He said to Bhīma:
स्मरन्ति वैरं रक्षांसि मायामाश्रित्य मोहिनीम् । हिडिम्बे व्रज पन्थानं त्वं वै भ्रातृनिषेवितम् ॥१॥
smaranti vairaṁ rakṣāṁsi māyām āśritya mohinīm। hiḍimbe vraja panthānaṁ tvaṁ vai bhrātṛ-niṣevitam॥1॥
[स्मरन्ति (smaranti) - remember; वैरम् (vairam) - enmity; रक्षांसि (rakṣāṁsi) - demons; मायाम् (māyām) - illusion; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - resorting to; मोहिनीम् (mohinīm) - deluding; हिडिम्बे (hiḍimbe) - O Hiḍimbā; व्रज (vraja) - go; पन्थानम् (panthānam) - the path; त्वम् (tvam) - you; वै (vai) - indeed; भ्रातृ-निषेवितम् (bhrātṛ-niṣevitam) - frequented by your brother;]
Demons remember enmity, resorting to deluding illusion. O Hiḍimbā, go by the path frequented by your brother.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca॥
[युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Yudhiṣṭhira said:
क्रुद्धोऽपि पुरुषव्याघ्र भीम मा स्म स्त्रियं वधीः । शरीरगुप्त्याभ्यधिकं धर्मं गोपय पाण्डव ॥२॥
kruddho'pi puruṣa-vyāghra bhīma mā sma striyaṁ vadhīḥ। śarīra-gupty-ābhyadhikaṁ dharmaṁ gopaya pāṇḍava॥2॥
[क्रुद्धः अपि (kruddhaḥ api) - even if enraged; पुरुष-व्याघ्र (puruṣa-vyāghra) - O tiger among men; भीम (bhīma) - Bhīma; मा स्म (mā sma) - do not; स्त्रियम् (striyam) - a woman; वधीः (vadhīḥ) - kill; शरीर-गुप्ति-आभ्यधिकम् (śarīra-gupti-ābhyadhikam) - greater than bodily protection; धर्मम् (dharmaṁ) - dharma; गोपय (gopaya) - protect; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava;]
Even if enraged, O tiger among men Bhīma, do not kill a woman. Protect dharma, which is greater than bodily protection, O Pāṇḍava.
वधाभिप्रायमायान्तमवधीस्त्वं महाबलम् । रक्षसस्तस्य भगिनी किं नः क्रुद्धा करिष्यति ॥३॥
vadhābhiprāyam āyāntam avadhīs tvaṁ mahābalam। rakṣasas tasya bhaginī kiṁ naḥ kruddhā kariṣyati॥3॥
[वध-अभिप्रायम् (vadhābhiprāyam) - with intent to kill; आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - approaching; अवधीः (avadhīḥ) - you killed; त्वम् (tvam) - you; महा-बलम् (mahābalam) - the mighty one; रक्षसः (rakṣasaḥ) - of the demon; तस्य (tasya) - his; भगिनी (bhaginī) - sister; किम् (kim) - what; नः (naḥ) - to us; क्रुद्धा (kruddhā) - being angry; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do;]
You killed the mighty one who came to kill. What can his sister do to us in anger?
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायनः (vaiśampāyanaḥ) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśampāyana said:
हिडिम्बा तु ततः कुन्तीमभिवाद्य कृताञ्जलिः । युधिष्ठिरं च कौन्तेयमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥४॥
hiḍimbā tu tataḥ kuntīm abhivādya kṛtāñjaliḥ। yudhiṣṭhiraṁ ca kaunteyam idaṁ vacanam abravīt॥4॥
[हिडिम्बा (hiḍimbā) - Hiḍimbā; तु (tu) - then; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; कुन्तीम् (kuntīm) - to Kuntī; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - bowing down; कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira; च (ca) - and; कौन्तेयम् (kaunteyam) - son of Kuntī; इदम् (idam) - these; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
Then Hiḍimbā, bowing to Kuntī with joined palms, spoke these words to Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī.
आर्ये जानासि यद्दुःखमिह स्त्रीणामनङ्गजम् । तदिदं मामनुप्राप्तं भीमसेनकृतं शुभे ॥५॥
ārye jānāsi yad duḥkham iha strīṇām anaṅga-jam। tad idaṁ mām anuprāptaṁ bhīmasena-kṛtaṁ śubhe॥5॥
[आर्ये (ārye) - O noble lady; जानासि (jānāsi) - you know; यत् दुःखम् (yat duḥkham) - what sorrow; इह (iha) - here; स्त्रीणाम् (strīṇām) - of women; अनङ्गजम् (anaṅga-jam) - caused by love; तत् (tat) - that; इदम् (idam) - this; माम् (mām) - to me; अनुप्राप्तम् (anuprāptam) - has come; भीमसेन-कृतम् (bhīmasena-kṛtam) - caused by Bhīmasena; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one;]
O noble lady, you know the sorrow women suffer from love — that has now come upon me, caused by Bhīmasena, O auspicious one.
सोढं तत्परमं दुःखं मया कालप्रतीक्षया । सोऽयमभ्यागतः कालो भविता मे सुखाय वै ॥६॥
soḍhaṁ tat paramaṁ duḥkhaṁ mayā kāla-pratīkṣayā। so'yam abhyāgataḥ kālo bhavitā me sukhāya vai॥6॥
[सोढम् (soḍham) - endured; तत् (tat) - that; परमम् (paramam) - great; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; मया (mayā) - by me; काल-प्रतीक्षया (kāla-pratīkṣayā) - by awaiting the right time; सः अयम् (saḥ ayam) - now this; अभ्यागतः (abhyāgataḥ) - has come; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; भविता (bhavitā) - will become; मे (me) - for me; सुखाय (sukhāya) - for happiness; वै (vai) - indeed;]
I endured that great sorrow by awaiting the right time. Now that time has come — it will bring me happiness indeed.
मया ह्युत्सृज्य सुहृदः स्वधर्मं स्वजनं तथा । वृतोऽयं पुरुषव्याघ्रस्तव पुत्रः पतिः शुभे ॥७॥
mayā hy utsṛjya suhṛdaḥ sva-dharmaṁ sva-janaṁ tathā। vṛto'yaṁ puruṣa-vyāghras tava putraḥ patiḥ śubhe॥7॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; हि (hi) - indeed; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - abandoning; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; स्वधर्मम् (sva-dharmaṁ) - own duty; स्वजनम् (sva-janam) - own people; तथा (tathā) - also; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - chosen; अयम् (ayam) - this; पुरुष-व्याघ्रः (puruṣa-vyāghraḥ) - tiger among men; तव (tava) - your; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; पतिः (patiḥ) - husband; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one;]
Having abandoned friends, duty, and kin, I have chosen this tiger among men — your son — as husband, O auspicious one.
वरेणापि तथानेन त्वया चापि यशस्विनि । तथा ब्रुवन्ती हि तदा प्रत्याख्याता क्रियां प्रति ॥८॥
vareṇāpi tathānena tvayā cāpi yaśasvini। tathā bruvantī hi tadā pratyākhyātā kriyāṁ prati॥8॥
[वरेण अपि (vareṇa api) - even by boon; तथा अनेन (tathā anena) - likewise by him; त्वया च अपि (tvayā ca api) - and by you; यशस्विनि (yaśasvini) - O illustrious one; तथा (tathā) - thus; ब्रुवन्ती (bruvantī) - speaking; हि (hi) - indeed; तदा (tadā) - then; प्रत्याख्याता (pratyākhyātā) - rejected; क्रियाम् प्रति (kriyāṁ prati) - in regard to union;]
Though granted by boon by him and also by you, O illustrious one, I was denied union even while pleading thus.
त्वं मां मूढेति वा मत्वा भक्ता वानुगतेति वा । भर्त्रानेन महाभागे संयोजय सुतेन ते ॥९॥
tvaṁ māṁ mūḍheti vā matvā bhaktā vā anugateti vā। bhartrā anena mahā-bhāge saṁyojaya sutena te॥9॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; माम् (mām) - me; मूढेति वा (mūḍheti vā) - as deluded or; भक्तम् वा (bhaktam vā) - or as devoted; अनुगतम् इति वा (anugatam iti vā) - or as a follower; भर्त्रा अनेन (bhartrā anena) - with this husband; महाभागे (mahā-bhāge) - O greatly fortunate; संयोजय (saṁyojaya) - unite; सुतेन (sutena) - with your son; ते (te) - your;]
Whether you think me deluded, or a devotee, or a follower — O greatly fortunate one, unite me with your son as wife to this husband.
तमुपादाय गच्छेयं यथेष्टं देवरूपिणम् । पुनश्चैवागमिष्यामि विश्रम्भं कुरु मे शुभे ॥१०॥
tam upādāya gaccheyaṁ yatheṣṭaṁ deva-rūpiṇam। punaś caiva āgamiṣyāmi viśrambhaṁ kuru me śubhe॥10॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उपादाय (upādāya) - taking along; गच्छेयम् (gaccheyam) - I may go; यथेष्टम् (yatheṣṭam) - as I please; देव-रूपिणम् (deva-rūpiṇam) - godlike one; पुनः च एव (punaś ca eva) - and again; आगमिष्यामि (āgamiṣyāmi) - I shall return; विश्रम्भम् (viśrambham) - trust; कुरु (kuru) - place; मे (me) - in me; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one;]
Taking this godlike one with me, I will go as I wish and shall return again — place trust in me, O auspicious one.
अहं हि मनसा ध्याता सर्वान्नेष्यामि वः सदा । वृजिने तारयिष्यामि दुर्गेषु च नरर्षभान् ॥११॥
ahaṁ hi manasā dhyātā sarvān neṣyāmi vaḥ sadā। vṛjine tārayiṣyāmi durgeṣu ca nararṣabhān॥11॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; हि (hi) - indeed; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; ध्याता (dhyātā) - meditated upon; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all (of you); नेष्यामि (neṣyāmi) - I will lead; वः (vaḥ) - you; सदा (sadā) - always; वृजिने (vṛjine) - in danger; तारयिष्यामि (tārayiṣyāmi) - I will rescue; दुर्गेषु (durgeṣu) - in difficulties; च (ca) - and; नरर्षभान् (nararṣabhān) - best of men;]
Indeed, when meditated upon, I will always lead all of you. I will rescue the best of men in dangers and difficulties.
पृष्ठेन वो वहिष्यामि शीघ्रां गतिमभीप्सतः । यूयं प्रसादं कुरुत भीमसेनो भजेत माम् ॥१२॥
pṛṣṭhena vo vahiṣyāmi śīghrāṁ gatim abhīpsataḥ। yūyaṁ prasādaṁ kuruta bhīmaseno bhajeta mām॥12॥
[पृष्ठेन (pṛṣṭhena) - on my back; वः (vaḥ) - you all; वहिष्यामि (vahiṣyāmi) - I will carry; शीघ्राम् (śīghrām) - swift; गतिम् (gatim) - movement; अभीप्सतः (abhīpsataḥ) - for those desiring; यूयम् (yūyam) - you all; प्रसादम् (prasādam) - favor; कुरुत (kuruta) - show; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; भजेत (bhajeta) - should accept; माम् (mām) - me;]
I will carry you all swiftly on my back as desired. Grant your favor, and let Bhīmasena accept me.
आपदस्तरणे प्राणान्धारयेद्येन येन हि । सर्वमादृत्य कर्तव्यं तद्धर्ममनुवर्तता ॥१३॥
āpadastarāṇe prāṇān dhārayed yena yena hi। sarvam ādṛtya kartavyaṁ tad dharmaṁ anuvartatā॥13॥
[आपदस्तरणे (āpadastarāṇe) - in overcoming calamity; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life; धारयेत् (dhārayet) - one may preserve; येन येन (yena yena) - by whatever means; हि (hi) - indeed; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; आदृत्य (ādṛtya) - respectfully; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - should be done; तत् (tat) - that; धर्मम् (dharmaṁ) - dharma; अनुवर्तता (anuvartatā) - by one following;]
By whatever means one preserves life in calamity, everything should be respectfully done — such is the dharma for the follower.
आपत्सु यो धारयति ध्रमं धर्मविदुत्तमः । व्यसनं ह्येव धर्मस्य धर्मिणामापदुच्यते ॥१४॥
āpatsu yo dhārayati dharmaṁ dharma-vid uttamaḥ। vyasanaṁ hy eva dharmasya dharmiṇām āpad ucyate॥14॥
[आपत्सु (āpatsu) - in calamities; यः (yaḥ) - who; धारयति (dhārayati) - upholds; धर्मम् (dharmaṁ) - dharma; धर्मविद् (dharmavid) - knower of dharma; उत्तमः (uttamaḥ) - is supreme; व्यसनम् (vyasanam) - affliction; हि एव (hi eva) - truly; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; धर्मिणाम् (dharmaṇām) - of the righteous; आपद् (āpada) - calamity; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said to be;]
He who upholds dharma even in calamities is the best knower of dharma. Affliction to dharma is said to be the true calamity for the righteous.
पुण्यं प्राणान्धारयति पुण्यं प्राणदमुच्यते । येन येनाचरेद्धर्मं तस्मिन्गर्हा न विद्यते ॥१५॥
puṇyaṁ prāṇān dhārayati puṇyaṁ prāṇadam ucyate। yena yenācareddharmaṁ tasmin garhā na vidyate॥15॥
[पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - virtue; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life; धारयति (dhārayati) - sustains; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - virtuous; प्राणदम् (prāṇadam) - giver of life; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called; येन येन (yena yena) - by whatever means; आचरेत् (ācaret) - one follows; धर्मम् (dharmaṁ) - dharma; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; गर्हा (garhā) - reproach; न विद्यते (na vidyate) - does not exist;]
Virtue sustains life, and the giver of life is called virtuous. By whatever means one follows dharma, there is no reproach therein.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca॥
[युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Yudhiṣṭhira said:
एवमेतद्यथात्थ त्वं हिडिम्बे नात्र संशयः । स्थातव्यं तु त्वया धर्मे यथा ब्रूयां सुमध्यमे ॥१६॥
evam etad yathāttha tvaṁ hiḍimbe nātra saṁśayaḥ। sthātavyaṁ tu tvayā dharme yathā brūyāṁ sumadhyame॥16॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; यथा आत्तः (yathā āttha) - as you have said; त्वम् (tvam) - you; हिडिम्बे (hiḍimbe) - O Hiḍimbā; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt; स्थातव्यम् (sthātavyam) - must be established; तु (tu) - but; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; धर्मे (dharme) - in dharma; यथा (yathā) - as; ब्रूयाम् (brūyām) - I would say; सुमध्यमे (sumadhyame) - O slender-waisted one;]
What you have said is true, O Hiḍimbā, there is no doubt. But you must remain established in dharma as I would instruct, O slender-waisted one.
स्नातं कृताह्निकं भद्रे कृतकौतुकमङ्गलम् । भीमसेनं भजेथास्त्वं प्रागस्तगमनाद्रवेः ॥१७॥
snātaṁ kṛtāhnikaṁ bhadre kṛta-kautuka-maṅgalam। bhīmasenaṁ bhajethās tvaṁ prāg asta-gamanād raveḥ॥17॥
[स्नातम् (snātam) - bathed; कृत-अह्निकम् (kṛta-ahnikaṁ) - having performed daily rites; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; कृत-कौतुक-मङ्गलम् (kṛta-kautuka-maṅgalam) - having completed the auspicious ceremony; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - Bhīmasena; भजेथाः (bhajethāḥ) - you may unite with; त्वम् (tvam) - you; प्राक् (prāk) - before; अस्त-गमनात् (asta-gamanāt) - the setting; रवेः (raveḥ) - of the sun;]
After bathing, performing daily rites, and completing the auspicious ceremony, you may unite with Bhīmasena before sunset, O auspicious one.
अहःसु विहरानेन यथाकामं मनोजवा । अयं त्वानयितव्यस्ते भीमसेनः सदा निशि ॥१८॥
ahaḥsu viharānena yathākāmaṁ manojavā। ayaṁ tv ānayatavyas te bhīmasenaḥ sadā niśi॥18॥
[अहःसु (ahaḥsu) - by day; विहर (vihara) - roam; अनेन (anena) - with him; यथा-कामम् (yathā-kāmam) - as you desire; मनोजवा (manojavā) - O swift as mind; अयम् (ayam) - this one; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; आनयितव्यः (ānayatavyaḥ) - must be brought; ते (te) - to you; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; सदा (sadā) - always; निशि (niśi) - by night;]
Roam with him by day as you wish, O swift one. But by night, Bhīmasena must be brought back to you always.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायनः (vaiśampāyanaḥ) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśampāyana said:
तथेति तत्प्रतिज्ञाय हिडिम्बा राक्षसी तदा । भीमसेनमुपादाय ऊर्ध्वमाचक्रमे ततः ॥१९॥
tatheti tat pratijñāya hiḍimbā rākṣasī tadā। bhīmasenam upādāya ūrdhvam ācakrame tataḥ॥19॥
[तथा इति (tathā iti) - so be it; तत् (tat) - that; प्रतिज्ञाय (pratijñāya) - having vowed; हिडिम्बा (hiḍimbā) - Hiḍimbā; राक्षसी (rākṣasī) - the rākṣasī; तदा (tadā) - then; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - Bhīmasena; उपादाय (upādāya) - having taken up; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - upward; आचक्रमे (ācakrame) - ascended; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
Saying “so be it,” and making her vow, the rākṣasī Hiḍimbā then took up Bhīmasena and ascended upward.
शैलशृङ्गेषु रम्येषु देवतायतनेषु च । मृगपक्षिविघुष्टेषु रमणीयेषु सर्वदा ॥२०॥
śaila-śṛṅgeṣu ramyeṣu devatāyataneṣu ca। mṛga-pakṣi-vighuṣṭeṣu ramaṇīyeṣu sarvadā॥20॥
[शैल-शृङ्गेषु (śaila-śṛṅgeṣu) - on mountain peaks; रम्येषु (ramyeṣu) - in delightful; देवता-आयतनेषु (devatāyataneṣu) - in temples of the gods; च (ca) - and; मृग-पक्षि-विघुष्टेषु (mṛga-pakṣi-vighuṣṭeṣu) - filled with cries of animals and birds; रमणीयेषु (ramaṇīyeṣu) - in beautiful places; सर्वदा (sarvadā) - always;]
In lovely mountain peaks, in temples of the gods, in places filled with cries of animals and birds — always in beautiful spots—
कृत्वा च परमं रूपं सर्वाभरणभूषिता । सञ्जल्पन्ती सुमधुरं रमयामास पाण्डवम् ॥२१॥
kṛtvā ca paramaṁ rūpaṁ sarvābharaṇa-bhūṣitā। sañjalpantī sumadhuraṁ ramayām āsa pāṇḍavam॥21॥
[कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having assumed; च (ca) - and; परमं (paramam) - supreme; रूपं (rūpaṁ) - form; सर्व-अभरण-भूषिता (sarva-ābharaṇa-bhūṣitā) - adorned with all ornaments; सञ्जल्पन्ती (sañjalpantī) - speaking charmingly; सुमधुरं (sumadhuraṁ) - very sweetly; रमयामास (ramayām āsa) - she delighted; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - the Pāṇḍava (Bhīma);]
Having assumed a supreme form, adorned with all ornaments, and speaking very sweetly, she delighted the Pāṇḍava.
तथैव वनदुर्गेषु पुष्पितद्रुमसानुषु । सरःसु रमणीयेषु पद्मोत्पलयुतेषु च ॥२२॥
tathaiva vana-durgeṣu puṣpita-druma-sānuṣu। saraḥsu ramaṇīyeṣu padma-utpala-yuteṣu ca॥22॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; वन-दुर्गेषु (vana-durgeṣu) - in forest fortresses; पुष्पित-द्रुम-सानुषु (puṣpita-druma-sānuṣu) - on flower-laden tree slopes; सरःसु (saraḥsu) - in lakes; रमणीयेषु (ramaṇīyeṣu) - delightful; पद्म-उत्पल-युतेषु (padma-utpala-yuteṣu) - filled with lotuses and water-lilies; च (ca) - and;]
Likewise, on flower-laden forest slopes and in delightful lakes filled with lotuses and water-lilies—
नदीद्वीपप्रदेशेषु वैडूर्यसिकतासु च । सुतीर्थवनतोयासु तथा गिरिनदीषु च ॥२३॥
nadī-dvīpa-pradeśeṣu vaiḍūrya-sikatāsu ca। su-tīrtha-vana-toyāsu tathā giri-nadīṣu ca॥23॥
[नदी-द्वीप-प्रदेशेषु (nadī-dvīpa-pradeśeṣu) - in river-island regions; वैडूर्य-सिकतासु (vaiḍūrya-sikatāsu) - on beryl-sanded shores; च (ca) - and; सु-तीर्थ-वन्-तोयासु (su-tīrtha-vana-toyāsu) - in waters of sacred forest places; तथा (tathā) - likewise; गिरि-नदीषु (giri-nadīṣu) - in mountain streams; च (ca) - and;]
In river-island regions with beryl sands, in sacred forest waters, and in mountain streams—
सगरस्य प्रदेशेषु मणिहेमचितेषु च । पत्तनेषु च रम्येषु महाशालवनेषु च ॥२४॥
sagarasya pradeśeṣu maṇi-hema-citeṣu ca। pattaneṣu ca ramyeṣu mahā-śāla-vaneṣu ca॥24॥
[सगरस्य (sagarasya) - of the ocean; प्रदेशेषु (pradeśeṣu) - in regions; मणि-हेम-चितेषु (maṇi-hema-citeṣu) - decorated with jewels and gold; च (ca) - and; पत्तनेषु (pattaneṣu) - in towns; रम्येषु (ramyeṣu) - delightful; महा-शाल-वनेषु (mahā-śāla-vaneṣu) - in great shāla forests; च (ca) - and;]
In ocean regions adorned with jewels and gold, in delightful towns and great shāla forests—
देवारण्येषु पुण्येषु तथा पर्वतसानुषु । गुह्यकानां निवासेषु तापसायतनेषु च ॥२५॥
devāraṇyeṣu puṇyeṣu tathā parvata-sānuṣu। guhyakānāṁ nivāseṣu tāpasāyataneṣu ca॥25॥
[देव-अरण्येषु (devāraṇyeṣu) - in divine forests; पुण्येषु (puṇyeṣu) - holy; तथा (tathā) - likewise; पर्वत-सानुषु (parvata-sānuṣu) - on mountain slopes; गुह्यकानाम् (guhyakānām) - of celestial beings; निवासेषु (nivāseṣu) - in dwellings; तापस-आयतनेषु (tāpasāyataneṣu) - in hermitages; च (ca) - and;]
In sacred divine forests, on mountain slopes, in celestial dwellings, and in hermitages—
सर्वर्तुफलपुष्पेषु मानसेषु सरःसु च । बिभ्रती परमं रूपं रमयामास पाण्डवम् ॥२६॥
sarva-ṛtu-phala-puṣpeṣu mānaseṣu saraḥsu ca। bibhratī paramaṁ rūpaṁ ramayām āsa pāṇḍavam॥26॥
[सर्व-ऋतु-फल-पुष्पेषु (sarva-ṛtu-phala-puṣpeṣu) - in places with fruits and flowers of all seasons; मानसेषु (mānaseṣu) - in Mānasa lakes; सरःसु (saraḥsu) - in lakes; च (ca) - and; बिभ्रती (bibhratī) - assuming; परमं (paramam) - supreme; रूपं (rūpaṁ) - form; रमयामास (ramayām āsa) - she delighted; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - the Pāṇḍava (Bhīma);]
In places bearing fruits and flowers of all seasons, in Mānasa and other lakes, assuming a supreme form, she delighted the Pāṇḍava.
रमयन्ती तथा भीमं तत्र तत्र मनोजवा । प्रजज्ञे राक्षसी पुत्रं भीमसेनान्महाबलम् ॥२७॥
ramayantī tathā bhīmaṁ tatra tatra manojavā। prajajñe rākṣasī putraṁ bhīmasenān mahā-balam॥27॥
[रमयन्ती (ramayantī) - delighting; तथा (tathā) - thus; भीमम् (bhīmam) - Bhīma; तत्र तत्र (tatra tatra) - here and there; मनोजवा (manojavā) - swift as thought; प्रजज्ञे (prajajñe) - gave birth; राक्षसी (rākṣasī) - the demoness; पुत्रम् (putram) - a son; भीमसेनात् (bhīmasenāt) - from Bhīmasena; महा-बलम् (mahā-balam) - of great strength;]
Delighting Bhīma here and there, swift as thought, the demoness gave birth to a son of great strength from Bhīmasena.
विरूपाक्षं महावक्त्रं शङ्कुकर्णं विभीषणम् । भीमरूपं सुताम्रोष्ठं तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रं महाबलम् ॥२८॥
virūpākṣaṁ mahā-vaktraṁ śaṅku-karṇaṁ vibhīṣaṇam। bhīma-rūpaṁ su-tāmra-oṣṭhaṁ tīkṣṇa-daṁṣṭraṁ mahā-balam॥28॥
[विरूपाक्षम् (virūpākṣam) - misshapen-eyed; महा-वक्त्रम् (mahā-vaktram) - with large mouth; शङ्कु-कर्णम् (śaṅku-karṇam) - conical-eared; विभीषणम् (vibhīṣaṇam) - terrifying; भीम-रूपम् (bhīma-rūpam) - fearsome form; सुताम्र-ओष्ठम् (su-tāmra-oṣṭham) - with red lips; तीक्ष्ण-दंष्ट्रम् (tīkṣṇa-daṁṣṭram) - sharp-fanged; महा-बलम् (mahā-balam) - greatly powerful;]
Misshapen-eyed, large-mouthed, conical-eared, terrifying, fearsome in form, with red lips and sharp fangs — he was immensely strong.
महेष्वासं महावीर्यं महासत्त्वं महाभुजम् । महाजवं महाकायं महामायमरिंदमम् ॥२९॥
maheṣvāsaṁ mahā-vīryaṁ mahā-sattvaṁ mahā-bhujam। mahā-javaṁ mahā-kāyaṁ mahā-māyam arindamam॥29॥
[मह-इष्वासम् (maheṣvāsam) - great archer; महा-वीर्यम् (mahā-vīryam) - of great energy; महा-सत्त्वम् (mahā-sattvam) - of great spirit; महा-भुजम् (mahā-bhujam) - with mighty arms; महा-जवम् (mahā-javam) - of great speed; महा-कायम् (mahā-kāyam) - with huge body; महा-मायम् (mahā-māyam) - master of great illusion; अरि-न्दमम् (ari-ndamam) - subduer of foes;]
He was a great archer, possessed of immense energy, spirit, mighty arms, speed, a vast body, great illusion, and a subduer of enemies.
अमानुषं मानुषजं भीमवेगं महाबलम् । यः पिशाचानतीवान्यान्बभूवाति स मानुषान् ॥३०॥
amānuṣaṁ mānuṣajaṁ bhīma-vegaṁ mahā-balam। yaḥ piśācān atīv ānyān babhūva ati sa mānuṣān॥30॥
[अमानुषम् (amānuṣam) - superhuman; मानुषजम् (mānuṣajam) - born of humans; भीम-वेमम् (bhīma-vegam) - of Bhīma-like speed; महा-बलम् (mahā-balam) - great strength; यः (yaḥ) - who; पिशाचान् (piśācān) - demons; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; अन्यान् (anyān) - others; बभूव (babhūva) - became; अतिस (ati sa) - surpassed; मानुषान् (mānuṣān) - men;]
Superhuman yet human-born, of Bhīma-like speed and immense strength, he surpassed even demons and other men.
बालोऽपि यौवनं प्राप्तो मानुषेषु विशां पते । सर्वास्त्रेषु परं वीरः प्रकर्षमगमद्बली ॥३१॥
bālo'pi yauvanaṁ prāpto mānuṣeṣu viśāṁ pate। sarvāstreṣu paraṁ vīraḥ prakarṣam agamad balī॥31॥
[बालः अपि (bālaḥ api) - though a child; यौवनं (yauvanam) - youth; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; मानुषेषु (mānuṣeṣu) - among men; विशां पते (viśāṁ pate) - O lord of men; सर्व-अस्त्रेषु (sarva-astreṣu) - in all weapons; परम् (param) - supreme; वीरः (vīraḥ) - warrior; प्रकर्षम् (prakarṣam) - excellence; अगमत् (agamat) - reached; बली (balī) - the mighty one;]
Though a child, he attained youth among men, O lord of men, and as a mighty warrior, he reached excellence in all weapons.
सद्यो हि गर्भं राक्षस्यो लभन्ते प्रसवन्ति च । कामरूपधराश्चैव भवन्ति बहुरूपिणः ॥३२॥
sadyo hi garbhaṁ rākṣasyo labhante prasavanti ca। kāma-rūpa-dharāś caiva bhavanti bahu-rūpiṇaḥ॥32॥
[सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; हि (hi) - indeed; गर्भं (garbhaṁ) - conception; राक्षस्यः (rākṣasyaḥ) - demonesses; लभन्ते (labhante) - obtain; प्रसवन्ति (prasavanti) - give birth; च (ca) - and; कामरूपधराः (kāma-rūpa-dharāḥ) - form-assuming at will; च एव (ca eva) - and indeed; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; बहु-रूपिणः (bahu-rūpiṇaḥ) - many-formed beings;]
Demonesses conceive and give birth instantly, and they take on forms at will, becoming beings of many shapes.
प्रणम्य विकचः पादावगृह्णात्स पितुस्तदा । मातुश्च परमेष्वासस्तौ च नामास्य चक्रतुः ॥३३॥
praṇamya vikacaḥ pādāv agṛhṇāt sa pitus tadā। mātuś ca parameṣv-āsas tau ca nāmāsya cakratuḥ॥33॥
[प्रणम्य (praṇamya) - having bowed; विकचः (vikacaḥ) - the young boy; पादौ (pādau) - the feet; अगृह्णात् (agṛhṇāt) - grasped; सः (saḥ) - he; पितुः (pituḥ) - of his father; तदा (tadā) - then; मातुः च (mātuḥ ca) - and of his mother; परम-इषु-आसः (parama-iṣu-āsaḥ) - supreme archer; तौ (tau) - the two; च (ca) - and; नाम (nāma) - name; अस्य (asya) - of him; चक्रतुः (cakratuḥ) - gave;]
Bowing down, the young boy grasped the feet of his father and mother, the supreme archer. The two then gave him his name.
घटभासोत्कच इति मातरं सोऽभ्यभाषत । अभवत्तेन नामास्य घटोत्कच इति स्म ह ॥३४॥
ghaṭa-bhāsotkaca iti mātaraṁ so'bhyabhāṣata। abhavat tena nāmāsya ghaṭotkaca iti sma ha॥34॥
[घट-भास-उत्कचः (ghaṭa-bhāsa-utkacaḥ) - one with a bald head shining like a pot; इति (iti) - thus; मातरम् (mātaram) - to his mother; सः (saḥ) - he; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - addressed; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; तेन (tena) - by that; नाम (nāma) - name; अस्य (asya) - of him; घटोत्कचः (ghaṭotkacaḥ) - Ghaṭotkaca; इति (iti) - thus; स्म ह (sma ha) - it is said;]
Seeing his bald head shining like a pot, he was addressed thus by his mother. From that he became known as Ghaṭotkaca, it is said.
अनुरक्तश्च तानासीत्पाण्डवान्स घटोत्कचः । तेषां च दयितो नित्यमात्मभूतो बभूव सः ॥३५॥
anuraktaś ca tān āsīt pāṇḍavāns ghaṭotkacaḥ। teṣāṁ ca dayito nityam ātma-bhūto babhūva saḥ॥35॥
[अनुरक्तः (anuraktaḥ) - devoted; च (ca) - and; तान् (tān) - to them; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; घटोत्कचः (ghaṭotkacaḥ) - Ghaṭotkaca; तेषां (teṣām) - to them; च (ca) - and; दयितः (dayitaḥ) - beloved; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; आत्मभूतः (ātma-bhūtaḥ) - as one of themselves; बभूव (babhūva) - he became; सः (saḥ) - he;]
Ghaṭotkaca was devoted to the Pāṇḍavas and became ever dear to them, as one of their own.
संवाससमयो जीर्ण इत्यभाषत तं ततः । हिडिम्बा समयं कृत्वा स्वां गतिं प्रत्यपद्यत ॥३६॥
saṁvāsa-samayo jīrṇa ity abhāṣata taṁ tataḥ। hiḍimbā samayaṁ kṛtvā svāṁ gatiṁ pratyapadyata॥36॥
[संवास-समयः (saṁvāsa-samayaḥ) - the time of cohabitation; जीर्णः (jīrṇaḥ) - has expired; इति (iti) - thus; अभाषत (abhāṣata) - she said; तम् (tam) - to him; ततः (tataḥ) - then; हिडिम्बा (hiḍimbā) - Hiḍimbā; समयं (samayaṁ) - agreement; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; स्वाम् (svām) - her own; गतिम् (gatim) - course; प्रत्यपद्यत (pratyapadyata) - returned;]
She said to him that the time of union had expired. Hiḍimbā, having fulfilled the agreement, returned to her own path.
कृत्यकाल उपस्थास्ये पितृनिति घटोत्कचः । आमन्त्र्य राक्षसश्रेष्ठः प्रतस्थे चोत्तरां दिशम् ॥३७॥
kṛtya-kāla upasthāsye pitṛn iti ghaṭotkacaḥ। āmantrya rākṣasa-śreṣṭhaḥ pratasthe cottarāṁ diśam॥37॥
[कृत्य-कालः (kṛtya-kālaḥ) - when the time of duty; उपस्थास्ये (upasthāsye) - I will attend; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - to my fathers (elders); इति (iti) - thus; घटोत्कचः (ghaṭotkacaḥ) - Ghaṭotkaca; आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having bid farewell; राक्षस-श्रेष्ठः (rākṣasa-śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best of rākṣasas; प्रतस्थे (pratasthe) - departed; उत्तरां दिशम् (uttarāṁ diśam) - toward the northern direction;]
“When the time comes, I will return to attend to my fathers,” said Ghaṭotkaca. Bidding farewell, the best of rākṣasas departed to the north.
स हि सृष्टो मघवता शक्तिहेतोर्महात्मना । कर्णस्याप्रतिवीर्यस्य विनाशाय महात्मनः ॥३८॥
sa hi sṛṣṭo maghavatā śakti-hetor mahātmanā। karṇasya aprati-vīryasya vināśāya mahātmanaḥ॥38॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; सृष्टः (sṛṣṭaḥ) - was created; मघवता (maghavatā) - by Indra; शक्ति-हेतोः (śakti-hetoḥ) - because of the śakti weapon; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great soul; कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of Karṇa; अप्रति-वीर्यस्य (aprati-vīryasya) - of matchless valor; विनाशाय (vināśāya) - for destruction; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great one;]
He was indeed created by Indra, the great soul, for the purpose of destroying the mighty Karṇa of unmatched valor through the śakti weapon.
