किं राज्ञः सर्वकृत्यानां गरीयः स्यात्पितामह। किं कुर्वन्कर्म नृपतिरुभौ लोकौ समश्नुते ॥१३-३३-१॥
kiṁ rājñaḥ sarvakṛtyānāṁ garīyaḥ syātpitāmaha। kiṁ kurvankarma nṛpatirubhau lokau samaśnute ॥13-33-1॥

एतद्राज्ञः कृत्यतममभिषिक्तस्य भारत। ब्राह्मणानामनुष्ठानमत्यन्तं सुखमिच्छता ॥ श्रोत्रियान्ब्राह्मणान्वृद्धान्नित्यमेवाभिपूजयेत् ॥१३-३३-२॥
etad rājñaḥ kṛtyatamam abhiṣiktasya bhārata। brāhmaṇānām anuṣṭhānam atyantaṃ sukham icchatā ॥ śrotriyān brāhmaṇān vṛddhān nityam eva abhipūjayet ॥13-33-2॥
[एतत् (etad) - this; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; कृत्यतमम् (kṛtyatamam) - most obligatory duty; अभिषिक्तस्य (abhiṣiktasya) - of the anointed (king); भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; अनुष्ठानम् (anuṣṭhānam) - performance; अत्यन्तम् (atyantam) - extremely; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; इच्छता (icchatā) - by one desiring; श्रोत्रियान् (śrotriyān) - learned in the Vedas; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - Brāhmaṇas; वृद्धान् (vṛddhān) - elders; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; एव (eva) - indeed; अभिपूजयेत् (abhipūjayet) - should especially honor;]
(This is the most obligatory duty of the king, O Bhārata, of the anointed: by one desiring extreme happiness, the performance of Brāhmaṇas. One should always indeed especially honor learned Brāhmaṇas and elders.)

पौरजानपदांश्चापि ब्राह्मणांश्च बहुश्रुतान्। सान्त्वेन भोगदानेन नमस्कारैस्तथार्चयेत् ॥१३-३३-३॥
paurajanapadāṁścāpi brāhmaṇāṁśca bahuśrutān। sāntvena bhogadānena namaskāraistathārcayet ॥13-33-3॥
[पौर (paura) - of townsmen; जानपदान् (jānapadān) - of country people; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; बहुश्रुतान् (bahuśrutān) - well-learned; सान्त्वेन (sāntvena) - with conciliation; भोगदानेन (bhogadānena) - with the giving of enjoyments; नमस्कारैः (namaskāraiḥ) - with salutations; तथा (tathā) - thus; अर्चयेत् (arcayet) - should honor;]
(of townsmen, of country people and also brāhmaṇas and well-learned, with conciliation, with the giving of enjoyments, with salutations, thus should honor.)
He should honor the townsmen, country people, brāhmaṇas, and the well-learned with conciliation, gifts of enjoyments, and salutations in this manner. (13-33-3)
एतत्कृत्यतमं राज्ञो नित्यमेवेति लक्षयेत्। यथात्मानं यथा पुत्रांस्तथैतान्परिपालयेत् ॥१३-३३-४॥
etatkṛtyatamaṃ rājño nityameveti lakṣayet। yathātmānaṃ yathā putrāṃstathaitānparipālayet ॥13-33-4॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; कृत्यतमं (kṛtyatamam) - most to be done; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; एव (eva) - indeed; इति (iti) - thus; लक्षयेत् (lakṣayet) - should consider; यथा (yathā) - just as; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; यथा (yathā) - just as; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; तथा (tathā) - so; एतान् (etān) - these; परिपालयेत् (paripālayet) - should protect;]
(This most to be done of the king always indeed thus should consider; just as himself, just as sons, so these should protect;)
He should always consider this as the foremost duty of a king; just as he protects himself and his sons, so should he protect these (subjects). (13-33-4)
ये चाप्येषां पूज्यतमास्तान्दृढं प्रतिपूजयेत्। तेषु शान्तेषु तद्राष्ट्रं सर्वमेव विराजते ॥१३-३३-५॥
ye cāpy eṣāṃ pūjyatamās tān dṛḍhaṃ pratipūjayet। teṣu śānteṣu tad rāṣṭraṃ sarvam eva virājate ॥13-33-5॥

(Who and also among these, the most venerable, them one should firmly honor in return. Among those peaceful ones, that kingdom indeed entirely shines. (13-33-5))

ते पूज्यास्ते नमस्कार्यास्ते रक्ष्याः पितरो यथा। तेष्वेव यात्रा लोकस्य भूतानामिव वासवे ॥१३-३३-६॥
te pūjyās te namaskāryās te rakṣyāḥ pitaro yathā। teṣveva yātrā lokasya bhūtānām iva vāsave ॥13-33-6॥
[ते (te) - they; those; पूज्याः (pūjyāḥ) - worthy of worship; to be honored; ते (te) - they; those; नमस्कार्याः (namaskāryāḥ) - worthy of salutation; to be bowed to; ते (te) - they; those; रक्ष्याः (rakṣyāḥ) - to be protected; worthy of protection; पितरः (pitaro) - fathers; ancestors; यथा (yathā) - just as; like; तेषु (teṣu) - in them; among them; एव (eva) - indeed; only; यात्रा (yātrā) - journey; movement; लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the world; of people; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; of creatures; इव (iva) - like; as; वासवे (vāsave) - in Indra; in the lord of beings;]
(They are worthy of worship; they are to be saluted; they are to be protected; just as fathers; in them indeed is the journey of the world; like the beings in Indra;)
They are worthy of worship, salutation, and protection, just as fathers; in them alone is the existence of the world, just as all beings exist in Indra. (13-33-6)
अभिचारैरुपायैश्च दहेयुरपि तेजसा। निःशेषं कुपिताः कुर्युरुग्राः सत्यपराक्रमाः ॥१३-३३-७॥
abhicārair upāyaiś ca daheyur api tejasā। niḥśeṣaṃ kupitāḥ kuryur ugrāḥ satyaparākramāḥ ॥13-33-7॥
[अभिचारैः (abhicāraiḥ) - by magical rites; उपायैः (upāyaiḥ) - by means; च (ca) - and; दहेयुः (daheyuḥ) - they might burn; अपि (api) - even; तेजसा (tejasā) - by energy; निःशेषं (niḥśeṣam) - completely; कुपिताः (kupitāḥ) - angered; कुर्युः (kuryuḥ) - they might do; उग्राः (ugrāḥ) - fierce; सत्यपराक्रमाः (satyaparākramāḥ) - truly powerful;]
(By magical rites, by means, and they might burn even by energy; completely, angered, they might do, fierce, truly powerful;)
The truly powerful and fierce, when angered, might completely destroy by magical rites, by various means, or even by their own energy. (13-33-7)
नान्तमेषां प्रपश्यामि न दिशश्चाप्यपावृताः। कुपिताः समुदीक्षन्ते दावेष्वग्निशिखा इव ॥१३-३३-८॥
nāntameṣāṃ prapaśyāmi na diśaścāpyapāvṛtāḥ। kupitāḥ samudīkṣante dāveṣvagniśikhā iva ॥13-33-8॥
[न (na) - not; अन्तम् (antam) - end; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; प्रपश्यामि (prapaśyāmi) - I see; न (na) - not; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अपावृताः (apāvṛtāḥ) - opened; कुपिताः (kupitāḥ) - angry; समुदीक्षन्ते (samudīkṣante) - look intently; दावेषु (dāveṣu) - in forest fires; अग्निशिखाः (agniśikhāḥ) - flames of fire; इव (iva) - like;]
(Not end of these I see, not directions also opened; angry (they) look intently like flames of fire in forest fires.)
I do not see the end of these, nor are any directions open; angrily they look on, like flames of fire in a forest fire. (13-33-8)
विद्यन्तेषां साहसिका गुणास्तेषामतीव हि। कूपा इव तृणच्छन्ना विशुद्धा द्यौरिवापरे ॥१३-३३-९॥
vidyanteṣāṃ sāhasikā guṇāsteṣāmatīva hi। kūpā iva tṛṇacchannā viśuddhā dyaurivāpare ॥13-33-9॥
[विद्यन्ते (vidyante) - are found; एषां (eṣāṃ) - in these; साहसिका (sāhasikā) - bold; गुणाः (guṇāḥ) - qualities; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; हि (hi) - indeed; कूपाः (kūpāḥ) - wells; इव (iva) - like; तृणच्छन्नाः (tṛṇacchannāḥ) - covered with grass; विशुद्धाः (viśuddhāḥ) - pure; द्यौः (dyaūḥ) - the sky; इव (iva) - like; अपरे (apare) - others;]
(In these, bold qualities are found, indeed exceedingly of them. Wells like covered with grass, pure, the sky like others.)
Among them, bold qualities are indeed found in great measure. Some are like wells covered with grass, while others are pure like the sky. (13-33-9)
प्रसह्यकारिणः केचित्कार्पासमृदवोऽपरे। सन्ति चैषामतिशठास्तथान्येऽतितपस्विनः ॥१३-३३-१०॥
prasahyakāriṇaḥ kecit kārpāsa-mṛdavaḥ apare। santi ca eṣām atiśaṭhāḥ tathā anye atitapasvinaḥ ॥13-33-10॥
[प्रसह्यकारिणः (prasahyakāriṇaḥ) - those who act forcibly; केचित् (kecit) - some; कार्पासमृदवः (kārpāsa-mṛdavaḥ) - soft as cotton; अपरे (apare) - others; सन्ति (santi) - are; च (ca) - and; एषाम् (eṣām) - among these; अतिशठाः (atiśaṭhāḥ) - very deceitful; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अन्ये (anye) - others; अतितपस्विनः (atitapasvinaḥ) - extremely austere;]
(Those who act forcibly; some; soft as cotton; others; are; and; among these; very deceitful; likewise; others; extremely austere.)

कृषिगोरक्ष्यमप्यन्ये भैक्षमन्येऽप्यनुष्ठिताः। चोराश्चान्येऽनृताश्चान्ये तथान्ये नटनर्तकाः ॥१३-३३-११॥
kṛṣigorakṣyam apy anye bhaikṣam anye'py anuṣṭhitāḥ। corāś cānye'nṛtāś cānye tathānye naṭanartakāḥ ॥13-33-11॥
[कृषि (kṛṣi) - agriculture; गोरक्ष्यम् (gorakṣyam) - cow-protection; अपि (api) - also; अन्ये (anye) - others; भैक्षम् (bhaikṣam) - alms; अन्ये (anye) - others; अपि (api) - also; अनुष्ठिताः (anuṣṭhitāḥ) - performed; चोराः (corāḥ) - thieves; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; अनृताः (anṛtāḥ) - liars; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अन्ये (anye) - others; नटनर्तकाः (naṭanartakāḥ) - actors and dancers;]

सर्वकर्मसु दृश्यन्ते प्रशान्तेष्वितरेषु च। विविधाचारयुक्ताश्च ब्राह्मणा भरतर्षभ ॥१३-३३-१२॥
sarvakarmasu dṛśyante praśānteṣv itareṣu ca। vividhācārayuktāś ca brāhmaṇā bharatarṣabha ॥13-33-12॥
[सर्वकर्मसु (sarvakarmasu) - in all actions; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; प्रशान्तेषु (praśānteṣu) - among the tranquil; इतरेषु (itareṣu) - among others; च (ca) - and; विविधाचारयुक्ताः (vividhācārayuktāḥ) - engaged in various practices; च (ca) - and; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(In all actions are seen, among the tranquil, among others and, engaged in various practices and Brāhmaṇas, O bull among the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, Brāhmaṇas are seen in all actions, among the tranquil and among others, and also engaged in various practices. (13-33-12)
नानाकर्मसु युक्तानां बहुकर्मोपजीविनाम्। धर्मज्ञानां सतां तेषां नित्यमेवानुकीर्तयेत् ॥१३-३३-१३॥
nānākarmasu yuktānāṃ bahukarmopajīvinām। dharmajñānāṃ satāṃ teṣāṃ nityamevā nukīrtayet ॥13-33-13॥
[नाना (nānā) - various; कर्मसु (karmasu) - in actions; युक्तानाम् (yuktānām) - of those engaged; बहु (bahu) - many; कर्म (karma) - actions; उपजीविनाम् (upajīvinām) - of those subsisting; धर्म (dharma) - of dharma; ज्ञानाम् (jñānām) - of knowledge; सताम् (satām) - of the good; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; एव (eva) - indeed; अनुकीर्तयेत् (anukīrtayet) - should recite;]
(Of those engaged in various actions, of those subsisting on many actions, of the good who possess knowledge of dharma, of them, one should always indeed recite.)
One should always recite the deeds of those good people who are engaged in various actions, who subsist by many kinds of work, and who possess knowledge of dharma. (13-33-13)
पितॄणां देवतानां च मनुष्योरगरक्षसाम्। पुरोहिता महाभागा ब्राह्मणा वै नराधिप ॥१३-३३-१४॥
pitṝṇāṃ devatānāṃ ca manuṣyoragarakṣasām। purohitā mahābhāgā brāhmaṇā vai narādhipa ॥13-33-14॥
[पितॄणां (pitṝṇām) - of the ancestors; देवतานां (devatānām) - of the deities; च (ca) - and; मनुष्य (manuṣya) - of men; उरग (uraga) - of serpents; रक्षसाम् (rakṣasām) - of the rākṣasas; पुरोहिता (purohitāḥ) - priests; महाभागा (mahābhāgāḥ) - greatly fortunate; ब्राह्मणा (brāhmaṇāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; वै (vai) - indeed; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king;]
(Of the ancestors, of the deities, and of men, serpents, and rākṣasas, the priests, greatly fortunate, brāhmaṇas indeed, O king.)
O king, the brāhmaṇas, who are greatly fortunate, are indeed the priests of the ancestors, the deities, men, serpents, and rākṣasas. (13-33-14)
नैते देवैर्न पितृभिर्न गन्धर्वैर्न राक्षसैः। नासुरैर्न पिशाचैश्च शक्या जेतुं द्विजातयः ॥१३-३३-१५॥
naite devair na pitṛbhir na gandharvair na rākṣasaiḥ। na asuraiḥ na piśācaiś ca śakyā jetuṃ dvijātayaḥ ॥13-33-15॥
[न (na) - not; एते (ete) - these; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by gods; न (na) - not; पितृभिः (pitṛbhiḥ) - by ancestors; न (na) - not; गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - by gandharvas; न (na) - not; राक्षसैः (rākṣasaiḥ) - by rākṣasas; न (na) - not; असुरैः (asuraiḥ) - by asuras; न (na) - not; पिशाचैः (piśācaiḥ) - by piśācas; च (ca) - and; शक्या (śakyā) - possible; जेतुम् (jetum) - to conquer; द्विजातयः (dvijātayaḥ) - the twice-born;]
(Not these by gods, not by ancestors, not by gandharvas, not by rākṣasas, not by asuras, not by piśācas and possible to conquer the twice-born.)
These twice-born cannot be conquered by gods, ancestors, gandharvas, rākṣasas, asuras, or piśācas. (13-33-15)
अदैवं दैवतं कुर्युर्दैवतं चाप्यदैवतम्। यमिच्छेयुः स राजा स्याद्यं द्विष्युः स पराभवेत् ॥१३-३३-१६॥
adaivaṃ daivataṃ kuryurdaivataṃ cāpyadaivatam। yamiccheyuḥ sa rājā syādyaṃ dviṣyuḥ sa parābhavet ॥13-33-16॥
[अदैवं (adaivaṃ) - not-divine; दैवतं (daivataṃ) - divine; कुर्युः (kuryuḥ) - they would make; दैवतं (daivataṃ) - divine; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अदैवतम् (adaivatam) - not-divine; यम् (yam) - whom; इच्छेयुः (iccheyuḥ) - they would desire; स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; यम् (yam) - whom; द्विष्युः (dviṣyuḥ) - they would hate; स (sa) - he; पराभवेत् (parābhavet) - would be defeated;]
(Not-divine divine they would make, divine and also not-divine. Whom they would desire, he king would be; whom they would hate, he would be defeated.)
They would make the undivine into the divine, and the divine also into the undivine. Whoever they desire, he becomes king; whoever they hate, he is defeated. (13-33-16)
परिवादं च ये कुर्युर्ब्राह्मणानामचेतसः। निन्दाप्रशंसाकुशलाः कीर्त्यकीर्तिपरावराः ॥ परिकुप्यन्ति ते राजन्सततं द्विषतां द्विजाः ॥१३-३३-१७॥
parivādaṃ ca ye kuryurbrāhmaṇānāmacetasaḥ। nindāpraśaṃsākuśalāḥ kīrtyakīrtiparāvarāḥ ॥ parikupyanti te rājansatataṃ dviṣatāṃ dvijāḥ ॥13-33-17॥
[परिवादं (parivādam) - slander; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; कुर्युः (kuryuḥ) - would do; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the brāhmaṇas; अचेतसः (acetasaḥ) - unwise; निन्दा (nindā) - blame; प्रशंसा (praśaṃsā) - praise; कुशलाः (kuśalāḥ) - skilled; कीर्ति (kīrti) - fame; अकीर्ति (akīrti) - infamy; परावराः (parāvarāḥ) - regarding high and low; परिकुप्यन्ति (parikupyanti) - become very angry; ते (te) - they; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सततम् (satatam) - always; द्विषताम् (dviṣatām) - of the enemies; द्विजाः (dvijāḥ) - the twice-born;]
(And those unwise who would do slander of the brāhmaṇas, skilled in blame and praise, regarding fame and infamy, they, O king, the twice-born, always become very angry at the enemies.)
O king, those unwise people who slander brāhmaṇas, who are skilled in blame and praise, and who distinguish between fame and infamy, the twice-born always become very angry with their enemies. (13-33-17)
ब्राह्मणा यं प्रशंसन्ति पुरुषः स प्रवर्धते। ब्राह्मणैर्यः पराक्रुष्टः पराभूयात्क्षणाद्धि सः ॥१३-३३-१८॥
brāhmaṇā yaṃ praśaṃsanti puruṣaḥ sa pravardhate। brāhmaṇairyah parākruṣṭaḥ parābhūyātkṣaṇāddhi saḥ ॥13-33-18॥
[ब्राह्मणा (brāhmaṇā) - by Brāhmaṇas; यं (yaṃ) - whom; प्रशंसन्ति (praśaṃsanti) - praise; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; स (sa) - he; प्रवर्धते (pravardhate) - prospers; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - by Brāhmaṇas; यः (yaḥ) - who; पराक्रुष्टः (parākruṣṭaḥ) - reviled; पराभूयात् (parābhūyāt) - should be defeated; क्षणात् (kṣaṇāt) - immediately; हि (hi) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(By Brāhmaṇas whom praise man he prospers. By Brāhmaṇas who reviled should be defeated immediately indeed he.)
A man whom the Brāhmaṇas praise prospers; but he who is reviled by the Brāhmaṇas should be defeated immediately. (13-33-18)
शका यवनकाम्बोजास्तास्ताः क्षत्रियजातयः। वृषलत्वं परिगता ब्राह्मणानामदर्शनात् ॥१३-३३-१९॥
śakā yavanakāmbojāstāstāḥ kṣatriyajātayaḥ। vṛṣalatvaṃ parigatā brāhmaṇānāmadarśanāt ॥13-33-19॥
[शका (śakā) - Śaka tribes; यवन (yavana) - Yavana (Greek/foreigner); काम्बोजाः (kāmbojāḥ) - Kāmboja tribes; ताः (tāḥ) - those; ताः (tāḥ) - those; क्षत्रियजातयः (kṣatriyajātayaḥ) - Kṣatriya castes; वृषलत्वं (vṛṣalatvaṃ) - state of being vṛṣala (outcaste); परिगता (parigatā) - have attained; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; अदर्शनात् (adarśanāt) - due to absence (of association);]
(Śaka, Yavana, Kāmboja—those, those Kṣatriya castes; state of being vṛṣala (outcaste) have attained; of the Brāhmaṇas due to absence (of association).)
The Śakas, Yavanas, and Kāmbojas—those Kṣatriya castes—have become outcastes due to the absence of association with Brāhmaṇas. (13-33-19)
द्रमिळाश्च कलिङ्गाश्च पुलिन्दाश्चाप्युशीनराः। कौलाः सर्पा माहिषकास्तास्ताः क्षत्रियजातयः ॥१३-३३-२०॥
dramiḷāś ca kaliṅgāś ca pulindāś cāpy uśīnarāḥ। kaulāḥ sarpā māhiṣakās tās tās kṣatriyajātayaḥ॥13-33-20॥
[द्रमिळाः (dramiḷāḥ) - Dravidians; च (ca) - and; कलिङ्गाः (kaliṅgāḥ) - Kalingas; च (ca) - and; पुलिन्दाः (pulindāḥ) - Pulindas; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; उशीनराः (uśīnarāḥ) - Ushinaras; कौलाः (kaulāḥ) - Kaulas; सर्पाः (sarpāḥ) - Sarpas; माहिषकाः (māhiṣakāḥ) - Mahishakas; ताः (tāḥ) - those; ताः (tāḥ) - those; क्षत्रियजातयः (kṣatriyajātayaḥ) - Kshatriya lineages;]
(Dravidians and Kalingas and Pulindas and also Ushinaras; Kaulas, Sarpas, Mahishakas, those, those, Kshatriya lineages.)
The Dravidians, Kalingas, Pulindas, and also the Ushinaras, as well as the Kaulas, Sarpas, and Mahishakas—these are all Kshatriya lineages. (13-33-20)
वृषलत्वं परिगता ब्राह्मणानामदर्शनात्। श्रेयान्पराजयस्तेभ्यो न जयो जयतां वर ॥१३-३३-२१॥
vṛṣalatvaṃ parigatā brāhmaṇānām adarśanāt। śreyān parājayas tebhyo na jayo jayatāṃ vara ॥13-33-21॥
[वृषलत्वं (vṛṣalatvaṃ) - state of being a śūdra; परिगता (parigatā) - has come upon; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the brāhmaṇas; अदर्शनात् (adarśanāt) - due to absence; श्रेयान् (śreyān) - better; पराजयः (parājayaḥ) - defeat; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - than them; न (na) - not; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory; जयतां (jayatāṃ) - of the victorious; वर (vara) - O best;]
(State of being a śūdra has come upon the brāhmaṇas due to absence; better is defeat than victory over them, O best of the victorious. (13-33-21))
Because of the absence of brāhmaṇas, the state of being a śūdra has come upon them; O best of the victorious, it is better to be defeated by them than to gain victory over them. (13-33-21)
यस्तु सर्वमिदं हन्याद्ब्राह्मणं च न तत्समम्। ब्रह्मवध्या महान्दोष इत्याहुः परमर्षयः ॥१३-३३-२२॥
yastu sarvam idaṃ hanyād brāhmaṇaṃ ca na tat samam। brahmavadhyā mahān doṣa iti āhuḥ paramarṣayaḥ ॥13-33-22॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; इदं (idaṃ) - this; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - would kill; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - a brāhmaṇa; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; तत् (tat) - that; समम् (samam) - equal; ब्रह्मवध्या (brahmavadhyā) - killing of a brāhmaṇa; महान् (mahān) - great; दोषः (doṣaḥ) - fault; इति (iti) - thus; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; परमर्षयः (paramarṣayaḥ) - supreme sages;]
(Who but all this would kill, a brāhmaṇa and, not that equal; killing of a brāhmaṇa great fault thus they say, supreme sages.)
But if someone were to kill all this world and a brāhmaṇa, that is not equal; the killing of a brāhmaṇa is considered a great fault, thus say the supreme sages. (13-33-22)
परिवादो द्विजातीनां न श्रोतव्यः कथञ्चन। आसीताधोमुखस्तूष्णीं समुत्थाय व्रजेत वा ॥१३-३३-२३॥
parivādo dvijātīnām na śrotavyaḥ kathañcana। āsīt adhomukhas tūṣṇīṃ samutthāya vrajet vā ॥13-33-23॥
[परिवादः (parivādaḥ) - slander; द्विजातीनाम् (dvijātīnām) - of the twice-born; न (na) - not; श्रोतव्यः (śrotavyaḥ) - to be heard; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; आसीत् (āsīt) - should sit; अधोमुखः (adhomukhaḥ) - with face down; तूष्णीम् (tūṣṇīm) - in silence; समुत्थाय (samutthāya) - having risen; व्रजेत् (vrajet) - should go; वा (vā) - or;]
(Slander of the twice-born not to be heard in any way. Should sit with face down in silence, having risen should go or.)
One should never listen to slander of the twice-born in any way; instead, one should either sit silently with face down or get up and leave. (13-33-23)
न स जातो जनिष्यो वा पृथिव्यामिह कश्चन। यो ब्राह्मणविरोधेन सुखं जीवितुमुत्सहेत् ॥१३-३३-२४॥
na sa jāto janiṣyo vā pṛthivyām iha kaścana। yo brāhmaṇavirodhena sukhaṃ jīvitum utsaheta ॥13-33-24॥
[न (na) - not; स (sa) - he; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; जनिष्यः (janiṣyaḥ) - will be born; वा (vā) - or; पृथिव्याम् (pṛthivyām) - on the earth; इह (iha) - here; कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone; यः (yaḥ) - who; ब्राह्मणविरोधेन (brāhmaṇavirodhena) - by opposition to a brāhmaṇa; सुखम् (sukham) - happily; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; उत्सहेत् (utsahet) - would be able;]
(Not he born, will be born or, on the earth here anyone; who by opposition to a brāhmaṇa happily to live would be able.)
There is no one born, nor will there ever be anyone born on this earth, who could live happily by opposing a brāhmaṇa. (13-33-24)
दुर्ग्रहो मुष्टिना वायुर्दुःस्पर्शः पाणिना शशी। दुर्धरा पृथिवी मूर्ध्ना दुर्जया ब्राह्मणा भुवि ॥१३-३३-२५॥
durgraho muṣṭinā vāyur duḥsparśaḥ pāṇinā śaśī। durdharā pṛthivī mūrdhnā durjayā brāhmaṇā bhuvi ॥13-33-25॥
[दुर्ग्रहः (durgrahaḥ) - difficult-to-be-grasped; मुष्टिना (muṣṭinā) - with the fist; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; दुःस्पर्शः (duḥsparśaḥ) - difficult-to-be-touched; पाणिना (pāṇinā) - with the hand; शशी (śaśī) - moon; दुर्धरा (durdharā) - difficult-to-be-borne; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; मूर्ध्ना (mūrdhnā) - on the head; दुर्जया (durjayā) - difficult-to-be-conquered; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the earth;]
(The wind is difficult to be grasped with the fist; the moon is difficult to be touched with the hand; the earth is difficult to be borne on the head; the brāhmaṇas are difficult to be conquered on the earth.)
The wind cannot be grasped with the fist; the moon cannot be touched with the hand; the earth cannot be borne on the head; brāhmaṇas cannot be conquered on the earth. (13-33-25)
