordial matter; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause; स्वभावः (svabhāvaḥ) - own nature; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; दैवम् (daivam) - divine (fate); येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; च (ca) - and; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause;]
(Cause person of whom, primordial matter and also cause; own nature and indeed actions, divine (fate) of whom and cause.)
For those for whom the person is the cause, and primordial matter is also the cause; for whom their own nature, actions, and fate are the cause. (12-335-82)
पञ्चकारणसङ्ख्यातो निष्ठा सर्वत्र वै हरिः। तत्त्वं जिज्ञासमानानां हेतुभिः सर्वतोमुखैः ॥१२-३३५-८३॥
pañcakāraṇasaṅkhyāto niṣṭhā sarvatra vai hariḥ। tattvaṃ jijñāsamānānāṃ hetubhiḥ sarvatomukhaiḥ ॥12-335-83॥
[पञ्च (pañca) - five; कारण (kāraṇa) - causes; सङ्ख्यातः (saṅkhyātaḥ) - enumerated; निष्ठा (niṣṭhā) - abiding; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; वै (vai) - indeed; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; तत्त्वं (tattvaṃ) - principle; जिज्ञासमानानां (jijñāsamānānāṃ) - of those who are inquiring; हेतुभिः (hetubhiḥ) - by causes; सर्वतोमुखैः (sarvatomukhaiḥ) - from all directions;]
(Five causes enumerated, abiding everywhere indeed is Hari; the principle for those who are inquiring, by causes from all directions. (12-335-83))
Hari, who is established everywhere, is known as the fivefold cause; for those who seek the truth, the principle is explained through causes from every direction. (12-335-83)
तत्त्वमेको महायोगी हरिर्नारायणः प्रभुः। सब्रह्मकानां लोकानामृषीणां च महात्मनाम् ॥१२-३३५-८४॥
tattvameko mahāyogī harirnārāyaṇaḥ prabhuḥ। sabrahmakānāṃ lokānāmṛṣīṇāṃ ca mahātmanām ॥12-335-84॥
[तत्त्वम् (tattvam) - principle; essence; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; single; महायोगी (mahāyogī) - great yogi; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; (Vishnu); नारायणः (nārāyaṇaḥ) - Nārāyaṇa; (Vishnu); प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - lord; master; स (sa) - he; ब्रह्मकानाम् (brahmakānām) - of those who have attained Brahman; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of worlds; ऋषीणाम् (ṛṣīṇām) - of sages; च (ca) - and; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of great souls;]
(Principle one great yogi Hari Nārāyaṇa lord; he of those who have attained Brahman, of worlds, of sages and of great souls; (12-335-84))
The one principle, the great yogi, Hari Nārāyaṇa, the lord, he is of those who have attained Brahman, of the worlds, of the sages, and of the great souls. (12-335-84)
साङ्ख्यानां योगिनां चापि यतीनामात्मवेदिनाम्। मनीषितं विजानाति केशवो न तु तस्य ते ॥१२-३३५-८५॥
sāṅkhyānāṃ yogināṃ cāpi yatīnām ātmavedinām। manīṣitaṃ vijānāti keśavo na tu tasya te ॥12-335-85॥
[साङ्ख्यानाम् (sāṅkhyānām) - of the Sāṅkhyas; योगिनाम् (yoginām) - of the Yogins; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; यतीनाम् (yatīnām) - of the ascetics; आत्मवेदिनाम् (ātmavedinām) - of the knowers of the self; मनीषितम् (manīṣitam) - the intention; विजानाति (vijānāti) - knows; केशवः (keśavaḥ) - Keśava; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; तस्य (tasya) - of him; ते (te) - to you;]
(Of the Sāṅkhyas, of the Yogins, and also of the ascetics, of the knowers of the self, the intention Keśava knows, not but of him to you.)
Keśava knows the intentions of the Sāṅkhyas, Yogins, ascetics, and knowers of the self, but not those of him to you. (12-335-85)
ये केचित्सर्वलोकेषु दैवं पित्र्यं च कुर्वते। दानानि च प्रयच्छन्ति तप्यन्ति च तपो महत् ॥१२-३३५-८६॥
ye kecit sarvalokeṣu daivaṃ pitryaṃ ca kurvate। dānāni ca prayacchanti tapyanti ca tapo mahat ॥12-335-86॥
[ये (ye) - whoever; केचित् (kecit) - some; सर्वलोकेषु (sarvalokeṣu) - in all worlds; दैवं (daivam) - relating to the gods; पित्र्यं (pitryam) - relating to the ancestors; च (ca) - and; कुर्वते (kurvate) - perform; दानानि (dānāni) - gifts; च (ca) - and; प्रयच्छन्ति (prayacchanti) - give; तप्यन्ति (tapyanti) - perform austerities; च (ca) - and; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; महत् (mahat) - great;]
(Whoever some in all worlds perform acts relating to the gods and ancestors, and give gifts, and perform austerities, and great austerity.)
Whoever, in all worlds, perform rites for the gods and ancestors, give gifts, and undertake great austerities, (12-335-86)
सर्वेषामाश्रयो विष्णुरैश्वरं विधिमास्थितः। सर्वभूतकृतावासो वासुदेवेति चोच्यते ॥१२-३३५-८७॥
sarveṣām āśrayo viṣṇur aiśvaraṃ vidhim āsthitaḥ। sarvabhūtakṛtāvāso vāsudeveti cocyate ॥12-335-87॥
[सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; आश्रयः (āśrayaḥ) - support; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; ऐश्वरम् (aiśvaram) - sovereignty; विधिम् (vidhim) - order; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - established; सर्वभूतकृत (sarvabhūtakṛta) - maker of all beings; आवासः (āvāsaḥ) - abode; वासुदेव (vāsudeva) - Vāsudeva; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called;]
(Of all, the support Viṣṇu, sovereignty, order established; maker of all beings, abode, thus Vāsudeva and is called.)
Viṣṇu is the support of all, established in sovereign order; as the maker and abode of all beings, he is called "Vāsudeva". (12-335-87)
अयं हि नित्यः परमो महर्षि; र्महाविभूतिर्गुणवान्निर्गुणाख्यः। गुणैश्च संयोगमुपैति शीघ्रं; कालो यथर्तावृतुसम्प्रयुक्तः ॥१२-३३५-८८॥
ayaṃ hi nityaḥ paramo maharṣiḥ; mahāvibhūtir guṇavān nirguṇākhyaḥ. guṇaiś ca saṃyogam upaiti śīghraṃ; kālo yathartāv ṛtusamprayuktaḥ ॥12-335-88॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; नित्यः (nityaḥ) - eternal; परमः (paramaḥ) - supreme; महर्षिः (maharṣiḥ) - great sage; महाविभूतिः (mahāvibhūtiḥ) - possessing great powers; गुणवान् (guṇavān) - endowed with qualities; निर्गुणाख्यः (nirguṇākhyaḥ) - called without qualities; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - by qualities; च (ca) - and; संयोगम् (saṃyogam) - union; उपैति (upaiti) - attains; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; यथा (yathā) - just as; ऋतौ (ṛtau) - in the season; सम्प्रयुक्तः (samprayuktaḥ) - being joined;]
(This indeed eternal supreme great sage, possessing great powers, endowed with qualities, called without qualities, by qualities and union attains quickly; time just as in the season being joined.)
This truly eternal, supreme great sage, who possesses great powers, is endowed with qualities and is called 'without qualities', quickly attains union with the qualities; just as time, when joined with the season, acts accordingly. (12-335-88)
नैवास्य विन्दन्ति गतिं महात्मनो; न चागतिं कश्चिदिहानुपस्यति। ज्ञानात्मकाः संयमिनो महर्षयः; पश्यन्ति नित्यं पुरुषं गुणाधिकम् ॥१२-३३५-८९॥
naivāsya vindanti gatiṃ mahātmanaḥ; na cāgatiṃ kaścidihānupasyati. jñānātmakāḥ saṃyaminō maharṣayaḥ; paśyanti nityaṃ puruṣaṃ guṇādhikam ॥12-335-89॥
[न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - of him; विन्दन्ति (vindanti) - find; गतिम् (gatim) - path; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great soul; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; आगतिम् (āgatim) - arrival; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; इह (iha) - here; अनुपश्यति (anupaśyati) - perceives; ज्ञानात्मकाः (jñānātmakāḥ) - of the nature of knowledge; संयमिनः (saṃyaminaḥ) - self-restrained; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages; पश्यन्ति (paśyanti) - see; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; पुरुषम् (puruṣam) - the person; गुणाधिकम् (guṇādhikam) - superior in qualities;]
(Not indeed do they find the path of him, of the great soul; nor does anyone here perceive the arrival. Of the nature of knowledge, self-restrained great sages always see the person superior in qualities.)
Truly, none find the path of that great soul, nor does anyone here perceive his coming. The great sages, who are self-restrained and of the nature of knowledge, always see the person who is superior in qualities. (12-335-89)
