Library: The Pulomā episode concludes. The demon abducts Pulomā, Cyavana is born, the demon is destroyed by the infant's radiance, Bhṛgu returns, learns Agni revealed his wife, and curses Agni to become 'consumer of everything'.

Sūta said:
अग्नेरथ वचः श्रुत्वा तद्रक्षः प्रजहार ताम् । ब्रह्मन्वराहरूपेण मनोमारुतरंहसा ॥१-००६-१॥
agneratha vacaḥ śrutvā tadrakṣaḥ prajahāra tām । brahmanvarāharūpeṇa manomārutaraṃhasā ॥1-006-1॥
[अग्नेः (agneḥ) - of Agni; अथ (atha) - then; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तत् (tat) - that; रक्षः (rakṣaḥ) - demon; प्रजहार (prajahāra) - seized; ताम् (tām) - her; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; वराहरूपेण (varāharūpeṇa) - in the form of a boar; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; मारुत (māruta) - wind; रंहसा (raṃhasā) - swiftly;]
Having heard the words of Agni, then that demon seized her. O Brahman, in the form of a boar, swiftly with the speed of mind and wind.
ततः स गर्भो निवसन्कुक्षौ भृगुकुलोद्वह । रोषान्मातुश्च्युतः कुक्षेश्च्यवनस्तेन सोऽभवत् ॥१-००६-२॥
tataḥ sa garbho nivasan kukṣau bhṛgukulodvaha । roṣān mātuś cyutaḥ kukṣeś cyavanas tena so'bhavat ॥1-006-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; गर्भः (garbhaḥ) - embryo; निवसन् (nivasan) - residing; कुक्षौ (kukṣau) - in the womb; भृगुकुलोद्वह (bhṛgukulodvaha) - of the Bhrigu dynasty; रोषात् (roṣāt) - out of anger; मातुः (mātuḥ) - of the mother; च्युतः (cyutaḥ) - fallen; कुक्षेः (kukṣeḥ) - from the womb; च्यवनः (cyavanaḥ) - Cyavana; तेन (tena) - therefore; सः (saḥ) - he; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
Then, the embryo residing in the womb of the Bhrigu dynasty, out of anger of the mother, fell from the womb and therefore became Cyavana.
तं दृष्ट्वा मातुरुदराच्च्युतमादित्यवर्चसम् । तद्रक्षो भस्मसाद्भूतं पपात परिमुच्य ताम् ॥१-००६-३॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā māturudarāccyutamādityavarcasam । tadrakṣo bhasmasādbhūtaṃ papāta parimucya tām ॥1-006-3॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मातुः (mātuḥ) - of the mother; उदरात् (udarāt) - from the womb; च्युतम् (cyutam) - fallen; आदित्यवर्चसम् (ādityavarcasam) - radiant like the sun; तत् (tat) - that; रक्षः (rakṣaḥ) - demon; भस्मसात् (bhasmasāt) - to ashes; भूतम् (bhūtam) - became; पपात (papāta) - fell; परिमुच्य (parimucya) - releasing; ताम् (tām) - her;]
Seeing him, radiant like the sun, fallen from his mother's womb, that demon became ashes and fell, releasing her.
सा तमादाय सुश्रोणी ससार भृगुनन्दनम् । च्यवनं भार्गवं ब्रह्मन्पुलोमा दुःखमूर्च्छिता ॥१-००६-४॥
sā tam ādāya suśroṇī sasāra bhṛgunandanam । cyavanaṃ bhārgavaṃ brahmanpulomā duḥkhamūrcchitā ॥1-006-4॥
[सा (sā) - she; तम् (tam) - him; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; सुश्रोणी (suśroṇī) - the beautiful lady; ससार (sasāra) - went; भृगुनन्दनम् (bhṛgunandanam) - to the son of Bhṛgu; च्यवनम् (cyavanam) - Cyavana; भार्गवम् (bhārgavam) - descendant of Bhṛgu; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; पुलोमा (pulomā) - Pulomā; दुःखमूर्च्छिता (duḥkhamūrcchitā) - overcome with sorrow;]
She, the beautiful lady Pulomā, having taken him, went to Cyavana, the descendant of Bhṛgu, O Brahman, overcome with sorrow.
तां ददर्श स्वयं ब्रह्मा सर्वलोकपितामहः । रुदतीं बाष्पपूर्णाक्षीं भृगोर्भार्यामनिन्दिताम् ॥ सान्त्वयामास भगवान्वधूं ब्रह्मा पितामहः ॥१-००६-५॥
tāṃ dadarśa svayaṃ brahmā sarvalokapitāmahaḥ । rudatīṃ bāṣpapūrṇākṣīṃ bhṛgorbhāryāmaninditām ॥ sāntvayāmāsa bhagavānvadhūṃ brahmā pitāmahaḥ ॥1-006-5॥
[तां (tāṃ) - her; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; स्वयं (svayaṃ) - himself; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahma; सर्वलोकपितामहः (sarvalokapitāmahaḥ) - grandfather of all worlds; रुदतीं (rudatīṃ) - weeping; बाष्पपूर्णाक्षीं (bāṣpapūrṇākṣīṃ) - with tear-filled eyes; भृगोः (bhṛgoḥ) - of Bhrigu; भार्याम् (bhāryām) - wife; अनिन्दिताम् (aninditām) - blameless; सान्त्वयामास (sāntvayāmāsa) - consoled; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the divine; वधूं (vadhūṃ) - bride; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahma; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - grandfather;]
Brahma, the grandfather of all worlds, himself saw her, the blameless wife of Bhrigu, weeping with tear-filled eyes. The divine Brahma consoled the bride.
अश्रुबिन्दूद्भवा तस्याः प्रावर्तत महानदी । अनुवर्तती सृतिं तस्या भृगोः पत्न्या यशस्विनः ॥१-००६-६॥
aśrubindūdbhavā tasyāḥ prāvartata mahānadī । anuvartatī sṛtiṃ tasyā bhṛgoḥ patnyā yaśasvinaḥ ॥1-006-6॥
[अश्रुबिन्दूद्भवा (aśrubindūdbhavā) - born of tear-drops; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; प्रावर्तत (prāvartata) - began; महानदी (mahānadī) - great river; अनुवर्तती (anuvartatī) - following; सृतिं (sṛtiṃ) - path; तस्या (tasyā) - of her; भृगोः (bhṛgoḥ) - of Bhrigu; पत्न्या (patnyā) - by the wife; यशस्विनः (yaśasvinaḥ) - illustrious;]
A great river, born of her tear-drops, began following the path of the illustrious wife of Bhrigu.
तस्या मार्गं सृतवतीं दृष्ट्वा तु सरितं तदा । नाम तस्यास्तदा नद्याश्चक्रे लोकपितामहः ॥ वधूसरेति भगवांश्च्यवनस्याश्रमं प्रति ॥१-००६-७॥
tasyā mārgaṃ sṛtavatīṃ dṛṣṭvā tu saritaṃ tadā । nāma tasyāstadā nadyāścakre lokapitāmahaḥ ॥ vadhūsareti bhagavāṃścyavanasyaāśramaṃ prati ॥1-006-7॥
[तस्या (tasyā) - her; मार्गं (mārgaṃ) - path; सृतवतीं (sṛtavatīṃ) - having gone; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तु (tu) - but; सरितं (saritaṃ) - river; तदा (tadā) - then; नाम (nāma) - name; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; तदा (tadā) - then; नद्याः (nadyāḥ) - of the river; चक्रे (cakre) - made; लोकपितामहः (lokapitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire of the worlds; वधूसर (vadhūsara) - Vadhusara; इति (iti) - thus; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; च्यवनस्य (cyavanasya) - of Cyavana; आश्रमं (āśramaṃ) - hermitage; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
Having seen the path she took, he then named the river 'Vadhusara', the grandsire of the worlds did so, towards the hermitage of the venerable Cyavana.
स एवं च्यवनो जज्ञे भृगोः पुत्रः प्रतापवान् । तं ददर्श पिता तत्र च्यवनं तां च भामिनीम् ॥१-००६-८॥
sa evaṃ cyavano jajñe bhṛgoḥ putraḥ pratāpavān । taṃ dadarśa pitā tatra cyavanaṃ tāṃ ca bhāminīm ॥1-006-8॥

Thus, Cyavana, the mighty son of Bhrigu, was born. There, the father saw Cyavana and the lady.
स पुलोमां ततो भार्यां पप्रच्छ कुपितो भृगुः । केनासि रक्षसे तस्मै कथितेह जिहीर्षवे ॥ न हि त्वां वेद तद्रक्षो मद्भार्यां चारुहासिनीम् ॥१-००६-९॥
sa pulomāṃ tato bhāryāṃ papraccha kupito bhṛguḥ । kenāsi rakṣase tasmai kathiteha jihīrṣave ॥ na hi tvāṃ veda tadrakṣo madbhāryāṃ cāruhāsinīm ॥1-006-9॥
[स (sa) - he; पुलोमां (pulomāṃ) - Pulomā; ततः (tataḥ) - then; भार्यां (bhāryāṃ) - wife; पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; कुपितः (kupitaḥ) - angry; भृगुः (bhṛguḥ) - Bhrigu; केन (kena) - by whom; असि (asi) - are; रक्षसे (rakṣase) - protected; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; कथिते (kathite) - having been told; इह (iha) - here; जिहीर्षवे (jihīrṣave) - desiring to take away; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; वेद (veda) - know; तत् (tat) - that; रक्षः (rakṣaḥ) - demon; मद्भार्यां (madbhāryāṃ) - my wife; चारुहासिनीम् (cāruhāsinīm) - with a charming smile;]
Then, the angry Bhrigu asked Pulomā, "By whom are you protected here, desiring to take away? Indeed, that demon does not know you, my wife with a charming smile."
तत्त्वमाख्याहि तं ह्यद्य शप्तुमिच्छाम्यहं रुषा । बिभेति को न शापान्मे कस्य चायं व्यतिक्रमः ॥१-००६-१०॥
tattvam ākhyāhi taṃ hy adya śaptum icchāmy ahaṃ ruṣā । bibheti ko na śāpān me kasya cāyaṃ vyatikramaḥ ॥1-006-10॥
[तत्त्वम् (tattvam) - truth; आख्याहि (ākhyāhi) - tell; तम् (tam) - him; हि (hi) - indeed; अद्य (adya) - today; शप्तुम् (śaptum) - to curse; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; अहम् (aham) - I; रुषा (ruṣā) - with anger; बिभेति (bibheti) - fears; कः (kaḥ) - who; न (na) - not; शापात् (śāpāt) - from curse; मे (me) - my; कस्य (kasya) - whose; च (ca) - and; अयम् (ayam) - this; व्यतिक्रमः (vyatikramaḥ) - transgression;]
Tell the truth, for today I wish to curse him with anger. Who does not fear my curse? And whose transgression is this?
पुलोमोवाच॥
pulomovāca॥
[पुलोमः (pulomaḥ) - Puloma; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Puloma said:
अग्निना भगवंस्तस्मै रक्षसेऽहं निवेदिता । ततो मामनयद्रक्षः क्रोशन्तीं कुररीमिव ॥१-००६-११॥
agninā bhagavaṃstasmai rakṣase'haṃ niveditā । tato māmanayadrakṣaḥ krośantīṃ kurarīmiva ॥1-006-11॥
[अग्निना (agninā) - by Agni; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; रक्षसे (rakṣase) - to the demon; अहम् (aham) - I; निवेदिता (niveditā) - offered; ततः (tataḥ) - then; माम् (mām) - me; अनयत् (anayat) - led away; रक्षः (rakṣaḥ) - the demon; क्रोशन्तीम् (krośantīm) - crying; कुररीम् (kurarīm) - like a curlew; इव (iva) - like;]
By Agni, O Lord, I was offered to the demon. Then the demon led me away, crying like a curlew.
साहं तव सुतस्यास्य तेजसा परिमोक्षिता । भस्मीभूतं च तद्रक्षो मामुत्सृज्य पपात वै ॥१-००६-१२॥
sāhaṃ tava sutasya asya tejasā parimokṣitā । bhasmībhūtaṃ ca tadrakṣo mām utsṛjya papāta vai ॥1-006-12॥
[साहं (sāhaṃ) - I; तव (tava) - your; सुतस्य (sutasya) - son's; अस्य (asya) - this; तेजसा (tejasā) - by the power; परिमोक्षिता (parimokṣitā) - liberated; भस्मीभूतं (bhasmībhūtaṃ) - reduced to ashes; च (ca) - and; तद्रक्षः (tadrakṣaḥ) - that demon; माम् (mām) - me; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - leaving; पपात (papāta) - fell; वै (vai) - indeed;]
I, liberated by the power of your son, and that demon reduced to ashes, leaving me, indeed fell.

Sūta said:
इति श्रुत्वा पुलोमाया भृगुः परममन्युमान् । शशापाग्निमभिक्रुद्धः सर्वभक्षो भविष्यसि ॥१-००६-१३॥
iti śrutvā pulomāyā bhṛguḥ paramamanyumān । śaśāpāgnimabhikruddhaḥ sarvabhakṣo bhaviṣyasi ॥1-006-13॥
[इति (iti) - thus; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; पुलोमाया (pulomāyā) - of Pulomā; भृगुः (bhṛguḥ) - Bhrigu; परममन्युमान् (paramamanyumān) - greatly enraged; शशाप (śaśāpa) - cursed; अग्निम् (agnim) - Agni; अभिक्रुद्धः (abhikruddhaḥ) - furiously; सर्वभक्षः (sarvabhakṣaḥ) - all-consuming; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you shall become;]
Thus, having heard of Pulomā, Bhrigu, greatly enraged, cursed Agni furiously, 'You shall become all-consuming.'
