अथ काले बहुतिथे पूर्णे प्राप्तो भुजङ्गमः। दत्ताभ्यनुज्ञः स्वं वेश्म कृतकर्मा विवस्वतः ॥१२-३४७-१॥
atha kāle bahutithe pūrṇe prāpto bhujaṅgamaḥ। dattābhyanujñaḥ svaṃ veśma kṛtakarmā vivasvataḥ ॥12-347-1॥
[अथ (atha) - then; काले (kāle) - at the time; बहुतिथे (bahutithe) - when many lunar days (tithis) had passed; पूर्णे (pūrṇe) - having been completed; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - arrived; भुजङ्गमः (bhujaṅgamaḥ) - the serpent; दत्ताभ्यनुज्ञः (dattābhyanujñaḥ) - having been given permission; स्वम् (svam) - his own; वेश्म (veśma) - house; कृतकर्मा (kṛtakarmā) - having performed the rites; विवस्वतः (vivasvataḥ) - of Vivasvat (the Sun);]
(Then, at the time when many lunar days had been completed, the serpent arrived; having been given permission, having performed the rites, to the house of Vivasvat.)
Then, after many days had passed, the serpent, having received permission and having performed the necessary rites, arrived at the house of Vivasvat. (12-347-1)
तं भार्या समभिक्रामत्पादशौचादिभिर्गुणैः। उपपन्नां च तां साध्वीं पन्नगः पर्यपृच्छत ॥१२-३४७-२॥
taṃ bhāryā samabhikrāmat pādaśaucādibhir guṇaiḥ। upapannāṃ ca tāṃ sādhvīṃ pannagaḥ paryapṛcchata ॥12-347-2॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; समभिक्रामत् (samabhikrāmat) - approached together; पादशौचादिभिः (pādaśaucādibhiḥ) - by foot-purity and others; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - by virtues; उपपन्नां (upapannāṃ) - endowed; च (ca) - and; तां (tāṃ) - her; साध्वीं (sādhvīṃ) - virtuous; पन्नगः (pannagaḥ) - serpent; पर्यपृच्छत् (paryapṛcchat) - inquired;]
(His wife approached him with virtues such as purity of feet; and the serpent inquired about that virtuous woman who was endowed (with such qualities).)

अपि त्वमसि कल्याणि देवतातिथिपूजने। पूर्वमुक्तेन विधिना युक्ता युक्तेन मत्समम् ॥१२-३४७-३॥
api tvam asi kalyāṇi devatātithipūjane. pūrvamuktena vidhinā yuktā yuktena matsamam ॥12-347-3॥
[अपि (api) - indeed; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - auspicious one; देवता (devatā) - deity; अतिथि (atithi) - guest; पूजने (pūjane) - in worship; पूर्व (pūrva) - previous; उक्तेन (uktena) - by what was said; विधिना (vidhinā) - by the method; युक्ता (yuktā) - engaged; युक्तेन (yuktena) - with what is proper; मत्समम् (matsamam) - equal to me;]
(Indeed, you are, O auspicious one, in the worship of deity and guest, engaged by the previously stated method, with what is proper, equal to me.)

न खल्वस्यकृतार्थेन स्त्रीबुद्ध्या मार्दवीकृता। मद्वियोगेन सुश्रोणि वियुक्ता धर्मसेतुना ॥१२-३४७-४॥
na khalv asyakṛtārthena strībuddhyā mārdavīkṛtā। madviyogena suśroṇi viyuktā dharmasetunā ॥12-347-4॥
[न (na) - not; खलु (khalu) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - of him; अकृतार्थेन (akṛtārthena) - by one whose purpose is not accomplished; स्त्रीबुद्ध्या (strībuddhyā) - with the intellect of a woman; मार्दवीकृता (mārdavīkṛtā) - made gentle; मद्वियोगेन (madviyogena) - by separation from me; सुश्रोणि (suśroṇi) - O beautiful-hipped one; वियुक्ता (viyuktā) - separated; धर्मसेतुना (dharmasetunā) - by the bridge of dharma;]
(Not indeed by him whose purpose is not accomplished, with the intellect of a woman, made gentle; by separation from me, O beautiful-hipped one, separated by the bridge of dharma.)
O beautiful-hipped one, it is not that I have been made gentle by the intellect of a woman or by one whose purpose is unaccomplished; rather, I have been separated from you by the bridge of dharma due to our separation. (12-347-4)
नागभार्योवाच॥

[नाग (nāga) - serpent; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Serpent wife said;)
The serpent's wife said.
शिष्याणां गुरुशुश्रूषा विप्राणां वेदपारणम्। भृत्यानां स्वामिवचनं राज्ञां लोकानुपालनम् ॥१२-३४७-५॥
śiṣyāṇāṃ guruśuśrūṣā viprāṇāṃ vedapāraṇam। bhṛtyānāṃ svāmivacanaṃ rājñāṃ lokānupālanam ॥12-347-5॥
[शिष्याणां (śiṣyāṇām) - of disciples; गुरुशुश्रूषा (guruśuśrūṣā) - service to the teacher; विप्राणां (viprāṇām) - of brāhmaṇas; वेदपारणम् (vedapāraṇam) - recitation of the Veda; भृत्यानां (bhṛtyānām) - of servants; स्वामिवचनं (svāmivacanam) - the master's command; राज्ञां (rājñām) - of kings; लोकानुपालनम् (lokānupālanam) - protection of the people;]

सर्वभूतपरित्राणं क्षत्रधर्म इहोच्यते। वैश्यानां यज्ञसंवृत्तिरातिथेयसमन्विता ॥१२-३४७-६॥
sarvabhūtaparitrāṇaṃ kṣatradharma ihochyate. vaiśyānāṃ yajñasaṃvṛttirātitheyasamanvitā ॥12-347-6॥
[सर्व (sarva) - all; भूत (bhūta) - beings; परित्राणं (paritrāṇam) - protection; क्षत्रधर्म (kṣatradharma) - kṣatriya duty; इह (iha) - here; उच्यते (uchyate) - is said; वैश्यानां (vaiśyānām) - of the vaiśyas; यज्ञ (yajña) - sacrifice; संवृत्तिः (saṃvṛttiḥ) - maintenance; आतिथेय (ātitheya) - hospitality to guests; समन्विता (samanvitā) - endowed with;]
(The protection of all beings is here said to be the kṣatriya duty. For the vaiśyas, maintenance through sacrifice endowed with hospitality to guests.)
The duty of kṣatriyas is described here as the protection of all beings. For the vaiśyas, their livelihood is through sacrifices, accompanied by hospitality to guests. (12-347-6)
विप्रक्षत्रियवैश्यानां शुश्रूषा शूद्रकर्म तत्। गृहस्थधर्मो नागेन्द्र सर्वभूतहितैषिता ॥१२-३४७-७॥
vipra-kṣatriya-vaiśyānāṃ śuśrūṣā śūdra-karma tat। gṛhastha-dharmo nāgendra sarva-bhūta-hitaiṣitā ॥12-347-7॥
[विप्र (vipra) - brāhmaṇa; क्षत्रिय (kṣatriya) - warrior; वैश्यानां (vaiśyānāṃ) - of the vaiśyas; शुश्रूषा (śuśrūṣā) - service; शूद्रकर्म (śūdra-karma) - the duty of a śūdra; तत् (tat) - that; गृहस्थधर्मः (gṛhastha-dharmaḥ) - householder's dharma; नागेन्द्र (nāgendra) - O king of serpents; सर्वभूतहितैषिता (sarva-bhūta-hitaiṣitā) - the desire for the welfare of all beings;]
(Service to brāhmaṇas, kṣatriyas, and vaiśyas is the duty of a śūdra; that, O king of serpents, is the householder's dharma, the desire for the welfare of all beings.)

नियताहारता नित्यं व्रतचर्या यथाक्रमम्। धर्मो हि धर्मसम्बन्धादिन्द्रियाणां विशेषणम् ॥१२-३४७-८॥
niyatāhāratā nityaṃ vratacaryā yathākramam। dharmo hi dharmasambandhādindriyāṇāṃ viśeṣaṇam ॥12-347-8॥
[नियताहारता (niyatāhāratā) - regulated-food-habit; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; व्रतचर्या (vratacaryā) - vow-practice; यथाक्रमम् (yathākramam) - according-to-order; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मसम्बन्धात् (dharmasambandhāt) - from-connection-with-dharma; इन्द्रियाणां (indriyāṇāṃ) - of-the-senses; विशेषणम् (viśeṣaṇam) - distinction;]
(Regulated-food-habit always vow-practice according-to-order. Duty indeed from-connection-with-dharma of-the-senses distinction. (12-347-8))
Regulated eating, constant observance of vows in proper order—these are duties; indeed, the distinction of the senses arises from their connection with dharma. (12-347-8)
अहं कस्य कुतो वाहं कः को मे ह भवेदिति। प्रयोजनमतिर्नित्यमेवं मोक्षाश्रमी भवेत् ॥१२-३४७-९॥
ahaṃ kasya kuto vāhaṃ kaḥ ko me ha bhavediti। prayojanamatiḥ nityam evaṃ mokṣāśramī bhavet ॥12-347-9॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; कस्य (kasya) - of whom; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; वा (vā) - or; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; कः (kaḥ) - who; को (ko) - who; मे (me) - to me; ह (ha) - indeed; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; इति (iti) - thus; प्रयोजनमति: (prayojanamatiḥ) - one whose mind is on purpose; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; एवम् (evam) - thus; मोक्षाश्रमी (mokṣāśramī) - one who is in the stage of liberation; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be;]
(I of whom from where or I who who to me indeed would be thus; one whose mind is on purpose always thus one who is in the stage of liberation should be.)
One who is always intent on the purpose, thinking 'Who am I? Whose am I? From where have I come? Who is mine? Who would indeed be mine?'—such a person should always be a seeker after liberation. (12-347-9)
पतिव्रतात्वं भार्यायाः परमो धर्म उच्यते। तवोपदेशान्नागेन्द्र तच्च तत्त्वेन वेद्मि वै ॥१२-३४७-१०॥
pativratātvam bhāryāyāḥ paramo dharma ucyate। tavopadeśānnāgendra tacca tattvena vedmi vai ॥12-347-10॥
[पतिव्रतात्वं (pativratātvam) - the state of being devoted to the husband; भार्यायाः (bhāryāyāḥ) - of the wife; परमः (paramaḥ) - supreme; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said; तव (tava) - by your; उपदेशात् (upadeśāt) - instruction; नागेन्द्र (nāgendra) - O lord of serpents; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; तत्त्वेन (tattvena) - truly; वेद्मि (vedmi) - I know; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(The state of being devoted to the husband of the wife is said to be the supreme duty. By your instruction, O lord of serpents, that also I truly know indeed.)
The supreme duty of a wife is said to be devotion to her husband. O lord of serpents, by your instruction, I have truly come to know this. (12-347-10)
साहं धर्मं विजानन्ती धर्मनित्ये त्वयि स्थिते। सत्पथं कथमुत्सृज्य यास्यामि विषमे पथि ॥१२-३४७-११॥
sāhaṃ dharmaṃ vijānantī dharmanitye tvayi sthite। satpathaṃ katham utsṛjya yāsyāmi viṣame pathi ॥12-347-11॥
[सा (sā) - she; अहम् (aham) - I; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - dharma; विजानन्ती (vijānantī) - knowing; धर्मनित्ये (dharmanitye) - in one always devoted to dharma; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; स्थिते (sthite) - being; सत्पथम् (satpathaṃ) - the good path; कथम् (katham) - how; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - abandoning; यास्यामि (yāsyāmi) - shall I go; विषमे (viṣame) - in a difficult; पथि (pathi) - path;]
(She, I, knowing dharma, with you always devoted to dharma being, the good path, how, abandoning, shall I go, in a difficult, path.)
How can I, who know dharma, with you always devoted to dharma, abandon the good path and go on a difficult path? (12-347-11)
देवतानां महाभाग धर्मचर्या न हीयते। अतिथीनां च सत्कारे नित्ययुक्तास्म्यतन्द्रिता ॥१२-३४७-१२॥
devatānāṃ mahābhāga dharma-caryā na hīyate। atithīnām ca satkāre nitya-yuktā asmi atandritā ॥12-347-12॥
[देवतानां (devatānām) - of the deities; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - O greatly fortunate one; धर्मचर्या (dharma-caryā) - practice of dharma; न (na) - not; हीयते (hīyate) - declines; अतिथीनां (atithīnām) - of guests; च (ca) - and; सत्कारे (satkāre) - in honoring; नित्ययुक्ता (nitya-yuktā) - always engaged; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; अतन्द्रिता (atandritā) - untiring;]
(Of the deities, O greatly fortunate one, the practice of dharma does not decline. Of guests also, in honoring, always engaged, I am, untiring.)
O greatly fortunate one, the practice of dharma among the deities does not diminish. I am always engaged and untiring in honoring guests. (12-347-12)
सप्ताष्टदिवसास्त्वद्य विप्रस्येहागतस्य वै। स च कार्यं न मे ख्याति दर्शनं तव काङ्क्षति ॥१२-३४७-१३॥
saptāṣṭadivasāstv adya viprasyehāgatasya vai। sa ca kāryaṃ na me khyāti darśanaṃ tava kāṅkṣati ॥12-347-13॥
[सप्त (sapta) - seven; अष्ट (aṣṭa) - eight; दिवसाः (divasāḥ) - days; त्व (tv) - indeed; अद्य (adya) - today; विप्रस्य (viprasya) - of the brāhmaṇa; इह (iha) - here; आगतस्य (āgatasya) - of the arrived; वै (vai) - indeed; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - task; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; ख्याति (khyāti) - declares; दर्शनं (darśanaṃ) - sight; तव (tava) - your; काङ्क्षति (kāṅkṣati) - desires;]
(Seven eight days indeed today of the brāhmaṇa here arrived indeed. He and task not to me declares sight your desires.)
Today it has been seven or eight days since the brāhmaṇa arrived here. He does not tell me his purpose, but he desires to see you. (12-347-13)
गोमत्यास्त्वेष पुलिने त्वद्दर्शनसमुत्सुकः। आसीनोऽऽवर्तयन्ब्रह्म ब्राह्मणः संशितव्रतः ॥१२-३४७-१४॥
gomatyās tveṣa puline tvad-darśana-samutsukaḥ। āsīno''vartayan brahma brāhmaṇaḥ saṁśita-vrataḥ ॥12-347-14॥
[गोमत्याः (gomatyāḥ) - of Gomati (river); त् (t) - indeed; एष (eṣa) - this; पुलिने (puline) - on the sandbank; त्वत् (tvat) - your; दर्शन (darśana) - sight; समुत्सुकः (samutsukaḥ) - eager; आसीनः (āsīnaḥ) - sitting; अवर्तयन् (avartayan) - reciting; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Veda; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; संशितव्रतः (saṁśita-vrataḥ) - of firm vow;]
(Of Gomati (river), indeed, this (person) on the sandbank, eager for your sight, sitting, reciting the Veda, the brāhmaṇa of firm vow.)
On the sandbank of the Gomati river, this brāhmaṇa of firm vow, eager to see you, was sitting and reciting the Veda. (12-347-14)
अहं त्वनेन नागेन्द्र सामपूर्वं समाहिता। प्रस्थाप्यो मत्सकाशं स सम्प्राप्तो भुजगोत्तमः ॥१२-३४७-१५॥
ahaṃ tvanena nāgendra sāmapūrvaṃ samāhitā। prasthāpyo matsakāśaṃ sa samprāpto bhujagottamaḥ ॥12-347-15॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; त्व (tva) - but; अनेन (anena) - by this; नागेन्द्र (nāgendra) - O lord of serpents; सामपूर्वं (sāmapūrvam) - with conciliation first; समाहिता (samāhitā) - resolved; प्रस्थाप्यः (prasthāpyaḥ) - to be sent; मत्सकाशम् (matsakāśam) - to my presence; स (sa) - he; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - having arrived; भुजगोत्तमः (bhujagottamaḥ) - O best of serpents;]
(I but by this O lord of serpents with conciliation first resolved to be sent to my presence he having arrived O best of serpents.)
O best of serpents, I, however, resolved to send him to my presence with conciliation first, and he has arrived, O lord of serpents. (12-347-15)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा महाप्राज्ञ तत्र गन्तुं त्वमर्हसि। दातुमर्हसि वा तस्य दर्शनं दर्शनश्रवः ॥१२-३४७-१६॥
etacchrutvā mahāprājña tatra gantuṃ tvamarhasi। dātumarhasi vā tasya darśanaṃ darśanaśravaḥ ॥12-347-16॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - O greatly wise one; तत्र (tatra) - there; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अर्हसि (arhasi) - are worthy; दातुम् (dātum) - to give; अर्हसि (arhasi) - are worthy; वा (vā) - or; तस्य (tasya) - his; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - sight; दर्शनश्रवः (darśanaśravaḥ) - one who has heard of the sight;]
(This having heard, O greatly wise one, there to go you are worthy; to give you are worthy or his sight, O one who has heard of the sight.)
Having heard this, O greatly wise one, you should go there; or you should grant him an audience, O one who has heard of the sight. (12-347-16)
