Pancharatra: Vyasa justifies his concern for Pandavas by narrating a story of Surabhi.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥

भगवन्नाहमप्येतद्रोचये द्यूतसंस्तवम्। मन्ये तद्विधिनाक्रम्य कारितोऽस्मीति वै मुने ॥३-१०-१॥
bhagavan nāham apy etad rocaye dyūta-saṃstavam। manye tad vidhinā akramya kāritaḥ asmi iti vai mune ॥3-10-1॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; अपि (api) - even; एतत् (etat) - this; रोचये (rocaye) - approve; द्यूत (dyūta) - gambling; संस्तवम् (saṃstavam) - praise; मन्ये (manye) - I think; तत् (tat) - that; विधिना (vidhinā) - by fate; अक्रम्य (akramya) - transgressing; कारितः (kāritaḥ) - caused to be done; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; वै (vai) - indeed; मुने (mune) - O sage;]
(O Lord, not I even this approve, gambling praise. I think that by fate, transgressing, caused to be done I am, thus indeed, O sage.)
O Lord, I do not approve of this praise of gambling. I think that, by fate, I have been made to act against the proper way, O sage. (3-10-1)
नैतद्रोचयते भीष्मो न द्रोणो विदुरो न च। गान्धारी नेच्छति द्यूतं तच्च मोहात्प्रवर्तितम् ॥३-१०-२॥
naitad rocayate bhīṣmo na droṇo viduro na ca। gāndhārī necchati dyūtaṃ tacca mohāt pravartitam ॥3-10-2॥
[न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; रोचयते (rocayate) - approves; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; न (na) - not; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Drona; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gandhari; न (na) - not; इच्छति (icchati) - desires; द्यूतम् (dyūtam) - dice-game; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; मोहात् (mohāt) - out of delusion; प्रवर्तितम् (pravartitam) - was initiated;]
(Not this approves Bhishma, not Drona, Vidura not and; Gandhari does not desire the dice-game, and that out of delusion was initiated.)
Neither Bhishma, nor Drona, nor Vidura approves of this; Gandhari does not desire the dice-game, and it was initiated out of delusion. (3-10-2)
परित्यक्तुं न शक्नोमि दुर्योधनमचेतनम्। पुत्रस्नेहेन भगवञ्जानन्नपि यतव्रत ॥३-१०-३॥
parityaktuṃ na śaknomi duryodhanam acetanam। putrasnehena bhagavañ jānann api yatavrata ॥3-10-3॥
[परित्यक्तुं (parityaktum) - to abandon completely; न (na) - not; शक्नोमि (śaknomi) - I am able; दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; अचेतनम् (acetanam) - unconscious; पुत्रस्नेहेन (putrasnehena) - by affection for (my) son; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; जानन् (jānan) - knowing; अपि (api) - even; यतव्रत (yatavrata) - one who is steadfast in vows;]
(To abandon completely not I am able Duryodhana unconscious; by affection for (my) son, O Lord, knowing even, one who is steadfast in vows.)
O Lord, even though I know, due to my affection for my son, I am not able to completely abandon the unconscious Duryodhana, O steadfast one in vows. (3-10-3)
व्यास उवाच॥

Vyāsa said.
वैचित्रवीर्य नृपते सत्यमाह यथा भवान्। दृढं वेद्मि परं पुत्रं परं पुत्रान्न विद्यते ॥३-१०-४॥
vaicitravīrya nṛpate satyam āha yathā bhavān। dṛḍhaṃ vedmi paraṃ putraṃ paraṃ putrān na vidyate॥3-10-4॥
[वैचित्रवीर्य (vaicitravīrya) - Vichitravirya; (proper name); नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; सत्यम् (satyam) - truth; आह (āha) - said; यथा (yathā) - as; भवान् (bhavān) - you; (honorific); दृढम् (dṛḍham) - firmly; वेद्मि (vedmi) - I know; परम् (param) - supreme; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; परम् (param) - higher; पुत्रात् (putrāt) - than a son; न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists;]
(Vichitravirya, O king, said the truth: As you (say), I firmly know (that) the supreme son, higher than a son, does not exist.)
Vichitravirya, the king, spoke the truth: "O king, as you say, I am certain that there is no one greater than a son." (3-10-4)
इन्द्रोऽप्यश्रुनिपातेन सुरभ्या प्रतिबोधितः। अन्यैः समृद्धैरप्यर्थैर्न सुताद्विद्यते परम् ॥३-१०-५॥
indro'py aśru-nipātena surabhyā pratibodhitaḥ। anyaiḥ samṛddhair apy arthair na sutād vidyate param ॥3-10-5॥
[इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; (the king of gods); अपि (api) - also; even; अश्रु-निपातेन (aśru-nipātena) - by the falling of tears; सुरभ्या (surabhyā) - by Surabhi; (the divine cow); प्रतिबोधितः (pratibodhitaḥ) - awakened; made aware; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by other; समृद्धैः (samṛddhaiḥ) - abundant; prosperous; अपि (api) - also; even; अर्थैः (arthaiḥ) - objects; means; riches; न (na) - not; सुतात् (sutāt) - from a son; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; परम् (param) - higher; superior;]
(Indra also, by the falling of tears, was awakened by Surabhi. By other abundant objects also, there is nothing superior to a son.)
Even Indra was awakened by Surabhi through her falling tears. There is nothing greater than a son, not even by other abundant riches. (3-10-5)
अत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि महदाख्यानमुत्तमम्। सुरभ्याश्चैव संवादमिन्द्रस्य च विशां पते ॥३-१०-६॥
atra te vartayiṣyāmi mahadākhyānamuttamam। surabhyāścaiva saṃvādamindrasya ca viśāṃ pate ॥3-10-6॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; ते (te) - to you; वर्तयिष्यामि (vartayiṣyāmi) - I shall narrate; महत् (mahat) - great; आख्यानम् (ākhyānam) - narrative; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; सुरभ्याः (surabhyāḥ) - of Surabhi; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; संवादम् (saṃvādam) - dialogue; इन्द्रस्य (indrasya) - of Indra; च (ca) - and; विशां (viśāṃ) - of the peoples; पते (pate) - lord;]
(Here to you I shall narrate a great excellent narrative, and indeed the dialogue of Surabhi and of Indra, O lord of the peoples.)
Here I will tell you a great and excellent story, namely the conversation between Surabhi and Indra, O lord of the people. (3-10-6)
त्रिविष्टपगता राजन्सुरभिः प्रारुदत्किल। गवां मात पुरा तात तामिन्द्रोऽन्वकृपायत ॥३-१०-७॥
triviṣṭapagatā rājan surabhiḥ prārudat kila। gavāṃ mātā purā tāta tām indro'nvakṛpāyata ॥3-10-7॥
[त्रिविष्टपगता (triviṣṭapagatā) - having gone to heaven; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सुरभिः (surabhiḥ) - Surabhi (the divine cow); प्रारुदत् (prārudat) - wept aloud; किल (kila) - indeed; गवां (gavām) - of cows; माता (mātā) - mother; पुरा (purā) - formerly; तात (tāta) - O dear one; ताम् (tām) - her; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; अन्वकृपायत (anvakṛpāyata) - felt compassion towards;]
(Having gone to heaven, O king, Surabhi, the mother of cows, indeed wept aloud formerly, O dear one; Indra felt compassion towards her.)
O king, once upon a time, Surabhi, the mother of cows, went to heaven and wept aloud; Indra felt compassion for her. (3-10-7)

(Indra said.)
Indra said.
किमिदं रोदिषि शुभे कच्चित्क्षेमं दिवौकसाम्। मानुषेष्वथ वा गोषु नैतदल्पं भविष्यति ॥३-१०-८॥
kimidaṃ rodiṣi śubhe kaccit kṣemaṃ divaukasām। mānuṣeṣv atha vā goṣu naitad alpaṃ bhaviṣyati ॥3-10-8॥
[किम् (kim) - what; इदं (idaṃ) - this; रोदिषि (rodiṣi) - you weep; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; क्षेमम् (kṣemam) - well-being; दिवौकसाम् (divaukasām) - of the dwellers of heaven; मानुषेषु (mānuṣeṣu) - among men; अथ (atha) - or; वा (vā) - or; गोषु (goṣu) - among cows; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; अल्पम् (alpam) - small; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(What is this, O auspicious one, that you weep? Is the well-being of the dwellers of heaven, or among men, or among cows, not small—will this not be (a small matter)?)
"What is this, O auspicious one, that you are weeping about? Is everything well with the dwellers of heaven, among men, or among cows? Surely, this will not be a small matter." (3-10-8)
सुरभिरुवाच॥
surabhiruvāca॥
[सुरभि (surabhi) - Surabhi; (the divine cow; proper noun); उवाच (uvāca) - said; (from the root 'vac' - to speak);]
(Surabhi said;)
Surabhi said.
विनिपातो न वः कश्चिद्दृश्यते त्रिदशाधिप। अहं तु पुत्रं शोचामि तेन रोदिमि कौशिक ॥३-१०-९॥
vinipāto na vaḥ kaścid dṛśyate tridaśādhipa। ahaṃ tu putraṃ śocāmi tena rodimi kauśika ॥3-10-9॥
[विनिपातः (vinipātaḥ) - falling down; downward movement; न (na) - not; वः (vaḥ) - to you; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; त्रिदशाधिप (tridaśādhipa) - O lord of the gods; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; तु (tu) - but; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; शोचामि (śocāmi) - I grieve; तेन (tena) - for that reason; रोदिमि (rodimi) - I weep; कौशिक (kauśika) - O Kauśika;]
(Falling down is not seen for you, O lord of the gods; but I grieve for my son, for that reason I weep, O Kauśika.)
O lord of the gods, no one among you is seen to fall; but I grieve for my son, and for that reason I weep, O Kauśika. (3-10-9)
पश्यैनं कर्षकं रौद्रं दुर्बलं मम पुत्रकम्। प्रतोदेनाभिनिघ्नन्तं लाङ्गलेन निपीडितम् ॥३-१०-१०॥
paśyainaṃ karṣakaṃ raudraṃ durbalaṃ mama putrakam। pratodenābhinighnantaṃ lāṅgalena nipīḍitam ॥3-10-10॥
[पश्य (paśya) - see; एनम् (enam) - this; कर्षकं (karṣakam) - ploughman; रौद्रं (raudram) - fierce; दुर्बलं (durbalam) - weak; मम (mama) - my; पुत्रकम् (putrakam) - little son; प्रतोदेन (pratodena) - with a goad; अभिनिघ्नन्तं (abhinighnantaṃ) - striking; लाङ्गलेन (lāṅgalena) - with a plough; निपीडितम् (nipīḍitam) - oppressed;]
(See this ploughman, fierce, weak, my little son, striking with a goad, oppressed with a plough.)
Look at this ploughman, fierce yet weak, my little son, being struck with a goad and oppressed by the plough. (3-10-10)
एतं दृष्ट्वा भृशं श्रन्तं वध्यमानं सुराधिप। कृपाविष्टास्मि देवेन्द्र मनश्चोद्विजते मम ॥३-१०-११॥
etaṃ dṛṣṭvā bhṛśaṃ śrantaṃ vadhyamānaṃ surādhipa। kṛpāviṣṭāsmi devendra manaścodvijate mama ॥3-10-11॥
[एतं (etaṃ) - this (one); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; भृशं (bhṛśam) - exceedingly; श्रन्तं (śrantam) - exhausted; वध्यमानं (vadhyamānam) - being slain; सुराधिप (surādhipa) - O lord of the gods; कृपाविष्टा (kṛpāviṣṭā) - filled with compassion; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; देवेन्द्र (devendra) - O Indra; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; च (ca) - and; उद्विजते (udvijate) - is agitated; मम (mama) - my;]
(O lord of the gods, having seen this one exceedingly exhausted and being slain, O Indra, I am filled with compassion, and my mind is agitated.)
O Indra, seeing this one so utterly exhausted and being slain, I am overcome with compassion, and my mind is deeply disturbed. (3-10-11)
एकस्तत्र बलोपेतो धुरमुद्वहतेऽधिकाम्। अपरोऽल्पबलप्राणः कृशो धमनिसन्ततः ॥ कृच्छ्रादुद्वहते भारं तं वै शोचामि वासव ॥३-१०-१२॥
ekas tatra balopeto dhuram udvahate'dhikām। aparo'lpabalaprāṇaḥ kṛśo dhamanisantataḥ॥ kṛcchrād udvahate bhāraṃ taṃ vai śocāmi vāsava॥3-10-12॥
[एकः (ekaḥ) - one; तत्र (tatra) - there; बलोपेतः (balopetaḥ) - endowed with strength; धुरम् (dhuram) - yoke; उद्वहते (udvahate) - carries; अधिकाम् (adhikām) - more; अपरः (aparaḥ) - another; अल्पबलप्राणः (alpabalaprāṇaḥ) - of little strength and life; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - thin; धमनि-सन्ततः (dhamani-santataḥ) - with veins visible; कृच्छ्रात् (kṛcchrāt) - with difficulty; उद्वहते (udvahate) - carries; भारम् (bhāram) - burden; तम् (tam) - him; वै (vai) - indeed; शोचामि (śocāmi) - I grieve; वासव (vāsava) - O Indra;]
(One there, endowed with strength, carries a greater yoke; another, of little strength and life, thin, with veins visible, with difficulty carries the burden; him indeed I grieve for, O Indra.)
There, one who is strong bears a heavier yoke, while another, weak and frail, with veins showing, struggles to carry the burden; O Indra, it is for him that I feel sorrow. (3-10-12)
वध्यमानः प्रतोदेन तुद्यमानः पुनः पुनः। नैव शक्नोति तं भारमुद्वोढुं पश्य वासव ॥३-१०-१३॥
vadhyamānaḥ pratodena tudyamānaḥ punaḥ punaḥ। naiva śaknoti taṃ bhāramudvoḍhuṃ paśya vāsava ॥3-10-13॥
[वध्यमानः (vadhyamānaḥ) - being beaten; प्रतोदेन (pratodena) - with a goad; तुद्यमानः (tudyamānaḥ) - being struck; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; शक्नोति (śaknoti) - is able; तं (taṃ) - that; भारम् (bhāram) - burden; उद्वोढुम् (udvoḍhum) - to lift; पश्य (paśya) - see; वासव (vāsava) - O Indra;]
(Being beaten with a goad, being struck again and again, he is not indeed able to lift that burden; see, O Indra.)
See, O Indra, though he is beaten with a goad and struck repeatedly, he is still unable to lift that burden. (3-10-13)
ततोऽहं तस्य दुःखार्ता विरौमि भृशदुःखिता। अश्रूण्यावर्तयन्ती च नेत्राभ्यां करुणायती ॥३-१०-१४॥
tato'ham tasya duḥkhārtā viroumi bhṛśaduḥkhitā। aśrūṇyāvartayantī ca netrābhyāṃ karuṇāyatī ॥3-10-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; तस्य (tasya) - of him; दुःखार्ता (duḥkhārtā) - afflicted by sorrow; विरौमि (viroumi) - I cry aloud; भृशदुःखिता (bhṛśaduḥkhitā) - greatly distressed; अश्रूणि (aśrūṇi) - tears; आवर्तयन्ती (āvartayantī) - rolling; च (ca) - and; नेत्राभ्याम् (netrābhyām) - from the two eyes; करुणायती (karuṇāyatī) - lamenting with compassion;]
(Then I, afflicted by his sorrow, greatly distressed, cry aloud, rolling tears and lamenting with compassion from my two eyes.)
Then, overwhelmed by his sorrow and deeply distressed, I cried out, tears rolling from both my eyes as I wept with compassion. (3-10-14)

Indra said.
तव पुत्रसहस्रेषु पीड्यमानेषु शोभने। किं कृपायितमस्त्यत्र पुत्र एकोऽत्र पीड्यते ॥३-१०-१५॥
tava putrasahasreṣu pīḍyamāneṣu śobhane। kiṃ kṛpāyitam asty atra putra eko 'tra pīḍyate ॥3-10-15॥
[तव (tava) - your; पुत्रसहस्रेषु (putrasahasreṣu) - among thousands of sons; पीड्यमानेषु (pīḍyamāneṣu) - being afflicted; शोभने (śobhane) - O beautiful one; किं (kiṃ) - what; कृपायितम् (kṛpāyitam) - compassion; अस्ति (asti) - is; अत्र (atra) - here; पुत्र (putra) - son; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; अत्र (atra) - here; पीड्यते (pīḍyate) - is afflicted;]
(Among your thousands of sons being afflicted, O beautiful one, what compassion is here? Here only one son is afflicted.)
O beautiful one, among your thousands of sons being afflicted, what compassion is there here? Here, only one son is afflicted. (3-10-15)
सुरभिरुवाच॥

यदि पुत्रसहस्रं मे सर्वत्र सममेव मे। दीनस्य तु सतः शक्र पुत्रस्याभ्यधिका कृपा ॥३-१०-१६॥
yadi putrasahasraṃ me sarvatra samameva me। dīnasya tu sataḥ śakra putrasyābhyadhikā kṛpā ॥3-10-16॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; पुत्रसहस्रं (putrasahasraṃ) - a thousand sons; मे (me) - to me; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; समम् (samam) - equally; एव (eva) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; दीनस्य (dīnasya) - of the afflicted; तु (tu) - but; सतः (sataḥ) - of the existing; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra; पुत्रस्य (putrasya) - of the son; अभ्यधिका (abhyadhikā) - exceeding; कृपा (kṛpā) - compassion;]
(If a thousand sons are mine everywhere equally indeed to me, but, O Śakra, for the afflicted existing son, the compassion is exceeding.)
Even if I had a thousand sons everywhere, O Śakra, my compassion for the one afflicted son would be greater. (3-10-16)
व्यास उवाच॥

तदिन्द्रः सुरभीवाक्यं निशम्य भृशविस्मितः। जीवितेनापि कौरव्य मेनेऽभ्यधिकमात्मजम् ॥३-१०-१७॥
tadindraḥ surabhīvākyaṃ niśamya bhṛśavismitaḥ। jīvitena api kauravya mene'bhiyadhikam ātmajam ॥3-10-17॥
[तत् (tat) - then; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; सुरभी (surabhī) - Surabhi; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; निशम्य (niśamya) - having heard; भृश (bhṛśa) - greatly; विस्मितः (vismitaḥ) - astonished; जीवितेन (jīvitena) - with life; अपि (api) - even; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; मेने (mene) - considered; अभ्यधिकम् (abhyadhikam) - greater than; आत्मजम् (ātmajam) - his own son;]
(Then Indra, having heard the words of Surabhi, was greatly astonished; O descendant of Kuru, he considered his own son to be even greater than life.)
Then Indra, upon hearing Surabhi's words, was greatly astonished; O Kauravya, he regarded his own son as dearer than his own life. (3-10-17)
प्रववर्ष च तत्रैव सहसा तोयमुल्बणम्। कर्षकस्याचरन्विघ्नं भगवान्पाकशासनः ॥३-१०-१८॥
pravavarṣa ca tatraiva sahasā toyam ulbaṇam। karṣakasya ācaran vighnam bhagavān pākāśāsanaḥ ॥3-10-18॥
[प्रववर्ष (pravavarṣa) - rained forth; च (ca) - and; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - right there; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; तोयम् (toyam) - water; उल्बणम् (ulbaṇam) - abundant; कर्षकस्य (karṣakasya) - of the farmer; आचरन् (ācaran) - causing; विघ्नम् (vighnam) - obstacle; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered; पाकशासनः (pākāśāsanaḥ) - Indra;]
(And right there suddenly abundant water rained forth, causing an obstacle for the farmer, the revered Indra.)
Then, right there, the revered Indra suddenly caused a heavy rain, creating an obstacle for the farmer. (3-10-18)
तद्यथा सुरभिः प्राह सममेवास्तु ते तथा। सुतेषु राजन्सर्वेषु दीनेष्वभ्यधिका कृपा ॥३-१०-१९॥
tadyathā surabhiḥ prāha samamevāstu te tathā। suteṣu rājansarveṣu dīneṣvabhyadhikā kṛpā ॥3-10-19॥
[तद् (tad) - that; यथा (yathā) - as; सुरभिः (surabhiḥ) - Surabhi (the divine cow); प्राह (prāha) - spoke; समम् (samam) - equally; एव (eva) - indeed; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; ते (te) - for you; तथा (tathā) - so; सुतेषु (suteṣu) - among sons; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - among all; दीनेषु (dīneṣu) - among the poor; अभ्यधिका (abhyadhikā) - exceeding; कृपा (kṛpā) - compassion;]
(That as Surabhi spoke, let it be so equally for you. Among sons, O king, among all, among the poor, compassion exceeding.)
Just as Surabhi spoke, so let it be for you as well. O king, among all your sons and especially among the poor, let your compassion be greater. (3-10-19)
यादृशो मे सुतः पण्डुस्तादृशो मेऽसि पुत्रक। विदुरश्च महाप्राज्ञः स्नेहादेतद्ब्रवीम्यहम् ॥३-१०-२०॥
yādṛśo me sutaḥ paṇḍustādṛśo me'si putraka। viduraśca mahāprājñaḥ snehādetadbravīmyaham ॥3-10-20॥

(Of what kind my son Pandu was, such you are, dear son. Vidura also is greatly wise. Out of affection, this I say, I.)
You are just like my son Pandu, dear child. Vidura too is greatly wise. I say this out of affection. (3-10-20)
चिराय तव पुत्राणां शतमेकश्च पार्थिव। पाण्डोः पञ्चैव लक्ष्यन्ते तेऽपि मन्दाः सुदुःखिताः ॥३-१०-२१॥
cirāya tava putrāṇāṃ śatamekaśca pārthiva। pāṇḍoḥ pañcaiva lakṣyante te'pi mandāḥ suduḥkhitāḥ ॥3-10-21॥
[चिराय (cirāya) - for a long time; तव (tava) - your; पुत्राणां (putrāṇām) - of sons; शतम् (śatam) - hundred; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; च (ca) - and; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; पाण्डोः (pāṇḍoḥ) - of Pāṇḍu; पञ्च (pañca) - five; एव (eva) - indeed; लक्ष्यन्ते (lakṣyante) - are seen; ते (te) - they; अपि (api) - also; मन्दाः (mandāḥ) - weak; सुदुःखिताः (suduḥkhitāḥ) - very sorrowful;]
(For a long time, of your sons, a hundred and one, O king, of Pāṇḍu, five indeed are seen; they also (are) weak, very sorrowful.)
O king, for a long time, your hundred and one sons have been seen, and as for Pāṇḍu's sons, only five remain; even they are weak and deeply sorrowful. (3-10-21)
कथं जीवेयुरत्यन्तं कथं वर्धेयुरित्यपि। इति दीनेषु पार्थेषु मनो मे परितप्यते ॥३-१०-२२॥
kathaṁ jīveyur atyantaṁ kathaṁ vardheyur ity api। iti dīneṣu pārtheṣu mano me paritapyate ॥3-10-22॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; जीवेयुः (jīveyuḥ) - might live; अत्यन्तं (atyantam) - completely; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; वर्धेयुः (vardheyuḥ) - might prosper; इति (iti) - thus; दीनेषु (dīneṣu) - in the distressed; पार्थेषु (pārtheṣu) - in the sons of Pṛthā; मन् (manas) - mind; मे (me) - my; परितप्यते (paritapyate) - is tormented;]
(How might they live completely, how might they prosper—thus, in the distressed sons of Pṛthā, my mind is tormented.)
My mind is tormented with concern for the distressed sons of Pṛthā, thinking, 'How will they live, how will they prosper?' (3-10-22)
यदि पार्थिव कौरव्याञ्जीवमानानिहेच्छसि। दुर्योधनस्तव सुतः शमं गच्छतु पाण्डवैः ॥३-१०-२३॥
yadi pārthiva kauravyān jīvamānān iha icchasi। duryodhanaḥ tava sutaḥ śamaṃ gacchatu pāṇḍavaiḥ ॥3-10-23॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; कौरव्याञ् (kauravyān) - the Kauravas; जीवमानान् (jīvamānān) - living; इह (iha) - here; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; तव (tava) - your; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; शमं (śamam) - peace; गच्छतु (gacchatu) - should attain; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pāṇḍavas;]
(If, O king, you desire the Kauravas living here, let your son Duryodhana attain peace with the Pāṇḍavas.)
O king, if you wish the Kauravas to remain alive here, let your son Duryodhana make peace with the Pāṇḍavas. (3-10-23)
