Bhishma said.
स पन्नगपतिस्तत्र प्रययौ ब्राह्मणं प्रति। तमेव मनसा ध्यायन्कार्यवत्तां विचारयन् ॥१२-३४९-१॥
sa pannagapatistatra prayayau brāhmaṇaṃ prati। tameva manasā dhyāyankāryavattāṃ vicārayan ॥12-349-1॥
[स (sa) - he; पन्नगपतिः (pannagapatiḥ) - lord of serpents; तत्र (tatra) - there; प्रययौ (prayayau) - went; ब्राह्मणं (brāhmaṇam) - to the brāhmaṇa; प्रति (prati) - towards; तम् (tam) - him; एव (eva) - only; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; ध्यायन् (dhyāyan) - meditating; कार्यवत्ताम् (kāryavattām) - the state of being purposeful; विचारयन् (vicārayan) - considering;]
(He, the lord of serpents, there went towards the brāhmaṇa; him only with the mind meditating, the state of being purposeful considering.)
There, the lord of serpents went towards the brāhmaṇa, meditating only on him in his mind and considering the state of being purposeful. (12-349-1)
तमभिक्रम्य नागेन्द्रो मतिमान्स नरेश्वर। प्रोवाच मधुरं वाक्यं प्रकृत्या धर्मवत्सलः ॥१२-३४९-२॥
tam abhikramya nāgendro matimān sa nareśvara। provāca madhuraṃ vākyaṃ prakṛtyā dharmavatsalaḥ ॥12-349-2॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अभिक्रम्य (abhikramya) - having approached; नागेन्द्रः (nāgendraḥ) - king of serpents; मतिमान् (matimān) - wise; सः (saḥ) - he; नरेश्वर (nareśvara) - lord of men; प्रोवाच (provāca) - spoke; मधुरम् (madhuram) - sweet; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; प्रकृत्या (prakṛtyā) - by nature; धर्मवत्सलः (dharmavatsalaḥ) - one who is fond of dharma;]
(Having approached him, the king of serpents, wise, he, the lord of men, spoke sweet words, by nature fond of dharma.)
Having approached him, the wise king of serpents, who was by nature fond of dharma, spoke sweet words to the lord of men. (12-349-2)
भो भो क्षाम्याभिभाषे त्वां न रोषं कर्तुमर्हसि। इह त्वमभिसम्प्राप्तः कस्यार्थे किं प्रयोजनम् ॥१२-३४९-३॥
bho bho kṣāmyābhibhāṣe tvāṃ na roṣaṃ kartumarhasi। iha tvam abhisamprāptaḥ kasyārthe kiṃ prayojanam ॥12-349-3॥

(O O forgiveness I address you not anger to do you ought. Here you arrived for what purpose what purpose.)
O, O, I address you for forgiveness; you ought not to be angry. For what purpose have you arrived here, and what is your intention? (12-349-3)
आभिमुख्यादभिक्रम्य स्नेहात्पृच्छामि ते द्विज। विविक्ते गोमतीतीरे किं वा त्वं पर्युपाससे ॥१२-३४९-४॥
ābhimukhyād abhikramya snehāt pṛcchāmi te dvija। vivikte gomatī-tīre kiṃ vā tvaṃ paryupāsase ॥12-349-4॥
[आभिमुख्यात् (ābhimukhyāt) - from approach; अभिक्रम्य (abhikramya) - having approached; स्नेहात् (snehāt) - from affection; पृच्छामि (pṛcchāmi) - I ask; ते (te) - to you; द्विज (dvija) - O twice-born; विविक्ते (vivikte) - in the solitary; गोमती-तीरे (gomatī-tīre) - on the bank of the Gomati; किम् (kim) - what; वा (vā) - or; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; पर्युपाससे (paryupāsase) - do you attend;]
(From approach, having approached, from affection, I ask to you, O twice-born; in the solitary Gomati bank, what or you do you attend? (12-349-4))
Having approached you out of affection, O twice-born, I ask: In this solitary place on the bank of the Gomati, what is it that you are engaged in? (12-349-4)
ब्राह्मण उवाच॥
brāhmaṇa uvāca॥
[ब्राह्मण (brāhmaṇa) - brāhmaṇa; a member of the priestly class; उवाच (uvāca) - said; spoke;]
(brāhmaṇa said;)
The brāhmaṇa said:
धर्मारण्यं हि मां विद्धि नागं द्रष्टुमिहागतम्। पद्मनाभं द्विजश्रेष्ठं तत्र मे कार्यमाहितम् ॥१२-३४९-५॥
dharmāraṇyaṃ hi māṃ viddhi nāgaṃ draṣṭum ihāgatam। padmanābhaṃ dvijaśreṣṭhaṃ tatra me kāryam āhitam ॥12-349-5॥
[धर्मारण्यं (dharmāraṇyam) - forest of dharma; हि (hi) - indeed; माम् (mām) - me; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; नागम् (nāgam) - Nāga; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; इह (iha) - here; आगतम् (āgatam) - arrived; पद्मनाभम् (padmanābham) - Padmanabha; द्विजश्रेष्ठम् (dvijaśreṣṭham) - best of twice-born; तत्र (tatra) - there; मे (me) - my; कार्यम् (kāryam) - task; आहितम् (āhitam) - assigned;]
(Know me indeed as the Nāga who has arrived here to see the forest of dharma; Padmanabha, best of twice-born, there my assigned task is.)
Know that I am the Nāga who has come here to see the forest of dharma; O Padmanabha, best of the twice-born, my assigned task is there. (12-349-5)
तस्य चाहमसांनिध्यं श्रुतवानस्मि तं गतम्। स्वजनं तं प्रतीक्षामि पर्जन्यमिव कर्षकः ॥१२-३४९-६॥
tasya cāham asāṁnidhyaṁ śrutavānasmi taṁ gatam। svajanaṁ taṁ pratīkṣāmi parjanyam iva karṣakaḥ ॥12-349-6॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; असांनिध्यम् (asāṁnidhyam) - absence of presence; श्रुतवान् (śrutavān) - have heard; अस्मि (asmi) - am; तम् (tam) - him; गतं (gatam) - gone; स्वजनम् (svajanam) - own people; तम् (tam) - him; प्रतीक्षामि (pratīkṣāmi) - I await; पर्जन्यम् (parjanyam) - rain; इव (iva) - like; कर्षकः (karṣakaḥ) - farmer;]
(Of him and I absence of presence have heard am him gone. Own people him I await rain like farmer. (12-349-6))
And I have heard of his absence, that he has gone. I await my own kinsman, just as a farmer awaits the rain. (12-349-6)
तस्य चाक्लेशकरणं स्वस्तिकारसमाहितम्। वर्तयाम्ययुतं ब्रह्म योगयुक्तो निरामयः ॥१२-३४९-७॥
tasya cākleśakaraṇaṃ svastikārasamāhitam। vartayāmyayutaṃ brahma yogayukto nirāmayaḥ ॥12-349-7॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; of that; his; च (ca) - and; अक्लेशकरणम् (akleśakaraṇam) - not-causing-pain; not-producing-affliction; स्वस्तिकारसमाहितम् (svastikārasamāhitam) - well-being-producing-concentrated; absorbed in the act of producing auspiciousness; वर्तयामि (vartayāmi) - I maintain; I keep; अयुतम् (ayutam) - ten thousand; myriad; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; the Absolute; योगयुक्तः (yogayuktaḥ) - joined-with-yoga; engaged in yoga; निरामयः (nirāmayaḥ) - free-from-disease; free-from-affliction;]
(Of him and not-causing-pain, well-being-producing-concentrated. I maintain ten thousand Brahman, joined with yoga, free from affliction.)
And of him, I, joined with yoga and free from affliction, maintain ten thousand Brahmans, all absorbed in auspiciousness and free from pain. (12-349-7)
नाग उवाच॥
nāga uvāca॥
[नाग (nāga) - serpent; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Serpent said;)
The serpent said.
अहो कल्याणवृत्तस्त्वं साधु सज्जनवत्सलः। श्रवाढ्यस्त्वं महाभाग परं स्नेहेन पश्यसि ॥१२-३४९-८॥
aho kalyāṇavṛttastvaṃ sādhu sajjanavatsalaḥ। śravāḍhyastvaṃ mahābhāga paraṃ snehena paśyasi ॥12-349-8॥
[अहो (aho) - indeed; कल्याणवृत्तः (kalyāṇavṛttaḥ) - of auspicious conduct; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; साधु (sādhu) - good; सज्जनवत्सलः (sajjanavatsalaḥ) - affectionate to good people; श्रवाढ्यः (śravāḍhyaḥ) - rich in fame; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - greatly fortunate; परम् (param) - supremely; स्नेहेन (snehena) - with affection; पश्यसि (paśyasi) - you see;]
(Indeed, of auspicious conduct you, good, affectionate to good people; rich in fame you, greatly fortunate, supremely with affection you see.)
Indeed, you are of auspicious conduct, good, affectionate to good people; you are rich in fame, greatly fortunate, and you see everything with supreme affection. (12-349-8)
अहं स नागो विप्रर्षे यथा मां विन्दते भवान्। आज्ञापय यथा स्वैरं किं करोमि प्रियं तव ॥१२-३४९-९॥
ahaṃ sa nāgo viprarṣe yathā māṃ vindate bhavān। ājñāpaya yathā svairaṃ kiṃ karomi priyaṃ tava ॥12-349-9॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; स (sa) - that; नागः (nāgaḥ) - serpent; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O best of Brāhmaṇas; यथा (yathā) - as; माम् (mām) - me; विन्दते (vindate) - finds; भवान् (bhavān) - you; आज्ञापय (ājñāpaya) - command; यथा (yathā) - so that; स्वैरम् (svairam) - freely; किम् (kim) - what; करोमि (karomi) - I do; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear; तव (tava) - to you;]
(I that serpent O best of Brāhmaṇas as me finds you command so that freely what I do dear to you.)
O best of Brāhmaṇas, I am that serpent whom you have found; command me so that I may freely do whatever is dear to you. (12-349-9)
भवन्तं स्वजनादस्मि सम्प्राप्तं श्रुतवानिह। अतस्त्वां स्वयमेवाहं द्रष्टुमभ्यागतो द्विज ॥१२-३४९-१०॥
bhavantaṃ svajanādasmi samprāptaṃ śrutavāniha। atastvāṃ svayamevāhaṃ draṣṭumabhyāgato dvija ॥12-349-10॥
[भवन्तं (bhavantaṃ) - you; (honorific); स्वजनात् (svajanāt) - from own people; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; सम्प्राप्तं (samprāptaṃ) - arrived; attained; श्रुतवान् (śrutavān) - having heard; इह (iha) - here; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; स्वयम् (svayam) - myself; एव (eva) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; अभ्यागतः (abhyāgataḥ) - have come; द्विज (dvija) - O twice-born;]
(You, from own people, I am arrived, having heard here. Therefore, you, myself indeed I, to see, have come, O twice-born.)
Having heard from my own people that you have arrived here, O twice-born, I have therefore come myself to see you. (12-349-10)
सम्प्राप्तश्च भवानद्य कृतार्थः प्रतियास्यति। विस्रब्धो मां द्विजश्रेष्ठ विषये योक्तुमर्हसि ॥१२-३४९-११॥
samprāptaś ca bhavān adya kṛtārthaḥ pratiyāsyati। visrabdho māṃ dvijaśreṣṭha viṣaye yoktum arhasi ॥12-349-11॥
[सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - having arrived; reached; च (ca) - and; भवान् (bhavān) - you; respected one; अद्य (adya) - today; कृतार्थः (kṛtārthaḥ) - having accomplished the purpose; fulfilled; प्रतियास्यति (pratiyāsyati) - will return; will go back; विस्रब्धः (visrabdhaḥ) - confident; without hesitation; माम् (mām) - me; द्विजश्रेष्ठ (dvijaśreṣṭha) - O best of the twice-born; O excellent Brāhmaṇa; विषये (viṣaye) - in the matter; regarding; योक्तुम् (yoktum) - to speak; to tell; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; you should;]
(Having arrived and you today, having accomplished the purpose, will return. Confident, O best of the twice-born, you ought to tell me regarding the matter. (12-349-11))
You, having arrived today and accomplished your purpose, will return. O best of the twice-born, you should confidently tell me about the matter. (12-349-11)
वयं हि भवता सर्वे गुणक्रीता विशेषतः। यस्त्वमात्महितं त्यक्त्वा मामेवेहानुरुध्यसे ॥१२-३४९-१२॥
vayaṃ hi bhavatā sarve guṇakrītā viśeṣataḥ। yastvamātmahitaṃ tyaktvā māmevehānurudhyase ॥12-349-12॥
[वयम् (vayam) - we; हि (hi) - indeed; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; सर्वे (sarve) - all; गुणक्रीता (guṇakrītā) - purchased by virtue; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; यः (yaḥ) - who; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आत्महितम् (ātmahitam) - own benefit; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; माम् (mām) - me; एव (eva) - only; इह (iha) - here; अनुरुध्यसे (anurudhyase) - you follow;]
(We indeed by you all purchased by virtue especially; who you own benefit having abandoned me only here you follow.)
Indeed, all of us have been won over by your virtues, especially; for you, having set aside your own benefit, follow only me here. (12-349-12)
ब्राह्मण उवाच॥
brāhmaṇa uvāca॥
[ब्राह्मण (brāhmaṇa) - brāhmaṇa; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(brāhmaṇa said;)
The brāhmaṇa said.
आगतोऽहं महाभाग तव दर्शनलालसः। कञ्चिदर्थमनर्थज्ञः प्रष्टुकामो भुजङ्गम ॥१२-३४९-१३॥
āgato'haṃ mahābhāga tava darśanalālasaḥ। kañcidarthamanarthajñaḥ praṣṭukāmo bhujaṅgama ॥12-349-13॥
[आगतः (āgataḥ) - come; arrived; अहम् (aham) - I; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - O greatly fortunate one; तव (tava) - your; दर्शनलालसः (darśanalālasaḥ) - desirous of seeing; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - some; अर्थम् (artham) - matter; purpose; अनर्थज्ञः (anarthajñaḥ) - ignorant of misfortune; not knowing the disadvantage; प्रष्टुकामः (praṣṭukāmaḥ) - desirous to ask; भुजङ्गम् (bhujaṅgam) - O serpent;]
(I have come, O greatly fortunate one, desirous of seeing you. Some matter, ignorant of misfortune, desirous to ask, O serpent.)
O greatly fortunate one, I have come to see you, eager for your audience. Ignorant of misfortune, I wish to ask you about a certain matter, O serpent. (12-349-13)
अहमात्मानमात्मस्थो मार्गमाणोऽऽत्मनो हितम्। वासार्थिनं महाप्राज्ञ बलवन्तमुपास्मि ह ॥१२-३४९-१४॥
aham ātmānam ātmastho mārgamāṇo''tmano hitam। vāsārthinaṃ mahāprājña balavantam upāsmi ha ॥12-349-14॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; आत्मस्थः (ātmasthaḥ) - abiding in self; मार्गमाणः (mārgamāṇaḥ) - seeking; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of the self; हितम् (hitam) - welfare; वासार्थिनम् (vāsārthinam) - desiring abode; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - greatly wise; बलवन्तम् (balavantam) - powerful; उपास्मि (upāsmi) - I worship; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(I, abiding in self, seeking the welfare of the self, indeed worship the greatly wise, powerful one who desires abode.)
I, established in myself and seeking my own welfare, truly worship the greatly wise and powerful one who seeks a dwelling. (12-349-14)
प्रकाशितस्त्वं स्वगुणैर्यशोगर्भगभस्तिभिः। शशाङ्ककरसंस्पर्शैर्हृद्यैरात्मप्रकाशितैः ॥१२-३४९-१५॥
prakāśitastvaṃ svaguṇairyashogarbhagabhastibhiḥ। śaśāṅkakarasaṃsparśairhṛdyairātmaprakāśitaiḥ ॥12-349-15॥
[प्रकाशितः (prakāśitaḥ) - manifested; revealed; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; स्वगुणैः (svaguṇaiḥ) - by own qualities; यशोगर्भगभस्तिभिः (yashogarbhagabhastibhiḥ) - by rays filled with fame; शशाङ्ककरसंस्पर्शैः (śaśāṅkakarasaṃsparśaiḥ) - by the touches of moonbeams; हृद्यैः (hṛdyaiḥ) - pleasing; delightful; आत्मप्रकाशितैः (ātmaprakāśitaiḥ) - self-illuminated;]
(Manifested you by own qualities, by rays filled with fame, by the touches of moonbeams, pleasing, self-illuminated.)
You are revealed by your own qualities, by rays filled with fame, by the delightful touch of moonbeams, and by your self-illumination. (12-349-15)
तस्य मे प्रश्नमुत्पन्नं छिन्धि त्वमनिलाशन। पश्चात्कार्यं वदिष्यामि श्रोतुमर्हति मे भवान् ॥१२-३४९-१६॥
tasya me praśnam utpannaṃ chindhi tvam anilāśana। paścāt kāryaṃ vadiṣyāmi śrotum arhati me bhavān ॥12-349-16॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; मे (me) - to me; प्रश्नम् (praśnam) - question; उत्पन्नम् (utpannam) - arisen; छिन्धि (chindhi) - cut; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अनिलाशन (anilāśana) - O eater of wind; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; कार्यं (kāryam) - matter; वदिष्यामि (vadiṣyāmi) - I will speak; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy; मे (me) - by me; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific);]
(Of him to me question arisen cut you O eater of wind; afterwards matter I will speak; to hear is worthy by me you (honorific);)
O eater of wind, you should resolve the question that has arisen for me; afterwards, I will speak of the matter, and you are worthy to hear it from me. (12-349-16)
