The serpent said.
अथ ब्राह्मणरूपेण कं तं समनुपश्यसि। मानुषं केवलं विप्रं देवं वाथ शुचिस्मिते ॥१२-३४८-१॥
atha brāhmaṇarūpeṇa kaṃ taṃ samanupaśyasi। mānuṣaṃ kevalaṃ vipraṃ devaṃ vātha śucismite ॥12-348-1॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; ब्राह्मणरूपेण (brāhmaṇarūpeṇa) - in the form of a brāhmaṇa; कं (kaṃ) - whom; तं (taṃ) - him; समनुपश्यसि (samanupaśyasi) - do you perceive; do you see; मानुषं (mānuṣaṃ) - human; केवलं (kevalaṃ) - only; merely; विप्रं (vipraṃ) - brāhmaṇa; sage; देवं (devaṃ) - god; deity; वा (vā) - or; अथ (atha) - or; then; शुचिस्मिते (śucismite) - O pure-smiling one;]
(Now, in the form of a brāhmaṇa, whom do you see him as? Human, only, brāhmaṇa, god, or then, O pure-smiling one.)
Now, in the form of a brāhmaṇa, whom do you perceive him to be, O pure-smiling one? Do you see him as merely a human, a brāhmaṇa, or a god? (12-348-1)
को हि मां मानुषः शक्तो द्रष्टुकामो यशस्विनि। संदर्शनरुचिर्वाक्यमाज्ञापूर्वं वदिष्यति ॥१२-३४८-२॥
ko hi māṃ mānuṣaḥ śakto draṣṭukāmo yaśasvini. saṃdarśanarucirvākyamājñāpūrvaṃ vadiṣyati ॥12-348-2॥
[को (ko) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; मां (māṃ) - me; मानुषः (mānuṣaḥ) - human; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - capable; द्रष्टुकामः (draṣṭukāmaḥ) - desirous to see; यशस्विनि (yaśasvini) - O illustrious one; संदर्शनरुचिः (saṃdarśanaruciḥ) - having desire for seeing; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; आज्ञापूर्वम् (ājñāpūrvam) - before command; वदिष्यति (vadiṣyati) - will say;]
(Who indeed me human capable desirous to see O illustrious one, having desire for seeing speech before command will say.)
O illustrious one, which human who desires to see me and is capable, will speak words expressing the wish to see me before being permitted? (12-348-2)
सुरासुरगणानां च देवर्षीणां च भामिनि। ननु नागा महावीर्याः सौरसेयास्तरस्विनः ॥१२-३४८-३॥
surāsuragaṇānāṃ ca devarṣīṇāṃ ca bhāmini। nanu nāgā mahāvīryāḥ sauraseyāstarasvinaḥ ॥12-348-3॥
[सुर (sura) - deva; god; असुर (asura) - demon; गणानाम् (gaṇānām) - of the groups; च (ca) - and; देवर्षीणाम् (devarṣīṇām) - of the divine sages; च (ca) - and; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O radiant one; ननु (nanu) - indeed; नागाः (nāgāḥ) - serpents; महावीर्याः (mahāvīryāḥ) - of great strength; सौरसेयाः (sauraseyāḥ) - descendants of Saurasena; तरस्विनः (tarasvinaḥ) - energetic;]
(Of the groups of gods and demons and of the divine sages, O radiant one, indeed the serpents of great strength, the Saurasenas, are energetic.)
O radiant one, among the groups of gods, demons, and divine sages, indeed, the serpents of great strength and the energetic Saurasenas stand out. (12-348-3)
वन्दनीयाश्च वरदा वयमप्यनुयायिनः। मनुष्याणां विशेषेण धनाध्यक्षा इति श्रुतिः ॥१२-३४८-४॥
vandanīyāś ca varadā vayam apy anuyāyinaḥ। manuṣyāṇāṃ viśeṣeṇa dhanādhyakṣā iti śrutiḥ ॥12-348-4॥
[वन्दनीयाः (vandanīyāḥ) - worthy of reverence; च (ca) - and; वरदा (varadā) - bestowers of boons; वयम् (vayam) - we; अपि (api) - also; अनुयायिनः (anuyāyinaḥ) - followers; मनुष्याणाम् (manuṣyāṇām) - of men; विशेषेण (viśeṣeṇa) - especially; धनाध्यक्षा (dhanādhyakṣā) - superintendents of wealth; इति (iti) - thus; श्रुतिः (śrutiḥ) - the scripture;]
(Worthy of reverence and bestowers of boons, we also are followers; of men especially, superintendents of wealth, thus the scripture.)

The serpent's wife said.
आर्जवेनाभिजानामि नासौ देवोऽनिलाशन। एकं त्वस्य विजानामि भक्तिमानतिरोषणः ॥१२-३४८-५॥
ārjavena abhijānāmi na asau devaḥ anila-aśana। ekaṃ tu asya vijānāmi bhaktimān ati-roṣaṇaḥ ॥12-348-5॥
[आर्जवेन (ārjavena) - by straightforwardness; अभिजानामि (abhijānāmi) - I recognize; न (na) - not; असौ (asau) - he; देवः (devaḥ) - god; अनिलाशन (anila-aśana) - eater of wind; एकं (ekaṃ) - one; तु (tu) - but; अस्य (asya) - of him; विजानामि (vijānāmi) - I know; भक्तिमान् (bhaktimān) - devoted; अति (ati) - very; रोषणः (roṣaṇaḥ) - angry;]
(By straightforwardness I recognize, not he god eater of wind. One but of him I know, devoted very angry.)
By straightforwardness I recognize that he is not a god who eats wind. But I know one thing about him: he is devoted and very angry. (12-348-5)
स हि कार्यान्तराकाङ्क्षी जलेप्सुः स्तोकको यथा। वर्षं वर्षप्रियः पक्षी दर्शनं तव काङ्क्षति ॥१२-३४८-६॥
sa hi kāryāntarākāṅkṣī jal-epsuḥ stokakaḥ yathā। varṣaṃ varṣapriyaḥ pakṣī darśanaṃ tava kāṅkṣati ॥12-348-6॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; कार्य-अन्तर-अकाङ्क्षी (kārya-antara-akāṅkṣī) - one desiring another task; जल-इप्सुः (jala-epsuḥ) - one desiring water; स्तोककः (stokakaḥ) - heron; यथा (yathā) - just as; वर्षम् (varṣam) - rain; वर्ष-प्रियः (varṣa-priyaḥ) - one fond of rain; पक्षी (pakṣī) - bird; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - sight; तव (tava) - your; काङ्क्षति (kāṅkṣati) - desires;]
(He indeed, desiring another task, desiring water, just as the heron, the bird fond of rain, desires the sight of your rain.)
He, longing for another task and thirsting for water, is like the heron who, being fond of rain, eagerly awaits the sight of your rain. (12-348-6)
न हि त्वा दैवतं किञ्चिद्विविग्नं प्रतिपालयेत्। तुल्ये ह्यभिजने जातो न कश्चित्पर्युपासते ॥१२-३४८-७॥
na hi tvā daivataṃ kiñcidvivignaṃ pratipālayet। tulye hyabhijane jāto na kaścit paryupāsate ॥12-348-7॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वा (tvā) - you; दैवतं (daivataṃ) - divine being; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - at all; विविग्नं (vivignaṃ) - disturbed; प्रतिपालयेत् (pratipālayet) - would wait for; तुल्ये (tulye) - in equal; हि (hi) - indeed; अभिजने (abhijane) - in noble birth; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; न (na) - not; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; पर्युपासते (paryupāsate) - serves;]
(Not indeed you, a divine being, at all disturbed, would wait for. In equal indeed noble birth born, not anyone serves.)
Indeed, no divine being, even if disturbed, would wait for you. For among those born in equal noble birth, no one serves another. (12-348-7)
तद्रोषं सहजं त्यक्त्वा त्वमेनं द्रष्टुमर्हसि। आशाछेदेन तस्याद्य नात्मानं दग्धुमर्हसि ॥१२-३४८-८॥
tadroṣaṃ sahajaṃ tyaktvā tvam enaṃ draṣṭum arhasi। āśāchedena tasyādya nātmānaṃ dagdhum arhasi ॥12-348-8॥
[तत् (tat) - that; रोषं (roṣam) - anger; सहजं (sahajam) - innate; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एनं (enaṃ) - him; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; अर्हसि (arhasi) - are worthy; आशा (āśā) - hope; छेदेन (chedena) - by cutting; तस्य (tasya) - his; आद्य (ādya) - today; न (na) - not; आत्मानं (ātmānam) - yourself; दग्धुम् (dagdhum) - to burn; अर्हसि (arhasi) - are worthy;]
(That anger innate having abandoned you him to see are worthy. Hope by cutting his today not yourself to burn are worthy.)
Having abandoned that innate anger, you are worthy to see him. By cutting off hope for him today, you should not burn yourself. (12-348-8)
आशया त्वभिपन्नानामकृत्वाश्रुप्रमार्जनम्। राजा वा राजपुत्रो वा भ्रूणहत्यैव युज्यते ॥१२-३४८-९॥
āśayā tv abhipannānām akṛtvā aśru-pramārjanam। rājā vā rājaputro vā bhrūṇa-hatyā eva yujyate ॥12-348-9॥
[आशया (āśayā) - by hope; by expectation; त्व (tv) - but; indeed; अभिपन्नानाम् (abhipannānām) - of those who are afflicted; of those who are overcome; अकृत्वा (akṛtvā) - not having done; not having performed; अश्रुप्रमार्जनम् (aśru-pramārjanam) - wiping away of tears; removal of tears; राजा (rājā) - king; वा (vā) - or; राजपुत्रः (rājaputraḥ) - prince; son of the king; वा (vā) - or; भ्रूणहत्या (bhrūṇa-hatyā) - killing of an embryo; infanticide; एव (eva) - indeed; only; युज्यते (yujyate) - is associated; is equated;]
(By hope but of those who are afflicted, not having done the wiping away of tears, the king or the prince or killing of an embryo indeed is associated.)
If, out of hope, the king or the prince does not wipe away the tears of those who are afflicted, it is indeed considered equivalent to the killing of an embryo. (12-348-9)
मौनाज्ज्ञानफलावाप्तिर्दानेन च यशो महत्। वाग्मित्वं सत्यवाक्येन परत्र च महीयते ॥१२-३४८-१०॥
maunāj-jñāna-phalāvāptir-dānena ca yaśo mahat। vāgmitvaṃ satyavākyena paratra ca mahīyate ॥12-348-10॥
[मौनात् (maunāt) - from silence; ज्ञान-फल-अवाप्तिः (jñāna-phala-avāptiḥ) - attainment of the fruit of knowledge; दानेन (dānena) - by giving; च (ca) - and; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; महत् (mahat) - great; वाग्मित्वं (vāgmitvaṃ) - eloquence; सत्य-वाक्येन (satya-vākyena) - by true speech; परत्र (paratra) - in the next world; च (ca) - and; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(From silence, attainment of the fruit of knowledge; by giving, and great fame; eloquence by true speech; in the next world, and is honored.)
From silence comes the attainment of the fruit of knowledge; by giving, great fame is obtained; eloquence is gained by speaking the truth; and in the next world, one is honored. (12-348-10)
भूमिप्रदानेन गतिं लभत्याश्रमसंमिताम्। नष्टस्यार्थस्य सम्प्राप्तिं कृत्वा फलमुपाश्नुते ॥१२-३४८-११॥
bhūmipradānena gatiṃ labhatyāśramasaṃmitām। naṣṭasyārthasya samprāptiṃ kṛtvā phalam upāśnute ॥12-348-11॥
[भूमि (bhūmi) - earth; land; प्रदानेन (pradānena) - by the giving; by the act of bestowing; गतिं (gatiṃ) - state; path; destination; लभते (labhate) - obtains; receives; आश्रम (āśrama) - hermitage; stage of life; संमिताम् (saṃmitām) - equal to; comparable to; नष्टस्य (naṣṭasya) - of the lost; अर्थस्य (arthasya) - of the wealth; of the object; सम्प्राप्तिं (samprāptiṃ) - attainment; recovery; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; after doing; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; result; उपाश्नुते (upāśnute) - enjoys; partakes;]
(By the giving of land, one obtains a state equal to a hermitage; having effected the recovery of lost wealth, one enjoys the result.)
By giving land, one attains a state comparable to a hermitage; having recovered lost wealth, one enjoys the fruit. (12-348-11)
अभिप्रेतामसङ्क्लिष्टां कृत्वाकामवतीं क्रियाम्। न याति निरयं कश्चिदिति धर्मविदो विदुः ॥१२-३४८-१२॥
abhipretāmasaṅkliṣṭāṃ kṛtvākāmavatīṃ kriyām। na yāti nirayaṃ kaściditi dharmavido viduḥ ॥12-348-12॥
[अभिप्रेताम् (abhipretām) - desired; intended; असङ्क्लिष्टाम् (asaṅkliṣṭām) - unconfused; untainted; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; having performed; अकामवतीम् (akāmavatīm) - without desire; devoid of desire; क्रियाम् (kriyām) - action; act; न (na) - not; याति (yāti) - goes; attains; निरयम् (nirayam) - hell; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; anyone at all; इति (iti) - thus; so; धर्मविदः (dharmavidaḥ) - knowers of dharma; those who know dharma; विदुः (viduḥ) - know; have known;]
(Having performed the desired, unconfused action without desire, not anyone goes to hell—thus knowers of dharma have known.)
The knowers of dharma have declared that if one performs the intended, untainted action without desire, no one goes to hell. (12-348-12)

अभिमानेन मानो मे जातिदोषेण वै महान्। रोषः सङ्कल्पजः साध्वि दग्धो वाचाग्निना त्वया ॥१२-३४८-१३॥
abhimānena māno me jātidoṣeṇa vai mahān। roṣaḥ saṅkalpajaḥ sādhvi dagdho vācāgninā tvayā ॥12-348-13॥
[अभिमानेन (abhimānena) - by pride; मानः (mānaḥ) - honor; मे (me) - my; जातिदोषेण (jātidoṣeṇa) - by the fault of birth; वै (vai) - indeed; महान् (mahān) - great; रोषः (roṣaḥ) - anger; सङ्कल्पजः (saṅkalpajaḥ) - born of resolve; साध्वि (sādhvi) - O virtuous lady; दग्धः (dagdhaḥ) - burnt; वाचाग्निना (vācāgninā) - by the fire of words; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(By pride, my honor, by the fault of birth indeed great, anger born of resolve, O virtuous lady, burnt by the fire of words by you.)
O virtuous lady, by pride my honor and by the fault of birth, indeed great anger born of resolve has been burnt by the fire of your words. (12-348-13)
न च रोषादहं साध्वि पश्येयमधिकं तमः। यस्य वक्तव्यतां यान्ति विशेषेण भुजङ्गमाः ॥१२-३४८-१४॥
na ca roṣād ahaṃ sādhvi paśyeyam adhikaṃ tamaḥ। yasya vaktavyatāṃ yānti viśeṣeṇa bhujaṅgamāḥ ॥12-348-14॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; रोषात् (roṣāt) - from anger; अहम् (aham) - I; साध्वि (sādhvi) - O virtuous lady; पश्येयम् (paśyeyam) - would see; अधिकम् (adhikam) - greater; तमः (tamaḥ) - darkness; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; वक्तव्यताम् (vaktavyatām) - the state of being spoken to; यान्ति (yānti) - go; विशेषेण (viśeṣeṇa) - especially; भुजङ्गमाः (bhujaṅgamāḥ) - serpents;]
(Not and from anger I O virtuous lady would see greater darkness; of whom the state of being spoken to go especially serpents.)
Nor, O virtuous lady, would I, out of anger, see a greater darkness; those to whom even serpents especially go to be addressed. (12-348-14)
दोषस्य हि वशं गत्वा दशग्रीवः प्रतापवान्। तथा शक्रप्रतिस्पर्धी हतो रामेण संयुगे ॥१२-३४८-१५॥
doṣasya hi vaśaṃ gatvā daśagrīvaḥ pratāpavān। tathā śakrapratispardhī hato rāmeṇa saṃyuge ॥12-348-15॥
[दोषस्य (doṣasya) - of fault; of defect; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; वशं (vaśaṃ) - control; power; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; having reached; दशग्रीवः (daśagrīvaḥ) - ten-necked (Rāvaṇa); प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - powerful; mighty; तथा (tathā) - thus; in that way; शक्रप्रतिस्पर्धी (śakrapratispardhī) - rival of Indra; competitor with Śakra; हतः (hataḥ) - slain; killed; रामेण (rāmeṇa) - by Rāma; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle; in combat;]
(Having indeed gone under the control of fault, the ten-necked, powerful, thus rival of Indra, was slain by Rāma in battle.)
Because he fell under the sway of fault, the mighty ten-necked Rāvaṇa, rival of Indra, was slain by Rāma in battle. (12-348-15)
अन्तःपुरगतं वत्सं श्रुत्वा रामेण निर्हृतम्। धर्षणाद्रोषसंविग्नाः कार्तवीर्यसुता हताः ॥१२-३४८-१६॥
antaḥpuragataṃ vatsaṃ śrutvā rāmeṇa nirhṛtam। dharṣaṇādroṣasaṃvignāḥ kārtavīryasutā hatāḥ ॥12-348-16॥
[अन्तःपुरगतं (antaḥpuragatam) - entered into the inner apartments; वत्सं (vatsam) - calf; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; रामेण (rāmeṇa) - by Rāma; निर्हृतम् (nirhṛtam) - taken away; धर्षणात् (dharṣaṇāt) - from the outrage; रोषसंविग्नाः (roṣasaṃvignāḥ) - agitated by anger; कार्तवीर्यसुता (kārtavīryasutā) - the sons of Kārtavīrya; हताः (hatāḥ) - were slain;]
(Having heard that the calf which had entered the inner apartments was taken away by Rāma, the sons of Kārtavīrya, agitated by anger from the outrage, were slain.)
When they heard that Rāma had taken away the calf that had entered the inner apartments, the sons of Kārtavīrya, agitated by the outrage and anger, were slain. (12-348-16)
जामदग्न्येन रामेण सहस्रनयनोपमः। संयुगे निहतो रोषात्कार्तवीर्यो महाबलः ॥१२-३४८-१७॥
jāmadagnyena rāmeṇa sahasranayanopamaḥ। saṃyuge nihato roṣātkārtavīryo mahābalaḥ ॥12-348-17॥
[जामदग्न्येन (jāmadagnyena) - by the son of Jamadagni; रामेण (rāmeṇa) - by Rāma; सहस्रनयनोपमः (sahasranayanopamaḥ) - equal to thousand-eyed (Indra); संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle; निहतः (nihataḥ) - slain; रोषात् (roṣāt) - from anger; कार्तवीर्यः (kārtavīryaḥ) - Kārtavīrya; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength;]
(By the son of Jamadagni, by Rāma, equal to thousand-eyed (Indra), in battle, slain, from anger, Kārtavīrya, of great strength.)
Kārtavīrya, of great strength and equal to Indra, was slain in battle by Rāma, the son of Jamadagni, out of anger. (12-348-17)
तदेष तपसां शत्रुः श्रेयसश्च निपातनः। निगृहीतो मया रोषः श्रुत्वैव वचनं तव ॥१२-३४८-१८॥
tadeṣa tapasāṃ śatruḥ śreyasaś ca nipātanaḥ। nigṛhīto mayā roṣaḥ śrutvaiva vacanaṃ tava ॥12-348-18॥
[तत् (tat) - that; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; तपसाम् (tapasām) - of austerities; शत्रुः (śatruḥ) - enemy; श्रेयसः (śreyasaḥ) - of excellence; च (ca) - and; निपातनः (nipātanaḥ) - downfall; निगृहीतः (nigṛhītaḥ) - restrained; मया (mayā) - by me; रोषः (roṣaḥ) - anger; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; एव (eva) - indeed; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; तव (tava) - your;]
(That this is the enemy of austerities, and the downfall of excellence; anger has been restrained by me, having indeed heard your word.)
This, being the enemy of austerities and the downfall of excellence, I have restrained my anger upon hearing your words. (12-348-18)
आत्मानं च विशेषेण प्रशंसाम्यनपायिनि। यस्य मे त्वं विशालाक्षि भार्या सर्वगुणान्विता ॥१२-३४८-१९॥
ātmānaṃ ca viśeṣeṇa praśaṃsāmyanapāyini। yasya me tvaṃ viśālākṣi bhāryā sarvaguṇānvitā ॥12-348-19॥
[आत्मानं (ātmānam) - self; (accusative); च (ca) - and; विशेषेण (viśeṣeṇa) - especially; (with distinction); प्रशंसामि (praśaṃsāmi) - I praise; अनपायिनि (anapāyini) - O unfailing one; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; मे (me) - my; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; विशालाक्षि (viśālākṣi) - O large-eyed one; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; सर्वगुणान्विता (sarvaguṇānvitā) - endowed with all virtues;]
(I especially praise myself, O unfailing one; of whom you, O large-eyed one, are the wife endowed with all virtues.)

एष तत्रैव गच्छामि यत्र तिष्ठत्यसौ द्विजः। सर्वथा चोक्तवान्वाक्यं नाकृतार्थः प्रयास्यति ॥१२-३४८-२०॥
eṣa tatraiva gacchāmi yatra tiṣṭhaty asau dvijaḥ। sarvathā coktvān vākyaṃ nākṛtārthaḥ prayāsyati ॥12-348-20॥
[एष (eṣa) - this (person); तत्रैव (tatraiva) - right there; गच्छामि (gacchāmi) - I go; यत्र (yatra) - where; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - stands; असौ (asau) - that (person); द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - twice-born (Brahmin); सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; च (ca) - and; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - has spoken; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - statement; न (na) - not; अकृतार्थः (akṛtārthaḥ) - one whose purpose is not accomplished; प्रयास्यति (prayāsyati) - will go;]
(This (person) right there I go where stands that (person) twice-born; in every way and has spoken statement not one whose purpose is not accomplished will go. (12-348-20))
I will go right there where that twice-born stands; in every way, one who has spoken a statement and whose purpose is not accomplished will not go. (12-348-20)
