उपदेशं तु ते विप्र करिष्येऽहं यथागमम्। गुरुणा मे यथाख्यातमर्थतस्तच्च मे शृणु ॥१२-३४३-१॥
upadeśaṃ tu te vipra kariṣye'haṃ yathāgamam। guruṇā me yathākhyātam-arthatas-tac ca me śṛṇu ॥12-343-1॥
[उपदेशं (upadeśam) - instruction; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - to you; विप्र (vipra) - Brāhmaṇa; करिष्ये (kariṣye) - I shall do; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; यथागमम् (yathāgamam) - according to the scripture; गुरुणा (guruṇā) - by the teacher; मे (me) - to me; यथाख्यातम् (yathākhyātam) - as declared; अर्थतस् (arthatas) - in essence; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - to me; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear;]
(Instruction but to you, Brāhmaṇa, I shall do, I, according to the scripture. By the teacher to me as declared in essence, that and to me hear. (12-343-1))
O Brāhmaṇa, I shall give you instruction according to the scripture. Hear from me what has been declared in essence by my teacher. (12-343-1)
यत्र पूर्वाभिसर्गेण धर्मचक्रं प्रवर्तितम्। नैमिषे गोमतीतीरे तत्र नागाह्वयं पुरम् ॥१२-३४३-२॥
yatra pūrvābhisargeṇa dharmacakraṃ pravartitam। naimiṣe gomatītīre tatra nāgāhvayaṃ puram ॥12-343-2॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; पूर्वाभिसर्गेण (pūrvābhisargeṇa) - by the former sending forth; धर्मचक्रं (dharmacakram) - wheel of dharma; प्रवर्तितम् (pravartitam) - set in motion; नैमिषे (naimiṣe) - in Naimisha; गोमतीतीरे (gomatītīre) - on the bank of Gomati; तत्र (tatra) - there; नागाह्वयं (nāgāhvayam) - called Nāga; पुरम् (puram) - city;]

samagraistridaśaistatra iṣṭamāsīddvijarṣabha. yatrendrātikramaṃ cakre māndhātā rājasattamaḥ ॥12-343-3॥
[समग्रैः (samagraiḥ) - with all; त्रिदशैः (tridaśaiḥ) - by the thirty gods; तत्र (tatra) - there; इष्टम् (iṣṭam) - sacrifice; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; द्विजर्षभ (dvijarṣabha) - O best of twice-born; यत्र (yatra) - where; इन्द्रात् (indrāt) - than Indra; अतिक्रमम् (atikramam) - surpassing; चक्रे (cakre) - did; मान्धाता (māndhātā) - Māndhātā; राजसत्तमः (rājasattamaḥ) - O best of kings;]
(With all the thirty gods there, the sacrifice was, O best of twice-born; where Māndhātā, O best of kings, did surpass Indra.)

कृताधिवासो धर्मात्मा तत्र चक्षुःश्रवा महान्। पद्मनाभो महाभागः पद्म इत्येव विश्रुतः ॥१२-३४३-४॥
kṛtādhivāso dharmātmā tatra cakṣuḥśravā mahān। padmanābho mahābhāgaḥ padma ityeva viśrutaḥ ॥12-343-4॥
[कृताधिवासः (kṛtādhivāsaḥ) - having established residence; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - whose essence is dharma; तत्र (tatra) - there; चक्षुःश्रवाः (cakṣuḥśravāḥ) - famed for sight and hearing; महान् (mahān) - great; पद्मनाभः (padmanābhaḥ) - lotus-naveled; महाभागः (mahābhāgaḥ) - most fortunate; पद्मः (padmaḥ) - lotus; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - well-known;]
(Having established residence, whose essence is dharma, there, famed for sight and hearing, great, lotus-naveled, most fortunate, lotus, thus indeed well-known.)
There, the great and most fortunate Padmanabha, whose essence is dharma and who is famed for his sight and hearing, having established residence, is well-known as 'Padma' (the Lotus). (12-343-4)
स वाचा कर्मणा चैव मनसा च द्विजर्षभ। प्रसादयति भूतानि त्रिविधे वर्त्मनि स्थितः ॥१२-३४३-५॥
sa vācā karmaṇā caiva manasā ca dvijarṣabha। prasādayati bhūtāni trividhe vartmani sthitaḥ ॥12-343-5॥
[स (sa) - he; वाचा (vācā) - by speech; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; च (ca) - and; द्विजर्षभ (dvijarṣabha) - O best of twice-born; प्रसादयति (prasādayati) - pleases; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; त्रिविधे (trividhe) - in the threefold; वर्त्मनि (vartmani) - path; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - situated;]
(He, by speech, by action, and indeed by mind, and O best of twice-born, pleases beings, situated in the threefold path.)
O best of the twice-born, he who is established in the threefold path pleases all beings by speech, action, and mind. (12-343-5)
साम्ना दानेन भेदेन दण्डेनेति चतुर्विधम्। विषमस्थं जनं स्वं च चक्षुर्ध्यानेन रक्षति ॥१२-३४३-६॥
sāmnā dānena bhedena daṇḍeneti caturvidham। viṣamasthaṃ janaṃ svaṃ ca cakṣur-dhyānena rakṣati ॥12-343-6॥
[साम्ना (sāmnā) - by conciliation; दानेन (dānena) - by giving; भेदेन (bhedena) - by division; दण्डेन (daṇḍena) - by punishment; इति (iti) - thus; चतुर्विधम् (caturvidham) - fourfold; विषमस्थम् (viṣamastham) - placed in difficulty; जनम् (janam) - person; स्वम् (svam) - one's own; च (ca) - and; चक्षुः (cakṣuḥ) - eye; ध्यानेन (dhyānena) - by attention; रक्षति (rakṣati) - protects;]
(By conciliation, by giving, by division, by punishment—thus fourfold; a person placed in difficulty and one's own, the eye protects by attention. (12-343-6))
The eye protects both a person in difficulty and itself by four means—conciliation, giving, division, and punishment—by being attentive. (12-343-6)
तमभिक्रम्य विधिना प्रष्टुमर्हसि काङ्क्षितम्। स ते परमकं धर्मं नमिथ्या दर्शयिष्यति ॥१२-३४३-७॥
tam abhikramya vidhinā praṣṭum arhasi kāṅkṣitam। sa te paramakaṃ dharmaṃ na mithyā darśayiṣyati ॥12-343-7॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अभिक्रम्य (abhikramya) - having approached; विधिना (vidhinā) - according to rule; प्रष्टुम् (praṣṭum) - to ask; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; काङ्क्षितम् (kāṅkṣitam) - desired; सः (sa) - he; ते (te) - to you; परमकम् (paramakam) - supreme; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - dharma; न (na) - not; मिथ्या (mithyā) - falsely; दर्शयिष्यति (darśayiṣyati) - will show;]
(Him having approached according to rule to ask you ought desired. He to you supreme dharma not falsely will show. (12-343-7))
Having approached him according to the proper method, you ought to ask what you desire. He will show you the supreme dharma, not falsely. (12-343-7)
स हि सर्वातिथिर्नागो बुद्धिशास्त्रविशारदः। गुणैरनवमैर्युक्तः समस्तैराभिकामिकैः ॥१२-३४३-८॥
sa hi sarvātithirnāgo buddhiśāstraviśāradaḥ। guṇairanavamairyuktaḥ samastairābhikāmikaiḥ ॥12-343-8॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; सर्वातिथिः (sarvātithiḥ) - all-guests (one who is a guest to all); नागः (nāgaḥ) - Nāga (serpent/elephant, here a name/title); बुद्धि (buddhi) - intellect; शास्त्र (śāstra) - scripture; विशारदः (viśāradaḥ) - expert; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - by virtues; अनवमैः (anavamaiḥ) - unexcelled; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - endowed; समस्तैः (samastaiḥ) - with all; आभिकामिकैः (ābhikāmikaiḥ) - desirable;]
(He indeed all-guests Nāga intellect scripture expert; by virtues unexcelled endowed; with all desirable;)
He, Nāga, who is indeed a guest to all, is an expert in intellect and scriptures; endowed with unexcelled virtues and all desirable qualities. (12-343-8)
प्रकृत्या नित्यसलिलो नित्यमध्ययने रतः। तपोदमाभ्यां संयुक्तो वृत्तेनानवरेण च ॥१२-३४३-९॥
prakṛtyā nityasalilo nityamadhyayane rataḥ। tapodamābhyāṃ saṃyukto vṛttenānavareṇa ca ॥12-343-9॥
[प्रकृत्या (prakṛtyā) - by nature; नित्य (nitya) - always; सलिलः (salilaḥ) - fluid; water-like; नित्य (nitya) - always; अध्ययने (adhyayane) - in study; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged; तपोदमाभ्यां (tapodamābhyāṃ) - with austerity and gift; संयुक्तः (saṃyuktaḥ) - joined; वृत्तेन (vṛttena) - by conduct; अनवरेण (anavareṇa) - uninterrupted; च (ca) - and;]
(By nature always fluid; always engaged in study; joined with austerity and gift; by uninterrupted conduct and;)
By nature ever adaptable, always devoted to study, endowed with both austerity and generosity, and possessing unbroken good conduct. (12-343-9)
यज्वा दानरुचिः क्षान्तो वृत्ते च परमे स्थितः। सत्यवागनसूयुश्च शीलवानभिसंश्रितः ॥१२-३४३-१०॥
yajvā dānaruciḥ kṣānto vṛtte ca parame sthitaḥ। satyavāganasūyuśca śīlavānabhisaṃśritaḥ ॥12-343-10॥
[यज्वा (yajvā) - sacrificer; one who performs yajña; दानरुचिः (dānaruciḥ) - having inclination for giving; क्षान्तः (kṣāntaḥ) - forbearing; patient; वृत्ते (vṛtte) - in conduct; in behaviour; च (ca) - and; परमे (parame) - in supreme; in highest; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - established; abiding; सत्यवाक् (satyavāk) - truth-speaking; one who speaks truth; अनसूयुः (anasūyuḥ) - non-envious; free from envy; च (ca) - and; शीलवान् (śīlavān) - possessing good character; virtuous; अभिसंश्रितः (abhisaṃśritaḥ) - taken refuge; resorted to;]
(Sacrificer; having inclination for giving; forbearing; in conduct and in supreme established; truth-speaking, non-envious and possessing good character, taken refuge; (12-343-10))
One who performs sacrifices, is inclined to giving, is patient, established in supreme conduct, speaks the truth, is free from envy, possesses good character, and has taken refuge; (12-343-10)
शेषान्नभोक्ता वचनानुकूलो; हितार्जवोत्कृष्टकृताकृतज्ञः। अवैरकृद्भूतहिते नियुक्तो; गङ्गाह्रदाम्भोऽभिजनोपपन्नः ॥१२-३४३-११॥
śeṣānnabhoktā vacanānukūlo; hitārjavotkṛṣṭakṛtākṛtajñaḥ. avairakṛdbhūtahite niyukto; gaṅgāhradāmbho'bhijanopapannaḥ ॥12-343-11॥
[शेष-अन्न-भोक्ता (śeṣa-anna-bhoktā) - remnant-food-eater; वचन-अनुकूलः (vacana-anukūlaḥ) - word-obedient; हित-अर्जव-उत्कृष्ट-कृत-अकृतज्ञः (hita-arjava-utkṛṣṭa-kṛta-akṛtajñaḥ) - benefit-honesty-excellent-done-ungrateful; अवैरकृत्-भूत-हिते-नियुक्तः (avairakṛt-bhūta-hite-niyuktaḥ) - enmity-not-done-being-welfare-engaged; गङ्गा-ह्रद-अम्भः-अभिजन-उपपन्नः (gaṅgā-hrada-ambhaḥ-abhijana-upapannaḥ) - Ganga-pool-water-noble-birth-endowed;]
(Remnant-food-eater, obedient to words; benefit-honesty-excellent-done-ungrateful. Not causing enmity, engaged in the welfare of beings; endowed with Ganga-pool-water and noble birth. (12-343-11))
He eats only leftover food, is obedient to commands, excels in honesty and gratitude for good deeds, does not create enmity, is engaged in the welfare of beings, and is endowed with the sanctity of Ganga's waters and noble lineage. (12-343-11)
