तस्मै यथावत्सत्कारं कृत्वा तेन च सान्त्विताः। कथान्ते चाभ्यनुज्ञाताः प्रययुर्द्रुपदक्षयम् ॥१-१७६-३॥

पश्यन्तो रमणीयानि वनानि च सरांसि च। तत्र तत्र वसन्तश्च शनैर्जग्मुर्महारथाः ॥१-१७६-४॥

The great chariot-warriors slowly proceeded, seeing beautiful forests and lakes here and there, and staying at various places along the way.
स्वाध्यायवन्तः शुचयो मधुराः प्रियवादिनः। आनुपूर्व्येण सम्प्राप्ताः पाञ्चालान्कुरुनन्दनाः ॥१-१७६-५॥

The descendants of Kuru, who were devoted to self-study, pure, sweet-natured, and spoke agreeable words, arrived at the Pañcālas in due order.
ते तु दृष्ट्वा पुरं तच्च स्कन्धावारं च पाण्डवाः। कुम्भकारस्य शालायां निवेशं चक्रिरे तदा ॥१-१७६-६॥

(They but having seen the city and that military camp and the Pāṇḍavas in the potter's house settlement made then.)
But after seeing the city and that military camp, the Pāṇḍavas then made their settlement in the potter's house.
तत्र भैक्षं समाजह्रुर्ब्राह्मीं वृत्तिं समाश्रिताः। तांश्च प्राप्तांस्तदा वीराञ्जज्ञिरे न नराः क्वचित् ॥१-१७६-७॥
tatra bhaikṣaṃ samājahrur brāhmīṃ vṛttiṃ samāśritāḥ। tāṃś ca prāptāṃs tadā vīrāñ jajñire na narāḥ kvacit॥1-176-7॥

(There, having adopted the Brahmanical livelihood, they collected alms together; and then, men did not recognize those heroes who had attained (that state) anywhere.)

यज्ञसेनस्य कामस्तु पाण्डवाय किरीटिने। कृष्णां दद्यामिति सदा न चैतद्विवृणोति सः ॥१-१७६-८॥
yajñasenasya kāmastu pāṇḍavāya kirīṭine। kṛṣṇāṃ dadyāmiti sadā na caitadvivṛṇoti saḥ ॥1-176-8॥
[यज्ञसेनस्य (yajñasenasya) - of Yajñasena; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; तु (tu) - but; पाण्डवाय (pāṇḍavāya) - to Pāṇḍava; किरीटिने (kirīṭine) - to the one with the crown; कृष्णां (kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); दद्याम् (dadyām) - I should give; इति (iti) - thus; सदा (sadā) - always; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; विवृणोति (vivṛṇoti) - he declares; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(But the desire of Yajñasena is always thus: 'I should give Kṛṣṇā to the crowned Pāṇḍava,' yet he does not declare this.)
Yajñasena always wishes to give Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) to the crowned Pāṇḍava, but he never openly declares this.
सोऽन्वेषमाणः कौन्तेयान्पाञ्चाल्यो जनमेजय। दृढं धनुरनायम्यं कारयामास भारत ॥१-१७६-९॥
so'nveṣamāṇaḥ kaunteyān pāñcālyo janamejaya। dṛḍhaṃ dhanur anāyamyaṃ kārayāmāsa bhārata ॥1-176-9॥

(He, searching for the sons of Kuntī, the son of Pāñcālī, Janamejaya, caused a firm, not easily drawn bow to be made, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, Janamejaya, the son of Pāñcālī, searching for the sons of Kuntī, had a strong and hard-to-draw bow made.
यन्त्रं वैहायसं चापि कारयामास कृत्रिमम्। तेन यन्त्रेण सहितं राजा लक्ष्यं च काञ्चनम् ॥१-१७६-१०॥
yantraṃ vaihāyasaṃ cāpi kārayāmāsa kṛtrimam। tena yantreṇa sahitaṃ rājā lakṣyaṃ ca kāñcanam ॥1-176-10॥

(The king also caused an artificial aerial machine to be made. With that machine, together, the king (had) a golden target (set up).)

इदं सज्यं धनुः कृत्वा सज्येनानेन सायकैः। अतीत्य लक्ष्यं यो वेद्धा स लब्धा मत्सुतामिति ॥१-१७६-११॥
idaṃ sajyaṃ dhanuḥ kṛtvā sajyenānena sāyakaiḥ। atītya lakṣyaṃ yo veddhā sa labdhā matsutāmiti ॥1-176-11॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; सज्यं (sajyaṃ) - strung; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; सज्येन (sajyena) - with the strung; अनेन (anena) - by this; सायकैः (sāyakaiḥ) - with arrows; अतीत्य (atītya) - having surpassed; लक्ष्यं (lakṣyaṃ) - target; यः (yaḥ) - who; वेद्धा (veddhā) - pierces; सः (saḥ) - he; लब्धा (labdhā) - obtains; मत्सुताम् (matsutām) - my daughter; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Having made this bow strung, with this strung bow and arrows, whoever, having surpassed the target, pierces (it), he thus obtains my daughter.)
Whoever, having strung this bow and with these arrows, surpasses and pierces the target, he shall win my daughter—thus (it is declared).

ऋषयश्च महात्मानः स्वयंवरदिदृक्षया। दुर्योधनपुरोगाश्च सकर्णाः कुरवो नृप ॥१-१७६-१३॥
ṛṣayaś ca mahātmānaḥ svayaṃvaradidṛkṣayā। duryodhanapurogāś ca saskarṇāḥ kuravo nṛpa ॥1-176-13॥

(Seers and great-souled ones, with the desire to see the svayaṃvara; and the Kurus, led by Duryodhana, with Karṇa, O king.)
O king, seers and great-souled ones came to witness the svayaṃvara, and the Kurus, led by Duryodhana and accompanied by Karṇa, were also present.
ब्राह्मणाश्च महाभागा देशेभ्यः समुपागमन्। तेऽभ्यर्चिता राजगणा द्रुपदेन महात्मना ॥१-१७६-१४॥

Brāhmaṇas and other greatly fortunate ones from various regions assembled together. The groups of kings, having been honored by the noble Drupada, were received with respect.
ततः पौरजनाः सर्वे सागरोद्धूतनिःस्वनाः। शिशुमारपुरं प्राप्य न्यविशंस्ते च पार्थिवाः ॥१-१७६-१५॥
tataḥ paurajanāḥ sarve sāgaroddhūtaniḥsvanāḥ। śiśumārapuraṃ prāpya nyaviśaṃste ca pārthivāḥ ॥1-176-15॥

Then all the citizens, accompanied by the sound raised by the ocean, reached the city of Śiśumāra, and the kings also settled there.
प्रागुत्तरेण नगराद्भूमिभागे समे शुभे। समाजवाटः शुशुभे भवनैः सर्वतो वृतः ॥१-१७६-१६॥
prāguttareṇa nagarādbhūmibhāge same śubhe। samājavāṭaḥ śuśubhe bhavanaiḥ sarvato vṛtaḥ ॥1-176-16॥

प्राकारपरिखोपेतो द्वारतोरणमण्डितः। वितानेन विचित्रेण सर्वतः समवस्तृतः ॥१-१७६-१७॥

तूर्यौघशतसङ्कीर्णः परार्ध्यागुरुधूपितः। चन्दनोदकसिक्तश्च माल्यदामैश्च शोभितः ॥१-१७६-१८॥
tūryaughaśatasaṅkīrṇaḥ parārdhyāgurudhūpitaḥ। candanodakasiktaśca mālyadāmaiśca śobhitaḥ ॥1-176-18॥

कैलासशिखरप्रख्यैर्नभस्तलविलेखिभिः। सर्वतः संवृतैर्नद्धः प्रासादैः सुकृतोच्छ्रितैः ॥१-१७६-१९॥
kailāsaśikharaprakhyair nabhastalavilekhibhiḥ। sarvataḥ saṁvṛtair naddhaḥ prāsādaiḥ sukṛtocchritaiḥ ॥1-176-19॥
[कैलासशिखरप्रख्यैः (kailāsaśikharaprakhyaiḥ) - by those resembling the peaks of Kailāsa; नभस्तलविलेखिभिः (nabhastalavilekhibhiḥ) - piercing the surface of the sky; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all sides; संवृतैः (saṁvṛtaiḥ) - enclosed; नद्धः (naddhaḥ) - bound; प्रासादैः (prāsādaiḥ) - by mansions; सुकृतोच्छ्रितैः (sukṛtocchritaiḥ) - well-constructed and lofty;]
(Bound on all sides by mansions resembling the peaks of Kailāsa, piercing the surface of the sky, enclosed and well-constructed, lofty.)

सुवर्णजालसंवीतैर्मणिकुट्टिमभूषितैः। सुखारोहणसोपानैर्महासनपरिच्छदैः ॥१-१७६-२०॥

अग्राम्यसमवच्छन्नैरगुरूत्तमवासितैः। हंसाच्छवर्णैर्बहुभिरायोजनसुगन्धिभिः ॥१-१७६-२१॥

(This doer (is) one who performs a very difficult action; who is endowed with lineage, beauty, and strength. Today, his wife, my sister, this Kṛṣṇā, will become (his); I do not speak falsely.)

(Having thus spoken to them, the son of Drupada afterwards addressed this to Draupadī. By name, by lineage, and by deed, reciting those assembled kings.)
