ब्राह्मण उवाच॥

[ब्राह्मण (brāhmaṇa) - brāhmaṇa; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(brāhmaṇa said;)
The brāhmaṇa said.
अतिभारोद्यतस्यैव भारापनयनं महत्। पराश्वासकरं वाक्यमिदं मे भवतः श्रुतम् ॥१२-३४४-१॥
atibhārodyatasyaiva bhārāpanayanaṃ mahat। parāśvāsakaraṃ vākyam idaṃ me bhavataḥ śrutam ॥12-344-1॥
[अतिभारोद्यतस्यैव (atibhārodyatasyaiva) - of one who is greatly burdened; indeed; भारापनयनं (bhārāpanayanam) - removal of the burden; महत् (mahat) - great; पराश्वासकरं (parāśvāsakaram) - causing great relief; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - statement; इदं (idaṃ) - this; मे (me) - to me; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - from you; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard;]
(Of one who is greatly burdened indeed, the removal of the burden is great. Causing great relief, this statement I have heard from you.)
For one who is greatly burdened, the removal of the burden is truly great. This statement, which brings great relief, I have heard from you. (12-344-1)
अध्वक्लान्तस्य शयनं स्थानक्लान्तस्य चासनम्। तृषितस्य च पानीयं क्षुधार्तस्य च भोजनम् ॥१२-३४४-२॥
adhvaklāntasya śayanaṃ sthānaklāntasya cāsanam| tṛṣitasya ca pānīyaṃ kṣudhārtasya ca bhojanam ॥12-344-2॥
[अध्वक्लान्तस्य (adhvaklāntasya) - of one wearied by travel; शयनं (śayanaṃ) - bed; स्थानक्लान्तस्य (sthānaklāntasya) - of one wearied by standing; च (ca) - and; आसनम् (āsanam) - seat; तृषितस्य (tṛṣitasya) - of one who is thirsty; च (ca) - and; पानीयं (pānīyaṃ) - water; क्षुधार्तस्य (kṣudhārtasya) - of one afflicted by hunger; च (ca) - and; भोजनम् (bhojanam) - food;]
(Of one wearied by travel, bed; of one wearied by standing, and seat; of one who is thirsty, and water; of one afflicted by hunger, and food.)
A bed for one wearied by travel, a seat for one tired from standing, water for the thirsty, and food for the hungry. (12-344-2)
ईप्सितस्येव सम्प्राप्तिरन्नस्य समयेऽतिथेः। एषितस्यात्मनः काले वृद्धस्येव सुतो यथा ॥१२-३४४-३॥
īpsitasyeva samprāptir annasya samaye'titheḥ। eṣitasya ātmanaḥ kāle vṛddhasyeva suto yathā ॥12-344-3॥
[ईप्सितस्य (īpsitasya) - of the desired; इव (iva) - just as; सम्प्राप्तिः (samprāptiḥ) - attainment; अन्नस्य (annasya) - of food; समये (samaye) - at the time; अतिथेः (atitheḥ) - of a guest; एषितस्य (eṣitasya) - of the sought; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of the self; काले (kāle) - at the time; वृद्धस्य (vṛddhasya) - of an old man; इव (iva) - just as; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(Of the desired just as attainment of food at the time of a guest; of the sought self at the time of an old man just as a son as; (12-344-3))
Just as the attainment of desired food at the time of a guest, so too is the attainment of a sought-after son for an old man at the right time. (12-344-3)
मनसा चिन्तितस्येव प्रीतिस्निग्धस्य दर्शनम्। प्रह्रादयति मां वाक्यं भवता यदुदीरितम् ॥१२-३४४-४॥
manasā cintitasy-eva prīti-snigdhasya darśanam। prahrādayati māṃ vākyaṃ bhavatā yad-udīritam ॥12-344-4॥
[मनसा (manasā) - by the mind; चिन्तितस्य (cintitasya) - of the one who is thought of; इव (iva) - as if; प्रीतिस्निग्धस्य (prīti-snigdhasya) - of one affectionate with love; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - sight; प्रह्रादयति (prahrādayati) - delights; माम् (mām) - me; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - speech; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; यत् (yat) - which; उदीरितम् (udīritam) - uttered;]
(By the mind, of the one who is thought of, as if, of one affectionate with love, sight, delights me; speech by you, which uttered.)
The sight of one who is lovingly remembered in the mind delights me as if I am seeing someone dear; the words spoken by you bring me joy. (12-344-4)
दत्तचक्षुरिवाकाशे पश्यामि विमृशामि च। प्रज्ञानवचनाद्योऽयमुपदेशो हि मे कृतः ॥ बाढमेवं करिष्यामि यथा मां भाषते भवान् ॥१२-३४४-५॥
dattacakṣurivākāśe paśyāmi vimṛśāmi ca। prajñānavacanādyo' yamupadeśo hi me kṛtaḥ ॥ bāḍhamevaṃ kariṣyāmi yathā māṃ bhāṣate bhavān ॥12-344-5॥
[दत्तचक्षुः (dattacakṣuḥ) - having been given sight; इव (iva) - like; as if; आकाशे (ākāśe) - in the sky; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; विमृशामि (vimṛśāmi) - I reflect; I consider; च (ca) - and; प्रज्ञानवचनात् (prajñānavacanāt) - from the speech of wisdom; यः (yaḥ) - which; who; अयम् (ayam) - this; उपदेशः (upadeśaḥ) - instruction; teaching; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; मे (me) - to me; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - has been done; has been given; बाढम् (bāḍham) - certainly; truly; एवम् (evam) - thus; in this way; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I shall do; यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; माम् (mām) - me; भाषते (bhāṣate) - speaks; addresses; भवान् (bhavān) - you; respected one;]
(Having been given sight, as if in the sky, I see and I reflect. From the speech of wisdom, this instruction indeed has been given to me. Certainly, thus I shall do as you speak to me. (12-344-5))
It is as if I have been given sight in the sky; I see and reflect. From your words of wisdom, this instruction has indeed been given to me. Certainly, I will act just as you have spoken to me. (12-344-5)
इहेमां रजनीं साधो निवसस्व मया सह। प्रभाते यास्यति भवान्पर्याश्वस्तः सुखोषितः ॥ असौ हि भगवान्सूर्यो मन्दरश्मिरवाङ्मुखः ॥१२-३४४-६॥
ihemāṃ rajanīṃ sādho nivasasva mayā saha। prabhāte yāsyati bhavān paryāśvastaḥ sukhoṣitaḥ ॥ asau hi bhagavān sūryo mandar-aśmir avāṅmukhaḥ ॥12-344-6॥
[इह (iha) - here; इमां (imām) - this; रजनीं (rajanīṃ) - night; साधो (sādho) - O noble one; निवसस्व (nivasasva) - dwell; मया (mayā) - with me; सह (saha) - together; प्रभाते (prabhāte) - at dawn; यास्यति (yāsyati) - will go; भवान् (bhavān) - you; पर्याश्वस्तः (paryāśvastaḥ) - completely rested; सुखोषितः (sukhoṣitaḥ) - having spent the night happily; असौ (asau) - that; हि (hi) - indeed; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the blessed; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - sun; मन्दरश्मिः (mandar-aśmiḥ) - with gentle rays; अवाङ्मुखः (avāṅmukhaḥ) - turned downward;]
(Here this night, O noble one, dwell with me together; at dawn you will go, you, completely rested, having spent the night happily. That indeed blessed sun, with gentle rays, is turned downward. (12-344-6))
O noble one, stay here with me tonight; in the morning, you may depart, fully rested and having spent the night happily. For now, the blessed sun with gentle rays is setting. (12-344-6)
भीष्म उवाच॥
bhīṣma uvāca॥
[भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhishma; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

Bhishma said.
ततस्तेन कृतातिथ्यः सोऽतिथिः शत्रुसूदन। उवास किल तां रात्रिं सह तेन द्विजेन वै ॥१२-३४४-७॥
tatasten kṛtātithyaḥ so'tithiḥ śatrusūdana। uvāsa kila tāṃ rātriṃ saha tena dvijena vai ॥12-344-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तेन (tena) - by him; कृतातिथ्यः (kṛtātithyaḥ) - having received hospitality; सः (saḥ) - he; अतिथिः (atithiḥ) - guest; शत्रुसूदन (śatrusūdana) - destroyer of enemies; उवास (uvāsa) - remained; किल (kila) - indeed; ताम् (tām) - that; रात्रिम् (rātrim) - night; सह (saha) - with; तेन (tena) - with him; द्विजेन (dvijena) - with the twice-born; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Then, by him, having received hospitality, he, the guest, destroyer of enemies, remained indeed that night with him, with the twice-born, indeed.)
Then, having been offered hospitality by him, the guest—destroyer of enemies—indeed stayed that night together with the twice-born. (12-344-7)
तत्तच्च धर्मसंयुक्तं तयोः कथयतोस्तदा। व्यतीता सा निशा कृत्स्ना सुखेन दिवसोपमा ॥१२-३४४-८॥
tattacca dharmasaṃyuktaṃ tayoḥ kathayatostadā। vyatītā sā niśā kṛtsnā sukhena divasopamā ॥12-344-8॥
[तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; च (ca) - and; धर्मसंयुक्तं (dharmasaṃyuktaṃ) - joined with dharma; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; कथयतोः (kathayatoh) - while speaking; तदा (tadā) - then; व्यतीता (vyatītā) - passed; सा (sā) - that; निशा (niśā) - night; कृत्स्ना (kṛtsnā) - entire; सुखेन (sukhena) - with happiness; दिवसोपमा (divasopamā) - like day;]
(That and that, joined with dharma, of those two, while speaking, then, passed, that, night, entire, with happiness, like day.)
While those two were speaking about that and other matters connected with dharma, then that entire night, happy as if it were day, passed. (12-344-8)
ततः प्रभातसमये सोऽतिथिस्तेन पूजितः। ब्राह्मणेन यथाशक्त्या स्वकार्यमभिकाङ्क्षता ॥१२-३४४-९॥
tataḥ prabhātasamaye so'tithistena pūjitaḥ। brāhmaṇena yathāśaktyā svakāryamabhikāṅkṣatā ॥12-344-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रभातसमये (prabhātasamaye) - at dawn time; सः (saḥ) - he; अतिथिः (atithiḥ) - guest; तेन (tena) - by him; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - honored; ब्राह्मणेन (brāhmaṇena) - by the brāhmaṇa; यथा (yathā) - according as; शक्त्या (śaktyā) - with ability; स्वकार्यम् (svakāryam) - own work; अभिकाङ्क्षता (abhikāṅkṣatā) - desiring;]
(Then at dawn time, he, the guest, by him, honored; by the brāhmaṇa, according as with ability, own work desiring. (12-344-9))
Then, at dawn, the guest was honored by the brāhmaṇa to the best of his ability, while desiring to attend to his own work. (12-344-9)
ततः स विप्रः कृतधर्मनिश्चयः; कृताभ्यनुज्ञः स्वजनेन धर्मवित्। यथोपदिष्टं भुजगेन्द्रसंश्रयं; जगाम काले सुकृतैकनिश्चयः ॥१२-३४४-१०॥
tataḥ sa vipraḥ kṛtadharmaniscayaḥ; kṛtābhyanujñaḥ svajanena dharmavit। yathopadiṣṭaṃ bhujagendrasaṃśrayaṃ; jagāma kāle sukṛtaikaniscayaḥ ॥12-344-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - brāhmaṇa; कृतधर्मनिश्चयः (kṛta-dharma-niścayaḥ) - having made a resolve regarding dharma; कृताभ्यनुज्ञः (kṛta-abhyanujñaḥ) - having obtained permission; स्वजनेन (svajanena) - by his own people; धर्मवित् (dharmavit) - knower of dharma; यथोपदिष्टं (yathā-upadiṣṭam) - as instructed; भुजगेन्द्रसंश्रयम् (bhujagendra-saṃśrayam) - the refuge of the king of serpents; जगाम (jagāma) - he went; काले (kāle) - at the (right) time; सुकृतैकनिश्चयः (sukṛta-eka-niścayaḥ) - one whose resolve is only for good deeds;]
(Then he, the brāhmaṇa, having made a resolve regarding dharma, having obtained permission from his own people, knower of dharma, as instructed, to the refuge of the king of serpents, went at the (right) time, one whose resolve is only for good deeds. (12-344-10))
Then that brāhmaṇa, having firmly resolved upon dharma and having received permission from his family, being a knower of dharma, went at the proper time, as instructed, to the refuge of the king of serpents, his mind set solely on virtuous deeds. (12-344-10)
