Pancharatra: Vyasa asks Dhritarashtra to listen to Maitreya and disappears.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca॥
[धृतराष्ट्र (dhṛtarāṣṭra) - Dhritarashtra; (name of the king) उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

Dhritarashtra said.
एवमेतन्महाप्राज्ञ यथा वदसि नो मुने। अहं चैव विजानामि सर्वे चेमे नराधिपाः ॥३-११-१॥
evam etan mahāprājña yathā vadasi no mune। ahaṃ caiva vijānāmi sarve ca ime narādhipāḥ ॥3-11-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; in this way; एतत् (etat) - this; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - O greatly wise one; यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; वदसि (vadasi) - you speak; you say; नः (naḥ) - to us; for us; मुने (mune) - O sage; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; विजानामि (vijānāmi) - I know; सर्वे (sarve) - all; च (ca) - and; इमे (ime) - these; नराधिपाः (narādhipāḥ) - kings; rulers of men;]
(Thus this, O greatly wise one, as you speak to us, O sage; I also indeed know, and all these kings.)
O greatly wise one, it is just as you say to us, O sage; I too know this, and so do all these kings. (3-11-1)
भवांस्तु मन्यते साधु यत्कुरूणां सुखोदयम्। तदेव विदुरोऽप्याह भीष्मो द्रोणश्च मां मुने ॥३-११-२॥
bhavāṃs tu manyate sādhu yat kurūṇāṃ sukhodayam। tad eva viduro'py āha bhīṣmo droṇaś ca māṃ mune ॥3-11-2॥
[भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); तु (tu) - but; मन्यते (manyate) - thinks; साधु (sādhu) - good; यत् (yat) - that; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; सुखोदयम् (sukhodayam) - arising of happiness; तत् (tat) - that; एव (eva) - indeed; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; अपि (api) - also; आह (āha) - said; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Drona; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - to me; मुने (mune) - O sage;]
(You, however, think good that which is the arising of happiness for the Kurus; that indeed Vidura also said, Bhishma and Drona and to me, O sage.)
You, however, consider that which brings happiness to the Kurus as good; the same was also said by Vidura, Bhishma, Drona, and to me, O sage. (3-11-2)
यदि त्वहमनुग्राह्यः कौरवेषु दया यदि। अनुशाधि दुरात्मानं पुत्रं दुर्योधनं मम ॥३-११-३॥
yadi tv aham anugrāhyaḥ kauraveṣu dayā yadi। anuśādhi durātmānaṃ putraṃ duryodhanaṃ mama ॥3-11-3॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; त्व (tv) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; अनुग्राह्यः (anugrāhyaḥ) - worthy of favor; कौरवेषु (kauraveṣu) - among the Kauravas; दया (dayā) - compassion; यदि (yadi) - if; अनुशाधि (anuśādhi) - instruct; दुरात्मानम् (durātmānam) - wicked-souled; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; मम (mama) - my;]
(If you, I, worthy of favor, among the Kauravas, compassion, if; instruct wicked-souled son Duryodhana my.)
If I am worthy of your favor among the Kauravas, and if you have compassion, then instruct my wicked-souled son Duryodhana. (3-11-3)
व्यास उवाच॥

अयमायाति वै राजन्मैत्रेयो भगवानृषिः। अन्वीय पाण्डवान्भ्रातॄनिहैवास्मद्दिदृक्षया ॥३-११-४॥
ayam āyāti vai rājan maitreyo bhagavān ṛṣiḥ। anvīya pāṇḍavān bhrātṝn iha eva asmat didṛkṣayā ॥3-11-4॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; (person); आयाति (āyāti) - comes; approaches; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मैत्रेयः (maitreyaḥ) - Maitreya; (name); भगवान् (bhagavān) - venerable; illustrious; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; अन्वीय (anvīya) - having followed; pursuing; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; इह (iha) - here; एव (eva) - indeed; just; अस्मत् (asmat) - us; दिदृक्षया (didṛkṣayā) - with the desire to see;]
(This indeed comes, O king, Maitreya, the venerable sage; having followed the Pāṇḍava brothers, here indeed, us, with the desire to see.)
O king, this venerable sage Maitreya is coming here, having followed the Pāṇḍava brothers, with the desire to see us. (3-11-4)
एष दुर्योधनं पुत्रं तव राजन्महानृषिः। अनुशास्ता यथान्यायं शमायास्य कुलस्य ते ॥३-११-५॥
eṣa duryodhanaṃ putraṃ tava rājan mahānṛṣiḥ। anuśāstā yathānyāyaṃ śamāyāsya kulasya te ॥3-11-5॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; दुर्योधनं (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana (name); पुत्रं (putram) - son; तव (tava) - your; राजन् (rājan) - O king; महानृषिः (mahānṛṣiḥ) - great sage; अनुशास्ता (anuśāstā) - instructor; यथा (yathā) - according as; अन्यायं (anyāyam) - impropriety; शमाय (śamāya) - for the peace; अस्य (asya) - of him; कुलस्य (kulasya) - of the family; ते (te) - your;]
(This Duryodhana, son your O king, the great sage, instructor, according as impropriety, for the peace, of him, of the family, your.)
O king, the great sage is instructing your son Duryodhana according to propriety, for the peace of your family. (3-11-5)
ब्रूयाद्यदेष राजेन्द्र तत्कार्यमविशङ्कया। अक्रियायां हि कार्यस्य पुत्रं ते शप्स्यते रुषा ॥३-११-६॥
brūyādyadeṣa rājendra tat kāryam aviśaṅkayā। akriyāyāṃ hi kāryasya putraṃ te śapsyate ruṣā ॥3-11-6॥
[ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - should say; यत् (yat) - that which; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; तत् (tat) - that; कार्यं (kāryam) - action; अविशङ्कया (aviśaṅkayā) - without hesitation; अक्रियायाम् (akriyāyām) - in non-performance; हि (hi) - indeed; कार्यस्य (kāryasya) - of the action; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; ते (te) - your; शप्स्यते (śapsyate) - will be cursed; रुषा (ruṣā) - with anger;]
(He should say, O king, that this action is to be done without hesitation; indeed, in the non-performance of the action, your son will be cursed with anger.)
O King, he should declare that this action must be performed without hesitation; for if the action is not done, your son will surely be cursed in anger. (3-11-6)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

Vaiśampāyana said.
एवमुक्त्वा ययौ व्यासो मैत्रेयः प्रत्यदृश्यत। पूजया प्रतिजग्राह सपुत्रस्तं नराधिपः ॥३-११-७॥
evam uktvā yayau vyāso maitreyaḥ pratyadṛśyata. pūjayā pratijagrāha saputras taṃ narādhipaḥ ॥3-11-7॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; ययौ (yayau) - departed; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; मैत्रेयः (maitreyaḥ) - Maitreya; प्रत्यदृश्यत (pratyadṛśyata) - became visible; पूजया (pūjayā) - with worship; प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - received; सपुत्रः (saputraḥ) - with son; तम् (tam) - him; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - the king;]
(Thus having spoken, Vyāsa departed; Maitreya became visible. With worship, the king together with his son received him.)
After speaking thus, Vyāsa departed; Maitreya appeared. The king, along with his son, received him with worship. (3-11-7)
दत्त्वार्घ्याद्याः क्रियाः सर्वा विश्रान्तं मुनिपुङ्गवम्। प्रश्रयेणाब्रवीद्राजा धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः ॥३-११-८॥
dattvārghyādyāḥ kriyāḥ sarvā viśrāntaṃ munipuṅgavam। praśrayeṇābravīdrājā dhṛtarāṣṭro’mbikāsutaḥ ॥3-11-8॥
[दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; अर्घ्य (arghya) - offering of water; आद्याः (ādyāḥ) - and other (rites); क्रियाः (kriyāḥ) - acts; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; विश्रान्तम् (viśrāntam) - rested; मुनिपुङ्गवम् (munipuṅgavam) - the foremost sage; प्रश्रयेण (praśrayeṇa) - with humility; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; राजा (rājā) - the king; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; अम्बिकासुतः (ambikāsutaḥ) - the son of Ambika;]
(Having given arghya and other acts, all, to the rested foremost sage, with humility spoke the king Dhritarashtra, the son of Ambika.)
After performing all the rites such as offering arghya to the sage who had rested, King Dhritarashtra, the son of Ambika, spoke with humility. (3-11-8)
सुखेनागमनं कच्चिद्भगवन्कुरुजाङ्गले। कच्चित्कुशलिनो वीरा भ्रातरः पञ्च पाण्डवाः ॥३-११-९॥
sukhenāgamanaṃ kaccid bhagavan kurujāṅgale। kaccit kuśalino vīrā bhrātaraḥ pañca pāṇḍavāḥ ॥3-11-9॥
[सुखेन (sukhena) - with ease; by happiness; आगमनम् (āgamanam) - arrival; coming; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; is it so; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; O lord; कुरुजाङ्गले (kurujāṅgale) - in the land of the Kurus; in Kurujāṅgala; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; is it so; कुशलिनः (kuśalinaḥ) - well; safe; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; warriors; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; पञ्च (pañca) - five; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the sons of Pāṇḍu; Pāṇḍavas;]
(With ease arrival whether O venerable one in the land of the Kurus; whether well heroes brothers five Pāṇḍavas;)
O venerable one, did you arrive easily in the land of the Kurus? Are the five heroic brothers, the Pāṇḍavas, well? (3-11-9)
समये स्थातुमिच्छन्ति कच्चिच्च पुरुषर्षभाः। कच्चित्कुरूणां सौभ्रात्रमव्युच्छिन्नं भविष्यति ॥३-११-१०॥
samaye sthātum icchanti kaccic ca puruṣarṣabhāḥ। kaccit kurūṇāṃ saubhrātram avyucchinnaṃ bhaviṣyati ॥3-11-10॥
[समये (samaye) - at the proper time; स्थातुम् (sthātum) - to stand; to remain; इच्छन्ति (icchanti) - they desire; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; surely; च (ca) - and; पुरुषर्षभाः (puruṣarṣabhāḥ) - bulls among men; best of men; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; surely; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; सौभ्रात्रम् (saubhrātram) - brotherhood; friendship among brothers; अव्युच्छिन्नम् (avyucchinnam) - unbroken; uninterrupted; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; will exist;]
(At the proper time to stand they desire, whether also the best of men; whether of the Kurus the brotherhood unbroken will be.)
Do the foremost among men wish to remain at the proper time? Will the brotherhood of the Kurus remain unbroken? (3-11-10)
मैत्रेय उवाच॥

तीर्थयात्रामनुक्रामन्प्राप्तोऽस्मि कुरुजाङ्गलम्। यदृच्छया धर्मराजं दृष्टवान्काम्यके वने ॥३-११-११॥
tīrthayātrāmanukrāmanprāpto'smi kurujāṅgalam। yadṛcchayā dharmarājaṃ dṛṣṭavānkāmyake vane ॥3-11-11॥
[तीर्थयात्राम् (tīrthayātrām) - pilgrimage; (accusative singular); अनुक्रामन् (anukrāman) - following; (present participle); प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - having reached; (masculine nominative singular); अस्मि (asmi) - I am; कुरुजाङ्गलम् (kurujāṅgalam) - Kuru-jāṅgala; (a region); यदृच्छया (yadṛcchayā) - by chance; धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - Dharmarāja; (Yudhiṣṭhira); दृष्टवान् (dṛṣṭavān) - having seen; काम्यके (kāmyake) - in Kāmyaka; (locative singular); वने (vane) - in the forest; (locative singular);]
(Following the pilgrimage, having reached Kuru-jāṅgala, I am; by chance, Dharmarāja having seen, in Kāmyaka, in the forest.)
While following the pilgrimage, I reached Kuru-jāṅgala; by chance, I saw Dharmarāja in the Kāmyaka forest. (3-11-11)
तं जटाजिनसंवीतं तपोवननिवासिनम्। समाजग्मुर्महात्मानं द्रष्टुं मुनिगणाः प्रभो ॥३-११-१२॥
taṃ jaṭā-jina-saṃvītaṃ tapovana-nivāsinam। samājagmur mahātmānaṃ draṣṭuṃ muni-gaṇāḥ prabho ॥3-11-12॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; जटा (jaṭā) - matted hair; अजिन (ajina) - deerskin; संवीतम् (saṃvītam) - clad; तपोवन (tapovana) - penance-forest; निवासिनम् (nivāsinam) - dwelling; सम् (sam) - together; आ (ā) - towards; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - great-souled; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; मुनिगणाः (munigaṇāḥ) - groups of sages; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(Him, matted hair, deerskin, clad, penance-forest, dwelling; together, towards, went; great-souled, to see; groups of sages, O lord;)
O lord, groups of sages went together to see that great-souled one who was dwelling in the penance-forest, clad in matted hair and deerskin. (3-11-12)
तत्राश्रौषं महाराज पुत्राणां तव विभ्रमम्। अनयं द्यूतरूपेण महापायमुपस्थितम् ॥३-११-१३॥
tatrāśrauṣaṃ mahārāja putrāṇāṃ tava vibhramam। anayaṃ dyūtarūpeṇa mahāpāyamupasthitam ॥3-11-13॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अश्रौषम् (aśrauṣam) - I heard; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; पुत्राणाम् (putrāṇām) - of the sons; तव (tava) - your; विभ्रमम् (vibhramam) - confusion; अनयम् (anayam) - misfortune; द्यूतरूपेण (dyūtarūpeṇa) - in the form of dice; महापायम् (mahāpāyam) - great danger; उपस्थितम् (upasthitam) - arrived;]
(There I heard, O great king, the confusion of your sons; the misfortune in the form of dice, the great danger, had arrived.)
There, O great king, I heard of the confusion of your sons; the misfortune in the form of dice, a great danger, had arrived. (3-11-13)
ततोऽहं त्वामनुप्राप्तः कौरवाणामवेक्षया। सदा ह्यभ्यधिकः स्नेहः प्रीतिश्च त्वयि मे प्रभो ॥३-११-१४॥
tato'haṃ tvāmanuprāptaḥ kauravāṇāmavekṣayā। sadā hyabhyadhikaḥ snehaḥ prītiśca tvayi me prabho ॥3-11-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अनुप्राप्तः (anuprāptaḥ) - having approached; having come to; कौरवाणाम् (kauravāṇām) - of the Kauravas; अवेक्षया (avekṣayā) - out of consideration; by regard; सदा (sadā) - always; हि (hi) - indeed; अभ्यधिकः (abhyadhikaḥ) - exceeding; greater; स्नेहः (snehaḥ) - affection; love; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - delight; pleasure; च (ca) - and; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; towards you; मे (me) - my; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(Then I, having approached you out of consideration for the Kauravas, always indeed have exceeding affection and delight in you, O lord.)
Therefore, having come to you out of regard for the Kauravas, I have always had greater affection and love for you, O lord. (3-11-14)
नैतदौपयिकं राजंस्त्वयि भीष्मे च जीवति। यदन्योन्येन ते पुत्रा विरुध्यन्ते नराधिप ॥३-११-१५॥
naitadaupayikaṃ rājaṃstvayi bhīṣme ca jīvati। yadanyonyena te putrā virudhyante narādhipa ॥3-11-15॥
[न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; औपयिकम् (aupayikam) - proper; suitable; राजन् (rājan) - O king; त्वयि (tvayi) - when you; भीष्मे (bhīṣme) - Bhishma; च (ca) - and; जीवति (jīvati) - is living; यत् (yat) - that; अन्योन्येन (anyonyena) - with each other; ते (te) - your; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; विरुध्यन्ते (virudhyante) - are opposing; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O ruler of men;]
(Not this proper O king when you and Bhishma are living, that with each other your sons are opposing O ruler of men.)
O king, it is not proper that your sons oppose each other while you and Bhishma are still living, O ruler of men. (3-11-15)
मेढीभूतः स्वयं राजन्निग्रहे प्रग्रहे भवान्। किमर्थमनयं घोरमुत्पतन्तमुपेक्षसे ॥३-११-१६॥
meḍhībhūtaḥ svayaṃ rājannigrahe pragrahe bhavān। kimarthamanayaṃ ghoramutpatantamupekṣase ॥3-11-16॥
[मेढीभूतः (meḍhībhūtaḥ) - having become a post; स्वयम् (svayam) - oneself; राजन् (rājan) - O king; निग्रहे (nigrahe) - in restraint; प्रग्रहे (pragrahe) - in control; भवान् (bhavān) - you; किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what reason; अनयम् (anayam) - this; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; उत्पतन्तम् (utpatantam) - rising; उपेक्षसे (upekṣase) - you neglect;]
(Having become a post oneself, O king, in restraint and control, you, for what reason, this terrible rising (thing) do you neglect?)
O king, having yourself become like a post in restraint and control, why do you neglect this terrible thing that is rising? (3-11-16)
दस्यूनामिव यद्वृत्तं सभायां कुरुनन्दन। तेन न भ्राजसे राजंस्तापसानां समागमे ॥३-११-१७॥
dasyūnām iva yad vṛttaṃ sabhāyāṃ kurunandana। tena na bhrājase rājan tāpasānāṃ samāgame ॥3-11-17॥
[दस्यूनाम् (dasyūnām) - of bandits; इव (iva) - like; as if; यत् (yat) - which; what; वृत्तम् (vṛttam) - conduct; behavior; act; सभायाम् (sabhāyām) - in the assembly; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O delight of the Kurus; O Kurunandana; तेन (tena) - by that; with that; न (na) - not; भ्राजसे (bhrājase) - you shine; you are resplendent; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तापसानाम् (tāpasānām) - of ascetics; समागमे (samāgame) - in the assembly; in the gathering;]
(O delight of the Kurus, the conduct in the assembly which was like that of bandits, by that, O king, you do not shine in the gathering of ascetics.)
O Kurunandana, the behavior in the assembly, which was like that of bandits, does not make you shine, O king, in the company of ascetics. (3-11-17)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततो व्यावृत्य राजानं दुर्योधनममर्षणम्। उवाच श्लक्ष्णया वाचा मैत्रेयो भगवानृषिः ॥३-११-१८॥
tato vyāvṛtya rājānaṃ duryodhanam amarṣaṇam। uvāca ślakṣṇayā vācā maitreyo bhagavān ṛṣiḥ ॥3-11-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; व्यावृत्य (vyāvṛtya) - having turned away; having withdrawn; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; (accusative singular); दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; (accusative singular); अमर्षणम् (amarṣaṇam) - unforbearing; impatient; उवाच (uvāca) - said; spoke; श्लक्ष्णया (ślakṣṇayā) - gentle; soft; वाचा (vācā) - with speech; with words; मैत्रेयः (maitreyaḥ) - Maitreya; (the sage); भगवान् (bhagavān) - venerable; revered; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; seer;]
(Then, having turned away from the king Duryodhana, who was impatient, the venerable sage Maitreya spoke with gentle words.)
Then, turning away from King Duryodhana, who was impatient, the venerable sage Maitreya addressed him with gentle words. (3-11-18)
दुर्योधन महाबाहो निबोध वदतां वर। वचनं मे महाप्राज्ञ ब्रुवतो यद्धितं तव ॥३-११-१९॥
duryodhana mahābāho nibodha vadatāṃ vara। vacanaṃ me mahāprājña bruvato yaddhitaṃ tava ॥3-11-19॥
[दुर्योधन (duryodhana) - Duryodhana; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; निबोध (nibodha) - listen; वदतां (vadatām) - of speakers; वर (vara) - best; वचनं (vacanam) - word; मे (me) - my; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - O greatly wise; ब्रुवतः (bruvataḥ) - speaking; यत् (yat) - which; हितं (hitaṃ) - beneficial; तव (tava) - for you;]
(Duryodhana, O mighty-armed, listen, O best of speakers; my word, O greatly wise, speaking which is beneficial for you.)
Duryodhana, O mighty-armed, listen, O foremost of speakers; hear my words, O greatly wise one, as I speak what is beneficial for you. (3-11-19)
मा द्रुहः पाण्डवान्राजन्कुरुष्व हितमात्मनः। पाण्डवानां कुरूणां च लोकस्य च नरर्षभ ॥३-११-२०॥
mā druhaḥ pāṇḍavān rājan kuruṣva hitam ātmanaḥ। pāṇḍavānāṃ kurūṇāṃ ca lokasya ca nararṣabha ॥3-11-20॥

ते हि सर्वे नरव्याघ्राः शूरा विक्रान्तयोधिनः। सर्वे नागायुतप्राणा वज्रसंहनना दृढाः ॥३-११-२१॥
te hi sarve naravyāghrāḥ śūrā vikrāntayodhinaḥ। sarve nāgāyutaprāṇā vajrasaṃhananā dṛḍhāḥ ॥3-11-21॥

(They indeed all tiger-men valiant mighty warriors; all having the strength of ten thousand elephants, with bodies as hard as diamond, firm.)
Indeed, all of them are tiger-like men, valiant and mighty warriors; all possess the strength of ten thousand elephants, are firm, and have bodies as hard as diamond. (3-11-21)
सत्यव्रतपराः सर्वे सर्वे पुरुषमानिनः। हन्तारो देवशत्रूणां रक्षसां कामरूपिणाम् ॥ हिडिम्बबकमुख्यानां किर्मीरस्य च रक्षसः ॥३-११-२२॥
satyavrataparāḥ sarve sarve puruṣamāniṇaḥ। hantāro devaśatrūṇāṃ rakṣasāṃ kāmarūpiṇām ॥ hiḍimbabakamukhyānāṃ kirmīrasya ca rakṣasaḥ ॥3-11-22॥

(Devoted to truth and vows, all, all those who consider themselves men, destroyers of the enemies of the gods, of the rākṣasas who can assume any form at will, of the leaders Hiḍimba and Baka, of Kirmīra and of the rākṣasa.)
All of them were devoted to truth and vows, all were men of honor, destroyers of the enemies of the gods, slayers of the rākṣasas who could assume any form at will, including the chief rākṣasas Hiḍimba, Baka, and Kirmīra. (3-11-22)
इतः प्रच्यवतां रात्रौ यः स तेषां महात्मनाम्। आवृत्य मार्गं रौद्रात्मा तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः ॥३-११-२३॥
itaḥ pracyavatāṃ rātrau yaḥ sa teṣāṃ mahātmanām। āvṛtya mārgaṃ raudrātmā tasthau giririvācalaḥ ॥3-11-23॥
[इतः (itaḥ) - from here; प्रच्यवतां (pracyavatām) - of those who have departed; रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; यः (yaḥ) - who; स (sa) - he; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great-souled ones; आवृत्य (āvṛtya) - having blocked; मार्गं (mārgaṃ) - the path; रौद्रात्मा (raudrātmā) - having a fierce nature; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; गिरिरिव (giririva) - like a mountain; अचलः (acalaḥ) - immovable;]
(From here, of those who have departed, at night, who, he, of them, of the great-souled ones, having blocked the path, having a fierce nature, stood, like a mountain, immovable.)
At night, he who had a fierce nature stood blocking the path of those great-souled ones who had departed from here, immovable like a mountain. (3-11-23)
तं भीमः समरश्लाघी बलेन बलिनां वरः। जघान पशुमारेण व्याघ्रः क्षुद्रमृगं यथा ॥३-११-२४॥
taṃ bhīmaḥ samaraślāghī balena balināṃ varaḥ। jaghāna paśumāreṇa vyāghraḥ kṣudramṛgaṃ yathā ॥3-11-24॥

(Him Bhima, proud in battle, by strength, the best of the strong, killed with the animal-slayer, the tiger, the small animal, as.)
Bhima, the best among the strong and proud in battle, killed him with his strength, just as a tiger kills a small animal with its animal-slaying power. (3-11-24)
पश्य दिग्विजये राजन्यथा भीमेन पातितः। जरासन्धो महेष्वासो नागायुतबलो युधि ॥३-११-२५॥
paśya digvijaye rājan yathā bhīmena pātitaḥ। jarāsandho maheṣvāso nāgāyutabalo yudhi ॥3-11-25॥

सम्बन्धी वासुदेवश्च येषां श्यालश्च पार्षतः। कस्तान्युधि समासीत जरामरणवान्नरः ॥३-११-२६॥
sambandhī vāsudevaś ca yeṣāṃ śyālaś ca pārṣataḥ। kas tān yudhi samāsīta jarāmaraṇavān naraḥ॥3-11-26॥
[सम्बन्धी (sambandhī) - relative; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva; च (ca) - and; येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; श्यालः (śyālaḥ) - brother-in-law; च (ca) - and; पार्षतः (pārṣataḥ) - Pārṣata (son of Pṛṣata, i.e., Drupada); कः (kaḥ) - who; तान् (tān) - them; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; समासीत (samāsīta) - could withstand; जरामरणवान् (jarāmaraṇavān) - subject to old age and death; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]

Who, being only a mortal subject to old age and death, could withstand in battle those whose relative was Vāsudeva and whose brother-in-law was Pārṣata? (3-11-26)
तस्य ते शम एवास्तु पाण्डवैर्भरतर्षभ। कुरु मे वचनं राजन्मा मृत्युवशमन्वगाः ॥३-११-२७॥
tasya te śama evāstu pāṇḍavair bharatarṣabha। kuru me vacanaṃ rājan mā mṛtyuvaśam anvagāḥ ॥3-11-27॥

एवं तु ब्रुवतस्तस्य मैत्रेयस्य विशां पते। ऊरुं गजकराकारं करेणाभिजघान सः ॥३-११-२८॥
evaṃ tu bruvatas tasya maitreyasya viśāṃ pate। ūruṃ gajakarākāraṃ kareṇābhijaghāna saḥ ॥3-11-28॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; तु (tu) - but; ब्रुवतः (bruvataḥ) - speaking; तस्य (tasya) - of him; मैत्रेयस्य (maitreyasya) - of Maitreya; विशां (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - lord; ऊरुं (ūruṃ) - thigh; गजकराकारं (gajakarākāram) - having the form of an elephant's trunk; करेण (kareṇa) - with the hand; अभिजघान (abhijaghāna) - struck; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Thus but speaking of him, of Maitreya, lord of men; the thigh having the form of an elephant's trunk, with the hand, he struck.)
But as Maitreya, the lord of men, was thus speaking, he struck his thigh, which was shaped like an elephant's trunk, with his hand. (3-11-28)
दुर्योधनः स्मितं कृत्वा चरणेनालिखन्महीम्। न किञ्चिदुक्त्वा दुर्मेधास्तस्थौ किञ्चिदवाङ्मुखः ॥३-११-२९॥
duryodhanaḥ smitaṃ kṛtvā caraṇenālikhanmahīm। na kiñciduktvā durmedhāstasthau kiñcidavāṅmukhaḥ ॥3-11-29॥
[दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; स्मितं (smitaṃ) - smile; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; चरणेन (caraṇena) - with the foot; अलिखन् (alikhan) - scratching; महीम् (mahīm) - earth; न (na) - not; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; दुर्मेधा (durmedhā) - of evil intellect; अतस्थौ (atasthau) - stood; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - somewhat; अवाङ्मुखः (avāṅmukhaḥ) - with face downcast;]
(Duryodhana, having made a smile, scratching the earth with his foot, not having said anything, the evil-minded stood somewhat with face downcast.)
Duryodhana smiled and, scratching the earth with his foot, said nothing; the evil-minded one stood there, his face somewhat downcast. (3-11-29)
तमशुश्रूषमाणं तु विलिखन्तं वसुन्धराम्। दृष्ट्वा दुर्योधनं राजन्मैत्रेयं कोप आविशत् ॥३-११-३०॥
tamaśuśrūṣamāṇaṃ tu vilikhantaṃ vasundharām। dṛṣṭvā duryodhanaṃ rājanmaitreyaṃ kopa āviśat ॥3-11-30॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अशुश्रूषमाणं (aśuśrūṣamāṇam) - not obeying; तु (tu) - but; विलिखन्तं (vilikhantam) - scratching; वसुन्धराम् (vasundharām) - earth; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; दुर्योधनं (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मैत्रेयं (maitreyaṃ) - Maitreya; कोपः (kopaḥ) - anger; आविशत् (āviśat) - entered;]
(Him not obeying but scratching the earth, having seen Duryodhana, O king, anger entered Maitreya.)
O king, seeing Duryodhana not obeying and scratching the earth, anger entered Maitreya. (3-11-30)
स कोपवशमापन्नो मैत्रेयो मुनिसत्तमः। विधिना सम्प्रयुक्तश्च शापायास्य मनो दधे ॥३-११-३१॥
sa kopavaśamāpanno maitreyo munisattamaḥ। vidhinā samprayuktaśca śāpāyāsya mano dadhe ॥3-11-31॥
[स (sa) - he; कोप (kopa) - anger; वशम् (vaśam) - control; power; आपन्नः (āpannaḥ) - fallen into; attained; मैत्रेयः (maitreyaḥ) - Maitreya; मुनिसत्तमः (munisattamaḥ) - best among sages; विधिना (vidhinā) - by fate; by destiny; सम्प्रयुक्तः (samprayuktaḥ) - impelled; prompted; च (ca) - and; शापाय (śāpāya) - for curse; अस्य (asya) - his; मनो (mano) - mind; दधे (dadhe) - placed; set;]
(He, fallen under the control of anger, Maitreya, best among sages, by fate impelled and for curse his mind placed.)
Maitreya, the best among sages, having fallen under the control of anger, was impelled by fate and set his mind on cursing him. (3-11-31)
ततः स वार्युपस्पृश्य कोपसंरक्तलोचनः। मैत्रेयो धार्तराष्ट्रं तमशपद्दुष्टचेतसम् ॥३-११-३२॥
tataḥ sa vāry-upaspṛśya kopasaṁraktalocanaḥ। maitreyo dhārtarāṣṭraṁ tam aśapad duṣṭacetasaṁ ॥3-11-32॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; स (sa) - he; वारि (vāri) - water; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having touched; कोप (kopa) - anger; संरक्त (saṁrakta) - reddened; लोचनः (locanaḥ) - eyes; मैत्रेयः (maitreyaḥ) - Maitreya; धार्तराष्ट्रम् (dhārtarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra's son; तम् (tam) - him; अशपद् (aśapad) - cursed; दुष्ट (duṣṭa) - wicked; चेतसम् (cetasam) - minded;]
(Then he, having touched water, with eyes reddened by anger, Maitreya cursed that son of Dhritarashtra, of wicked mind.)
Then, Maitreya, his eyes reddened with anger after touching water, cursed that wicked-minded son of Dhritarashtra. (3-11-32)
यस्मात्त्वं मामनादृत्य नेमां वाचं चिकीर्षसि। तस्मादस्याभिमानस्य सद्यः फलमवाप्नुहि ॥३-११-३३॥
yasmāttvaṁ māmanādṛtya nemāṁ vācaṁ cikīrṣasi। tasmādasyābhimānasya sadyaḥ phalamavāpnuhi ॥3-11-33॥
[यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because of which; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; माम् (mām) - me; अनादृत्य (anādṛtya) - disregarding; न (na) - not; इमां (imām) - this; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; चिकीर्षसि (cikīrṣasi) - you wish to do; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अस्य (asya) - of this; अभिमानस्य (abhimānasya) - of pride; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; अवाप्नुहि (avāpnuhi) - obtain;]
(Because of which you, disregarding me, do not wish to do this speech; therefore, of this pride, immediately the fruit obtain.)
Because you, disregarding me, do not wish to carry out this command, therefore, immediately receive the fruit of this pride. (3-11-33)
त्वदभिद्रोहसंयुक्तं युद्धमुत्पत्स्यते महत्। यत्र भीमो गदापातैस्तवोरुं भेत्स्यते बली ॥३-११-३४॥
tvadabhidrohasaṃyuktaṃ yuddhamutpatsyate mahat। yatra bhīmo gadāpātaistavoruṃ bhetsyate balī ॥3-11-34॥
[त्वत् (tvat) - from you; अभिद्रोह (abhidroha) - enmity; संयुक्तं (saṃyuktaṃ) - joined with; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; उत्पत्स्यते (utpatsyate) - will arise; महत् (mahat) - great; यत्र (yatra) - where; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; गदा-पातैः (gadā-pātaiḥ) - by blows of the mace; तव (tava) - your; उरुं (uruṃ) - thigh; भेत्स्यते (bhetsyate) - will break; बली (balī) - the strong one;]
(A great battle joined with enmity from you will arise; where Bhima, the strong one, will break your thigh by blows of the mace.)
A great battle, arising from your enmity, will take place; there, Bhima, the mighty, will shatter your thigh with blows of his mace. (3-11-34)
इत्येवमुक्ते वचने धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः। प्रसादयामास मुनिं नैतदेवं भवेदिति ॥३-११-३५॥
ityevamukte vacane dhṛtarāṣṭro mahīpatiḥ। prasādayāmāsa muniṃ naitad evaṃ bhaved iti ॥3-11-35॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this manner; उक्ते (ukte) - having been said; वचने (vacane) - in the speech; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - king; प्रसादयामास (prasādayāmāsa) - caused to be pleased; मुनिम् (munim) - sage; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; एवम् (evam) - thus; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; इति (iti) - so;]
(Thus, when this speech had been said, Dhritarashtra, the king, caused the sage to be pleased, saying, "Let this not be so.")
When these words had been spoken, King Dhritarashtra sought to appease the sage, saying, "Let this not happen thus." (3-11-35)

[शमम् (śamam) - peace; यास्यति (yāsyati) - will go; चेत् (cet) - if; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; तव (tava) - your; राजन् (rājan) - O king; यथा (yathā) - as; तथा (tathā) - so; शापः (śāpaḥ) - curse; न (na) - not; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; तात (tāta) - dear father; विपरीते (viparīte) - in the opposite case; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will happen;]
(Peace will go if your son, O king, as so. Curse not will be, dear father, in the opposite case will happen.)
O king, if your son attains peace as such, then the curse will not occur, dear father; but if the opposite happens, the curse will take effect. (3-11-36)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

[स (sa) - he; विलक्षः (vilakṣaḥ) - ashamed; तु (tu) - but; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; दुर्योधनपिता (duryodhanapitā) - father of Duryodhana; तदा (tadā) - then; मैत्रेयं (maitreyaṃ) - to Maitreya; प्राह (prāha) - said; किर्मीरः (kirmīraḥ) - Kirmira; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; भीमेन (bhīmena) - by Bhima; पातितः (pātitaḥ) - was slain;]
(He, ashamed, but, O king, father of Duryodhana, then, to Maitreya, said: "Kirmira, how by Bhima was slain?" (3-11-37))
Then, O king, the father of Duryodhana, being ashamed, said to Maitreya: "How was Kirmira slain by Bhima?" (3-11-37)

[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - shall speak; असूया (asūyā) - envy; ते (te) - to you; न (na) - not; ते (te) - to you; शुश्रूषते (śuśrūṣate) - serves; listens; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; एष (eṣa) - this; ते (te) - to you; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आख्यास्यति (ākhyāsyati) - will tell; गते (gate) - having gone; मयि (mayi) - when I;]
(Not I shall speak envy to you; not to you serves son; this to you Vidura all will tell having gone when I.)
I will not speak to you out of envy; your son does not serve you; this Vidura will tell you everything when I am gone. (3-11-38)

(Thus, having spoken in this manner, Maitreya departed as he had come. Disturbed by the killing of Kirmīra, Duryodhana went outside. (3-11-39))
After saying this, Maitreya departed the way he had come. Duryodhana, troubled by the slaying of Kirmīra, went outside. (3-11-39)
