Pancharatra: Under the leadership of Krishna Bhima and Arjuna reach the capital of Magadha.

पतितौ हंसडिभकौ कंसामात्यौ निपातितौ। जरासन्धस्य निधने कालोऽयं समुपागतः ॥२-१८-१॥
patitau haṃsaḍibhakau kaṃsāmātyau nipātitau। jarāsandhasya nidhane kālo'yaṃ samupāgataḥ ॥2-18-1॥
[पतितौ (patitau) - fallen; (dual masculine nominative) हंसडिभकौ (haṃsaḍibhakau) - Haṃsa and Ḍibhaka; (dual nominative) कंसामात्यौ (kaṃsāmātyau) - Kamsa's ministers; (dual nominative) निपातितौ (nipātitau) - struck down; (dual masculine nominative) जरासन्धस्य (jarāsandhasya) - of Jarāsandha; निधने (nidhane) - in the death; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; अयम् (ayam) - this; समुपागतः (samupāgataḥ) - has arrived;]
(Haṃsa and Ḍibhaka, Kamsa's ministers, have fallen, have been struck down. In the death of Jarāsandha, this time has arrived. (2-18-1))
Haṃsa and Ḍibhaka, the ministers of Kamsa, have fallen and been slain. Now, the time for the death of Jarāsandha has come. (2-18-1)
न स शक्यो रणे जेतुं सर्वैरपि सुरासुरैः। प्राणयुद्धेन जेतव्यः स इत्युपलभामहे ॥२-१८-२॥
na sa śakyo raṇe jetuṃ sarvair api surāsuraiḥ। prāṇayuddhena jetavyaḥ sa ity upalabhāmahe ॥2-18-2॥
[न (na) - not; स (sa) - he; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; जेतुम् (jetum) - to conquer; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; अपि (api) - even; सुरासुरैः (surāsuraiḥ) - by gods and asuras; प्राणयुद्धेन (prāṇayuddhena) - by life-battle; जेतव्यः (jetavyaḥ) - to be conquered; सः (saḥ) - he; इति (iti) - thus; उपलभामहे (upalabhāmahe) - we understand;]
(He is not possible to be conquered in battle even by all the gods and asuras; he is to be conquered by a battle of life, thus we understand.)
He cannot be defeated in battle even by all the gods and asuras; we understand that he is to be conquered only by a battle for life. (2-18-2)
मयि नीतिर्बलं भीमे रक्षिता चावयोर्जुनः। साधयिष्याम तं राजन्वयं त्रय इवाग्नयः ॥२-१८-३॥
mayi nītirbalaṃ bhīme rakṣitā cāvayorjunaḥ। sādhayiṣyāma taṃ rājanvayaṃ traya ivāgnayaḥ ॥2-18-3॥
[मयि (mayi) - in me; नीतिः (nītiḥ) - policy; बलम् (balam) - strength; भीमे (bhīme) - in Bhīma; रक्षिता (rakṣitā) - protection; च (ca) - and; अवयोः (avayoḥ) - of us two; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; साधयिष्याम (sādhayiṣyāma) - we shall accomplish; तं (tam) - that; राजन् (rājan) - O king; वयम् (vayam) - we; त्रयः (trayaḥ) - three; इव (iva) - like; अग्नयः (agnayaḥ) - fires;]
(In me is policy, in Bhīma is strength, and Arjuna is the protector of us two. We three, O king, shall accomplish that like fires.)
In me lies policy, in Bhīma lies strength, and Arjuna protects the two of us. O king, we three shall accomplish that task like three fires. (2-18-3)
त्रिभिरासादितोऽस्माभिर्विजने स नराधिपः। न संदेहो यथा युद्धमेकेनाभ्युपयास्यति ॥२-१८-४॥
tribhir āsādito'smābhir vijane sa narādhipaḥ। na saṃdeho yathā yuddham ekenābhyupayāsyati ॥2-18-4॥
[त्रिभिः (tribhiḥ) - by three; आसादितः (āsāditaḥ) - approached; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; विजने (vijane) - in a solitary place; सः (saḥ) - he; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - king; न (na) - not; संदेहः (saṃdehaḥ) - doubt; यथा (yathā) - as; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; एकेन (ekena) - by one; अभ्युपयास्यति (abhyupayāsyati) - will approach;]
(He, the king, having been approached by us three in a solitary place, there is no doubt that he will approach battle alone.)
There is no doubt that the king, having been confronted by the three of us in a solitary place, will engage in battle alone. (2-18-4)
अवमानाच्च लोकस्य व्यायतत्वाच्च धर्षितः। भीमसेनेन युद्धाय ध्रुवमभ्युपयास्यति ॥२-१८-५॥
avamānācca lokasya vyāyatattvācca dharṣitaḥ। bhīmasenena yuddhāya dhruvamabhyupayāsyati ॥2-18-5॥
[अवमानात् (avamānāt) - from insult; च (ca) - and; लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the people; व्यायतत्वात् (vyāyatattvāt) - from exertion; च (ca) - and; धर्षितः (dharṣitaḥ) - having been provoked; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhīmasena; युद्धाय (yuddhāya) - for battle; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; अभ्युपयास्यति (abhyupayāsyati) - he will approach;]
(From insult and from the exertion of the people, having been provoked, by Bhīmasena, for battle, certainly, he will approach.)
Insulted and provoked by the exertion of the people, Bhīmasena will certainly approach for battle. (2-18-5)
अलं तस्य महाबाहुर्भीमसेनो महाबलः। लोकस्य समुदीर्णस्य निधनायान्तको यथा ॥२-१८-६॥
alaṃ tasya mahābāhurbhīmaseno mahābalaḥ। lokasya samudīrṇasya nidhanāyāntako yathā ॥2-18-6॥
[अलं (alaṃ) - enough; sufficient; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; having great arms; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhimasena; (name of a hero); महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength; very powerful; लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the world; of people; समुदीर्णस्य (samudīrṇasya) - arisen; agitated; stirred up; निधानाय (nidhanāya) - for destruction; for death; अन्तकः (antakaḥ) - destroyer; death; यथा (yathā) - just as; like;]
(Enough of him; the mighty-armed, very powerful Bhimasena, just as Antaka (Death) for the destruction of the arisen world.)
Enough of him; the mighty-armed and very powerful Bhimasena is like Antaka (Death) for the destruction of the agitated world. (2-18-6)
यदि ते हृदयं वेत्ति यदि ते प्रत्ययो मयि। भीमसेनार्जुनौ शीघ्रं न्यासभूतौ प्रयच्छ मे ॥२-१८-७॥
yadi te hṛdayaṃ vetti yadi te pratyayo mayi। bhīmasenārjunau śīghraṃ nyāsabhūtau prayaccha me ॥2-18-7॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - your; हृदयं (hṛdayaṃ) - heart; वेत्ति (vetti) - knows; यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - your; प्रत्ययः (pratyayaḥ) - conviction; मयि (mayi) - in me; भीमसेनार्जुनौ (bhīmasenārjunau) - Bhīmasena and Arjuna; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; न्यासभूतौ (nyāsabhūtau) - as deposit; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - give; मे (me) - to me;]
(If your heart knows, if your conviction is in me, quickly give Bhīmasena and Arjuna as deposit to me.)
If your heart truly knows and you have faith in me, then quickly entrust Bhīmasena and Arjuna to me as a pledge. (2-18-7)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

एवमुक्तो भगवता प्रत्युवाच युधिष्ठिरः। भीमपार्थौ समालोक्य सम्प्रहृष्टमुखौ स्थितौ ॥२-१८-८॥
evam-ukto bhagavatā pratyuvāca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। bhīma-pārthau samālokya samprahṛṣṭa-mukhau sthitau ॥2-18-8॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; भगवता (bhagavatā) - by the venerable one; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; भीमपार्थौ (bhīma-pārthau) - Bhima and Partha; समालोक्य (samālokya) - having looked at; सम्प्रहृष्टमुखौ (samprahṛṣṭa-mukhau) - with delighted faces; स्थितौ (sthitau) - standing;]
(Thus having been addressed by the venerable one, Yudhishthira replied, having looked at Bhima and Partha, who were standing with delighted faces.)

अच्युताच्युत मा मैवं व्याहरामित्रकर्षण। पाण्डवानां भवान्नाथो भवन्तं चाश्रिता वयम् ॥२-१८-९॥
acyutācyuta mā maivaṃ vyāharāmitrakarṣaṇa। pāṇḍavānāṃ bhavānnātho bhavantaṃ cāśritā vayam ॥2-18-9॥
[अच्युत (acyuta) - O Acyuta; (unfallen, epithet of Kṛṣṇa); अच्युत (acyuta) - O Acyuta; (unfallen, epithet of Kṛṣṇa); मा (mā) - do not; (prohibitive particle); मैवं (maivaṃ) - thus; in this way; व्याहरा (vyāhara) - speak; utter; मित्रकर्षण (mitrakarṣaṇa) - O Mitrakarṣaṇa; (Arjuna, 'dragger of friends'); पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; भवान् (bhavān) - you; (honorific); नाथः (nāthaḥ) - protector; lord; भवन्तम् (bhavantaṃ) - you; (honorific, accusative); च (ca) - and; आश्रिताः (āśritāḥ) - dependent; taking refuge; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(O Acyuta, O Acyuta, do not thus speak, O Mitrakarṣaṇa. Of the Pāṇḍavas, you are the protector; we are dependent on you.)
O Acyuta, O Acyuta, do not speak in this way, O Mitrakarṣaṇa. You are the protector of the Pāṇḍavas; we have taken refuge in you. (2-18-9)
यथा वदसि गोविन्द सर्वं तदुपपद्यते। न हि त्वमग्रतस्तेषां येषां लक्ष्मीः पराङ्मुखी ॥२-१८-१०॥
yathā vadasi govinda sarvaṃ tadupapadyate। na hi tvamagratasteṣāṃ yeṣāṃ lakṣmīḥ parāṅmukhī ॥2-18-10॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; how; in which way; वदसि (vadasi) - you say; you speak; गोविन्द (govinda) - Govinda; (epithet of Kṛṣṇa); सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; everything; तत् (tat) - that; उपपद्यते (upapadyate) - is appropriate; is fitting; is justified; न (na) - not; no; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - in front; before; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of those; their; येषां (yeṣāṃ) - of whom; whose; लक्ष्मीः (lakṣmīḥ) - Lakṣmī; fortune; prosperity; पराङ्मुखी (parāṅmukhī) - turned away; averse; facing away;]
(As you say, Govinda, all that is fitting. Indeed, you are not before those whose Lakṣmī is turned away.)
Govinda, as you say, all this is appropriate. Indeed, you are not present before those from whom fortune has turned away. (2-18-10)
निहतश्च जरासन्धो मोक्षिताश्च महीक्षितः। राजसूयश्च मे लब्धो निदेशे तव तिष्ठतः ॥२-१८-११॥
nihataś ca jarāsandho mokṣitāś ca mahīkṣitaḥ। rājasūyaś ca me labdho nideśe tava tiṣṭhataḥ ॥2-18-11॥
[निहतः (nihataḥ) - slain; च (ca) - and; जरासन्धः (jarāsandhaḥ) - Jarāsandha; मोक्षिताः (mokṣitāḥ) - liberated; च (ca) - and; महीक्षितः (mahīkṣitaḥ) - kings; राजसूयः (rājasūyaḥ) - Rājasūya (sacrifice); च (ca) - and; मे (me) - by me; लब्धः (labdhaḥ) - obtained; निदेशे (nideśe) - by the command; तव (tava) - of you; तिष्ठतः (tiṣṭhataḥ) - while abiding;]
(Jarāsandha is slain and the kings are liberated; and the Rājasūya (sacrifice) has been obtained by me while abiding by your command.)
Jarāsandha has been slain, the kings have been freed, and I have accomplished the Rājasūya sacrifice by following your command. (2-18-11)
क्षिप्रकारिन्यथा त्वेतत्कार्यं समुपपद्यते। मम कार्यं जगत्कार्यं तथा कुरु नरोत्तम ॥२-१८-१२॥
kṣiprakāriṇyathā tvetat kāryaṃ samupapadyate। mama kāryaṃ jagatkāryaṃ tathā kuru narottama ॥2-18-12॥
[क्षिप्रकारिणी (kṣiprakāriṇī) - quick-acting; यथा (yathā) - just as; त्वेतत् (tvetat) - by you this; कार्यं (kāryam) - action; समुपपद्यते (samupapadyate) - is accomplished; मम (mama) - my; कार्यं (kāryam) - action; जगत् (jagat) - world; कार्यं (kāryam) - action; तथा (tathā) - so; कुरु (kuru) - do; नरोत्तम (narottama) - O best of men;]
(Just as this action is quickly accomplished by you, so do my action, the action of the world, O best of men.)
O best of men, just as you quickly accomplish this task, in the same way, do my work, which is the work of the world. (2-18-12)
त्रिभिर्भवद्भिर्हि विना नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे। धर्मकामार्थरहितो रोगार्त इव दुर्गतः ॥२-१८-१३॥
tribhirbhavadbhirhi vinā nāhaṃ jīvitumutsahe। dharmakāmārtharahito rogārta iva durgataḥ ॥2-18-13॥
[त्रिभिः (tribhiḥ) - by the three; (i.e., you three;) भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you; (honorific plural;) हि (hi) - indeed; विना (vinā) - without; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am able; धर्म (dharma) - righteousness; काम (kāma) - desire; अर्थ (artha) - wealth; रहितः (rahitaḥ) - deprived of; रोगार्तः (rogārtaḥ) - afflicted by disease; इव (iva) - like; दुर्गतः (durgataḥ) - one in distress;]
(Indeed, without you three, I am not able to live; deprived of righteousness, desire, and wealth, like one afflicted by disease, in distress.)
Truly, without you three, I cannot live; deprived of righteousness, desire, and wealth, I am like a man in distress, afflicted by disease. (2-18-13)
न शौरिणा विना पार्थो न शौरिः पाण्डवं विना। नाजेयोऽस्त्यनयोर्लोके कृष्णयोरिति मे मतिः ॥२-१८-१४॥
na śauriṇā vinā pārtho na śauriḥ pāṇḍavaṃ vinā। nājeyo'styanayor loke kṛṣṇayor iti me matiḥ ॥2-18-14॥
[न (na) - not; शौरिणा (śauriṇā) - by Śauri (Kṛṣṇa); विना (vinā) - without; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); न (na) - not; शौरिः (śauriḥ) - Śauri (Kṛṣṇa); पाण्डवं (pāṇḍavam) - the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna); विना (vinā) - without; न (na) - not; अजेयः (ajeyaḥ) - invincible; अस्ति (asti) - is; अनयोः (anayoḥ) - of these two; लोके (loke) - in the world; कृष्णयोः (kṛṣṇayoḥ) - of the two Kṛṣṇas (Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna); इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion;]
(Not by Śauri without Pārtha, not Śauri without the Pāṇḍava; not invincible is of these two in the world, of the two Kṛṣṇas—thus is my opinion.)
Neither can Arjuna succeed without Kṛṣṇa, nor Kṛṣṇa without Arjuna; in this world, neither of the two is invincible without the other—this is my opinion. (2-18-14)
अयं च बलिनां श्रेष्ठः श्रीमानपि वृकोदरः। युवाभ्यां सहितो वीरः किं न कुर्यान्महायशाः ॥२-१८-१५॥
ayaṃ ca balināṃ śreṣṭhaḥ śrīmān api vṛkodaraḥ। yuvābhyāṃ sahito vīraḥ kiṃ na kuryān mahāyaśāḥ ॥2-18-15॥
[अयं (ayaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; बलिनां (balināṃ) - of the strong; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - prosperous; अपि (api) - also; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma); युवाभ्यां (yuvābhyām) - with you two; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; किं (kiṃ) - what; न (na) - not; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - could do; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - greatly renowned;]
(This and of the strong the best, prosperous also Vṛkodara, with you two together, hero, what not could do, greatly renowned.)
This Vṛkodara, who is the best among the strong and prosperous, together with you two heroes—what could this greatly renowned hero not accomplish? (2-18-15)
सुप्रणीतो बलौघो हि कुरुते कार्यमुत्तमम्। अन्धं जडं बलं प्राहुः प्रणेतव्यं विचक्षणैः ॥२-१८-१६॥
supraṇīto balaugho hi kurute kāryamuttamam। andhaṃ jaḍaṃ balaṃ prāhuḥ praṇetavyaṃ vicakṣaṇaiḥ ॥2-18-16॥
[सुप्रणीतः (supraṇītaḥ) - well-guided; बल-ओघः (bala-oghaḥ) - force-mass; हि (hi) - indeed; कुरुते (kurute) - does; कार्यं (kāryam) - action; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; अन्धं (andham) - blind; जडं (jaḍam) - dull; बलं (balam) - strength; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - they say; प्रणेतव्यम् (praṇetavyam) - to be guided; विचक्षणैः (vicakṣaṇaiḥ) - by the wise;]
(Indeed, a well-guided mass of force accomplishes excellent action. Blind, dull strength is said to be to be guided by the wise.)
A well-directed force truly accomplishes excellent deeds. Strength that is blind and dull, they say, must be guided by the wise. (2-18-16)
यतो हि निम्नं भवति नयन्तीह ततो जलम्। यतश्छिद्रं ततश्चापि नयन्ते धीधना बलम् ॥२-१८-१७॥
yato hi nimnaṃ bhavati nayantīha tato jalam। yataśchidraṃ tataścāpi nayante dhīdhanā balam ॥2-18-17॥
[यतः (yataḥ) - from where; हि (hi) - indeed; निम्नं (nimnam) - downward; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; नयन्ति (nayanti) - lead; इह (iha) - here; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; जलम् (jalam) - water; यतः (yataḥ) - from where; छिद्रं (chidram) - hole; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; नयन्ते (nayante) - lead; धीधना (dhīdhanā) - the wise and the wealthy; बलम् (balam) - strength;]
(From where indeed it becomes downward, here from there water is led. From where there is a hole, from there also the wise and the wealthy lead strength.)
Just as water flows downwards from where there is a slope, and from where there is a hole it is drawn, so too the wise and the wealthy draw strength from wherever it is available. (2-18-17)
तस्मान्नयविधानज्ञं पुरुषं लोकविश्रुतम्। वयमाश्रित्य गोविन्दं यतामः कार्यसिद्धये ॥२-१८-१८॥
tasmān nayavidhānajñaṃ puruṣaṃ lokaviśrutam। vayam āśritya govindaṃ yatāmaḥ kāryasiddhaye ॥2-18-18॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; नयविधानज्ञम् (nayavidhānajñam) - knower of the rules of policy; पुरुषम् (puruṣam) - man; लोकविश्रुतम् (lokaviśrutam) - renowned in the world; वयम् (vayam) - we; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - having resorted to; गोविन्दम् (govindam) - Govinda; यतामः (yatāmaḥ) - we strive; कार्यसिद्धये (kāryasiddhaye) - for the accomplishment of the task;]
(Therefore, having resorted to Govinda, the man renowned in the world as a knower of the rules of policy, we strive for the accomplishment of the task.)

एवं प्रज्ञानयबलं क्रियोपायसमन्वितम्। पुरस्कुर्वीत कार्येषु कृष्ण कार्यार्थसिद्धये ॥२-१८-१९॥
evaṃ prajñānayabalaṃ kriyopāyasamanvitam। puraskurvīta kāryeṣu kṛṣṇa kāryārthasiddhaye ॥2-18-19॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; प्रज्ञानय (prajñānaya) - with wisdom; बलं (balaṃ) - strength; क्रिय (kriya) - action; उपाय (upāya) - means; समन्वितम् (samanvitam) - endowed with; पुरस्कुर्वीत (puraskurvīta) - should undertake; कार्येषु (kāryeṣu) - in actions; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Kṛṣṇa; कार्यार्थ (kāryārtha) - for the purpose of the task; सिद्धये (siddhaye) - for accomplishment;]
(Thus, with the strength of wisdom and endowed with means of action, one should undertake actions, O Kṛṣṇa, for the accomplishment of the purpose of the task.)
Therefore, O Kṛṣṇa, one should perform actions with the strength of wisdom and the proper means, in order to accomplish the intended purpose. (2-18-19)
एवमेव यदुश्रेष्ठं पार्थः कार्यार्थसिद्धये। अर्जुनः कृष्णमन्वेतु भीमोऽन्वेतु धनञ्जयम् ॥ नयो जयो बलं चैव विक्रमे सिद्धिमेष्यति ॥२-१८-२०॥
evameva yaduśreṣṭhaṃ pārthaḥ kāryārthasiddhaye। arjunaḥ kṛṣṇamanvetu bhīmo'nvetu dhanañjayam ॥ nayo jayo balaṃ caiva vikrame siddhimeṣyati ॥2-18-20॥

(Thus indeed, O best of the Yadus, Pārtha (Arjuna) for the accomplishment of the purpose, Arjuna should follow Kṛṣṇa, Bhīma should follow Dhanañjaya. Policy, victory, and strength indeed, in prowess, will attain success.)
In this way, O best of the Yadus, for the accomplishment of the task, Arjuna should follow Kṛṣṇa, and Bhīma should follow Dhanañjaya. Policy, victory, and strength, when combined with prowess, will lead to success. (2-18-20)
एवमुक्तास्ततः सर्वे भ्रातरो विपुलौजसः। वार्ष्णेयः पाण्डवेयौ च प्रतस्थुर्मागधं प्रति ॥२-१८-२१॥

(Thus having been spoken, then all the brothers of great strength, the descendant of Vṛṣṇi, and the two sons of Pāṇḍu set out towards Magadha.)
After these words were spoken, all the powerful brothers—Kṛṣṇa, the descendant of Vṛṣṇi, and the two sons of Pāṇḍu—set out for Magadha. (2-18-21)
वर्चस्विनां ब्राह्मणानां स्नातकानां परिच्छदान्। आच्छाद्य सुहृदां वाक्यैर्मनोज्ञैरभिनन्दिताः ॥२-१८-२२॥
varcasvināṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ snātakānāṃ paricchadān। ācchādya suhṛdāṃ vākyairmanojñairabhinanditāḥ ॥2-18-22॥

(From anger, of those who are greatly tormented, for the sake of kinsmen, of the chiefly clad, of the forms of sun, moon, and fire, terrible was then the form.)
Then, for the sake of their kinsmen, the leaders, tormented by anger, assumed a terrible form, resembling the forms of the sun, moon, and fire. (2-18-23)
हतं मेने जरासन्धं दृष्ट्वा भीमपुरोगमौ। एककार्यसमुद्युक्तौ कृष्णौ युद्धेऽपराजितौ ॥२-१८-२४॥

(Having seen Jarāsandha slain, (he) thought (of) the two Kṛṣṇas, headed by Bhīma, engaged in one task, undefeated in battle.)

ईशौ हि तौ महात्मानौ सर्वकार्यप्रवर्तने। धर्मार्थकामकार्याणां कार्याणामिव निग्रहे ॥२-१८-२५॥
īśau hi tau mahātmānau sarvakāryapravartane। dharmārthakāmakāryāṇāṃ kāryāṇāmiva nigrahe ॥2-18-25॥

(Indeed, those two great-souled lords (are) in the initiation of all actions; like (others) in the restraint of actions relating to dharma, artha, and kāma.)

कुरुभ्यः प्रस्थितास्ते तु मध्येन कुरुजाङ्गलम्। रम्यं पद्मसरो गत्वा कालकूटमतीत्य च ॥२-१८-२६॥
kurubhyaḥ prasthitās te tu madhyena kurujāṅgalam। ramyaṃ padmasaro gatvā kālakūṭamatītya ca ॥2-18-26॥

(From the Kurus, they departed, but through the middle of the Kuru-jāṅgala region, having gone to the pleasant lotus-lake, and having crossed Kālakūṭa.)
They departed from the Kurus, but passing through the middle of the Kuru-jāṅgala region, after reaching the beautiful lotus-lake and crossing Kālakūṭa. (2-18-26)
गण्डकीयां तथा शोणं सदानीरां तथैव च। एकपर्वतके नद्यः क्रमेणैत्य व्रजन्ति ते ॥२-१८-२७॥
gaṇḍakīyāṃ tathā śoṇaṃ sadānīrāṃ tathaiva ca। ekaparvatake nadyaḥ krameṇaitya vrajanti te ॥2-18-27॥

सन्तीर्य सरयूं रम्यां दृष्ट्वा पूर्वांश्च कोसलान्। अतीत्य जग्मुर्मिथिलां मालां चर्मण्वतीं नदीम् ॥२-१८-२८॥
santīrya sarayūṃ ramyāṃ dṛṣṭvā pūrvāṃś ca kosalān। atītya jagmur mithilāṃ mālāṃ carmaṇvatīṃ nadīm ॥2-18-28॥

(Having crossed the beautiful Sarayu, having seen the eastern Kosalans, having passed, they went to Mithila, Mala, and the river Carmanvati.)
After crossing the beautiful Sarayu and seeing the eastern Kosalans, they proceeded to Mithila, the region of Mala, and the river Carmanvati. (2-18-28)
उत्तीर्य गङ्गां शोणं च सर्वे ते प्राङ्मुखास्त्रयः। कुरवोरश्छदं जग्मुर्मागधं क्षेत्रमच्युताः ॥२-१८-२९॥
uttīrya gaṅgāṃ śoṇaṃ ca sarve te prāṅmukhās trayaḥ। kuravor aśchadaṃ jagmur māgadhaṃ kṣetram acyutāḥ॥2-18-29॥

(Having crossed the Gaṅgā and the Śoṇa, all those three, facing east, the Kurus, went to Aśchada, the Magadha region, the infallible ones.)

te śaśvad-godhanā-kīrṇam ambumantaṃ śubhadrumam। gorathaṃ girim āsādya dadṛśur māgadhaṃ puram ॥2-18-30॥
[ते (te) - they; शश्वत् (śaśvat) - always; गोधन (godhana) - herds of cows; आकीर्णम् (ākīrṇam) - filled with; अम्बुमन्तम् (ambumantam) - having water; शुभद्रुमम् (śubhadrumam) - with auspicious trees; गोरथम् (goratham) - bullock-cart; गिरिम् (girim) - mountain; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; मागधम् (māgadam) - of Magadha; पुरम् (puram) - city;]
(They, always filled with herds of cows, having water, with auspicious trees, having reached the mountain by bullock-cart, saw the city of Magadha.)
They, traveling by bullock-cart, passed through a region always filled with herds of cows, abundant in water and auspicious trees, and upon reaching the mountain, they saw the city of Magadha. (2-18-30)
