द्रोणं कृपं नृपांश्चान्यानश्वत्थामानमेव च। विदुरं धृतराष्ट्रं च धार्तराष्ट्रांश्च सर्वशः ॥२-६९-२॥

युयुत्सुं सञ्जयं चैव तथैवान्यान्सभासदः। सर्वानामन्त्र्य गच्छामि द्रष्टास्मि पुनरेत्य वः ॥२-६९-३॥

(Desiring to fight, Sañjaya and likewise other assembly members, having addressed all, I go; I shall see you again having returned.)
Desiring battle, I address Sañjaya and the other assembly members; I depart now, but I shall see you again when I return. (2-69-3)

न च किञ्चित्तदोचुस्ते ह्रिया सन्तो युधिष्ठिरम्। मनोभिरेव कल्याणं दध्युस्ते तस्य धीमतः ॥२-६९-४॥
na ca kiñcittadocuste hriyā santo yudhiṣṭhiram। manobhireva kalyāṇaṃ dadhyuste tasya dhīmataḥ ॥2-69-4॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; तत् (tat) - that; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; ते (te) - they; ह्रिया (hriyā) - out of modesty; सन्तः (santaḥ) - the virtuous; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; मनोभिः (manobhiḥ) - with (their) minds; एव (eva) - indeed; कल्याणम् (kalyāṇam) - welfare; दध्युḥ (dadhyuḥ) - wished; ते (te) - they; तस्य (tasya) - for him; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - the wise; ॥२-६९-४॥ (॥2-69-4॥) -;]
(And they did not say anything to Yudhishthira, the virtuous, out of modesty; indeed, with their minds, they wished welfare for him, the wise.)
Out of modesty, the virtuous did not say anything to Yudhishthira; but in their minds, they wished well for the wise one. (2-69-4)

आर्या पृथा राजपुत्री नारण्यं गन्तुमर्हति। सुकुमारी च वृद्धा च नित्यं चैव सुखोचिता ॥२-६९-५॥
āryā pṛthā rājaputrī nāraṇyaṃ gantum arhati। sukumārī ca vṛddhā ca nityaṃ caiva sukhocitā ॥2-69-5॥
[आर्या (āryā) - noble lady; पृथा (pṛthā) - Pṛthā; राजपुत्री (rājaputrī) - princess; नारण्यं (nāraṇyam) - to the forest; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy; सुकुमारी (sukumārī) - delicate girl; च (ca) - and; वृद्धा (vṛddhā) - old woman; च (ca) - and; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; चैव (caiva) - and indeed; सुखोचिता (sukhocitā) - accustomed to comfort;]
(The noble lady Pṛthā, the princess, is worthy to go to the forest. The delicate girl and the old woman, always and indeed, are accustomed to comfort.)

इह वत्स्यति कल्याणी सत्कृता मम वेश्मनि। इति पार्था विजानीध्वमगदं वोऽस्तु सर्वशः ॥२-६९-६॥
iha vatsyati kalyāṇī satkṛtā mama veśmani। iti pārthā vijānīdhvam agadaṃ vo'stu sarvaśaḥ ॥2-69-6॥
[इह (iha) - here; वत्स्यति (vatsyati) - will dwell; कल्याणी (kalyāṇī) - auspicious lady; सत्कृता (satkṛtā) - honored; मम (mama) - my; वेश्मनि (veśmani) - in house; इति (iti) - thus; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - O sons of Pṛthā; विजानीध्वम् (vijānīdhvam) - you all know; अगदं (agadam) - without disease; वः (vaḥ) - for you; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way;]
(Here will dwell the auspicious lady, honored, in my house. Thus, O sons of Pṛthā, you all know. Let there be freedom from disease for you in every way.)
The auspicious lady will reside here, honored in my house. So, O sons of Pṛthā, know this: may you all be free from disease in every way. (2-69-6)
युधिष्ठिर विजानीहि ममेदं भरतर्षभ। नाधर्मेण जितः कश्चिद्व्यथते वै पराजयात् ॥२-६९-७॥
yudhiṣṭhira vijānīhi mamedaṃ bharatarṣabha। nādharmeṇa jitaḥ kaścid vyathate vai parājayāt ॥2-69-7॥
[युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; विजानीहि (vijānīhi) - know; मम (mama) - my; इदं (idaṃ) - this; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas; न (na) - not; अधर्मेण (adharmeṇa) - by unrighteousness; जितः (jitaḥ) - conquered; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; व्यथते (vyathate) - is afflicted; वै (vai) - indeed; पराजयात् (parājayāt) - by defeat;]
(Yudhiṣṭhira, know this of mine, O bull among the Bharatas: no one who is conquered by unrighteousness is indeed afflicted by defeat.)
Yudhiṣṭhira, understand this from me, O best of the Bharatas: no one who is defeated by unrighteousness is truly pained by loss. (2-69-7)
त्वं वै धर्मान्विजानीषे युधां वेत्ता धनञ्जयः। हन्तारीणां भीमसेनो नकुलस्त्वर्थसङ्ग्रही ॥२-६९-८॥
tvaṃ vai dharmān vijānīṣe yudhāṃ vettā dhanañjayaḥ। hantārīṇāṃ bhīmaseno nakulas tv artha-saṅgrahī ॥2-69-8॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; वै (vai) - indeed; धर्मान् (dharmān) - dharmas; विजानीषे (vijānīṣe) - know; युधां (yudhām) - of battles; वेत्ता (vettā) - knower; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya; हन्तारीणां (hantārīṇām) - of slayers; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; त्व (tv) - you; अर्थसङ्ग्रही (artha-saṅgrahī) - collector of wealth;]
(You indeed know the dharmas; Dhanañjaya is the knower of battles; Bhīmasena is of the slayers; Nakula, you are the collector of wealth.)
You truly know the dharmas; Dhanañjaya is the expert in battles; Bhīmasena is the foremost among slayers; Nakula, you are the gatherer of wealth. (2-69-8)
संयन्ता सहदेवस्तु धौम्यो ब्रह्मविदुत्तमः। धर्मार्थकुशला चैव द्रौपदी धर्मचारिणी ॥२-६९-९॥
saṃyantā sahadevastu dhaumyo brahmaviduttamaḥ। dharmārthakuśalā caiva draupadī dharmacāriṇī ॥2-69-9॥
[संयन्ता (saṃyantā) - controller; सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; तु (tu) - but; धौम्यः (dhaumyaḥ) - Dhaumya; ब्रह्मविदुत्तमः (brahmaviduttamaḥ) - the foremost knower of Brahman; धर्मार्थकुशला (dharmārthakuśalā) - skilled in dharma and artha; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; धर्मचारिणी (dharmacāriṇī) - practiser of dharma;]
(The controller was Sahadeva, but Dhaumya was the foremost knower of Brahman. Draupadī, indeed, was skilled in dharma and artha and a practiser of dharma.)

अन्योन्यस्य प्रियाः सर्वे तथैव प्रियवादिनः। परैरभेद्याः सन्तुष्टाः को वो न स्पृहयेदिह ॥२-६९-१०॥
anyonyasya priyāḥ sarve tathaiva priyavādinaḥ। parairabhedyāḥ santuṣṭāḥ ko vo na spṛhayed iha ॥2-69-10॥
[अन्योन्यस्य (anyonyasya) - of one another; प्रियाः (priyāḥ) - dear; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; प्रियवादिनः (priyavādinaḥ) - speaking pleasantly; परैः (paraiḥ) - by others; अभेद्याः (abhedyāḥ) - not to be divided; सन्तुष्टाः (santuṣṭāḥ) - contented; कः (kaḥ) - who; वः (vaḥ) - of you; न (na) - not; स्पृहयेत् (spṛhayet) - would desire; इह (iha) - here;]
(All are dear to one another, just so, speaking pleasantly; by others not to be divided, contented; who of you here would not desire?)
All are dear to one another and speak pleasantly; they are united, content, and cannot be divided by others. Who here would not wish for you? (2-69-10)
एष वै सर्वकल्याणः समाधिस्तव भारत। नैनं शत्रुर्विषहते शक्रेणापि समोऽच्युत ॥२-६९-११॥
eṣa vai sarvakalyāṇaḥ samādhistava bhārata। nainaṃ śatrurviṣahate śakreṇāpi samo'cyuta ॥2-69-11॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; वै (vai) - indeed; सर्वकल्याणः (sarvakalyāṇaḥ) - all-auspicious; समाधिः (samādhiḥ) - concentration; तव (tava) - your; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; न (na) - not; एनम् (enam) - this; शत्रुः (śatruḥ) - enemy; विषहते (viṣahate) - overcomes; शक्रेणापि (śakreṇāpi) - even by Indra; समः (samaḥ) - equal; अच्युत (acyuta) - O infallible one;]
(This indeed all-auspicious concentration of yours, O Bhārata. Not this enemy overcomes, even by Indra, equal, O Acyuta (2-69-11).)
O Bhārata, this concentration of yours is all-auspicious indeed. Not even an enemy equal to Indra can overcome it, O Acyuta. (2-69-11)
हिमवत्यनुशिष्टोऽसि मेरुसावर्णिना पुरा। द्वैपायनेन कृष्णेन नगरे वारणावते ॥२-६९-१२॥
himavatyanuiṣṭo'si merusāvarṇinā purā। dvaipāyanena kṛṣṇena nagare vāraṇāvate ॥2-69-12॥
[हिमवत्यनुशिष्टः (himavatyanuiṣṭaḥ) - instructed by Himavat; असि (asi) - you are; मेरुसावर्णिना (merusāvarṇinā) - by Merusāvarṇi; पुरा (purā) - formerly; द्वैपायनेन (dvaipāyanena) - by Dvaipāyana; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; नगरे (nagare) - in the city; वारणावते (vāraṇāvate) - Vāraṇāvata;]
(You are instructed by Himavat, formerly by Merusāvarṇi, by Dvaipāyana Kṛṣṇa, in the city of Vāraṇāvata.)

भृगुतुङ्गे च रामेण दृषद्वत्यां च शम्भुना। अश्रौषीरसितस्यापि महर्षेरञ्जनं प्रति ॥२-६९-१३॥
bhṛgutuṅge ca rāmeṇa dṛṣadvatyāṃ ca śambhunā। aśrauṣīrasitasya api maharṣeḥ añjanam prati ॥2-69-13॥
[भृगुतुङ्गे (bhṛgutuṅge) - at Bhṛgu's peak; च (ca) - and; रामेण (rāmeṇa) - by Rāma; दृषद्वत्यां (dṛṣadvatyām) - on the Dṛṣadvatī (river); च (ca) - and; शम्भुना (śambhunā) - by Śambhu (Śiva); अश्रौषीत् (aśrauṣīt) - heard; असितस्य (asitasya) - of Asita; अपि (api) - also; महर्षेः (maharṣeḥ) - of the great sage; अञ्जनं (añjanam) - ointment; प्रति (prati) - regarding;]
(At Bhṛgu's peak and by Rāma, on the Dṛṣadvatī (river) and by Śambhu, he also heard regarding the ointment of the great sage Asita.)

द्रष्टा सदा नारदस्य धौम्यस्तेऽयं पुरोहितः। मा हार्षीः साम्पराये त्वं बुद्धिं तामृषिपूजिताम् ॥२-६९-१४॥
draṣṭā sadā nāradasya dhaumyaste'yaṃ purohitaḥ। mā hārṣīḥ sāmparāye tvaṃ buddhiṃ tām ṛṣipūjitām ॥2-69-14॥
[द्रष्टा (draṣṭā) - seer; observer; सदा (sadā) - always; नारदस्य (nāradasya) - of Nārada; धौम्यः (dhaumyaḥ) - Dhaumya; ते (te) - your; अयम् (ayam) - this; पुरोहितः (purohitaḥ) - priest; मा (mā) - do not; हार्षीः (hārṣīḥ) - rejoice; be elated; साम्पराये (sāmparāye) - in the crisis; at the time of calamity; त्वम् (tvam) - you; बुद्धिम् (buddhim) - intellect; wisdom; ताम् (tām) - that; ऋषिपूजिताम् (ṛṣipūjitām) - honored by sages;]
(The seer, always of Nārada, Dhaumya is your priest. Do not rejoice in crisis, you (should have) that intellect honored by sages.)
Dhaumya, who is always the seer of Nārada, is your priest. Do not be elated in times of crisis; you should possess that wisdom which is honored by sages. (2-69-14)
पुरूरवसमैलं त्वं बुद्ध्या जयसि पाण्डव। शक्त्या जयसि राज्ञोऽन्यानृषीन्धर्मोपसेवया ॥२-६९-१५॥
purūravasa-mailaṃ tvaṃ buddhyā jayasi pāṇḍava। śaktyā jayasi rājño'nyān ṛṣīn dharmopasevayā ॥2-69-15॥
[पुरूरवसमैलं (purūravasa-mailam) - Purūravas' impurity; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - by intellect; जयसि (jayasi) - you conquer; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; शक्त्या (śaktyā) - by strength; जयसि (jayasi) - you conquer; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of kings; अन्यान् (anyān) - others; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - sages; धर्मोपसेवया (dharmopasevayā) - by service to dharma;]
(You conquer the impurity of Purūravas by intellect, O Pāṇḍava. By strength you conquer other kings, and by service to dharma, sages.)
O Pāṇḍava, you overcome the impurity of Purūravas with intellect; you conquer other kings by strength, and sages by serving dharma. (2-69-15)
ऐन्द्रे जये धृतमना याम्ये कोपविधारणे। विसर्गे चैव कौबेरे वारुणे चैव संयमे ॥२-६९-१६॥
aindre jaye dhṛtamanā yāmye kopavidhāraṇe। visarge caiva kaubere vāruṇe caiva saṃyame ॥2-69-16॥
[ऐन्द्रे (aindre) - in Indra's (chariot); जये (jaye) - in victory; धृतमना (dhṛtamanā) - steadfast-minded; याम्ये (yāmye) - in Yama's (chariot); कोपविधारणे (kopavidhāraṇe) - in restraining anger; विसर्गे (visarge) - in letting go; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कौबेरे (kaubere) - in Kubera's (chariot); वारुणे (vāruṇe) - in Varuṇa's (chariot); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; संयमे (saṃyame) - in self-restraint;]
(In Indra's (chariot), in victory, steadfast-minded; in Yama's (chariot), in restraining anger; in letting go, and indeed, in Kubera's (chariot), in Varuṇa's (chariot), and indeed, in self-restraint.)
Steadfast in mind in Indra's chariot during victory, in Yama's chariot during the restraint of anger, in letting go, and likewise in Kubera's and Varuṇa's chariots, and in self-control. (2-69-16)
आत्मप्रदानं सौम्यत्वमद्भ्यश्चैवोपजीवनम्। भूमेः क्षमा च तेजश्च समग्रं सूर्यमण्डलात् ॥२-६९-१७॥
ātmapradānaṃ saumyatvamadbhyaścaivopajīvanam। bhūmeḥ kṣamā ca tejaśca samagraṃ sūryamaṇḍalāt ॥2-69-17॥
[आत्मप्रदानम् (ātmapradānam) - self-giving; सौम्यत्वम् (saumyatvam) - gentleness; अद्भ्यः (adbhyaḥ) - from waters; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; उपजीवनम् (upajīvanam) - subsistence; भूमेः (bhūmeḥ) - of the earth; क्षमा (kṣamā) - forbearance; च (ca) - and; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; च (ca) - and; समग्रम् (samagram) - entire; सूर्यमण्डलात् (sūryamaṇḍalāt) - from the solar orb;]
(Self-giving, gentleness, and subsistence from the waters; forbearance of the earth, and energy, the entire (comes) from the solar orb.)
Self-sacrifice, gentleness, and sustenance are derived from the waters; forbearance from the earth, and all energy from the solar orb. (2-69-17)
वायोर्बलं विद्धि स त्वं भूतेभ्यश्चात्मसम्भवम्। अगदं वोऽस्तु भद्रं वो द्रक्ष्यामि पुनरागतान् ॥२-६९-१८॥
vāyorbalaṃ viddhi sa tvaṃ bhūtebhyaścātmasambhavam। agadaṃ vo'stu bhadraṃ vo drakṣyāmi punarāgatān ॥2-69-18॥
[वायोः (vāyoḥ) - of wind; of Vāyu; बलम् (balam) - strength; power; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; understand; सः (saḥ) - he; that; त्वम् (tvam) - you; भूतेभ्यः (bhūtebhyaḥ) - from beings; from elements; च (ca) - and; आत्मसम्भवम् (ātmasambhavam) - originated from self; self-born; अगदम् (agadam) - medicine; antidote; वः (vaḥ) - for you; to you; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; may it be; भद्रम् (bhadram) - welfare; auspiciousness; वः (vaḥ) - for you; to you; द्रक्ष्यामि (drakṣyāmi) - I shall see; पुनरागतान् (punarāgatān) - those who have returned; returned again;]
(Know the strength of wind, that is you, and (your) self-born origin from the beings. Let the antidote be for you, let there be welfare for you. I shall see those who have returned again.)
Know that your strength is of the wind and your origin is self-born from the elements. May the antidote be with you, may you have welfare. I shall see you again when you return. (2-69-18)
आपद्धर्मार्थकृच्छ्रेषु सर्वकार्येषु वा पुनः। यथावत्प्रतिपद्येथाः काले काले युधिष्ठिर ॥२-६९-१९॥
āpaddharmārthakṛcchreṣu sarvakāryeṣu vā punaḥ। yathāvat pratipadyethāḥ kāle kāle yudhiṣṭhira ॥2-69-19॥
[आपत् (āpat) - calamity; धर्म (dharma) - righteousness; अर्थ (artha) - wealth; कृच्छ्रेषु (kṛcchreṣu) - difficulties; सर्व (sarva) - all; कार्येषु (kāryeṣu) - actions; वा (vā) - or; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; यथावत् (yathāvat) - properly; प्रतिपद्येथाः (pratipadyethāḥ) - you should act; काले काले (kāle kāle) - from time to time; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhishthira;]
(In calamity, righteousness, wealth, or difficulties, or again in all actions, you should act properly from time to time, O Yudhishthira.)
O Yudhishthira, whether in times of calamity, in matters of righteousness, wealth, or difficulty, or again in all undertakings, you should always act appropriately according to the time. (2-69-19)
आपृष्टोऽसीह कौन्तेय स्वस्ति प्राप्नुहि भारत। कृतार्थं स्वस्तिमन्तं त्वां द्रक्ष्यामः पुनरागतम् ॥२-६९-२०॥
āpṛṣṭo'sīha kaunteya svasti prāpnuhi bhārata। kṛtārthaṃ svastimantaṃ tvāṃ drakṣyāmaḥ punarāgatam ॥2-69-20॥
[आपृष्टः (āpṛṣṭaḥ) - having been asked; असि (asi) - you are; इह (iha) - here; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; प्राप्नुहि (prāpnuhu) - attain; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata; कृतार्थम् (kṛtārtham) - having accomplished the purpose; स्वस्तिमन्तम् (svastimantam) - endowed with well-being; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; द्रक्ष्यामः (drakṣyāmaḥ) - we shall see; पुनरागतम् (punarāgatam) - returned again;]
(Having been asked, you are here, O son of Kunti. Attain well-being, O descendant of Bharata. Having accomplished the purpose, endowed with well-being, you, we shall see returned again.)
You have been asked and are here, O son of Kunti. May you attain well-being, O Bharata. We shall see you again, having accomplished your purpose and endowed with well-being. (2-69-20)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

Vaiśampāyana said.
एवमुक्तस्तथेत्युक्त्वा पाण्डवः सत्यविक्रमः। भीष्मद्रोणौ नमस्कृत्य प्रातिष्ठत युधिष्ठिरः ॥२-६९-२१॥
evam-uktas-tathā-iti-uktvā pāṇḍavaḥ satya-vikramaḥ। bhīṣma-droṇau namaskṛtya prātiṣṭhata yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥2-69-21॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; तथा (tathā) - so; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pandu; सत्यविक्रमः (satya-vikramaḥ) - of true valor; भीष्मद्रोणौ (bhīṣma-droṇau) - Bhishma and Drona; नमस्कृत्य (namaskṛtya) - having bowed; प्रातिष्ठत (prātiṣṭhata) - set out; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(Thus having been spoken, so having said, the son of Pandu of true valor, having bowed to Bhishma and Drona, set out, Yudhishthira.)
When these words had been spoken, the valiant son of Pandu, Yudhishthira, after bowing to Bhishma and Drona, set out. (2-69-21)
