Core:Drona defeats Drupada with the help of his disciple and returns half the kingdom.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायनः (vaiśampāyanaḥ) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśampāyana said:
ततः शिष्यान्समानीय आचार्यार्थमचोदयत् । द्रोणः सर्वानशेषेण दक्षिणार्थं महीपते ॥१-१२८-१॥
tataḥ śiṣyānsamānīya ācāryārthamacodayat। droṇaḥ sarvānaśeṣeṇa dakṣiṇārthaṁ mahīpate॥1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शिष्यान् (śiṣyān) - disciples; समानीय (samānīya) - having assembled; आचार्यार्थम् (ācāryārtham) - for the sake of the teacher; अचोदयत् (acodayat) - urged; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अशेषेण (aśeṣeṇa) - completely; दक्षिणार्थं (dakṣiṇārthaṁ) - for the offering; महीपते (mahīpate) - O king;]
Then Droṇa, having assembled all his disciples, urged them completely for the sake of their teacher, O king, to bring the offering.
पाञ्चालराजं द्रुपदं गृहीत्वा रणमूर्धनि । पर्यानयत भद्रं वः सा स्यात्परमदक्षिणा ॥१-१२८-२॥
pāñcālarājaṁ drupadaṁ gṛhītvā raṇamūrdhani। paryānayata bhadraṁ vaḥ sā syātparamadakṣiṇā॥2॥
[पाञ्चालराजम् (pāñcālarājam) - the king of the Pāñcālas; द्रुपदम् (drupadam) - Drupada; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having captured; रणमूर्धनि (raṇamūrdhani) - in battle; पर्यानयत (paryānayata) - bring (him); भद्रं वः (bhadraṁ vaḥ) - blessings upon you; सा (sā) - that; स्यात् (syāt) - shall be; परमदक्षिणा (paramadakṣiṇā) - the supreme offering;]
Capture Drupada, king of the Pāñcālas, in battle and bring him; that shall be your supreme offering. Blessings upon you.
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु ते सर्वे रथैस्तूर्णं प्रहारिणः । आचार्यधनदानार्थं द्रोणेन सहिता ययुः ॥१-१२८-३॥
tathetyuktvā tu te sarve rathaistūrṇaṁ prahāriṇaḥ। ācāryadhanadānārthaṁ droṇena sahitā yayuḥ॥3॥
[तथेत्युक्त्वा (tathetyuktvā) - saying "so be it"; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; रथैः (rathaiḥ) - with chariots; तूर्णं (tūrṇam) - quickly; प्रहारिणः (prahāriṇaḥ) - attackers; आचार्यधनदानार्थम् (ācāryadhanadānārtham) - for the teacher's gift; द्रोणेन (droṇena) - with Droṇa; सहिता (sahitāḥ) - united; ययुः (yayuḥ) - went;]
Saying “so be it,” all of them quickly went with their chariots as warriors, united with Droṇa for the teacher's offering.
ततोऽभिजग्मुः पाञ्चालान्निघ्नन्तस्ते नरर्षभाः । ममृदुस्तस्य नगरं द्रुपदस्य महौजसः ॥१-१२८-४॥
tato'bhijagmuḥ pāñcālānnighnantaste nararṣabhāḥ। mamṛdustasya nagaraṁ drupadasya mahaujasaḥ॥4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभिजग्मुः (abhijagmuḥ) - they approached; पाञ्चालान् (pāñcālān) - the Pāñcālas; निघ्नन्तः (nighnantaḥ) - striking; ते (te) - they; नरर्षभाः (nararṣabhāḥ) - best among men; ममृदुः (mamṛduḥ) - they crushed; तस्य (tasya) - his; नगरम् (nagaram) - city; द्रुपदस्य (drupadasya) - of Drupada; महौजसः (mahaujasaḥ) - of great energy;]
Then those best among men attacked the Pāñcālas, and crushed the city of the mighty Drupada.
ते यज्ञसेनं द्रुपदं गृहीत्वा रणमूर्धनि । उपाजह्रुः सहामात्यं द्रोणाय भरतर्षभाः ॥१-१२८-५॥
te yajñasenaṁ drupadaṁ gṛhītvā raṇamūrdhani। upājahruḥ sahāmātyaṁ droṇāya bharatarṣabhāḥ॥5॥
[ते (te) - they; यज्ञसेनम् (yajñasenam) - Yajñasena; द्रुपदम् (drupadam) - Drupada; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having captured; रणमूर्धनि (raṇamūrdhani) - in the height of battle; उपाजह्रुः (upājahruḥ) - brought; सहामात्यम् (sahāmātyam) - with his ministers; द्रोणाय (droṇāya) - to Droṇa; भरतर्षभाः (bharatarṣabhāḥ) - best of the Bharatas;]
The best of the Bharatas captured Yajñasena Drupada in battle and brought him, along with his ministers, to Droṇa.
भग्नदर्पं हृतधनं तथा च वशमागतम् । स वैरं मनसा ध्यात्वा द्रोणो द्रुपदमब्रवीत् ॥१-१२८-६॥
bhagnadarpaṁ hṛtadhanaṁ tathā ca vaśamāgatam। sa vairaṁ manasā dhyātvā droṇo drupadamabravīt॥6॥
[भग्नदर्पम् (bhagnadarpam) - pride shattered; हृतधनम् (hṛtadhanam) - wealth taken; तथा (tathā) - and; च (ca) - also; वशम् (vaśam) - under control; आगतम् (āgatam) - come; सः (saḥ) - he; वैरम् (vairam) - enmity; मनसा (manasā) - in mind; ध्यात्वा (dhyātvā) - meditating; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; द्रुपदम् (drupadam) - to Drupada; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
Seeing Drupada, whose pride was broken, wealth taken, and brought under control, Droṇa, reflecting upon the enmity in his mind, spoke to him.
प्रमृद्य तरसा राष्ट्रं पुरं ते मृदितं मया । प्राप्य जीवन्रिपुवशं सखिपूर्वं किमिष्यते ॥१-१२८-७॥
pramṛdya tarasā rāṣṭraṁ puraṁ te mṛditaṁ mayā। prāpya jīvanripuvaśaṁ sakhipūrvaṁ kimiṣyate॥7॥
[प्रमृद्य (pramṛdya) - having crushed; तरसा (tarasā) - with force; राष्ट्रम् (rāṣṭram) - kingdom; पुरम् (puram) - city; ते (te) - your; मृदितम् (mṛditam) - destroyed; मया (mayā) - by me; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; जीवन् (jīvan) - alive; रिपुवशम् (ripuvaśam) - control of the enemy; सखिपूर्वम् (sakhipūrvam) - formerly a friend; किम् (kim) - what; इष्यते (iṣyate) - is desired;]
Having crushed your kingdom and city with force, and now having you under my control while alive—what is to be desired of a former friend?
एवमुक्त्वा प्रहस्यैनं निश्चित्य पुनरब्रवीत् । मा भैः प्राणभयाद्राजन्क्षमिणो ब्राह्मणा वयम् ॥१-१२८-८॥
evamuktvā prahasyainaṁ niścitya punarabravīt। mā bhaiḥ prāṇabhayādrājankṣamiṇo brāhmaṇā vayam॥8॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - smiling; एनम् (enam) - to him; निश्चित्य (niścitya) - resolving; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; मा भैः (mā bhaiḥ) - do not fear; प्राणभयात् (prāṇabhayāt) - from fear of life; राजन् (rājan) - O king; क्षमिणः (kṣamiṇaḥ) - forgiving; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - we Brāhmaṇas; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
Thus speaking and smiling, he resolved and again said: “Fear not for your life, O king. We Brāhmaṇas are forgiving.”
आश्रमे क्रीडितं यत्तु त्वया बाल्ये मया सह । तेन संवर्धितः स्नेहस्त्वया मे क्षत्रियर्षभ ॥१-१२८-९॥
āśrame krīḍitaṁ yattu tvayā bālye mayā saha। tena saṁvardhitaḥ snehastvayā me kṣatriyarṣabha॥9॥
[आश्रमे (āśrame) - in the hermitage; क्रीडितम् (krīḍitam) - that which was played; यत् (yat) - which; तु (tu) - indeed; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; बाल्ये (bālye) - in childhood; मया (mayā) - by me; सह (saha) - with; तेन (tena) - by that; संवर्धितः (saṁvardhitaḥ) - grown; स्नेहः (snehaḥ) - affection; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; मे (me) - my; क्षत्रियर्षभ (kṣatriyarṣabha) - O best of Kṣatriyas;]
O best of Kṣatriyas, the games we played together in our childhood in the hermitage—by that, my affection for you has grown.
प्रार्थयेयं त्वया सख्यं पुनरेव नरर्षभ । वरं ददामि ते राजन्राज्यस्यार्धमवाप्नुहि ॥१-१२८-१०॥
prārthayeyaṁ tvayā sakhyaṁ punareva nararṣabha। varaṁ dadāmi te rājanrājyasyārdhamavāpnuhi॥10॥
[प्रार्थयेयम् (prārthayeyam) - I seek; त्वया (tvayā) - from you; सख्यम् (sakhyam) - friendship; पुनः एव (punaḥ eva) - once again; नरर्षभ (nararṣabha) - O best of men; वरम् (varam) - boon; ददामि (dadāmi) - I give; ते (te) - to you; राजन् (rājan) - O king; राज्यस्य (rājyasya) - of the kingdom; अर्धम् (ardham) - half; अवाप्नुहि (avāpnuhi) - obtain;]
I seek friendship from you once again, O best of men. I grant you a boon, O king—obtain half of your kingdom.
अराजा किल नो राज्ञां सखा भवितुमर्हति । अतः प्रयतितं राज्ये यज्ञसेन मया तव ॥१-१२८-११॥
arājā kila no rājñāṁ sakhā bhavitumarhati। ataḥ prayatitaṁ rājye yajñasena mayā tava॥11॥
[अराजा (arājā) - one without a kingdom; किल (kila) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - of us; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of kings; सखा (sakhā) - friend; भवितुम् (bhavitum) - to become; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; प्रयतितम् (prayatitam) - was exerted; राज्ये (rājye) - in gaining the kingdom; यज्ञसेन (yajñasena) - O Yajñasena; मया (mayā) - by me; तव (tava) - for you;]
One without a kingdom is indeed unworthy of being a friend to kings. Therefore, O Yajñasena, I exerted myself to gain you a kingdom.
राजासि दक्षिणे कूले भागीरथ्याहमुत्तरे । सखायं मां विजानीहि पाञ्चाल यदि मन्यसे ॥१-१२८-१२॥
rājāsi dakṣiṇe kūle bhāgīrathyāhamuttare। sakhāyaṁ māṁ vijānīhi pāñcāla yadi manyase॥12॥
[राजा (rājā) - king; असि (asi) - you are; दक्षिणे (dakṣiṇe) - on the southern; कूले (kūle) - bank; भागीरथ्याः (bhāgīrathyāḥ) - of the Gaṅgā; अहम् (aham) - I; उत्तरे (uttare) - on the northern; सखा (sakhā) - friend; अयम् (ayam) - this; माम् (mām) - me; विजानीहि (vijānīhi) - know; पाञ्चाल (pāñcāla) - O Pāñcāla; यदि (yadi) - if; मन्यसे (manyase) - you consider;]
You are king on the southern bank of the Gaṅgā; I am on the northern. Know me as your friend, O Pāñcāla, if you consider it right.
द्रुपद उवाच॥

[द्रुपदः (drupadaḥ) - Drupada; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Drupada said:
अनाश्चर्यमिदं ब्रह्मन्विक्रान्तेषु महात्मसु । प्रीये त्वयाहं त्वत्तश्च प्रीतिमिच्छामि शाश्वतीम् ॥१-१२८-१३॥
anāścaryamidaṁ brahmanvikrānteṣu mahātmasu। prīye tvayāhaṁ tvattaśca prītimicchāmi śāśvatīm॥13॥
[अनाश्चर्यम् (anāścaryam) - not surprising; इदं (idaṁ) - this; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brāhmaṇa; विक्रान्तेषु (vikrānteṣu) - among the valiant; महात्मसु (mahātmasu) - great souls; प्रीये (prīye) - I am pleased; त्वया (tvayā) - with you; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; च (ca) - and; प्रीतिम् (prītim) - friendship; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; शाश्वतीम् (śāśvatīm) - everlasting;]
O Brāhmaṇa, this is not surprising among the valiant and great souls. I am pleased with you and desire eternal friendship from you.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

Vaiśampāyana said:
एवमुक्तस्तु तं द्रोणो मोक्षयामास भारत । सत्कृत्य चैनं प्रीतात्मा राज्यार्धं प्रत्यपादयत् ॥१-१२८-१४॥
evamuktastu taṁ droṇo mokṣayāmāsa bhārata। satkṛtya cainaṁ prītātmā rājyārdhaṁ pratyapādayat॥14॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; तु (tu) - then; तम् (tam) - him; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; मोक्षयामास (mokṣayāmāsa) - released; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; सत्कृत्य (satkṛtya) - having honored; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; प्रीतात्मा (prītātmā) - pleased at heart; राज्यार्धम् (rājyārdham) - half the kingdom; प्रत्यपादयत् (pratyapādayat) - gave;]
Thus addressed, Droṇa released him, O Bhārata, and, honoring him with a pleased heart, gave him half the kingdom.
माकन्दीमथ गङ्गायास्तीरे जनपदायुताम् । सोऽध्यावसद्दीनमनाः काम्पिल्यं च पुरोत्तमम् ॥ दक्षिणांश्चैव पाञ्चालान्यावच्चर्मण्वती नदी ॥१-१२८-१५॥
mākandīmatha gaṅgāyāstīre janapadāyutām। so'dhyāvasaddīnamanāḥ kāmpilyaṁ ca purottamam॥ dakṣiṇāṁścaiva pāñcālānyāvaccarmaṇvatī nadī॥15॥
[माकन्दीम् (mākandīm) - Mākanḍī; अथ (atha) - then; गङ्गायाः (gaṅgāyāḥ) - of the Gaṅgā; तीरे (tīre) - on the bank; जनपदायुताम् (janapadāyutām) - attached with territory; सः (saḥ) - he; अध्यावसत् (adhyāvasat) - dwelled; दीनमनाः (dīnamanāḥ) - with a dejected mind; काम्पिल्यम् (kāmpilyam) - Kāmpilya; च (ca) - and; पुरोत्तमम् (purottamam) - excellent city; दक्षिणान् (dakṣiṇān) - southern; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पाञ्चालान् (pāñcālān) - Pāñcālas; यावत् (yāvat) - until; चर्मण्वती (carmaṇvatī) - Carmaṇvatī; नदी (nadī) - river;]
He, with a dejected mind, dwelled at Mākanḍī on the bank of the Gaṅgā, a territory with people, and in the excellent city of Kāmpilya, and ruled the southern Pāñcāla region up to the river Carmaṇvatī.
द्रोणेन वैरं द्रुपदः संस्मरन्न शशाम ह । क्षात्रेण च बलेनास्य नापश्यत्स पराजयम् ॥१-१२८-१६॥
droṇena vairaṁ drupadaḥ saṁsmaranna śaśāma ha। kṣātreṇa ca balenāsya nāpaśyatsa parājayam॥16॥
[द्रोणेन (droṇena) - with Droṇa; वैरम् (vairam) - enmity; द्रुपदः (drupadaḥ) - Drupada; संस्मरन् (saṁsmaran) - remembering; न (na) - not; शशाम (śaśāma) - ceased; क्षात्रेण (kṣātreṇa) - by kṣatriya; च (ca) - and; बलेन (balena) - power; अस्य (asya) - his; न (na) - not; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; सः (saḥ) - he; पराजयम् (parājayam) - defeat;]
Drupada, remembering his enmity with Droṇa, did not cease from it. With Kṣatriya power, he saw no defeat of him.
हीनं विदित्वा चात्मानं ब्राह्मणेन बलेन च । पुत्रजन्म परीप्सन्वै स राजा तदधारयत् ॥ अहिच्छत्रं च विषयं द्रोणः समभिपद्यत ॥१-१२८-१७॥
hīnaṁ viditvā cātmānaṁ brāhmaṇena balena ca। putrajanma parīpsanvai sa rājā tadadhārayat॥ ahićchatraṁ ca viṣayaṁ droṇaḥ samabhipadyata॥17॥
[हीनम् (hīnam) - deficient; विदित्वा (viditvā) - having known; च (ca) - and; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; ब्राह्मणेन (brāhmaṇena) - by the Brāhmaṇa; बलेन (balena) - in strength; च (ca) - and; पुत्रजन्म (putrajanma) - birth of a son; परीप्सन् (parīpsan) - desiring; वै (vai) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; राजा (rājā) - the king; तत् (tat) - that; अधारयत् (adhārayat) - held in mind; अहिच्छत्रम् (ahićchatram) - Ahicchatra; च (ca) - and; विषयम् (viṣayam) - territory; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; समभिपद्यत (samabhipadyata) - attained;]
Knowing himself as deficient in strength compared to the Brāhmaṇa, and desiring a son, the king held that in mind. Droṇa attained the territory of Ahicchatra.
एवं राजन्नहिच्छत्रा पुरी जनपदायुता । युधि निर्जित्य पार्थेन द्रोणाय प्रतिपादिता ॥१-१२८-१८॥
evaṁ rājannahićchatrā purī janapadāyutā। yudhi nirjitya pārthena droṇāya pratipāditā॥18॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अहिच्छत्रा (ahićchatrā) - Ahicchatra; पुरी (purī) - city; जनपदायुता (janapadāyutā) - with its region; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; निर्जित्य (nirjitya) - having conquered; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Arjuna; द्रोणाय (droṇāya) - to Droṇa; प्रतिपादिता (pratipāditā) - was given;]
Thus, O king, the city of Ahicchatra with its region, having been conquered in battle by Arjuna, was given to Droṇa.
