त्वत्तः श्रुतमिदं ब्रह्मन्देवदानवरक्षसाम्। अंशावतरणं सम्यग्गन्धर्वाप्सरसां तथा ॥१-६२-१॥
tvattaḥ śrutam idaṃ brahman devadānavarakṣasām। aṃśāvataraṇaṃ samyag gandharvāpsarasāṃ tathā ॥1-62-1॥
[त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; इदम् (idam) - this; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; देवदानवरक्षसाम् (devadānavarakṣasām) - of gods, demons, and rakshasas; अंशावतरणम् (aṃśāvataraṇam) - partial incarnation; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; गन्धर्वाप्सरसाम् (gandharvāpsarasām) - of gandharvas and apsaras; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(From you, O Brahman, this has been heard: the partial incarnation of gods, demons, and rakshasas, as well as of gandharvas and apsaras, properly.)
O Brahman, it has been heard from you about the proper partial incarnation of gods, demons, rakshasas, gandharvas, and apsaras.
इमं तु भूय इच्छामि कुरूणां वंशमादितः। कथ्यमानं त्वया विप्र विप्रर्षिगणसंनिधौ ॥१-६२-२॥
imaṁ tu bhūya icchāmi kurūṇāṁ vaṁśamāditaḥ| kathyamānaṁ tvayā vipra viprarṣigaṇasaṁnidhau ॥1-62-2॥

(But I wish again for the lineage of the Kurus to be narrated by you from the beginning, O sage, in the presence of the assembly of sages.)

पौरवाणां वंशकरो दुःषन्तो नाम वीर्यवान्। पृथिव्याश्चतुरन्ताया गोप्ता भरतसत्तम ॥१-६२-३॥
pauravāṇāṃ vaṃśakaro duḥṣanto nāma vīryavān। pṛthivyāścaturantāyā goptā bharatasattama ॥1-62-3॥
[पौरवाणां (pauravāṇāṃ) - of the Pauravas; वंशकरः (vaṃśakaraḥ) - dynasty maker; दुःषन्तः (duḥṣantaḥ) - Duḥṣanta; नाम (nāma) - named; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - valiant; पृथिव्याः (pṛthivyāḥ) - of the earth; चतुरन्तायाः (caturantāyāḥ) - of the four ends; गोप्ता (goptā) - protector; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Duḥṣanta, named as the valiant dynasty maker of the Pauravas, protector of the earth with its four ends, O best of the Bharatas.)
Duḥṣanta, the valiant progenitor of the Paurava dynasty, was known as the protector of the entire earth, O esteemed Bharata.
चतुर्भागं भुवः कृत्स्नं स भुङ्क्ते मनुजेश्वरः। समुद्रावरणांश्चापि देशान्स समितिञ्जयः ॥१-६२-४॥
caturbhāgaṃ bhuvaḥ kṛtsnaṃ sa bhuṅkte manujeśvaraḥ। samudrāvaraṇāṃścāpi deśānsa samitiñjayaḥ ॥1-62-4॥
[चतुर्भागं (caturbhāgam) - one-fourth part; भुवः (bhuvaḥ) - of the earth; कृत्स्नं (kṛtsnam) - entire; स (sa) - he; भुङ्क्ते (bhuṅkte) - enjoys; मनुजेश्वरः (manujeśvaraḥ) - lord of men; समुद्रावरणान् (samudrāvaraṇān) - surrounded by oceans; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; देशान् (deśān) - lands; स (sa) - he; समितिञ्जयः (samitiñjayaḥ) - victorious in assemblies;]
(The lord of men enjoys one-fourth part of the entire earth, and also the lands surrounded by oceans, he who is victorious in assemblies.)
The king enjoys a quarter of the whole earth and the lands surrounded by oceans, being victorious in assemblies.
आम्लेच्छाटविकान्सर्वान्स भुङ्क्ते रिपुमर्दनः। रत्नाकरसमुद्रान्तांश्चातुर्वर्ण्यजनावृतान् ॥१-६२-५॥
āmlecchāṭavikānsarvāns sa bhuṅkte ripumardanaḥ। ratnākara samudrāntāṃścāturvarṇyajanāvṛtān ॥1-62-5॥
[आम्लेच्छाटविकान् (āmlecchāṭavikān) - foreign tribes; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; स (sa) - he; भुङ्क्ते (bhuṅkte) - enjoys; रिपुमर्दनः (ripumardanaḥ) - enemy crusher; रत्नाकर (ratnākara) - ocean; समुद्रान्तान् (samudrāntān) - bounded by seas; चातुर्वर्ण्य (cāturvarṇya) - four castes; जनावृतान् (janāvṛtān) - inhabited by people;]
(The enemy crusher enjoys all foreign tribes, bounded by seas and inhabited by people of four castes.)
The conqueror of enemies enjoys dominion over all foreign tribes, lands bounded by oceans, and regions inhabited by people of the four castes.
न वर्णसङ्करकरो नाकृष्यकरकृज्जनः। न पापकृत्कश्चिदासीत्तस्मिन्राजनि शासति ॥१-६२-६॥
na varṇasaṅkarakaro nākṛṣyakārakṛjjanaḥ। na pāpakṛtkaścidāsīttasminrājani śāsati ॥1-62-6॥
[न (na) - not; वर्णसङ्करकरः (varṇasaṅkarakaraḥ) - causer of confusion of castes; न (na) - not; आकृष्यकरकृत् (ākṛṣyakārakṛt) - causer of oppression; जनः (janaḥ) - people; न (na) - not; पापकृत् (pāpakṛt) - doer of evil; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; राजनि (rājani) - king; शासति (śāsati) - reigning;]
(There was no causer of confusion of castes, no causer of oppression, no doer of evil among the people when that king was reigning.)
During the reign of that king, there was no one who caused confusion among the castes, no one who oppressed others, and no one who committed evil.
धर्म्यां रतिं सेवमाना धर्मार्थावभिपेदिरे। तदा नरा नरव्याघ्र तस्मिञ्जनपदेश्वरे ॥१-६२-७॥
dharmyāṃ ratiṃ sevamānā dharmārthāvabhipedire। tadā narā naravyāghra tasmiñjanapadeśvare ॥1-62-7॥
[धर्म्यां (dharmyām) - righteous; रतिं (ratim) - pleasure; सेवमाना (sevamānā) - engaging; धर्मार्थौ (dharmārthau) - righteous goals; अभिपेदिरे (abhipedire) - attained; तदा (tadā) - then; नराः (narāḥ) - men; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; जनपदेश्वरे (janapadeśvare) - lord of the land;]
(Engaging in righteous pleasure, they attained righteous goals. Then, O tiger among men, those men in that lord of the land.)
Engaging in righteous pleasures, they achieved their righteous goals. At that time, O tiger among men, those people were in the domain of the lord of the land.
नासीच्चोरभयं तात न क्षुधाभयमण्वपि। नासीद्व्याधिभयं चापि तस्मिञ्जनपदेश्वरे ॥१-६२-८॥
nāsīc corabhayaṃ tāta na kṣudhābhayam aṇv api। nāsīd vyādhibhayaṃ cāpi tasmiñ janapadeśvare ॥1-62-8॥
[न (na) - not; असीत् (āsīt) - there was; चोर (cora) - thief; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; तात (tāta) - father; न (na) - not; क्षुधा (kṣudhā) - hunger; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; अणु (aṇu) - even a little; अपि (api) - also; न (na) - not; असीत् (āsīt) - there was; व्याधि (vyādhi) - disease; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; जनपद (janapada) - country; ईश्वरे (īśvare) - lord;]

स्वैर्धर्मै रेमिरे वर्णा दैवे कर्मणि निःस्पृहाः। तमाश्रित्य महीपालमासंश्चैवाकुतोभयाः ॥१-६२-९॥
svairdharmai remire varṇā daive karmaṇi niḥspṛhāḥ। tamāśritya mahīpālamāsaṃścaivākutobhayāḥ ॥1-62-9॥
[स्वैः (svaiḥ) - by own; धर्मैः (dharmaiḥ) - duties; रेमिरे (remire) - engaged; वर्णाः (varṇāḥ) - classes; दैवे (daive) - divine; कर्मणि (karmaṇi) - in duties; निःस्पृहाः (niḥspṛhāḥ) - desireless; तम् (tam) - him; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - having resorted to; महीपालम् (mahīpālam) - king; आसन् (āsan) - were; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अकुतोभयाः (akutobhayāḥ) - fearless;]

स चाद्भुतमहावीर्यो वज्रसंहननो युवा। उद्यम्य मन्दरं दोर्भ्यां हरेत्सवनकाननम् ॥१-६२-११॥
sa cādbhutamahāvīryo vajrasaṃhanano yuvā। udyamya mandaraṃ dorbhyāṃ haret savanakānanam ॥1-62-11॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; अद्भुत (adbhuta) - wonderful; महावीर्यः (mahāvīryaḥ) - great hero; वज्रसंहननः (vajrasaṃhananaḥ) - with a body hard as a diamond; युवा (yuvā) - young; उद्यम्य (udyamya) - having lifted; मन्दरम् (mandaram) - Mandara mountain; दोर् (dor) - with arms; भ्याम् (bhyām) - two; हरेत् (haret) - would carry; सवन (savana) - with forests; काननम् (kānanam) - and groves;]
(He, the wonderful great hero, young and with a body hard as a diamond, having lifted the Mandara mountain with his two arms, would carry it with its forests and groves.)

धनुष्यथ गदायुद्धे त्सरुप्रहरणेषु च। नागपृष्ठेऽश्वपृष्ठे च बभूव परिनिष्ठितः ॥१-६२-१२॥
dhanuṣyatha gadāyuddhe tsaru-prahareṣu ca। nāgapṛṣṭhe'śvapṛṣṭhe ca babhūva pariniṣṭhitaḥ ॥1-62-12॥
[धनुष्यथ (dhanuṣyatha) - in archery; गदायुद्धे (gadāyuddhe) - in mace fighting; त्सरुप्रहरणेषु (tsaru-prahareṣu) - in all kinds of weapons; च (ca) - and; नागपृष्ठे (nāgapṛṣṭhe) - on the back of elephants; अश्वपृष्ठे (aśvapṛṣṭhe) - on the back of horses; च (ca) - and; बभूव (babhūva) - became; परिनिष्ठितः (pariniṣṭhitaḥ) - proficient;]
(In archery, in mace fighting, in all kinds of weapons, and on the back of elephants and horses, he became proficient.)

बले विष्णुसमश्चासीत्तेजसा भास्करोपमः। अक्षुब्धत्वेऽर्णवसमः सहिष्णुत्वे धरासमः ॥१-६२-१३॥
bale viṣṇusamaścāsīttejasā bhāskaropamaḥ| akṣubdhatve'rṇavasamaḥ sahiṣṇutve dharāsamaḥ ॥1-62-13॥
[बले (bale) - in strength; विष्णुसमः (viṣṇusamaḥ) - equal to Viṣṇu; च (ca) - and; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; तेजसा (tejasā) - in brilliance; भास्कर-उपमः (bhāskara-upamaḥ) - like the sun; अक्षुब्धत्वे (akṣubdhatve) - in calmness; अर्णवसमः (arṇavasamaḥ) - like the ocean; सहिष्णुत्वे (sahiṣṇutve) - in patience; धरासमः (dharāsamaḥ) - like the earth;]
(In strength, he was equal to Viṣṇu; in brilliance, like the sun; in calmness, like the ocean; in patience, like the earth.)

संमतः स महीपालः प्रसन्नपुरराष्ट्रवान्। भूयो धर्मपरैर्भावैर्विदितं जनमावसत् ॥१-६२-१४॥
saṁmataḥ sa mahīpālaḥ prasannapura rāṣṭravān। bhūyo dharmaparair bhāvair viditaṁ janam āvasat ॥1-62-14॥
[संमतः (saṁmataḥ) - respected; स (sa) - he; महीपालः (mahīpālaḥ) - king; प्रसन्नपुर (prasannapura) - prosperous city; राष्ट्रवान् (rāṣṭravān) - having a kingdom; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; धर्मपरैः (dharmaparaiḥ) - by the virtuous; भावैः (bhāvaiḥ) - with qualities; विदितं (viditaṁ) - known; जनम् (janam) - people; आवसत् (āvasat) - dwelt;]
(Respected, he, the king, having a prosperous city and kingdom, again dwelt among the people known for their virtuous qualities.)
