purastātkaraṇīyaṃ me na kṛtaṃ kāryamuttaram। vihvalāsmi kṛtānena karṣatā balinā balāt ॥2-62-1॥
[पुरस्तात् (purastāt) - before; previously; करणीयं (karaṇīyaṃ) - to be done; to be performed; मे (me) - by me; न (na) - not; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; कार्यं (kāryam) - task; duty; उत्तरम् (uttaram) - later; afterwards; विह्वला (vihvalā) - distressed; agitated; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; कृत (kṛta) - done; अनेन (anena) - by this; कर्षता (karṣatā) - dragging; pulling; बलिना (balinā) - by the strong; by force; बलात् (balāt) - by force; forcibly;]
(The task to be done before by me was not accomplished; the later duty (remains). I am distressed, having been dragged by this strong one by force.)

अभिवादं करोम्येषां गुरूणां कुरुसंसदि। न मे स्यादपराधोऽयं यदिदं न कृतं मया ॥२-६२-२॥
abhivādaṃ karomyeṣāṃ gurūṇāṃ kurusaṃsadi। na me syādaparādho'yaṃ yadidaṃ na kṛtaṃ mayā ॥2-62-2॥

svayaṃvare yāsmi nṛpairdṛṣṭā raṅge samāgataiḥ। na dṛṣṭapūrvā cānyatra sāhamadya sabhāṃ gatā ॥2-62-4॥

यां न मृष्यन्ति वातेन स्पृश्यमानां पुरा गृहे। स्पृश्यमानां सहन्तेऽद्य पाण्डवास्तां दुरात्मना ॥२-६२-६॥

(Whom not endure by the wind being touched formerly in the house, being touched endure today the Pāṇḍavas her by the evil-minded.)

मृष्यन्ते कुरवश्चेमे मन्ये कालस्य पर्ययम्। स्नुषां दुहितरं चैव क्लिश्यमानामनर्हतीम् ॥२-६२-७॥
mṛṣyante kuravaś ceme manye kālasya paryayam। snuṣāṃ duhitaraṃ caiva kliśyamānām anarhatīm ॥2-62-7॥
[मृष्यन्ते (mṛṣyante) - are being tolerated; (from √mṛṣ, to bear) कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; (elders of the Kuru dynasty) च (ca) - and; इमे (ime) - these; मन्ये (manye) - I think; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; पर्ययम् (paryayam) - change; (cycle, turn) स्नुषाम् (snuṣām) - daughter-in-law; दुहितरम् (duhitaram) - daughter; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; क्लिश्यमानाम् (kliśyamānām) - being afflicted; अनर्हतीम् (anarhatīm) - undeserving;]
(Are being tolerated the Kurus and these, I think, the change of time. The daughter-in-law and the daughter indeed, being afflicted, undeserving.)
I think these Kurus are enduring only because of the change of time. Both the daughter-in-law and the daughter, though suffering, do not deserve such hardship. (2-62-7)
किं त्वतः कृपणं भूयो यदहं स्त्री सती शुभा। सभामध्यं विगाहेऽद्य क्व नु धर्मो महीक्षिताम् ॥२-६२-८॥
kiṁ tvataḥ kṛpaṇaṁ bhūyo yadahaṁ strī satī śubhā। sabhāmadhyaṁ vigāhe'dya kva nu dharmo mahīkṣitām ॥2-62-8॥

(What from you is more wretched, that I, a woman, chaste, auspicious, today enter the midst of the assembly; where indeed is righteousness of the kings?)
What could be more wretched from you, that I, a chaste and auspicious woman, must today enter the midst of the assembly? Where indeed is the righteousness of the kings? (2-62-8)
धर्म्याः स्त्रियः सभां पूर्वं न नयन्तीति नः श्रुतम्। स नष्टः कौरवेयेषु पूर्वो धर्मः सनातनः ॥२-६२-९॥
dharmyāḥ striyaḥ sabhāṃ pūrvaṃ na nayantīti naḥ śrutam। sa naṣṭaḥ kauraveyeṣu pūrvo dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ ॥2-62-9॥
[धर्म्याः (dharmyāḥ) - righteous; in accordance with dharma; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; सभां (sabhām) - assembly; court; पूर्वं (pūrvam) - formerly; before; न (na) - not; नयन्ति (nayanti) - lead; bring; इति (iti) - thus; so; नः (naḥ) - to us; we have; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; सः (saḥ) - that; नष्टः (naṣṭaḥ) - lost; destroyed; कौरवेयेषु (kauraveyeṣu) - among the Kauravas; पूर्वः (pūrvaḥ) - former; earlier; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; righteousness; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; ancient;]
(Righteous women formerly did not lead to the assembly, thus we have heard. That former eternal dharma is lost among the Kauravas.)

kathaṁ hi bhāryā pāṇḍūnāṁ pārṣatasya svasā satī। vāsudevasya ca sakhī pārthivānāṁ sabhām iyām ॥2-62-10॥

How can the wife of the Pāṇḍavas, Draupadī, who is the chaste sister of the son of Pṛṣata and friend of Vāsudeva, enter the assembly of the kings? (2-62-10)
तामिमां धर्मराजस्य भार्यां सदृशवर्णजाम्। ब्रूत दासीमदासीं वा तत्करिष्यामि कौरवाः ॥२-६२-११॥
tām imāṃ dharmarājasya bhāryāṃ sadṛśavarṇajām। brūta dāsīm adāsīṃ vā tat kariṣyāmi kauravāḥ ॥2-62-11॥

O Kauravas, tell me whether this wife of Dharmarāja, who is of similar complexion, is a slave-woman or not; I will do that.
अयं हि मां दृढं क्षुद्रः कौरवाणां यशोहरः। क्लिश्नाति नाहं तत्सोढुं चिरं शक्ष्यामि कौरवाः ॥२-६२-१२॥
ayaṃ hi māṃ dṛḍhaṃ kṣudraḥ kauravāṇāṃ yaśoharaḥ। kliśnāti nāhaṃ tatsoḍhuṃ ciraṃ śakṣyāmi kauravāḥ ॥2-62-12॥

jitāṃ vāpy ajitāṃ vāpi manyadhvaṃ vā yathā nṛpāḥ। tathā pratyuktam icchāmi tat kariṣyāmi kauravāḥ ॥2-62-13॥

(Conquered or even unconquered or as you may think, O kings, so replied I wish, that I will do, O Kauravas.)
Whether you consider us conquered or unconquered, O kings, I wish to reply in the same way; that I will do, O Kauravas. (2-62-13)

उक्तवानस्मि कल्याणि धर्मस्य तु परां गतिम्। लोके न शक्यते गन्तुमपि विप्रैर्महात्मभिः ॥२-६२-१४॥
uktavānasmi kalyāṇi dharmasya tu parāṃ gatim। loke na śakyate gantumapi viprairmahātmabhiḥ ॥2-62-14॥
[उक्तवान् (uktavān) - spoken; said; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; तु (tu) - but; पराम् (parām) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - state; path; लोके (loke) - in the world; न (na) - not; शक्यते (śakyate) - is possible; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to attain; to go; अपि (api) - even; विप्रैः (vipraiḥ) - by the Brāhmaṇas; महात्मभिः (mahātmabhiḥ) - by the great-souled ones;]
(I have spoken, O auspicious one, but the supreme state of dharma in the world is not possible to attain even by Brāhmaṇas who are great-souled.)
I have told you, O auspicious one, that even the Brāhmaṇas of great soul cannot attain the supreme state of dharma in this world. (2-62-14)
बलवांस्तु यथा धर्मं लोके पश्यति पूरुषः। स धर्मो धर्मवेलायां भवत्यभिहितः परैः ॥२-६२-१५॥
balavāṃstu yathā dharmaṃ loke paśyati pūruṣaḥ। sa dharmo dharmavelāyāṃ bhavatyabhihitaḥ paraiḥ ॥2-62-15॥
[बलवान् (balavān) - strong; powerful; तु (tu) - but; यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - dharma; righteousness; लोके (loke) - in the world; पश्यति (paśyati) - sees; पूरुषः (pūruṣaḥ) - man; person; सः (saḥ) - that; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; righteousness; धर्मवेलायाम् (dharmavelāyām) - at the time of dharma; at the time of judgment; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; अभिहितः (abhihitaḥ) - declared; stated; परैः (paraiḥ) - by others; by outsiders;]
(But the strong man, as he sees dharma in the world, that dharma at the time of dharma becomes declared by others.)
But as a powerful man perceives righteousness in the world, so that righteousness is declared by others at the time of judgment. (2-62-15)
न विवेक्तुं च ते प्रश्नमेतं शक्नोमि निश्चयात्। सूक्ष्मत्वाद्गहनत्वाच्च कार्यस्यास्य च गौरवात् ॥२-६२-१६॥
na vivēktuṃ ca tē praśnam etaṃ śaknōmi niścayāt। sūkṣmatvād gahanatvāc ca kāryasya asya ca gauravāt॥2-62-16॥

nūnam antaḥ kulasyāsya bhavitā nacirādiva। tathā hi kuravaḥ sarve lobhamohaparāyaṇāḥ ॥2-62-17॥

कुलेषु जाताः कल्याणि व्यसनाभ्याहता भृशम्। धर्म्यान्मार्गान्न च्यवन्ते यथा नस्त्वं वधूः स्थिता ॥२-६२-१८॥
kuleṣu jātāḥ kalyāṇi vyasanābhyāhatā bhṛśam। dharmyān mārgān na cyavante yathā nas tvaṃ vadhūḥ sthitā ॥2-62-18॥

(O auspicious one, those born in families, greatly afflicted by misfortunes, do not deviate from righteous paths, just as you, our bride, have remained.)
O blessed one, those born in noble families, even when greatly afflicted by misfortune, do not stray from the path of righteousness, just as you, our bride, have remained steadfast. (2-62-18)
उपपन्नं च पाञ्चालि तवेदं वृत्तमीदृशम्। यत्कृच्छ्रमपि सम्प्राप्ता धर्ममेवान्ववेक्षसे ॥२-६२-१९॥
upapannaṃ ca pāñcāli tavedam vṛttam īdṛśam। yat kṛcchram api samprāptā dharmam eva anvavekṣase॥2-62-19॥
[उपपन्नं (upapannam) - befitting; च (ca) - and; पाञ्चालि (pāñcāli) - O Pāñcālī; तव (tava) - your; इदं (idam) - this; वृत्तम् (vṛttam) - conduct; ईदृशम् (īdṛśam) - such; यत् (yat) - which; कृच्छ्रम् (kṛcchram) - difficulty; अपि (api) - even; सम्प्राप्ता (samprāptā) - having attained; धर्मम् (dharmam) - righteousness; एव (eva) - only; अन्ववेक्षसे (anvavekṣase) - you consider;]
(And befitting, O Pāñcālī, is this conduct of yours, which, even having attained difficulty, you consider only righteousness.)
O Pāñcālī, your conduct is indeed appropriate, for even in great difficulty, you look only to righteousness. (2-62-19)
एते द्रोणादयश्चैव वृद्धा धर्मविदो जनाः। शून्यैः शरीरैस्तिष्ठन्ति गतासव इवानताः ॥२-६२-२०॥
ete droṇādayaś caiva vṛddhā dharmavido janāḥ। śūnyaiḥ śarīraistiṣṭhanti gatāsava ivānatāḥ ॥2-62-20॥

(These, Droṇa and others, and indeed the elders, knowers of dharma, people, with empty bodies stand, with departed life-breaths, like bent (ones).)

(Bound by the noose of dharma, thus I do not attain difficulty; restrained by respect and by the restraint of Arjuna.)
Because I am bound by the noose of dharma, I do not encounter difficulty; I am also restrained by respect and by Arjuna's control. (2-62-36)
धर्मराजनिसृष्टस्तु सिंहः क्षुद्रमृगानिव। धार्तराष्ट्रानिमान्पापान्निष्पिषेयं तलासिभिः ॥२-६२-३७॥
dharmarājanisṛṣṭastu siṃhaḥ kṣudramṛgāniva। dhārtarāṣṭrānimānpāpānniṣpiṣeyaṃ talāsibhiḥ ॥2-62-37॥
[धर्मराज (dharmarāja) - king Yudhiṣṭhira; निसृष्टः (nisṛṣṭaḥ) - sent forth; तु (tu) - but; सिंहः (siṃhaḥ) - lion; क्षुद्रमृगान् (kṣudramṛgān) - small animals; इव (iva) - like; धार्तराष्ट्रान् (dhārtarāṣṭrān) - the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; इमान् (imān) - these; पापान् (pāpān) - wicked; निष्पिषेयं (niṣpiṣeyaṃ) - I would crush; तलासिभिः (talāsibhiḥ) - with mace and sword;]
(But, sent forth by king Yudhiṣṭhira, like a lion (would crush) small animals, I would crush these wicked sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra with mace and sword.)
But, if sent forth by king Yudhiṣṭhira, I would crush these wicked sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra with my mace and sword, just as a lion crushes small animals. (2-62-37)
तमुवाच तदा भीष्मो द्रोणो विदुर एव च। क्षम्यतामेवमित्येवं सर्वं सम्भवति त्वयि ॥२-६२-३८॥
tamuvāca tadā bhīṣmo droṇo vidura eva ca। kṣamyatāmevamityevaṃ sarvaṃ sambhavati tvayi ॥2-62-38॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; तदा (tadā) - then; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; क्षम्यताम् (kṣamyatām) - let it be forgiven; एवम् (evam) - thus; इति (iti) - so; एवम् (evam) - thus; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; सम्भवति (sambhavati) - becomes possible; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you;]
(Him said then Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Vidura indeed and; let it be forgiven thus so thus all becomes possible in you.)
Then Bhīṣma, Droṇa, and Vidura said to him, "Let it be forgiven; thus, everything becomes possible in you." (2-62-38)
