Pancharatra:Last rites of King Pandu.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca॥
[धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Dhṛtarāṣṭra said.
पाण्डोर्विदुर सर्वाणि प्रेतकार्याणि कारय । राजवद्राजसिंहस्य माद्र्याश्चैव विशेषतः ॥१-११८-१॥
pāṇḍor vidura sarvāṇi pretakāryāṇi kāraya। rājavad rājasiṁhasya mādryāś caiva viśeṣataḥ॥1॥
[पाण्डोः (pāṇḍoḥ) - of Pāṇḍu; विदुर (vidura) - O Vidura; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; प्रेतकार्याणि (pretakāryāṇi) - funeral rites; कारय (kāraya) - have performed; राजवत् (rājavat) - like a king; राजसिंहस्य (rājasiṁhasya) - of the lion among kings; माद्र्याः (mādryāḥ) - of Mādrī; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially;]
O Vidura, have all the funeral rites of Pāṇḍu performed like those of a royal lion, and especially of Mādrī.
पशून्वासांसि रत्नानि धनानि विविधानि च । पाण्डोः प्रयच्छ माद्र्याश्च येभ्यो यावच्च वाञ्छितम् ॥१-११८-२॥
paśūn vāsāṁsi ratnāni dhanāni vividhāni ca। pāṇḍoḥ prayaccha mādryāś ca yebhyo yāvac ca vāñchitam॥2॥
[पशून् (paśūn) - animals; वासांसि (vāsāṁsi) - garments; रत्नानि (ratnāni) - jewels; धनानि (dhanāni) - wealth; विविधानि (vividhāni) - of various kinds; च (ca) - and; पाण्डोः (pāṇḍoḥ) - of Pāṇḍu; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - give; माद्र्याः (mādryāḥ) - of Mādrī; च (ca) - and; येभ्यः (yebhyaḥ) - to whom; यावत् (yāvat) - as much as; च (ca) - and; वाञ्छितम् (vāñchitam) - is desired;]
Give animals, garments, jewels, and various kinds of wealth of Pāṇḍu and Mādrī to whomsoever as much as is desired.
यथा च कुन्ती सत्कारं कुर्यान्माद्र्यास्तथा कुरु । यथा न वायुर्नादित्यः पश्येतां तां सुसंवृताम् ॥१-११८-३॥
yathā ca kuntī satkāraṁ kuryān mādryās tathā kuru। yathā na vāyur nādityaḥ paśyetāṁ tāṁ susaṁvṛtām॥3॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; च (ca) - and; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; सत्कारम् (satkāram) - respect; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - would do; माद्र्याः (mādryāḥ) - of Mādrī; तथा (tathā) - likewise; कुरु (kuru) - do; यथा (yathā) - such that; न (na) - neither; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; न (na) - nor; आदित्यः (ādityaḥ) - sun; पश्येताम् (paśyetām) - may see; ताम् (tām) - her; सुसंवृताम् (susaṁvṛtām) - well-covered;]
Give Mādrī the same honor as Kuntī, in such a way that neither wind nor sun may see her well-covered form.
न शोच्यः पाण्डुरनघः प्रशस्यः स नराधिपः । यस्य पञ्च सुता वीरा जाताः सुरसुतोपमाः ॥१-११८-४॥
na śocyaḥ pāṇḍur anaghaḥ praśasyaḥ sa narādhipaḥ। yasya pañca sutā vīrā jātāḥ surasutopamāḥ॥4॥
[न (na) - not; शोच्यः (śocyaḥ) - to be mourned; पाण्डुः (pāṇḍuḥ) - Pāṇḍu; अनघः (anaghaḥ) - sinless; प्रशस्यः (praśasyaḥ) - praiseworthy; सः (saḥ) - that; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - lord of men; यस्य (yasya) - whose; पञ्च (pañca) - five; सुताः (sutāḥ) - sons; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; जाताः (jātāḥ) - born; सुरसुत-उपमाः (surasuta-upamāḥ) - equal to sons of gods;]
Pāṇḍu, the sinless and praiseworthy lord of men, is not to be mourned, for five heroic sons were born to him, equal to the sons of gods.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायनः (vaiśaṁpāyanaḥ) - Vaiśaṁpāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśaṁpāyana said.
विदुरस्तं तथेत्युक्त्वा भीष्मेण सह भारत । पाण्डुं संस्कारयामास देशे परमसंवृते ॥१-११८-५॥
viduras taṁ tathety uktvā bhīṣmeṇa saha bhārata। pāṇḍuṁ saṁskārayām āsa deśe paramasaṁvṛte॥5॥
[विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; तम् (tam) - him; तथा इति (tathā iti) - thus, saying; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - with Bhīṣma; सह (saha) - along with; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; पाण्डुम् (pāṇḍum) - Pāṇḍu; संस्कारयामास (saṁskārayām āsa) - had consecrated; देशे (deśe) - in a place; परम-संवृते (parama-saṁvṛte) - most secluded;]
Vidura, saying "so be it" and with Bhīṣma, had Pāṇḍu consecrated in a most secluded place, O Bhārata.
ततस्तु नगरात्तूर्णमाज्यहोमपुरस्कृताः । निर्हृताः पावका दीप्ताः पाण्डो राजपुरोहितैः ॥१-११८-६॥
tatastu nagarāt tūrṇam ājyahomapuras kṛtāḥ। nirhṛtāḥ pāvakā dīptāḥ pāṇḍo rājakapurohitaiḥ॥6॥
[ततः तु (tataḥ tu) - then indeed; नगरात् (nagarāt) - from the city; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - swiftly; आज्य-होम-पुरस्कृताः (ājya-homa-puraskṛtāḥ) - preceded by ghee-offering rituals; निर्हृताः (nirhṛtāḥ) - were brought out; पावकाः (pāvakāḥ) - blazing fires; दीप्ताः (dīptāḥ) - bright; पाण्डोः (pāṇḍoḥ) - of Pāṇḍu; राजपुरोहितैः (rājapurohitaiḥ) - by the royal priests;]
Then from the city, blazing fires were swiftly brought forth, preceded by ghee-offering rites, by the royal priests for Pāṇḍu.
अथैनमार्तवैर्गन्धैर्माल्यैश्च विविधैर्वरैः । शिबिकां समलञ्चक्रुर्वाससाच्छाद्य सर्वशः ॥१-११८-७॥
athainam ārtavair gandhair mālyaiś ca vividhair varaiḥ। śibikāṁ samalañcakruḥ vāsasācchādya sarvaśaḥ॥7॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एनम् (enam) - him; आर्तवैः (ārtavaiḥ) - seasonal; गन्धैः (gandhaiḥ) - with scents; माल्यैः (mālyaiḥ) - with garlands; च (ca) - and; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - various; वरैः (varaiḥ) - excellent; शिबिकाम् (śibikām) - palanquin; समलञ्चक्रुः (samalañcakruḥ) - adorned; वाससा (vāsasā) - with cloth; आच्छाद्य (ācchādya) - covering; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - completely;]
Then they adorned his palanquin completely with seasonal scents, various excellent garlands, and cloth coverings.
तां तथा शोभितां माल्यैर्वासोभिश्च महाधनैः । अमात्या ज्ञातयश्चैव सुहृदश्चोपतस्थिरे ॥१-११८-८॥
tāṁ tathā śobhitāṁ mālyair vāsobhiś ca mahādhanair। amātyā jñātayaś caiva suhṛdaś copatasthire॥8॥
[ताम् (tām) - that; तथा (tathā) - thus; शोभिताम् (śobhitām) - adorned; माल्यैः (mālyaiḥ) - with garlands; वासोभिः (vāsobhiḥ) - with garments; च (ca) - and; महाधनैः (mahādhanair) - with great wealth; अमात्याः (amātyāḥ) - ministers; ज्ञातयः (jñātayaḥ) - kinsmen; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; च (ca) - and; उपतस्थिरे (upatasthire) - approached;]
The ministers, kinsmen, and friends approached the palanquin, adorned with garlands, garments, and great riches.
नृसिंहं नरयुक्तेन परमालङ्कृतेन तम् । अवहन्यानमुख्येन सह माद्र्या सुसंवृतम् ॥१-११८-९॥
nṛsiṁhaṁ narayuktena paramālaṅkṛtena tam। avahan yānamukhyena saha mādryā susaṁvṛtam॥9॥
[नृसिंहम् (nṛsiṁham) - lion among men; नरयुक्तेन (narayuktena) - drawn by men; परम-आलङ्कृतेन (paramālaṅkṛtena) - most richly adorned; तम् (tam) - him; अवहन् (avahan) - was carried; यानमुख्येन (yānamukhyena) - in the chief vehicle; सह (saha) - with; माद्र्या (mādryā) - Mādrī; सुसंवृतम् (susaṁvṛtam) - well-covered;]
That lion among men was carried in the chief vehicle, drawn by men and most richly adorned, along with the well-covered Mādrī.
पाण्डुरेणातपत्रेण चामरव्यजनेन च । सर्ववादित्रनादैश्च समलञ्चक्रिरे ततः ॥१-११८-१०॥
pāṇḍureṇātapatreṇa cāmaravyajanena ca। sarvavāditranādaiś ca samalañcakrire tataḥ॥10॥
[पाण्डुरेण (pāṇḍureṇa) - white; आतपत्रेण (ātapatreṇa) - with umbrella; च (ca) - and; चामर-व्यजनेन (cāmara-vyajanena) - with yak-tail fan; च (ca) - and; सर्व-वादित्र-नादैः (sarva-vāditra-nādaiḥ) - with all musical instrument sounds; च (ca) - and; समलञ्चक्रिरे (samalañcakrire) - they decorated; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
Then they decorated him with a white umbrella, a yak-tail fan, and the sounds of all musical instruments.
रत्नानि चाप्युपादाय बहूनि शतशो नराः । प्रददुः काङ्क्षमाणेभ्यः पाण्डोस्तत्रौर्ध्वदेहिकम् ॥१-११८-११॥
ratnāni cāpy upādāya bahūni śataśo narāḥ। pradaduḥ kāṅkṣamāṇebhyaḥ pāṇḍos tatrāurdhvadehikam॥11॥
[रत्नानि (ratnāni) - jewels; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; उपादाय (upādāya) - having taken; बहूनि (bahūni) - many; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; नराः (narāḥ) - men; प्रददुः (pradaduḥ) - gave; काङ्क्षमाणेभ्यः (kāṅkṣamāṇebhyaḥ) - to the desiring ones; पाण्डोः (pāṇḍoḥ) - of Pāṇḍu; तत्र (tatra) - there; और्ध्वदेहिकम् (aurdhvadehikam) - funeral offering;]
The men, having taken many jewels by hundreds, gave them as funeral offerings of Pāṇḍu to those who desired.
अथ छत्राणि शुभ्राणि पाण्डुराणि बृहन्ति च । आजह्रुः कौरवस्यार्थे वासांसि रुचिराणि च ॥१-११८-१२॥
atha chatrāṇi śubhrāṇi pāṇḍurāṇi bṛhanti ca। ājahruḥ kauravasyārthe vāsāṁsi rucirāṇi ca॥12॥
[अथ (atha) - then; छत्राणि (chatrāṇi) - umbrellas; शुभ्राणि (śubhrāṇi) - white; पाण्डुराणि (pāṇḍurāṇi) - pale; बृहन्ति (bṛhanti) - large; च (ca) - and; आजह्रुः (ājahruḥ) - brought; कौरवस्य (kauravasya) - for the Kaurava; अर्थे (arthe) - for the sake; वासांसि (vāsāṁsi) - garments; रुचिराणि (rucirāṇi) - bright; च (ca) - and;]
Then they brought white, pale, and large umbrellas, and also bright garments, for the sake of the Kaurava.
याजकैः शुक्लवासोभिर्हूयमाना हुताशनाः । अगच्छन्नग्रतस्तस्य दीप्यमानाः स्वलङ्कृताः ॥१-११८-१३॥
yājakaiḥ śuklavāsobhir hūyamānā hutāśanāḥ। agacchan agratas tasya dīpyamānāḥ sv-alaṅkṛtāḥ॥13॥
[याजकैः (yājakaiḥ) - by priests; शुक्लवासोभिः (śuklavāsobhiḥ) - wearing white garments; हूयमाना (hūyamānāḥ) - being offered into; हुताशनाः (hutāśanāḥ) - fires; अगच्छन् (agacchan) - went; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - in front; तस्य (tasya) - of him; दीप्यमानाः (dīpyamānāḥ) - blazing; स्वलङ्कृताः (sv-alaṅkṛtāḥ) - well-adorned;]
The sacrificial fires, being offered into by priests in white garments, went blazing and well-adorned before him.
ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्राश्चैव सहस्रशः । रुदन्तः शोकसन्तप्ता अनुजग्मुर्नराधिपम् ॥१-११८-१४॥
brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyā vaiśyāḥ śūdrāś caiva sahasraśaḥ। rudantaḥ śokasantaptā anujagmur narādhipam॥14॥
[ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - Kṣatriyas; वैश्याः (vaiśyāḥ) - Vaiśyas; शूद्राः (śūdrāḥ) - Śūdras; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; रुदन्तः (rudantaḥ) - weeping; शोकसन्तप्ताः (śokasantaptāḥ) - tormented by grief; अनुजग्मुः (anujagmuḥ) - followed; नराधिपम् (narādhipam) - the lord of men;]
Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras by the thousands, weeping and tormented by grief, followed the lord of men.
अयमस्मानपाहाय दुःखे चाधाय शाश्वते । कृत्वानाथान्परो नाथः क्व यास्यति नराधिपः ॥१-११८-१५॥
ayamasmān apāhāya duḥkhe cādhāya śāśvate। kṛtvānāthān paro nāthaḥ kva yāsyati narādhipaḥ॥15॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; अपाहाय (apāhāya) - abandoning; दुःखे (duḥkhe) - in sorrow; च (ca) - and; आधाय (ādhāya) - having placed; शाश्वते (śāśvate) - in the eternal; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; अनाथान् (anāthān) - orphaned; परः (paraḥ) - protector; नाथः (nāthaḥ) - lord; क्व (kva) - where; यास्यति (yāsyati) - will go; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - the lord of men;]
Where will this lord of men go, who has abandoned us in sorrow, placed us in the eternal pain, having made us orphans though he was our protector?
क्रोशन्तः पाण्डवाः सर्वे भीष्मो विदुर एव च । रमणीये वनोद्देशे गङ्गातीरे समे शुभे ॥१-११८-१६॥
krośantaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sarve bhīṣmo vidura eva ca। ramaṇīye vanoddeśe gaṅgātīre same śubhe॥16॥
[क्रोशन्तः (krośantaḥ) - crying aloud; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; सर्वे (sarve) - all; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; रमणीये (ramaṇīye) - delightful; वन-उद्देशे (vana-uddeśe) - forest spot; गङ्गा-तीरे (gaṅgā-tīre) - on the bank of Ganga; समे (same) - level; शुभे (śubhe) - auspicious;]
Crying aloud, all the Pāṇḍavas, Bhīṣma, and Vidura reached a delightful, level, and auspicious forest spot on the bank of the Ganga.
न्यासयामासुरथ तां शिबिकां सत्यवादिनः । सभार्यस्य नृसिंहस्य पाण्डोरक्लिष्टकर्मणः ॥१-११८-१७॥
nyāsayāmāsur atha tāṁ śibikāṁ satyavādinaḥ। sabhāryasya nṛsiṁhasya pāṇḍor akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ॥17॥
[न्यासयामासुः (nyāsayāmāsuḥ) - they placed down; अथ (atha) - then; ताम् (tām) - that; शिबिकाम् (śibikām) - palanquin; सत्यवादिनः (satyavādinaḥ) - the truthful ones; सभार्यस्य (sabhāryasya) - with wife; नृसिंहस्य (nṛsiṁhasya) - lion among men; पाण्डोः (pāṇḍoḥ) - of Pāṇḍu; अklिष्टकर्मणः (akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ) - of unblemished deeds;]
Then the truthful ones placed down the palanquin of the lion among men Pāṇḍu, with his wife, who had unblemished deeds.
ततस्तस्य शरीरं तत्सर्वगन्धनिषेवितम् । शुचिकालीयकादिग्धं मुख्यस्नानाधिवासितम् । पर्यषिञ्चज्जलेनाशु शातकुम्भमयैर्घटैः ॥१-११८-१८॥
tatas tasya śarīraṁ tat sarvagandhaniṣevitam। śucikālīyakādigdhaṁ mukhyasnānādhivāsitam। paryaṣiñcaj jalenāśu śātakumbhamayair ghaṭaiḥ॥18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्य (tasya) - his; शरीरम् (śarīram) - body; तत् (tat) - that; सर्व-गन्ध-निषेवितम् (sarva-gandha-niṣevitam) - smeared with all perfumes; शुचि-कालीयक-आदिग्धम् (śuci-kālīyaka-ādigdham) - anointed with pure kālīyaka; मुख्य-स्नान-अधिवासितम् (mukhya-snānādhivāsitam) - prepared for main bath; पर्यषिञ्चत् (paryaṣiñcat) - sprinkled; जलेन (jalena) - with water; आशु (āśu) - quickly; शातकुम्भमयैः (śātakumbhamayaiḥ) - made of gold; घटैः (ghaṭaiḥ) - by pots;]
Then his body, smeared with all perfumes, anointed with pure kālīyaka, and prepared for the main bath, was quickly sprinkled with water from golden pots.
चन्दनेन च मुख्येन शुक्लेन समलेपयन् । कालागुरुविमिश्रेण तथा तुङ्गरसेन च ॥१-११८-१९॥
candaneṇa ca mukhyena śuklena samalepayan। kālāguruvimiśreṇa tathā tuṅgarasena ca॥19॥
[चन्दनेन (candaneṇa) - with sandalwood; च (ca) - and; मुख्येन (mukhyena) - excellent; शुक्लेन (śuklena) - white; समलेपयन् (samalepayan) - they smeared; कालागुरु-विमिश्रेण (kālāguru-vimiśreṇa) - mixed with black aloe; तथा (tathā) - also; तुङ्गरसेन (tuṅgarasena) - with strong essence; च (ca) - and;]
They smeared him with excellent white sandalwood mixed with black aloe and also with strong essence.
अथैनं देशजैः शुक्लैर्वासोभिः समयोजयन् । आच्छन्नः स तु वासोभिर्जीवन्निव नरर्षभः । शुशुभे पुरुषव्याघ्रो महार्हशयनोचितः ॥१-११८-२०॥
athainaṁ deśajaiḥ śuklair vāsobhiḥ samayojayan। ācchannaḥ sa tu vāsobhir jīvann iva nararṣabhaḥ। śuśubhe puruṣavyāghro mahārhaśayanocitaḥ॥20॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एनम् (enam) - him; देशजैः (deśajaiḥ) - local; शुक्लैः (śuklaiḥ) - white; वासोभिः (vāsobhiḥ) - garments; समयोजयन् (samayojayan) - they clothed; आच्छन्नः (ācchannaḥ) - covered; सः (saḥ) - he; तु (tu) - indeed; वासोभिः (vāsobhiḥ) - with garments; जीवन् इव (jīvann iva) - as if alive; नरर्षभः (nararṣabhaḥ) - bull among men; शुशुभे (śuśubhe) - shone; पुरुष-व्याघ्रः (puruṣa-vyāghraḥ) - tiger among men; महार्ह-शयन-उचितः (mahārha-śayana-ucitaḥ) - fit for a costly bed;]
Then they clothed him with local white garments. Covered thus, the bull among men looked as if alive, shining like a tiger among men, fit for a costly bed.
याजकैरभ्यनुज्ञातं प्रेतकर्मणि निष्ठितैः । घृतावसिक्तं राजानं सह माद्र्या स्वलङ्कृतम् ॥१-११८-२१॥
yājakair abhyanujñātaṁ pretakarmaṇi niṣṭhitaiḥ। ghṛtāvasiktaṁ rājānaṁ saha mādryā sv-alaṅkṛtam॥21॥
[याजकैः (yājakaiḥ) - by officiating priests; अभ्यनुज्ञातम् (abhyanujñātam) - permitted; प्रेतकर्मणि (pretakarmaṇi) - in funeral rites; निष्ठितैः (niṣṭhitaiḥ) - resolved; घृत-आवसिक्तम् (ghṛta-āvasiktam) - anointed with ghee; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; सह (saha) - along with; माद्र्या (mādryā) - Mādrī; स्वलङ्कृतम् (sv-alaṅkṛtam) - well adorned;]
Permitted by the officiating priests who were resolved in the funeral rites, the king anointed with ghee and well adorned, along with Mādrī, was prepared.
तुङ्गपद्मकमिश्रेण चन्दनेन सुगन्धिना । अन्यैश्च विविधैर्गन्धैरनल्पैः समदाहयन् ॥१-११८-२२॥
tuṅgapadmakamiśreṇa candanena sugandhinā। anyaiś ca vividhair gandhair analpaiḥ samadāhayan॥22॥
[तुङ्गपद्मक-मिश्रेण (tuṅgapadmakamiśreṇa) - mixed with red sandalwood; चन्दनेन (candanena) - with sandalwood; सुगन्धिना (sugandhinā) - fragrant; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - with other; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - various; गन्धैः (gandhaiḥ) - fragrances; अनल्पैः (analpaiḥ) - plentiful; समदाहयन् (samadāhayan) - they cremated;]
They cremated with fragrant sandalwood mixed with red sandalwood and various other plentiful perfumes.
ततस्तयोः शरीरे ते दृष्ट्वा मोहवशं गता । हाहा पुत्रेति कौसल्या पपात सहसा भुवि ॥१-११८-२३॥
tatas tayoḥ śarīre te dṛṣṭvā mohavaśaṁ gatā। hā hā putreti kausalyā papāta sahasā bhuvi॥23॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; शरीरे (śarīre) - bodies; ते (te) - they; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; मोहवशं (mohavaśaṁ) - under the sway of delusion; गता (gatā) - went; हा हा (hā hā) - alas, alas; पुत्र (putra) - son; इति (iti) - thus; कौसल्या (kausalyā) - Kausalyā; पपात (papāta) - fell; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground;]
Then, seeing the bodies of the two, Kausalyā, overcome by delusion, cried "Alas, my son!" and suddenly fell to the ground.
तां प्रेक्ष्य पतितामार्तां पौरजानपदो जनः । रुरोद सस्वनं सर्वो राजभक्त्या कृपान्वितः ॥१-११८-२४॥
tāṁ prekṣya patitām ārtāṁ paurajānapado janaḥ। ruroda sasvanaṁ sarvo rājabhaktyā kṛpānvitaḥ॥24॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - seeing; पतिताम् (patitām) - fallen; आर्ताम् (ārtām) - afflicted; पौर-जानपदः (paura-jānapadaḥ) - city and country folk; जनः (janaḥ) - people; रुरोद (ruroda) - wept; सस्वनम् (sasvanam) - aloud; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - all; राजा-भक्त्या (rājabhaktyā) - out of devotion to the king; कृपा-अन्वितः (kṛpā-anvitaḥ) - filled with compassion;]
Seeing her fallen and afflicted, all the city and country folk wept aloud, filled with compassion and devotion to the king.
क्लान्तानीवार्तनादेन सर्वाणि च विचुक्रुशुः । मानुषैः सह भूतानि तिर्यग्योनिगतान्यपि ॥१-११८-२५॥
klāntānīv ārtanādena sarvāṇi ca vicukruśuḥ। mānuṣaiḥ saha bhūtāni tiryagyonigatāny api॥25॥
[क्लान्तानि-इव (klāntāni-iva) - as if exhausted; आर्तनादेन (ārtanādena) - by the cry of anguish; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; च (ca) - and; विचुक्रुशुः (vicukruśuḥ) - wailed; मानुषैः (mānuṣaiḥ) - with humans; सह (saha) - along with; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; तिर्यग्योनिगतानि (tiryagyonigatāni) - belonging to the animal realm; अपि (api) - even;]
All beings, even animals, wailed as if exhausted by the cry of anguish, along with the human beings.
तथा भीष्मः शान्तनवो विदुरश्च महामतिः । सर्वशः कौरवाश्चैव प्राणदन्भृशदुःखिताः ॥१-११८-२६॥
tathā bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavo viduraś ca mahāmatiḥ। sarvaśaḥ kauravāś caiva prāṇadan bhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ॥26॥
[तथा (tathā) - likewise; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - son of Śāntanu; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; च (ca) - and; महामतिः (mahāmatiḥ) - great intellect; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way; कौरवाः (kauravāḥ) - the Kauravas; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; प्राणदन् (prāṇadan) - sighing; भृश-दुःखिताः (bhṛśa-duḥkhitāḥ) - extremely distressed;]
Likewise Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu, and Vidura of great intellect, and all the Kauravas, sighed deeply and were extremely distressed.
ततो भीष्मोऽथ विदुरो राजा च सह बन्धुभिः । उदकं चक्रिरे तस्य सर्वाश्च कुरुयोषितः ॥१-११८-२७॥
tato bhīṣmo'tha viduro rājā ca saha bandhubhiḥ। udakaṁ cakrire tasya sarvāś ca kuruyoṣitaḥ॥27॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; अथ (atha) - and then; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; राजा (rājā) - the king; च (ca) - and; सह (saha) - along with; बन्धुभिः (bandhubhiḥ) - kinsmen; उदकम् (udakam) - water offering; चक्रिरे (cakrire) - performed; तस्य (tasya) - for him; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; च (ca) - and; कुरु-योषितः (kuru-yoṣitaḥ) - the women of the Kuru clan;]
Then Bhīṣma, Vidura, and the king, along with kinsmen, performed the water offering for him, along with all the Kuru women.
कृतोदकांस्तानादाय पाण्डवाञ्शोककर्शितान् । सर्वाः प्रकृतयो राजञ्शोचन्त्यः पर्यवारयन् ॥१-११८-२८॥
kṛtodakāṁs tān ādāya pāṇḍavāñ śokakarśitān। sarvāḥ prakṛtayo rājan śocantyaḥ paryavārayan॥28॥
[कृत-उदकान् (kṛta-udakān) - having performed water-offering; तान् (tān) - them; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; शोक-कर्शितान् (śoka-karśitān) - emaciated by grief; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; प्रकृतयः (prakṛtayaḥ) - subjects; राजन् (rājan) - O king; शोचन्त्यः (śocantyaḥ) - lamenting; पर्यवारयन् (paryavārayan) - surrounded;]
Having brought the grief-stricken Pāṇḍavas who had performed the water-offering, all the lamenting subjects surrounded them, O king.
यथैव पाण्डवा भूमौ सुषुपुः सह बान्धवैः । तथैव नागरा राजञ्शिश्यिरे ब्राह्मणादयः ॥१-११८-२९॥
yathaiva pāṇḍavā bhūmau suṣupuḥ saha bāndhavaiḥ। tathaiva nāgarā rājan śiśyire brāhmaṇādayaḥ॥29॥
[यथा एव (yathaiva) - just as; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; सुषुपुः (suṣupuḥ) - slept; सह (saha) - with; बान्धवैः (bāndhavaiḥ) - kinsmen; तथा एव (tathaiva) - likewise; नागराः (nāgarāḥ) - townspeople; राजन् (rājan) - O king; शिश्यिरे (śiśyire) - lay down; ब्राह्मण-आदयः (brāhmaṇa-ādayaḥ) - Brahmins and others;]
Just as the Pāṇḍavas slept on the ground with their kinsmen, so too did the townspeople, O king—Brahmins and others lay down likewise.
तदनानन्दमस्वस्थमाकुमारमहृष्टवत् । बभूव पाण्डवैः सार्धं नगरं द्वादश क्षपाः ॥१-११८-३०॥
tadanānandam asvastham ākumāram ahṛṣṭavat। babhūva pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdhaṁ nagaraṁ dvādaśa kṣapāḥ॥30॥
[तत् (tat) - that; अनानन्दम् (anānandam) - joyless; अस्वस्थम् (asvastham) - unwell; आकुमारम् (ākumāram) - including children; अहृष्टवत् (ahṛṣṭavat) - without cheer; बभूव (babhūva) - became; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pāṇḍavas; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together; नगरम् (nagaraṁ) - the city; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; क्षपाः (kṣapāḥ) - nights;]
For twelve nights the city, together with the Pāṇḍavas, became joyless, unwell, and without cheer, from elders to children alike.
