वसत्सु तेषु प्रच्छन्नं पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु। आजगामाथ तान्द्रष्टुं व्यासः सत्यवतीसुतः ॥१-१५७-१॥
vasatsu teṣu pracchannaṃ pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu। ājagāmātha tāndraṣṭuṃ vyāsaḥ satyavatīsutaḥ ॥1-157-1॥
[वसत्सु (vasatsu) - while dwelling; तेषु (teṣu) - among them; प्रच्छन्नं (pracchannam) - hidden; पाण्डवेषु (pāṇḍaveṣu) - among the Pāṇḍavas; महात्मसु (mahātmasu) - great-souled; आजगाम (ājagāma) - came; अथ (atha) - then; तान् (tān) - them; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; सत्यवतीसुतः (satyavatīsutaḥ) - son of Satyavatī;]
(While they were dwelling hidden among the great-souled Pāṇḍavas, then Vyāsa, the son of Satyavatī, came to see them.)
While the great-souled Pāṇḍavas were living in concealment, Vyāsa, the son of Satyavatī, came to visit them.
तमागतमभिप्रेक्ष्य प्रत्युद्गम्य परन्तपाः। प्रणिपत्याभिवाद्यैनं तस्थुः प्राञ्जलयस्तदा ॥१-१५७-२॥
tamāgatam abhiprekṣya pratyudgamya parantapāḥ। praṇipatya abhivādya enaṃ tasthuḥ prāñjalayaḥ tadā ॥1-157-2॥

When they saw him arrive, the destroyers of foes went forth to meet him, bowed down, saluted him, and then stood with joined palms.
समनुज्ञाप्य तान्सर्वानासीनान्मुनिरब्रवीत्। प्रसन्नः पूजितः पार्थैः प्रीतिपूर्वमिदं वचः ॥१-१५७-३॥
samanujñāpya tānsarvān āsīnān munir abravīt। prasannaḥ pūjitaḥ pārthaiḥ prītipūrvam idaṃ vacaḥ ॥1-157-3॥
[समनुज्ञाप्य (samanujñāpya) - having permitted; तान् (tān) - them; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; आसीनान् (āsīnān) - seated; मुनिः (muniḥ) - the sage; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; प्रसन्नः (prasannaḥ) - gracious; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - honored; पार्थैः (pārthaiḥ) - by the Pārthas; प्रीतिपूर्वम् (prītipūrvam) - with affection; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech;]
(Having permitted all of them who were seated, the sage, gracious and honored by the Pārthas, spoke this speech with affection.)
After permitting all those who were seated, the sage, gracious and honored by the Pārthas, affectionately spoke these words.
अपि धर्मेण वर्तध्वं शास्त्रेण च परन्तपाः। अपि विप्रेषु वः पूजा पूजार्हेषु न हीयते ॥१-१५७-४॥
api dharmeṇa vartadhvaṃ śāstreṇa ca parantapāḥ। api vipreṣu vaḥ pūjā pūjārheṣu na hīyate ॥1-157-4॥
[अपि (api) - indeed; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by dharma; वर्तध्वं (vartadhvaṃ) - conduct yourselves; शास्त्रेण (śāstreṇa) - by śāstra; च (ca) - and; परन्तपाः (parantapāḥ) - O scorcher of foes; अपि (api) - indeed; विप्रेषु (vipreṣu) - towards brāhmaṇas; वः (vaḥ) - your; पूजा (pūjā) - worship; पूजार्हेषु (pūjārheṣu) - towards those worthy of worship; न (na) - not; हीयते (hīyate) - is diminished;]
(Indeed, conduct yourselves by dharma and by śāstra, O scorcher of foes. Indeed, let not your worship towards brāhmaṇas and towards those worthy of worship be diminished.)
O scorcher of foes, always act according to dharma and śāstra. Let your worship of brāhmaṇas and those worthy of worship never be diminished.
अथ धर्मार्थवद्वाक्यमुक्त्वा स भगवानृषिः। विचित्राश्च कथास्तास्ताः पुनरेवेदमब्रवीत् ॥१-१५७-५॥
atha dharmārthavadvākyamuktvā sa bhagavānṛṣiḥ। vicitrāśca kathāstāstāḥ punarevedamabravīt ॥1-157-5॥
[अथ (atha) - then; धर्मार्थवत् (dharmārthavat) - having the nature of righteousness and purpose; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; सः (saḥ) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; विचित्राः (vicitrāḥ) - varied; च (ca) - and; कथाः (kathāḥ) - stories; ताः ताः (tāḥ tāḥ) - those various; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Then, having spoken speech possessing righteousness and purpose, that venerable sage again indeed spoke these various stories.)
Then, after uttering words full of righteousness and purpose, the venerable sage once again narrated these various stories.
आसीत्तपोवने काचिदृषेः कन्या महात्मनः। विलग्नमध्या सुश्रोणी सुभ्रूः सर्वगुणान्विता ॥१-१५७-६॥
āsīttapovane kācidṛṣeḥ kanyā mahātmanaḥ। vilagnamadhyā suśroṇī subhrūḥ sarvaguṇānvitā ॥1-157-6॥
[आसीत् (āsīt) - was; तपोवने (tapovane) - in the forest of austerities; काचित् (kācit) - a certain; ऋषेः (ṛṣeḥ) - of the sage; कन्या (kanyā) - daughter; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; विलग्नमध्या (vilagnamadhyā) - with a slender waist; सुश्रोणी (suśroṇī) - having beautiful hips; सुभ्रूः (subhrūḥ) - with lovely eyebrows; सर्वगुणान्विता (sarvaguṇānvitā) - endowed with all virtues;]
(There was, in the forest of austerities, a certain daughter of the great-souled sage, with a slender waist, beautiful hips, lovely eyebrows, endowed with all virtues.)
In the forest of austerities, there was a certain daughter of the great sage, who had a slender waist, beautiful hips, lovely eyebrows, and was endowed with every virtue.
कर्मभिः स्वकृतैः सा तु दुर्भगा समपद्यत। नाध्यगच्छत्पतिं सा तु कन्या रूपवती सती ॥१-१५७-७॥
karmabhiḥ svakṛtaiḥ sā tu durbhagā samapadyata। nādhyagacchatpatiṃ sā tu kanyā rūpavatī satī ॥1-157-7॥
[कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by actions; by deeds; स्वकृतैः (svakṛtaiḥ) - by her own done; by her own acts; सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - but; दुर्भगा (durbhagā) - unfortunate; ill-fated; समपद्यत (samapadyata) - became; turned into; न (na) - not; अध्यगच्छत् (adhyagacchat) - obtained; found; पतिं (patiṃ) - husband; सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - but; कन्या (kanyā) - maiden; girl; रूपवती (rūpavatī) - beautiful; endowed with form; सती (satī) - virtuous; chaste;]
(By actions, by her own done, she but unfortunate became. Not obtained husband, she but maiden beautiful virtuous.)
But by her own actions, she became unfortunate. Though she was a beautiful and virtuous maiden, she did not obtain a husband.
तपस्तप्तुमथारेभे पत्यर्थमसुखा ततः। तोषयामास तपसा सा किलोग्रेण शङ्करम् ॥१-१५७-८॥
tapastaptum athārebhe patyartham asukhā tataḥ। toṣayāmāsa tapasā sā kilogreṇa śaṅkaram ॥1-157-8॥
[तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; तप्तुम् (taptum) - to perform; अथ (atha) - then; आरेभे (ārebhe) - she undertook; पत्यर्थम् (patyartham) - for the sake of a husband; असुखा (asukhā) - unhappy; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; तोषयामास (toṣayāmāsa) - she pleased; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; सा (sā) - she; किल (kila) - indeed; उग्रेण (ugreṇa) - with severe; शङ्करम् (śaṅkaram) - Śaṅkara (Śiva);]
(Then, to perform austerity, she, unhappy for the sake of a husband, thereafter undertook (it). She indeed pleased Śaṅkara by severe austerity.)
Then, desiring a husband and being unhappy, she undertook austerities. Thereafter, by her severe penance, she indeed pleased Śaṅkara (Śiva).
तस्याः स भगवांस्तुष्टस्तामुवाच तपस्विनीम्। वरं वरय भद्रं ते वरदोऽस्मीति भामिनि ॥१-१५७-९॥
tasyāḥ sa bhagavāṃstuṣṭastāmuvāca tapasvinīm। varaṃ varaya bhadraṃ te varado'smīti bhāmini ॥1-157-9॥
[तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; स (sa) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable one; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - being pleased; ताम् (tām) - her; उवाच (uvāca) - said; तपस्विनीम् (tapasvinīm) - to the ascetic woman; वरं (varaṃ) - a boon; वरय (varaya) - choose; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - good fortune; ते (te) - to you; वरदः (varadaḥ) - grantor of boons; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O beautiful lady;]
(Of her, he, the venerable one, being pleased, said to her, the ascetic woman: "Choose a boon; good fortune to you; I am the grantor of boons," thus, O beautiful lady.)
Pleased with her, the venerable one said to the ascetic woman: "Choose a boon; good fortune to you; I am the grantor of boons," O beautiful lady.
अथेश्वरमुवाचेदमात्मनः सा वचो हितम्। पतिं सर्वगुणोपेतमिच्छामीति पुनः पुनः ॥१-१५७-१०॥
atheśvaramuvācedamātmanaḥ sā vaco hitam। patiṃ sarvaguṇopetamicchāmīti punaḥ punaḥ ॥1-157-10॥
[अथ (atha) - then; ईश्वरम् (īśvaram) - lord; उवाच (uvāca) - said; इदम् (idam) - this; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of herself; सा (sā) - she; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; पतिम् (patim) - husband; सर्वगुणोपेतम् (sarvaguṇopetam) - endowed with all virtues; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; इति (iti) - thus; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Then the lord said this speech of herself, beneficial: "I desire a husband endowed with all virtues," again and again.)
Then the lord spoke these beneficial words on her own behalf: "I wish for a husband endowed with all virtues," again and again.
तामथ प्रत्युवाचेदमीशानो वदतां वरः। पञ्च ते पतयो भद्रे भविष्यन्तीति शङ्करः ॥१-१५७-११॥
tām atha pratyuvācedam īśāno vadatāṃ varaḥ। pañca te patayo bhadre bhaviṣyantīti śaṅkaraḥ ॥1-157-11॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; अथ (atha) - then; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; इदम् (idam) - this; ईशानः (īśānaḥ) - the lord; वदताम् (vadatām) - of speakers; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; पञ्च (pañca) - five; ते (te) - to you; पतयः (patayaḥ) - husbands; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will be; इति (iti) - thus; शङ्करः (śaṅkaraḥ) - Śaṅkara (Śiva);]
(Then the lord, the best of speakers, replied this to her: "O auspicious one, you will have five husbands," thus said Śaṅkara.)
Then Śaṅkara, the lord and best among speakers, replied to her, "O blessed one, you will have five husbands."
प्रतिब्रुवन्तीमेकं मे पतिं देहीति शङ्करम्। पुनरेवाब्रवीद्देव इदं वचनमुत्तमम् ॥१-१५७-१२॥
pratibruvantīm ekaṃ me patiṃ dehīti śaṅkaram। punar evābravīd deva idaṃ vacanam uttamam ॥1-157-12॥
[प्रतिब्रुवन्तीम् (pratibruvantīm) - replying; एकं (ekaṃ) - one; मे (me) - to me; पतिम् (patiṃ) - husband; देहि (dehi) - give; इति (iti) - thus; शङ्करम् (śaṅkaram) - Śaṅkara; पुनः (punar) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; देव (deva) - O god; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent;]
(Replying, "Give me Śaṅkara as my one husband," again indeed the god said this excellent speech.)
She replied, "Give me Śaṅkara as my only husband." Again, the god spoke these excellent words.
पञ्चकृत्वस्त्वया उक्तः पतिं देहीत्यहं पुनः। देहमन्यं गतायास्ते यथोक्तं तद्भविष्यति ॥१-१५७-१३॥
pañcakṛtvastvayā uktaḥ patiṃ dehītyahaṃ punaḥ। dehamanyaṃ gatāyāste yathoktaṃ tadbhaviṣyati ॥1-157-13॥
[पञ्चकृत्वः (pañcakṛtvaḥ) - five times; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; पतिम् (patim) - husband; देहि (dehi) - give; इति (iti) - thus; अहम् (aham) - I; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; देहम् (deham) - body; अन्यं (anyaṃ) - another; गतायाः (gatāyāḥ) - to (the one who has) gone; ते (te) - to you; यथोक्तं (yathoktaṃ) - as spoken; तत् (tat) - that; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Five times by you spoken 'Give (me) a husband' thus I (say) again. Another body to (the one who has) gone to you, as spoken, that will be.)
You have said 'Give me a husband' five times; therefore, I say again: for you who will go to another body, as spoken, so it shall be.
द्रुपदस्य कुले जाता कन्या सा देवरूपिणी। निर्दिष्टा भवतां पत्नी कृष्णा पार्षत्यनिन्दिता ॥१-१५७-१४॥
drupadasya kule jātā kanyā sā devarūpiṇī। nirdiṣṭā bhavatāṃ patnī kṛṣṇā pārṣatyaninditā ॥1-157-14॥
[द्रुपदस्य (drupadasya) - of Drupada; कुले (kule) - in the family; जाता (jātā) - born; कन्या (kanyā) - daughter; सा (sā) - she; देवरूपिणी (devarūpiṇī) - divine-formed; निर्दिष्टा (nirdiṣṭā) - appointed; भवतां (bhavatāṃ) - for you (plural); पत्नी (patnī) - wife; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā; पार्षत्यनिन्दिता (pārṣatyaninditā) - faultless daughter of Pārṣata;]
(Born in the family of Drupada, that daughter, she of divine form, is appointed as your wife, Kṛṣṇā, the faultless daughter of Pārṣata.)
Kṛṣṇā, the faultless daughter of Pārṣata, born in the family of Drupada and possessing a divine form, has been appointed as your wife.
पाञ्चालनगरं तस्मात्प्रविशध्वं महाबलाः। सुखिनस्तामनुप्राप्य भविष्यथ न संशयः ॥१-१५७-१५॥
pāñcālanagaraṃ tasmāt praviśadhvaṃ mahābalāḥ। sukhinastām anuprāpya bhaviṣyatha na saṃśayaḥ॥1-157-15॥
[पाञ्चाल (pāñcāla) - of the Pāñcāla (kingdom); नगरम् (nagaraṃ) - city; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from there; प्रविशध्वम् (praviśadhvam) - enter (you all); महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - O mighty ones; सुखिनः (sukhinaḥ) - happy; ताम् (tām) - her (it, the city); अनुप्राप्य (anuprāpya) - having reached; भविष्यथ (bhaviṣyatha) - you will become; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(O mighty ones, from there enter the city of the Pāñcālas; having reached it, you will become happy, there is no doubt.)
O mighty warriors, therefore enter the city of the Pāñcālas; once you reach it, you will surely be happy—there is no doubt about it.
एवमुक्त्वा महाभागः पाण्डवानां पितामहः। पार्थानामन्त्र्य कुन्तीं च प्रातिष्ठत महातपाः ॥१-१५७-१६॥
evam-uktvā mahābhāgaḥ pāṇḍavānāṃ pitāmahaḥ। pārthān-āmantrya kuntīṃ ca prātiṣṭhata mahātapāḥ॥1-157-16॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; महाभागः (mahābhāgaḥ) - O greatly fortunate one; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire; पार्थान् (pārthān) - the sons of Pṛthā (Arjuna and brothers); आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having addressed; कुन्तीम् (kuntīm) - Kuntī; च (ca) - and; प्रातिष्ठत (prātiṣṭhata) - departed; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - the great ascetic;]
(Thus having spoken, the greatly fortunate grandsire of the Pāṇḍavas, having addressed the sons of Pṛthā and Kuntī, departed, the great ascetic.)
Having thus spoken, the illustrious grandsire of the Pāṇḍavas, after addressing the sons of Pṛthā and Kuntī, the great ascetic departed.
