Pancharatra: Beating the drums, entering Girivraja through the back door, dressed as Snatakas, Krishna declares themselves as enemies in front of Jarasandha.

एष पार्थ महान्स्वादुः पशुमान्नित्यमम्बुमान्। निरामयः सुवेश्माढ्यो निवेशो मागधः शुभः ॥२-१९-१॥
eṣa pārtha mahānsvāduḥ paśumānnityamambumān। nirāmayaḥ suveśmāḍhyo niveśo māgadhaḥ śubhaḥ ॥2-19-1॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; महान् (mahān) - great; स्वादुः (svāduḥ) - delightful; पशुमान् (paśumān) - possessing cattle; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; अम्बुमान् (ambumān) - having water; निरामयः (nirāmayaḥ) - free from disease; सुवेश्माढ्यः (suveśmāḍhyaḥ) - rich in good houses; निवेशः (niveśaḥ) - settlement; मागधः (māgadhaḥ) - of Magadha; शुभः (śubhaḥ) - auspicious;]
(This, O son of Pṛthā, is great, delightful, possessing cattle, always having water, free from disease, rich in good houses, the settlement of Magadha, auspicious.)
O Pārtha, this settlement of Magadha is great, delightful, rich in cattle, always supplied with water, free from disease, abounding in fine houses, and auspicious. (2-19-1)
वैहारो विपुलः शैलो वराहो वृषभस्तथा। तथैवर्षिगिरिस्तात शुभाश्चैत्यकपञ्चमाः ॥२-१९-२॥
vaihāro vipulaḥ śailo varāho vṛṣabhas tathā। tathaiva ṛṣigiris tāta śubhāś caityakapañcamāḥ ॥2-19-2॥
[वैहारः (vaihāraḥ) - Vaihara; (name of a mountain); विपुलः (vipulaḥ) - Vipula; (name of a mountain); शैलः (śailaḥ) - Śaila; (mountain); वराहः (varāhaḥ) - Varāha; (name of a mountain); वृषभः (vṛṣabhaḥ) - Vṛṣabha; (name of a mountain); तथा (tathā) - likewise; also; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; similarly; ऋषिगिरिः (ṛṣigiriḥ) - Ṛṣigiri; (name of a mountain); तात (tāta) - O dear; O father; शुभाः (śubhāḥ) - auspicious; good; चैत्यकपञ्चमाः (caityakapañcamāḥ) - the five Caityaka (mountains);]
(Vaihara, Vipula, Śaila, Varāha, Vṛṣabha likewise; in the same way, Ṛṣigiri, O dear, auspicious, the five Caityaka (mountains).)
O dear, Vaihara, Vipula, Śaila, Varāha, Vṛṣabha, and similarly Ṛṣigiri, as well as the five auspicious Caityaka mountains. (2-19-2)
एते पञ्च महाशृङ्गाः पर्वताः शीतलद्रुमाः। रक्षन्तीवाभिसंहत्य संहताङ्गा गिरिव्रजम् ॥२-१९-३॥
ete pañca mahāśṛṅgāḥ parvatāḥ śītaladrumāḥ। rakṣantīvābhisaṃhatya saṃhatāṅgā girivrajam ॥2-19-3॥
[एते (ete) - these; पञ्च (pañca) - five; महाशृङ्गाः (mahāśṛṅgāḥ) - great-peaked; पर्वताः (parvatāḥ) - mountains; शीतलद्रुमाः (śītaladrumāḥ) - cool-treed; रक्षन्ति (rakṣanti) - protect; इव (iva) - as if; अभिसंहत्य (abhisaṃhatya) - having joined together; संहताङ्गाः (saṃhatāṅgāḥ) - with united bodies; गिरिव्रजम् (girivrajam) - mountain-enclosure;]
(These five great-peaked mountains with cool trees, as if protecting, having joined together, with united bodies, (protect) the mountain-enclosure.)
These five great-peaked mountains, covered with cool trees, seem to protect the mountain-enclosure by joining together with united bodies. (2-19-3)
पुष्पवेष्टितशाखाग्रैर्गन्धवद्भिर्मनोरमैः। निगूढा इव लोध्राणां वनैः कामिजनप्रियैः ॥२-१९-४॥
puṣpaveṣṭitaśākhāgrairgandhavadbhirmanoramaiḥ। nigūḍhā iva lodhrāṇāṃ vanaiḥ kāmijanapriyaiḥ ॥2-19-4॥
[पुष्प-वेष्टित-शाख-अग्रैः (puṣpa-veṣṭita-śākhā-agraiḥ) - with flower-wreathed branch-tips; गन्धवत्भिः (gandhavadbhiḥ) - with fragrant ones; मनोरमैः (manoramaiḥ) - with delightful ones; निगूढा (nigūḍhā) - hidden; इव (iva) - as if; लोढ्राणां (lodhrāṇām) - of lodhra trees; वनैः (vanaiḥ) - by forests; कामिजनप्रियैः (kāmijanapriyaiḥ) - dear to lovers;]
(With flower-wreathed branch-tips, with fragrant, delightful ones, as if hidden by the forests of lodhra trees, dear to lovers.)
With branch-tips wreathed in flowers, fragrant and delightful, as if concealed by the forests of lodhra trees beloved of lovers. (2-19-4)
शूद्रायां गौतमो यत्र महात्मा संशितव्रतः। औशीनर्यामजनयत्काक्षीवादीन्सुतानृषिः ॥२-१९-५॥

अङ्गवङ्गादयश्चैव राजानः सुमहाबलाः। गौतमक्षयमभ्येत्य रमन्ते स्म पुरार्जुन ॥२-१९-७॥
aṅgavaṅgādayaścaiva rājānaḥ sumahābalāḥ। gautamakṣayamabhyetya ramante sma purārjuna ॥2-19-7॥

(Aṅga, Vaṅga and others, and indeed kings of great might, having approached the abode of Gautama, used to enjoy (themselves), O Arjuna, formerly.)
O Arjuna, in ancient times, kings of great might such as Aṅga, Vaṅga and others, having come to the abode of Gautama, used to take delight there. (2-19-7)
वनराजीस्तु पश्येमाः प्रियालानां मनोरमाः। लोध्राणां च शुभाः पार्थ गौतमौकःसमीपजाः ॥२-१९-८॥
vanarājīs tu paśyemāḥ priyālānāṃ manoramāḥ। lodhrāṇāṃ ca śubhāḥ pārtha gautamaukhasamīpajāḥ ॥2-19-8॥
[वनराजीः (vanarājīḥ) - forest groves; तु (tu) - but; पश्येमाः (paśyemāḥ) - let us see; प्रियालानां (priyālānāṃ) - of priyāla trees; मनोरमाः (manoramāḥ) - charming; लोध्राणां (lodhrāṇāṃ) - of lodhra trees; च (ca) - and; शुभाः (śubhāḥ) - auspicious; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; गौतमौकःसमीपजाः (gautamaukhasamīpajāḥ) - grown near the hermitage of Gautama;]
(But let us see the charming forest groves of priyāla trees, and the auspicious lodhra trees, O son of Pṛthā, grown near the hermitage of Gautama.)
But, O Pārtha, let us look at these delightful groves of priyāla trees and the auspicious lodhra trees that grow near the hermitage of Gautama. (2-19-8)
अर्बुदः शक्रवापी च पन्नगौ शत्रुतापनौ। स्वस्तिकस्यालयश्चात्र मणिनागस्य चोत्तमः ॥२-१९-९॥
arbudaḥ śakravāpī ca pannagau śatrutāpanau। svastikasyālayas cātra maṇināgasya cottamaḥ ॥2-19-9॥
[अर्बुदः (arbudaḥ) - Arbuda; (name of a serpent); शक्रवापी (śakravāpī) - Śakravāpī; (name of a serpent); च (ca) - and; पन्नगौ (pannagau) - serpents; (dual); शत्रुतापनौ (śatrutāpanau) - tormentors of enemies; (dual); स्वस्तिकस्य (svastikasya) - of Svastika; (name of a serpent); आलयः (ālayaḥ) - abode; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; मणिनागस्य (maṇināgasya) - of Maṇināga; (name of a serpent); च (ca) - and; उत्तमः (uttamaḥ) - excellent;]
(Arbuda, Śakravāpī, and the two serpents, tormentors of enemies; here is the abode of Svastika, and also of Maṇināga, the excellent one.)

अपरिहार्या मेघानां मागधेयं मणेः कृते। कौशिको मणिमांश्चैव ववृधाते ह्यनुग्रहम् ॥२-१९-१०॥
aparihāryā meghānāṃ māgadheyaṃ maṇeḥ kṛte। kauśiko maṇimāṃścaiva vavṛdhāte hyanugraham ॥2-19-10॥
[अपरिहार्या (aparihāryā) - inevitable; unavoidable; मेघानाम् (meghānām) - of the clouds; मागधेयं (māgadheyaṃ) - from Magadha; belonging to Magadha; मणेः (maṇeḥ) - for the jewel; of the jewel; कृते (kṛte) - for the sake of; for; कौशिकः (kauśikaḥ) - Kauśika (name); मणिमान् (maṇimān) - Maṇimān (name); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; surely; ववृधाते (vavṛdhāte) - grew; increased; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; अनुग्रहम् (anugraham) - favor; grace;]
(Inevitable for the clouds was the Magadha jewel; for the sake of the jewel, Kauśika and Maṇimān indeed increased (their) favor.)

अर्थसिद्धिं त्वनपगां जरासन्धोऽभिमन्यते। वयमासादने तस्य दर्पमद्य निहन्म हि ॥२-१९-११॥
arthasiddhiṃ tvanapagāṃ jarāsandho'bhimanyate। vayam āsādane tasya darpam adya nihanma hi॥2-19-11॥
[अर्थसिद्धिं (arthasiddhiṃ) - attainment of purpose; त्व (tva) - you; अनपगां (anapagāṃ) - not lost; जरासन्धः (jarāsandhaḥ) - Jarāsandha; अभिमन्यते (abhimanyate) - thinks; वयम् (vayam) - we; आसादने (āsādane) - in the attainment; तस्य (tasya) - his; दर्पम् (darpam) - pride; अद्य (adya) - today; निहन्म (nihanma) - we shall destroy; हि (hi) - indeed;]
(Jarāsandha thinks that the attainment of purpose by you is not lost. We shall indeed destroy his pride today in the attainment.)
Jarāsandha believes your success is assured. Today, as we confront him, we shall surely destroy his pride. (2-19-11)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

एवमुक्त्वा ततः सर्वे भ्रातरो विपुलौजसः। वार्ष्णेयः पाण्डवेयौ च प्रतस्थुर्मागधं पुरम् ॥२-१९-१२॥
evam-uktvā tataḥ sarve bhrātaro vipula-ojasaḥ। vārṣṇeyaḥ pāṇḍaveyau ca pratastur māgadhaṃ puram ॥2-19-12॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वे (sarve) - all; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; विपुलौजसः (vipula-ojasaḥ) - of great energy; वार्ष्णेयः (vārṣṇeyaḥ) - the descendant of Vṛṣṇi (Kṛṣṇa); पाण्डवेयौ (pāṇḍaveyau) - the two sons of Pāṇḍu; च (ca) - and; प्रतस्थुः (pratastḥuḥ) - set out; मागधम् (māgadhaṃ) - to Magadha; पुरम् (puram) - city;]
(Thus having spoken, then all the brothers of great energy, the descendant of Vṛṣṇi, and the two sons of Pāṇḍu set out to the city of Magadha.)
Having thus spoken, all the powerful brothers, along with Kṛṣṇa (the descendant of Vṛṣṇi) and the two sons of Pāṇḍu, set out for the city of Magadha. (2-19-12)
तुष्टपुष्टजनोपेतं चातुर्वर्ण्यजनाकुलम्। स्फीतोत्सवमनाधृष्यमासेदुश्च गिरिव्रजम् ॥२-१९-१३॥
tuṣṭapuṣṭajanopetaṃ cāturvarṇyajanākulam। sphītotsavam anādhṛṣyam āseduś ca girivrajam ॥2-19-13॥
[तुष्ट (tuṣṭa) - content; पुष्ट (puṣṭa) - prosperous; जन (jana) - people; उपेतं (upetam) - endowed with; चातुर्वर्ण्य (cāturvarṇya) - of the four varṇas; जन (jana) - people; आकुलम् (ākulam) - crowded; स्फीत (sphīta) - thriving; उत्सवम् (utsavam) - festival; अनाधृष्यम् (anādhṛṣyam) - unassailable; आसेदुश् (āseduś) - approached; च (ca) - and; गिरिव्रजम् (girivrajam) - Girivraja;]
(Endowed with content and prosperous people, crowded with people of the four varṇas, thriving with festivals, unassailable, they approached Girivraja.)

तेऽथ द्वारमनासाद्य पुरस्य गिरिमुच्छ्रितम्। बार्हद्रथैः पूज्यमानं तथा नगरवासिभिः ॥२-१९-१४॥
te’tha dvāram anāsādya purasya girim ucchritam। bārhadrathaiḥ pūjyamānaṃ tathā nagaravāsibhiḥ ॥2-19-14॥
[ते (te) - they; अथ (atha) - then; द्वारम् (dvāram) - gate; अनासाद्य (anāsādya) - having approached; पुरस्य (purasya) - of the city; गिरिम् (girim) - mountain; उच्छ्रितम् (ucchritam) - towering; बार्हद्रथैः (bārhadrathaiḥ) - by the descendants of Barhadratha; पूज्यमानम् (pūjyamānam) - being worshipped; तथा (tathā) - also; नगरवासिभिः (nagaravāsibhiḥ) - by the city-dwellers;]
(They then, having approached the gate of the city, (saw) the towering mountain being worshipped by the Barhadrathas and also by the city-dwellers.)

यत्र माषादमृषभमाससाद बृहद्रथः। तं हत्वा माषनालाश्च तिस्रो भेरीरकारयत् ॥२-१९-१५॥
yatra māṣādamṛṣabhamāsasāda bṛhadrathaḥ। taṃ hatvā māṣanālāś ca tisro bherīrakārayat ॥2-19-15॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; माषात् (māṣāt) - from the black gram; अमृषभम् (amṛṣabham) - not a bull; (i.e., not a real bull) आससाद (āsasāda) - he approached; बृहद्रथः (bṛhadrathaḥ) - Bṛhadratha; तं (taṃ) - him; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; माषनालाः (māṣanālāḥ) - black gram stalks; च (ca) - and; तिस्रः (tisraḥ) - three (feminine); भेरीः (bherīḥ) - drums; अकारयत् (akārayat) - he caused to be made;]
(Where Bṛhadratha approached a non-bull made of black gram; having killed him, he caused three drums to be made from black gram stalks.)

(Having tied on the hide, by him they were established in his own city, where those life-giving drums were sprinkled with divine flower powder.)

(The enemies of Jarasandha, desiring to destroy, rushed together towards the very beautiful, shrine-adorned city of the Magadhas, as if (attacking) the head.)

(Firm, very broad peak, very great, ancient, worshipped, with garlands and always well-established.)

विपुलैर्बाहुभिर्वीरास्तेऽभिहत्याभ्यपातयन्। ततस्ते मागधं दृष्ट्वा पुरं प्रविविशुस्तदा ॥२-१९-१९॥
vipulair bāhubhir vīrās te'bhihatya abhyapātayan. tataḥ te māgadhaṃ dṛṣṭvā puraṃ praviviśus tadā ॥2-19-19॥

(The heroes, with mighty arms, having struck down (the enemy), caused them to fall. Then, having seen the city of Magadha, they entered the city at that time.)

etasminneva kāle tu jarāsandhaṃ samarcayan। paryagni kurvaṃśca nṛpaṃ dviradasthaṃ purohitāḥ ॥2-19-20॥

(But at this very time, worshipping Jarāsandha, the priests, making the king seated on an elephant, surrounded by fire, and (so on).)
But at that very moment, the priests, surrounding the king seated on an elephant with fire, were worshipping Jarāsandha. (2-19-20)
स्नातकव्रतिनस्ते तु बाहुशस्त्रा निरायुधाः। युयुत्सवः प्रविविशुर्जरासन्धेन भारत ॥२-१९-२१॥
snātakavratinaste tu bāhuśastrā nirāyudhāḥ। yuyutsavaḥ praviviśur jarāsandhena bhārata ॥2-19-21॥

(Those who have taken the vow of a graduate, they but, armed with weapons in their arms, unarmed, desiring to fight, entered by Jarasandha, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, those who had taken the vow of a graduate, though armed, entered unarmed, desiring to fight, by Jarasandha. (2-19-21)
भक्ष्यमाल्यापणानां च ददृशुः श्रियमुत्तमाम्। स्फीतां सर्वगुणोपेतां सर्वकामसमृद्धिनीम् ॥२-१९-२२॥
bhakṣyamālyāpaṇānāṃ ca dadṛśuḥ śriyam uttamām। sphītāṃ sarvaguṇopetāṃ sarvakāmasamṛddhinīm ॥2-19-22॥

(They saw the excellent prosperity of the shops of edibles and garlands, abundant, endowed with all virtues, fulfilling all desires.)
They saw the excellent prosperity of the shops selling food and garlands, which was abundant, endowed with all virtues, and fulfilled every desire. (2-19-22)
तां तु दृष्ट्वा समृद्धिं ते वीथ्यां तस्यां नरोत्तमाः। राजमार्गेण गच्छन्तः कृष्णभीमधनञ्जयाः ॥२-१९-२३॥
tāṃ tu dṛṣṭvā samṛddhiṃ te vīthyāṃ tasyāṃ narottamāḥ। rājamārgeṇa gacchantaḥ kṛṣṇabhīmadhanañjayāḥ ॥2-19-23॥

बलाद्गृहीत्वा माल्यानि मालाकारान्महाबलाः। विरागवसनाः सर्वे स्रग्विणो मृष्टकुण्डलाः ॥२-१९-२४॥
balād-gṛhītvā mālyāni mālākārān-mahābalāḥ। virāga-vasanāḥ sarve sragviṇaḥ mṛṣṭa-kuṇḍalāḥ ॥2-19-24॥
[बलात् (balāt) - by force; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; माल्यानि (mālyāni) - garlands; मालाकारान् (mālākārān) - the garland-makers; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - the very strong ones; विरागवसनाः (virāga-vasanāḥ) - wearing ochre garments; सर्वे (sarve) - all; स्रग्विणः (sragviṇaḥ) - adorned with garlands; मृष्टकुण्डलाः (mṛṣṭa-kuṇḍalāḥ) - with polished earrings;]
(By force having taken the garlands from the garland-makers, the very strong ones, all wearing ochre garments, adorned with garlands, with polished earrings.)
The very strong ones, all dressed in ochre garments, adorned with garlands and polished earrings, forcibly took the garlands from the garland-makers. (2-19-24)
निवेशनमथाजग्मुर्जरासन्धस्य धीमतः। गोवासमिव वीक्षन्तः सिंहा हैमवता यथा ॥२-१९-२५॥
niveśanam athā jagmur jarāsandhasya dhīmataḥ। govāsam iva vīkṣantaḥ siṃhā haimavatā yathā ॥2-19-25॥

(Then they went towards the residence of the wise Jarasandha, looking at the cow-shelter like Himalayan lions.)
Then they proceeded to the residence of the wise Jarasandha, glancing at the cow-shed like lions of the Himalayas. (2-19-25)
शैलस्तम्भनिभास्तेषां चन्दनागुरुभूषिताः। अशोभन्त महाराज बाहवो बाहुशालिनाम् ॥२-१९-२६॥
śailastambhanibhāsteṣāṃ candanāgurubhūṣitāḥ। aśobhanta mahārāja bāhavo bāhuśālinām ॥2-19-26॥
[शैल (śaila) - mountain; स्तम्भ (stambha) - pillar; निभाः (nibhāḥ) - resembling; तेषां (teṣām) - their; चन्दन (candana) - sandalwood; अगुरु (aguru) - aloeswood; भूषिताः (bhūṣitāḥ) - adorned; अशोभन्त (aśobhanta) - shone; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; बाहवः (bāhavaḥ) - arms; बाहुशालिनाम् (bāhuśālinām) - of the strong-armed;]
(Their arms, resembling mountain pillars, adorned with sandalwood and aloeswood, shone, O great king, the arms of the strong-armed.)
O great king, the arms of those strong-armed men, adorned with sandalwood and aloeswood and resembling mountain pillars, shone brilliantly. (2-19-26)
तान्दृष्ट्वा द्विरदप्रख्याञ्शालस्कन्धानिवोद्गतान्। व्यूढोरस्कान्मागधानां विस्मयः समजायत ॥२-१९-२७॥
tāndṛṣṭvā dviradaprakhyāñśālaskandhānivodgatān। vyūḍhoraskānmāgadhānāṃ vismayaḥ samajāyata ॥2-19-27॥

(Having seen them, resembling elephants, risen like trunks of śāla trees, broad-chested, of the Māgadhas, astonishment arose.)
When he saw those Māgadhas, broad-chested and risen like the trunks of śāla trees, resembling elephants, he was filled with astonishment. (2-19-27)
ते त्वतीत्य जनाकीर्णास्तिस्रः कक्ष्या नरर्षभाः। अहङ्कारेण राजानमुपतस्थुर्महाबलाः ॥२-१९-२८॥
te tvatītya janākīrṇās tisraḥ kakṣyā nararṣabhāḥ। ahaṅkāreṇa rājānam upatasthur mahābalāḥ ॥2-19-28॥

(They, having said 'you', the three enclosures crowded with people, bulls among men, with pride, approached the king, mighty.)
Those mighty bulls among men, having said 'you', passed through the three enclosures crowded with people and, filled with pride, approached the king. (2-19-28)
तान्पाद्यमधुपर्कार्हान्मानार्हान्सत्कृतिं गतान्। प्रत्युत्थाय जरासन्ध उपतस्थे यथाविधि ॥२-१९-२९॥
tānpādyamadhuparkārhānmānārhānsatkṛtiṃ gatān। pratyutthāya jarāsandha upatasthe yathāvidhi ॥2-19-29॥

उवाच चैतान्राजासौ स्वागतं वोऽस्त्विति प्रभुः। तस्य ह्येतद्व्रतं राजन्बभूव भुवि विश्रुतम् ॥२-१९-३०॥
uvāca caitānrājāsau svāgataṃ vo'stviti prabhuḥ। tasya hyetadvrataṃ rājanbabhūva bhuvi viśrutam ॥2-19-30॥

(He, the king, said to these, "Welcome to you," thus, O lord. Indeed, this vow of his, O king, became famous on earth.)
The king said to them, "Welcome to you," O lord. Indeed, this vow of his became renowned on earth. (2-19-30)
स्नातकान्ब्राह्मणान्प्राप्ताञ्श्रुत्वा स समितिञ्जयः। अप्यर्धरात्रे नृपतिः प्रत्युद्गच्छति भारत ॥२-१९-३१॥
snātakān brāhmaṇān prāptān śrutvā sa samitiñjayaḥ। apy ardharātre nṛpatiḥ pratyudgacchati bhārata ॥2-19-31॥
[स्नातकान् (snātakān) - those who have completed their Vedic studies; graduates; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - Brāhmaṇas; प्राप्तान् (prāptān) - arrived; reached; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; सः (saḥ) - he; समिति-ञ्जयः (samitiñjayaḥ) - Samitiñjaya (name); अपि (api) - even; अर्धरात्रे (ardharātre) - at midnight; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - the king; प्रत्युद्गच्छति (pratyudgacchati) - goes forth to meet; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Having heard that the Brāhmaṇas who have completed their Vedic studies had arrived, he, Samitiñjaya, even at midnight, the king goes forth to meet, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, having heard that the Brāhmaṇas who had completed their Vedic studies had arrived, King Samitiñjaya himself goes out to meet them, even if it is midnight. (2-19-31)
तांस्त्वपूर्वेण वेषेण दृष्ट्वा नृपतिसत्तमः। उपतस्थे जरासन्धो विस्मितश्चाभवत्तदा ॥२-१९-३२॥
tāṃstv apūrveṇa veṣeṇa dṛṣṭvā nṛpatisattamaḥ। upatasthe jarāsandho vismitaścābhavattadā ॥2-19-32॥

(Having seen them indeed in unprecedented dress, the best among kings, Jarāsandha, approached and then became astonished.)
When Jarāsandha, the foremost of kings, saw them in their unprecedented attire, he approached and was astonished at that time. (2-19-32)
ते तु दृष्ट्वैव राजानं जरासन्धं नरर्षभाः। इदमूचुरमित्रघ्नाः सर्वे भरतसत्तम ॥२-१९-३३॥
te tu dṛṣṭvaiva rājānaṃ jarāsandhaṃ nararṣabhāḥ। idamūcuramitraghnāḥ sarve bharatasattama ॥2-19-33॥
[ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; एव (eva) - indeed; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; जरासन्धम् (jarāsandham) - Jarāsandha; नरर्षभाः (nararṣabhāḥ) - bulls among men; इदम् (idam) - this; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; अमित्रघ्नाः (amitraghnāḥ) - destroyers of enemies; सर्वे (sarve) - all; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - best of the Bharatas;]
(They but having seen indeed the king Jarāsandha, bulls among men, this said, destroyers of enemies, all, best of the Bharatas.)
But when the bulls among men, destroyers of enemies, saw King Jarāsandha, all of them said this, O best of the Bharatas. (2-19-33)
स्वस्त्यस्तु कुशलं राजन्निति सर्वे व्यवस्थिताः। तं नृपं नृपशार्दूल विप्रैक्षन्त परस्परम् ॥२-१९-३४॥
svasty astu kuśalaṃ rājan n iti sarve vyavasthitāḥ। taṃ nṛpaṃ nṛpaśārdūla vipraikṣanta parasparam ॥2-19-34॥
[स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; कुशलं (kuśalam) - welfare; राजन् (rājan) - O king; इति (iti) - thus; सर्वे (sarve) - all; व्यवस्थिताः (vyavasthitāḥ) - remained; तं (tam) - him; नृपं (nṛpam) - king; नृपशार्दूल (nṛpaśārdūla) - tiger among kings; विप्रैक्षन्त (vipraikṣanta) - looked at; परस्परम् (parasparam) - at each other;]
(Well-being let there be, welfare, O king, thus all remained. Him, the king, tiger among kings, looked at each other.)
All remained saying, "Let there be well-being and welfare, O king." Then, O tiger among kings, they all looked at the king and at each other. (2-19-34)
तानब्रवीज्जरासन्धस्तदा यादवपाण्डवान्। आस्यतामिति राजेन्द्र ब्राह्मणच्छद्मसंवृतान् ॥२-१९-३५॥
tān abravīj jarāsandhas tadā yādava-pāṇḍavān। āsyatām iti rājendra brāhmaṇa-cchadma-saṃvṛtān ॥2-19-35॥
[तान् (tān) - them; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; जरासन्धः (jarāsandhaḥ) - Jarāsandha; तदा (tadā) - then; यादवपाण्डवान् (yādava-pāṇḍavān) - the Yādavas and Pāṇḍavas; आस्यताम् (āsyatām) - be seated; इति (iti) - thus; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; ब्राह्मणच्छद्मसंवृतान् (brāhmaṇa-cchadma-saṃvṛtān) - those disguised as brāhmaṇas;]
(Jarāsandha then said to them, the Yādavas and Pāṇḍavas, "Be seated," O king, to those disguised as brāhmaṇas.)
Jarāsandha then addressed the Yādavas and Pāṇḍavas, who were disguised as brāhmaṇas, saying, "Be seated," O king. (2-19-35)
अथोपविविशुः सर्वे त्रयस्ते पुरुषर्षभाः। सम्प्रदीप्तास्त्रयो लक्ष्म्या महाध्वर इवाग्नयः ॥२-१९-३६॥
athopaviviśuḥ sarve trayas te puruṣarṣabhāḥ। sampradīptās trayo lakṣmyā mahādhvara ivāgnayaḥ ॥2-19-36॥
[अथ (atha) - then; उपविविशुः (upaviviśuḥ) - sat down near; सर्वे (sarve) - all; त्रयः (trayaḥ) - three; ते (te) - they; पुरुषर्षभाः (puruṣarṣabhāḥ) - bulls among men; सम्प्रदीप्ताः (sampradīptāḥ) - blazing; त्रयः (trayaḥ) - three; लक्ष्म्या (lakṣmyā) - with splendor; महाध्वरे (mahādhvare) - in a great sacrifice; इव (iva) - like; अग्नयः (agnayaḥ) - fires;]
(Then all those three bulls among men sat down near; the three, blazing with splendor, like fires in a great sacrifice.)
Then all three of those eminent men sat down together; the three, radiant with splendor, resembled fires blazing in a great sacrifice. (2-19-36)
तानुवाच जरासन्धः सत्यसन्धो नराधिपः। विगर्हमाणः कौरव्य वेषग्रहणकारणात् ॥२-१९-३७॥
tānuvāca jarāsandhaḥ satyasaṃdho narādhipaḥ। vigarhamāṇaḥ kauravya veṣagrahaṇakāraṇāt ॥2-19-37॥

(To them said Jarāsandha, the truthful king, reproaching, O Kauravya, because of the reason of assuming disguise.)

न स्नातकव्रता विप्रा बहिर्माल्यानुलेपनाः। भवन्तीति नृलोकेऽस्मिन्विदितं मम सर्वशः ॥२-१९-३८॥
na snātakavratā viprā bahirmālyānulepanāḥ। bhavantīti nṛloke'smin viditaṃ mama sarvaśaḥ ॥2-19-38॥
[न (na) - not; स्नातकव्रता (snātakavratā) - having the vow of a graduate (from Vedic studies); विप्राः (viprāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; बहिः (bahiḥ) - outside; माल्य (mālya) - garlands; अनुलेपनाः (anulepanāḥ) - ointments; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; इति (iti) - thus; नृलोके (nṛloke) - in the world of men; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; विदितं (viditaṃ) - known; मम (mama) - to me; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way;]
(Not having the vow of a graduate, Brāhmaṇas, outside with garlands and ointments, become thus in the world of men in this, known to me in every way.)
It is well known to me in every way that Brāhmaṇas who do not observe the vow of a graduate, but go about outside adorned with garlands and ointments, become thus in this world of men. (2-19-38)
ते यूयं पुष्पवन्तश्च भुजैर्ज्याघातलक्षणैः। बिभ्रतः क्षात्रमोजश्च ब्राह्मण्यं प्रतिजानथ ॥२-१९-३९॥
te yūyaṃ puṣpavantaś ca bhujair jyāghāta-lakṣaṇaiḥ। bibhrataḥ kṣātram ojaś ca brāhmaṇyaṃ pratijānatha ॥2-19-39॥
[ते (te) - they; यूयम् (yūyam) - you; पुष्पवन्तः (puṣpavantaḥ) - having flowers; च (ca) - and; भुजैः (bhujaiḥ) - with arms; ज्या (jyā) - bowstring; घात (ghāta) - strike; लक्षणैः (lakṣaṇaiḥ) - with marks; बिभ्रतः (bibhrataḥ) - bearing; क्षात्रम् (kṣātram) - of kṣatriya (warrior); ओजः (ojaḥ) - strength; च (ca) - and; ब्राह्मण्यं (brāhmaṇyam) - brāhmaṇa-hood; प्रतिजानथ (pratijānatha) - you declare;]
(They, you, having flowers and with arms marked by the strike of the bowstring, bearing the strength of kṣatriyas and brāhmaṇa-hood, you declare.)
You, who are adorned with flowers and whose arms bear the marks of bowstring strikes, possess both the strength of warriors and the qualities of brāhmaṇas, and you declare this. (2-19-39)
एवं विरागवसना बहिर्माल्यानुलेपनाः। सत्यं वदत के यूयं सत्यं राजसु शोभते ॥२-१९-४०॥
evaṃ virāgavasanā bahirmālyānulepanāḥ। satyaṃ vadata ke yūyaṃ satyaṃ rājasu śobhate ॥2-19-40॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; विरागवसना (virāgavasanā) - wearing discolored garments; बहिः (bahiḥ) - outside; माल्य (mālya) - garlands; अनुलेपनाः (anulepanāḥ) - ointments; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; वदत (vadata) - speak; के (ke) - who; यूयम् (yūyam) - you (plural); सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; राजसु (rājasu) - among kings; शोभते (śobhate) - shines;]
(Thus, wearing discolored garments, outside with garlands and ointments, speak the truth—who are you? Truth shines among kings.)

चैत्यकं च गिरेः शृङ्गं भित्त्वा किमिव सद्म नः। अद्वारेण प्रविष्टाः स्थ निर्भया राजकिल्बिषात् ॥२-१९-४१॥
caityakaṃ ca gireḥ śṛṅgaṃ bhittvā kimiva sadma naḥ। advāreṇa praviṣṭāḥ stha nirbhayā rājakilbiṣāt ॥2-19-41॥
[चैत्यकं (caityakam) - sanctuary; shrine; च (ca) - and; गिरेः (gireḥ) - of the mountain; शृङ्गं (śṛṅgam) - peak; भित्त्वा (bhittvā) - having pierced; having broken through; किमिव (kim iva) - what like; as if what; सद्म (sadma) - house; abode; नः (naḥ) - our; अद्वारेण (advāreṇa) - by the doorless way; without a door; प्रविष्टाः (praviṣṭāḥ) - entered; स्थ (stha) - you are; you stand; निर्भया (nirbhayāḥ) - fearless; राजकिल्बिषात् (rājakilbiṣāt) - from the king's sin; from royal crime;]
(Sanctuary and the mountain's peak having pierced, as if what house of ours, by the doorless way you have entered, you are fearless from the king's sin.)
Having pierced the sanctuary and the mountain peak, what is this house of ours that you have entered by a doorless way, standing here fearless of the king's punishment? (2-19-41)
कर्म चैतद्विलिङ्गस्य किं वाद्य प्रसमीक्षितम्। वदध्वं वाचि वीर्यं च ब्राह्मणस्य विशेषतः ॥२-१९-४२॥
karma caitadviliṅgasya kiṃ vādya prasamīkṣitam। vadadhvaṃ vāci vīryaṃ ca brāhmaṇasya viśeṣataḥ ॥2-19-42॥
[कर्म (karma) - action; च (ca) - and; एतद् (etad) - this; विलिङ्गस्य (viliṅgasya) - of the optative mood; किम् (kim) - what; वाद्य (vādya) - should be said; प्रसमीक्षितम् (prasamīkṣitam) - considered; वदध्वम् (vadadhvam) - you all speak; वाचि (vāci) - in speech; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - strength; च (ca) - and; ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of the Brāhmaṇa; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially;]
(Action and this of the optative mood, what should be said, considered? You all speak, in speech, strength and of the Brāhmaṇa especially.)
What is to be said about the action in the optative mood, and what should be considered? Speak, for the strength of a Brāhmaṇa lies especially in speech. (2-19-42)
एवं च मामुपस्थाय कस्माच्च विधिनार्हणाम्। प्रणीतां नो न गृह्णीत कार्यं किं चास्मदागमे ॥२-१९-४३॥
evaṃ ca mām-upasthāya kasmāc ca vidhinārhaṇām | praṇītāṃ no na gṛhṇīta kāryaṃ kiṃ cāsmad-āgame ||2-19-43||
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; उपस्थाय (upasthāya) - having approached; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; च (ca) - and; विधिना (vidhinā) - by the rule; अर्हणाम् (arhaṇām) - of worship; प्रणीतां (praṇītāṃ) - prescribed; नः (naḥ) - by us; न (na) - not; गृह्णीत (gṛhṇīta) - should accept; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - action; किं (kiṃ) - what; च (ca) - and; अस्मदागमे (asmad-āgame) - in our presence;]
(Thus and having approached me, why and by the rule of worship prescribed by us, should (he) not accept the action? What and in our presence?)

एवमुक्तस्ततः कृष्णः प्रत्युवाच महामनाः। स्निग्धगम्भीरया वाचा वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः ॥२-१९-४४॥
evam-uktas-tataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ pratyuvāca mahāmanāḥ। snigdha-gambhīrayā vācā vākyaṃ vākyaviśāradaḥ ॥2-19-44॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded; स्निग्धगम्भीरया (snigdha-gambhīrayā) - with affectionate and deep; वाचा (vācā) - voice; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - words; वाक्यविशारदः (vākyaviśāradaḥ) - expert in speech;]
(Thus having been spoken, then Kṛṣṇa, great-minded, replied with affectionate and deep voice, words, expert in speech.)

स्नातकव्रतिनो राजन्ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया विशः। विशेषनियमाश्चैषामविशेषाश्च सन्त्युत ॥२-१९-४५॥
snātakavratino rājanbrāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyā viśaḥ। viśeṣaniyamāś caiṣām aviśeṣāś ca santy uta ॥2-19-45॥
[स्नातकव्रतिनः (snātakavratinaḥ) - those observing the vow of a graduate; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - Kṣatriyas; विशः (viśaḥ) - Vaiśyas; विशेषनियमाः (viśeṣaniyamāḥ) - special rules; च (ca) - and; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; अविशेषाः (aviśeṣāḥ) - general rules; च (ca) - and; सन्ति (santi) - exist; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Those observing the vow of a graduate, O king, Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas—special rules and general rules of these indeed exist.)
O king, for Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, and Vaiśyas who have undertaken the vow of a graduate, there are both special and general rules that apply to them. (2-19-45)
विशेषवांश्च सततं क्षत्रियः श्रियमर्छति। पुष्पवत्सु ध्रुवा श्रीश्च पुष्पवन्तस्ततो वयम् ॥२-१९-४६॥
viśeṣavāṃś ca satataṃ kṣatriyaḥ śriyam arcchati। puṣpavatsu dhruvā śrīś ca puṣpavantas tato vayam ॥2-19-46॥
[विशेषवान् (viśeṣavān) - possessed of distinction; च (ca) - and; सततम् (satatam) - always; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - a Kṣatriya; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; अर्छति (arcchati) - attains; पुष्पवत्सु (puṣpavatsu) - among those with flowers; ध्रुवा (dhruvā) - certain; श्रीः (śrīḥ) - prosperity; च (ca) - and; पुष्पवन्तः (puṣpavantaḥ) - those possessing flowers; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(A Kṣatriya possessed of distinction always attains prosperity. Among those with flowers, prosperity is certain, and therefore, we are those possessing flowers.)
A distinguished Kṣatriya always attains prosperity. Among those who have flowers, prosperity is assured, and thus, we are those who possess flowers. (2-19-46)
क्षत्रियो बाहुवीर्यस्तु न तथा वाक्यवीर्यवान्। अप्रगल्भं वचस्तस्य तस्माद्बार्हद्रथे स्मृतम् ॥२-१९-४७॥
kṣatriyo bāhuvīryas tu na tathā vākyavīryavān। apragalbhaṃ vacas tasya tasmād bārhadrathe smṛtam ॥2-19-47॥
[क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - warrior; बाहु-वीर्यः (bāhu-vīryaḥ) - of arm-strength; तु (tu) - but; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - so; वाक्य-वीर्यवान् (vākya-vīryavān) - of speech-strength; अप्रगल्भं (apragalbham) - not-bold; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; तस्य (tasya) - his; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; बार्हद्रथे (bārhadrathe) - in the Bhārata (epic); स्मृतम् (smṛtam) - is remembered;]
(The warrior is of arm-strength, but not so one of speech-strength. His speech is not bold; therefore, in the Bhārata, it is remembered thus.)
A warrior is known for his physical strength, but not so much for the strength of his words. If his speech is not bold, therefore, in the Bhārata, it is remembered in this way. (2-19-47)
स्ववीर्यं क्षत्रियाणां च बाह्वोर्धाता न्यवेशयत्। तद्दिदृक्षसि चेद्राजन्द्रष्टास्यद्य न संशयः ॥२-१९-४८॥
svavīryaṃ kṣatriyāṇāṃ ca bāhvordhātā nyaveśayat। taddidṛkṣasi cedrājandraṣṭāsyadya na saṃśayaḥ ॥2-19-48॥
[स्व (sva) - own; वीर्यं (vīryam) - strength; क्षत्रियाणां (kṣatriyāṇām) - of the kṣatriyas; च (ca) - and; बाह्वोः (bāhvoḥ) - in the arms; धाता (dhātā) - the creator; न्यवेशयत् (nyaveśayat) - placed; तत् (tat) - that; दिदृक्षसि (didṛkṣasi) - you wish to see; चेत् (cet) - if; राजन् (rājan) - O king; द्रष्टा (draṣṭā) - the seer; अस्य (asya) - of this; अद्य (adya) - today; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(The creator placed the own strength of the kṣatriyas in the arms. If you wish to see that, O king, today you will see it, no doubt.)
The creator placed the kṣatriyas' own strength in their arms. If you wish to see that, O king, you will see it today without any doubt. (2-19-48)
अद्वारेण रिपोर्गेहं द्वारेण सुहृदो गृहम्। प्रविशन्ति सदा सन्तो द्वारं नो वर्जितं ततः ॥२-१९-४९॥
advāreṇa riporgehaṃ dvāreṇa suhṛdo gṛham। praviśanti sadā santo dvāraṃ no varjitaṃ tataḥ ॥2-19-49॥
[अद्वारेण (advāreṇa) - by the doorless; रिपोः (ripoḥ) - of the enemy; गेहम् (geham) - house; द्वारेण (dvāreṇa) - by the door; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - of the friend; गृहम् (gṛham) - house; प्रविशन्ति (praviśanti) - enter; सदा (sadā) - always; सन्तः (santaḥ) - the good; द्वारम् (dvāram) - door; नः (naḥ) - not; वर्जितम् (varjitam) - excluded; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore;]
(By the doorless, the enemy's house; by the door, the friend's house. The good always enter; the door is not excluded, therefore.)
The enemy enters a house without a door, while a friend enters through the door. Good people always enter through the door; therefore, the door should not be excluded. (2-19-49)
कार्यवन्तो गृहानेत्य शत्रुतो नार्हणां वयम्। प्रतिगृह्णीम तद्विद्धि एतन्नः शाश्वतं व्रतम् ॥२-१९-५०॥
kāryavanto gṛhānetya śatruto nārhaṇāṃ vayam। pratigṛhṇīma tadviddhi etannaḥ śāśvataṃ vratam ॥2-19-50॥
[कार्यवन्तः (kāryavantaḥ) - having duties; endowed with action; गृहान् (gṛhān) - houses; homes; एत्य (etya) - having come; after coming; शत्रुतः (śatrutaḥ) - from enemies; as enemies; न (na) - not; अर्हणाम् (arhaṇām) - of those worthy of honor; of the deserving; वयम् (vayam) - we; प्रतिगृह्णीम (pratigṛhṇīma) - we accept; we receive; तत् (tat) - that; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; understand; एतत् (etat) - this; नः (naḥ) - our; शाश्वतम् (śāśvatam) - eternal; perpetual; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; resolve;]
(Having duties, having come to the houses, as enemies, not of the worthy of honor, we accept; know that this is our eternal vow.)
We, who have duties, having come to the houses as enemies, do not accept the offerings of those worthy of honor; know that this is our eternal vow. (2-19-50)
