किर्मीरस्य वधं क्षत्तः श्रोतुमिच्छामि कथ्यताम्। रक्षसा भीमसेनस्य कथमासीत्समागमः ॥३-१२-१॥
kirmīrasya vadhaṃ kṣattaḥ śrotumicchāmi kathyatām। rakṣasā bhīmasenasya kathamāsītsamāgamaḥ ॥3-12-1॥

(Of Kirmira slaying, O charioteer, to hear I desire, let it be told. By the rakshasa, of Bhimasena, how was the encounter?)
O charioteer, I wish to hear about the slaying of Kirmira. Please tell me how Bhimasena encountered the rakshasa. (3-12-1)

शृणु भीमस्य कर्मेदमतिमानुषकर्मणः। श्रुतपूर्वं मया तेषां कथान्तेषु पुनः पुनः ॥३-१२-२॥
śṛṇu bhīmasya karmedam atimānuṣakarmaṇaḥ। śrutapūrvaṃ mayā teṣāṃ kathānteṣu punaḥ punaḥ ॥3-12-2॥

इतः प्रयाता राजेन्द्र पाण्डवा द्यूतनिर्जिताः। जग्मुस्त्रिभिरहोरात्रैः काम्यकं नाम तद्वनम् ॥३-१२-३॥

O king, from here the Pāṇḍavas, having been defeated in dice, departed and in three days and nights reached the forest called Kāmyaka. (3-12-3)
रात्रौ निशीथे स्वाभीले गतेऽर्धसमये नृप। प्रचारे पुरुषादानां रक्षसां भीमकर्मणाम् ॥३-१२-४॥
rātrau niśīthe svābhīle gate'rdhasamaye nṛpa। pracāre puruṣādānāṃ rakṣasāṃ bhīmakarmaṇām ॥3-12-4॥
[रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; निशीथे (niśīthe) - at midnight; स्वाभीले (svābhīle) - in own darkness; गते (gate) - having gone; अर्धसमये (ardhasamaye) - at half-time; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; प्रचारे (pracāre) - in the movement; पुरुषादानां (puruṣādānāṃ) - of man-eaters; रक्षसां (rakṣasāṃ) - of rākṣasas; भीमकर्मणाम् (bhīmakarmaṇām) - of terrible deeds;]
(At night, at midnight, in own darkness, having gone, at half-time, O king, in the movement, of man-eaters, of rākṣasas, of terrible deeds.)
O king, at night, when midnight had passed and darkness prevailed, at the half-time, the man-eating rākṣasas of terrible deeds were moving about. (3-12-4)
तद्वनं तापसा नित्यं शेषाश्च वनचारिणः। दूरात्परिहरन्ति स्म पुरुषादभयात्किल ॥३-१२-५॥
tad vanaṃ tāpasā nityaṃ śeṣāś ca vanacāriṇaḥ। dūrāt pariharanti sma puruṣād abhayāt kila ॥3-12-5॥
[तत् (tat) - that; वनम् (vanam) - forest; तापसाः (tāpasāḥ) - ascetics; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; शेषाः (śeṣāḥ) - the others; च (ca) - and; वनचारिणः (vanacāriṇaḥ) - forest-dwellers; दूरात् (dūrāt) - from afar; परिहरन्ति (pariharanti) - avoid; स्म (sma) - indeed; पुरुषात् (puruṣāt) - from the man; अभयात् (abhayāt) - from fearlessness; किल (kila) - it is said;]
(That forest, the ascetics always, and the other forest-dwellers, from afar, indeed avoided from the man, from fearlessness, it is said.)
It is said that the ascetics and other forest-dwellers always avoided that forest from a distance because of the fearlessness of the man. (3-12-5)
तेषां प्रविशतां तत्र मार्गमावृत्य भारत। दीप्ताक्षं भीषणं रक्षः सोल्मुकं प्रत्यदृश्यत ॥३-१२-६॥
teṣāṃ praviśatāṃ tatra mārgam āvṛtya bhārata। dīptākṣaṃ bhīṣaṇaṃ rakṣaḥ soḷmukaṃ pratyadṛśyata ॥3-12-6॥

(Of them entering there, having blocked the path, O Bhārata, with blazing eyes, terrible, a rākṣasa with a club appeared.)
As they were entering there, O Bhārata, a terrible rākṣasa with blazing eyes and a club appeared, blocking the path. (3-12-6)
बाहू महान्तौ कृत्वा तु तथास्यं च भयानकम्। स्थितमावृत्य पन्थानं येन यान्ति कुरूद्वहाः ॥३-१२-७॥
bāhū mahāntau kṛtvā tu tathāsyaṃ ca bhayānakam। sthitam āvṛtya panthānaṃ yena yānti kurūdvahāḥ ॥3-12-7॥
[बाहू (bāhū) - arms; महान्तौ (mahāntau) - great; large; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; having formed; तु (tu) - but; तथास्यं (tathāsyaṃ) - and such a mouth; च (ca) - and; भयानकम् (bhayānakam) - terrible; frightening; स्थितम् (sthitam) - standing; being; आवृत्य (āvṛtya) - having covered; having blocked; पन्थानम् (panthānam) - the path; the way; येन (yena) - by whom; by which; यान्ति (yānti) - go; proceed; कुरूद्वहाः (kurūdvahāḥ) - the foremost of the Kurus; Kurus' heroes;]
(Having made great arms and such a terrible mouth, but standing, having blocked the path by which the foremost of the Kurus go.)
Having formed great arms and a dreadful mouth, he stood blocking the path by which the heroes of the Kurus pass. (3-12-7)
दष्टोष्ठदंष्ट्रं ताम्राक्षं प्रदीप्तोर्ध्वशिरोरुहम्। सार्करश्मितडिच्चक्रं सबलाकमिवाम्बुदम् ॥३-१२-८॥
daṣṭoṣṭhadaṃṣṭraṃ tāmrākṣaṃ pradīptordhvaśiroruham। sārkaraśmitadiccakraṃ sabalākamivāmbudam ॥3-12-8॥
[दष्ट (daṣṭa) - bitten; ओष्ठ (oṣṭha) - lip; दंष्ट्रं (daṃṣṭram) - tusk; ताम्र (tāmra) - coppery; अक्षं (akṣam) - eye; प्रदीप्त (pradīpta) - blazing; ऊर्ध्व (ūrdhva) - upward; शिरो (śira) - head; रुहम् (ruham) - hair; स (sa) - with; अर्क (arka) - sun; रश्मि (raśmi) - ray; तडित् (taḍit) - lightning; चक्रं (cakram) - circle; स (sa) - with; बलाकम् (balākam) - crane; इव (iva) - like; अम्बुदम् (ambudam) - cloud;]
(With bitten lips and tusks, coppery eyes, blazing upward hair on the head, with a circle of sun rays and lightning, with cranes, like a cloud.)
With lips and tusks bitten, coppery eyes, blazing hair standing upward on the head, encircled by rays of the sun and flashes of lightning, and with cranes, he appeared like a cloud. (3-12-8)
सृजन्तं राक्षसीं मायां महारावविराविणम्। मुञ्चन्तं विपुलं नादं सतोयमिव तोयदम् ॥३-१२-९॥
sṛjantaṃ rākṣasīṃ māyāṃ mahārāvavirāviṇam। muñcantaṃ vipulaṃ nādaṃ satoyam iva toyadam ॥3-12-9॥

तस्य नादेन सन्त्रस्ताः पक्षिणः सर्वतोदिशम्। विमुक्तनादाः सम्पेतुः स्थलजा जलजैः सह ॥३-१२-१०॥
tasya nādena santrastāḥ pakṣiṇaḥ sarvatodiśam। vimuktanādāḥ sampetuḥ sthalajā jalajaiḥ saha ॥3-12-10॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; नादेन (nādena) - by the sound; सन्त्रस्ताः (santrastāḥ) - frightened; पक्षिणः (pakṣiṇaḥ) - birds; सर्वतोदिशम् (sarvatodiśam) - in all directions; विमुक्तनादाः (vimuktanādāḥ) - having lost their cries; सम्पेतुः (sampetuḥ) - flew together; स्थलजा (sthalajā) - born on land; जलजैः (jalajaiḥ) - with those born in water; सह (saha) - together with;]

सम्प्रद्रुतमृगद्वीपिमहिषर्क्षसमाकुलम्। तद्वनं तस्य नादेन सम्प्रस्थितमिवाभवत् ॥३-१२-११॥
sampradrutamṛgadvīpimahiṣarkṣasamākulam। tad vanaṃ tasya nādena samprasthitam ivābhavat ॥3-12-11॥
[सम्प्रद्रुत (sampradruta) - completely run; मृग (mṛga) - deer; द्वीपि (dvīpi) - tiger; महिष (mahiṣa) - buffalo; ऋक्ष (rkṣa) - bear; समाकुलम् (samākulam) - filled with; तत् (tat) - that; वनम् (vanam) - forest; तस्य (tasya) - his; नादेन (nādena) - by the sound; सम्प्रस्थितम् (samprasthitam) - set in motion; इव (iva) - as if; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Completely run deer, tigers, buffaloes, bears, filled with; that forest by his sound as if set in motion became.)
That forest, filled with deer, tigers, buffaloes, and bears running in all directions, seemed as if it had been set in motion by his sound. (3-12-11)
तस्योरुवाताभिहता ताम्रपल्लवबाहवः। विदूरजाताश्च लताः समाश्लिष्यन्त पादपान् ॥३-१२-१२॥
tasyoruvātābhihatā tāmrapallavabāhavaḥ। vidūrajātāś ca latāḥ samāśliṣyanta pādapān ॥3-12-12॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; उरु (uru) - strong; वात (vāta) - wind; अभिहता (abhihatā) - struck; ताम्र (tāmra) - coppery; पल्लव (pallava) - leaf; बाहवः (bāhavaḥ) - branches; विदूर (vidūra) - far; जाताः (jātāḥ) - grown; च (ca) - and; लताः (latāḥ) - creepers; सम् (sam) - together; आश्लिष्यन्त (āśliṣyanta) - embracing; पादपान् (pādapān) - trees;]
(Of him strong wind struck coppery-leaf branches; far-grown and creepers together embracing trees.)
The branches with coppery leaves, struck by his strong wind, and the creepers that had grown far, together embraced the trees. (3-12-12)
तस्मिन्क्षणेऽथ प्रववौ मारुतो भृशदारुणः। रजसा संवृतं तेन नष्टर्ष्कमभवन्नभः ॥३-१२-१३॥
tasmin-kṣaṇe-'tha pravavau māruto bhṛśa-dāruṇaḥ। rajasā saṁvṛtaṁ tena naṣṭa-ṛṣkam abhavan nabhaḥ ॥3-12-13॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; क्षणे (kṣaṇe) - moment; अथ (atha) - then; प्रववौ (pravavau) - blew forth; मारुतः (mārutaḥ) - wind; भृश (bhṛśa) - very; दारुणः (dāruṇaḥ) - fierce; रजसा (rajasā) - with dust; संवृतं (saṁvṛtaṁ) - covered; तेन (tena) - by that; नष्ट (naṣṭa) - lost; ऋष्कम् (ṛṣkam) - star; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; नभः (nabhaḥ) - sky;]
(In that moment then blew forth wind very fierce; with dust covered by that lost star became sky;)
At that moment, then, a very fierce wind blew; the sky, covered with dust by it, lost its stars. (3-12-13)
पञ्चानां पाण्डुपुत्राणामविज्ञातो महारिपुः। पञ्चानामिन्द्रियाणां तु शोकवेग इवातुलः ॥३-१२-१४॥
pañcānāṃ pāṇḍuputrāṇām avijñāto mahāripuḥ। pañcānām indriyāṇāṃ tu śokavega iva atulaḥ ॥3-12-14॥

स दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवान्दूरात्कृष्णाजिनसमावृतान्। आवृणोत्तद्वनद्वारं मैनाक इव पर्वतः ॥३-१२-१५॥
sa dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavān dūrāt kṛṣṇājinasamāvṛtān। āvṛṇot tad vanadvāraṃ maināka iva parvataḥ ॥3-12-15॥

(He, having seen the Pāṇḍavas from afar clad in black antelope skin, covered that forest entrance like the mountain Maināka.)
Seeing the Pāṇḍavas from a distance, dressed in black antelope skins, he covered the entrance to the forest like the mountain Maināka. (3-12-15)
तं समासाद्य वित्रस्ता कृष्णा कमललोचना। अदृष्टपूर्वं सन्त्रासान्न्यमीलयत लोचने ॥३-१२-१६॥
taṃ samāsādya vitrastā kṛṣṇā kamalalocanā। adṛṣṭapūrvaṃ santrāsān nyamīlayata locane ॥3-12-16॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; वित्रस्ता (vitrastā) - terrified; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā; कमललोचना (kamalalocanā) - lotus-eyed; अदृष्टपूर्वं (adṛṣṭapūrvam) - never seen before; सन्त्रासात् (santrāsāt) - from fear; न्यमीलयत् (nyamīlayat) - closed; लोचने (locane) - eyes;]

As she approached him, the terrified Kṛṣṇā, whose eyes were like lotuses, closed her eyes out of fear of something she had never seen before. (3-12-16)
दुःशासनकरोत्सृष्टविप्रकीर्णशिरोरुहा। पञ्चपर्वतमध्यस्था नदीवाकुलतां गता ॥३-१२-१७॥
duḥśāsanakaro'tsṛṣṭaviprakīrṇaśiroruhā। pañcaparvatamadhyasthā nadīvākulatāṃ gatā ॥3-12-17॥
[दुःशासन (duḥśāsana) - Duḥśāsana; (name; कर (kara) - hand; उत्सृष्ट (utsṛṣṭa) - cast off; released; विप्रकीर्ण (viprakīrṇa) - scattered; शिरोरुहा (śiroruhā) - hair; (of the head; पञ्च (pañca) - five; पर्वत (parvata) - mountains; मध्यस्था (madhyasthā) - situated in the middle; नदी (nadī) - river; वाकुलताम् (vākulatām) - distress; agitation; गता (gatā) - gone; attained;]
(With hair of the head scattered, cast off by the hand of Duḥśāsana, situated in the midst of five mountains, she attained the distress of a river.)
Her hair, scattered and cast off by Duḥśāsana's hand, she, situated among the five mountains, became agitated like a river in distress. (3-12-17)
मोमुह्यमानां तां तत्र जगृहुः पञ्च पाण्डवाः। इन्द्रियाणि प्रसक्तानि विषयेषु यथा रतिम् ॥३-१२-१८॥
momuhyamānāṃ tāṃ tatra jagṛhuḥ pañca pāṇḍavāḥ। indriyāṇi prasaktāni viṣayeṣu yathā ratim ॥3-12-18॥
[मोमुह्यमानां (momuhyamānām) - being greatly deluded; तां (tām) - her; तत्र (tatra) - there; जगृहुः (jagṛhuḥ) - they seized; पञ्च (pañca) - five; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; इन्द्रियाणि (indriyāṇi) - the senses; प्रसक्तानि (prasaktāni) - attached; विषयेषु (viṣayeṣu) - to objects; यथा (yathā) - just as; रतिम् (ratim) - delight;]

अथ तां राक्षसीं मायामुत्थितां घोरदर्शनाम्। रक्षोघ्नैर्विविधैर्मन्त्रैर्धौम्यः सम्यक्प्रयोजितैः ॥ पश्यतां पाण्डुपुत्राणां नाशयामास वीर्यवान् ॥३-१२-१९॥
atha tāṃ rākṣasīṃ māyām-utthitāṃ ghora-darśanām। rakṣoghnair-vividhair-mantrair-dhaumyaḥ samyak-prayojitaiḥ॥ paśyatāṃ pāṇḍu-putrāṇāṃ nāśayāmāsa vīryavān॥3-12-19॥
[अथ (atha) - then; ताम् (tām) - her; राक्षसीम् (rākṣasīm) - rākṣasī; demoness; मायाम्-उत्थिताम् (māyām-utthitām) - magic-arisen; arisen by illusion; घोर-दर्शनाम् (ghora-darśanām) - terrible-appearance; of fearful aspect; रक्षोघ्नैः (rakṣoghnair) - demon-destroying; destructive to demons; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - various; मन्त्रैः (mantraiḥ) - mantras; sacred chants; धौम्यः (dhaumyaḥ) - Dhaumya; (the sage); सम्यक्-प्रयोजितैः (samyak-prayojitaiḥ) - properly-applied; well-employed; पश्यताम् (paśyatām) - while seeing; in the sight of; पाण्डुपुत्राणाम् (pāṇḍu-putrāṇām) - of the sons of Pandu; नाशयामास (nāśayāmāsa) - destroyed; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; possessing strength;]
(Then her, the demoness arisen by magic, of terrible appearance, with demon-destroying various mantras properly applied, Dhaumya, while the sons of Pandu were seeing, the powerful one destroyed.)
Then Dhaumya, the powerful sage, destroyed that demoness, who had arisen by magic and had a terrible appearance, by properly applying various demon-destroying mantras, in the sight of the sons of Pandu. (3-12-19)
स नष्टमायोऽतिबलः क्रोधविस्फारितेक्षणः। काममूर्तिधरः क्षुद्रः कालकल्पो व्यदृश्यत ॥३-१२-२०॥
sa naṣṭamāyo'tibalaḥ krodhavispāritekṣaṇaḥ। kāmamūrtidharaḥ kṣudraḥ kālakalpo vyadṛśyata ॥3-12-20॥
[स (sa) - he; नष्टमायः (naṣṭamāyaḥ) - whose illusion is destroyed; अतिबलः (atibalaḥ) - very strong; क्रोधविस्फारितेक्षणः (krodhavispāritekṣaṇaḥ) - whose eyes were expanded by anger; काममूर्तिधरः (kāmamūrtidharaḥ) - assuming the form of desire; क्षुद्रः (kṣudraḥ) - mean; कालकल्पः (kālakalpaḥ) - like Yama (death); व्यदृश्यत (vyadṛśyata) - was seen;]
(He, whose illusion is destroyed, very strong, whose eyes were expanded by anger, assuming the form of desire, mean, like Yama, was seen.)
He, whose illusion had vanished, who was exceedingly strong, with eyes widened in anger, assuming the form of desire, mean and like Yama himself, appeared. (3-12-20)
तमुवाच ततो राजा दीर्घप्रज्ञो युधिष्ठिरः। को भवान्कस्य वा किं ते क्रियतां कार्यमुच्यताम् ॥३-१२-२१॥
tamuvāca tato rājā dīrghaprajño yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। ko bhavānkhasya vā kiṃ te kriyatāṃ kāryamucyatām ॥3-12-21॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजा (rājā) - king; दीर्घप्रज्ञः (dīrghaprajñaḥ) - of long wisdom; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; कः (kaḥ) - who; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); कस्य (kasya) - of whom; वा (vā) - or; किम् (kim) - what; ते (te) - to you; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - may be done; कार्यम् (kāryam) - task; उच्यताम् (ucyatām) - let it be told;]
(Him said then king of long wisdom Yudhishthira. Who you (honorific), of whom or what to you may be done, task let it be told. (3-12-21))
Then the wise king Yudhishthira said to him: "Who are you? Whose are you? Or what is it that should be done for you? Let your task be told." (3-12-21)
प्रत्युवाचाथ तद्रक्षो धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम्। अहं बकस्य वै भ्राता किर्मीर इति विश्रुतः ॥३-१२-२२॥
pratyuvācātha tadrakṣo dharmarājaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram। ahaṃ bakasya vai bhrātā kirmīra iti viśrutaḥ ॥3-12-22॥
[प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; spoke in return; अथ (atha) - then; thereafter; तत् (tat) - that; रक्षः (rakṣaḥ) - rākṣasa; demon; धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - Dharmarāja; king of dharma; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira; (accusative singular); अहम् (aham) - I; बकस्य (bakasya) - of Baka; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; किर्मीर (kirmīra) - Kirmīra; (proper name); इति (iti) - thus; so; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - well-known; famous;]
(Then that demon replied to Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira: I am indeed the brother of Baka, Kirmīra by name, thus (I am) well-known.)
Then that demon spoke to Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira: "I am Kirmīra, the brother of Baka, and thus I am well-known." (3-12-22)
वनेऽस्मिन्काम्यके शून्ये निवसामि गतज्वरः। युधि निर्जित्य पुरुषानाहारं नित्यमाचरन् ॥३-१२-२३॥
vane'smin kāmyake śūnye nivasāmi gatajvaraḥ। yudhi nirjitya puruṣān āhāraṃ nityam ācaran ॥3-12-23॥
[वने (vane) - in the forest; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; काम्यके (kāmyake) - Kamyaka (name of the forest); शून्ये (śūnye) - empty; निवसामि (nivasāmi) - I dwell; गतज्वरः (gatajvaraḥ) - one whose fever has departed; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; निर्जित्य (nirjitya) - having conquered; पुरुषान् (puruṣān) - men; आहारं (āhāraṃ) - food; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; आचरन् (ācaran) - practicing;]
(In the forest, in this Kamyaka, empty, I dwell, one whose fever has departed; in battle, having conquered men, food, always practicing.)
I dwell in this empty Kamyaka forest, free from fever; in battle, always obtaining food by conquering men. (3-12-23)
के यूयमिह सम्प्राप्ता भक्ष्यभूता ममान्तिकम्। युधि निर्जित्य वः सर्वान्भक्षयिष्ये गतज्वरः ॥३-१२-२४॥
ke yūyam iha samprāptā bhakṣyabhūtā mamāntikam। yudhi nirjitya vaḥ sarvān bhakṣayiṣye gatajvaraḥ ॥3-12-24॥
[के (ke) - who; यूयम् (yūyam) - you (plural); इह (iha) - here; सम्प्राप्ताः (samprāptāḥ) - arrived; भक्ष्यभूताः (bhakṣyabhūtāḥ) - become food; मम (mama) - my; अन्तिकम् (antikam) - near; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; निर्जित्य (nirjitya) - having conquered; वः (vaḥ) - you (all); सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; भक्षयिष्ये (bhakṣayiṣye) - I will eat; गतज्वरः (gatajvaraḥ) - one whose fever is gone;]
(Who you here arrived become food my near. In battle having conquered you all, I will eat, one whose fever is gone.)
Who are you that have come here, having become my food and come near me? In battle, having conquered all of you, I will eat you, now that my fever is gone. (3-12-24)
युधिष्ठिरस्तु तच्छ्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य दुरात्मनः। आचचक्षे ततः सर्वं गोत्रनामादि भारत ॥३-१२-२५॥
yudhiṣṭhiras tu tac chrutvā vacas tasya durātmanaḥ। ācacakṣe tataḥ sarvaṃ gotranāmādi bhārata ॥3-12-25॥
[युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; तु (tu) - but; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; तस्य (tasya) - of him; दुरात्मनः (durātmanaḥ) - of the evil-minded; आचचक्षे (ācacakṣe) - he declared; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; गोत्रनामादि (gotranāmādi) - lineage-names-etc.; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Yudhishthira but that having heard words of him of the evil-minded, he declared then all lineage-names-etc., O Bhārata.)
But Yudhishthira, having heard those words of the evil-minded one, then declared all the lineage names and so on, O Bhārata. (3-12-25)
पाण्डवो धर्मराजोऽहं यदि ते श्रोत्रमागतः। सहितो भ्रातृभिः सर्वैर्भीमसेनार्जुनादिभिः ॥३-१२-२६॥
pāṇḍavo dharmarājo'haṃ yadi te śrotramāgataḥ। sahito bhrātṛbhiḥ sarvairbhīmasenārjunādibhiḥ ॥3-12-26॥
[पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - descendant of Pāṇḍu; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - king of dharma; अहम् (aham) - I; यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - to you; श्रोत्रम् (śrotram) - ear; आगतः (āgataḥ) - arrived; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - all; भीमसेन (bhīmasena) - Bhīmasena; अर्जुन (arjuna) - Arjuna; आदिभिः (ādibhiḥ) - and others;]
(descendant of Pāṇḍu king of dharma I if to you ear arrived together with brothers all Bhīmasena Arjuna and others)
I am the Pāṇḍava, king of dharma; if this has reached your ear, I am together with all my brothers, including Bhīmasena, Arjuna, and others. (3-12-26)
हृतराज्यो वने वासं वस्तुं कृतमतिस्ततः। वनमभ्यागतो घोरमिदं तव परिग्रहम् ॥३-१२-२७॥
hṛtarājyo vane vāsaṃ vastuṃ kṛtamatis tataḥ। vanam abhyāgato ghoram idaṃ tava parigraham ॥3-12-27॥
[हृतराज्यः (hṛtarājyaḥ) - whose kingdom was taken away; वने (vane) - in the forest; वासम् (vāsaṃ) - dwelling; वस्तुम् (vastum) - to dwell; कृतमतिः (kṛtamatiḥ) - having made up his mind; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वनम् (vanam) - forest; अभ्यागतः (abhyāgataḥ) - has come; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; इदम् (idaṃ) - this; तव (tava) - your; परिग्रहम् (parigraham) - abode;]
(Whose kingdom was taken away, in the forest, dwelling, to dwell, having made up his mind, then, the forest, has come, terrible, this, your, abode.)
Having lost his kingdom, he resolved to dwell in the forest; then he came to this terrible forest, your abode. (3-12-27)
किर्मीरस्त्वब्रवीदेनं दिष्ट्या देवैरिदं मम। उपपादितमद्येह चिरकालान्मनोगतम् ॥३-१२-२८॥
kirmīras tv abravīd enaṃ diṣṭyā devair idaṃ mama। upapāditam adya iha cirakālāt manogatam ॥3-12-28॥
[किर्मीरः (kirmīraḥ) - Kirmira; (name of the rakṣasa); तु (tu) - but; however; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; spoke; एनम् (enam) - him; this one; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; by fate; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; इदं (idaṃ) - this; मम (mama) - to me; my; उपपादितम् (upapāditam) - has been brought about; has been accomplished; अद्य (adya) - today; इह (iha) - here; चिरकालात् (cirakālāt) - after a long time; मनोगतम् (manogatam) - desired in the mind; wished for;]
(But Kirmira said to him: By fortune, by the gods, this has been brought about for me today here, after a long time, what was desired in the mind.)
But Kirmira said to him: "By the favor of the gods, what I have long desired in my mind has today been accomplished here." (3-12-28)
भीमसेनवधार्थं हि नित्यमभ्युद्यतायुधः। चरामि पृथिवीं कृत्स्नां नैनमासादयाम्यहम् ॥३-१२-२९॥
bhīmasenavadhārthaṃ hi nityam abhyudyatāyudhaḥ। carāmi pṛthivīṃ kṛtsnāṃ nainam āsādayāmy aham ॥3-12-29॥
[भीमसेनवधार्थम् (bhīmasenavadhārtham) - for the purpose of killing Bhīmasena; हि (hi) - indeed; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; अभ्युद्यतायुधः (abhyudyatāyudhaḥ) - with weapon always raised; चरामि (carāmi) - I roam; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - the earth; कृत्स्नाम् (kṛtsnām) - entire; न (na) - not; एनम् (enam) - him; आसादयामि (āsādayāmi) - I reach; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(For the purpose of killing Bhīmasena indeed, always with weapon raised, I roam the entire earth; I do not reach him.)
Indeed, always keeping my weapon raised for the purpose of killing Bhīmasena, I wander the whole earth, yet I am unable to find him. (3-12-29)
सोऽयमासादितो दिष्ट्या भ्रातृहा काङ्क्षितश्चिरम्। अनेन हि मम भ्राता बको विनिहतः प्रियः ॥३-१२-३०॥
so'ayam āsādito diṣṭyā bhrātṛ-hā kāṅkṣitaś ciram। anena hi mama bhrātā bako vinihataḥ priyaḥ ॥3-12-30॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; आसादितः (āsāditaḥ) - attained; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; भ्रातृहा (bhrātṛ-hā) - brother-killer; काङ्क्षितः (kāṅkṣitaḥ) - desired; चिरम् (ciram) - for a long time; अनेन (anena) - by this; हि (hi) - indeed; मम (mama) - my; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; बकः (bakaḥ) - Baka; विनिहतः (vinihataḥ) - slain; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear;]
(He this attained by fortune brother-killer desired for a long time; by this indeed my brother Baka slain dear.)
He, this brother-killer whom I have long desired, has fortunately been found; by him indeed my dear brother Baka has been slain. (3-12-30)
वेत्रकीयगृहे राजन्ब्राह्मणच्छद्मरूपिणा। विद्याबलमुपाश्रित्य न ह्यस्त्यस्यौरसं बलम् ॥३-१२-३१॥
vetrakīyagṛhe rājanbrāhmaṇacchadmarūpiṇā। vidyābalamupāśritya na hyastyasyourasaṃ balam ॥3-12-31॥
[वेत्रकीयगृहे (vetrakīyagṛhe) - in the house of Vetrakīya; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ब्राह्मणच्छद्मरूपिणा (brāhmaṇacchadmarūpiṇā) - with the form of a false brāhmaṇa; विद्याबलम् (vidyābalam) - the power of knowledge; उपाश्रित्य (upāśritya) - having resorted to; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्ति (asti) - there is; अस्य (asya) - his; औरसं (aurasaṃ) - bodily; बलम् (balam) - strength;]
(In the house of Vetrakīya, O king, with the form of a false brāhmaṇa, having resorted to the power of knowledge, indeed there is not his bodily strength.)
O king, in the house of Vetrakīya, he, assuming the guise of a brāhmaṇa, relied on the power of knowledge; he does not possess physical strength. (3-12-31)
हिडिम्बश्च सखा मह्यं दयितो वनगोचरः। हतो दुरात्मनानेन स्वसा चास्य हृता पुरा ॥३-१२-३२॥
hiḍimbaś ca sakhā mahyaṃ dayito vanagocaraḥ। hato durātmanānena svasā cāsya hṛtā purā ॥3-12-32॥
[हिडिम्बः (hiḍimbaḥ) - Hiḍimba; (a proper name); च (ca) - and; सखा (sakhā) - friend; मह्यम् (mahyaṃ) - to me; दयितः (dayitaḥ) - dear; वनगोचरः (vanagocaraḥ) - forest-dweller; हतः (hataḥ) - killed; दुरात्मना (durātmanā) - by the evil-minded; अनेन (anena) - by this (one); स्वसा (svasā) - sister; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; हृता (hṛtā) - carried off; पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(Hiḍimba and (the) friend to me dear forest-dweller killed by the evil-minded by this (one); (his) sister and his carried off formerly.)
Hiḍimba, my dear friend who dwelled in the forest, was killed by this evil-minded one; and his sister was carried off by him in the past. (3-12-32)
सोऽयमभ्यागतो मूढो ममेदं गहनं वनम्। प्रचारसमयेऽस्माकमर्धरात्रे समास्थिते ॥३-१२-३३॥
so'ayam abhyāgato mūḍho mamedam gahanaṃ vanam। pracārasamaye'smākam ardharātre samāsthite ॥3-12-33॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; अभ्यागतः (abhyāgataḥ) - arrived (having come near); मूढः (mūḍhaḥ) - deluded; मम (mama) - my; इदम् (idam) - this; गहनम् (gahanam) - dense; वनम् (vanam) - forest; प्रचारसमये (pracārasamaye) - at the time of patrol; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; अर्धरात्रे (ardharātre) - at midnight; समास्थिते (samāsthite) - when (we were) stationed;]
(He, this deluded one, has arrived at my this dense forest, at the time of our patrol, when (we were) stationed at midnight.)
This fool has come to my dense forest, just as we were stationed for our patrol at midnight. (3-12-33)
अद्यास्य यातयिष्यामि तद्वैरं चिरसम्भृतम्। तर्पयिष्यामि च बकं रुधिरेणास्य भूरिणा ॥३-१२-३४॥
adyāsya yātayiṣyāmi tad-vairaṃ cira-sambhṛtam। tarpayiṣyāmi ca bakaṃ rudhireṇāsya bhūriṇā ॥3-12-34॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; अस्य (asya) - of him; यातयिष्यामि (yātayiṣyāmi) - I will torment; तत् (tat) - that; वैरं (vairaṃ) - enmity; चिरसम्भृतम् (cira-sambhṛtam) - long-cherished; तर्पयिष्यामि (tarpayiṣyāmi) - I will satisfy; च (ca) - and; बकं (bakaṃ) - Baka (the demon); रुधिरेण (rudhireṇa) - with blood; अस्य (asya) - of him; भूरिणा (bhūriṇā) - abundant;]
(Today I will torment him, that long-cherished enmity; and I will satisfy Baka with his abundant blood.)
Today I will torment him and settle that long-standing enmity; I will also satisfy Baka with his copious blood. (3-12-34)
अद्याहमनृणो भूत्वा भ्रातुः सख्युस्तथैव च। शान्तिं लब्धास्मि परमां हत्व राक्षसकण्टकम् ॥३-१२-३५॥
adyāham anṛṇo bhūtvā bhrātuḥ sakhyus tathaiva ca। śāntiṃ labdhāsmi paramāṃ hatvā rākṣasa-kaṇṭakam ॥3-12-35॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; अहम् (aham) - I; अनृणः (anṛṇaḥ) - free from debt; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - of (my) brother; सख्युः (sakhyuḥ) - of (my) friend; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; शान्तिम् (śāntim) - peace; लब्धा (labdhā) - having obtained; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; परमाम् (paramām) - supreme; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; राक्षसकण्टकम् (rākṣasa-kaṇṭakam) - the thorn of the Rākṣasas;]
(Today I, having become free from debt of my brother and friend likewise, and having obtained supreme peace, having slain the thorn of the Rākṣasas.)
Today, having fulfilled my obligations to my brother and friend alike, and having slain the scourge of the Rākṣasas, I have attained supreme peace. (3-12-35)
यदि तेन पुरा मुक्तो भीमसेनो बकेन वै। अद्यैनं भक्षयिष्यामि पश्यतस्ते युधिष्ठिर ॥३-१२-३६॥
yadi tena purā mukto bhīmaseno bakena vai। adya enaṃ bhakṣayiṣyāmi paśyataḥ te yudhiṣṭhira ॥3-12-36॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; तेन (tena) - by him; पुरा (purā) - formerly; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - released; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; बकेन (bakena) - by Baka; वै (vai) - indeed; अद्य (adya) - today; एनम् (enam) - him; भक्षयिष्यामि (bhakṣayiṣyāmi) - I will eat; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - while you are seeing; ते (te) - your; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(If by him formerly released Bhīmasena by Baka indeed, today him I will eat while you are seeing, your Yudhiṣṭhira.)
If Bhīmasena was formerly released by Baka, then today I will eat him before your eyes, Yudhiṣṭhira. (3-12-36)
एनं हि विपुलप्राणमद्य हत्वा वृकोदरम्। सम्भक्ष्य जरयिष्यामि यथागस्त्यो महासुरम् ॥३-१२-३७॥
enaṃ hi vipulaprāṇam adya hatvā vṛkodaram। sambhakṣya jarayiṣyāmi yathāgastyo mahāsuram ॥3-12-37॥
[एनम् (enam) - this (one); हि (hi) - indeed; विपुलप्राणम् (vipulaprāṇam) - having great life-force; अद्य (adya) - today; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; वृकोदरम् (vṛkodaram) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma, 'wolf-bellied'); सम्भक्ष्य (sambhakṣya) - having devoured; जरयिष्यामि (jarayiṣyāmi) - I will digest; यथा (yathā) - just as; अगस्त्यः (agastyaḥ) - Agastya (sage); महासुरम् (mahāsuram) - the great asura (demon);]
(This (one) indeed, having great life-force, today having killed Vṛkodara, having devoured, I will digest, just as Agastya (digested) the great asura.)
Today, after killing this Vṛkodara of great life-force, I will devour and digest him, just as Agastya digested the great asura. (3-12-37)
एवमुक्तस्तु धर्मात्मा सत्यसन्धो युधिष्ठिरः। नैतदस्तीति सक्रोधो भर्त्सयामास राक्षसम् ॥३-१२-३८॥
evam uktas tu dharmātmā satyasaṃdho yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। naitad astīti sakrodho bhartsayāmāsa rākṣasam ॥3-12-38॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; तु (tu) - but; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; सत्यसन्धः (satyasaṃdhaḥ) - truthful; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; अस्ति (asti) - is; इति (iti) - thus; सक्रोधः (sakrodhaḥ) - with anger; भर्त्सयामास (bhartsayāmāsa) - reproached; राक्षसम् (rākṣasam) - the demon;]
(Thus spoken but the righteous-souled, truthful Yudhishthira, not this is thus, with anger reproached the demon.)
When thus addressed, the righteous and truthful Yudhishthira, with anger, rebuked the demon, saying, "This is not so." (3-12-38)
ततो भीमो महाबाहुरारुज्य तरसा द्रुम। दशव्याममिवोद्विद्धं निष्पत्रमकरोत्तदा ॥३-१२-३९॥
tato bhīmo mahābāhur ārujya tarasā druma। daśavyāmam ivodviddhaṃ niṣpatram akarot tadā ॥3-12-39॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; आरुज्य (ārujya) - having uprooted; तरसा (tarasā) - with force; द्रुमम् (drumam) - tree; दशव्यामम् (daśavyāmam) - ten vyamas long; इव (iva) - as if; उद्विद्धम् (udviddham) - uprooted; निष्पत्रम् (niṣpatram) - leafless; अकरोत् (akarot) - made; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then Bhima, mighty-armed, having uprooted with force a tree, ten vyamas long, as if uprooted, made it leafless then.)
Then Bhima, the mighty-armed, forcefully uprooted a tree ten vyamas long and stripped it of its leaves at that time. (3-12-39)
चकार सज्यं गाण्डीवं वज्रनिष्पेषगौरवम्। निमेषान्तरमात्रेण तथैव विजयोऽर्जुनः ॥३-१२-४०॥
cakāra sajyaṃ gāṇḍīvaṃ vajraniṣpeṣagauravam। nimeṣāntaramātreṇa tathaiva vijayo'rjunaḥ ॥3-12-40॥
[चकार (cakāra) - he did; he made; सज्यं (sajyaṃ) - ready; strung; गाण्डीवं (gāṇḍīvaṃ) - Gandiva (the bow); वज्रनिष्पेषगौरवम् (vajraniṣpeṣagauravam) - having the weight of the crushing of a thunderbolt; निमेषान्तरमात्रेण (nimeṣāntaramātreṇa) - within the measure of the interval of a blink; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; likewise; विजयः (vijayaḥ) - Vijaya (the bow); अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna;]
(He made ready the Gandiva, having the weight of the crushing of a thunderbolt; within the measure of the interval of a blink, likewise, Arjuna (made ready) Vijaya.)
He strung the Gandiva bow, which had the weight of a thunderbolt's impact; and in the blink of an eye, Arjuna likewise readied the Vijaya bow. (3-12-40)
निवार्य भीमो जिष्णुं तु तद्रक्षो घोरदर्शनम्। अभिद्रुत्याब्रवीद्वाक्यं तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति भारत ॥३-१२-४१॥
nivārya bhīmo jiṣṇuṃ tu tadrakṣo ghoradarśanam। abhidrutya abravīd vākyam tiṣṭha tiṣṭha iti bhārata ॥3-12-41॥

(Not-agitated but that rākṣasa in battle was seen; hurled and a blazing firebrand, a burning thunderbolt like;)
But that rākṣasa, unagitated, was seen in battle; he hurled a blazing firebrand, like a burning thunderbolt. (3-12-44)
तदुदस्तमलातं तु भीमः प्रहरतां वरः। पदा सव्येन चिक्षेप तद्रक्षः पुनराव्रजत् ॥३-१२-४५॥
tadudastamalātaṃ tu bhīmaḥ praharatāṃ varaḥ। padā savyena cikṣepa tadrakṣaḥ punarāvrajat ॥3-12-45॥

किर्मीरश्चापि सहसा वृक्षमुत्पाट्य पाण्डवम्। दण्डपाणिरिव क्रुद्धः समरे प्रत्ययुध्यत ॥३-१२-४६॥

शीर्षयोः पतिता वृक्षा बिभिदुर्नैकधा तयोः। यथैवोत्पलपद्मानि मत्तयोर्द्विपयोस्तथा ॥३-१२-४८॥
śīrṣayoḥ patitā vṛkṣā bibhidurnaikadhā tayoḥ। yathaivotpalapadmāni mattayordvipayostathā ॥3-12-48॥

(From the heads, fallen trees they broke into many pieces of those two. Just as indeed lotuses and water-lilies of the intoxicated two elephants so.)

मुञ्जवज्जर्जरीभूता बहवस्तत्र पादपाः। चीराणीव व्युदस्तानि रेजुस्तत्र महावने ॥३-१२-४९॥
muñjavajjarjarībhūtā bahavastatra pādapāḥ। cīrāṇīva vyudastāni rejustatra mahāvane ॥3-12-49॥

tad-vṛkṣa-yuddham abhavat sumuhūrtam viśāṃ pate। rākṣasānāṃ ca mukhyasya narāṇām uttamasya ca ॥3-12-50॥

ततः शिलां समुत्क्षिप्य भीमस्य युधि तिष्ठतः। प्राहिणोद्राक्षसः क्रुद्धो भीमसेनश्चचाल ह ॥३-१२-५१॥
tataḥ śilāṃ samutkṣipya bhīmasya yudhi tiṣṭhataḥ। prāhiṇod rākṣasaḥ kruddho bhīmasenaś cacāla ha ॥3-12-51॥

(Then, having lifted up a stone, at Bhīma standing in battle, the angry Rākṣasa sent (it); Bhīmasena indeed shook.)

तं शिलाताडनजडं पर्यधावत्स राक्षसः। बाहुविक्षिप्तकिरणः स्वर्भानुरिव भास्करम् ॥३-१२-५२॥
taṃ śilātāḍanajaḍaṃ paryadhāvatsa rākṣasaḥ। bāhuvikṣiptakiraṇaḥ svarbhānuriva bhāskaram ॥3-12-52॥

(Him stupefied by the blow of a stone, the demon ran around, with rays scattered by the arm, like Svarbhanu (eclipsing) the sun.)
The demon, with his arm scattering rays, ran around the one stupefied by the blow of a stone, just as Svarbhanu (the eclipse demon) circles the sun. (3-12-52)
तावन्योन्यं समाश्लिष्य प्रकर्षन्तौ परस्परम्। उभावपि चकाशेते प्रयुद्धौ वृषभाविव ॥३-१२-५३॥
tāv anyonyaṃ samāśliṣya prakarṣantau parasparam। ubhāv api cakāśete prayuddhau vṛṣabhāv iva ॥3-12-53॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; अन्योन्यं (anyonyaṃ) - each other; समाश्लिष्य (samāśliṣya) - having embraced; प्रकर्षन्तौ (prakarṣantau) - dragging; परस्परम् (parasparam) - mutually; उभौ (ubhau) - both; अपि (api) - also; चकाशेते (cakāśete) - shone; प्रयुद्धौ (prayuddhau) - engaged in battle; वृषभाविव (vṛṣabhāv iva) - like bulls;]

tayor āsīt sutumulaḥ samprāharaḥ sudāruṇaḥ। nakhadaṃṣṭrāyudhavator vyāghrayor iva dṛptayoḥ ॥3-12-54॥

(From Duryodhana's insult and from the strength of his arm and being made proud, and having seen Kṛṣṇa's approach, Vṛkodara grew.)
Vṛkodara (Bhīma), made proud by Duryodhana's insult and his own strength, and upon seeing Kṛṣṇa's arrival, grew in spirit. (3-12-55)
अभिपत्याथ बाहुभ्यां प्रत्यगृह्णादमर्षितः। मातङ्ग इव मातङ्गं प्रभिन्नकरटामुखः ॥३-१२-५६॥
abhipatyātha bāhubhyāṃ pratyagṛhṇādamarṣitaḥ। mātaṅga iva mātaṅgaṃ prabhinnakaraṭāmukhaḥ ॥3-12-56॥

तं चाप्याथ ततो रक्षः प्रतिजग्राह वीर्यवान्। तमाक्षिपद्भीमसेनो बलेन बलिनां वरः ॥३-१२-५७॥
taṃ cāpyātha tato rakṣaḥ pratijagrāha vīryavān। tam ākṣipad bhīmaseno balena balināṃ varaḥ ॥3-12-57॥

तयोर्भुजविनिष्पेषादुभयोर्बलिनोस्तदा। शब्दः समभवद्घोरो वेणुस्फोटसमो युधि ॥३-१२-५८॥
tayorbhujaviniṣpeṣādubhayorbalinostadā। śabdaḥ samabhavadghoro veṇusphoṭasamo yudhi ॥3-12-58॥

(From the crushing together of the arms of those two strong ones then, a terrible sound arose, equal to the crack of bamboo, in battle.)

अथैनमाक्षिप्य बलाद्गृह्य मध्ये वृकोदरः। धूनयामास वेगेन वायुश्चण्ड इव द्रुमम् ॥३-१२-५९॥

(Then him having seized, by force having grasped in the midst, Vṛkodara shook with speed, the wind fierce like a tree.)
Then Vṛkodara (Bhīma), having seized him by force and grasped him in the midst, shook him rapidly like the fierce wind shakes a tree. (3-12-59)
स भीमेन परामृष्टो दुर्बलो बलिना रणे। व्यस्पन्दत यथाप्राणं विचकर्ष च पाण्डवम् ॥३-१२-६०॥
sa bhīmena parāmṛṣṭo durbalo balinā raṇe। vyaspandata yathāprāṇaṃ vicakarṣa ca pāṇḍavam ॥3-12-60॥

(He, seized by Bhīma, weak, by the strong, in battle, struggled as much as life (remained), and dragged the Pāṇḍava.)

(Then, having perceived him completely fatigued, Vṛkodara yoked (bound) with (his) arms the animal with a rope as (one does);)
Then, seeing him completely exhausted, Vṛkodara (Bhīma) bound him with his arms, just as one would tie an animal with a rope. (3-12-61)
विनदन्तं महानादं भिन्नभेरीसमस्वनम्। भ्रामयामास सुचिरं विस्फुरन्तमचेतसम् ॥३-१२-६२॥
vinadantaṃ mahānādaṃ bhinnabherīsamasvanam। bhrāmayāmāsa suciraṃ visphurantamacetasam ॥3-12-62॥

(uttering a great sound like the sound of broken kettledrums, he caused the unconscious, quivering (body) to whirl for a long time)
Uttering a great sound like the noise of broken kettledrums, he whirled the unconscious, quivering body for a long time. (3-12-62)
तं विषीदन्तमाज्ञाय राक्षसं पाण्डुनन्दनः। प्रगृह्य तरसा दोर्भ्यां पशुमारममारयत् ॥३-१२-६३॥
taṃ viṣīdantam ājñāya rākṣasaṃ pāṇḍunandanaḥ। pragṛhya tarasā dorbhyāṃ paśumāram amārayat ॥3-12-63॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; विषीदन्तम् (viṣīdantam) - despairing; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having understood; राक्षसं (rākṣasaṃ) - the demon; पाण्डुनन्दनः (pāṇḍunandanaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu; प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having seized; तरसा (tarasā) - with force; दोर् (dor) - arm; भ्याम् (bhyām) - by both; पशुमारम् (paśumāram) - the animal-slayer (sword); अमारयत् (amārayat) - killed;]
(Him despairing having understood the demon the son of Pāṇḍu having seized with force by both arms the animal-slayer killed.)
Having understood that the demon was despairing, the son of Pāṇḍu seized the animal-slaying sword with both arms and killed him. (3-12-63)
आक्रम्य स कटीदेशे जानुना राक्षसाधमम्। अपीडयत बाहुभ्यां कण्ठं तस्य वृकोदरः ॥३-१२-६४॥
ākramya sa kaṭīdeśe jānunā rākṣasādhamam। apīḍayata bāhubhyāṃ kaṇṭhaṃ tasya vṛkodaraḥ ॥3-12-64॥
[आक्रम्य (ākramya) - having approached; having attacked; स (sa) - he; कटीदेशे (kaṭīdeśe) - in the region of the waist; जानुना (jānunā) - with the knee; राक्षसाधमम् (rākṣasādhamam) - the vilest of the rākṣasas; अपीडयत (apīḍayata) - pressed down; crushed; बाहुभ्यां (bāhubhyām) - with (his) arms; कण्ठं (kaṇṭham) - the neck; तस्य (tasya) - his; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma);]
(Having attacked, he in the region of the waist with the knee the vilest of the rākṣasas, pressed down with (his) arms the neck his Vṛkodara.)
Having attacked the vilest of the rākṣasas at the waist with his knee, Vṛkodara (Bhīma) pressed down his neck with his arms. (3-12-64)
अथ तं जडसर्वाङ्गं व्यावृत्तनयनोल्बणम्। भूतले पातयामास वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ह ॥३-१२-६५॥
atha taṃ jaḍasarvāṅgaṃ vyāvṛttanayanolbaṇam। bhūtale pātayāmāsa vākyaṃ cedamuvāca ha ॥3-12-65॥
[अथ (atha) - then; तं (taṃ) - him; जडसर्वाङ्गं (jaḍasarvāṅgam) - with all limbs insensible; व्यावृत्तनयनोल्बणम् (vyāvṛttanayanolbaṇam) - with eyes turned away and fierce; भूतले (bhūtale) - on the ground; पातयामास (pātayāmāsa) - caused to fall; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - speech; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Then him with all limbs insensible, with eyes turned away and fierce, on the ground caused to fall; speech and this indeed said.)
Then, having made him with all his limbs insensible and his eyes turned away and fierce, fall to the ground, he indeed spoke this speech. (3-12-65)
हिडिम्बबकयोः पाप न त्वमश्रुप्रमार्जनम्। करिष्यसि गतश्चासि यमस्य सदनं प्रति ॥३-१२-६६॥
hiḍimbabakayoḥ pāpa na tvam aśru-pramārjanam। kariṣyasi gataś cāsi yamasya sadanaṃ prati ॥3-12-66॥
[हिडिम्बबकयोः (hiḍimbabakayoḥ) - of Hiḍimbā and Baka; पाप (pāpa) - sin; न (na) - not; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अश्रुप्रमार्जनम् (aśru-pramārjanam) - wiping of tears; करिष्यसि (kariṣyasi) - will do; गतः (gataḥ) - gone; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - are; यमस्य (yamasya) - of Yama; सदनं (sadanaṃ) - abode; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Of Hiḍimbā and Baka, sin, not, you, wiping of tears; will do; gone and are; of Yama, abode, towards.)
You will not wipe the tears for the sins of Hiḍimbā and Baka; you have gone towards the abode of Yama. (3-12-66)
इत्येवमुक्त्वा पुरुषप्रवीर; स्तं राक्षसं क्रोधविवृत्तनेत्रः। प्रस्रस्तवस्त्राभरणं स्फुरन्त; मुद्भ्रान्तचित्तं व्यसुमुत्ससर्ज ॥३-१२-६७॥
ityevam uktvā puruṣa-pravīraḥ taṃ rākṣasaṃ krodha-vivṛtta-netraḥ prasrasta-vastra-ābharaṇaṃ sphurantaṃ ud-bhrānta-cittam vyasum utsasarja ॥3-12-67॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this manner; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; पुरुषप्रवीरः (puruṣa-pravīraḥ) - the foremost among men; स्तं (taṃ) - him; राक्षसं (rākṣasaṃ) - the demon; क्रोधविवृत्तनेत्रः (krodha-vivṛtta-netraḥ) - with eyes widened in anger; प्रस्रस्तवस्त्राभरणं (prasrasta-vastra-ābharaṇam) - with garments and ornaments loosened; स्फुरन्तम् (sphurantam) - trembling; उद्भ्रान्तचित्तम् (ud-bhrānta-cittam) - with mind agitated; विसुम् (vyasum) - lifeless; उत्ससर्ज (utsasarja) - he released;]
(Thus having spoken, the foremost among men, with eyes widened in anger, released the lifeless demon, him with garments and ornaments loosened, trembling, with mind agitated.)
Having thus spoken, the foremost of men, his eyes wide with anger, released the lifeless demon, whose garments and ornaments were loosened, who was trembling and whose mind was agitated. (3-12-67)
तस्मिन्हते तोयदतुल्यरूपे; कृष्णां पुरस्कृत्य नरेन्द्रपुत्राः। भीमं प्रशस्याथ गुणैरनेकै; र्हृष्टास्ततो द्वैतवनाय जग्मुः ॥३-१२-६८॥
tasmin hate toyadatulyarūpe; kṛṣṇāṃ puraskṛtya narendraputrāḥ। bhīmaṃ praśasyātha guṇairanekai; hṛṣṭāstato dvaitavanāya jagmuḥ ॥3-12-68॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; हते (hate) - having been slain; तोयदतुल्यरूपे (toyadatulyarūpe) - having form equal to a cloud; कृष्णां (kṛṣṇāṃ) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - placing in front; नरेन्द्रपुत्राः (narendraputrāḥ) - sons of the king; भीमं (bhīmam) - Bhīma; प्रशस्य (praśasya) - having praised; अथ (atha) - then; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - with virtues; अनेकैः (anekaiḥ) - many; हृष्टाः (hṛṣṭāḥ) - joyful; ततः (tataḥ) - then; द्वैतवनाय (dvaitavanāya) - to Dvaitavana; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they went;]
(In that (person) having been slain, having form equal to a cloud; having placed Kṛṣṇā in front, the sons of the king, having praised Bhīma then with many virtues, joyful, then, to Dvaitavana, they went.)
When he of cloud-like form was slain, the sons of the king, placing Kṛṣṇā in front, praised Bhīma for his many virtues, and then, joyful, they went to Dvaitavana. (3-12-68)
एवं विनिहतः सङ्ख्ये किर्मीरो मनुजाधिप। भीमेन वचनात्तस्य धर्मराजस्य कौरव ॥३-१२-६९॥
evaṃ vinihataḥ saṅkhye kirmīro manujādhipa। bhīmena vacanāttasya dharmarājasya kaurava ॥3-12-69॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; विनिहतः (vinihataḥ) - slain; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; किर्मीरः (kirmīraḥ) - Kirmira; मनुजाधिप (manujādhipa) - O king of men; भीमेन (bhīmena) - by Bhima; वचनात् (vacanāt) - by the command; तस्य (tasya) - of him; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmaraja; कौरव (kaurava) - O Kaurava;]
(Thus, Kirmira was slain in battle, O king of men, by Bhima, by the command of him, of Dharmaraja, O Kaurava.)
Thus, O Kaurava, Kirmira was slain in battle by Bhima at the command of Dharmaraja, O king of men. (3-12-69)
ततो निष्कण्टकं कृत्वा वनं तदपराजितः। द्रौपद्या सह धर्मज्ञो वसतिं तामुवास ह ॥३-१२-७०॥
tato niṣkaṇṭakaṃ kṛtvā vanaṃ tadaparājitaḥ। draupadyā saha dharmajño vasatiṃ tāmuvāsa ha ॥3-12-70॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; निष्कण्टकम् (niṣkaṇṭakam) - thornless; free from thorns; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; after making; वनम् (vanam) - forest; तत् (tat) - that; अपराजितः (aparājitaḥ) - unconquered; undefeated; द्रौपद्या (draupadyā) - with Draupadī; सह (saha) - together with; along with; धर्मज्ञः (dharmajñaḥ) - knower of dharma; righteous; वसतिम् (vasatim) - dwelling; residence; ताम् (tām) - that; उवास (uvāsa) - dwelt; lived; ह (ha) - indeed; surely;]
(Then, having made that forest thornless, the unconquered one, together with Draupadī, the knower of dharma, indeed dwelt in that residence.)
Then, having cleared the forest of thorns, the undefeated one, together with Draupadī, who knew dharma, lived in that dwelling. (3-12-70)
समाश्वास्य च ते सर्वे द्रौपदीं भरतर्षभाः। प्रहृष्टमनसः प्रीत्या प्रशशंसुर्वृकोदरम् ॥३-१२-७१॥
samāśvāsya ca te sarve draupadīṃ bharatarṣabhāḥ। prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ prītyā praśaśaṃsur vṛkodaram ॥3-12-71॥
[समाश्वास्य (samāśvāsya) - having consoled; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; द्रौपदीं (draupadīṃ) - Draupadī; भरतर्षभाः (bharatarṣabhāḥ) - bulls among the Bharatas; प्रहृष्टमनसः (prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ) - with delighted minds; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - with affection; प्रशशंसुः (praśaśaṃsuḥ) - praised; वृकोदरम् (vṛkodaram) - Vṛkodara;]
(Having consoled and they all Draupadī, bulls among the Bharatas, with delighted minds, with affection, praised Vṛkodara.)
After consoling Draupadī, all the Bharata chiefs, their minds delighted and with affection, praised Vṛkodara. (3-12-71)
भीमबाहुबलोत्पिष्टे विनष्टे राक्षसे ततः। विविशुस्तद्वनं वीराः क्षेमं निहतकण्टकम् ॥३-१२-७२॥
bhīma-bāhu-bala-utpiṣṭe vinaṣṭe rākṣase tataḥ। viviśus tad vanaṃ vīrāḥ kṣemaṃ nihatakaṇṭakam ॥3-12-72॥
[भीम (bhīma) - terrible; fearful; बाहु (bāhu) - arm; बल (bala) - strength; उत्पिष्टे (utpiṣṭe) - crushed by; विनष्टे (vinaṣṭe) - destroyed; राक्षसे (rākṣase) - rākṣasa; demon; ततः (tataḥ) - then; from there; विविशुस् (viviśus) - entered; तद् (tad) - that; वनं (vanaṃ) - forest; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; warriors; क्षेमं (kṣemaṃ) - safe; secure; निहत (nihata) - slain; killed; कण्टकम् (kaṇṭakam) - thorn; obstacle;]
(When the rākṣasa, destroyed and crushed by the terrible strength of the arm, was slain, then the heroes entered that forest, safe, with the obstacle removed.)
After the rākṣasa was destroyed, crushed by Bhima's mighty arms, the heroes entered that forest, now safe and free from danger. (3-12-72)
स मया गच्छता मार्गे विनिकीर्णो भयावहः। वने महति दुष्टात्मा दृष्टो भीमबलाद्धतः ॥३-१२-७३॥
sa mayā gacchatā mārge vinikīrṇo bhayāvahaḥ। vane mahati duṣṭātmā dṛṣṭo bhīmabalāddhataḥ ॥3-12-73॥
[स (sa) - he; मया (mayā) - by me; गच्छता (gacchatā) - while going; मार्गे (mārge) - on the path; विनिकीर्णः (vinikīrṇaḥ) - scattered; भयावहः (bhayāvahaḥ) - fear-causing; वने (vane) - in the forest; महति (mahati) - great; दुष्टात्मा (duṣṭātmā) - wicked-souled; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - was seen; भीमबलाद्धतः (bhīmabalāddhataḥ) - arrogant from terrible strength;]
(He by me while going on the path, scattered, fear-causing, in the forest, great, wicked-souled, was seen, arrogant from terrible strength.)
While I was going on the path, I saw in the great forest a wicked-souled being, scattered and fearsome, arrogant due to his terrible strength. (3-12-73)
तत्राश्रौषमहं चैतत्कर्म भीमस्य भारत। ब्राह्मणानां कथयतां ये तत्रासन्समागताः ॥३-१२-७४॥
tatrāśrauṣam ahaṃ caitat karma bhīmasya bhārata। brāhmaṇānāṃ kathayatāṃ ye tatrāsan samāgatāḥ ॥3-12-74॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अश्रौषम् (aśrauṣam) - I heard; अहम् (aham) - I; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; कर्म (karma) - act; भीमस्य (bhīmasya) - of Bhīma; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; कथयताम् (kathayatām) - speaking; ये (ye) - who; तत्र (tatra) - there; आसन् (āsan) - were; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - assembled;]
(There I heard, I, and this act of Bhīma, O Bhārata, of the Brāhmaṇas speaking, who there were assembled.)
O Bhārata, there I heard this act of Bhīma from the Brāhmaṇas who were assembled there and narrating it. (3-12-74)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; (name of the sage); उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

Vaiśampāyana said.
एवं विनिहतं सङ्ख्ये किर्मीरं राक्षसोत्तमम्। श्रुत्वा ध्यानपरो राजा निशश्वासार्तवत्तदा ॥३-१२-७५॥
evaṃ vinihataṃ saṅkhye kirmīraṃ rākṣasottamam। śrutvā dhyānaparo rājā niśaśvāsārtavat tadā ॥3-12-75॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; विनिहतम् (vinihatam) - slain; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; किर्मीरम् (kirmīram) - Kirmira; राक्षसोत्तमम् (rākṣasottamam) - the foremost of rākṣasas; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; ध्यानपरः (dhyānaparaḥ) - absorbed in meditation; राजा (rājā) - the king; निशश्वास (niśaśvāsa) - sighed; आर्तवत् (ārtavat) - like one afflicted; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus, having heard that Kirmira, the foremost of rākṣasas, was slain in battle, the king, absorbed in meditation, then sighed like one afflicted.)
Thus, when the king, absorbed in meditation, heard that Kirmira, the foremost of the rākṣasas, had been slain in battle, he sighed deeply like one in distress. (3-12-75)
