Bhishma said.
आसीत्किल कुरुश्रेष्ठ महापद्मे पुरोत्तमे। गङ्गाया दक्षिणे तीरे कश्चिद्विप्रः समाहितः ॥१२-३४१-१॥
āsīt kila kuruśreṣṭha mahāpadme purottame। gaṅgāyā dakṣiṇe tīre kaścid vipraḥ samāhitaḥ ॥12-341-1॥
[आसीत् (āsīt) - was; किल (kila) - indeed; कुरुश्रेष्ठ (kuruśreṣṭha) - O best of the Kurus; महापद्मे (mahāpadme) - in Mahāpadma; पुरोत्तमे (purottame) - in the foremost city; गङ्गायाः (gaṅgāyāḥ) - of Gaṅgā; दक्षिणे (dakṣiṇe) - on the southern; तीरे (tīre) - bank; कश्चित् (kaścit) - some; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - brāhmaṇa; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - collected; concentrated;]
(Was indeed, O best of the Kurus, in Mahāpadma, in the foremost city, on the southern bank of Gaṅgā, some brāhmaṇa, concentrated.)
O best of the Kurus, there was indeed, in Mahāpadma, the foremost city, on the southern bank of the Gaṅgā, a certain brāhmaṇa who was concentrated. (12-341-1)
सौम्यः सोमान्वये वेदे गताध्वा छिन्नसंशयः। धर्मनित्यो जितक्रोधो नित्यतृप्तो जितेन्द्रियः ॥१२-३४१-२॥
saumyaḥ somānvaye vede gatādhvā chinnasaṃśayaḥ। dharmanityo jitakrodho nityatṛpto jitendriyaḥ ॥12-341-2॥
[सौम्यः (saumyaḥ) - gentle; pleasant; सोम-अन्वये (soma-anvaye) - in the lineage of Soma; वेदे (vede) - in the Veda; गत-अध्वा (gata-adhvā) - one whose path is gone; who has traversed the path; छिन्न-संशयः (chinna-saṃśayaḥ) - one whose doubts are cut off; धर्म-नित्यः (dharma-nityaḥ) - always devoted to dharma; जित-क्रोधः (jita-krodhaḥ) - one who has conquered anger; नित्य-तृप्तः (nitya-tṛptaḥ) - always content; जित-इन्द्रियः (jita-indriyaḥ) - one who has conquered the senses;]
(Gentle; in the lineage of Soma; in the Veda; one whose path is gone; whose doubts are cut off; always devoted to dharma; one who has conquered anger; always content; one who has conquered the senses. (12-341-2))
He is gentle, born in the lineage of Soma, versed in the Veda, one who has traversed the path, whose doubts are dispelled, always devoted to dharma, who has conquered anger, is ever content, and has mastered his senses. (12-341-2)
अहिंसानिरतो नित्यं सत्यः सज्जनसंमतः। न्यायप्राप्तेन वित्तेन स्वेन शीलेन चान्वितः ॥१२-३४१-३॥
ahiṁsā-nirato nityaṁ satyaḥ sajjana-saṁmataḥ। nyāya-prāptena vittena svena śīlena ca-anvitaḥ ॥12-341-3॥
[अहिंसा (ahiṁsā) - non-injury; निरतः (nirataḥ) - engaged; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; सत्यः (satyaḥ) - truthful; सज्जन (sajjana) - good people; संमतः (saṁmataḥ) - approved; न्याय (nyāya) - justice; प्राप्तेन (prāptena) - obtained; वित्तेन (vittena) - by wealth; स्वेन (svena) - by one's own; शीलेन (śīlena) - by character; च (ca) - and; अन्वितः (anvitaḥ) - endowed;]
(Engaged in non-injury always, truthful, approved by good people, endowed with wealth obtained by justice, by one's own character and;)
He is always engaged in non-injury, truthful, esteemed by good people, endowed with wealth acquired justly, and with his own character. (12-341-3)
ज्ञातिसम्बन्धिविपुले मित्रापाश्रयसंमते। कुले महति विख्याते विशिष्टां वृत्तिमास्थितः ॥१२-३४१-४॥
jñātisambandhivipule mitrāpāśrayasaṃmate। kule mahati vikhyāte viśiṣṭāṃ vṛttimāsthitaḥ ॥12-341-4॥
[ज्ञाति (jñāti) - relative; kinsman; सम्बन्धि (sambandhi) - connected; related; विपुले (vipule) - abundant; great; मित्र (mitra) - friend; अपाश्रय (apāśraya) - support; refuge; संमते (saṃmate) - approved; agreed; कुले (kule) - in family; in lineage; महति (mahati) - great; large; विख्याते (vikhyāte) - famous; renowned; विशिष्टां (viśiṣṭāṃ) - distinguished; special; वृत्तिम् (vṛttim) - conduct; way of life; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - adopted; undertaken;]
(Having abundant relatives and connections, approved by the support of friends, in a great and renowned family, he adopted a distinguished conduct.)
He, possessing abundant relatives and connections, esteemed by the support of friends, belonging to a great and famous family, adopted a distinguished way of life. (12-341-4)
स पुत्रान्बहुलान्दृष्ट्वा विपुले कर्मणि स्थितः। कुलधर्माश्रितो राजन्धर्मचर्यापरोऽभवत् ॥१२-३४१-५॥
sa putrān bahulān dṛṣṭvā vipule karmaṇi sthitaḥ। kuladharmāśrito rājann dharmacaryāparo'bhavat ॥12-341-5॥
[स (sa) - he; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons (accusative plural); बहुलान् (bahulān) - many; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; विपुले (vipule) - vast; कर्मणि (karmaṇi) - in action (locative singular); स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing; कुलधर्माश्रितः (kuladharmāśritaḥ) - resorted to family duty; राजन् (rājan) - O king; धर्मचर्यापरः (dharmacaryāparaḥ) - devoted to the practice of dharma; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(He, having seen many sons, standing in vast action, resorted to family duty, O king, became devoted to the practice of dharma.)
O king, having seen his many sons engaged in great deeds, he, adhering to the family duty, became devoted to the practice of dharma. (12-341-5)
ततः स धर्मं वेदोक्तं यथाशास्त्रोक्तमेव च। शिष्टाचीर्णं च धर्मं च त्रिविधं चिन्त्य चेतसा ॥१२-३४१-६॥
tataḥ sa dharmaṃ vedoktaṃ yathāśāstroktameva ca। śiṣṭācīrṇaṃ ca dharmaṃ ca trividhaṃ cintya cetasā ॥12-341-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; स (sa) - he; that; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - duty; righteousness; वेदोक्तं (vedoktaṃ) - declared in the Veda; यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; शास्त्र (śāstra) - treatise; scripture; उक्तम् (uktam) - said; declared; एव (eva) - indeed; only; च (ca) - and; शिष्ट (śiṣṭa) - the learned; the good; आचीर्णं (ācīrṇaṃ) - practiced; observed; च (ca) - and; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - duty; righteousness; च (ca) - and; त्रिविधं (trividhaṃ) - threefold; चिन्त्य (cintya) - to be considered; to be reflected upon; चेतसा (cetasā) - by the mind; with the mind;]
(Then he, the duty declared in the Veda, as said in the treatise indeed and, the duty practiced by the learned and duty and threefold to be considered by the mind.)
Then, one should consider with the mind the threefold duty: that declared in the Veda, as stated in the treatises, and that practiced by the learned. (12-341-6)
किं नु मे स्याच्छुभं कृत्वा किं क्षमं किं परायणम्। इत्येवं खिद्यते नित्यं न च याति विनिश्चयम् ॥१२-३४१-७॥
kiṁ nu me syācchubhaṁ kṛtvā kiṁ kṣamaṁ kiṁ parāyaṇam। ityevaṁ khidyate nityaṁ na ca yāti viniścayam ॥12-341-7॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; स्यात् (syāt) - might be; शुभं (śubham) - auspicious; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; किं (kiṁ) - what; क्षमं (kṣamam) - proper; किं (kiṁ) - what; परायणम् (parāyaṇam) - supreme goal; इति (iti) - thus; एवं (evaṁ) - so; खिद्यते (khidyate) - is afflicted; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; याति (yāti) - goes; विनिश्चयम् (viniścayam) - certainty;]
(What indeed to me might be auspicious having done, what proper, what supreme goal? Thus so is afflicted always, and not goes to certainty. (12-341-7))
One is always afflicted, thinking, "What indeed might be auspicious for me to do? What is proper? What is the supreme goal?" and never comes to a definite conclusion. (12-341-7)
तस्यैवं खिद्यमानस्य धर्मं परममास्थितः। कदाचिदतिथिः प्राप्तो ब्राह्मणः सुसमाहितः ॥१२-३४१-८॥
tasyaivaṃ khidyamānasya dharmaṃ paramamāsthitaḥ। kadācidatithiḥ prāpto brāhmaṇaḥ susamāhitaḥ ॥12-341-8॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; खिद्यमानस्य (khidyamānasya) - of the one being afflicted; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - duty; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - having resorted to; कदाचित् (kadācit) - at some time; अतिथिः (atithiḥ) - guest; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - arrived; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; सुसमाहितः (susamāhitaḥ) - well-composed;]
(Of him, thus, of the one being afflicted, duty, supreme, having resorted to; at some time, guest, arrived, brāhmaṇa, well-composed.)
Thus, while he was afflicted, having resorted to the supreme duty, at some time a well-composed brāhmaṇa guest arrived. (12-341-8)
स तस्मै सत्क्रियां चक्रे क्रियायुक्तेन हेतुना। विश्रान्तं चैनमासीनमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१२-३४१-९॥
sa tasmai satkriyāṁ cakre kriyāyuktena hetunā। viśrāntaṁ ca enam āsīnam idaṁ vacanam abravīt ॥12-341-9॥
[स (sa) - he; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; सत्क्रियां (satkriyām) - honourable act; चक्रे (cakre) - performed; क्रियायुक्तेन (kriyāyuktena) - with one endowed with action; हेतुना (hetunā) - with motive; विश्रान्तं (viśrāntam) - rested; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - seated; इदं (idaṁ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(He to him honourable act performed with one endowed with action with motive; rested and him seated this speech spoke.)
He performed an honourable act for him with a purposeful motive; and when he was rested and seated, he spoke these words to him. (12-341-9)
