यैषा ते तपती नाम सावित्र्यवरजा सुता। तां त्वां संवरणस्यार्थे वरयामि विभावसो ॥१-१६३-१॥
yaiṣā te tapatī nāma sāvitr-yavarajā sutā। tāṃ tvāṃ saṃvaraṇasyārthe varayāmi vibhāvaso ॥1-163-1॥

स हि राजा बृहत्कीर्तिर्धर्मार्थविदुदारधीः। युक्तः संवरणो भर्ता दुहितुस्ते विहङ्गम ॥१-१६३-२॥

The gandharva said.
इत्युक्तः सविता तेन ददानीत्येव निश्चितः। प्रत्यभाषत तं विप्रं प्रतिनन्द्य दिवाकरः ॥१-१६३-३॥
ityuktaḥ savitā tena dadānītyeva niścitaḥ। pratyabhāṣata taṃ vipraṃ pratinandya divākaraḥ ॥1-163-3॥

वरः संवरणो राज्ञां त्वमृषीणां वरो मुने। तपती योषितां श्रेष्ठा किमन्यत्रापवर्जनात् ॥१-१६३-४॥

Saṁvaraṇa is the best among kings, you are the best among sages, O sage. Tapatī is the best among women; what else is there except rejection?
ततः सर्वानवद्याग्नीं तपतीं तपनः स्वयम्। ददौ संवरणस्यार्थे वसिष्ठाय महात्मने ॥ प्रतिजग्राह तां कन्यां महर्षिस्तपतीं तदा ॥१-१६३-५॥
tataḥ sarvānavadyāgnīṃ tapatīṃ tapanaḥ svayam। dadau saṃvaraṇasyārthe vasiṣṭhāya mahātmane ॥ pratijagrāha tāṃ kanyāṃ maharṣistapatīṃ tadā ॥1-163-5॥

(Then the Sun himself gave the all-unblemished, fire-like Tapatī for Saṃvaraṇa's sake to the great-souled Vasiṣṭha. The great sage then accepted that maiden Tapatī.)
Then the Sun himself gave his flawless, radiant daughter Tapatī to the great sage Vasiṣṭha for Saṃvaraṇa's sake. The sage accepted Tapatī as the maiden at that time.
वसिष्ठोऽथ विसृष्टश्च पुनरेवाजगाम ह। यत्र विख्यतकीर्तिः स कुरूणामृषभोऽभवत् ॥१-१६३-६॥
vasiṣṭho'tha visṛṣṭaś ca punar evājagāma ha। yatra vikhyatakīrtiḥ sa kurūṇām ṛṣabho'bhavat॥1-163-6॥

Then Vasiṣṭha, having been released, again went to the place where he who was of renowned fame became the chief of the Kurus.
स राजा मन्मथाविष्टस्तद्गतेनान्तरात्मना। दृष्ट्वा च देवकन्यां तां तपतीं चारुहासिनीम् ॥ वसिष्ठेन सहायान्तीं संहृष्टोऽभ्यधिकं बभौ ॥१-१६३-७॥
sa rājā manmathāviṣṭas tadgatenāntarātmanā। dṛṣṭvā ca devakanyāṃ tāṃ tapatīṃ cāruhāsinīm ॥ vasiṣṭhena sahāyāntīṃ saṃhṛṣṭo'bhyaḍhikaṃ babhau ॥1-163-7॥

(He, the king, overcome by Kāma, with his mind and inner self fixed on her, having seen the divine maiden, that Tapatī with a beautiful smile, accompanied by Vasiṣṭha, exceedingly delighted, shone.)
The king, overcome by love and with his heart set on her, saw the divine maiden Tapatī, radiant with a beautiful smile, accompanied by Vasiṣṭha, and shone with great joy.
कृच्छ्रे द्वादशरात्रे तु तस्य राज्ञः समापिते। आजगाम विशुद्धात्मा वसिष्ठो भगवानृषिः ॥१-१६३-८॥

When the twelve nights of penance of the king were completed, the pure-hearted sage Vasiṣṭha, the venerable one, arrived.
तपसाराध्य वरदं देवं गोपतिमीश्वरम्। लेभे संवरणो भार्यां वसिष्ठस्यैव तेजसा ॥१-१६३-९॥
tapasārādhya varadaṃ devaṃ gopatim īśvaram। lebhe saṃvaraṇo bhāryāṃ vasiṣṭhasyaiva tejasā ॥1-163-9॥
[तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; आराध्य (ārādhya) - having propitiated; वरदम् (varadam) - bestower of boons; देवम् (devam) - the god; गोपतिम् (gopatim) - the lord of cows; ईश्वरम् (īśvaram) - the supreme lord; लेभे (lebhe) - obtained; संवरणः (saṃvaraṇaḥ) - Saṃvaraṇa; भार्याम् (bhāryām) - wife; वसिष्ठस्य (vasiṣṭhasya) - of Vasiṣṭha; एव (eva) - indeed; तेजसा (tejasā) - by the energy;]
(By austerity, having propitiated the bestower of boons, the god, the lord of cows, the supreme lord, Saṃvaraṇa obtained a wife by the energy of Vasiṣṭha indeed.)
Saṃvaraṇa, by performing austerities and propitiating the boon-giving god, the lord of cows and supreme lord, obtained a wife through the power of Vasiṣṭha.
ततस्तस्मिन्गिरिश्रेष्ठे देवगन्धर्वसेविते। जग्राह विधिवत्पाणिं तपत्याः स नरर्षभः ॥१-१६३-१०॥
tatas tasmin giriśreṣṭhe devagandharvasevite। jagrāha vidhivat pāṇiṃ tapatyāḥ sa nararṣabhaḥ ॥1-163-10॥

(Then, in that best mountain attended by gods and gandharvas, he, the best among men, took the hand of Tapati according to the rite.)
Then, on that best of mountains attended by gods and gandharvas, the best among men took Tapati's hand in marriage according to the prescribed rites.
वसिष्ठेनाभ्यनुज्ञातस्तस्मिन्नेव धराधरे। सोऽकामयत राजर्षिर्विहर्तुं सह भार्यया ॥१-१६३-११॥
vasiṣṭhenābhyanujñātastasminneva dharādhare। so'kāmayata rājarṣirvihartuṃ saha bhāryayā ॥1-163-11॥

(By Vasiṣṭha having been permitted, in that indeed on the mountain, he desired, the royal sage, to enjoy with his wife.)
Having been permitted by Vasiṣṭha, the royal sage desired to enjoy himself with his wife on that very mountain.
ततः पुरे च राष्ट्रे च वाहनेषु बलेषु च। आदिदेश महीपालस्तमेव सचिवं तदा ॥१-१६३-१२॥
tataḥ pure ca rāṣṭre ca vāhaneṣu baleṣu ca। ādideśa mahīpālas tameva sacivaṃ tadā ॥1-163-12॥

Then, the king gave orders to that very minister, both in the city and the kingdom, among the vehicles and the armies, at that time.
नृपतिं त्वभ्यनुज्ञाय वसिष्ठोऽथापचक्रमे। सोऽपि राजा गिरौ तस्मिन्विजहारामरोपमः ॥१-१६३-१३॥
nṛpatiṃ tv abhyanujñāya vasiṣṭho 'thāpacakrame। so 'pi rājā girau tasmin vijahāra amaropamaḥ ॥1-163-13॥

tato dvādaśa varṣāṇi kānaneṣu jaleṣu ca। reme tasmin girau rājā tayā eva saha bhāryayā॥1-163-14॥

(Of him, of the king, in the city, in that, years twelve entirely; not rained the thousand-eyed (Indra); in the kingdom and indeed of him entirely.)
For twelve full years, in the city and throughout the kingdom of that king, Indra did not cause rain at all.
तत्क्षुधार्तैर्निरानन्दैः शवभूतैस्तदा नरैः। अभवत्प्रेतराजस्य पुरं प्रेतैरिवावृतम् ॥१-१६३-१६॥
tatkṣudhārtair nirānandaiḥ śavabhūtais tadā naraiḥ। abhavat pretarājasya puraṃ pretair ivāvṛtam ॥1-163-16॥
[तत् (tat) - then; क्षुधार्तैः (kṣudhārtaiḥ) - by those afflicted with hunger; निरानन्दैः (nirānandaiḥ) - by those devoid of joy; शवभूतैः (śavabhūtaiḥ) - by those become like corpses; तदा (tadā) - at that time; नरैः (naraiḥ) - by men; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; प्रेतराजस्य (pretarājasya) - of the king of the dead; पुरम् (puram) - city; प्रेतैः (pretaiḥ) - by ghosts; इव (iva) - like; आवृतम् (āvṛtam) - enveloped;]
(Then, by those afflicted with hunger, by those devoid of joy, by those become like corpses, at that time, by men, the city of the king of the dead became enveloped by ghosts, like (that).)
At that time, the city became like the city of the king of the dead, enveloped by men who were hungry, joyless, and corpse-like, as if surrounded by ghosts.
ततस्तत्तादृशं दृष्ट्वा स एव भगवानृषिः। अभ्यपद्यत धर्मात्मा वसिष्ठो राजसत्तमम् ॥१-१६३-१७॥
tatas tattādṛśaṃ dṛṣṭvā sa eva bhagavān ṛṣiḥ। abhyapadyata dharmātmā vasiṣṭho rājasattamam ॥1-163-17॥

(Then, having seen that such (a thing), that very venerable sage, the righteous-souled Vasiṣṭha, approached the best among kings.)
Then, seeing that, the venerable sage Vasiṣṭha, who was righteous-souled, approached the best of kings.
तं च पार्थिवशार्दूलमानयामास तत्पुरम्। तपत्या सहितं राजन्नुषितं द्वादशीः समाः ॥१-१६३-१८॥
taṃ ca pārthivaśārdūlam ānayām āsa tat puram। tapatyā sahitaṃ rājan nuṣitaṃ dvādaśīḥ samāḥ ॥1-163-18॥

ततः प्रवृष्टस्तत्रासीद्यथापूर्वं सुरारिहा। तस्मिन्नृपतिशार्दूले प्रविष्टे नगरं पुनः ॥१-१६३-१९॥
tataḥ pravṛṣṭastatrāsīdyathāpūrvaṃ surārihā। tasminnṛpatiśārdūle praviṣṭe nagaraṃ punaḥ ॥1-163-19॥
