The gandharva said.
अथ तस्यामदृश्यायां नृपतिः काममोहितः। पातनः शत्रुसङ्घानां पपात धरणीतले ॥१-१६१-१॥
atha tasyām adṛśyāyāṃ nṛpatiḥ kāmamohitaḥ। pātanaḥ śatrusaṅghānāṃ papāta dharaṇītale ॥1-161-1॥
[अथ (atha) - then; तस्याम् (tasyām) - in that; अदृश्यायाम् (adṛśyāyām) - invisible; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - king; काममोहितः (kāmamohitaḥ) - deluded by desire; पातनः (pātanaḥ) - destroyer; शत्रुसङ्घानाम् (śatrusaṅghānām) - of the groups of enemies; पपात (papāta) - fell; धरणीतले (dharaṇītale) - on the surface of the earth;]
(Then, in that invisible (state), the king, deluded by desire, the destroyer of the groups of enemies, fell on the surface of the earth.)
Then, in that invisible state, the king—deluded by desire and destroyer of enemy hosts—fell to the ground.
तस्मिन्निपतिते भूमावथ सा चारुहासिनी। पुनः पीनायतश्रोणी दर्शयामास तं नृपम् ॥१-१६१-२॥
tasminnipatite bhūmāvatha sā cāruhāsinī। punaḥ pīnāyataśroṇī darśayāmāsa taṃ nṛpam ॥1-161-2॥

(In that (place), having fallen on the ground, then she with a lovely smile, again, having broad and full hips, showed to him, the king.)
When he had fallen to the ground there, then she of the lovely smile, again, with her broad and full hips, revealed herself to the king.
अथाबभाषे कल्याणी वाचा मधुरया नृपम्। तं कुरूणां कुलकरं कामाभिहतचेतसम् ॥१-१६१-३॥
athābabhāṣe kalyāṇī vācā madhurayā nṛpam। taṃ kurūṇāṃ kulakaraṃ kāmābhihatacetasam ॥1-161-3॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अबभाषे (ababhāṣe) - spoke; कल्याणी (kalyāṇī) - the auspicious one; वाचा (vācā) - with speech; मधुरया (madhurayā) - sweet; नृपम् (nṛpam) - to the king; तं (taṃ) - him; कुरूणां (kurūṇāṃ) - of the Kurus; कुलकरम् (kulakaram) - chief of the family; कामाभिहतचेतसम् (kāmābhihatacetasam) - whose mind was struck by desire;]
(Then the auspicious one spoke to the king with sweet speech, him, the chief of the Kurus, whose mind was struck by desire.)
Then the auspicious lady addressed the king with sweet words, he who was the chief of the Kurus and whose mind was overcome by desire.
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ भद्रं ते न त्वमर्हस्यरिंदम। मोहं नृपतिशार्दूल गन्तुमाविष्कृतः क्षितौ ॥१-१६१-४॥
uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha bhadraṃ te na tvam arhasy ariṃdama। mohaṃ nṛpatiśārdūla gantum āviṣkṛtaḥ kṣitau॥1-161-4॥
[उत्तिष्ठ (uttiṣṭha) - arise; उत्तिष्ठ (uttiṣṭha) - arise; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - auspiciousness; ते (te) - to you; न (na) - not; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अर्हसि (arhasi) - ought; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of foes; मोहं (mohaṃ) - delusion; नृपति-शार्दूल (nṛpati-śārdūla) - O tiger among kings; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; आविष्कृतः (āviṣkṛtaḥ) - manifested; क्षितौ (kṣitau) - on the earth;]
(Arise, arise, auspiciousness to you; you ought not, O subduer of foes, O tiger among kings, to go into delusion manifested on the earth.)
Arise, arise! May auspiciousness be with you. O subduer of foes, O tiger among kings, you should not fall into the delusion that has appeared on earth.
एवमुक्तोऽथ नृपतिर्वाचा मधुरया तदा। ददर्श विपुलश्रोणीं तामेवाभिमुखे स्थिताम् ॥१-१६१-५॥
evam-ukto’tha nṛpatir vācā madhurayā tadā। dadarśa vipula-śroṇīṃ tām eva abhimukhe sthitām ॥1-161-5॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; अथ (atha) - then; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - king; वाचा (vācā) - with speech; मधुरया (madhurayā) - sweet; तदा (tadā) - then; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; विपुलश्रोणीम् (vipula-śroṇīm) - broad-hipped (woman); ताम् (tām) - her; एव (eva) - indeed; अभिमुखे (abhimukhe) - facing; स्थिताम् (sthitām) - standing;]
(Thus addressed, then the king with sweet speech at that time saw her, the broad-hipped one, indeed standing facing (him).)
Thus, when addressed, the king then, with sweet words, saw her—she of broad hips—standing directly before him.
अथ तामसितापाङ्गीमाबभाषे नराधिपः। मन्मथाग्निपरीतात्मा संदिग्धाक्षरया गिरा ॥१-१६१-६॥
atha tām asitāpāṅgīm ābabhāṣe narādhipaḥ। manmathāgni-parītātmā saṃdigdhākṣarayā girā ॥1-161-6॥
[अथ (atha) - then; ताम् (tām) - her; असितापाङ्गीम् (asitāpāṅgīm) - with dark eyes; आबभाषे (ābabhāṣe) - addressed; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - king; मन्मथाग्नि (manmathāgni) - of the fire of desire; परीतात्मा (parītātmā) - whose mind was afflicted; संदिग्धाक्षरया (saṃdigdhākṣarayā) - with faltering words; गिरा (girā) - with speech;]
(Then the king, whose mind was afflicted by the fire of desire, addressed her with dark eyes with faltering words with speech.)
Then the king, his mind troubled by the fire of love, addressed her, the dark-eyed one, with faltering words.
साधु मामसितापाङ्गे कामार्तं मत्तकाशिनि। भजस्व भजमानं मां प्राणा हि प्रजहन्ति माम् ॥१-१६१-७॥
sādhu mām asitāpāṅge kāmārtaṃ matta-kāśini। bhajasva bhajamānaṃ māṃ prāṇā hi prajahanti mām ॥1-161-7॥
[साधु (sādhu) - well; properly; माम् (mām) - me; असितापाङ्गे (asitāpāṅge) - O dark-eyed one; कामार्तम् (kāmārtam) - afflicted by desire; मत्तकाशिनि (matta-kāśini) - O intoxicated and shining one; भजस्व (bhajasva) - accept; भजमानम् (bhajamānam) - accepting; माम् (mām) - me; प्राणाः (prāṇāḥ) - life-breaths; हि (hi) - indeed; प्रजहन्ति (prajahanti) - are abandoning; माम् (mām) - me;]
(Well, me, O dark-eyed one, afflicted by desire, O intoxicated and shining one, accept, accepting me; life-breaths indeed are abandoning me.)
O dark-eyed one, please accept me, who am afflicted by desire, O intoxicated and radiant one; accept me, for my very life-breaths are indeed abandoning me.
त्वदर्थं हि विशालाक्षि मामयं निशितैः शरैः। कामः कमलगर्भाभे प्रतिविध्यन्न शाम्यति ॥१-१६१-८॥
tvadarthaṃ hi viśālākṣi māmayaṃ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ। kāmaḥ kamalagarbhābhe pratividhyanna śāmyati ॥1-161-8॥
[त्वदर्थम् (tvadartham) - for your sake; हि (hi) - indeed; विशालाक्षि (viśālākṣi) - O large-eyed one; माम् (mām) - me; अयम् (ayam) - this; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - with sharp; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - arrows; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; कमलगर्भाभे (kamalagarbhābhe) - O one resembling the inside of a lotus; प्रतिविध्यन् (pratividhyan) - piercing; न (na) - not; शाम्यति (śāmyati) - subsides;]
(For your sake indeed, O large-eyed one, this desire, piercing me with sharp arrows, O one resembling the inside of a lotus, does not subside.)
O large-eyed one, for your sake, this desire, piercing me with sharp arrows, does not subside, O you who resemble the inside of a lotus.
ग्रस्तमेवमनाक्रन्दे भद्रे काममहाहिना। सा त्वं पीनायतश्रोणि पर्याप्नुहि शुभानने ॥१-१६१-९॥
grastamevam-anākrande bhadre kāmamahāhinā। sā tvaṃ pīnāyataśroṇi paryāpnuhi śubhānane ॥1-161-9॥
[ग्रस्तम् (grastam) - seized; एवम् (evam) - thus; अनाक्रन्दे (anākrande) - not crying; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; काममहाहिना (kāmamahāhinā) - by the great serpent of desire; सा (sā) - she; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; पीनायतश्रोणि (pīnāyataśroṇi) - O wide-hipped one; पर्याप्नुहि (paryāpnuhi) - attain; शुभानने (śubhānane) - O beautiful-faced one;]
(Seized thus, not crying, O auspicious one, by the great serpent of desire, she—you, O wide-hipped one—attain, O beautiful-faced one.)
O beautiful-faced one with wide hips, though you are seized thus by the great serpent of desire, do not cry, O auspicious one; you should attain (your goal).
त्वय्यधीना हि मे प्राणाः किंनरोद्गीतभाषिणि। चारुसर्वानवद्याङ्गि पद्मेन्दुसदृशानने ॥१-१६१-१०॥
tvayy adhīnā hi me prāṇāḥ kiṁnarodgīta-bhāṣiṇi। cāru-sarvānavadyāṅgi padmendu-sadṛśānane ॥1-161-10॥
[त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; अधीना (adhīnāḥ) - dependent; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - my; प्राणाः (prāṇāḥ) - life-breaths; किंनर (kiṁnara) - Kinnara (celestial being); उद्गीत (udgīta) - sung; भाषिणि (bhāṣiṇi) - O speaker; चारु (cāru) - beautiful; सर्व (sarva) - all; अनवद्य (anavadya) - faultless; अङ्गि (aṅgi) - O one with limbs; पद्म (padma) - lotus; इन्दु (indu) - moon; सदृश (sadṛśa) - like; आनने (ānane) - in face;]
(In you dependent indeed my life-breaths, O Kinnara-song-speaking one; O beautiful, all-faultless-limbed one, with a face like lotus and moon.)
My very life depends on you, O one whose speech is like the song of Kinnaras; O beautiful, flawless-limbed one, whose face resembles a lotus and the moon.
न ह्यहं त्वदृते भीरु शक्ष्ये जीवितुमात्मना। तस्मात्कुरु विशालाक्षि मय्यनुक्रोशमङ्गने ॥१-१६१-११॥
na hy ahaṃ tvad ṛte bhīru śakṣye jīvitum ātmanā। tasmāt kuru viśālākṣi mayy anukrośam aṅgane ॥1-161-11॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; त्वत् (tvat) - from you; ऋते (ṛte) - without; भीरु (bhīru) - timid one; शक्ष्ये (śakṣye) - am able; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by myself; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; कुरु (kuru) - do; विशालाक्षि (viśālākṣi) - O large-eyed one; मयि (mayi) - towards me; अनुक्रोशम् (anukrośam) - compassion; अङ्गने (aṅgane) - O lady;]
(Not indeed I am able to live by myself without you, O timid one; therefore, O large-eyed one, do compassion towards me, O lady.)
O timid one, truly I cannot live by myself without you; therefore, O large-eyed lady, please show compassion to me.
भक्तं मामसितापाङ्गे न परित्यक्तुमर्हसि। त्वं हि मां प्रीतियोगेन त्रातुमर्हसि भामिनि ॥१-१६१-१२॥
bhaktaṃ māmasitāpāṅge na parityaktumarhasi। tvaṃ hi māṃ prītiyogena trātumarhasi bhāmini ॥1-161-12॥
[भक्तं (bhaktam) - devoted; (one who is) devoted; माम् (mām) - me; असितापाङ्गे (asitāpāṅge) - O dark-eyed one; न (na) - not; परित्यक्तुम् (parityaktum) - to abandon; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; माम् (mām) - me; प्रीतियोगेन (prītiyogena) - with union of affection; त्रातुम् (trātum) - to protect; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O passionate lady;]
((One who is) devoted me, O dark-eyed one, not to abandon you ought. You indeed me with union of affection to protect you ought, O passionate lady.)
O dark-eyed one, you should not abandon me, your devoted one. Indeed, O passionate lady, you ought to protect me with your affection.
गान्धर्वेण च मां भीरु विवाहेनैहि सुन्दरि। विवाहानां हि रम्भोरु गान्धर्वः श्रेष्ठ उच्यते ॥१-१६१-१३॥
gāndharveṇa ca māṃ bhīru vivāhenaihi sundari। vivāhānāṃ hi rambhoru gāndharvaḥ śreṣṭha ucyate ॥1-161-13॥
[गान्धर्वेण (gāndharveṇa) - by the Gandharva (marriage); च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; भीरु (bhīru) - timid one; विवाहेन (vivāhena) - by marriage; एहि (ehi) - come; सुन्दरि (sundari) - O beautiful one; विवाहानाम् (vivāhānām) - of marriages; हि (hi) - indeed; रम्भोरु (rambhoru) - O one with thighs like plantain stems; गान्धर्वः (gāndharvaḥ) - Gandharva (marriage); श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said;]
(By the Gandharva (marriage) and me, timid one, by marriage come, O beautiful one. Of marriages indeed, O one with thighs like plantain stems, Gandharva (marriage) the best is said.)
O beautiful and timid one, come to me through the Gandharva marriage. Of all marriages, O one with thighs like plantain stems, the Gandharva marriage is said to be the best.

नाहमीशात्मनो राजन्कन्या पितृमती ह्यहम्। मयि चेदस्ति ते प्रीतिर्याचस्व पितरं मम ॥१-१६१-१४॥
nāham īśātmano rājan kanyā pitṛmatī hy aham। mayi ced asti te prītir yācasva pitaraṃ mama॥1-161-14॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; ईशात्मनः (īśātmanaḥ) - master of oneself; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कन्या (kanyā) - maiden; पितृमती (pitṛmatī) - having a father; हि (hi) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; मयि (mayi) - in me; चेत् (cet) - if; अस्ति (asti) - there is; ते (te) - your; प्रीति (prīti) - affection; याचस्व (yācasva) - ask; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; मम (mama) - my;]
(Not I, master of oneself, O king, maiden having a father indeed I; in me if there is your affection, ask my father.)
O king, I am not my own master; I am a maiden with a father. If you have affection for me, ask my father.
यथा हि ते मया प्राणाः सङ्गृहीता नरेश्वर। दर्शनादेव भूयस्त्वं तथा प्राणान्ममाहरः ॥१-१६१-१५॥
yathā hi te mayā prāṇāḥ saṅgṛhītā nareśvara। darśanādeva bhūyastvaṃ tathā prāṇānmamāharaḥ ॥1-161-15॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - your; मया (mayā) - by me; प्राणाः (prāṇāḥ) - life-breaths; सङ्गृहीता (saṅgṛhītā) - collected; नरेश्वर (nareśvara) - O lord of men; दर्शनात् (darśanāt) - from seeing; एव (eva) - indeed; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life-breaths; मम (mama) - my; आहरः (āharaḥ) - you have taken;]
(Just as indeed your life-breaths were collected by me, O lord of men, from seeing (me) indeed again, in the same way, you have taken my life-breaths.)
O lord of men, just as I had taken your life-breaths, now by seeing you again, in the same way, you have taken away my life-breaths.
न चाहमीशा देहस्य तस्मान्नृपतिसत्तम। समीपं नोपगच्छामि न स्वतन्त्रा हि योषितः ॥१-१६१-१६॥
na cāham īśā dehasya tasmān nṛpatisattama। samīpaṃ nopagacchāmi na svatantrā hi yoṣitaḥ॥1-161-16॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; ईशा (īśā) - mistress; controller; देहस्य (dehasya) - of the body; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; नृपति-सत्तम (nṛpati-sattama) - O best of kings; समीपम् (samīpam) - near; proximity; न (na) - not; उपगच्छामि (upagacchāmi) - I approach; न (na) - not; स्वतन्त्रा (svatantrā) - independent; हि (hi) - indeed; योषितः (yoṣitaḥ) - women;]
(Not and I mistress of the body therefore, O best of kings, near I do not approach, not independent indeed women.)
O best of kings, I am not the mistress of my own body; therefore, I do not approach near. Women are indeed not independent.
का हि सर्वेषु लोकेषु विश्रुताभिजनं नृपम्। कन्या नाभिलषेन्नाथं भर्तारं भक्तवत्सलम् ॥१-१६१-१७॥
kā hi sarveṣu lokeṣu viśrutābhijanaṃ nṛpam। kanyā nābhilaṣennāthaṃ bhartāraṃ bhaktavatsalam ॥1-161-17॥
[का (kā) - which woman; हि (hi) - indeed; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुत (viśruta) - renowned; आभिजनं (ābhijanam) - of noble birth; नृपम् (nṛpam) - king; कन्या (kanyā) - maiden; न (na) - not; अभिलषेत् (abhilaṣet) - would desire; नाथम् (nātham) - protector; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - husband; भक्तवत्सलम् (bhaktavatsalam) - fond of devotees;]
(Which woman indeed, in all worlds, would not desire a king of renowned noble birth, a protector, a husband, fond of devotees?)
Which maiden, in all the worlds, would not wish for a husband who is a renowned king of noble birth, a protector, and affectionate to his devotees?
तस्मादेवङ्गते काले याचस्व पितरं मम। आदित्यं प्रणिपातेन तपसा नियमेन च ॥१-१६१-१८॥
tasmādevaṅgate kāle yācasva pitaraṃ mama। ādityaṃ praṇipātena tapasā niyamena ca ॥1-161-18॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; from that; एवम्-गते (evam-gate) - thus-having occurred; in this situation; काले (kāle) - at the time; याचस्व (yācasva) - you should request; ask; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; मम (mama) - my; आदित्यम् (ādityam) - the Sun; Aditya; प्रणिपातेन (praṇipātena) - by prostration; with obeisance; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; by penance; नियमेन (niyamena) - by discipline; by observance; च (ca) - and;]
(Therefore, in this situation at the time, you should request my father, and the Sun, by prostration, by austerity, and by discipline.)
Therefore, at such a time, you should ask my father and the Sun with prostration, austerity, and discipline.
स चेत्कामयते दातुं तव मामरिमर्दन। भविष्याम्यथ ते राजन्सततं वशवर्तिनी ॥१-१६१-१९॥
sa cet kāmayate dātuṃ tava mām arimardana। bhaviṣyāmy atha te rājan satataṃ vaśavartinī ॥1-161-19॥
[स (sa) - he; चेत् (cet) - if; कामयते (kāmayate) - desires; दातुम् (dātum) - to give; तव (tava) - to you; माम् (mām) - me; अरिमर्दन (arimardana) - O destroyer of enemies; भविष्यामि (bhaviṣyāmi) - I shall become; अथ (atha) - then; ते (te) - for you; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सततम् (satatam) - always; वशवर्तिनी (vaśavartinī) - obedient;]
(He, if desires to give me to you, O destroyer of enemies, then I shall always be obedient to you, O king.)
If he wishes to give me to you, O destroyer of enemies, then, O king, I shall always remain obedient to you.
अहं हि तपती नाम सावित्र्यवरजा सुता। अस्य लोकप्रदीपस्य सवितुः क्षत्रियर्षभ ॥१-१६१-२०॥
ahaṃ hi tapatī nāma sāvitr-yavarajā sutā। asya lokapradīpasya savituḥ kṣatriyarṣabha ॥1-161-20॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; हि (hi) - indeed; तपती (tapatī) - Tapatī (name); नाम (nāma) - by name; सावित्र्यवरजा (sāvitr-yavarajā) - daughter of Savitṛ; सुता (sutā) - daughter; अस्य (asya) - of this; लोकप्रदीपस्य (lokapradīpasya) - of the illuminator of the world; सवितुः (savituḥ) - of Savitṛ; क्षत्रियर्षभ (kṣatriyarṣabha) - O best of Kṣatriyas;]
(I indeed Tapatī by name, daughter of Savitṛ, daughter; of this illuminator of the world, of Savitṛ, O best of Kṣatriyas.)
O best of Kṣatriyas, I am Tapatī by name, daughter of Savitṛ, the illuminator of this world.
