Pancharatra: The battle between Jarasandha and Bheema.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततस्तं निश्चितात्मानं युद्धाय यदुनन्दनः। उवाच वाग्मी राजानं जरासन्धमधोक्षजः ॥२-२१-१॥
tatastaṃ niścitātmānaṃ yuddhāya yadunandanaḥ। uvāca vāgmī rājānaṃ jarāsandhamadhokṣajaḥ ॥2-21-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तं (taṃ) - him; निश्चितात्मानम् (niścitātmānam) - one with resolved mind; युद्धाय (yuddhāya) - for battle; यदुनन्दनः (yadunandanaḥ) - descendant of Yadu; उवाच (uvāca) - said; वाग्मी (vāgmī) - eloquent; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; जरासन्धम् (jarāsandham) - Jarāsandha; अधोक्षजः (adhokṣajaḥ) - the transcendent one;]
(Then the descendant of Yadu, with resolved mind for battle, the eloquent Adhokṣaja, said to King Jarāsandha.)
Then Adhokṣaja, the eloquent descendant of Yadu, firmly resolved for battle, spoke to King Jarāsandha. (2-21-1)
त्रयाणां केन ते राजन्योद्धुं वितरते मनः। अस्मदन्यतमेनेह सज्जीभवतु को युधि ॥२-२१-२॥
trayāṇāṃ kena te rājanyo ddhuṃ vitarate manaḥ। asmadanyatameneha sajjībhavatu ko yudhi ॥2-21-2॥
[त्रयाणां (trayāṇām) - of the three; केन (kena) - by whom; ते (te) - your; राजन् (rājan) - O king; योद्धुम् (yoddhum) - to fight; वितरते (vitarate) - extends; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; अस्मदन्यतमेन (asmadanyatamena) - by any one of us; इह (iha) - here; सज्जीभवतु (sajjībhavatu) - let be ready; कः (kaḥ) - who; युधि (yudhi) - in battle;]
(Of the three, by whom, O king, does your mind extend to fight? Let any one of us here be ready; who (will be) in battle?)
O king, among the three of us, to whom does your mind incline to fight? Let any one of us here be prepared; who will it be in battle? (2-21-2)
एवमुक्तः स कृष्णेन युद्धं वव्रे महाद्युतिः। जरासन्धस्ततो राजन्भीमसेनेन मागधः ॥२-२१-३॥
evam-uktaḥ sa kṛṣṇena yuddhaṃ vavre mahādyutiḥ। jarāsandhas-tato rājan-bhīmasenena māgadhaḥ ॥2-21-3॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; सः (saḥ) - he; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; वव्रे (vavre) - chose; महाद्युतिः (mahādyutiḥ) - the greatly resplendent one; जरासन्धः (jarāsandhaḥ) - Jarāsandha; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhīmasena; मागधः (māgadhaḥ) - the king of Magadha;]
(Thus having been addressed by Kṛṣṇa, he, the greatly resplendent Jarāsandha, then, O king, chose battle with Bhīmasena, the king of Magadha.)
O king, thus addressed by Kṛṣṇa, the greatly resplendent Jarāsandha, king of Magadha, then chose to fight with Bhīmasena. (2-21-3)
धारयन्नगदान्मुख्यान्निर्वृतीर्वेदनानि च। उपतस्थे जरासन्धं युयुत्सुं वै पुरोहितः ॥२-२१-४॥
dhārayann agadān mukhyān nirvṛtīr vedanāni ca। upatasthe jarāsandhaṃ yuyutsuṃ vai purohitaḥ ॥2-21-4॥
[धारयन् (dhārayan) - bearing; अगदान् (agadān) - medicines; मुख्यान् (mukhyān) - principal; निर्वृतीः (nirvṛtīḥ) - reliefs; वेदनानि (vedanāni) - pains; च (ca) - and; उपतस्थे (upatasthe) - approached; जरासन्धम् (jarāsandham) - Jarāsandha; युयुत्सुम् (yuyutsum) - desiring to fight; वै (vai) - indeed; पुरोहितः (purohitaḥ) - the priest;]
(Bearing principal medicines, reliefs for pains and so on, the priest indeed approached Jarāsandha, who was desiring to fight.)
The priest, carrying the chief medicines and remedies for pains, approached Jarāsandha, who was eager for battle. (2-21-4)
कृतस्वस्त्ययनो विद्वान्ब्राह्मणेन यशस्विना। समनह्यज्जरासन्धः क्षत्रधर्ममनुव्रतः ॥२-२१-५॥
kṛtasvastyayano vidvān brāhmaṇena yaśasvinā। samanahyaj jarāsandhaḥ kṣatradharmam anuvrataḥ ॥2-21-5॥
[कृत (kṛta) - performed; स्वस्त्ययनः (svastyayanaḥ) - auspicious rites; विद्वान् (vidvān) - wise; ब्राह्मणेन (brāhmaṇena) - by the Brāhmaṇa; यशस्विना (yaśasvinā) - illustrious; समनह्यत् (samanahyat) - was yoked; जरासन्धः (jarāsandhaḥ) - Jarāsandha; क्षत्रधर्मम् (kṣatradharmam) - the duty of a kṣatriya; अनुव्रतः (anuvrataḥ) - devoted to;]
(Having performed auspicious rites, the wise and illustrious Jarāsandha was yoked by the Brāhmaṇa, devoted to the duty of a kṣatriya.)
After performing auspicious rites, the wise and illustrious Jarāsandha, devoted to the duty of a kṣatriya, was yoked by the Brāhmaṇa. (2-21-5)
अवमुच्य किरीटं स केशान्समनुमृज्य च। उदतिष्ठज्जरासन्धो वेलातिग इवार्णवः ॥२-२१-६॥
avamucya kirīṭaṃ sa keśān samanumṛjya ca। udatiṣṭhaj jarāsandho velātiga ivārṇavaḥ ॥2-21-6॥
[अवमुच्य (avamucya) - having removed; (from ava-√muc) किरीटं (kirīṭam) - crown; (headgear; kirīṭa) स (sa) - he; केशान् (keśān) - hair; समनुमृज्य (samanumṛjya) - having wiped together; (sam-anu-√mṛj) च (ca) - and; उदतिष्ठत् (udatiṣṭhat) - rose up; (ud-√sthā) जरासन्धः (jarāsandhaḥ) - Jarāsandha; (proper name) वेलातिगः (velātigaḥ) - one who crosses the shore; (velā-atiga) इव (iva) - like; as; अर्णवः (arṇavaḥ) - ocean; sea;]
(Having removed the crown, he, having wiped his hair together, Jarāsandha rose up like an ocean crossing the shore.)
Jarāsandha took off his crown, wiped his hair, and rose up like an ocean crossing its shore. (2-21-6)
उवाच मतिमान्राजा भीमं भीमपराक्रमम्। भीम योत्स्ये त्वया सार्धं श्रेयसा निर्जितं वरम् ॥२-२१-७॥
uvāca matimān rājā bhīmaṃ bhīma-parākramam। bhīma yotsye tvayā sārdhaṃ śreyasā nirjitaṃ varam ॥2-21-7॥
[उवाच (uvāca) - said; मतिमान् (matimān) - wise; राजा (rājā) - king; भीमम् (bhīmam) - Bhīma; भीमपराक्रमम् (bhīma-parākramam) - of terrible prowess; भीम (bhīma) - O Bhīma; योत्स्ये (yotsye) - I will fight; त्वया (tvayā) - with you; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together; श्रेयसा (śreyasā) - by excellence; निर्जितम् (nirjitam) - conquered; वरम् (varam) - boon;]
(The wise king said to Bhīma of terrible prowess: "O Bhīma, I will fight together with you; by excellence, the boon has been conquered.")
The wise king said to Bhīma, who was of terrible prowess: "O Bhīma, I will fight alongside you; by virtue, the boon has been won." (2-21-7)
एवमुक्त्वा जरासन्धो भीमसेनमरिंदमः। प्रत्युद्ययौ महातेजाः शक्रं बलिरिवासुरः ॥२-२१-८॥
evam-uktvā jarāsandho bhīmasenam ariṃdamaḥ। pratyudyayau mahātejāḥ śakraṃ balir ivāsuraḥ ॥2-21-8॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; जरासन्धः (jarāsandhaḥ) - Jarāsandha; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - Bhīmasena; अरिंदमः (ariṃdamaḥ) - destroyer of enemies; प्रत्युद्ययौ (pratyudyayau) - approached; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great energy; शक्रम् (śakram) - Indra; बलिः (baliḥ) - Bali; इव (iva) - like; असुरः (asuraḥ) - the Asura;]
(Thus having spoken, Jarāsandha, the destroyer of enemies, of great energy, approached Bhīmasena, like the Asura Bali approached Indra.)
Having said this, Jarāsandha, full of great energy and a destroyer of enemies, advanced towards Bhīmasena, just as the Asura Bali once advanced towards Indra. (2-21-8)
ततः संमन्त्र्य कृष्णेन कृतस्वस्त्ययनो बली। भीमसेनो जरासन्धमाससाद युयुत्सया ॥२-२१-९॥
tataḥ sanmantrya kṛṣṇena kṛtasvastyayano balī। bhīmaseno jarāsandhamāsasāda yuyutsayā ॥2-21-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; संमन्त्र्य (sanmantrya) - having consulted; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; कृतस्वस्त्ययनः (kṛtasvastyayanaḥ) - having performed auspicious rites; बली (balī) - the strong one; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; जरासन्धम् (jarāsandham) - Jarāsandha; आससाद (āsasāda) - approached; युयुत्सया (yuyutsayā) - with desire to fight;]
(Then, having consulted with Kṛṣṇa, having performed auspicious rites, the strong Bhīmasena approached Jarāsandha with desire to fight.)
Then, after consulting with Kṛṣṇa and performing auspicious rites, the mighty Bhīmasena approached Jarāsandha, eager for battle. (2-21-9)
ततस्तौ नरशार्दूलौ बाहुशस्त्रौ समीयतुः। वीरौ परमसंहृष्टावन्योन्यजयकाङ्क्षिणौ ॥२-२१-१०॥
tatastau naraśārdūlau bāhuśastrau samīyatuḥ। vīrau paramasaṃhṛṣṭāv anyonyajayakāṅkṣiṇau ॥2-21-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तौ (tau) - those two; नरशार्दूलौ (naraśārdūlau) - tigers among men; बाहुशस्त्रौ (bāhuśastrau) - armed with weapons in their arms; समीयतुः (samīyatuḥ) - approached each other; वीरौ (vīrau) - heroes; परमसंहृष्टौ (paramasaṃhṛṣṭau) - exceedingly delighted; अन्योन्यजयकाङ्क्षिणौ (anyonyajayakāṅkṣiṇau) - desiring victory over each other;]
(Then those two tigers among men, armed with weapons in their arms, approached each other, heroes, exceedingly delighted, desiring victory over each other.)
Then those two heroes, tigers among men, armed with weapons, joyfully approached each other, each eager for victory over the other. (2-21-10)
तयोरथ भुजाघातान्निग्रहप्रग्रहात्तथा। आसीत्सुभीमसंह्रादो वज्रपर्वतयोरिव ॥२-२१-११॥
tayoratha bhujāghātānnigrahapragrahāttathā। āsītsubhīmasaṃhrādo vajraparvatayoriva ॥2-21-11॥
[तयोः (tayoh) - of those two; अथ (atha) - then; भुजाघातात् (bhujāghātāt) - from the striking of arms; निग्रहप्रग्रहात् (nigraha-pragrahāt) - from restraint and counter-restraint; तथा (tathā) - thus; आसीत् (āsīt) - there was; सुभीमसंह्रादः (subhīma-saṃhrādaḥ) - very terrible sound; वज्रपर्वतयोः (vajra-parvatayoḥ) - of two thunderbolt-like mountains; इव (iva) - like;]
(Of those two, then from the striking of arms, from restraint and counter-restraint, thus, there was a very terrible sound, like of two thunderbolt-like mountains.)
Then, from the striking of the arms and the acts of restraint and counter-restraint between those two, there arose a very terrible sound, like that of two mountains of thunderbolts. (2-21-11)
उभौ परमसंहृष्टौ बलेनातिबलावुभौ। अन्योन्यस्यान्तरं प्रेप्सू परस्परजयैषिणौ ॥२-२१-१२॥
ubhau paramasaṃhṛṣṭau balenātibalāvubhau। anyonyasyāntaraṃ prepsū parasparajayaiṣiṇau ॥2-21-12॥
[उभौ (ubhau) - both; परमसंहृष्टौ (paramasaṃhṛṣṭau) - exceedingly delighted; बलेन (balena) - by strength; अतिबलौ (atibalau) - very strong; उभौ (ubhau) - both; अन्योन्यस्य (anyonyasya) - of each other; अन्तरम् (antaram) - difference; प्रेप्सू (prepsū) - desiring to obtain; परस्परजयैषिणौ (parasparajayaiṣiṇau) - seeking mutual victory;]
(Both, exceedingly delighted, both very strong by strength, desiring to obtain the difference of each other, seeking mutual victory.)
Both were exceedingly delighted and very strong, each desiring to surpass the other and seeking mutual victory. (2-21-12)
तद्भीममुत्सार्य जनं युद्धमासीदुपह्वरे। बलिनोः संयुगे राजन्वृत्रवासवयोरिव ॥२-२१-१३॥
tadbhīmamutsārya janaṃ yuddham āsīd upahvare। balinoḥ saṃyuge rājan vṛtravāsavayor iva ॥2-21-13॥
[तत् (tat) - that; भीमम् (bhīmam) - terrible; उत्सार्य (utsārya) - having driven away; जनम् (janam) - people; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; उपह्वरे (upahvare) - in the valley; बलिनोः (balinoḥ) - of the strong (two); संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in the combat; राजन् (rājan) - O king; वृत्रवासवयोः (vṛtravāsavayoḥ) - of Vṛtra and Vāsava (Indra); इव (iva) - like;]
(That terrible, having driven away the people, battle was in the valley; of the strong (two), in the combat, O king, like (the battle) of Vṛtra and Vāsava (Indra);)
O king, after the people had been driven away, a terrible battle took place in the valley between the two mighty warriors, like the combat between Vṛtra and Indra. (2-21-13)
प्रकर्षणाकर्षणाभ्यामभ्याकर्षविकर्षणैः। आकर्षेतां तथान्योन्यं जानुभिश्चाभिजघ्नतुः ॥२-२१-१४॥
prakarṣaṇākarṣaṇābhyām abhyākarṣa vikarṣaṇaiḥ। ākarṣetāṃ tathānyonyaṃ jānubhiś cābhijaghnatuḥ ॥2-21-14॥
[प्रकर्षण (prakarṣaṇa) - by pulling forcibly; आकर्षणाभ्याम् (ākarṣaṇābhyām) - by two acts of drawing towards; अभि-आकर्ष-विकर्षणैः (abhi-ākarṣa-vikarṣaṇaiḥ) - by repeated, forward, and backward pulls; आकर्षेताम् (ākarṣetām) - they pulled; तथा (tathā) - thus; अन्योन्यम् (anyonyam) - each other; जानुभिः (jānubhiḥ) - with knees; च (ca) - and; अभिजघ्नतुः (abhijaghnatuḥ) - they struck;]
(By pulling forcibly, by two acts of drawing towards, by repeated, forward, and backward pulls, they pulled thus each other, and with knees they struck.)
They pulled each other back and forth with repeated forceful tugs, and struck each other with their knees. (2-21-14)
ततः शब्देन महता भर्त्सयन्तौ परस्परम्। पाषाणसङ्घातनिभैः प्रहारैरभिजघ्नतुः ॥२-२१-१५॥
tataḥ śabdena mahatā bhartsayantau parasparam। pāṣāṇasaṅghātanibhaiḥ prahārairabhijaghnatuḥ ॥2-21-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शब्देन (śabdena) - with sound; महता (mahatā) - great; भर्त्सयन्तौ (bhartsayantau) - reproaching; परस्परम् (parasparam) - each other; पाषाणसङ्घातनिभैः (pāṣāṇasaṅghātanibhaiḥ) - like masses of stone; प्रहारैः (prahāraiḥ) - with blows; अभिजघ्नतुः (abhijaghnatuḥ) - struck;]
(Then, with great sound, reproaching each other, with blows like masses of stone, they struck (each other).)
Then, making a great noise and reproaching each other, they struck one another with blows resembling masses of stone. (2-21-15)
व्यूढोरस्कौ दीर्घभुजौ नियुद्धकुशलावुभौ। बाहुभिः समसज्जेतामायसैः परिघैरिव ॥२-२१-१६॥
vyūḍhoraskau dīrghabhujau niyuddhakuśalāvubhau। bāhubhiḥ samasajjetām āyasaiḥ parighair iva ॥2-21-16॥
[व्यूढ (vyūḍha) - broad; (from vyuḍh, to expand;) उरस्कौ (uraskau) - chested (dual); (uras, chest;) दीर्घ (dīrgha) - long; (from dīrgh, long;) भुजौ (bhujau) - armed (dual); (bhuja, arm;) नियुद्ध (niyuddha) - combat; (from ni-yudh, to fight;) कुशलौ (kuśalau) - skilled (dual); (kuśala, skilled;) उभौ (ubhau) - both; (dual;) बाहुभिः (bāhubhiḥ) - with arms; (bāhu, arm; instrumental plural;) समसज्जेताम् (samasajjetām) - would be equally matched (dual); (sam + sajj, to be equipped; optative dual;) आयसैः (āyasaiḥ) - with iron; (āyasa, iron; instrumental plural;) परिघैः (parighaiḥ) - with clubs; (parigha, club; instrumental plural;) इव (iva) - like; (particle of comparison;]

कार्त्तिकस्य तु मासस्य प्रवृत्तं प्रथमेऽहनि। अनारतं दिवारात्रमविश्रान्तमवर्तत ॥२-२१-१७॥
kārttikasya tu māsasya pravṛttaṃ prathame'ahani। anārataṃ divārātramaviśrāntamavartata ॥2-21-17॥
[कार्त्तिकस्य (kārttikasya) - of Kārttika; (genitive case) तु (tu) - but; (emphatic particle) मासस्य (māsasya) - of the month; (genitive case) प्रवृत्तं (pravṛttam) - commenced; begun; प्रथमे (prathame) - on the first; (locative singular) अहनि (ahani) - day; (locative singular) अनारतं (anārataṃ) - unceasing; continuous; दिवारात्रम् (divārātram) - day and night; अविश्रान्तम् (aviśrāntam) - without rest; unceasing; अवर्तत (avartata) - continued; went on;]
(But at the beginning of the month of Kārttika, on the first day, it commenced and continued unceasingly day and night, without rest.)
But on the first day of the month of Kārttika, it began and went on without interruption, day and night, without any rest. (2-21-17)
तद्वृत्तं तु त्रयोदश्यां समवेतं महात्मनोः। चतुर्दश्यां निशायां तु निवृत्तो मागधः क्लमात् ॥२-२१-१८॥
tadvṛttaṃ tu trayodaśyāṃ samavetaṃ mahātmanoḥ। caturdaśyāṃ niśāyāṃ tu nivṛtto māgadhaḥ klamāt ॥2-21-18॥
[तत् (tat) - that; वृत्तम् (vṛttam) - event; occurrence; तु (tu) - but; indeed; त्रयोदश्याम् (trayodaśyām) - on the thirteenth (lunar day); समवेतम् (samavetam) - assembled; gathered; महात्मनोः (mahātmanoḥ) - of the great souls; चतुर्दश्याम् (caturdaśyām) - on the fourteenth (lunar day); निशायाम् (niśāyām) - at night; तु (tu) - but; indeed; निवृत्तः (nivṛttaḥ) - ceased; withdrawn; मागधः (māgadhaḥ) - the Māgadha (person); क्लमात् (klamāt) - from fatigue;]
(That event, indeed, on the thirteenth (lunar day), was assembled by the great souls; but on the night of the fourteenth (lunar day), the Māgadha (person) withdrew from fatigue.)
That event was assembled by the great souls on the thirteenth day; but on the night of the fourteenth, the Māgadha withdrew due to fatigue. (2-21-18)
तं राजानं तथा क्लान्तं दृष्ट्वा राजञ्जनार्दनः। उवाच भीमकर्माणं भीमं सम्बोधयन्निव ॥२-२१-१९॥
taṃ rājānaṃ tathā klāntaṃ dṛṣṭvā rājañjanārdanaḥ। uvāca bhīmakarmāṇaṃ bhīmaṃ sambodhayanniva ॥2-21-19॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; राजानं (rājānam) - king; तथा (tathā) - thus; क्लान्तं (klāntam) - wearied; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; राजन् (rājan) - O king; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa); उवाच (uvāca) - said; भीमकर्माणं (bhīmakarmāṇam) - of mighty deeds; भीमं (bhīmam) - Bhīma; सम्बोधयन् (sambodhayann) - awakening; इव (iva) - as if;]
(Having seen him, the king, thus wearied, O king, Janārdana said to Bhīma of mighty deeds, as if awakening him.)
O king, seeing the king so exhausted, Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa) spoke to Bhīma of mighty deeds, as if to rouse him. (2-21-19)
क्लान्तः शत्रुर्न कौन्तेय लभ्यः पीडयितुं रणे। पीड्यमानो हि कार्त्स्न्येन जह्याज्जीवितमात्मनः ॥२-२१-२०॥
klāntaḥ śatrur na kaunteya labhyaḥ pīḍayituṃ raṇe। pīḍyamāno hi kārtsnyena jahyāj jīvitam ātmanaḥ ॥2-21-20॥
[क्लान्तः (klāntaḥ) - exhausted; शत्रुः (śatruḥ) - enemy; न (na) - not; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; लभ्यः (labhyaḥ) - to be obtained; पीडयितुम् (pīḍayitum) - to oppress; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; पीड्यमानः (pīḍyamānaḥ) - being oppressed; हि (hi) - indeed; कार्त्स्न्येन (kārtsnyena) - entirely; जह्यात् (jahyāt) - should abandon; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself;]
(Exhausted enemy not, O son of Kunti, is to be obtained to oppress in battle. Being oppressed indeed entirely should abandon life of oneself.)
O son of Kunti, an exhausted enemy is not easily subdued in battle; one who is being completely oppressed should rather give up his own life. (2-21-20)
तस्मात्ते नैव कौन्तेय पीडनीयो नराधिपः। सममेतेन युध्यस्व बाहुभ्यां भरतर्षभ ॥२-२१-२१॥
tasmātte naiva kaunteya pīḍanīyo narādhipaḥ। samam etena yudhyasva bāhubhyāṃ bharatarṣabha ॥2-21-21॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; ते (te) - to you; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; पीडनीयः (pīḍanīyaḥ) - to be oppressed; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - king; समम् (samam) - equally; एतेन (etena) - by this; युध्यस्व (yudhyasva) - fight; बाहुभ्याम् (bāhubhyām) - with (your) arms; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(Therefore, to you, O son of Kunti, this king is not indeed to be oppressed; equally by this, fight with (your) arms, O bull among the Bharatas.)
Therefore, O son of Kunti, this king is not to be oppressed by you; fight equally with your arms, O best of the Bharatas. (2-21-21)
एवमुक्तः स कृष्णेन पाण्डवः परवीरहा। जरासन्धस्य तद्रन्ध्रं ज्ञात्वा चक्रे मतिं वधे ॥२-२१-२२॥
evam-uktaḥ sa kṛṣṇena pāṇḍavaḥ paravīrahā। jarāsandhasya tad randhraṃ jñātvā cakre matiṃ vadhe ॥2-21-22॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; स (sa) - he; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu; परवीरहा (paravīrahā) - destroyer of enemy heroes; जरासन्धस्य (jarāsandhasya) - of Jarāsandha; तत् (tat) - that; रन्ध्रं (randhraṃ) - weakness; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; चक्रे (cakre) - made; मतिं (matiṃ) - decision; वधे (vadhe) - for the killing;]
(Thus addressed, he, the son of Pāṇḍu, destroyer of enemy heroes, having known that weakness of Jarāsandha, made a decision for the killing.)
Thus, when addressed by Kṛṣṇa, the son of Pāṇḍu, destroyer of enemy heroes, having discerned that weakness of Jarāsandha, resolved upon his destruction. (2-21-22)
ततस्तमजितं जेतुं जरासन्धं वृकोदरः। संरभ्य बलिनां मुख्यो जग्राह कुरुनन्दनः ॥२-२१-२३॥
tatastam ajitaṃ jetuṃ jarāsandhaṃ vṛkodaraḥ। saṃrabhy balināṃ mukhyo jagrāha kurunandanaḥ ॥2-21-23॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तम् (tam) - him; अजितम् (ajitam) - unconquered; जेतुम् (jetum) - to conquer; जरासन्धम् (jarāsandham) - Jarāsandha; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara; संरभ्य (saṃrabhy) - having become excited; बलिनाम् (balinām) - of the strong; मुख्यः (mukhyaḥ) - chief; जग्राह (jagrāha) - seized; कुरुनन्दनः (kurunandanaḥ) - O joy of the Kurus;]
(Then Vṛkodara, the chief of the strong, having become excited, seized that unconquered Jarāsandha to conquer him, O joy of the Kurus.)
Then Vṛkodara, chief among the strong, excitedly seized the unconquered Jarāsandha in order to defeat him, O joy of the Kurus. (2-21-23)
