नारद उवाच॥
Nārada said.
कथयिष्ये सभां दिव्यां युधिष्ठिर निबोध ताम्। वैवस्वतस्य यामर्थे विश्वकर्मा चकार ह ॥२-८-१॥
O Yudhiṣṭhira, listen as I describe the divine assembly hall which Viśvakarmā created for Vaivasvata. (2-8-1)
तैजसी सा सभा राजन्बभूव शतयोजना। विस्तारायामसम्पन्ना भूयसी चापि पाण्डव ॥२-८-२॥
O Pāṇḍava, that radiant assembly became one hundred yojanas in dimension, endowed with great breadth and length, and was very magnificent, O king. (2-8-2)
अर्कप्रकाशा भ्राजिष्णुः सर्वतः कामचारिणी। नैवातिशीता नात्युष्णा मनसश्च प्रहर्षिणी ॥२-८-३॥
She shines with the radiance of the sun, resplendent on all sides, moving as she pleases; she is neither too cold nor too hot, and delights the mind. (2-8-3)
न शोको न जरा तस्यां क्षुत्पिपासे न चाप्रियम्। न च दैन्यं क्लमो वापि प्रतिकूलं न चाप्युत ॥२-८-४॥
In that state, there is no sorrow, no old age, no hunger or thirst, nor anything unpleasant; there is no misery, fatigue, or anything adverse, not even the slightest. (2-8-4)
सर्वे कामाः स्थितास्तस्यां ये दिव्या ये च मानुषाः। रसवच्च प्रभूतं च भक्ष्यभोज्यमरिंदम ॥२-८-५॥
O subduer of enemies, all desires, both divine and human, are present there; and there is an abundance of tasty food and eatables. (2-8-5)
पुण्यगन्धाः स्रजस्तत्र नित्यपुष्पफलद्रुमाः। रसवन्ति च तोयानि शीतान्युष्णानि चैव ह ॥२-८-६॥
There are garlands with sacred fragrance, and trees that always bear flowers and fruits. The waters there are full of sap, both cool and warm. (2-8-6)
तस्यां राजर्षयः पुण्यास्तथा ब्रह्मर्षयोऽमलाः। यमं वैवस्वतं तात प्रहृष्टाः पर्युपासते ॥२-८-७॥
In that place, O dear one, the virtuous royal sages and the pure brahma-sages joyfully attend upon Yama, the son of Vivasvat. (2-8-7)
ययातिर्नहुषः पूरुर्मान्धाता सोमको नृगः। त्रसदस्युश्च तुरयः कृतवीर्यः श्रुतश्रवाः ॥२-८-८॥
Yayāti, Nahuṣa, Pūru, Māndhātā, Somaka, Nṛga, Trasadasyu, Turaya, Kṛtavīrya, and Śrutaśravā were (great) kings. (2-8-8)
अरिप्रणुत्सुसिंहश्च कृतवेगः कृतिर्निमिः। प्रतर्दनः शिबिर्मत्स्यः पृथ्वक्षोऽथ बृहद्रथः ॥२-८-९॥
The lion praised by enemies, the swift Kṛti, Nimi, Pratardana, Śibi, Matsya, the broad-chested one, and then Bṛhadratha. (2-8-9)
ऐडो मरुत्तः कुशिकः साङ्काश्यः साङ्कृतिर्भवः। चतुरश्वः सदश्वोर्मिः कार्तवीर्यश्च पार्थिवः ॥२-८-१०॥
Aida, Marutta, Kuśika, Sāṅkāśya, Sāṅkṛti, Bhava, Caturaśva, Sadaśva, Urmi, Kārtavīrya, and the king. (2-8-10)
भरतस्तथा सुरथः सुनीथो नैषधो नलः। दिवोदासोऽथ सुमना अम्बरीषो भगीरथः ॥२-८-११॥
Bharata, likewise Suratha, Sunītha, Naiṣadha, Nala, Divodāsa, then Sumanā, Ambarīṣa, and Bhagīratha. (2-8-11)
व्यश्वः सदश्वो वध्र्यश्वः पञ्चहस्तः पृथुश्रवाः। रुषद्गुर्वृषसेनश्च क्षुपश्च सुमहाबलः ॥२-८-१२॥
Vyaśva, Sadaśva, Vadhrayaśva, Pañcahasta, Pṛthuśravā, Ruṣadgu, Vṛṣasena, Kṣupa, and Sumahābala were present, each distinguished by their respective qualities. (2-8-12)
रुषदश्वो वसुमनाः पुरुकुत्सो ध्वजी रथी। आर्ष्टिषेणो दिलीपश्च महात्मा चाप्युशीनरः ॥२-८-१३॥
Ruṣadaśva, the rich-minded Purukutsa, the bannered charioteer Ārṣṭiṣeṇa, Dilīpa, and the great-souled Uśīnara also. (2-8-13)
औशीनरः पुण्डरीकः शर्यातिः शरभः शुचिः। अङ्गोऽरिष्टश्च वेनश्च दुःषन्तः सञ्जयो जयः ॥२-८-१४॥
Auśīnara, Puṇḍarīka, Śaryāti, Śarabha, Śuci, Aṅga, Ariṣṭa, Vena, Duḥṣanta, Sañjaya, and Jaya. (2-8-14)
भाङ्गास्वरिः सुनीथश्च निषधोऽथ त्विषीरथः। करन्धमो बाह्लिकश्च सुद्युम्नो बलवान्मधुः ॥२-८-१५॥
Bhāṅgāsvari, Sunītha, Niṣadha, then Tviṣīratha; Karandhama, Bāhlika, Sudyumna, and the mighty Madhu. (2-8-15)
कपोतरोमा तृणकः सहदेवार्जुनौ तथा। रामो दाशरथिश्चैव लक्ष्मणोऽथ प्रतर्दनः ॥२-८-१६॥
Kapotaromā, Tṛṇaka, Sahadeva, Arjuna, Rāma the son of Daśaratha, Lakṣmaṇa, and Pratardana (2-8-16)
अलर्कः कक्षसेनश्च गयो गौराश्व एव च। जामदग्न्योऽथ रामोऽत्र नाभागसगरौ तथा ॥२-८-१७॥
Alarka, Kakshasena, Gaya, and Gaurāśva, as well as the descendant of Jamadagni, then Rama here, and likewise Nabhaga and Sagara. (2-8-17)
भूरिद्युम्नो महाश्वश्च पृथ्वश्वो जनकस्तथा। वैन्यो राजा वारिषेणः पुरुजो जनमेजयः ॥२-८-१८॥
Bhūridyumna, Mahāśva, Pṛthvaśva, Janaka, Vainya, King Vāriṣeṇa, Puruja, and Janamejaya (2-8-18).
ब्रह्मदत्तस्त्रिगर्तश्च राजोपरिचरस्तथा। इन्द्रद्युम्नो भीमजानुर्गयः पृष्ठो नयोऽनघः ॥२-८-१९॥
Brahmadatta, Trigarta, and also Rājoparicara; Indradyumna, Bhīmajānu, Gaya, Pṛṣṭha, Naya, and Anagha. (2-8-19)
पद्मोऽथ मुचुकुन्दश्च भूरिद्युम्नः प्रसेनजित्। अरिष्टनेमिः प्रद्युम्नः पृथगश्वोऽजकस्तथा ॥२-८-२०॥
Padma, then Mucukunda, Bhūridyumna, Prasenajit, Ariṣṭanemi, Pradyumna, Pṛthagaśva, and also Ajaka. (2-8-20)
शतं मत्स्या नृपतयः शतं नीपाः शतं हयाः। धृतराष्ट्राश्चैकशतमशीतिर्जनमेजयाः ॥२-८-२१॥
There were a hundred Matsya kings, a hundred Nipa kings, a hundred horses; there were also Dhritarashtras and one hundred and eighty Janamejayas. (2-8-21)
शतं च ब्रह्मदत्तानामीरिणां वैरिणां शतम्। शन्तनुश्चैव राजर्षिः पाण्डुश्चैव पिता तव ॥२-८-२२॥
There were a hundred Brahmadattas, a hundred Īriṇas, and a hundred enemies; Śantanu, the royal sage, and Pāṇḍu, your father, as well. (2-8-22)
उशद्गवः शतरथो देवराजो जयद्रथः। वृषादर्भिश्च राजर्षिर्धाम्ना सह समन्त्रिणा ॥२-८-२३॥
Uśadgava, Śataratha, Devarāja, Jayadratha, and Vṛṣādarbhi, the royal sage, accompanied by his ministers, all resplendent, were present. (2-8-23)
अथापरे सहस्राणि ये गताः शशबिन्दवः। इष्ट्वाश्वमेधैर्बहुभिर्महद्भिर्भूरिदक्षिणैः ॥२-८-२४॥
Now, there were thousands of other Śaśabindus who departed, having performed many great horse-sacrifices with abundant gifts. (2-8-24)
एते राजर्षयः पुण्याः कीर्तिमन्तो बहुश्रुताः। तस्यां सभायां राजर्षे वैवस्वतमुपासते ॥२-८-२५॥
O royal sage, these virtuous, renowned, and learned royal sages in that assembly worship Vaivasvata (Yama). (2-8-25)
अगस्त्योऽथ मतङ्गश्च कालो मृत्युस्तथैव च। यज्वानश्चैव सिद्धाश्च ये च योगशरीरिणः ॥२-८-२६॥
Then Agastya, Mataṅga, Time, Death, sacrificers, perfected beings, and those who possess yogic bodies. (2-8-26)
अग्निष्वात्ताश्च पितरः फेनपाश्चोष्मपाश्च ये। स्वधावन्तो बर्हिषदो मूर्तिमन्तस्तथापरे ॥२-८-२७॥
The Agniṣvāttas and other ancestors—those who drink foam, those who drink warmth, those endowed with svadhā, those who sit on the sacred grass, those with form, and others—are described here. (2-8-27)
कालचक्रं च साक्षाच्च भगवान्हव्यवाहनः। नरा दुष्कृतकर्माणो दक्षिणायनमृत्यवः ॥२-८-२८॥
The wheel of time and Agni himself directly; men of evil deeds who die during the southern course (Dakṣiṇāyana). (2-8-28)
कालस्य नयने युक्ता यमस्य पुरुषाश्च ये। तस्यां शिंशपपालाशास्तथा काशकुशादयः ॥ उपासते धर्मराजं मूर्तिमन्तो निरामयाः ॥२-८-२९॥
Those who are engaged in the administration of time and the attendants of Yama, in that place, the śiṃśapā and palāśa trees, as well as kāśa, kuśa and others, worship Dharmarāja (Yama) in embodied form, free from disease. (2-8-29)
एते चान्ये च बहवः पितृराजसभासदः। अशक्याः परिसङ्ख्यातुं नामभिः कर्मभिस्तथा ॥२-८-३०॥
There are also many others among the members of the assembly of the king of the ancestors, who cannot be fully enumerated by name or by their deeds in this way. (2-8-30)
असम्बाधा हि सा पार्थ रम्या कामगमा सभा। दीर्घकालं तपस्तप्त्वा निर्मिता विश्वकर्मणा ॥२-८-३१॥
O Pārtha, that beautiful and unobstructed assembly hall, which could be accessed at will, was constructed by Viśvakarman after long austerities. (2-8-31)
प्रभासन्ती ज्वलन्तीव तेजसा स्वेन भारत। तामुग्रतपसो यान्ति सुव्रताः सत्यवादिनः ॥२-८-३२॥
O Bhārata, those of good vows and truth-speakers, who have performed severe penance, attain her who shines as if blazing with her own brilliance. (2-8-32)
शान्ताः संन्यासिनः सिद्धाः पूताः पुण्येन कर्मणा। सर्वे भास्वरदेहाश्च सर्वे च विरजोम्बराः ॥२-८-३३॥
All are calm, renunciates, perfected, purified by virtuous actions; all have radiant bodies and all wear spotless garments. (2-8-33)
चित्राङ्गदाश्चित्रमाल्याः सर्वे ज्वलितकुण्डलाः। सुकृतैः कर्मभिः पुण्यैः परिबर्हैर्विभूषिताः ॥२-८-३४॥
All were adorned with variegated armlets and garlands, their earrings blazing, decorated with ornaments, and endowed with the merits of their virtuous deeds. (2-8-34)
गन्धर्वाश्च महात्मानः शतशश्चाप्सरोगणाः। वादित्रं नृत्तगीतं च हास्यं लास्यं च सर्वशः ॥२-८-३५॥
Hundreds of Gandharvas and great souls, and groups of Apsaras; all kinds of music, dance, song, laughter, and graceful performances were present in every way. (2-8-35)
पुण्याश्च गन्धाः शब्दाश्च तस्यां पार्थ समन्ततः। दिव्यानि माल्यानि च तामुपतिष्ठन्ति सर्वशः ॥२-८-३६॥
O Pārtha, auspicious fragrances and sounds surrounded her on all sides; divine garlands also completely attended her. (2-8-36)
शतं शतसहस्राणि धर्मिणां तं प्रजेश्वरम्। उपासते महात्मानं रूपयुक्ता मनस्विनः ॥२-८-३७॥
Hundreds and hundreds of thousands of the righteous worship that lord of the people, the great-souled one, those wise and beautiful ones. (2-8-37)
ईदृशी सा सभा राजन्पितृराज्ञो महात्मनः। वरुणस्यापि वक्ष्यामि सभां पुष्करमालिनीम् ॥२-८-३८॥
O king, such is the assembly of the great-souled Yama; I will now describe the assembly of Varuṇa, which is adorned with garlands of lotuses. (2-8-38)
