(Indeed, surely, those who are exclusively devoted, all, pleases, the Lord, Hari. Enjoined by rule, worship, and, accepts, the Lord, himself. (12-336-1))

ये तु दग्धेन्धना लोके पुण्यपापविवर्जिताः। तेषां त्वयाभिनिर्दिष्टा पारम्पर्यागता गतिः ॥१२-३३६-२॥

चतुर्थ्यां चैव ते गत्यां गच्छन्ति पुरुषोत्तमम्। एकान्तिनस्तु पुरुषा गच्छन्ति परमं पदम् ॥१२-३३६-३॥
caturthyāṃ caiva te gatyāṃ gacchanti puruṣottamam। ekāntinas tu puruṣā gacchanti paramaṃ padam ॥12-336-3॥

सहोपनिषदान्वेदान्ये विप्राः सम्यगास्थिताः। पठन्ति विधिमास्थाय ये चापि यतिधर्मिणः ॥१२-३३६-५॥
sahopaniṣadānvedānye viprāḥ samyagāsthitāḥ। paṭhanti vidhimāsthāya ye cāpi yatidharmiṇaḥ ॥12-336-5॥

O Lord, what is the practice of those who are exclusively devoted, and when did it arise? Please dispel this doubt of mine; for I have the highest curiosity. (12-336-7)

संमितः सामवेदेन पुरैवादियुगे कृतः। धार्यते स्वयमीशेन राजन्नारायणेन ह ॥१२-३३६-१०॥
saṁmitaḥ sāmavedena puraivādiyuge kṛtaḥ। dhāryate svayam īśena rājannārāyaṇena ha ॥12-336-10॥

फेनपा ऋषयश्चैव तं धर्मं प्रतिपेदिरे। वैखानसाः फेनपेभ्यो धर्ममेतं प्रपेदिरे ॥ वैखानसेभ्यः सोमस्तु ततः सोऽन्तर्दधे पुनः ॥१२-३३६-१४॥
phenapā ṛṣayaś caiva taṃ dharmaṃ pratipedire। vaikhānasāḥ phenapebhyo dharmam etaṃ prapedire ॥ vaikhānasebhyaḥ somas tu tataḥ so'ntardadhe punaḥ ॥12-336-14॥

yad āsīc cākṣuṣaṃ janma dvitīyaṃ brahmaṇo nṛpa। tadā pitāmahāt somād etaṃ dharmam ajānata ॥ nārāyaṇātmakaṃ rājan rudrāya pradadau ca saḥ ॥12-336-15॥

त्रिः परिक्रान्तवानेतत्सुपर्णो धर्ममुत्तमम्। यस्मात्तस्माद्व्रतं ह्येतत्त्रिसौपर्णमिहोच्यते ॥१२-३३६-१९॥
triḥ parikrāntavānetatsuparṇo dharmamuttamam। yasmāttasmādvrataṃ hyetattrisauparṇamihocyate ॥12-336-19॥
[त्रिः (triḥ) - three times; परिक्रान्तवान् (parikrāntavān) - one who has gone around; एतत् (etat) - this; सुपर्णः (suparṇaḥ) - Suparṇa (Garuda); धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; हि (hi) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; त्रिसौपर्णम् (trisauparṇam) - threefold Suparṇa; इह (iha) - here; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called;]
(Three times having gone around this, Suparṇa (Garuda) (attained) the supreme dharma; because of this, therefore, this vow is indeed here called the threefold Suparṇa.)
Suparṇa (Garuda) went around this three times and attained the highest dharma; therefore, this vow is indeed called here the 'threefold Suparṇa'. (12-336-19)
ऋग्वेदपाठपठितं व्रतमेतद्धि दुश्चरम्। सुपर्णाच्चाप्यधिगतो धर्म एष सनातनः ॥१२-३३६-२०॥
ṛgvedapāṭha-paṭhitaṃ vratam etad dhi duścaram। suparṇāc cāpy adhigato dharma eṣa sanātanaḥ ॥12-336-20॥

This vow of reciting the Ṛgveda is indeed difficult to perform; and this eternal dharma was also attained from Suparṇa. (12-336-20)
वायुना द्विपदां श्रेष्ठ प्रथितो जगदायुषा। वायोः सकाशात्प्राप्तश्च ऋषिभिर्विघसाशिभिः ॥१२-३३६-२१॥
vāyunā dvipadāṃ śreṣṭha prathito jagadāyuṣā। vāyoḥ sakāśāt prāptaś ca ṛṣibhir vighasāśibhiḥ ॥12-336-21॥
[वायुना (vāyunā) - by Vāyu; (the wind); द्विपदां (dvipadām) - of bipeds; (two-footed beings); श्रेष्ठ (śreṣṭha) - best; superior; प्रथितो (prathitaḥ) - celebrated; renowned; जगदायुषा (jagadāyuṣā) - with the life of the world; (life-giver to the world); वायोः (vāyoḥ) - from Vāyu; (the wind); सकाशात् (sakāśāt) - from the presence; from the proximity; प्राप्तश्च (prāptaś ca) - and obtained; and received; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by the sages; विघसाशिभिः (vighasāśibhiḥ) - by those who eat remnants; (ascetics living on leftovers);]
(By Vāyu, the best of bipeds, celebrated with the life of the world. From Vāyu's proximity, and obtained by the sages who eat remnants.)
The best among bipeds, celebrated as the life-giver of the world by Vāyu, was obtained from the presence of Vāyu by sages who subsist on remnants. (12-336-21)
तेभ्यो महोदधिश्चैनं प्राप्तवान्धर्ममुत्तमम्। ततः सोऽन्तर्दधे भूयो नारायणसमाहितः ॥१२-३३६-२२॥
tebhyo mahodadhiś cainaṃ prāptavān dharmam uttamam। tataḥ so'ntardadhe bhūyo nārāyaṇasamāhitaḥ ॥12-336-22॥

(To them the great ocean also obtained this supreme dharma. Then he disappeared again, absorbed in Nārāyaṇa. (12-336-22))

yadā bhūyaḥ śravaṇajā sṛṣṭir āsīn mahātmanaḥ। brahmaṇaḥ puruṣavyāghra tatra kīrtayataḥ śṛṇu ॥12-336-23॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; श्रवणजा (śravaṇajā) - born from hearing; सृष्टिः (sṛṣṭiḥ) - creation; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great soul; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahman; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - O tiger among men; तत्र (tatra) - there; कीर्तयतः (kīrtayataḥ) - of the one who is praising; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen;]
(When again a creation born from hearing was (there) of the great soul Brahman, O tiger among men, there, of the one who is praising, listen.)

जगत्स्रष्टुमना देवो हरिर्नारायणः स्वयम्। चिन्तयामास पुरुषं जगत्सर्गकरं प्रभुः ॥१२-३३६-२४॥
jagatsraṣṭumanā devo harirnārāyaṇaḥ svayam। cintayāmāsa puruṣaṃ jagatsargakaraṃ prabhuḥ ॥12-336-24॥
[जगत् (jagat) - world; स्रष्टु (sraṣṭu) - to create; मना (manā) - having the mind intent on; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; नारायणः (nārāyaṇaḥ) - Nārāyaṇa; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - pondered; पुरुषम् (puruṣam) - the person; जगत् (jagat) - world; सर्ग (sarga) - creation; करम् (karam) - maker; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(The god Hari Nārāyaṇa himself, having the mind intent on creating the world, pondered the person, the maker of the world's creation, the lord.)
Hari Nārāyaṇa, the god himself, desiring to create the world, contemplated the person who would be the creator of the world, the lord. (12-336-24)
अथ चिन्तयतस्तस्य कर्णाभ्यां पुरुषः सृतः। प्रजासर्गकरो ब्रह्मा तमुवाच जगत्पतिः ॥१२-३३६-२५॥
atha cintayatastasya karṇābhyāṃ puruṣaḥ sṛtaḥ। prajāsargakaro brahmā tamuvāca jagatpatiḥ ॥12-336-25॥
[अथ (atha) - then; चिन्तयतः (cintayataḥ) - of (him) thinking; तस्य (tasya) - his; कर्णाभ्यां (karṇābhyām) - from the two ears; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - a man; सृतः (sṛtaḥ) - emerged; प्रजासर्गकरः (prajāsargakaraḥ) - creator of the progeny; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; तम् (tam) - to him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; जगत्पतिः (jagatpatiḥ) - lord of the world;]
(Then, as he was thinking, from his two ears a man emerged; the creator of progeny, Brahmā, the lord of the world, said to him.)

सृज प्रजाः पुत्र सर्वा मुखतः पादतस्तथा। श्रेयस्तव विधास्यामि बलं तेजश्च सुव्रत ॥१२-३३६-२६॥
sṛja prajāḥ putra sarvā mukhataḥ pādatastathā। śreyastava vidhāsyāmi balaṃ tejaśca suvrata ॥12-336-26॥

(Create offspring, son, all, from the mouth, from the feet, thus; welfare your I shall arrange, strength, energy and, O well-vowed.)

धर्मं च मत्तो गृह्णीष्व सात्वतं नाम नामतः। तेन सर्वं कृतयुगं स्थापयस्व यथाविधि ॥१२-३३६-२७॥
dharmaṃ ca matto gṛhṇīṣva sātvataṃ nāma nāmataḥ। tena sarvaṃ kṛtayugaṃ sthāpayasva yathāvidhi ॥12-336-27॥

(Righteousness and from me accept Sātvata (name) by name; by that all Kṛta Yuga establish according to rule.)

ततो ब्रह्मा नमश्चक्रे देवाय हरिमेधसे। धर्मं चाग्र्यं स जग्राह सरहस्यं ससङ्ग्रहम् ॥ आरण्यकेन सहितं नारायणमुखोद्गतम् ॥१२-३३६-२८॥
tato brahmā namaścakre devāya harimedhase। dharmaṃ cāgryaṃ sa jagrāha sarahasyaṃ sasaṅgraham ॥ āraṇyakena sahitaṃ nārāyaṇamukhodgatam ॥12-336-28॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; नमः (namaḥ) - obeisance; चक्रे (cakre) - made; देवाय (devāya) - to the god; हरिमेधसे (harimedhase) - to Hari the wise; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - dharma; च (ca) - and; आग्र्यम् (āgryam) - supreme; सः (saḥ) - he; जग्राह (jagrāha) - accepted; सरहस्यं (sarahasyaṃ) - with secret; ससङ्ग्रहम् (sasaṅgraham) - with compendium; आरण्यकेन (āraṇyakena) - with the Āraṇyaka; सहितम् (sahitam) - together; नारायणमुखोद्गतम् (nārāyaṇamukhodgatam) - issued from the mouth of Nārāyaṇa;]
(Then Brahmā made obeisance to the god Hari the wise. He accepted the supreme dharma, with secret and compendium, together with the Āraṇyaka, issued from the mouth of Nārāyaṇa. (12-336-28))

उपदिश्य ततो धर्मं ब्रह्मणेऽमिततेजसे। तं कार्तयुगधर्माणं निराशीःकर्मसञ्ज्ञितम् ॥ जगाम तमसः पारं यत्राव्यक्तं व्यवस्थितम् ॥१२-३३६-२९॥
upadiśya tato dharmaṃ brahmaṇe'mitatejase। taṃ kārtayugadharmāṇaṃ nirāśīḥkarmasañjñitam ॥ jagāma tamasaḥ pāraṃ yatrāvyaktaṃ vyavasthitam ॥12-336-29॥

(Having instructed then duty to Brahmā of immeasurable splendor; that relating to the duties of the Kṛta Yuga, characterized by action without desire for results; he went to the far shore of darkness, where the unmanifest is established. (12-336-29))

tato'tha varado devo brahmalokapitāmahaḥ। asṛjatsa tadā lokānkṛtsnānsthāvarajaṅgamān ॥12-336-30॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from then; अथ (atha) - then; वरदः (varadaḥ) - the giver of boons; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; ब्रह्मलोकपितामहः (brahmalokapitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire of the world of Brahma; असृजत् (asṛjat) - created; स (sa) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; कृत्स्नान् (kṛtsnān) - all; स्थावरजङ्गमान् (sthāvarajaṅgamān) - immovable and movable (beings);]

ततः प्रावर्तत तदा आदौ कृतयुगं शुभम्। ततो हि सात्वतो धर्मो व्याप्य लोकानवस्थितः ॥१२-३३६-३१॥
tataḥ prāvartata tadā ādau kṛtayugaṃ śubham। tato hi sātvato dharmo vyāpya lokānavasthitaḥ ॥12-336-31॥

(From then arose then in the beginning the auspicious Kṛta Yuga. From then indeed the dharma of sattva, pervading the worlds, remained. (12-336-31))

tenaivaādyena dharmeṇa brahmā lokavisargakṛt। pūjayāmāsa deveśaṃ hariṃ nārāyaṇaṃ prabhum ॥12-336-32॥

(By that very first dharma, Brahmā, creator of the emission of worlds, worshipped the lord of the gods, Hari, Nārāyaṇa, the master.)

धर्मप्रतिष्ठाहेतोश्च मनुं स्वारोचिषं ततः। अध्यापयामास तदा लोकानां हितकाम्यया ॥१२-३३६-३३॥
dharmapratiṣṭhāhetośca manuṃ svārociṣaṃ tataḥ। adhyāpayāmāsa tadā lokānāṃ hitakāmyayā ॥12-336-33॥

nāsikyajanmani purā brahmaṇaḥ pārthivottama। dharmam etaṃ svayaṃ devo harir nārāyaṇaḥ prabhuḥ ॥ ujjagāra aravindākṣaḥ brahmaṇaḥ paśyataḥ tadā ॥12-336-36॥

सनत्कुमारो भगवांस्ततः प्राधीतवान्नृप। सनत्कुमारादपि च वीरणो वै प्रजापतिः ॥ कृतादौ कुरुशार्दूल धर्ममेतमधीतवान् ॥१२-३३६-३७॥
sanatkumāro bhagavāṃstataḥ prādhītavānnṛpa। sanatkumārādapi ca vīraṇo vai prajāpatiḥ ॥ kṛtādau kuruśārdūla dharmametamadhītavān ॥12-336-37॥

पितामहाय शुद्धाय युगादौ लोकधारिणे। पितामहश्च दक्षाय धर्ममेतं पुरा ददौ ॥१२-३३६-४५॥
pitāmahāya śuddhāya yugādau lokadhāriṇe। pitāmahaś ca dakṣāya dharmam etaṃ purā dadau ॥12-336-45॥

अकर्ता चैव कर्ता च कार्यं कारणमेव च। यथेच्छति तथा राजन्क्रीडते पुरुषोऽव्ययः ॥१२-३३६-५६॥
akartā caiva kartā ca kāryaṃ kāraṇam-eva ca। yathecchati tathā rājan-krīḍate puruṣo'vyayaḥ ॥12-336-56॥

एष एकान्तिधर्मस्ते कीर्तितो नृपसत्तम। मया गुरुप्रसादेन दुर्विज्ञेयोऽकृतात्मभिः ॥ एकान्तिनो हि पुरुषा दुर्लभा बहवो नृप ॥१२-३३६-५७॥

(This exclusive quality has been declared to you, O best of kings, by me through the grace of the teacher; it is difficult to understand by those whose self is not disciplined. Indeed, exclusive men are rare, many, O king.)
O best of kings, this exclusive quality has been explained to you by me through the grace of the teacher; it is difficult to comprehend for those whose minds are undisciplined. Truly, men of exclusive devotion are rare, though many exist, O king. (12-336-57)
यद्येकान्तिभिराकीर्णं जगत्स्यात्कुरुनन्दन। अहिंसकैरात्मविद्भिः सर्वभूतहिते रतैः ॥ भवेत्कृतयुगप्राप्तिराशीःकर्मविवर्जितैः ॥१२-३३६-५८॥
yadyekāntibhirākīrṇaṃ jagatsyātkurunandana। ahiṃsakairātmavidbhiḥ sarvabhūtahite rataiḥ ॥ bhavetkṛtayugaprāptirāśīḥkarmavivarjitaiḥ ॥12-336-58॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; एकान्तिभिः (ekāntibhiḥ) - by those who are single-minded; आकीर्णं (ākīrṇam) - filled; जगत् (jagat) - world; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kurus; अहिंसकैः (ahiṃsakaiḥ) - by the non-violent; आत्मविद्भिः (ātmavidbhiḥ) - by the knowers of the self; सर्वभूतहिते (sarvabhūtahite) - in the welfare of all beings; रतैः (rataiḥ) - engaged; भवेत् (bhavet) - there would be; कृतयुगप्राप्तिः (kṛtayugaprāptiḥ) - attainment of the Kṛta Yuga; आशीःकर्मविवर्जितैः (āśīḥkarmavivarjitaiḥ) - by those free from acts of wishing;]
(If, O joy of the Kurus, the world were filled by those who are single-minded, by the non-violent, by the knowers of the self, engaged in the welfare of all beings, there would be the attainment of the Kṛta Yuga by those free from acts of wishing.)
O joy of the Kurus, if the world were filled with single-minded, non-violent knowers of the self, devoted to the welfare of all beings and free from acts of wishing, then the Kṛta Yuga would be attained. (12-336-58)
एवं स भगवान्व्यासो गुरुर्मम विशां पते। कथयामास धर्मज्ञो धर्मराज्ञे द्विजोत्तमः ॥१२-३३६-५९॥
evaṁ sa bhagavān vyāso gurur mama viśāṁ pate। kathayām āsa dharmajño dharmarājñe dvijottamaḥ ॥12-336-59॥

(Thus he, the venerable Vyāsa, my teacher, O lord of the peoples, narrated, the knower of dharma, to Dharmarāja, the best of the twice-born.)

ऋषीणां संनिधौ राजञ्शृण्वतोः कृष्णभीष्मयोः। तस्याप्यकथयत्पूर्वं नारदः सुमहातपाः ॥१२-३३६-६०॥
ṛṣīṇāṃ saṃnidhau rājañśṛṇvatoḥ kṛṣṇabhīṣmayoḥ। tasyāpyakathayatpūrvaṃ nāradaḥ sumahātapāḥ ॥12-336-60॥

devaṃ paramakaṃ brahma śvetaṃ candrābhamacyutam। yatra caikāntino yānti nārāyaṇaparāyaṇāḥ ॥12-336-61॥

(The divine, supreme Brahman, white, with the radiance of the moon, imperishable; where also the single-minded devoted, whose supreme goal is Nārāyaṇa, go.)
That divine, supreme Brahman, white and radiant like the moon, imperishable, is the place where those single-minded devotees whose supreme goal is Nārāyaṇa go. (12-336-61)

evaṃ bahuvidhaṃ dharmaṃ pratibuddhairniṣevitam। na kurvanti kathaṃ viprā anye nānāvrate sthitāḥ ॥12-336-62॥

Thus, the many kinds of dharma practiced by the awakened—how is it that other brāhmaṇas, engaged in various vows, do not perform them? (12-336-62)

[तिस्रः (tisraḥ) - three; प्रकृतयः (prakṛtayaḥ) - natures; राजन् (rājan) - O king; देहबन्धेषु (dehabandheṣu) - in bodily bonds; निर्मिताः (nirmitāḥ) - formed; सात्त्विकी (sāttvikī) - of sattva; राजसी (rājasī) - of rajas; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तामसी (tāmasī) - of tamas; च (ca) - and; इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata;]
(Three natures, O king, are formed in bodily bonds: of sattva, of rajas, and of tamas, thus, O descendant of Bharata.)

देहबन्धेषु पुरुषः श्रेष्ठः कुरुकुलोद्वह। सात्त्विकः पुरुषव्याघ्र भवेन्मोक्षार्थनिश्चितः ॥१२-३३६-६४॥
dehabandheṣu puruṣaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ kurukulodvaha। sāttvikaḥ puruṣavyāghra bhavenmokṣārthanicchitaḥ ॥12-336-64॥
[देह (deha) - body; बन्धेषु (bandheṣu) - in bonds; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - person; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - best; कुरुकुलोद्वह (kurukulodvaha) - O uplifter of the Kuru lineage; सात्त्विकः (sāttvikaḥ) - possessed of sattva; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - O tiger among men; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; मोक्षार्थ (mokṣārtha) - for the sake of liberation; निश्चितः (niścitaḥ) - determined;]
(In the bonds of the body, the person, best, O uplifter of the Kuru lineage, possessed of sattva, O tiger among men, should be determined for the sake of liberation.)
O best among men, O uplifter of the Kuru lineage, one who is possessed of sattva, O tiger among men, should be firmly determined for liberation even while bound in the body. (12-336-64)
अत्रापि स विजानाति पुरुषं ब्रह्मवर्तिनम्। नारायणपरो मोक्षस्ततो वै सात्त्विकः स्मृतः ॥१२-३३६-६५॥
atrāpi sa vijānāti puruṣaṃ brahmavartinam। nārāyaṇaparo mokṣastato vai sāttvikaḥ smṛtaḥ ॥12-336-65॥
[अत्रापि (atrāpi) - here also; स (sa) - he; विजानाति (vijānāti) - knows; पुरुषं (puruṣam) - person; ब्रह्मवर्तिनम् (brahmavartinam) - engaged in Brahman; नारायणपरो (nārāyaṇaparaḥ) - devoted to Nārāyaṇa; मोक्षः (mokṣaḥ) - liberation; ततः (tataḥ) - from that; वै (vai) - indeed; सात्त्विकः (sāttvikaḥ) - of sattva (goodness); स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is remembered;]
(Here also he knows the person engaged in Brahman. Devoted to Nārāyaṇa, liberation from that indeed is remembered as of sattva (goodness).)
Here too, he recognizes the person engaged in Brahman. Liberation attained by one devoted to Nārāyaṇa is indeed regarded as sāttvika (of the quality of goodness). (12-336-65)
मनीषितं च प्राप्नोति चिन्तयन्पुरुषोत्तमम्। एकान्तभक्तिः सततं नारायणपरायणः ॥१२-३३६-६६॥
manīṣitaṃ ca prāpnoti cintayanpuruṣottamam। ekāntabhaktiḥ satataṃ nārāyaṇaparāyaṇaḥ ॥12-336-66॥
[मनीषितं (manīṣitam) - desired; sought after; च (ca) - and; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; obtains; चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - contemplating; thinking; पुरुषोत्तमम् (puruṣottamam) - the Supreme Person; the highest being; एकान्तभक्तिः (ekāntabhaktiḥ) - exclusive devotion; सततं (satataṃ) - always; continuously; नारायणपरायणः (nārāyaṇaparāyaṇaḥ) - one whose supreme goal is Nārāyaṇa;]
(Desiring and attains, contemplating the Supreme Person; with exclusive devotion, always, one whose supreme goal is Nārāyaṇa.)
By contemplating the Supreme Person, one attains what is desired; with exclusive devotion, always devoted to Nārāyaṇa, (12-336-66).
मनीषिणो हि ये केचिद्यतयो मोक्षकाङ्क्षिणः। तेषां वै छिन्नतृष्णानां योगक्षेमवहो हरिः ॥१२-३३६-६७॥
manīṣiṇo hi ye kecid yatayo mokṣakāṅkṣiṇaḥ। teṣāṃ vai chinnatṛṣṇānāṃ yogakṣemavaho hariḥ ॥12-336-67॥
[मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - wise ones; हि (hi) - indeed; ये (ye) - who; केचित् (kecit) - some; यतयः (yatayaḥ) - ascetics; मोक्षकाङ्क्षिणः (mokṣakāṅkṣiṇaḥ) - desiring liberation; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; वै (vai) - indeed; छिन्नतृष्णानाम् (chinnatṛṣṇānām) - of those whose thirst (desire) is cut; योगक्षेमवहः (yogakṣemavahaḥ) - bearer of acquisition and preservation; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari (Viṣṇu);]
(Wise ones indeed who some ascetics desiring liberation; of them indeed of those whose thirst is cut; bearer of acquisition and preservation Hari;)
Indeed, among all the wise, those ascetics who desire liberation—of those whose desires have been cut off, Hari (Viṣṇu) is truly the bearer of their acquisition and preservation. (12-336-67)
जायमानं हि पुरुषं यं पश्येन्मधुसूदनः। सात्त्विकस्तु स विज्ञेयो भवेन्मोक्षे च निश्चितः ॥१२-३३६-६८॥
jāyamānaṃ hi puruṣaṃ yaṃ paśyen madhusūdanaḥ। sāttvikas tu sa vijñeyo bhaven mokṣe ca niścitaḥ ॥12-336-68॥
[जायमानं (jāyamānam) - being born; हि (hi) - indeed; पुरुषं (puruṣam) - person; यं (yaṃ) - whom; पश्येत् (paśyet) - may see; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusūdana; सात्त्विकः (sāttvikaḥ) - possessed of sattva; तु (tu) - but; स (sa) - he; विज्ञेयः (vijñeyaḥ) - to be known; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; मोक्षे (mokṣe) - in liberation; च (ca) - and; निश्चितः (niścitaḥ) - certain;]
(Being born indeed person whom may see Madhusūdana; possessed of sattva but he to be known should be in liberation and certain.)
Indeed, the person whom Madhusūdana sees at birth should be known as possessed of sattva; he is certain to attain liberation. (12-336-68)
साङ्ख्ययोगेन तुल्यो हि धर्म एकान्तसेवितः। नारायणात्मके मोक्षे ततो यान्ति परां गतिम् ॥१२-३३६-६९॥
sāṅkhyayogena tulyo hi dharma ekāntasevitaḥ। nārāyaṇātmake mokṣe tato yānti parāṃ gatim ॥12-336-69॥
[साङ्ख्ययोगेन (sāṅkhyayogena) - by Sāṅkhya-yoga; तुल्यः (tulyaḥ) - equal; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; एकान्तसेवितः (ekāntasevitaḥ) - exclusively practiced; नारायणात्मके (nārāyaṇātmake) - in that which has Nārāyaṇa as its essence; मोक्षे (mokṣe) - in liberation; ततः (tataḥ) - from that; यान्ति (yānti) - they go; पराम् (parām) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - state;]
(By Sāṅkhya-yoga, equal indeed is the duty exclusively practiced; in that which has Nārāyaṇa as its essence, in liberation, from that they go to the supreme state.)
The duty that is exclusively practiced through Sāṅkhya-yoga is indeed equal; in liberation, which has Nārāyaṇa as its essence, from that they attain the supreme state. (12-336-69)
नारायणेन दृष्टश्च प्रतिबुद्धो भवेत्पुमान्। एवमात्मेच्छया राजन्प्रतिबुद्धो न जायते ॥१२-३३६-७०॥
nārāyaṇena dṛṣṭaś ca pratibuddho bhavet pumān। evam ātmechchhayā rājan pratibuddho na jāyate ॥12-336-70॥
[नारायणेन (nārāyaṇena) - by Nārāyaṇa; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; च (ca) - and; प्रतिबुद्धः (pratibuddhaḥ) - awakened; भवेत् (bhavet) - may become; पुमान् (pumān) - man; एवम् (evam) - thus; आत्मेच्छया (ātmechchhayā) - by one's own will; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रतिबुद्धः (pratibuddhaḥ) - awakened; न (na) - not; जायते (jāyate) - is born;]
(By Nārāyaṇa seen and awakened may become man. Thus by one's own will, O king, awakened is not born.)
A man becomes awakened when seen by Nārāyaṇa; but, O king, one is not awakened by his own will. (12-336-70)
राजसी तामसी चैव व्यामिश्रे प्रकृती स्मृते। तदात्मकं हि पुरुषं जायमानं विशां पते ॥ प्रवृत्तिलक्षणैर्युक्तं नावेक्षति हरिः स्वयम् ॥१२-३३६-७१॥
rājasī tāmasī caiva vyāmiśre prakṛtī smṛte। tadātmakaṃ hi puruṣaṃ jāyamānaṃ viśāṃ pate॥ pravṛttilakṣaṇairyuktaṃ nāvekṣati hariḥ svayam॥12-336-71॥
[राजसी (rājasī) - of the quality of passion; तामसी (tāmasī) - of the quality of darkness; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; व्यामिश्रे (vyāmiśre) - mixed; प्रकृती (prakṛtī) - natures; स्मृते (smṛte) - are considered; तदात्मकं (tadātmakaṃ) - of that nature; हि (hi) - indeed; पुरुषं (puruṣaṃ) - person; जायमानं (jāyamānaṃ) - being born; विशां (viśāṃ) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord; प्रवृत्तिलक्षणैः (pravṛttilakṣaṇaiḥ) - with the characteristics of activity; युक्तं (yuktaṃ) - endowed; न (na) - not; अवेक्षति (avekṣati) - regards; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself;]
(The passionate, the dark, and indeed the mixed natures are considered. Of that nature indeed, the person being born, O lord of men, endowed with the characteristics of activity, Hari himself does not regard.)
The natures called passionate, dark, and mixed are recognized. A person born with such a nature, O lord of men, and endowed with the characteristics of activity, is not regarded by Hari himself. (12-336-71)
पश्यत्येनं जायमानं ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः। रजसा तमसा चैव मानुषं समभिप्लुतम् ॥१२-३३६-७२॥
paśyaty enaṃ jāyamānaṃ brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ। rajasā tamasā caiva mānuṣaṃ samabhiplutam ॥12-336-72॥
[पश्यति (paśyati) - sees; एनम् (enam) - this; जायमानम् (jāyamānam) - being born; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; लोकपितामहः (lokapitāmahaḥ) - grandfather of the worlds; रजसा (rajasā) - by rajas (passion); तमसा (tamasā) - by tamas (darkness); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मानुषम् (mānuṣam) - human; समभिप्लुतम् (samabhiplutam) - completely pervaded;]
(Brahmā, the grandfather of the worlds, sees this human being being born, completely pervaded by rajas and tamas indeed.)
Brahmā, the grandsire of the worlds, observes this human being at birth, thoroughly enveloped by rajas and tamas. (12-336-72)
कामं देवाश्च ऋषयः सत्त्वस्था नृपसत्तम। हीनाः सत्त्वेन सूक्ष्मेण ततो वैकारिकाः स्मृताः ॥१२-३३६-७३॥
kāmaṃ devāś ca ṛṣayaḥ sattvasthā nṛpasattama। hīnāḥ sattvena sūkṣmeṇa tato vaikārikāḥ smṛtāḥ ॥12-336-73॥
[कामं (kāmaṃ) - indeed; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; च (ca) - and; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - seers; सत्त्वस्था (sattvasthā) - abiding in sattva; नृपसत्तम (nṛpasattama) - O best of kings; हीनाः (hīnāḥ) - devoid; सत्त्वेन (sattvena) - by sattva; सूक्ष्मेण (sūkṣmeṇa) - subtle; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; वैकारिकाः (vaikārikāḥ) - those of vikāra (modification); स्मृताः (smṛtāḥ) - are remembered;]
(Indeed, gods and seers abiding in sattva, O best of kings, those devoid of subtle sattva, therefore, are remembered as vaikārikas. ॥12-336-73॥)
O best of kings, the gods and seers who dwell in sattva are called vaikārikas, but those lacking subtle sattva are also remembered as such. (12-336-73)

(How might a person born of modification go to the Supreme Person? Vaiśampāyana said.)
Vaiśampāyana said, "How can a person, born of modification, reach the Supreme Person?" (12-336-74)
सुसूक्ष्मसत्त्वसंयुक्तं संयुक्तं त्रिभिरक्षरैः। पुरुषः पुरुषं गच्छेन्निष्क्रियः पञ्चविंशकम् ॥१२-३३६-७५॥
susūkṣmasattvasaṃyuktaṃ saṃyuktaṃ tribhirakṣaraiḥ। puruṣaḥ puruṣaṃ gacchenniṣkriyaḥ pañcaviṃśakam ॥12-336-75॥

(Thus, one Sāṅkhya-Yoga, Vedāraṇyaka indeed and; these mutual limbs, Pañcarātra and is said. This is the duty of the single-minded, having Nārāyaṇa as the supreme essence. (12-336-76))

यथा समुद्रात्प्रसृता जलौघा; स्तमेव राजन्पुनराविशन्ति। इमे तथा ज्ञानमहाजलौघा; नारायणं वै पुनराविशन्ति ॥१२-३३६-७७॥

[यथा (yathā) - just as; समुद्रात् (samudrāt) - from the ocean; प्रसृता (prasṛtā) - having flowed forth; जलौघा (jalaughā) - streams of water; स्तम् (tam) - that; एव (eva) - indeed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; आविशन्ति (āviśanti) - enter; इमे (ime) - these; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; ज्ञानमहाजलौघा (jñānamahājalaughā) - great streams of knowledge; नारायणम् (nārāyaṇam) - Nārāyaṇa; वै (vai) - indeed; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; आविशन्ति (āviśanti) - enter;]
(Just as from the ocean, having flowed forth, streams of water, that indeed, O king, again enter; these in the same way, great streams of knowledge, Nārāyaṇa indeed again enter.)
Just as streams of water that have flowed from the ocean, O king, return again to that very ocean, so too do these great streams of knowledge return again to Nārāyaṇa. (12-336-77)
एष ते कथितो धर्मः सात्वतो यदुबान्धव। कुरुष्वैनं यथान्यायं यदि शक्नोषि भारत ॥१२-३३६-७८॥
eṣa te kathito dharmaḥ sātvato yadubāndhava। kuruṣva enaṃ yathā-nyāyaṃ yadi śaknoṣi bhārata ॥12-336-78॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; ते (te) - to you; कथितः (kathitaḥ) - declared; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; सात्वतः (sātvataḥ) - of the Sātvata; यदुबान्धव (yadubāndhava) - O kinsman of the Yadus; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - do; एनम् (enam) - this; यथा (yathā) - as; न्यायम् (nyāyam) - justice; यदि (yadi) - if; शक्नोषि (śaknoṣi) - you are able; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata;]
(This to you declared duty of the Sātvata, O kinsman of the Yadus; do this as justice, if you are able, O descendant of Bharata.)
This is the duty of the Sātvata that has been declared to you, O kinsman of the Yadus. Do this according to justice, if you are able, O descendant of Bharata. (12-336-78)
एवं हि सुमहाभागो नारदो गुरवे मम। श्वेतानां यतिनामाह एकान्तगतिमव्ययाम् ॥१२-३३६-७९॥
evaṃ hi sumahābhāgo nārado gurave mama। śvetānāṃ yatinām āha ekāntagatim avyayām ॥12-336-79॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; हि (hi) - indeed; सुमहाभागः (sumahābhāgaḥ) - very highly fortunate one; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; गुरवे (gurave) - to the teacher; मम (mama) - my; श्वेतानाम् (śvetānām) - of the Śvetas; यतिनाम् (yatinām) - of the ascetics; आह (āha) - said; एकान्तगतिम् (ekāntagatim) - the ultimate state; अव्ययाम् (avyayām) - imperishable;]
(Thus indeed the very highly fortunate Nārada said to my teacher the imperishable ultimate state of the Śveta ascetics.)

(Vyāsa and spoke with affection to Dharmaputra, the wise; he indeed this by me to you told, extended of the teacher.)

इत्थं हि दुश्चरो धर्म एष पार्थिवसत्तम। यथैव त्वं तथैवान्ये न भजन्ति विमोहिताः ॥१२-३३६-८१॥
itthaṁ hi duścaro dharma eṣa pārthivasattama। yathaiva tvaṁ tathaivānye na bhajanti vimohitāḥ ॥12-336-81॥
[इत्थं (ittham) - thus; in this way; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; दुश्चरः (duścaraḥ) - difficult to practice; hard to perform; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; righteousness; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; पार्थिवसत्तम (pārthivasattama) - O best among kings; यथा (yathā) - just as; in the manner; एव (eva) - indeed; exactly; त्वम् (tvam) - you; तथा (tathā) - so; in that way; एव (eva) - indeed; exactly; अन्ये (anye) - others; न (na) - not; भजन्ति (bhajanti) - follow; practice; विमोहिताः (vimohitāḥ) - deluded; confused;]
(Thus indeed difficult to practice is this dharma, O best among kings; just as you, so indeed others, deluded, do not practice.)
O best of kings, this dharma is indeed difficult to practice in this way; just as you do, others who are deluded do not follow it. (12-336-81)
कृष्ण एव हि लोकानां भावनो मोहनस्तथा। संहारकारकश्चैव कारणं च विशां पते ॥१२-३३६-८२॥
kṛṣṇa eva hi lokānāṃ bhāvano mohanas tathā। saṃhārakārakaś caiva kāraṇaṃ ca viśāṃ pate ॥12-336-82॥
[कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; (the dark one, name of the deity); एव (eva) - indeed; only; verily; हि (hi) - for; indeed; surely; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; of the people; भावनः (bhāvanaḥ) - creator; producer; originator; मोहनः (mohanaḥ) - deluder; bewilderer; तथा (tathā) - also; likewise; in that way; संहारकारकः (saṃhārakārakaḥ) - destroyer; agent of dissolution; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; only; verily; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause; reason; च (ca) - and; विशाम् (viśām) - of men; of people; पते (pate) - O lord; O master;]
(Kṛṣṇa indeed for of the worlds creator deluder also destroyer agent and indeed cause and of men O lord.)
O lord of men, Kṛṣṇa alone is indeed the creator of the worlds, the deluder as well as the destroyer, and also the cause. (12-336-82)
