वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśampāyana said:
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु कौन्तेयाः शल्यविद्धा इवाभवन् । सर्वे चास्वस्थमनसो बभूवुस्ते महारथाः ॥१-१५६-१॥
etacchrutvā tu kaunteyāḥ śalyaviddhā ivābhavan । sarve cāsvasthamanaso babhūvuste mahārathāḥ ॥1-156-1॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तु (tu) - but; कौन्तेयाः (kaunteyāḥ) - sons of Kunti; शल्यविद्धाः (śalyaviddhāḥ) - pierced by arrows; इव (iva) - as if; अभवन् (abhavan) - became; सर्वे (sarve) - all; च (ca) - and; अस्वस्थमनसः (asvasthamanasaḥ) - disturbed in mind; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; ते (te) - they; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great warriors;]
Having heard this, the sons of Kunti became as if pierced by arrows. All those great warriors became disturbed in mind.
ततः कुन्ती सुतान्दृष्ट्वा विभ्रान्तान्गतचेतसः । युधिष्ठिरमुवाचेदं वचनं सत्यवादिनी ॥१-१५६-२॥
tataḥ kuntī sutāndṛṣṭvā vibhrāntāngatacētasaḥ । yudhiṣṭhiramuvācēdaṃ vacanaṃ satyavādinī ॥1-156-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kunti; सुतान् (sutān) - sons; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; विभ्रान्तान् (vibhrāntān) - bewildered; गतचेतसः (gatacētasaḥ) - unconscious; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; उवाच (uvāca) - said; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनं (vacanaṃ) - words; सत्यवादिनी (satyavādinī) - truthful;]
Then Kunti, having seen her sons bewildered and unconscious, said these truthful words to Yudhishthira.
चिररात्रोषिताः स्मेह ब्राह्मणस्य निवेशने । रममाणाः पुरे रम्ये लब्धभैक्षा युधिष्ठिर ॥१-१५६-३॥
cirarātroṣitāḥ s meha brāhmaṇasya niveśane । ramamāṇāḥ pure ramye labdhabhaikṣā yudhiṣṭhira ॥1-156-3॥
[चिररात्रोषिताः (cirarātroṣitāḥ) - having stayed for a long time; स्मेह (s meha) - here; ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of the Brahmin; निवेशने (niveśane) - in the house; रममाणाः (ramamāṇāḥ) - enjoying; पुरे (pure) - in the city; रम्ये (ramye) - beautiful; लब्धभैक्षा (labdhabhaikṣā) - having obtained alms; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhishthira;]
Having stayed for a long time here in the Brahmin's house, enjoying in the beautiful city, having obtained alms, Yudhishthira.
यानीह रमणीयानि वनान्युपवनानि च । सर्वाणि तानि दृष्टानि पुनः पुनररिंदम ॥१-१५६-४॥
yānīha ramaṇīyāni vanānyupavanāni ca । sarvāṇi tāni dṛṣṭāni punaḥ punarariṃdama ॥1-156-4॥
[यानीह (yānīha) - which here; रमणीयानि (ramaṇīyāni) - beautiful; वनानि (vanāni) - forests; उपवनानि (upavanāni) - gardens; च (ca) - and; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; तानि (tāni) - those; दृष्टानि (dṛṣṭāni) - seen; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of enemies;]
O subduer of enemies, all those beautiful forests and gardens here have been seen again and again.
पुनर्दृष्टानि तान्येव प्रीणयन्ति न नस्तथा । भैक्षं च न तथा वीर लभ्यते कुरुनन्दन ॥१-१५६-५॥
punardṛṣṭāni tānyeva prīṇayanti na nastathā । bhaikṣaṃ ca na tathā vīra labhyate kurunandana ॥1-156-5॥
[पुनः (punaḥ) - again; दृष्टानि (dṛṣṭāni) - seen; तानि (tāni) - those; एव (eva) - only; प्रीणयन्ति (prīṇayanti) - please; न (na) - not; नः (naḥ) - us; तथा (tathā) - so; भैक्षं (bhaikṣaṃ) - alms; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - so; वीर (vīra) - hero; लभ्यते (labhyate) - is obtained; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kurus;]
Those same things seen again do not please us so. Nor, O hero, is alms thus obtained, O joy of the Kurus.
ते वयं साधु पाञ्चालान्गच्छाम यदि मन्यसे । अपूर्वदर्शनं तात रमणीयं भविष्यति ॥१-१५६-६॥
te vayaṃ sādhu pāñcālāngacchāma yadi manyase । apūrvadarśanaṃ tāta ramaṇīyaṃ bhaviṣyati ॥1-156-6॥
[ते (te) - they; वयं (vayaṃ) - we; साधु (sādhu) - good; पाञ्चालान् (pāñcālān) - Panchalas; गच्छाम (gacchāma) - go; यदि (yadi) - if; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think; अपूर्वदर्शनं (apūrvadarśanaṃ) - unprecedented sight; तात (tāta) - dear; रमणीयं (ramaṇīyaṃ) - pleasant; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
They, we, shall go to the Panchalas if you think it is good. Dear, it will be an unprecedented and pleasant sight.
सुभिक्षाश्चैव पाञ्चालाः श्रूयन्ते शत्रुकर्शन । यज्ञसेनश्च राजासौ ब्रह्मण्य इति शुश्रुमः ॥१-१५६-७॥
subhikṣāścaiva pāñcālāḥ śrūyante śatrukarśana । yajñasenaśca rājāsau brahmaṇya iti śuśrumaḥ ॥1-156-7॥
[सुभिक्षाः (subhikṣāḥ) - abundance; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पाञ्चालाः (pāñcālāḥ) - Panchalas; श्रूयन्ते (śrūyante) - are heard; शत्रुकर्शन (śatrukarśana) - O enemy-scorcher; । (।) - यज्ञसेनः (yajñasenaḥ) - Yajnasena; च (ca) - and; राजा (rājā) - king; असौ (asau) - that; ब्रह्मण्य (brahmaṇya) - devoted to Brahman; इति (iti) - thus; शुश्रुमः (śuśrumaḥ) - we have heard;]
"Abundance and indeed the Panchalas are heard, O enemy-scorcher. Yajnasena, that king, is devoted to Brahman, thus we have heard."
एकत्र चिरवासो हि क्षमो न च मतो मम । ते तत्र साधु गच्छामो यदि त्वं पुत्र मन्यसे ॥१-१५६-८॥
ekatra ciravāso hi kṣamo na ca mato mama । te tatra sādhu gacchāmo yadi tvaṃ putra manyase ॥1-156-8॥
[एकत्र (ekatra) - together; चिरवासः (ciravāsaḥ) - long stay; हि (hi) - indeed; क्षमः (kṣamaḥ) - suitable; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मतः (mataḥ) - opinion; मम (mama) - my; ते (te) - you; तत्र (tatra) - there; साधु (sādhu) - well; गच्छामः (gacchāmaḥ) - let us go; यदि (yadi) - if; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; पुत्र (putra) - son; मन्यसे (manyase) - think;]
"A long stay together is indeed not suitable nor is it my opinion. Let us go there well, if you think so, my son."
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca॥
[युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhishthira; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Yudhishthira said.
भवत्या यन्मतं कार्यं तदस्माकं परं हितम् । अनुजांस्तु न जानामि गच्छेयुर्नेति वा पुनः ॥१-१५६-९॥
bhavatyā yanmataṃ kāryaṃ tadasmākaṃ paraṃ hitam । anujāṃstu na jānāmi gaccheyurneti vā punaḥ ॥1-156-9॥
[भवत्या (bhavatyā) - by you; यन्मतं (yanmataṃ) - what opinion; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - action; तदस्माकं (tadasmākaṃ) - that our; परं (paraṃ) - supreme; हितम् (hitam) - benefit; अनुजांस्तु (anujāṃstu) - younger ones; न (na) - not; जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; गच्छेयुः (gaccheyuḥ) - they may go; नेति (neti) - not; वा (vā) - or; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
"What you consider as the action, that is our supreme benefit. As for the younger ones, I do not know whether they may go or not again."

Vaiśampāyana said:
ततः कुन्ती भीमसेनमर्जुनं यमजौ तथा । उवाच गमनं ते च तथेत्येवाब्रुवंस्तदा ॥१-१५६-१०॥
tataḥ kuntī bhīmasenamarjunaṃ yamajau tathā । uvāca gamanaṃ te ca tathetyevābruvaṃstadā ॥1-156-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kunti; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - Bhimasena; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; यमजौ (yamajau) - the twin sons of Yama; तथा (tathā) - also; उवाच (uvāca) - said; गमनम् (gamanaṃ) - departure; ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; तथेत्येव (tathetyeva) - so indeed; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said; तदा (tadā) - then;]
Then Kunti said to Bhimasena, Arjuna, and the twin sons of Yama about the departure, and they indeed said so at that time.
तत आमन्त्र्य तं विप्रं कुन्ती राजन्सुतैः सह । प्रतस्थे नगरीं रम्यां द्रुपदस्य महात्मनः ॥१-१५६-११॥
tata āmantrya taṃ vipraṃ kuntī rājansutaiḥ saha । pratasthe nagarīṃ ramyāṃ drupadasya mahātmanaḥ ॥1-156-11॥
[तत (tata) - then; आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having addressed; तं (taṃ) - that; विप्रं (vipraṃ) - brahmin; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kunti; राजन्सुतैः (rājansutaiḥ) - with the sons of the king; सह (saha) - together; प्रतस्थे (pratasthe) - set out; नगरीं (nagarīṃ) - to the city; रम्यां (ramyāṃ) - beautiful; द्रुपदस्य (drupadasya) - of Drupada; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - the great soul;]
Then, having addressed that brahmin, Kunti, together with the sons of the king, set out to the beautiful city of Drupada, the great soul.
