ब्रह्मप्रोक्तैरृषिप्रोक्तैर्वेदवेदाङ्गसम्भवैः। सर्वलोकेषु विख्यातैः स्थाणुं स्तोष्यामि नामभिः ॥१३-१७-२॥
brahmaproktair ṛṣiproktair vedavedāṅgasambhavaiḥ। sarvalokeṣu vikhyātaiḥ sthāṇuṃ stoṣyāmi nāmabhiḥ ॥13-17-2॥
[ब्रह्मप्रोक्तैः (brahmaproktaiḥ) - by those spoken by Brahman; ऋषिप्रोक्तैः (ṛṣiproktaiḥ) - by those spoken by sages; वेदवेदाङ्गसम्भवैः (vedavedāṅgasambhavaiḥ) - arisen from Veda and Vedāṅga; सर्वलोकेषु (sarvalokeṣu) - in all worlds; विख्यातैः (vikhyātaiḥ) - well-known; स्थाणुं (sthāṇum) - Sthāṇu (Śiva); स्तोष्यामि (stoṣyāmi) - I shall praise; नामभिः (nāmabhiḥ) - with names;]
(By those spoken by Brahman, by those spoken by sages, arisen from Veda and Vedāṅga, well-known in all worlds, I shall praise Sthāṇu with names.)
I shall praise Sthāṇu (Śiva) with names that are spoken by Brahman, by sages, arisen from the Veda and Vedāṅgas, and renowned in all the worlds. (13-17-2)
महद्भिर्विहितैः सत्यैः सिद्धैः सर्वार्थसाधकैः। ऋषिणा तण्डिना भक्त्या कृतैर्देवकृतात्मना ॥१३-१७-३॥
mahadbhir vihitaiḥ satyaiḥ siddhaiḥ sarvārthasādhakaiḥ। ṛṣiṇā taṇḍinā bhaktyā kṛtaiḥ devakṛtātmanā ॥13-17-3॥
[महद्भिः (mahadbhiḥ) - by the great ones; विहितैः (vihitaiḥ) - by those which are established; सत्यैः (satyaiḥ) - by truths; सिद्धैः (siddhaiḥ) - by those which are accomplished; सर्वार्थसाधकैः (sarvārthasādhakaiḥ) - by those which accomplish all purposes; ऋषिणा (ṛṣiṇā) - by the sage; तण्डिना (taṇḍinā) - by Taṇḍin; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - with devotion; कृतैः (kṛtaiḥ) - by those which are made; देवकृतात्मना (devakṛtātmanā) - with a mind made by the gods;]
(By the great ones, by those which are established, by truths, by those which are accomplished, by those which accomplish all purposes; by the sage Taṇḍin, with devotion, by those which are made, with a mind made by the gods.)
With devotion, the sage Taṇḍin, possessing a mind fashioned by the gods, composed these truths—great, established, accomplished, and fulfilling all purposes. (13-17-3)
यथोक्तैर्लोकविख्यातैर्मुनिभिस्तत्त्वदर्शिभिः। प्रवरं प्रथमं स्वर्ग्यं सर्वभूतहितं शुभम् ॥ श्रुतैः सर्वत्र जगति ब्रह्मलोकावतारितैः ॥१३-१७-४॥
yathoktairlokavikhyātairmunibhistattvadarśibhiḥ। pravaraṃ prathamaṃ svargyaṃ sarvabhūtahitaṃ śubham ॥ śrutaiḥ sarvatra jagati brahmalokāvatāritaiḥ ॥13-17-4॥
[यथोक्तैः (yathoktaiḥ) - as stated; by those who have spoken thus; लोकविख्यातैः (lokavikhyātaiḥ) - renowned in the world; मुनिभिः (munibhiḥ) - by sages; तत्त्वदर्शिभिः (tattvadarśibhiḥ) - by seers of truth; प्रवरं (pravaram) - excellent; प्रथमं (prathamam) - first; स्वर्ग्यं (svargyam) - leading to heaven; सर्वभूतहितं (sarvabhūtahitam) - beneficial to all beings; शुभम् (śubham) - auspicious; श्रुतैः (śrutaiḥ) - by scriptures; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; जगति (jagati) - in the world; ब्रह्मलोकावतारितैः (brahmalokāvatāritaiḥ) - brought down from the world of Brahma;]
(As stated by those who have spoken thus, renowned in the world, by sages, by seers of truth, the excellent, first, heavenly, beneficial to all beings, auspicious, by scriptures, everywhere, in the world, brought down from the world of Brahma.)
As declared by world-renowned sages and seers of truth, the excellent, foremost, heavenly, and auspicious teachings, beneficial to all beings, which are found everywhere in the world in the scriptures brought down from the world of Brahma. (13-17-4)
यत्तद्रहस्यं परमं ब्रह्मप्रोक्तं सनातनम्। वक्ष्ये यदुकुलश्रेष्ठ शृणुष्वावहितो मम ॥१३-१७-५॥
yattad-rahasyaṃ paramaṃ brahmaproktaṃ sanātanam। vakṣye yadukulaśreṣṭha śṛṇuṣvāvahito mama ॥13-17-5॥
[यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; रहस्यं (rahasyaṃ) - secret; परमं (paramaṃ) - supreme; ब्रह्मप्रोक्तं (brahmaproktaṃ) - declared by Brahman; सनातनम् (sanātanam) - eternal; वक्ष्ये (vakṣye) - I shall speak; यदुकुलश्रेष्ठ (yadukulaśreṣṭha) - O best of the Yadu lineage; शृणुष्व (śṛṇuṣva) - listen; आवहितः (āvahitaḥ) - attentively; मम (mama) - my;]
(Which that secret supreme declared by Brahman eternal I shall speak, O best of the Yadu lineage, listen attentively to my (words).)
O best of the Yadu lineage, listen attentively as I declare to you that supreme, eternal secret spoken by Brahman. (13-17-5)
परत्वेन भवं देवं भक्तस्त्वं परमेश्वरम्। तेन ते श्रावयिष्यामि यत्तद्ब्रह्म सनातनम् ॥१३-१७-६॥
paratvena bhavaṃ devaṃ bhaktastvaṃ parameśvaram। tena te śrāvayiṣyāmi yattadbrahma sanātanam ॥13-17-6॥
[परत्वेन (paratvena) - by otherness; by transcendence; भवम् (bhavam) - the becoming; the existence; देवम् (devam) - the god; भक्तः (bhaktaḥ) - devotee; त्वम् (tvam) - you; परमेश्वरम् (parameśvaram) - the supreme lord; तेन (tena) - by that; ते (te) - to you; श्रावयिष्यामि (śrāvayiṣyāmi) - I shall cause to be heard; I shall make hear; यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; सनातनम् (sanātanam) - eternal;]
(By transcendence, the becoming, the god, devotee you, the supreme lord; by that, to you, I shall cause to be heard, which that Brahman eternal.)
Because you are a devotee, you are the supreme lord, the god who is the becoming by transcendence; therefore, I shall tell you that which is the eternal Brahman. (13-17-6)
न शक्यं विस्तरात्कृत्स्नं वक्तुं शर्वस्य केनचित्। युक्तेनापि विभूतीनामपि वर्षशतैरपि ॥१३-१७-७॥
na śakyaṃ vistarātkṛtsnaṃ vaktuṃ śarvasya kenacit। yuktenāpi vibhūtīnāmapi varṣaśatairapi ॥13-17-7॥
[न (na) - not; शक्यं (śakyaṃ) - possible; विस्तरात् (vistarāt) - in detail; कृत्स्नं (kṛtsnam) - entirely; वक्तुं (vaktum) - to speak; शर्वस्य (śarvasya) - of Śarva (Śiva); केनचित् (kenacit) - by anyone; युक्तेन (yuktena) - by one who is competent; अपि (api) - even; विभूतीनाम् (vibhūtīnām) - of the glories; अपि (api) - even; वर्षशतैः (varṣaśataiḥ) - with hundreds of years; अपि (api) - even;]
(Not possible in detail entirely to speak of Śarva's by anyone, even by one who is competent, even of the glories, even with hundreds of years.)
It is not possible for anyone, even one who is competent, to describe in full detail all the glories of Śarva (Śiva), even if given hundreds of years. (13-17-7)
यस्यादिर्मध्यमन्तश्च सुरैरपि न गम्यते। कस्तस्य शक्नुयाद्वक्तुं गुणान्कार्त्स्न्येन माधव ॥१३-१७-८॥
yasyādir-madhyam-antaś-ca surair-api na gamyate। kas-tasya śaknuyād vaktuṃ guṇān kārtsnyena mādhava ॥13-17-8॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; आदि (ādi) - beginning; मध्यम् (madhyam) - middle; अन्तः (antaḥ) - end; च (ca) - and; सुरैः (suraiḥ) - by the gods; अपि (api) - even; न (na) - not; गम्यते (gamyate) - is reached; कः (kaḥ) - who; तस्य (tasya) - his; शक्नुयात् (śaknuyāt) - could be able; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; गुणान् (guṇān) - qualities; कार्त्स्न्येन (kārtsnyena) - in entirety; माधव (mādhava) - O Mādhava;]
(Of whom beginning, middle, and end even by the gods is not reached; who of his could be able to speak qualities in entirety, O Mādhava (13-17-8))
O Mādhava, whose beginning, middle, and end are not reached even by the gods—who could possibly describe his qualities in their entirety? (13-17-8)
किं तु देवस्य महतः सङ्क्षिप्तार्थपदाक्षरम्। शक्तितश्चरितं वक्ष्ये प्रसादात्तस्य चैव हि ॥१३-१७-९॥
kiṁ tu devasya mahataḥ saṅkṣiptārthapadākṣaram। śaktitaś caritaṁ vakṣye prasādāt tasya caiva hi ॥13-17-9॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; तु (tu) - but; देवस्य (devasya) - of the god; महतः (mahataḥ) - of the great; सङ्क्षिप्तार्थपदाक्षरम् (saṅkṣiptārthapadākṣaram) - condensed-meaning-word-letter; शक्तितः (śaktitaḥ) - according to ability; चरितं (caritaṁ) - deed; वक्ष्ये (vakṣye) - I shall speak; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by grace; तस्य (tasya) - of him; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - certainly;]
(What but of the god of the great condensed-meaning-word-letter according to ability deed I shall speak by grace of him and indeed certainly.)
But what I shall narrate, by his grace and to the best of my ability, is the condensed account of the great god's deeds in brief words and letters. (13-17-9)
अप्राप्येह ततोऽनुज्ञां न शक्यः स्तोतुमीश्वरः। यदा तेनाभ्यनुज्ञातः स्तुवत्येव सदा भवम् ॥१३-१७-१०॥
aprāpyeha tato'nujñāṃ na śakyaḥ stotumīśvaraḥ। yadā tenābhyanujñātaḥ stuvatyeva sadā bhavam ॥13-17-10॥
[अप्राप्य (aprāpya) - not having obtained; इह (iha) - here; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; अनुज्ञाम् (anujñām) - permission; न (na) - not; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; स्तोतुम् (stotum) - to praise; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - the Lord; यदा (yadā) - when; तेन (tena) - by him; अभ्यनुज्ञातः (abhyanujñātaḥ) - having been especially permitted; स्तुवति (stuvati) - praises; एव (eva) - indeed; सदा (sadā) - always; भवम् (bhavam) - the Lord;]
(Not having obtained here thereafter permission, not possible to praise the Lord; when by him having been especially permitted, indeed always praises the Lord. (13-17-10))
Without obtaining permission hereafter, it is not possible to praise the Lord; only when one is specially permitted by Him does one always praise the Lord. (13-17-10)
अनादिनिधनस्याहं सर्वयोनेर्महात्मनः। नाम्नां कञ्चित्समुद्देशं वक्ष्ये ह्यव्यक्तयोनिनः ॥१३-१७-११॥
anādinidhanasyāhaṃ sarvayonirmahātmanaḥ। nāmnāṃ kañcitsamuddeśaṃ vakṣye hyavyaktayoninaḥ ॥13-17-11॥
[अनादिनिधनस्य (anādinidhanasya) - of the one without beginning and end; अहम् (aham) - I; सर्वयोनेः (sarvayoneḥ) - of all sources; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great soul; नाम्नाम् (nāmnām) - of names; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - some; समुद्देशम् (samuddeśam) - indication; वक्ष्ये (vakṣye) - I shall declare; हि (hi) - indeed; अव्यक्तयोनिनः (avyaktayoninaḥ) - of the one whose source is unmanifest;]
(Of the one without beginning and end, I, of all sources, of the great soul, of names, some indication I shall declare indeed, of the one whose source is unmanifest.)
I shall now declare some indication of the names of the great soul, the one without beginning or end, the source of all, whose origin is unmanifest. (13-17-11)
वरदस्य वरेण्यस्य विश्वरूपस्य धीमतः। शृणु नामसमुद्देशं यदुक्तं पद्मयोनिना ॥१३-१७-१२॥
varadasya vareṇyasya viśvarūpasya dhīmataḥ। śṛṇu nāmasamuddeśaṃ yad uktaṃ padmayoninā ॥13-17-12॥
[वरदस्य (varadasya) - of the giver of boons; वरेण्यस्य (vareṇyasya) - of the most excellent; विश्वरूपस्य (viśvarūpasya) - of the one of universal form; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - of the wise; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; नामसमुद्देशं (nāmasamuddeśaṃ) - the enumeration of names; यत् (yat) - which; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - has been spoken; पद्मयोनिना (padmayoninā) - by the lotus-born;]
(Of the giver of boons, of the most excellent, of the one of universal form, of the wise; hear the enumeration of names which has been spoken by the lotus-born.)

दश नामसहस्राणि यान्याह प्रपितामहः। तानि निर्मथ्य मनसा दध्नो घृतमिवोद्धृतम् ॥१३-१७-१३॥
daśa nāmasahasrāṇi yāny āha prapitāmahaḥ। tāni nirmathya manasā dadhno ghṛtam ivoddhṛtam ॥13-17-13॥
[दश (daśa) - ten; नामसहस्राणि (nāmasahasrāṇi) - name-thousands; यानि (yāni) - which; आह (āha) - spoke; प्रपितामहः (prapitāmahaḥ) - great-grandfather; तानि (tāni) - those; निर्मथ्य (nirmathya) - having churned; मनसा (manasā) - with mind; दध्नः (dadhnaḥ) - of curd; घृतम् (ghṛtam) - ghee; इव (iva) - like; उद्धृतम् (uddhṛtam) - extracted;]
(Ten name-thousands which spoke great-grandfather; those having churned with mind of curd ghee like extracted.)
The ten thousand names which the great-grandfather spoke, having been churned with the mind, are extracted like ghee from curd. (13-17-13)
गिरेः सारं यथा हेम पुष्पात्सारं यथा मधु। घृतात्सारं यथा मण्डस्तथैतत्सारमुद्धृतम् ॥१३-१७-१४॥
gireḥ sāraṃ yathā hema puṣpātsāraṃ yathā madhu। ghṛtātsāraṃ yathā maṇḍastathaitatsāramuddhṛtam ॥13-17-14॥
[गिरेः (gireḥ) - of the mountain; सारं (sāram) - essence; यथा (yathā) - just as; हेम (hema) - gold; पुष्पात् (puṣpāt) - from the flower; सारं (sāram) - essence; यथा (yathā) - just as; मधु (madhu) - honey; घृतात् (ghṛtāt) - from ghee; सारं (sāram) - essence; यथा (yathā) - just as; मण्डः (maṇḍaḥ) - curd-essence; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; एतत् (etat) - this; सारम् (sāram) - essence; उद्धृतम् (uddhṛtam) - extracted;]
(Of the mountain essence just as gold; from the flower essence just as honey; from ghee essence just as curd-essence; in the same way this essence is extracted.)
Just as gold is the essence of the mountain, honey is the essence from the flower, and curd-essence is the essence from ghee, in the same way, this is the extracted essence. (13-17-14)
सर्वपाप्मापहमिदं चतुर्वेदसमन्वितम्। प्रयत्नेनाधिगन्तव्यं धार्यं च प्रयतात्मना ॥ शान्तिकं पौष्टिकं चैव रक्षोघ्नं पावनं महत् ॥१३-१७-१५॥
sarvapāpmāpaham idaṃ caturvedasamanvitam। prayatnenādhigantavyaṃ dhāryaṃ ca prayatātmanā ॥ śāntikaṃ pauṣṭikaṃ caiva rakṣoghnaṃ pāvanaṃ mahat ॥13-17-15॥
[सर्वपाप्मापहम् (sarvapāpmāpaham) - removing all sin; इदं (idaṃ) - this; चतुर्वेदसमन्वितम् (caturvedasamanvitam) - endowed with the four Vedas; प्रयत्नेन (prayatnena) - with effort; अधिगन्तव्यम् (adhigantavyam) - to be attained; धार्यम् (dhāryam) - to be upheld; च (ca) - and; प्रयतात्मना (prayatātmanā) - by the self-controlled; शान्तिकम् (śāntikam) - bringing peace; पौष्टिकम् (pauṣṭikam) - nourishing; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; रक्षोघ्नम् (rakṣoghnam) - destroying evil beings; पावनम् (pāvanam) - purifying; महत् (mahat) - great;]
(This, endowed with the four Vedas, removing all sin, is to be attained with effort, to be upheld by the self-controlled, bringing peace, nourishing, indeed, destroying evil beings, purifying, great.)
This, which is endowed with the four Vedas and removes all sin, should be attained with effort and upheld by the self-controlled; it brings peace, nourishment, destroys evil beings, purifies, and is great. (13-17-15)
इदं भक्ताय दातव्यं श्रद्दधानास्तिकाय च। नाश्रद्दधानरूपाय नास्तिकायाजितात्मने ॥१३-१७-१६॥
idaṁ bhaktāya dātavyaṁ śraddadhānāstikāya ca। nāśraddadhānarūpāya nāstikāyājitātmane ॥13-17-16॥
[इदं (idaṁ) - this; भक्ताय (bhaktāya) - to the devotee; दातव्यं (dātavyam) - should be given; श्रद्दधानास्तिकाय (śraddadhānāstikāya) - to the faithful and believing one; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; अश्रद्दधानरूपाय (aśraddadhānarūpāya) - to one of the form of faithless; नास्तिकाय (nāstikāya) - to the non-believer; अजितात्मने (ajitātmane) - to one whose self is not conquered;]
(This should be given to the devotee, to the faithful and believing one, and not to one of the form of faithless, not to the non-believer, not to one whose self is not conquered. (13-17-16))

यश्चाभ्यसूयते देवं भूतात्मानं पिनाकिनम्। स कृष्ण नरकं याति सह पूर्वैः सहानुगैः ॥१३-१७-१७॥
yaś cābhyasūyate devaṃ bhūtātmānaṃ pinākinam। sa kṛṣṇa narakaṃ yāti saha pūrvaiḥ sahānugaiḥ ॥13-17-17॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; अभ्यसूयते (abhyasūyate) - envies; देवम् (devam) - the god; भूतात्मानम् (bhūtātmānam) - the soul of beings; पिनाकिनम् (pinākinam) - the wielder of Pināka (Śiva); सः (saḥ) - he; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - certainly; नरकं (narakaṃ) - hell; याति (yāti) - goes; सह (saha) - with; पूर्वैः (pūrvaiḥ) - with the former ones; सहानुगैः (sahānugaiḥ) - with their followers;]
(Who and envies the god, the soul of beings, the wielder of Pināka; he certainly goes to hell with the former ones, with their followers.)
Whoever envies the god, the soul of beings, the wielder of Pināka (Śiva), he certainly goes to hell along with his predecessors and their followers. (13-17-17)
इदं ध्यानमिदं योगमिदं ध्येयमनुत्तमम्। इदं जप्यमिदं ज्ञानं रहस्यमिदमुत्तमम् ॥ इदं ज्ञात्वान्तकालेऽपि गच्छेद्धि परमां गतिम् ॥१३-१७-१८॥
idaṃ dhyānam idaṃ yogam idaṃ dhyeyam anuttamam। idaṃ japyam idaṃ jñānaṃ rahasyam idam uttamam ॥ idaṃ jñātvā antakāle'pi gacchet hi paramāṃ gatim ॥13-17-18॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; ध्यानम् (dhyānam) - meditation; इदं (idaṃ) - this; योगम् (yogam) - union; इदं (idaṃ) - this; ध्येयम् (dhyeyam) - object of meditation; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; इदं (idaṃ) - this; जप्यम् (japyam) - to be recited; इदं (idaṃ) - this; ज्ञानम् (jñānam) - knowledge; रहस्यं (rahasyam) - secret; इदं (idaṃ) - this; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme; इदं (idaṃ) - this; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; अन्तकाले (antakāle) - at the end time; अपि (api) - even; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - may go; हि (hi) - indeed; परमां (paramāṃ) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - state;]
(This meditation, this union, this object of meditation unsurpassed; this to be recited, this knowledge, secret, this supreme. This having known, at the end time even, may go indeed to the supreme state.)
This is meditation, this is union, this is the unsurpassed object of meditation; this is to be recited, this is knowledge, this is the supreme secret. Having known this, even at the time of death, one indeed attains the supreme state. (13-17-18)
पवित्रं मङ्गलं पुण्यं कल्याणमिदमुत्तमम्। निगदिष्ये महाबाहो स्तवानामुत्तमं स्तवम् ॥१३-१७-१९॥
pavitraṃ maṅgalaṃ puṇyaṃ kalyāṇam idam uttamam। nigadiṣye mahābāho stavānām uttamaṃ stavam ॥13-17-19॥

इदं ब्रह्मा पुरा कृत्वा सर्वलोकपितामहः। सर्वस्तवानां दिव्यानां राजत्वे समकल्पयत् ॥१३-१७-२०॥

तदाप्रभृति चैवायमीश्वरस्य महात्मनः। स्तवराजेति विख्यातो जगत्यमरपूजितः ॥ ब्रह्मलोकादयं चैव स्तवराजोऽवतारितः ॥१३-१७-२१॥

(Then from that time indeed this king of hymns of the Lord, the great-souled, thus well-known in the world, worshipped by the immortals. From Brahma's world this king of hymns indeed has descended.)
From that time, this king of hymns of the great-souled Lord has been renowned in the world and worshipped by the immortals. This king of hymns has also descended from Brahma's world. (13-17-21)
यस्मात्तण्डिः पुरा प्राह तेन तण्डिकृतोऽभवत्। स्वर्गाच्चैवात्र भूलोकं तण्डिना ह्यवतारितः ॥१३-१७-२२॥
yasmāttaṇḍiḥ purā prāha tena taṇḍikṛto'bhavat। svargāccaivātra bhūlokaṃ taṇḍinā hyavataritaḥ ॥13-17-22॥

(Because of which Taṇḍi formerly spoke, by him he became made Taṇḍi. From heaven indeed here to the earthly world by Taṇḍi indeed (he was) brought down.)
Because Taṇḍi had formerly spoken, he became known as Taṇḍi. And from heaven, Taṇḍi indeed brought him down to this earthly world. (13-17-22)
सर्वमङ्गलमङ्गल्यं सर्वपापप्रणाशनम्। निगदिष्ये महाबाहो स्तवानामुत्तमं स्तवम् ॥१३-१७-२३॥
sarvamaṅgalamaṅgalyaṃ sarvapāpapraṇāśanam। nigadiṣye mahābāho stavānāmuttamaṃ stavam ॥13-17-23॥

That which is Brahman even among the Vedas, that which is supreme even among the supreme, that which is radiance even among the radiant, that which is austerity even among the austere—such is He. (13-17-24)
शान्तीनामपि या शान्तिर्द्युतीनामपि या द्युतिः। दान्तानामपि यो दान्तो धीमतामपि या च धीः ॥१३-१७-२५॥

देवानामपि यो देवो मुनीनामपि यो मुनिः। यज्ञानामपि यो यज्ञः शिवानामपि यः शिवः ॥१३-१७-२६॥

रुद्राणामपि यो रुद्रः प्रभुः प्रभवतामपि। योगिनामपि यो योगी कारणानां च कारणम् ॥१३-१७-२७॥
rudrāṇām api yo rudraḥ prabhuḥ prabhavatām api। yoginām api yo yogī kāraṇānāṃ ca kāraṇam ॥13-17-27॥

यतो लोकाः सम्भवन्ति न भवन्ति यतः पुनः। सर्वभूतात्मभूतस्य हरस्यामिततेजसः ॥१३-१७-२८॥
yato lokāḥ sambhavanti na bhavanti yataḥ punaḥ। sarvabhūtātmabhūtasya harasyāmitatejasaḥ ॥13-17-28॥

aṣṭottarasahasraṃ tu nāmnāṃ śarvasya me śṛṇu। yacchrutvā manujaśreṣṭha sarvānkāmānavāpsyasi ॥13-17-29॥

tejopahārī balahā mudito'rtho jito varaḥ। gambhīraghoṣo gambhīro gambhīrabalavāhanaḥ ॥13-17-52॥

vimukto muktatejāś ca śrīmāñ śrīvardhano jagat। yathāpradhānaṃ bhagavān iti bhaktyā stuto mayā ॥13-17-150॥

यं न ब्रह्मादयो देवा विदुर्यं न महर्षयः। तं स्तव्यमर्च्यं वन्द्यं च कः स्तोष्यति जगत्पतिम् ॥१३-१७-१५१॥
yaṃ na brahmādayo devā vidur yaṃ na maharṣayaḥ। taṃ stavyam arcyaṃ vandyaṃ ca kaḥ stoṣyati jagatpatim ॥13-17-151॥

(Whom not Brahmā and others gods know, whom not great sages (know); him to be praised, to be worshipped, to be saluted and who will praise the lord of the world.)
Who can praise the Lord of the world, whom even Brahmā and other gods, and the great sages, do not know; who is to be praised, worshipped, and saluted? (13-17-151)
भक्तिमेव पुरस्कृत्य मया यज्ञपतिर्वसुः। ततोऽभ्यनुज्ञां प्राप्यैव स्तुतो मतिमतां वरः ॥१३-१७-१५२॥
bhaktimeva puraskṛtya mayā yajñapatirvasuḥ। tato'bhyanujñāṃ prāpyaiva stuto matimatāṃ varaḥ ॥13-17-152॥

(Devotion indeed having placed in front by me, the lord of sacrifice Vasu; then permission having obtained indeed, praised by the best of the wise.)

शिवमेभिः स्तुवन्देवं नामभिः पुष्टिवर्धनैः। नित्ययुक्तः शुचिर्भूत्वा प्राप्नोत्यात्मानमात्मना ॥१३-१७-१५३॥
śivam ebhiḥ stuvan devaṃ nāmabhiḥ puṣṭi-vardhanaiḥ। nitya-yuktaḥ śuciḥ bhūtvā prāpnoti ātmānam ātmanā ॥13-17-153॥
[शिवम् (śivam) - auspicious; benevolent; एभिः (ebhiḥ) - by these; स्तुवन् (stuvan) - praising; देवम् (devam) - the god; नामभिः (nāmabhiḥ) - by names; पुष्टि-वर्धनैः (puṣṭi-vardhanaiḥ) - which increase prosperity; नित्ययुक्तः (nitya-yuktaḥ) - constantly engaged; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - the self; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by the self;]
(Auspicious by these, praising the god by names which increase prosperity, constantly engaged, having become pure, attains the self by the self.)

(This indeed supreme Brahman by oneself sung by the self-born; sages and indeed gods and praise by this that supreme.)

स्तूयमानो महादेवः प्रीयते चात्मनामभिः। भक्तानुकम्पी भगवानात्मसंस्थान्करोति तान् ॥१३-१७-१५५॥
stūyamāno mahādevaḥ prīyate cātmanāmabhiḥ। bhaktānukampī bhagavān ātmasaṃsthān karoti tān ॥13-17-155॥

(Being praised, the great god is pleased and by his own names; compassionate to devotees, the Lord makes them established in the Self;)

तथैव च मनुष्येषु ये मनुष्याः प्रधानतः। आस्तिकाः श्रद्दधानाश्च बहुभिर्जन्मभिः स्तवैः ॥१३-१७-१५६॥
tathaiva ca manuṣyeṣu ye manuṣyāḥ pradhānataḥ। āstikāḥ śraddadhānāś ca bahubhir janmabhiḥ stavaiḥ ॥13-17-156॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; thus; just so; च (ca) - and; मनुष्येषु (manuṣyeṣu) - among men; ये (ye) - who; मनुष्याः (manuṣyāḥ) - men; प्रधानतः (pradhānataḥ) - chiefly; primarily; आस्तिकाः (āstikāḥ) - believers; those who have faith; श्रद्दधानाः (śraddadhānāḥ) - faithful; having faith; च (ca) - and; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - by many; जन्मभिः (janmabhiḥ) - births; स्तवैः (stavaiḥ) - by praises;]
(In the same way and among men, those men who are chiefly believers and faithful, by many births and by praises.)
Likewise, among men, those who are primarily believers and faithful, through many births and by praises, (are distinguished). (13-17-156)
जाग्रतश्च स्वपन्तश्च व्रजन्तः पथि संस्थिताः। स्तुवन्ति स्तूयमानाश्च तुष्यन्ति च रमन्ति च ॥ जन्मकोटिसहस्रेषु नानासंसारयोनिषु ॥१३-१७-१५७॥
jāgrataś ca svapantaś ca vrajantaḥ pathi saṃsthitāḥ। stuvanti stūyamānāś ca tuṣyanti ca ramanti ca ॥ janma-koṭi-sahasreṣu nānā-saṃsāra-yoniṣu ॥13-17-157॥
[जाग्रतः (jāgrataḥ) - awake; च (ca) - and; स्वपन्तः (svapantaḥ) - sleeping; च (ca) - and; व्रजन्तः (vrajantaḥ) - going; पथि (pathi) - on the path; संस्थिताः (saṃsthitāḥ) - standing; स्तुवन्ति (stuvanti) - they praise; स्तूयमानाः (stūyamānāḥ) - being praised; च (ca) - and; तुष्यन्ति (tuṣyanti) - they are satisfied; च (ca) - and; रमन्ति (ramanti) - they delight; च (ca) - and; जन्मकोटिसहस्रेषु (janma-koṭi-sahasreṣu) - in crores and thousands of births; नाना (nānā) - various; संसार (saṃsāra) - of worldly existence; योनिषु (yoniṣu) - in wombs;]
(Awake and sleeping and going on the path standing, they praise, being praised and are satisfied and delight and in crores and thousands of births in various worldly wombs.)
Whether awake or asleep, walking or standing on the path, they praise, are praised, are satisfied, and delight; in crores and thousands of births, in various worldly wombs. (13-17-157)
जन्तोर्विशुद्धपापस्य भवे भक्तिः प्रजायते। उत्पन्ना च भवे भक्तिरनन्या सर्वभावतः ॥१३-१७-१५८॥
jantor-viśuddha-pāpasya bhave bhaktiḥ prajāyate। utpannā ca bhave bhaktir-ananyā sarva-bhāvataḥ ॥13-17-158॥
[जन्तोः (jantoḥ) - of the being; विशुद्धपापस्य (viśuddha-pāpasya) - of one whose sins are purified; भवे (bhave) - in existence; भक्तिः (bhaktiḥ) - devotion; प्रजायते (prajāyate) - arises; उत्पन्ना (utpannā) - arisen; च (ca) - and; भवे (bhave) - in existence; भक्तिः (bhaktiḥ) - devotion; अनन्या (ananyā) - undivided; सर्वभावतः (sarva-bhāvataḥ) - from all dispositions;]
(Of the being whose sins are purified, in existence, devotion arises. And when devotion has arisen in existence, undivided, from all dispositions.)
When a being's sins are purified, devotion arises in their existence. Once devotion has arisen, it becomes undivided and encompasses all aspects of their being. (13-17-158)
कारणं भावितं तस्य सर्वमुक्तस्य सर्वतः। एतद्देवेषु दुष्प्रापं मनुष्येषु न लभ्यते ॥१३-१७-१५९॥
kāraṇaṃ bhāvitaṃ tasya sarvamuktasya sarvataḥ। etaddeveṣu duṣprāpaṃ manuṣyeṣu na labhyate ॥13-17-159॥

(The cause considered of him, of the completely liberated, from all sides; this among the gods is difficult to attain, among humans is not obtained. (13-17-159))

निर्विघ्ना निश्चला रुद्रे भक्तिरव्यभिचारिणी। तस्यैव च प्रसादेन भक्तिरुत्पद्यते नृणाम् ॥ यया यान्ति परां सिद्धिं तद्भावगतचेतसः ॥१३-१७-१६०॥
nirvighnā niścalā rudre bhaktiravyabhicāriṇī। tasyaiva ca prasādena bhaktirutpadyate nṛṇām ॥ yayā yānti parāṃ siddhiṃ tadbhāvagatacetasaḥ ॥13-17-160॥
[निर्विघ्ना (nirvighnā) - free from obstacles; निश्चला (niścalā) - unwavering; रुद्रे (rudre) - in Rudra; भक्तिः (bhaktiḥ) - devotion; अव्यभिचारिणी (avyabhicāriṇī) - unswerving; तस्यैव (tasyaiva) - by his only; च (ca) - and; प्रसादेन (prasādena) - by grace; भक्तिः (bhaktiḥ) - devotion; उत्पद्यते (utpadyate) - arises; नृणाम् (nṛṇām) - of men; यया (yayā) - by which; यान्ति (yānti) - they go; पराम् (parām) - supreme; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - perfection; तद्भावगतचेतसः (tadbhāvagatacetasaḥ) - whose minds are absorbed in that state;]
(Free from obstacles, unwavering, in Rudra, devotion unswerving; by his only and by grace, devotion arises of men; by which they go to supreme perfection, whose minds are absorbed in that state. (13-17-160))
Devotion to Rudra that is free from obstacles, unwavering, and unswerving arises in people only by his grace; by such devotion, those whose minds are absorbed in that state attain the highest perfection. (13-17-160)
ये सर्वभावोपगताः परत्वेनाभवन्नराः। प्रपन्नवत्सलो देवः संसारात्तान्समुद्धरेत् ॥१३-१७-१६१॥
ye sarvabhāvopagatāḥ paratvenābhavannarāḥ। prapannavatsalo devaḥ saṁsārāttānsamuddharet ॥13-17-161॥
[ये (ye) - who; सर्वभावोपगताः (sarva-bhāva-upagatāḥ) - all-existences-attained; परत्वेन (paratvena) - as otherness; अभवन् (abhavan) - became; नराः (narāḥ) - men; प्रपन्नवत्सलः (prapanna-vatsalaḥ) - one who is affectionate to the surrendered; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; संसारात् (saṁsārāt) - from saṁsāra; तान् (tān) - them; समुद्धरेत् (samuddharet) - should uplift;]
(Who have attained all existences, became men as otherness; the god, affectionate to the surrendered, should uplift them from saṁsāra.)
Those men who have entered into all states of existence and have become as if separate, the god who is affectionate to those who surrender should uplift them from saṁsāra. (13-17-161)
एवमन्ये न कुर्वन्ति देवाः संसारमोचनम्। मनुष्याणां महादेवादन्यत्रापि तपोबलात् ॥१३-१७-१६२॥
evam anye na kurvanti devāḥ saṃsāramocanam। manuṣyāṇāṃ mahādevād anyatrāpi tapobalāt ॥13-17-162॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; in this way; अन्ये (anye) - others; न (na) - not; कुर्वन्ति (kurvanti) - do; perform; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; संसारमोचनम् (saṃsāramocanam) - release from saṃsāra; liberation from worldly existence; मनुष्याणां (manuṣyāṇām) - of men; of human beings; महादेवात् (mahādevāt) - from Mahādeva; from the great god; अन्यत्र (anyatra) - elsewhere; apart from; अपि (api) - even; also; तपोबलात् (tapobalāt) - by the power of austerity; from the strength of penance;]
(Thus, others, not, do, gods, release from saṃsāra, of men, from Mahādeva, elsewhere, even, by the power of austerity.)
Thus, other gods do not grant release from saṃsāra for men; apart from Mahādeva, even by the power of austerity. (13-17-162)
इति तेनेन्द्रकल्पेन भगवान्सदसत्पतिः। कृत्तिवासाः स्तुतः कृष्ण तण्डिना शुद्धबुद्धिना ॥१३-१७-१६३॥
iti tenendrakalpena bhagavān sadasatpatiḥ। kṛttivāsāḥ stutaḥ kṛṣṇa taṇḍinā śuddhabuddhinā ॥13-17-163॥
[इति (iti) - thus; तेन (tena) - by him; इन्द्रकल्पेन (indrakalpena) - like Indra; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; सदसत्पतिः (sadasatpatiḥ) - lord of the existent and non-existent; कृत्तिवासाः (kṛttivāsāḥ) - one who wears a hide; स्तुतः (stutaḥ) - praised; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Kṛṣṇa; तण्डिना (taṇḍinā) - by Taṇḍin; शुद्धबुद्धिना (śuddhabuddhinā) - with pure intellect;]
(Thus, by him, like Indra, the Lord, lord of the existent and non-existent, one who wears a hide, was praised, O Kṛṣṇa, by Taṇḍin with pure intellect.)
Thus, O Kṛṣṇa, the Lord, the master of existence and non-existence, the hide-clad one, was praised by Taṇḍin of pure intellect, who was like Indra. (13-17-163)
स्तवमेतं भगवतो ब्रह्मा स्वयमधारयत्। ब्रह्मा प्रोवाच शक्राय शक्रः प्रोवाच मृत्यवे ॥१३-१७-१६४॥

मार्कण्डेयान्मया प्राप्तं नियमेन जनार्दन। तवाप्यहममित्रघ्न स्तवं दद्म्यद्य विश्रुतम् ॥ स्वर्ग्यमारोग्यमायुष्यं धन्यं बल्यं तथैव च ॥१३-१७-१६९॥
mārkaṇḍeyān mayā prāptaṃ niyamena janārdana। tavāpy aham amitraghna stavaṃ dadmy adya viśrutam ॥ svargyam ārogyam āyuṣyaṃ dhanyaṃ balyaṃ tathaiva ca ॥13-17-169॥

(From Mārkaṇḍeya, by me, obtained, by discipline, O Janārdana; to you also, I, O destroyer of enemies, hymn, give, today, famous. Leading to heaven, health-giving, life-giving, prosperous, strength-giving, likewise and.)
O Janārdana, this famous hymn, which I obtained from Mārkaṇḍeya through discipline, I now give to you, O destroyer of enemies. It bestows heaven, health, long life, prosperity, and strength, and so forth. (13-17-169)
न तस्य विघ्नं कुर्वन्ति दानवा यक्षराक्षसाः। पिशाचा यातुधानाश्च गुह्यका भुजगा अपि ॥१३-१७-१७०॥
na tasya vighnaṃ kurvanti dānavā yakṣarākṣasāḥ। piśācā yātudhānāś ca guhyakā bhujagā api ॥13-17-170॥
[न (na) - not; तस्य (tasya) - of him; विघ्नं (vighnam) - obstacle; कुर्वन्ति (kurvanti) - do; दानवा (dānavāḥ) - dānavas; यक्षराक्षसाः (yakṣarākṣasāḥ) - yakṣas and rākṣasas; पिशाचा (piśācāḥ) - piśācas; यातुधानाश्च (yātudhānāś ca) - yātudhānas and; गुह्यका (guhyakāḥ) - guhyakas; भुजगा (bhujagāḥ) - serpents; अपि (api) - even;]
(Not of him obstacle do dānavas, yakṣas and rākṣasas, piśācas, yātudhānas and guhyakas, serpents even.)
Neither dānavas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, piśācas, yātudhānas, guhyakas, nor even serpents create obstacles for him. (13-17-170)
यः पठेत शुचिर्भूत्वा ब्रह्मचारी जितेन्द्रियः। अभग्नयोगो वर्षं तु सोऽश्वमेधफलं लभेत् ॥१३-१७-१७१॥
yaḥ paṭhet śucirbhūtvā brahmacārī jitendriyaḥ। abhagnayogo varṣaṃ tu so'śvamedhaphalaṃ labhet ॥13-17-171॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; पठेत् (paṭhet) - should recite; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - celibate; जितेन्द्रियः (jitendriyaḥ) - one who has conquered the senses; अभग्नयोगः (abhagnayogaḥ) - whose practice is unbroken; वर्षम् (varṣam) - year; तु (tu) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; अश्वमेधफलं (aśvamedhaphalam) - fruit of the horse-sacrifice; लभेत् (labhet) - obtains;]
(Who should recite, having become pure, a celibate, one who has conquered the senses, whose practice is unbroken, for a year indeed, he obtains the fruit of the horse-sacrifice.)
Whoever recites this, having become pure, observing celibacy, with self-control, and with unbroken practice for a year, indeed attains the fruit of the horse-sacrifice. (13-17-171)
