वनवासाय चक्रुस्ते मतिं पार्थाः पराजिताः। अजिनान्युत्तरीयाणि जगृहुश्च यथाक्रमम् ॥२-६८-१॥
vanavāsāya cakruste matiṃ pārthāḥ parājitāḥ। ajinānyuttarīyāṇi jagṛhuśca yathākramam ॥2-68-1॥
[वनवासाय (vanavāsāya) - for forest-dwelling; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - made; ते (te) - they; मतिम् (matim) - decision; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pṛthā; पराजिताः (parājitāḥ) - defeated; अजिनानि (ajināni) - deerskins; उत्तरीयाणि (uttarīyāṇi) - upper garments; जगृहुश्च (jagṛhuś ca) - and took; यथाक्रमम् (yathākramam) - in due order;]
(For forest-dwelling, they, the sons of Pṛthā, defeated, made the decision; deerskins and upper garments they took in due order.)
Defeated, the sons of Pṛthā made up their minds to go to the forest; they took deerskins and upper garments in due order. (2-68-1)
अजिनैः संवृतान्दृष्ट्वा हृतराज्यानरिंदमान्। प्रस्थितान्वनवासाय ततो दुःशासनोऽब्रवीत् ॥२-६८-२॥

[अजिनैः (ajinaiḥ) - with deerskins; संवृतान् (saṁvṛtān) - clad; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; हृतराज्यान् (hṛtarājyān) - whose kingdom was taken; अरिंदमान् (arindamān) - destroyers of enemies; प्रस्थितान् (prasthitān) - departed; वनवासाय (vanavāsāya) - for forest dwelling; ततः (tataḥ) - then; दुःशासनः (duḥśāsanaḥ) - Duḥśāsana; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Having seen the destroyers of enemies, whose kingdom was taken, clad in deerskins, departed for forest dwelling, then Duḥśāsana said.)
When he saw the enemy-subduing princes, deprived of their kingdom, clad in deerskins and setting out for the forest, Duḥśāsana spoke thus. (2-68-2)
प्रवृत्तं धार्तराष्ट्रस्य चक्रं राज्ञो महात्मनः। पराभूताः पाण्डुपुत्रा विपत्तिं परमां गताः ॥२-६८-३॥

(The wheel of Dhritarashtra's great-souled king has been set in motion; the sons of Pandu, having been defeated, have reached supreme calamity.)
The wheel of power of Dhritarashtra's noble king has begun to turn; the sons of Pandu, having been defeated, have fallen into the greatest calamity. (2-68-3)
अद्य देवाः सम्प्रयाताः समैर्वर्त्मभिरस्थलैः। गुणज्येष्ठास्तथा ज्येष्ठा भूयांसो यद्वयं परैः ॥२-६८-४॥
adya devāḥ samprayātāḥ samair vartmabhiḥ asthalaiḥ। guṇa-jyeṣṭhāḥ tathā jyeṣṭhā bhūyāṃsaḥ yad vayaṃ paraiḥ॥2-68-4॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; सम्प्रयाताः (samprayātāḥ) - departed together; समैः (samaiḥ) - with equals; वर्त्मभिः (vartmabhiḥ) - by paths; अस्थलैः (asthalaiḥ) - by places; गुणज्येष्ठाः (guṇa-jyeṣṭhāḥ) - superior in qualities; तथा (tathā) - likewise; ज्येष्ठाः (jyeṣṭhāḥ) - elders; भूयांसः (bhūyāṃsaḥ) - greater; यत् (yat) - that; वयम् (vayam) - we; परैः (paraiḥ) - by others;]
(Today the gods have departed together by equal paths and places; those superior in qualities, likewise elders, are greater than we by others.)

नरकं पातिताः पार्था दीर्घकालमनन्तकम्। सुखाच्च हीना राज्याच्च विनष्टाः शाश्वतीः समाः ॥२-६८-५॥
narakaṃ pātitāḥ pārthā dīrghakālam-anantakam। sukhāc ca hīnā rājyāc ca vinaṣṭāḥ śāśvatīḥ samāḥ ॥2-68-5॥
[नरकं (narakam) - hell; पातिताः (pātitāḥ) - cast down; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - O sons of Pṛthā; दीर्घकालम् (dīrghakālam) - for a long time; अनन्तकम् (anantakam) - endless; सुखात् (sukhāt) - from happiness; च (ca) - and; हीनाः (hīnāḥ) - deprived; राज्यात् (rājyāt) - from kingdom; च (ca) - and; विनष्टाः (vinaṣṭāḥ) - destroyed; शाश्वतीः (śāśvatīḥ) - eternal; समाः (samāḥ) - years;]
(O sons of Pṛthā, cast down to hell for a long, endless time, deprived of happiness and kingdom, destroyed for eternal years.)
O sons of Pṛthā, you are cast into hell for a long, endless time, deprived of happiness and kingdom, and ruined for countless ages. (2-68-5)
बलेन मत्ता ये ते स्म धार्तराष्ट्रान्प्रहासिषुः। ते निर्जिता हृतधना वनमेष्यन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥२-६८-६॥

[बलेन (balena) - by strength; मत्ता (mattā) - intoxicated; ये (ye) - who; ते (te) - they; स्म (sma) - indeed; धार्तराष्ट्रान् (dhārtarāṣṭrān) - the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; प्रहासिषुः (prahāsiṣuḥ) - intended to deride; ते (te) - they; निर्जिता (nirjitā) - defeated; हृतधना (hṛtadhanā) - having lost their wealth; वनम् (vanam) - to the forest; एष्यन्ति (eṣyanti) - will go; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas;]
(By strength intoxicated who they indeed the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra intended to deride; they defeated, having lost their wealth, to the forest will go, the Pāṇḍavas.)
Those who, intoxicated by their strength, sought to deride the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra—those Pāṇḍavas, now defeated and deprived of their wealth, will go to the forest. (2-68-6)
चित्रान्संनाहानवमुञ्चन्तु चैषां; वासांसि दिव्यानि च भानुमन्ति। निवास्यन्तां रुरुचर्माणि सर्वे; यथा ग्लहं सौबलस्याभ्युपेताः ॥२-६८-७॥
citrān saṁnāhān avamuñcantu ca eṣām; vāsāṁsi divyāni ca bhānumanti. nivāsyantāṁ ruru-carmāṇi sarve; yathā glahaṁ saubalasya abhyupetāḥ ॥2-68-7॥
[चित्रान् (citrān) - variegated; संनाहान् (saṁnāhān) - armours; अवमुञ्चन्तु (avamuñcantu) - let them remove; च (ca) - and; एषां (eṣām) - of these; वासांसि (vāsāṁsi) - garments; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; च (ca) - and; भानुमन्ति (bhānumanti) - radiant; निवास्यन्तां (nivāsyantāṁ) - let them be put on; रुरुचर्माणि (ruru-carmāṇi) - antelope-skins; सर्वे (sarve) - all; यथा (yathā) - so that; ग्लहं (glahaṁ) - contest; सौबलस्य (saubalasya) - of Saubala (Shakuni); अभ्युपेताः (abhyupetāḥ) - having approached;]
(Let the variegated armours of these be removed, and let the divine, radiant garments be put on; let all put on antelope-skins, so that, having approached the contest of Saubala (Shakuni).)

न सन्ति लोकेषु पुमांस ईदृशा; इत्येव ये भावितबुद्धयः सदा। ज्ञास्यन्ति तेऽऽत्मानमिमेऽद्य पाण्डवा; विपर्यये षण्ढतिला इवाफलाः ॥२-६८-८॥
na santi lokeṣu pumāṁsa īdṛśā; ityeva ye bhāvitabuddhayaḥ sadā. jñāsyanti te''tmānam ime'dya pāṇḍavā; viparyaye ṣaṇḍhatilā ivāphalāḥ ॥2-68-8॥
[न (na) - not; सन्ति (santi) - are; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in worlds; पुमांस (pumāṁsa) - men; ईदृशा (īdṛśā) - such as these; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; ये (ye) - who; भावितबुद्धयः (bhāvitabuddhayaḥ) - whose minds are cultivated; सदा (sadā) - always; ज्ञास्यन्ति (jñāsyanti) - will know; ते (te) - they; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - the self; इमे (ime) - these; अद्य (adya) - today; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - Pāṇḍavas; विपर्यये (viparyaye) - in reversal; षण्ढतिलाः (ṣaṇḍhatilāḥ) - impotent sesames; इव (iva) - like; अफलाः (aphalāḥ) - fruitless;]
(Not are in worlds men such as these; thus indeed who whose minds are cultivated always. Will know they the self these today, Pāṇḍavas; in reversal impotent sesames like fruitless.)
There are no men like these in the worlds; only those whose minds are always cultivated thus indeed. Today, these Pāṇḍavas will know the self; in reversal, they are like impotent, fruitless sesames. (2-68-8)
अयं हि वासोदय ईदृशानां; मनस्विनां कौरव मा भवेद्वः। अदीक्षितानामजिनानि यद्व; द्बलीयसां पश्यत पाण्डवानाम् ॥२-६८-९॥
ayaṃ hi vāsodaya īdṛśānāṃ; manasvināṃ kaurava mā bhaved vaḥ। adīkṣitānām ajināni yad va; dbalīyasāṃ paśyata pāṇḍavānām ॥2-68-9॥
[अयं (ayaṃ) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; वासोदय (vāsodaya) - garment; ईदृशानां (īdṛśānāṃ) - of such; मनस्विनां (manasvināṃ) - of the high-minded; कौरव (kaurava) - O Kaurava; मा (mā) - not; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; वः (vaḥ) - for you; अदीक्षितानाम् (adīkṣitānām) - of the uninitiated; अजिनानि (ajināni) - deerskins; यद् (yad) - which; द्बलीयसाम् (dbalīyasām) - of the stronger; पश्यत (paśyata) - behold; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas;]
(This indeed garment of such of the high-minded, O Kaurava, should not be for you. Of the uninitiated, the deerskins which of the stronger, behold of the Pāṇḍavas.)
O Kaurava, this garment is indeed for such high-minded ones; it should not be for you. See the deerskins of the uninitiated, which belong to the stronger—behold those of the Pāṇḍavas. (2-68-9)
महाप्राज्ञः सोमको यज्ञसेनः; कन्यां पाञ्चालीं पाण्डवेभ्यः प्रदाय। अकार्षीद्वै दुष्कृतं नेह सन्ति; क्लीबाः पार्थाः पतयो याज्ञसेन्याः ॥२-६८-१०॥
mahāprājñaḥ somako yajñasenaḥ; kanyāṃ pāñcālīṃ pāṇḍavebhyaḥ pradāya। akāṛṣīdvai duṣkṛtaṃ neha santi; klībāḥ pārthāḥ patayo yājñasenyāḥ ॥2-68-10॥
[महाप्राज्ञः (mahāprājñaḥ) - greatly wise; सोमकः (somakaḥ) - Somaka; यज्ञसेनः (yajñasenaḥ) - Yajñasena; कन्यां (kanyāṃ) - maiden; पाञ्चालीं (pāñcālīṃ) - Pāñcālī (Draupadī); पाण्डवेभ्यः (pāṇḍavebhyaḥ) - to the Pāṇḍavas; प्रदाय (pradāya) - having given; अकार्षीत् (akārṣīt) - did; वै (vai) - indeed; दुष्कृतम् (duṣkṛtam) - evil deed; न (na) - not; इह (iha) - here; सन्ति (santi) - are; क्लीबाः (klībāḥ) - impotent; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pṛthā (Pāṇḍavas); पतयः (patayaḥ) - husbands; याज्ञसेन्याः (yājñasenyāḥ) - of Yājñasenī (Draupadī);]
(Greatly wise Somaka Yajñasena, having given the maiden Pāñcālī to the Pāṇḍavas, indeed did not commit an evil deed here; the sons of Pṛthā, husbands of Yājñasenī, are not impotent. "(2-68-10)")

सूक्ष्मान्प्रावारानजिनानि चोदिता; न्दृष्ट्वारण्ये निर्धनानप्रतिष्ठान्। कां त्वं प्रीतिं लप्स्यसे याज्ञसेनि; पतिं वृणीष्व यमिहान्यमिच्छसि ॥२-६८-११॥
sūkṣmān prāvārān ajināni ca uditāndṛṣṭvā araṇye nirdhanān apratiṣṭhān. kāṃ tvaṃ prītiṃ lapsyase yājñaseni; patiṃ vṛṇīṣva yam iha anyam icchasi ॥2-68-11॥
[सूक्ष्मान् (sūkṣmān) - subtle; delicate; प्रावारान् (prāvārān) - cloaks; garments; अजिनानि (ajināni) - deerskins; च (ca) - and; उदिता (uditā) - worn; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; अरण्ये (araṇye) - in the forest; निर्धनान् (nirdhanān) - impoverished; without wealth; अप्रतिष्ठान् (apratiṣṭhān) - without position; homeless; कां (kāṃ) - what; which; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; प्रीतिं (prītiṃ) - affection; pleasure; लप्स्यसे (lapsyase) - will obtain; याज्ञसेनि (yājñaseni) - O daughter of Yajñasena; पतिं (patiṃ) - husband; वृणीष्व (vṛṇīṣva) - choose; यम् (yam) - whom; इह (iha) - here; अन्यम् (anyam) - another; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire;]
(Having seen the subtle cloaks and deerskins worn, the impoverished and homeless in the forest, what affection will you obtain, O daughter of Yajñasena? Choose as husband here whomever else you desire.)
Having seen the delicate garments and deerskins worn by the impoverished and homeless in the forest, what happiness will you find, O Yajñaseni? Choose as your husband here anyone else you wish. (2-68-11)
एते हि सर्वे कुरवः समेताः; क्षान्ता दान्ताः सुद्रविणोपपन्नाः। एषां वृणीष्वैकतमं पतित्वे; न त्वां तपेत्कालविपर्ययोऽयम् ॥२-६८-१२॥
ete hi sarve kuravaḥ sametāḥ; kṣāntā dāntāḥ sudraviṇopapannāḥ। eṣāṃ vṛṇīṣvaikatamaṃ patitve; na tvāṃ tapet kālaviparyayo'yam ॥2-68-12॥
[एते (ete) - these; हि (hi) - indeed; सर्वे (sarve) - all; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - Kurus; समेताः (sametāḥ) - assembled; क्षान्ताः (kṣāntāḥ) - forbearing; दान्ताः (dāntāḥ) - self-controlled; सुद्रविणोपपन्नाः (sudraviṇopapannāḥ) - endowed with great wealth; एषां (eṣāṃ) - of these; वृणीष्व (vṛṇīṣva) - choose; एकतमम् (ekatamam) - one among; पतित्वे (patitve) - as husband; न (na) - not; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; तपेत् (tapet) - should afflict; कालविपर्ययः (kālaviparyayaḥ) - impropriety of time; अयम् (ayam) - this;]
(These indeed all Kurus assembled; forbearing self-controlled endowed with great wealth. Of these choose one among as husband; not you should afflict impropriety of time this. (2-68-12))
All these assembled Kurus are forbearing, self-controlled, and endowed with great wealth. Choose any one of them as your husband; let not this impropriety of time afflict you. (2-68-12)
यथाफलाः षण्ढतिला यथा चर्ममया मृगाः। तथैव पाण्डवाः सर्वे यथा काकयवा अपि ॥२-६८-१३॥
yathāphalāḥ ṣaṇḍhatilā yathā carmamayā mṛgāḥ। tathaiva pāṇḍavāḥ sarve yathā kākayavā api ॥2-68-13॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; फलाः (phalāḥ) - fruit-bearing; षण्ढतिला (ṣaṇḍhatilā) - impotent sesame seeds; यथा (yathā) - just as; चर्ममया (carmamayā) - made of skin; मृगाः (mṛgāḥ) - deer; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; सर्वे (sarve) - all; यथा (yathā) - just as; काकयवा (kākayavā) - crow-barley; अपि (api) - even;]
(Just as fruitless are impotent sesame seeds, just as deer made of skin, in the same way all the Pāṇḍavas are, just as even crow-barley.)
Just as impotent sesame seeds are fruitless, and deer made of skin are not real, so too are all the Pāṇḍavas, just like even crow-barley. (2-68-13)
किं पाण्डवांस्त्वं पतितानुपास्से; मोघः श्रमः षण्ढतिलानुपास्य। एवं नृशंसः परुषाणि पार्था; नश्रावयद्धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रः ॥२-६८-१४॥
kiṁ pāṇḍavāṁstvaṁ patitānupāsse; moghaḥ śramaḥ ṣaṇḍhatilānupāsya. evaṁ nṛśaṁsaḥ paruṣāṇi pārthā; naśrāvayaddhṛtarāṣṭrasya putraḥ ॥2-68-14॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; पतितान् (patitān) - fallen; उपास्से (upāsse) - attend; मोघः (moghaḥ) - fruitless; श्रमः (śramaḥ) - effort; षण्ढतिलान् (ṣaṇḍhatilān) - impotent sesame seeds; उपास्य (upāsya) - having worshipped; एवं (evaṁ) - thus; नृशंसः (nṛśaṁsaḥ) - cruel; परुषाणि (paruṣāṇi) - harsh words; पार्था (pārthā) - O son of Pṛthā (Arjuna); न (na) - not; श्रावयत् (śrāvayat) - caused to be heard; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son;]
(What, you attend upon the fallen Pāṇḍavas; fruitless is the effort, having worshipped impotent sesame seeds. Thus, cruel, harsh words, O son of Pṛthā, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra did not cause to be heard.)
Why do you serve the fallen Pāṇḍavas? Your effort is in vain, like worshipping impotent sesame seeds. In this way, O son of Pṛthā, the cruel son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra did not utter such harsh words. (2-68-14)
तद्वै श्रुत्वा भीमसेनोऽत्यमर्षी; निर्भर्त्स्योच्चैस्तं निगृह्यैव रोषात्। उवाचेदं सहसैवोपगम्य; सिंहो यथा हैमवतः शृगालम् ॥२-६८-१५॥
tad vai śrutvā bhīmaseno'tyamarṣī; nirbhartsyo'ccais taṃ nigṛhyaiva roṣāt. uvācedaṃ sahasaivopagamya; siṃho yathā haimavataḥ śṛgālam ॥2-68-15॥
[तत् (tat) - that; वै (vai) - indeed; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; अत्यमर्री (atyamarṣī) - extremely enraged; निर्भर्त्स्य (nirbhartsya) - rebuking; उच्चैः (uccaiḥ) - loudly; तम् (tam) - him; निगृह्य (nigṛhya) - having seized; एव (eva) - indeed; रोषात् (roṣāt) - from anger; उवाच (uvāca) - said; इदम् (idam) - this; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; एव (eva) - indeed; उपगम्य (upagamya) - having approached; सिंहः (siṃhaḥ) - lion; यथा (yathā) - as; हैमवतः (haimavataḥ) - of Himavat (the Himalaya); शृगालम् (śṛgālam) - jackal;]
(That indeed having heard, Bhīmasena, extremely enraged, rebuking him loudly, having seized (him) indeed from anger, said this, suddenly indeed having approached, as a lion of Himavat (the Himalaya) (would) a jackal.)
Hearing that, Bhīmasena, filled with intense anger, rebuked him loudly, seized him in wrath, and suddenly, like a lion of the Himalayas confronting a jackal, spoke these words. (2-68-15)

क्रूर पापजनैर्जुष्टमकृतार्थं प्रभाषसे। गान्धारविद्यया हि त्वं राजमध्ये विकत्थसे ॥२-६८-१६॥
krūra pāpajanair juṣṭam akṛtārthaṃ prabhāṣase. gāndhāravidyayā hi tvaṃ rājamadhye vikatthase ॥2-68-16॥
[क्रूर (krūra) - cruel; पापजनैः (pāpajanaiḥ) - by wicked people; जुष्टम् (juṣṭam) - associated with; अकृतार्थम् (akṛtārtham) - unaccomplished; प्रभाषसे (prabhāṣase) - you speak; गान्धारविद्यया (gāndhāravidyayā) - with the knowledge of Gandhara; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वम् (tvam) - you; राजमध्ये (rājamadhye) - in the midst of kings; विकत्थसे (vikatthase) - you boast;]
(You speak, associated with cruel, wicked people, unaccomplished, with the knowledge of Gandhara indeed, you boast in the midst of kings.)
You, associated with cruel and wicked people and having achieved nothing, speak arrogantly; indeed, with your Gandhara knowledge, you boast among kings. (2-68-16)
यथा तुदसि मर्माणि वाक्षरैरिह नो भृशम्। तथा स्मारयिता तेऽहं कृन्तन्मर्माणि संयुगे ॥२-६८-१७॥

[यथा (yathā) - just as; तुदसि (tudasi) - you pierce; मर्माणि (marmāṇi) - vital spots; वाक्-क्षरैः (vāk-ṣaraiḥ) - with words-arrows; इह (iha) - here; नः (naḥ) - us; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - severely; तथा (tathā) - so; स्मारयिता (smārayitā) - reminder; ते (te) - to you; अहम् (aham) - I; कृन्तन् (kṛntan) - cutting; मर्माणि (marmāṇi) - vital spots; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle;]
(Just as you pierce vital spots here with word-arrows, us, severely, so a reminder to you I, cutting vital spots in battle.)
Just as you now wound us deeply with your words, so in battle I will remind you by cutting your vital spots. (2-68-17)
ये च त्वामनुवर्तन्ते कामलोभवशानुगाः। गोप्तारः सानुबन्धांस्तान्नेष्यामि यमसादनम् ॥२-६८-१८॥
ye ca tvām anuvartante kāma-lobha-vaśānugāḥ। goptāraḥ sānubandhāṃs tān neṣyāmi yamasādanam ॥2-68-18॥

(And those who, being under the sway of desire and greed, follow you, the protectors with their associates, them I will lead to the abode of Yama.)
And those who, under the influence of desire and greed, follow you—those protectors and their associates—I will lead them to the abode of Yama. (2-68-18)

(Thus, speaking, driven away by skins, overwhelmed by sorrow, indeed danced around. In the midst of the Kurus, on the path bound by dharma, the cow, the cow, thus indeed calling, having cast off shame.)
Thus, as it was being spoken and driven away by skins, overwhelmed by sorrow, it danced about. In the midst of the Kurus, on the path bound by dharma, the cow, having cast off all shame, kept calling out, "Cow! Cow!" (2-68-19)

nṛśaṁsaṁ paruṣaṁ krūraṁ śakyaṁ duḥśāsana tvayā। nikṛtyā hi dhanaṁ labdhvā ko vikatthitum arhati ॥2-68-20॥

(Inhumanly, harshly, cruelly, possible, Duḥśāsana, by you; by deceit indeed wealth having obtained, who to boast deserves?)
Duḥśāsana, having obtained wealth by deceit in an inhuman, harsh, and cruel manner by you, who indeed deserves to boast? (2-68-20)
मा ह स्म सुकृताँल्लोकान्गच्छेत्पार्थो वृकोदरः। यदि वक्षसि भित्त्वा ते न पिबेच्छोणितं रणे ॥२-६८-२१॥
mā ha sma sukṛtāṃllokāngacchet pārtho vṛkodaraḥ। yadi vakṣasi bhittvā te na pibec choṇitaṃ raṇe ॥2-68-21॥
[मा (mā) - do not; ह (ha) - indeed; स्म (sma) - ever; सुकृतान् (sukṛtān) - the virtuous; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should attain; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma); यदि (yadi) - if; वक्षसि (vakṣasi) - on (your) chest; भित्त्वा (bhittvā) - having pierced; ते (te) - your; न (na) - not; पिबेत् (pibet) - should drink; शोणितम् (śoṇitam) - blood; रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]
(Do not indeed ever let Pārtha or Vṛkodara attain the worlds of the virtuous, if, having pierced your chest, he does not drink your blood in battle.)
Let neither Arjuna nor Bhīma attain the worlds of the virtuous, unless, having pierced your chest in battle, he drinks your blood. (2-68-21)
धार्तराष्ट्रान्रणे हत्वा मिषतां सर्वधन्विनाम्। शमं गन्तास्मि नचिरात्सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि वः ॥२-६८-२२॥
dhārtarāṣṭrān raṇe hatvā miṣatāṃ sarvadhanvinām। śamaṃ gantāsmi nacirāt satyam etad bravīmi vaḥ ॥2-68-22॥

(Having slain the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra in battle, while all the bowmen are watching, I shall go to peace without delay; truly, this I say to you.)
I tell you truly: Having slain the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra in battle, in the sight of all the bowmen, I will soon attain peace. (2-68-22)

(Of him, the king, of lion-gait, with playfulness; Duryodhana, of Bhīmasena, from joy, the gait, with his own gait, imitated, foolish; of those departing, of the Pāṇḍavas, from the assembly.)
As the Pāṇḍavas were leaving the assembly, Duryodhana, the foolish king, out of joy, playfully imitated the lion-like gait of Bhīmasena. (2-68-23)
नैतावता कृतमित्यब्रवीत्तं; वृकोदरः संनिवृत्तार्धकायः। शीघ्रं हि त्वा निहतं सानुबन्धं; संस्मार्याहं प्रतिवक्ष्यामि मूढ ॥२-६८-२४॥

(Not by this much is it done, thus said to him Vṛkodara, withdrawn half-bodied. Quickly indeed you, slain with followers, having reminded, I will reply, deluded one.)
Vṛkodara, his body half-withdrawn, said to him, "It is not accomplished by this alone." Quickly, having reminded you—slain with your followers—I will answer you, O deluded one. (2-68-24)
एतत्समीक्ष्यात्मनि चावमानं; नियम्य मन्युं बलवान्स मानी। राजानुगः संसदि कौरवाणां; विनिष्क्रमन्वाक्यमुवाच भीमः ॥२-६८-२५॥
etatsamīkṣyātmani cāvamānaṃ; niyamya manyuṃ balavānsa mānī. rājānugaḥ saṃsadi kauravāṇāṃ; viniṣkramanvākyamuvāca bhīmaḥ ॥2-68-25॥

(Having observed this insult in himself and having restrained his anger, the strong and proud follower of the king, Bhima, stepping forth in the assembly of the Kauravas, spoke these words.)
Seeing this insult to himself, Bhima, the strong and proud follower of the king, controlled his anger and, stepping forward in the Kaurava assembly, spoke these words. (2-68-25)
अहं दुर्योधनं हन्ता कर्णं हन्ता धनञ्जयः। शकुनिं चाक्षकितवं सहदेवो हनिष्यति ॥२-६८-२६॥

I am the slayer of Duryodhana and Karna, I am Dhananjaya; Sahadeva will slay Shakuni, the gambler with dice. (2-68-26)
इदं च भूयो वक्ष्यामि सभामध्ये बृहद्वचः। सत्यं देवाः करिष्यन्ति यन्नो युद्धं भविष्यति ॥२-६८-२७॥
idaṃ ca bhūyo vakṣyāmi sabhāmadhye bṛhadvacaḥ। satyaṃ devāḥ kariṣyanti yanno yuddhaṃ bhaviṣyati ॥2-68-27॥

(This and again I shall say in the midst of the assembly great words. The gods will make true that battle which will happen for us.)
I will once again declare these great words in the midst of the assembly: the gods will make true the battle that is to happen for us. (2-68-27)
सुयोधनमिमं पापं हन्तास्मि गदया युधि। शिरः पादेन चास्याहमधिष्ठास्यामि भूतले ॥२-६८-२८॥
suyodhanam imaṃ pāpaṃ hantāsmi gadayā yudhi। śiraḥ pādena ca asya aham adhiṣṭhāsyāmi bhūtale ॥2-68-28॥
[सुयोधनम् (suyodhanam) - Su-yodhana (proper name); इमम् (imam) - this; पापम् (pāpam) - wicked; हन्ता (hantā) - I will slay; अस्मि (asmi) - am; (emphatic future) ; गदया (gadayā) - with the mace; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; पादेन (pādena) - with (my) foot; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; अहम् (aham) - I; अधिष्ठास्यामि (adhiṣṭhāsyāmi) - will place; भूतले (bhūtale) - on the ground;]
(I will slay this wicked Su-yodhana with the mace in battle. I will place his head on the ground with my foot.)
I will kill this wicked Suyodhana with my mace in battle, and I will set his head on the ground with my foot. (2-68-28)
वाक्यशूरस्य चैवास्य परुषस्य दुरात्मनः। दुःशासनस्य रुधिरं पातास्मि मृगराडिव ॥२-६८-२९॥
vākyaśūrasya caivāsya paruṣasya durātmanaḥ। duḥśāsanasya rudhiraṃ pātāsmi mṛgarāḍiva ॥2-68-29॥
[वाक्यशूरस्य (vākyaśūrasya) - of the one brave in words; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - of this; परुषस्य (paruṣasya) - harsh; दुरात्मनः (durātmanaḥ) - wicked-souled; दुःशासनस्य (duḥśāsanasya) - of Duḥśāsana; रुधिरं (rudhiraṃ) - blood; पातास्मि (pātāsmi) - I will drink; मृगराट् (mṛgarāṭ) - lion; इव (iva) - like;]
(Of the one brave in words and indeed of this harsh, wicked-souled Duḥśāsana, I will drink the blood like a lion.)
I will drink the blood of this harsh and wicked Duḥśāsana, who is only brave in words, just as a lion does. (2-68-29)

(Not indeed by speech is determination, O Bhima, known of the virtuous; from here, in the fourteenth year, observers will see what will be.)
O Bhima, the resolve of the virtuous is not known by words alone; in the fourteenth year from now, observers will see what happens. (2-68-30)
दुर्योधनस्य कर्णस्य शकुनेश्च दुरात्मनः। दुःशासनचतुर्थानां भूमिः पास्यति शोणितम् ॥२-६८-३१॥
duryodhanasya karṇasya śakuneś ca dur-ātmanaḥ। duḥśāsana-caturthānāṃ bhūmiḥ pāsyati śoṇitam ॥2-68-31॥
[दुर्योधनस्य (duryodhanasya) - of Duryodhana; कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of Karṇa; शकुनेः (śakuneḥ) - of Śakuni; च (ca) - and; दुरात्मनः (dur-ātmanaḥ) - wicked-souled; दुःशासन (duḥśāsana) - Duḥśāsana; चतुर्थानां (caturthānāṃ) - and the fourth (one); भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - the earth; पास्यति (pāsyati) - will drink; शोणितम् (śoṇitam) - blood;]

(One who envies, one who speaks, one who instigates the wicked—by the command of Bhīmasena, I am your slayer of Karṇa in battle.)
Those who envy, speak, and instigate the wicked—by the command of Bhīmasena, I am your slayer of Karṇa in battle. (2-68-32)
अर्जुनः प्रतिजानीते भीमस्य प्रियकाम्यया। कर्णं कर्णानुगांश्चैव रणे हन्तास्मि पत्रिभिः ॥२-६८-३३॥

(Arjuna declares for the sake of Bhīma's dear wish: Karna and the followers of Karna, indeed, in battle, I shall slay with arrows.)
Arjuna, for the sake of Bhīma's cherished wish, declares: 'I will slay Karna and Karna's followers in battle with arrows.' (2-68-33)
ये चान्ये प्रतियोत्स्यन्ति बुद्धिमोहेन मां नृपाः। तांश्च सर्वाञ्शितैर्बाणैर्नेतास्मि यमसादनम् ॥२-६८-३४॥
ye cānye pratiyotsyanti buddhimohena māṃ nṛpāḥ। tāṃś ca sarvāñ śitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ netāsmi yamasādanam ॥2-68-34॥

(Who and others will fight against me by delusion of intellect, kings; them and all with sharp arrows will lead I am to the abode of Yama.)
And those other kings who, out of delusion of intellect, will fight against me—I shall lead all of them with sharp arrows to the abode of Yama. (2-68-34)
चलेद्धि हिमवान्स्थानान्निष्प्रभः स्याद्दिवाकरः। शैत्यं सोमात्प्रणश्येत मत्सत्यं विचलेद्यदि ॥२-६८-३५॥
caled dhi himavān sthānān niṣprabhaḥ syād divākaraḥ। śaityaṃ somāt praṇaśyet mat satyaṃ vicaled yadi ॥2-68-35॥
[चलेत् (calet) - should move; हि (hi) - indeed; हिमवान् (himavān) - Himalaya; स्थानात् (sthānāt) - from place; निष्प्रभः (niṣprabhaḥ) - devoid of radiance; स्यात् (syāt) - would become; दिवाकरः (divākaraḥ) - the sun; शैत्यं (śaityaṃ) - coolness; सोमात् (somāt) - from the moon; प्रणश्येत् (praṇaśyet) - would perish; मत् (mat) - my; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; विचलेत् (vicalet) - should waver; यदि (yadi) - if;]
(Should the Himalaya move from its place, the sun would become devoid of radiance; coolness from the moon would perish; my truth should waver, if (that happens).)
If the Himalaya were to move from its place, the sun would lose its radiance, and the moon would lose its coolness; only then would my truth waver. (2-68-35)
न प्रदास्यति चेद्राज्यमितो वर्षे चतुर्दशे। दुर्योधनो हि सत्कृत्य सत्यमेतद्भविष्यति ॥२-६८-३६॥
na pradāsyati ced rājyam ito varṣe caturdaśe। duryodhano hi satkṛtya satyam etad bhaviṣyati ॥2-68-36॥
[न (na) - not; प्रदास्यति (pradāsyati) - will give; चेत् (cet) - if; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; इतः (itaḥ) - from now; वर्षे (varṣe) - in the year; चतुर्दशे (caturdaśe) - fourteenth; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; हि (hi) - indeed; सत्कृत्य (satkṛtya) - having honored; सत्यं (satyam) - truth; एतत् (etat) - this; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Not will give if kingdom from now in the fourteenth year; Duryodhana indeed having honored, truth this will be.)
If Duryodhana does not give back the kingdom after these fourteen years, then this will certainly be the truth. (2-68-36)

ity-uktavati pārthe tu śrīmān mādravatī-sutaḥ। pragṛhya vipulaṃ bāhuṃ sahadevaḥ pratāpavān॥2-68-37॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तवति (uktavati) - having spoken; पार्थे (pārthe) - to Pārtha; तु (tu) - but; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - prosperous; माद्रवतीसुतः (mādravatī-sutaḥ) - son of Mādravatī; प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having seized; विपुलं (vipulaṃ) - broad; बाहुं (bāhuṃ) - arm; सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - valiant;]
(Thus, when Pārtha had spoken, but the prosperous son of Mādravatī, the valiant Sahadeva, having seized his broad arm.)
When Pārtha had spoken thus, the illustrious son of Mādravatī, the valiant Sahadeva, seized his broad arm. (2-68-37)
सौबलस्य वधं प्रेप्सुरिदं वचनमब्रवीत्। क्रोधसंरक्तनयनो निःश्वसन्निव पन्नगः ॥२-६८-३८॥
saubalasya vadhaṃ prepsur idaṃ vacanam abravīt। krodhasaṃraktanayano niḥśvasann iva pannagaḥ ॥2-68-38॥
[सौबलस्य (saubalasya) - of Saubala (Shakuni); वधं (vadham) - slaying; death; प्रेप्सुः (prepsuḥ) - desiring; wishing; इदं (idam) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; said; क्रोधसंरक्तनयनो (krodhasaṃraktanayano) - with eyes reddened by anger; निःश्वसन् (niḥśvasan) - breathing out; sighing; इव (iva) - like; as if; पन्नगः (pannagaḥ) - serpent; snake;]
(Desiring the slaying of Saubala, this speech he spoke; with eyes reddened by anger, breathing out like a serpent.)
Desiring to kill Saubala, he spoke these words, his eyes red with anger, breathing like a serpent. (2-68-38)
अक्षान्यान्मन्यसे मूढ गान्धाराणां यशोहर। नैतेऽक्षा निशिता बाणास्त्वयैते समरे वृताः ॥२-६८-३९॥
akṣānyān manyase mūḍha gāndhārāṇāṃ yaśohara। naite'kṣā niśitā bāṇās tvayaitae samare vṛtāḥ ॥2-68-39॥

O deluded one, you imagine these to be the dice of the Gandharas, O destroyer of fame. But these are not dice; these are sharp arrows used by you in battle. (2-68-39)
यथा चैवोक्तवान्भीमस्त्वामुद्दिश्य सबान्धवम्। कर्ताहं कर्मणस्तस्य कुरु कार्याणि सर्वशः ॥२-६८-४०॥
yathā caivoktvānbhīmastvāmuddiśya sabāndhavam। kartāhaṃ karmaṇastasya kuru kāryāṇi sarvaśaḥ ॥2-68-40॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; as stated; in the way; as; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; just; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - has spoken; has said; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; (name of the person); त्वाम् (tvām) - you; उद्दिश्य (uddiśya) - addressing; referring to; with regard to; स-बान्धवम् (sa-bāndhavam) - with relatives; with kinsmen; कर्ताऽहम् (kartā'ham) - I am the doer; I am the agent; कर्मणः (karmaṇaḥ) - of the action; of the deed; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; कुरु (kuru) - do; perform; कार्याणि (kāryāṇi) - actions; tasks; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; in every way;]
(As indeed Bhīma has spoken, addressing you together with your kinsmen, I am the doer of that action; perform all the tasks entirely.)
Just as Bhīma has said to you and your kinsmen, 'I am the agent of that action,' so you should carry out all the tasks completely. (2-68-40)
हन्तास्मि तरसा युद्धे त्वां विक्रम्य सबान्धवम्। यदि स्थास्यसि सङ्ग्रामे क्षत्रधर्मेण सौबल ॥२-६८-४१॥
hantāsmi tarasā yuddhe tvāṃ vikramya sabāndhavam। yadi sthāsyasi saṅgrāme kṣatradharmeṇa saubala ॥2-68-41॥
[हन्ता (hantā) - slayer; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; तरसा (tarasā) - by force; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; विक्रम्य (vikramya) - having overcome; स-बान्धवम् (sa-bāndhavam) - with kinsmen; यदि (yadi) - if; स्थास्यसि (sthāsyasi) - you will stand; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; क्षत्रधर्मेण (kṣatradharmeṇa) - by the duty of a warrior; सौबल (saubala) - O son of Subala;]
(I am the slayer by force in battle, having overcome you with your kinsmen. If you will stand in battle by the duty of a warrior, O son of Subala.)
I am your slayer by force in battle, having overcome you and your kinsmen. If you stand your ground in battle according to the duty of a warrior, O son of Subala. (2-68-41)
सहदेववचः श्रुत्वा नकुलोऽपि विशां पते। दर्शनीयतमो नॄणामिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२-६८-४२॥
sahadevavacaḥ śrutvā nakulo'pi viśāṃ pate। darśanīyatamo nṝṇāmidaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥2-68-42॥

(Having heard Sahadeva's speech, Nakula also, O lord of the kings, the most handsome among men, spoke this speech.)
Hearing Sahadeva's words, Nakula, the most handsome among men, also addressed these words, O lord of the kings. (2-68-42)
सुतेयं यज्ञसेनस्य द्यूतेऽस्मिन्धृतराष्ट्रजैः। यैर्वाचः श्राविता रूक्षाः स्थितैर्दुर्योधनप्रिये ॥२-६८-४३॥
suteyaṃ yajñasenasya dyūte'smindhṛtarāṣṭrajaiḥ। yairvācaḥ śrāvitā rūkṣāḥ sthitairduryodhanapriye ॥2-68-43॥
[सुता (sutā) - daughter; इयम् (iyam) - this; यज्ञसेनस्य (yajñasenasya) - of Yajñasena; द्यूते (dyūte) - in the game (of dice); अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; धृतराष्ट्रजैः (dhṛtarāṣṭrajaiḥ) - by the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; यैः (yaiḥ) - by whom; वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; श्राविता (śrāvitā) - were made to be heard; रूक्षाः (rūkṣāḥ) - harsh; स्थितैः (sthitaiḥ) - by those standing; दुर्योधनप्रिये (duryodhanapriye) - dear to Duryodhana;]
(This daughter of Yajñasena, in this game (of dice), by the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, by whom harsh words were made to be heard, by those standing dear to Duryodhana.)
In this game of dice, this daughter of Yajñasena was subjected to harsh words by the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, who stood by, loyal to Duryodhana. (2-68-43)
तान्धार्तराष्ट्रान्दुर्वृत्तान्मुमूर्षून्कालचोदितान्। दर्शयिष्यामि भूयिष्ठमहं वैवस्वतक्षयम् ॥२-६८-४४॥
tāndhārtarāṣṭrāndurvṛttānmumūrṣūnkālacoditān। darśayiṣyāmi bhūyiṣṭhamahaṃ vaivasvatakṣayam ॥2-68-44॥
[तान् (tān) - those; धार्तराष्ट्रान् (dhārtarāṣṭrān) - Dhritarashtra's sons; दुर्वृत्तान् (durvṛttān) - ill-behaved; मुमूर्षून् (mumūrṣūn) - desiring to die; कालचोदितान् (kālacoditān) - impelled by Time; दर्शयिष्यामि (darśayiṣyāmi) - I will show; भूयिष्ठम् (bhūyiṣṭham) - the greatest; अहम् (aham) - I; वैवस्वतक्षयम् (vaivasvatakṣayam) - the destruction by Yama;]
(Those ill-behaved sons of Dhritarashtra, desiring to die, impelled by Time, I will show the greatest destruction by Yama.)
I will show the greatest destruction by Yama to those ill-behaved sons of Dhritarashtra, who are impelled by Time and desire death. (2-68-44)
निदेशाद्धर्मराजस्य द्रौपद्याः पदवीं चरन्। निर्धार्तराष्ट्रां पृथिवीं कर्तास्मि नचिरादिव ॥२-६८-४५॥
nideśāddharmarājasya draupadyāḥ padavīṃ caran। nirdhārtarāṣṭrāṃ pṛthivīṃ kartāsmi nacirādiva ॥2-68-45॥
[निदेशात् (nideśāt) - by the command; of order; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmarāja; of the king of righteousness; द्रौपद्याः (draupadyāḥ) - of Draupadī; Draupadī's; पदवीं (padavīṃ) - path; way; चरन् (caran) - walking; following; निर्धार्तराष्ट्रां (nirdhārtarāṣṭrāṃ) - devoid of Dhārtarāṣṭras; without the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - earth; land; कर्तास्मि (kartāsmi) - I shall make; I will do; नचिरात् (nacirāt) - soon; without delay; इव (iva) - as if; like;]
(Following the path of Draupadī by the command of Dharmarāja, I shall soon make the earth devoid of the Dhārtarāṣṭras, as if without delay.)
Obeying the command of Dharmarāja, I follow Draupadī's path; I will soon make the earth free from the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, without delay, as if immediately. (2-68-45)
एवं ते पुरुषव्याघ्राः सर्वे व्यायतबाहवः। प्रतिज्ञा बहुलाः कृत्वा धृतराष्ट्रमुपागमन् ॥२-६८-४६॥
evaṃ te puruṣavyāghrāḥ sarve vyāyatabāhavaḥ। pratijñā bahulāḥ kṛtvā dhṛtarāṣṭramupāgaman ॥2-68-46॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; ते (te) - they; पुरुषव्याघ्राः (puruṣavyāghrāḥ) - tiger among men; सर्वे (sarve) - all; व्यायतबाहवः (vyāyatabāhavaḥ) - strong-armed; प्रतिज्ञा (pratijñā) - vows; बहुलाः (bahulāḥ) - many; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; धृतराष्ट्रम् (dhṛtarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra; उपागमन् (upāgaman) - approached;]
(Thus they, all tigers among men, strong-armed, having made many vows, approached Dhritarashtra.)
Thus, all those strong-armed heroes, tigers among men, having made many vows, approached Dhritarashtra. (2-68-46)
