वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

[वैशम्पायनः (vaiśampāyanaḥ) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśampāyana said:
तयोर्दुःखितयोर्वाक्यमतिमात्रं निशम्य तत् । भृशं दुःखपरीताङ्गी कन्या तावभ्यभाषत ॥१॥
tayor duḥkhitayor vākyam atimātraṁ niśamya tat। bhṛśaṁ duḥkhaparītāṅgī kanyā tāv abhyabhāṣata ॥1॥
[तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; दुःखितयोः (duḥkhitayoḥ) - grieving; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अतिमात्रम् (atimātram) - excessive; निशम्य (niśamya) - hearing; तत् (tat) - that; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly; दुःख-परीता-अङ्गी (duḥkha-parītā-aṅgī) - whose body was overcome with sorrow; कन्या (kanyā) - the girl; तौ (tau) - those two; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - addressed;]
Hearing the excessive words of those two grieving ones, the girl, whose body was overcome with great sorrow, addressed them both.
किमिदं भृशदुःखार्तौ रोरवीथो अनाथवत् । ममापि श्रूयतां किञ्चिच्छ्रुत्वा च क्रियतां क्षमम् ॥२॥
kim idaṁ bhṛśaduḥkhārtau roravītho anāthavat। mamāpi śrūyatāṁ kiñcit śrutvā ca kriyatāṁ kṣamam ॥2॥
[किम् (kim) - what; इदम् (idam) - is this; भृश-दुःख-आर्तौ (bhṛśa-duḥkha-ārtau) - both afflicted with intense grief; रोरवीथः (roravīthaḥ) - you cry aloud; अनाथवत् (anāthavat) - like the helpless; मम (mama) - my; अपि (api) - also; श्रूयताम् (śrūyatām) - let it be heard; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - something; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - after hearing; च (ca) - and; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; क्षमम् (kṣamam) - appropriate;]
Why do you cry out so bitterly, as if helpless and afflicted with great grief? Please listen also to me and, having heard, act in a fitting way.
धर्मतोऽहं परित्याज्या युवयोर्नात्र संशयः । त्यक्तव्यां मां परित्यज्य त्रातं सर्वं मयैकया ॥३॥
dharmato'haṁ parityājyā yuvayor nātra saṁśayaḥ। tyaktavyāṁ māṁ parityajya trātaṁ sarvaṁ mayaikayā ॥3॥
[धर्मतः (dharmataḥ) - by righteousness; अहम् (aham) - I; परित्याज्या (parityājyā) - am to be abandoned; युवयोः (yuvayoḥ) - by you both; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt; त्यक्तव्याम् (tyaktavyām) - having forsaken; माम् (mām) - me; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - after abandoning; त्रातम् (trātam) - has been saved; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; मया (mayā) - by me; एकया (ekayā) - alone;]
By righteousness, I am to be abandoned by you both — of this there is no doubt. Abandoning me, all has been saved by me alone.
इत्यर्थमिष्यतेऽपत्यं तारयिष्यति मामिति । तस्मिन्नुपस्थिते काले तरतं प्लववन्मया ॥४॥
ity artham iṣyate'patyaṁ tārayiṣyati mām iti। tasminn upasthite kāle tarataṁ plavavan mayā ॥4॥
[इति (iti) - thus; अर्थम् (artham) - for the purpose; इष्यते (iṣyate) - offspring is desired; अपत्यम् (apatyam) - a child; तारयिष्यति (tārayiṣyati) - will rescue; माम् (mām) - me; इति (iti) - thinking; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - when that; उपस्थिते (upasthite) - moment has come; काले (kāle) - at the time; तरताम् (taratām) - let the crossing be done; प्लववत् (plavavat) - like a boat; मया (mayā) - by me;]
It is for this reason that a child is desired — that he may rescue me. Now that the time has come, let me be the boat for your crossing.
इह वा तारयेद्दुर्गादुत वा प्रेत्य तारयेत् । सर्वथा तारयेत्पुत्रः पुत्र इत्युच्यते बुधैः ॥५॥
iha vā tārayed durgād uta vā pretya tārayet। sarvathā tārayet putraḥ putra ity ucyate budhaiḥ ॥5॥
[इह (iha) - here; वा (vā) - or; तारयेत् (tārayet) - may rescue; दुर्गात् (durgāt) - from danger; उत (uta) - or; वा (vā) - or; प्रेत्य (pretya) - after death; तारयेत् (tārayet) - may rescue; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; तारयेत् (tārayet) - he should rescue; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - a son; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; इति (iti) - thus; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called; बुधैः (budhaiḥ) - by the wise;]
Whether here by rescuing from danger or hereafter after death — in all ways, a rescuer he must be; that is why a son is called 'putra' by the wise.
आकाङ्क्षन्ते च दौहित्रानपि नित्यं पितामहाः । तान्स्वयं वै परित्रास्ये रक्षन्ती जीवितं पितुः ॥६॥
ākāṅkṣante ca dauhitrān api nityaṁ pitāmahāḥ। tān svayaṁ vai paritrā sye rakṣantī jīvitaṁ pituḥ ॥6॥
[आकाङ्क्षन्ते (ākāṅkṣante) - they desire; च (ca) - and; दौहित्रान् (dauhitrān) - grandsons (daughter’s sons); अपि (api) - even; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; पितामहाः (pitāmahāḥ) - grandfathers; तान् (tān) - them; स्वयम् (svayam) - myself; वै (vai) - indeed; परित्रास्ये (paritrā sye) - I shall protect; रक्षन्ती (rakṣantī) - protecting; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life; पितुः (pituḥ) - of my father;]
Grandfathers always desire even their daughter’s sons — I shall myself protect them, preserving the life of my father.
भ्राता च मम बालोऽयं गते लोकममुं त्वयि । अचिरेणैव कालेन विनश्येत न संशयः ॥७॥
bhrātā ca mama bālo'yaṁ gate lokam amuṁ tvayi। acireṇaiva kālena vinaśyeta na saṁśayaḥ ॥7॥
[भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - my; बालः (bālaḥ) - young; अयम् (ayam) - this; गते (gate) - gone; लोकम् (lokam) - to the world; अमुम् (amum) - that (afterworld); त्वयि (tvayi) - when you; अचिरेण (acireṇa) - soon; एव (eva) - indeed; कालेन (kālena) - in time; विनश्येत (vinaśyeta) - will perish; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
My young brother here, once you depart to the next world, will soon perish — there is no doubt of it.
तातेऽपि हि गते स्वर्गं विनष्टे च ममानुजे । पिण्डः पितृणां व्युच्छिद्येत्तत्तेषामप्रियं भवेत् ॥८॥
tāte'pi hi gate svargaṁ vinaṣṭe ca mamānuje। piṇḍaḥ pitṝṇāṁ vyucchidyet tat teṣām apriyaṁ bhavet ॥8॥
[ताते (tāte) - when the father; अपि (api) - also; हि (hi) - indeed; गते (gate) - goes; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - to heaven; विनष्टे (vinaṣṭe) - is lost; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - my; अनुजे (anuje) - younger brother; पिण्डः (piṇḍaḥ) - funeral offering; पितॄणाम् (pitṝṇām) - for the ancestors; व्युच्छिद्येत् (vyucchidyet) - would be interrupted; तत् (tat) - that; तेषाम् (teṣām) - for them; अप्रियम् (apriyam) - unpleasant; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be;]
If my father goes to heaven and my younger brother is also lost, the funeral offerings to the ancestors would be interrupted — which would be displeasing to them.
पित्रा त्यक्ता तथा मात्रा भ्रात्रा चाहमसंशयम् । दुःखाद्दुःखतरं प्राप्य म्रियेयमतथोचिता ॥९॥
pitrā tyaktā tathā mātrā bhrātrā cāham asaṁśayam। duḥkhād duḥkhataraṁ prāpya mriyeyam atathocitā ॥9॥
[पित्रा (pitrā) - by father; त्यक्ता (tyaktā) - abandoned; तथा (tathā) - likewise; मात्रा (mātrā) - by mother; भ्रात्रा (bhrātrā) - by brother; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; असंशयम् (asaṁśayam) - without doubt; दुःखात् (duḥkhāt) - than sorrow; दुःखतरम् (duḥkhataraṁ) - greater sorrow; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; म्रियेयम् (mriyeyam) - I may die; अतथोचिता (atathocitā) - not deserving such fate;]
Abandoned by father, mother, and brother — without doubt, I would attain a sorrow greater than sorrow itself, and die undeservedly.
त्वयि त्वरोगे निर्मुक्ते माता भ्राता च मे शिशुः । सन्तानश्चैव पिण्डश्च प्रतिष्ठास्यत्यसंशयम् ॥१०॥
tvayi tvaroge nirmukte mātā bhrātā ca me śiśuḥ। santānaś caiva piṇḍaś ca pratiṣṭhāsyaty asaṁśayam ॥10॥
[त्वयि (tvayi) - when you; त्व-arोगे (tvaroge) - free from disease; निर्मुक्ते (nirmukte) - released; माता (mātā) - mother; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; शिशुः (śiśuḥ) - infant; सन्तानः (santānaḥ) - lineage; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पिण्डः (piṇḍaḥ) - offering to ancestors; च (ca) - and; प्रतिष्ठास्यति (pratiṣṭhāsyati) - will be established; असंशयम् (asaṁśayam) - without doubt;]
If you are freed from this illness, then my mother, my infant brother, the lineage, and the funeral offerings — all will be surely preserved.
आत्मा पुत्रः सखा भार्या कृच्छ्रं तु दुहिता किल । स कृच्छ्रान्मोचयात्मानं मां च धर्मेण योजय ॥११॥
ātmā putraḥ sakhā bhāryā kṛcchraṁ tu duhitā kila। sa kṛcchrān mocayātmānaṁ māṁ ca dharmeṇa yojaya ॥11॥
[आत्मा (ātmā) - the self; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; सखा (sakhā) - friend; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; कृच्छ्रं (kṛcchram) - hardship; तु (tu) - but; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; किल (kila) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; कृच्छ्रात् (kṛcchrāt) - from hardship; मोचय (mocaya) - release; आत्मानं (ātmānam) - yourself; माम् (mām) - me; च (ca) - and; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - through righteousness; योजय (yojaya) - join;]
The self is a son, a friend, a wife; but the daughter is indeed a hardship. So release yourself from hardship and unite me with righteousness.
अनाथा कृपणा बाला यत्रक्वचनगामिनी । भविष्यामि त्वया तात विहीना कृपणा बत ॥१२॥
anāthā kṛpaṇā bālā yatrakvacana-gāminī। bhaviṣyāmi tvayā tāta vihīnā kṛpaṇā bata ॥12॥
[अनाथा (anāthā) - helpless; कृपणा (kṛpaṇā) - pitiable; बाला (bālā) - girl; यत्रक्वचनगामिनी (yatrakvacanagāminī) - wandering anywhere; भविष्यामि (bhaviṣyāmi) - I shall become; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; तात (tāta) - father; विहीना (vihīnā) - deprived; कृपणा (kṛpaṇā) - wretched; बत (bata) - alas;]
I shall become a helpless, pitiable girl, wandering anywhere — alas, father, I shall be wretched, deprived of you.
अथवाहं करिष्यामि कुलस्यास्य विमोक्षणम् । फलसंस्था भविष्यामि कृत्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम् ॥१३॥
athavāhaṁ kariṣyāmi kulasyāsya vimokṣaṇam। phalasaṁsthā bhaviṣyāmi kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram ॥13॥
[अथवा (athavā) - or; अहम् (aham) - I; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - shall do; कुलस्य (kulasya) - of the lineage; अस्य (asya) - this; विमोक्षणम् (vimokṣaṇam) - deliverance; फलसंस्था (phalasaṁsthā) - fruit-bearing end; भविष्यामि (bhaviṣyāmi) - I shall become; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; कर्म (karma) - deed; सुदुष्करम् (suduṣkaram) - very difficult;]
Or else I shall liberate this lineage and become the fruit-bearing end, having performed a most difficult deed.
अथवा यास्यसे तत्र त्यक्त्वा मां द्विजसत्तम । पीडिताहं भविष्यामि तदवेक्षस्व मामपि ॥१४॥
athavā yāsyase tatra tyaktvā māṁ dvijasattama। pīḍitāhaṁ bhaviṣyāmi tad avekṣasva mām api ॥14॥
[अथवा (athavā) - or; यास्यसे (yāsyase) - you will go; तत्र (tatra) - there; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - abandoning; माम् (mām) - me; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of Brahmins; पीडिता (pīḍitā) - afflicted; अहम् (aham) - I; भविष्यामि (bhaviṣyāmi) - shall become; तत् (tat) - that; अवेक्षस्व (avekṣasva) - consider; माम् (mām) - me; अपि (api) - also;]
Or if you go there, abandoning me, O best of Brahmins, I will be afflicted — consider me as well.
तदस्मदर्थं धर्मार्थं प्रसवार्थं च सत्तम । आत्मानं परिरक्षस्व त्यक्तव्यां मां च सन्त्यज ॥१५॥
tad asmadarthaṁ dharmārthaṁ prasavārthaṁ ca sattama। ātmānaṁ parirakṣasva tyaktavyāṁ māṁ ca santyaja ॥15॥
[तत् (tat) - therefore; अस्मदर्थम् (asmadartham) - for our sake; धर्मार्थम् (dharmārtham) - for righteousness; प्रसव-अर्थम् (prasavārtham) - for progeny; च (ca) - and; सत्तम (sattama) - O noble one; आत्मानं (ātmānam) - yourself; परिरक्षस्व (parirakṣasva) - protect; त्यक्तव्याम् (tyaktavyām) - one who must be forsaken; माम् (mām) - me; च (ca) - and; सन्त्यज (santyaja) - abandon;]
Therefore, O noble one, for our sake, for righteousness and for progeny, protect yourself — abandon me, who must be forsaken.
अवश्यकरणीयेऽर्थे मा त्वां कालोऽत्यगादयम् । त्वया दत्तेन तोयेन भविष्यति हितं च मे ॥१६॥
avaśyakaraṇīye'rthe mā tvāṁ kālo'tyagād ayam। tvayā dattena toyena bhaviṣyati hitaṁ ca me ॥16॥
[अवश्य-करणीये (avaśya-karaṇīye) - in that which must be done; अर्थे (arthe) - in the matter; मा (mā) - may not; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; अत्यगात् (atyagāt) - pass beyond; अयम् (ayam) - this; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; दत्तेन (dattena) - given; तोयेन (toyena) - with water (libation); भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - it will become; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - for me;]
May time not pass beyond you in what must certainly be done — by the water you offer, benefit will come to me as well.
किं न्वतः परमं दुःखं यद्वयं स्वर्गते त्वयि । याचमानाः परादन्नं परिधावेमहि श्ववत् ॥१७॥
kiṁ nv ataḥ paramaṁ duḥkhaṁ yad vayaṁ svargate tvayi। yācamānāḥ parād annaṁ paridhāvema hi śvavat ॥17॥
[किम् (kim) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; अतः (ataḥ) - than this; परम् (param) - greater; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; यत् (yat) - that; वयम् (vayam) - we; स्वर्गगते (svargagate) - when gone to heaven; त्वयि (tvayi) - you; याचमानाः (yācamānāḥ) - begging; परात् (parāt) - from others; अन्नम् (annam) - food; परिधावेमहि (paridhāvema hi) - would run about; श्ववत् (śvavat) - like dogs;]
What greater sorrow than this — that when you have gone to heaven, we would beg for food from others, running about like dogs?
त्वयि त्वरोगे निर्मुक्ते क्लेशादस्मात्सबान्धवे । अमृते वसती लोके भविष्यामि सुखान्विता ॥१८॥
tvayi tvaroge nirmukte kleśād asmāt sabāndhave। amṛte vasatī loke bhaviṣyāmi sukhānvitā ॥18॥
[त्वयि (tvayi) - when you; त्व-रोगे (tva-roge) - from disease; निर्मुक्ते (nirmukte) - freed; क्लेशात् (kleśāt) - from suffering; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this; स-बान्धवे (sa-bāndhave) - with relatives; अमृते (amṛte) - in immortality; वसती (vasatī) - dwelling; लोके (loke) - in the world; भविष्यामि (bhaviṣyāmi) - I shall become; सुख-अन्विता (sukha-anvitā) - endowed with happiness;]
If you are freed from disease, I shall live happily with our relatives, in this world as though in immortality, freed from this suffering.
एवं बहुविधं तस्या निशम्य परिदेवितम् । पिता माता च सा चैव कन्या प्ररुरुदुस्त्रयः ॥१९॥
evaṁ bahuvidhaṁ tasyā niśamya paridevitam। pitā mātā ca sā caiva kanyā prarurudus trayaḥ ॥19॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; बहु-विधम् (bahu-vidham) - various kinds; तस्या (tasyāḥ) - her; निशम्य (niśamya) - hearing; परिदेवितम् (paridevitam) - lamentation; पिता (pitā) - the father; माता (mātā) - the mother; च (ca) - and; सा (sā) - she; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कन्या (kanyā) - the girl; प्ररुरुदुः (praruruduḥ) - wept; त्रयः (trayaḥ) - all three;]
Thus, hearing her many forms of lamentation, the father, mother, and the girl herself — all three wept together.
ततः प्ररुदितान्सर्वान्निशम्याथ सुतस्तयोः । उत्फुल्लनयनो बालः कलमव्यक्तमब्रवीत् ॥२०॥
tataḥ praruditān sarvān niśamyātha sutas tayoḥ। utphullanayano bālaḥ kalam avyaktam abravīt ॥20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्ररुदितान् (praruditān) - weeping; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; निशम्य (niśamya) - hearing; अथ (atha) - then; सुतः (sutaḥ) - the son; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of the two; उत्फुल्ल-नयनः (utphulla-nayanaḥ) - with bright eyes; बालः (bālaḥ) - the boy; कलम् (kalam) - indistinctly; अव्यक्तम् (avyaktam) - inarticulately; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
Then, hearing all of them weeping, the son of the two, a young boy with bright eyes, spoke indistinctly and inarticulately.
मा रोदीस्तात मा मातर्मा स्वसस्त्वमिति ब्रुवन् । प्रहसन्निव सर्वांस्तानेकैकं सोऽपसर्पति ॥२१॥
mā rodīs tāta mā mātar mā svasas tvam iti bruvan। prahasann iva sarvāṁs tān ekaikaṁ so'pasarpati ॥21॥
[मा (mā) - do not; रोदीः (rodīḥ) - cry; तात (tāta) - father; मा (mā) - do not; मातः (mātaḥ) - mother; मा (mā) - do not; स्वसः (svasah) - sister; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इति (iti) - thus; ब्रुवन् (bruvan) - speaking; प्रहसन् (prahasan) - smiling; इव (iva) - as if; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all (of them); तान् (tān) - them; एकैकम् (ekaikam) - one by one; सः (saḥ) - he; अपसर्पति (apasarpati) - moves toward;]
“Do not cry, father; do not, mother; you too, sister” — speaking thus and smiling as if playfully, he approached them one by one.
ततः स तृणमादाय प्रहृष्टः पुनरब्रवीत् । अनेन तं हनिष्यामि राक्षसं पुरुषादकम् ॥२२॥
tataḥ sa tṛṇam ādāya prahṛṣṭaḥ punar abravīt। anena taṁ haniṣyāmi rākṣasaṁ puruṣādakam ॥22॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; तृणम् (tṛṇam) - a blade of grass; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; प्रहृष्टः (prahṛṣṭaḥ) - delighted; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; अनेन (anena) - with this; तम् (tam) - him; हनिष्यामि (haniṣyāmi) - I will kill; राक्षसम् (rākṣasam) - the demon; पुरुषादकम् (puruṣādakam) - man-eater;]
Then, taking a blade of grass and gleefully saying again, “With this I shall slay the demon, the man-eater.”
तथापि तेषां दुःखेन परीतानां निशम्य तत् । बालस्य वाक्यमव्यक्तं हर्षः समभवन्महान् ॥२३॥
tathāpi teṣāṁ duḥkhena parītānāṁ niśamya tat। bālasya vākyam avyaktaṁ harṣaḥ samabhavan mahān ॥23॥
[तथापि (tathāpi) - even so; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; दुःखेन (duḥkhena) - with sorrow; परीतानाम् (parītānām) - overwhelmed; निशम्य (niśamya) - hearing; तत् (tat) - that; बालस्य (bālasya) - of the boy; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अव्यक्तम् (avyaktam) - indistinct; हर्षः (harṣaḥ) - joy; समभवत् (samabhavat) - arose; महान् (mahān) - great;]
Even so, hearing the indistinct words of the boy while they were overwhelmed by grief, great joy arose in them.
अयं काल इति ज्ञात्वा कुन्ती समुपसृत्य तान् । गतासूनमृतेनेव जीवयन्तीदमब्रवीत् ॥२४॥
ayaṁ kāla iti jñātvā kuntī samupasṛtya tān। gatāsūn amṛteneva jīvayantīdam abravīt ॥24॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; कालः (kālaḥ) - is the time; इति (iti) - thus; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - knowing; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; समुपसृत्य (samupasṛtya) - approaching; तान् (tān) - them; गतासून् (gatāsūn) - lifeless; अमृतेन (amṛtena) - with nectar; इव (iva) - as if; जीवयन्ती (jīvayantī) - reviving; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
Knowing that this was the time, Kuntī approached them and, as though reviving the lifeless with nectar, spoke these words.

ॐ असतो मा सद्गमय। तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय। मृत्योर्माऽमृतं गमय। ॐ शान्ति: शान्ति: शान्ति: ॥ - बृहदारण्यकोपनिषद् 1.3.28
"Ōm! Lead me from the unreal to the real, from darkness to light, and from death to immortality. Let there be peace, peace, and peace. Ōm!" - Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 1.3.28
