The brāhmaṇa said.
समुत्पन्नाभिधानोऽस्मि वाङ्माधुर्येण तेऽनघ। मित्रतामभिपन्नस्त्वां किञ्चिद्वक्ष्यामि तच्छृणु ॥१२-३४२-१॥
samutpannābhidhāno'smi vāṅmādhuryeṇa te'nagha। mitratām abhipannas tvāṃ kiñcid vakṣyāmi tac chṛṇu ॥12-342-1॥
[समुत्पन्न (samutpanna) - arisen; अभिधानः (abhidhānaḥ) - name; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; वाक् (vāk) - speech; माधुर्येण (mādhuryeṇa) - by sweetness; ते (te) - your; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; मित्रताम् (mitratām) - friendship; अभिपन्नः (abhipannaḥ) - having attained; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - something; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I will say; तत् (tat) - that; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear;]
(Arisen name I am, by sweetness of speech, your, O sinless one; friendship having attained, you, something, I will say, that, hear.)
O sinless one, I am called 'Arisen' because of the sweetness of your speech; having attained your friendship, I will say something to you—listen to that. (12-342-1)
गृहस्थधर्मं विप्रेन्द्र कृत्वा पुत्रगतं त्वहम्। धर्मं परमकं कुर्यां को हि मार्गो भवेद्द्विज ॥१२-३४२-२॥
gṛhasthadharmaṃ viprendra kṛtvā putragataṃ tv aham। dharmaṃ paramakaṃ kuryāṃ ko hi mārgo bhaved dvija ॥12-342-2॥
[गृहस्थधर्मं (gṛhasthadharmaṃ) - householder's duty; विप्रेन्द्र (viprendra) - O best of Brāhmaṇas; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having performed; पुत्रगतं (putragataṃ) - gone to the son; त्व (tv) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - duty; परमकं (paramakaṃ) - supreme; कुर्यां (kuryāṃ) - should do; को (ko) - which; हि (hi) - indeed; मार्गः (mārgaḥ) - path; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; द्विज (dvija) - O twice-born;]
(Having performed the householder's duty, O best of Brāhmaṇas, I have become one whose son has taken over. What supreme duty should I do? Which indeed would be the path, O twice-born? (12-342-2))
O best of Brāhmaṇas, having fulfilled the duties of a householder and passed them on to my son, what supreme duty should I now perform? O twice-born, which indeed is the path I should follow? (12-342-2)
अहमात्मानमात्मस्थमेक एवात्मनि स्थितः। कर्तुं काङ्क्षामि नेच्छामि बद्धः साधारणैर्गुणैः ॥१२-३४२-३॥
aham ātmānam ātmastham eka eva ātmani sthitaḥ। kartuṃ kāṅkṣāmi necchāmi baddhaḥ sādhāraṇair guṇaiḥ ॥12-342-3॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; आत्मस्थम् (ātmastham) - situated in the self; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; एव (eva) - indeed; आत्मनि (ātmani) - in the self; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - situated; कर्तुम् (kartuṃ) - to do; काङ्क्षामि (kāṅkṣāmi) - I desire; न (na) - not; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; बद्धः (baddhaḥ) - bound; साधारणैः (sādhāraṇaiḥ) - by common; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - qualities;]
(I self situated in the self one indeed in the self situated; to do I desire not I wish bound by common qualities.)
I, being one, established in the self and situated in the self, desire to act but do not wish, being bound by common qualities. (12-342-3)
यावदेवानतीतं मे वयः पुत्रफलाश्रितम्। तावदिच्छामि पाथेयमादातुं पारलौकिकम् ॥१२-३४२-४॥
yāvad-evānatītaṃ me vayaḥ putraphalāśritam। tāvad-icchāmi pātheyam-ādātuṃ pāralaukikam ॥12-342-4॥
[यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; एव (eva) - indeed; अनतीतम् (anatītam) - not passed; मे (me) - my; वयः (vayaḥ) - age; पुत्रफलाश्रितम् (putraphalāśritam) - dependent on the fruit (result) of a son; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; पाथेयम् (pātheyam) - provision for a journey; आदातुम् (ādātum) - to take; पारलौकिकम् (pāralaukikam) - pertaining to the other world;]
(As long indeed as my age, not passed, is dependent on the fruit of a son, so long I desire to take provision for a journey pertaining to the other world.)
As long as my life, which is still dependent on the results of having a son, continues, I wish to acquire provisions for the journey to the next world. (12-342-4)
अस्मिन्हि लोकसन्ताने परं पारमभीप्सतः। उत्पन्ना मे मतिरियं कुतो धर्ममयः प्लवः ॥१२-३४२-५॥
asmin hi lokasantāne paraṃ pāram abhīpsataḥ। utpannā me matir iyaṃ kuto dharmamayaḥ plavaḥ ॥12-342-5॥
[अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; हि (hi) - indeed; लोकसन्ताने (lokasantāne) - in the succession of worlds; परम् (param) - the highest; पारम् (pāram) - the further shore; अभीप्सतः (abhīpsataḥ) - desiring to reach; उत्पन्ना (utpannā) - arisen; मे (me) - to me; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought; इयम् (iyam) - this; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; धर्ममयः (dharmamayaḥ) - consisting of dharma; प्लवः (plavaḥ) - raft;]
(In this indeed succession of worlds, to one desiring to reach the highest shore, arisen to me this thought: from where is the raft consisting of dharma?)
Indeed, in this succession of worlds, as I desire to reach the highest shore, this thought has arisen in me: from where is the raft made of dharma? (12-342-5)
समुह्यमानानि निशम्य लोके; निर्यात्यमानानि च सात्त्विकानि। दृष्ट्वा च धर्मध्वजकेतुमालां; प्रकीर्यमाणामुपरि प्रजानाम् ॥१२-३४२-६॥
samuhyamānāni niśamya loke; niryātyamānāni ca sāttvikāni। dṛṣṭvā ca dharmadhvajaketumālāṃ; prakīryamāṇām upari prajānām ॥12-342-6॥
[समुह्यमानानि (samuhyamānāni) - being gathered together; निशम्य (niśamya) - having heard; लोके (loke) - in the world; निर्यात्यमानानि (niryātyamānāni) - being sent out; च (ca) - and; सात्त्विकानि (sāttvikāni) - pure; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; च (ca) - and; धर्मध्वजकेतुमालां (dharmadhvajaketumālāṃ) - garland of banners of dharma; प्रकीर्यमाणाम् (prakīryamāṇām) - being scattered; उपरि (upari) - above; प्रजानाम् (prajānām) - of the people;]
(Being gathered together, having heard in the world; being sent out and pure. Having seen also the garland of banners of dharma, being scattered above the people. (12-342-6))
Having heard in the world of those being gathered together and the pure ones being sent out, and having seen the garland of dharma banners being scattered above the people. (12-342-6)
न मे मनो रज्यति भोगकाले; दृष्ट्वा यतीन्प्रार्थयतः परत्र। तेनातिथे बुद्धिबलाश्रयेण; धर्मार्थतत्त्वे विनियुङ्क्ष्व मां त्वम् ॥१२-३४२-७॥
na me mano rajyati bhogakāle; dṛṣṭvā yatīnprārthayataḥ paratra. tenātithe buddhibalāśrayeṇa; dharmārthatattve viniyuṅkṣva māṃ tvam ॥12-342-7॥
[न (na) - not; मे (me) - my; मनो (mano) - mind; रज्यति (rajyati) - delights; भोगकाले (bhogakāle) - in the time of enjoyment; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; यतीन् (yatīn) - ascetics; प्रार्थयतः (prārthayataḥ) - praying; परत्र (paratra) - in the hereafter; तेन (tena) - therefore; अतिथे (atithe) - O guest; बुद्धिबलाश्रयेण (buddhibalāśrayeṇa) - by the support of the strength of intellect; धर्मार्थतत्त्वे (dharmārthatattve) - in the essence of dharma and artha; विनियुङ्क्ष्व (viniyuṅkṣva) - engage; मां (māṃ) - me; त्वम् (tvam) - you;]
(Not my mind delights in the time of enjoyment; having seen ascetics praying in the hereafter. Therefore, O guest, by the support of the strength of intellect, in the essence of dharma and artha, engage me, you. (12-342-7))
My mind does not delight in times of enjoyment, having seen ascetics praying for the hereafter. Therefore, O guest, with the support of intellectual strength, engage me in the essence of dharma and artha. (12-342-7)
भीष्म उवाच॥

Bhishma said.
सोऽतिथिर्वचनं तस्य श्रुत्वा धर्माभिलाषिणः। प्रोवाच वचनं श्लक्ष्णं प्राज्ञो मधुरया गिरा ॥१२-३४२-८॥
so'tithir vacanaṃ tasya śrutvā dharmābhilāṣiṇaḥ। provāca vacanaṃ ślakṣṇaṃ prājño madhurayā girā ॥12-342-8॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अतिथि: (atithiḥ) - guest; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; तस्य (tasya) - of him; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; धर्म-अभिलाषिणः (dharma-abhilāṣiṇaḥ) - of the one desiring dharma; प्रोवाच (provāca) - spoke; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; श्लक्ष्णम् (ślakṣṇam) - gentle; प्राज्ञः (prājñaḥ) - wise; मधुरया (madhurayā) - with sweet; गिरा (girā) - voice;]
(He, the guest, having heard the speech of him who desired dharma, the wise one spoke gentle speech with a sweet voice.)
The guest, upon hearing the words of the one who desired righteousness, the wise man spoke gentle words in a sweet voice. (12-342-8)
अहमप्यत्र मुह्यामि ममाप्येष मनोरथः। न च संनिश्चयं यामि बहुद्वारे त्रिविष्टपे ॥१२-३४२-९॥
aham apy atra muhyāmi mamāpy eṣa manorathaḥ। na ca saṃniścayaṃ yāmi bahudvāre triviṣṭape ॥12-342-9॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; अपि (api) - also; अत्र (atra) - here; मुह्यामि (muhyāmi) - am confused; मम (mama) - my; अपि (api) - also; एष (eṣa) - this; मनोरथः (manorathaḥ) - desire; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; संनिश्चयम् (saṃniścayam) - certainty; यामि (yāmi) - I reach; बहुद्वारे (bahudvāre) - with many doors; त्रिविष्टपे (triviṣṭape) - in heaven;]
(I also here am confused; my also this desire; not and certainty I reach; with many doors in heaven;)
Even I am confused here; this desire is also mine; I do not attain certainty in the heaven with many doors. (12-342-9)
केचिन्मोक्षं प्रशंसन्ति केचिद्यज्ञफलं द्विजाः। वानप्रस्थाश्रमं केचिद्गार्हस्थ्यं केचिदाश्रिताः ॥१२-३४२-१०॥
kecinmokṣaṃ praśaṃsanti kecidyajñaphalaṃ dvijāḥ। vānaprasthāśramaṃ kecidgārhasthyaṃ kecidāśritāḥ ॥12-342-10॥
[केचित् (kecit) - some; मोक्षं (mokṣam) - liberation; प्रशंसन्ति (praśaṃsanti) - praise; केचित् (kecit) - some; यज्ञफलं (yajñaphalam) - fruit of sacrifice; द्विजाः (dvijāḥ) - twice-born; वानप्रस्थाश्रमं (vānaprasthāśramam) - hermitage stage; केचित् (kecit) - some; गार्हस्थ्यं (gārhasthyam) - householder's life; केचित् (kecit) - some; आश्रिताः (āśritāḥ) - have resorted to;]
(Some praise liberation; some, the fruit of sacrifice, the twice-born; some have resorted to the hermitage stage; some to the householder's life.)
Some praise liberation, some of the twice-born praise the fruit of sacrifice; some have adopted the hermitage stage, while others have taken to the life of a householder. (12-342-10)
राजधर्माश्रयं केचित्केचिदात्मफलाश्रयम्। गुरुचर्याश्रयं केचित्केचिद्वाक्यं यमाश्रयम् ॥१२-३४२-११॥
rājadharmāśrayaṃ kecit kecid ātmaphalāśrayam। gurucaryāśrayaṃ kecit kecid vākyaṃ yamāśrayam ॥12-342-11॥
[राजधर्माश्रयं (rājadharmāśrayam) - having recourse to royal duty; केचित् (kecit) - some; केचित् (kecit) - some; आत्मफलाश्रयम् (ātmaphalāśrayam) - having recourse to the fruit of the self; गुरुचर्याश्रयं (gurucaryāśrayam) - having recourse to the conduct of the teacher; केचित् (kecit) - some; केचित् (kecit) - some; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - word; यमाश्रयम् (yamāśrayam) - having recourse to restraint;]
(Some having recourse to royal duty, some having recourse to the fruit of the self; some having recourse to the conduct of the teacher, some the word having recourse to restraint. (12-342-11))
Some rely on royal duties, some on the fruits of the self; some follow the conduct of the teacher, and some rely on words based on restraint. (12-342-11)
मातरं पितरं केचिच्छुश्रूषन्तो दिवं गताः। अहिंसया परे स्वर्गं सत्येन च तथा परे ॥१२-३४२-१२॥
mātaraṃ pitaraṃ kecicchuśrūṣanto divaṃ gatāḥ। ahiṃsayā pare svargaṃ satyena ca tathā pare ॥12-342-12॥
[मातरं (mātaram) - mother; (accusative singular); पितरं (pitaram) - father; (accusative singular); केचित् (kecit) - some; (nominative plural); शुश्रूषन्तः (śuśrūṣantaḥ) - serving; (nominative plural); दिवं (divam) - heaven; (accusative singular); गताः (gatāḥ) - have gone; (nominative plural); अहिंसया (ahiṃsayā) - by non-violence; (instrumental singular); परे (pare) - others; (nominative plural); स्वर्गं (svargam) - heaven; (accusative singular); सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; (instrumental singular); च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - likewise; परे (pare) - others; (nominative plural);]
(Some, serving mother and father, have gone to heaven. Others by non-violence, others to heaven by truth and likewise others.)
Some, by serving their mother and father, have attained heaven; others, by non-violence; others, by truth, and likewise others. (12-342-12)
आहवेऽभिमुखाः केचिन्निहताः स्विद्दिवं गताः। केचिदुञ्छव्रतैः सिद्धाः स्वर्गमार्गसमाश्रिताः ॥१२-३४२-१३॥
āhave'bhimukhāḥ kecinnihatāḥ sviddivaṃ gatāḥ। keciduñchavrataiḥ siddhāḥ svargamārgasamāśritāḥ ॥12-342-13॥
[आहवे (āhave) - in battle; अभिमुखाः (abhimukhāḥ) - facing (the enemy); केचित् (kecit) - some; निहताः (nihatāḥ) - slain; स्वित् (svid) - perhaps; दिवं (divaṃ) - to heaven; गताः (gatāḥ) - gone; केचित् (kecit) - some; उञ्छव्रतैः (uñchavrataiḥ) - by those with the vow of gleaning; सिद्धाः (siddhāḥ) - perfected ones; स्वर्गमार्ग (svargamārga) - the path to heaven; समाश्रिताः (samāśritāḥ) - having resorted to;]
(In battle, facing (the enemy), some slain perhaps to heaven gone; some by those with the vow of gleaning perfected ones, the path to heaven having resorted to.)
Some, facing the enemy in battle, were slain and perhaps have gone to heaven; others, perfected by the vow of gleaning, have resorted to the path to heaven. (12-342-13)
केचिदध्ययने युक्ता वेदव्रतपराः शुभाः। बुद्धिमन्तो गताः स्वर्गं तुष्टात्मानो जितेन्द्रियाः ॥१२-३४२-१४॥
kecidadhyayane yuktā vedavrataparāḥ śubhāḥ। buddhimanto gatāḥ svargaṃ tuṣṭātmāno jitendriyāḥ ॥12-342-14॥
[केचित् (kecit) - some; अध्ययने (adhyayane) - in study; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - engaged; वेदव्रतपराः (vedavrataparāḥ) - devoted to Vedic vows; शुभाः (śubhāḥ) - auspicious; बुद्धिमन्तः (buddhimantaḥ) - wise; गताः (gatāḥ) - gone; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - to heaven; तुष्टात्मानः (tuṣṭātmānaḥ) - content in self; जितेन्द्रियाः (jitendriyāḥ) - having conquered the senses;]
(Some, engaged in study, devoted to Vedic vows, auspicious, wise, having gone to heaven, content in self, having conquered the senses.)
Some, engaged in study and devoted to Vedic vows, being auspicious and wise, have attained heaven, being content in themselves and having conquered their senses. (12-342-14)
आर्जवेनापरे युक्ता निहतानार्जवैर्जनैः। ऋजवो नाकपृष्ठे वै शुद्धात्मानः प्रतिष्ठिताः ॥१२-३४२-१५॥
ārjavenāpare yuktā nihatānārjavair janaiḥ। ṛjavo nākapṛṣṭhe vai śuddhātmānaḥ pratiṣṭhitāḥ ॥12-342-15॥
[आर्जवेन (ārjavena) - by honesty; अपरे (apare) - others; युक्ता (yuktā) - engaged; निहतान् (nihatān) - slain; अार्जवैः (ārjavaiḥ) - by the honest; जनैः (janaiḥ) - by people; ऋजवः (ṛjavaḥ) - the honest ones; नाकपृष्ठे (nākapṛṣṭhe) - on the back of heaven; वै (vai) - indeed; शुद्धात्मानः (śuddhātmānaḥ) - those with pure selves; प्रतिष्ठिताः (pratiṣṭhitāḥ) - established;]
(By honesty, others engaged (are) slain by the honest people. The honest ones, indeed, with pure selves, are established on the back of heaven. (12-342-15))
Others, through honesty, are overcome by honest people. The truly honest, with pure souls, are established in the highest heaven. (12-342-15)
एवं बहुविधैर्लोके धर्मद्वारैरनावृतैः। ममापि मतिराविग्ना मेघलेखेव वायुना ॥१२-३४२-१६॥
evaṃ bahuvidhairloke dharmadvārairanāvṛtaiḥ। mamāpi matirāvignā meghalekheva vāyunā ॥12-342-16॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; in this way; बहुविधैः (bahuvidhaiḥ) - by many kinds; by various; लोके (loke) - in the world; धर्मद्वारैः (dharmadvāraiḥ) - by the doors (means) of dharma; by the gates of righteousness; अनावृतैः (anāvṛtaiḥ) - uncovered; unobstructed; मम (mama) - my; अपि (api) - also; even; मतिः (matiḥ) - mind; intellect; आविग्ना (āvigṇā) - disturbed; agitated; मेघलेखा (meghalekha) - cloud-streak; line of cloud; इव (iva) - like; as if; वायुना (vāyunā) - by the wind;]
(Thus, by many kinds in the world, by the unobstructed doors of dharma, my mind also is disturbed like a cloud-streak by the wind.)
In this way, though there are many unobstructed doors of dharma in the world, even my mind is disturbed, like a streak of cloud by the wind. (12-342-16)
