Yudhiṣṭhira said.
धर्माः पितामहेनोक्ता मोक्षधर्माश्रिताः शुभाः। धर्ममाश्रमिणां श्रेष्ठं वक्तुमर्हति मे भवान् ॥१२-३४०-१॥
dharmāḥ pitāmahenoktā mokṣadharmāśritāḥ śubhāḥ। dharmamāśramiṇāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ vaktumarhati me bhavān ॥12-340-1॥
[धर्माः (dharmāḥ) - duties; पितामहेन (pitāmahenā) - by the grandsire; उक्ता (uktā) - spoken; मोक्षधर्म (mokṣadharma) - liberation-duties; आश्रिताः (āśritāḥ) - resorted to; शुभाः (śubhāḥ) - auspicious; धर्मम् (dharmam) - duty; आश्रमिणां (āśramiṇāṃ) - of the dwellers in the āśrama; श्रेष्ठम् (śreṣṭham) - the best; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy; मे (me) - to me; भवान् (bhavān) - you;]
(Duties spoken by the grandsire, resorted to liberation-duties, auspicious; the best duty of the dwellers in the āśrama, to speak, is worthy to me, you. (12-340-1))
The auspicious duties spoken by the grandsire, which are based on the duties leading to liberation; you are worthy to tell me the best duty of the dwellers in the āśrama. (12-340-1)

सर्वत्र विहितो धर्मः स्वर्ग्यः सत्यफलोदयः। बहुद्वारस्य धर्मस्य नेहास्ति विफला क्रिया ॥१२-३४०-२॥
sarvatra vihito dharmaḥ svargyaḥ satyaphalodayaḥ। bahudvārasya dharmasya nehāsti viphālā kriyā ॥12-340-2॥
[सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; विहितः (vihitaḥ) - enjoined; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; स्वर्ग्यः (svargyaḥ) - leading to heaven; सत्यफलोदयः (satyaphalodayaḥ) - having true result arising; बहुद्वारस्य (bahudvārasya) - of many-doored; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of duty; इह (iha) - here; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - is; विफला (viphālā) - fruitless; क्रिया (kriyā) - action;]
(Everywhere enjoined duty leading to heaven having true result arising. Of many-doored duty here not is fruitless action.)
Duty, enjoined everywhere, leads to heaven and brings about true results. For the many-doored duty, here there is no fruitless action. (12-340-2)
यस्मिन्यस्मिंस्तु विषये यो यो याति विनिश्चयम्। स तमेवाभिजानाति नान्यं भरतसत्तम ॥१२-३४०-३॥
yasmin yasmin tu viṣaye yo yaḥ yāti viniścayam। saḥ tam eva abhijānāti na anyam bharatasattama ॥12-340-3॥
[यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in which; यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in which; तु (tu) - but; विषये (viṣaye) - in the matter; यः (yaḥ) - who; यः (yaḥ) - who; याति (yāti) - goes (reaches); विनिश्चयम् (viniścayam) - certainty; सः (saḥ) - he; तम् (tam) - that; एव (eva) - only; अभिजानाति (abhijānāti) - knows; न (na) - not; अन्यम् (anyam) - another; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(In whichever matter, but, who, who, attains certainty; he that only knows, not another, O best of the Bharatas;)
O best of the Bharatas, in whichever matter a person attains certainty, he knows only that and not another. (12-340-3)
अपि च त्वं नरव्याघ्र श्रोतुमर्हसि मे कथाम्। पुरा शक्रस्य कथितां नारदेन सुरर्षिणा ॥१२-३४०-४॥
api ca tvaṃ naravyāghra śrotum arhasi me kathām। purā śakrasya kathitāṃ nāradena surarṣiṇā ॥12-340-4॥
[अपि (api) - indeed; च (ca) - and; त्वम् (tvam) - you; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; अर्हसि (arhasi) - are worthy; मे (me) - from me; कथाम् (kathām) - story; पुरा (purā) - formerly; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra; कथिताम् (kathitām) - told; नारदेन (nāradena) - by Nārada; सुरर्षिणा (surarṣiṇā) - by the sage of the gods;]
(Indeed and you tiger among men to hear are worthy from me story. Formerly of Śakra told by Nārada by the sage of the gods.)
And indeed, O tiger among men, you are worthy to hear from me the story that was formerly told to Śakra by Nārada, the sage of the gods. (12-340-4)
सुरर्षिर्नारदो राजन्सिद्धस्त्रैलोक्यसंमतः। पर्येति क्रमशो लोकान्वायुरव्याहतो यथा ॥१२-३४०-५॥
suraṛṣir nārado rājan siddhas trailokyasaṃmataḥ। paryeti kramaśo lokān vāyur avyāhato yathā ॥12-340-5॥
[सुरर्षिः (suraṛṣiḥ) - divine sage; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सिद्धः (siddhaḥ) - perfected being; त्रैलोक्य (trailokya) - three worlds; संमतः (saṃmataḥ) - respected; पर्येति (paryeti) - moves about; क्रमशः (kramaśaḥ) - in order; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; अव्याहतः (avyāhataḥ) - unobstructed; यथा (yathā) - just as;]
(The divine sage Nārada, O king, a perfected being respected in the three worlds, moves about the worlds in order, just as the wind unobstructed.)
O king, the divine sage Nārada, a perfected being respected throughout the three worlds, moves freely among the worlds in order, just like the unobstructed wind. (12-340-5)
स कदाचिन्महेष्वास देवराजालयं गतः। सत्कृतश्च महेन्द्रेण प्रत्यासन्नगतोऽभवत् ॥१२-३४०-६॥
sa kadācin-maheṣvāsa devarājālayaṃ gataḥ। satkṛtaś-ca mahendreṇa pratyāsannagato'bhavat ॥12-340-6॥
[स (sa) - he; कदाचित् (kadācit) - once; महेष्वास (maheṣvāsa) - great archer; देवराजालयम् (devarājālayam) - abode of the king of gods; गतः (gataḥ) - went; सत्कृतः (satkṛtaḥ) - honored; च (ca) - and; महेन्द्रेण (mahendreṇa) - by Mahendra; प्रत्यासन्नगतः (pratyāsannagataḥ) - having approached; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(He, once, the great archer, went to the abode of the king of gods. Honored and by Mahendra, having approached, became. (12-340-6))

तं कृतक्षणमासीनं पर्यपृच्छच्छचीपतिः। ब्रह्मर्षे किञ्चिदाश्चर्यमस्ति दृष्टं त्वयानघ ॥१२-३४०-७॥
taṃ kṛtakṣaṇam-āsīnaṃ paryapṛcchac-chacīpatiḥ। brahmarṣe kiñcid-āścaryam-asti dṛṣṭaṃ tvayānagha ॥12-340-7॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; कृतक्षणम् (kṛtakṣaṇam) - having performed the rite; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - seated; पर्यपृच्छत् (paryapṛcchat) - asked; शचीपतिः (śacīpatiḥ) - the lord of Śacī (Indra); ब्रह्मर्षे (brahmarṣe) - O Brahmarṣi; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; आश्चर्यम् (āścaryam) - wonder; अस्ति (asti) - is; दृष्टम् (dṛṣṭam) - seen; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(Him having performed the rite, seated, asked the lord of Śacī. O Brahmarṣi, is any wonder seen by you, O sinless one? (12-340-7))
The lord of Śacī (Indra) asked him, who was seated after performing the rite: "O Brahmarṣi, O sinless one, have you seen anything wonderful?" (12-340-7)
यथा त्वमपि विप्रर्षे त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम्। जातकौतूहलो नित्यं सिद्धश्चरसि साक्षिवत् ॥१२-३४०-८॥
yathā tvam api viprarṣe trailokyaṃ sacarācaram। jātakautūhalo nityaṃ siddhaś carasi sākṣivat ॥12-340-8॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; like; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; even; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O sage among Brāhmaṇas; त्रैलोक्यं (trailokyam) - the three worlds; सचराचरम् (sacarācaram) - with moving and unmoving beings; जातकौतूहलः (jātakautūhalaḥ) - one whose curiosity has arisen; नित्यं (nityam) - always; सिद्धः (siddhaḥ) - perfected one; accomplished; चरसि (carasi) - you move; you go; साक्षिवत् (sākṣivat) - like a witness;]
(As you also, O sage among Brāhmaṇas, always move in the three worlds with moving and unmoving beings, with curiosity arisen, perfected one, like a witness.)
Just as you, O sage among Brāhmaṇas, always roam the three worlds of moving and unmoving beings, ever curious and accomplished, like a witness. (12-340-8)
न ह्यस्त्यविदितं लोके देवर्षे तव किञ्चन। श्रुतं वाप्यनुभूतं वा दृष्टं वा कथयस्व मे ॥१२-३४०-९॥
na hy asty aviditaṃ loke devarṣe tava kiñcana। śrutaṃ vā api anubhūtaṃ vā dṛṣṭaṃ vā kathayasva me ॥12-340-9॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्ति (asti) - is; अविदितं (aviditaṃ) - unknown; लोके (loke) - in the world; देवर्षे (devarṣe) - O sage among the gods; तव (tava) - to you; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; श्रुतं (śrutaṃ) - heard; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; अनुभूतं (anubhūtaṃ) - experienced; वा (vā) - or; दृष्टं (dṛṣṭaṃ) - seen; वा (vā) - or; कथयस्व (kathayasva) - please tell; मे (me) - to me;]
(Not indeed is unknown in the world, O sage among the gods, to you anything; heard or also experienced or seen or please tell to me.)
O sage among the gods, there is nothing in the world unknown to you; whether it is heard, experienced, or seen, please tell me about it. (12-340-9)
तस्मै राजन्सुरेन्द्राय नारदो वदतां वरः। आसीनायोपपन्नाय प्रोक्तवान्विपुलां कथाम् ॥१२-३४०-१०॥
tasmai rājansurendrāya nārado vadatāṃ varaḥ। āsīnāyopapannāya proktavānvipulāṃ kathām ॥12-340-10॥
[तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सुरेन्द्राय (surendrāya) - to the lord of the gods; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; वदतां (vadatām) - of speakers; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; आसीनाय (āsīnāya) - to the seated; उपपन्नाय (upapannāya) - to the deserving; प्रोक्तवान् (proktavān) - spoke; विपुलां (vipulām) - extensive; कथाम् (kathām) - story;]
(To him, O king, to the lord of the gods, Nārada, the best of speakers, to the seated, to the deserving, spoke an extensive story.)
O king, to the lord of the gods, Nārada, the best of speakers, while he was seated and deserving, narrated an extensive story. (12-340-10)
यथा येन च कल्पेन स तस्मै द्विजसत्तमः। कथां कथितवान्पृष्टस्तथा त्वमपि मे शृणु ॥१२-३४०-११॥
yathā yena ca kalpena sa tasmai dvijasattamaḥ। kathāṃ kathitavān pṛṣṭas tathā tvam api me śṛṇu ॥12-340-11॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in what manner; येन (yena) - by whom; by which; च (ca) - and; कल्पेन (kalpena) - by method; by manner; स (sa) - he; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; द्विजसत्तमः (dvijasattamaḥ) - best among twice-born; best Brāhmaṇa; कथां (kathām) - story; tale; कथितवान् (kathitavān) - told; narrated; पृष्टः (pṛṣṭaḥ) - asked; questioned; तथा (tathā) - so; in that manner; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; even; मे (me) - to me; my; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; hear;]
(As by whom and by what method he, the best among twice-born, told the story when asked, so you also listen to me.)
Just as the best of the twice-born told the story by the method he was asked, so now you also listen to me. (12-340-11)
