भोजाः प्रव्रजिताञ्श्रुत्वा वृष्णयश्चान्धकैः सह। पाण्डवान्दुःखसन्तप्तान्समाजग्मुर्महावने ॥३-१३-१॥
bhojāḥ pravrajitāñśrutvā vṛṣṇayaścāndhakaiḥ saha। pāṇḍavānduḥkhasantaptānsamājagmurmahāvane ॥3-13-1॥
[भोजाः (bhojāḥ) - the Bhojas; प्रव्रजितान् (pravrajitān) - departed; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वृष्णयः (vṛṣṇayaḥ) - the Vṛṣṇis; च (ca) - and; आन्धकैः (āndhakaiḥ) - with the Andhakas; सह (saha) - together with; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; दुःखसन्तप्तान् (duḥkhasantaptān) - afflicted by sorrow; सम् (sam) - together; आजग्मुः (ājagmuḥ) - came; महावने (mahāvane) - to the great forest;]
(The Bhojas, having heard of the departed, and the Vṛṣṇis together with the Andhakas, came to the Pāṇḍavas afflicted by sorrow, to the great forest.)
When the Bhojas heard of the exile, the Vṛṣṇis along with the Andhakas came together to the sorrow-stricken Pāṇḍavas in the great forest. (3-13-1)
पाञ्चालस्य च दायादा धृष्टकेतुश्च चेदिपः। केकयाश्च महावीर्या भ्रातरो लोकविश्रुताः ॥३-१३-२॥

(Of the Pāñcāla and heirs, Dhṛṣṭaketu and the king of the Cedis; the Kekayas and the brothers of great strength, famous in the world. (3-13-2))
The heirs of the Pāñcāla, Dhṛṣṭaketu, the king of the Cedis, the Kekayas, and the renowned brothers of great strength, all famous throughout the world, (3-13-2).
वने तेऽभिययुः पार्थान्क्रोधामर्शसमन्विताः। गर्हयन्तो धार्तराष्ट्रान्किं कुर्म इति चाब्रुवन् ॥३-१३-३॥
vane te'bhiyayuḥ pārthān krodhāmarṣasamanvitāḥ। garhayanto dhārtarāṣṭrān kiṃ kurma iti cābruvan॥3-13-3॥
[वने (vane) - in the forest; ते (te) - they; अभिययुः (abhiyayuḥ) - approached; पार्थान् (pārthān) - the sons of Pṛthā; क्रोध (krodha) - anger; अमर्श (amarṣa) - indignation; समन्विताः (samanvitāḥ) - endowed with; गर्हयन्तः (garhayantaḥ) - blaming; धार्तराष्ट्रान् (dhārtarāṣṭrān) - the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; किम् (kim) - what; कुर्म (kurma) - do (we); इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; अब्रुवन् (abravan) - they said;]
(In the forest they approached the sons of Pṛthā, endowed with anger and indignation, blaming the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, (saying) "What do we do?" thus and they said. (3-13-3))
In the forest, they approached the sons of Pṛthā, filled with anger and indignation, blaming the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, and said, "What should we do?" (3-13-3)
वासुदेवं पुरस्कृत्य सर्वे ते क्षत्रियर्षभाः। परिवार्योपविविशुर्धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥३-१३-४॥
vāsudevaṃ puraskṛtya sarve te kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ। parivāryopaviviśur dharmarājaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram ॥3-13-4॥
[वासुदेवं (vāsudevam) - Vāsudeva; (Krishna); पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - having placed in front; having honored; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ते (te) - those; क्षत्रियर्षभाः (kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ) - bulls among the kṣatriyas; foremost kṣatriyas; परिवार्य (parivārya) - having surrounded; उपविविशुः (upaviviśuḥ) - sat down near; धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - Dharmarāja; (Yudhiṣṭhira); युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Having placed Vāsudeva in front, all those foremost kṣatriyas, having surrounded, sat down near Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Having honored Vāsudeva at the forefront, all those foremost among the kṣatriyas surrounded and sat near Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira. (3-13-4)

दुर्योधनस्य कर्णस्य शकुनेश्च दुरात्मनः। दुःशासनचतुर्थानां भूमिः पास्यति शोणितम् ॥३-१३-५॥
duryodhanasya karṇasya śakuneś ca dur-ātmanaḥ। duḥśāsana-caturthānāṃ bhūmiḥ pāsyati śoṇitam ॥3-13-5॥
[दुर्योधनस्य (duryodhanasya) - of Duryodhana; कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of Karṇa; शकुनेः (śakuneḥ) - of Śakuni; च (ca) - and; दुरात्मनः (dur-ātmanaḥ) - of the evil-minded; दुःशासनचतुर्थानां (duḥśāsana-caturthānāṃ) - of Duḥśāsana and the fourth (one); भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - the earth; पास्यति (pāsyati) - will drink; शोणितम् (śoṇitam) - blood;]
(Of Duryodhana, of Karṇa, of Śakuni and of the evil-minded, of Duḥśāsana and the fourth, the earth will drink blood.)
The earth will drink the blood of Duryodhana, Karṇa, Śakuni the evil-minded, Duḥśāsana, and the fourth one. (3-13-5)
ततः सर्वेऽभिषिञ्चामो धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम्। निकृत्योपचरन्वध्य एष धर्मः सनातनः ॥३-१३-६॥
tataḥ sarve'bhiṣiñcāmo dharmarājaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram। nikṛtyopacaranvadhya eṣa dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ ॥3-13-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वे (sarve) - all; अभिषिञ्चामः (abhiṣiñcāmaḥ) - we anoint; धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - the king of dharma; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; निकृत्या (nikṛtyā) - by deceit; उपचरन् (upacaran) - serving; वध्यः (vadhyaḥ) - to be slain; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal;]
(Then all we anoint the king of dharma, Yudhishthira. By deceit, serving, to be slain, this dharma eternal.)
Then let us all anoint Yudhishthira, the king of dharma. To serve by deceit is to be slain; this is the eternal dharma. (3-13-6)

पार्थानामभिषङ्गेण तथा क्रुद्धं जनार्दनम्। अर्जुनः शमयामासा दिधक्षन्तमिव प्रजाः ॥३-१३-७॥
pārthānām-abhiṣaṅgeṇa tathā kruddhaṃ janārdanam। arjunaḥ śamayām-āsā didhakṣantam-iva prajāḥ ॥3-13-7॥
[पार्थानाम् (pārthānām) - of the sons of Pṛthā (Arjuna and his brothers); अभिषङ्गेण (abhiṣaṅgeṇa) - by the attack; तथा (tathā) - thus; क्रुद्धम् (kruddham) - angry; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa); अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; शमयाम् (śamayām) - to pacify; आस (āsā) - began; दिधक्षन्तम् (didhakṣantam) - desiring to burn; इव (iva) - as if; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures;]
(Of the sons of Pṛthā, by the attack, thus angry Janārdana; Arjuna began to pacify, desiring to burn as if creatures.)
When Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa) became angry due to the attack on the sons of Pṛthā, Arjuna began to pacify him, as if he was about to burn all creatures. (3-13-7)
सङ्क्रुद्धं केशवं दृष्ट्वा पूर्वदेहेषु फल्गुनः। कीर्तयामास कर्माणि सत्यकीर्तेर्महात्मनः ॥३-१३-८॥
saṅkruddhaṃ keśavaṃ dṛṣṭvā pūrvadeheṣu phalgunaḥ। kīrtayāmāsa karmāṇi satyakītermahātmanaḥ ॥3-13-8॥
[सङ्क्रुद्धम् (saṅkruddham) - greatly angered; केशवम् (keśavam) - Keśava; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पूर्वदेहेषु (pūrvadeheṣu) - in previous bodies; फल्गुनः (phalgunaḥ) - Phalguna; कीर्तयामास (kīrtayāmāsa) - began to praise; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - deeds; सत्यकीर्तेः (satyakīrteḥ) - of Satyakīrti; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled;]
(Greatly angered Keśava having seen in previous bodies Phalguna began to praise deeds of Satyakīrti, of the great-souled.)
When Phalguna saw Keśava greatly angered in his previous forms, he began to recount the deeds of the great-souled Satyakīrti. (3-13-8)
पुरुषस्याप्रमेयस्य सत्यस्यामिततेजसः। प्रजापतिपतेर्विष्णोर्लोकनाथस्य धीमतः ॥३-१३-९॥
puruṣasyāprameyasya satyasyāmitatejasaḥ। prajāpati-pater viṣṇor loka-nāthasya dhīmataḥ ॥3-13-9॥
[पुरुषस्य (puruṣasya) - of the person; (puruṣa: person, -sya: of;) अप्रमेयस्य (aprameyasya) - of the immeasurable; (a-: not, prameya: measurable, -sya: of;) सत्यस्य (satyasya) - of the true; (satya: true, -sya: of;) अमिततेजसः (amitatejasaḥ) - of the infinite radiance; (amita: infinite, tejas: radiance, -aḥ: of;) प्रजापतिपतेः (prajāpatipateḥ) - of the lord of Prajāpati; (prajāpati: lord of creatures, pateḥ: of the lord;) विष्णोः (viṣṇoḥ) - of Viṣṇu; (viṣṇu: Viṣṇu, -oḥ: of;) लोकनाथस्य (lokanāthasya) - of the lord of the worlds; (loka: world, nātha: lord, -sya: of;) धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - of the wise; (dhīmat: wise, -aḥ: of;);]
(Of the person, of the immeasurable, of the true, of the infinite radiance; of the lord of Prajāpati, of Viṣṇu, of the lord of the worlds, of the wise. (3-13-9))

दश वर्षसहस्राणि यत्रसायङ्गृहो मुनिः। व्यचरस्त्वं पुरा कृष्ण पर्वते गन्धमादने ॥३-१३-१०॥
daśa varṣasahasrāṇi yatrasāyaṅgṛho muniḥ। vyacaras tvaṃ purā kṛṣṇa parvate gandhamādane ॥3-13-10॥
[दश (daśa) - ten; वर्षसहस्राणि (varṣasahasrāṇi) - thousand years; यत्र (yatra) - where; सायङ्गृहो (sāyaṅgṛhaḥ) - evening-dwelling; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; व्यचरः (vyacaraḥ) - wandered; त्वम् (tvam) - you; पुरा (purā) - formerly; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Kṛṣṇa; पर्वते (parvate) - on the mountain; गन्धमादने (gandhamādane) - Gandhamādana;]
(Ten thousand years where the evening-dwelling sage wandered, you formerly, O Kṛṣṇa, on the Gandhamādana mountain.)
O Kṛṣṇa, formerly, you wandered for ten thousand years together with the evening-dwelling sage on Mount Gandhamādana. (3-13-10)
दश वर्षसहस्राणि दश वर्षशतानि च। पुष्करेष्ववसः कृष्ण त्वमपो भक्षयन्पुरा ॥३-१३-११॥
daśa varṣasahasrāṇi daśa varṣaśatāni ca। puṣkareṣv avasaḥ kṛṣṇa tvam apo bhakṣayan purā ॥3-13-11॥
[दश (daśa) - ten; वर्षसहस्राणि (varṣasahasrāṇi) - years-thousands; दश (daśa) - ten; वर्षशतानि (varṣaśatāni) - years-hundreds; च (ca) - and; पुष्करेषु (puṣkareṣu) - in the Puṣkaras (sacred lakes); अवसः (avasaḥ) - dwelling; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Kṛṣṇa; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपः (apo) - waters; भक्षयन् (bhakṣayan) - eating; पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(Ten thousands of years, ten hundreds of years and, in the Puṣkaras dwelling, O Kṛṣṇa, you waters eating formerly.)
O Kṛṣṇa, formerly, you dwelt in the Puṣkaras for ten thousand years and ten hundred years, subsisting on water. (3-13-11)
ऊर्ध्वबाहुर्विशालायां बदर्यां मधुसूदन। अतिष्ठ एकपादेन वायुभक्षः शतं समाः ॥३-१३-१२॥
ūrdhvabāhur-viśālāyāṃ badaryāṃ madhusūdana। atiṣṭha ekapādena vāyubhakṣaḥ śataṃ samāḥ ॥3-13-12॥
[ऊर्ध्वबाहुः (ūrdhvabāhuḥ) - with arms raised upward; विशालायाम् (viśālāyām) - in Viśālā (the place); बदर्याम् (badaryām) - in Badarī (the place); मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O Madhusūdana; अतिष्ठ (atiṣṭha) - stood; एकपादेन (ekapādena) - on one foot; वायुभक्षः (vāyubhakṣaḥ) - subsisting on air; शतम् (śatam) - a hundred; समाः (samāḥ) - years;]
(With arms raised upward, in Viśālā, in Badarī, O Madhusūdana, he stood on one foot, subsisting on air, for a hundred years.)
O Madhusūdana, in Viśālā, at Badarī, he stood with arms raised, on one foot, subsisting only on air, for a hundred years. (3-13-12)
अपकृष्टोत्तरासङ्गः कृशो धमनिसन्ततः। आसीः कृष्ण सरस्वत्यां सत्रे द्वादशवार्षिके ॥३-१३-१३॥
apakṛṣṭottarāsaṅgaḥ kṛśo dhamanisantataḥ। āsīḥ kṛṣṇa sarasvatyāṃ satre dvādaśavārṣike ॥3-13-13॥
[अपकृष्ट (apakṛṣṭa) - removed; withdrawn; उत्तर (uttara) - upper; northern; आसङ्गः (āsaṅgaḥ) - attachment; connection; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - thin; emaciated; धमनि (dhamani) - artery; vessel; सन्ततः (santataḥ) - continuous; extended; आसीः (āsīḥ) - was; existed; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; (name); सरस्वत्याम् (sarasvatyām) - on the Sarasvatī (river); सत्रे (satre) - in the sacrificial session; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; वार्षिके (vārṣike) - yearly; annual;]
(Removed upper attachment, thin, with continuous arteries, was Kṛṣṇa on the Sarasvatī, in the twelve-year sacrificial session.)
Kṛṣṇa, who was thin, with his upper body withdrawn and veins visible, was present on the Sarasvatī river during the twelve-year sacrificial session. (3-13-13)
प्रभासं चाप्यथासाद्य तीर्थं पुण्यजनोचितम्। तथा कृष्ण महातेजा दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रकम् ॥ आतिष्ठस्तप एकेन पादेन नियमे स्थितः ॥३-१३-१४॥
prabhāsaṃ cāpyathāsādya tīrthaṃ puṇyajanocitam। tathā kṛṣṇa mahātejā divyaṃ varṣasahasrakam ॥ ātiṣṭhastapa ekena pādena niyame sthitaḥ ॥3-13-14॥
[प्रभासम् (prabhāsam) - Prabhāsa; (a sacred place); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अथ (atha) - then; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - holy place; पुण्यजनोचितम् (puṇyajanocitam) - fit for virtuous people; तथा (tathā) - thus; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; महातेजा (mahātejā) - of great brilliance; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; वर्षसहस्रकम् (varṣasahasrakam) - a thousand years; आतिष्ठत् (ātiṣṭhat) - undertook; तप (tapa) - austerity; एकेन (ekena) - on one; पादेन (pādena) - foot; नियमे (niyame) - in discipline; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing;]
(Having reached Prabhāsa, also then, the holy place fit for virtuous people, thus Kṛṣṇa of great brilliance undertook divine austerity for a thousand years, standing on one foot in discipline.)
Kṛṣṇa, of great brilliance, having reached Prabhāsa, the holy place suitable for the virtuous, thus performed divine austerity for a thousand years, standing on one foot in strict discipline. (3-13-14)
क्षेत्रज्ञः सर्वभूतानामादिरन्तश्च केशव। निधानं तपसां कृष्ण यज्ञस्त्वं च सनातनः ॥३-१३-१५॥
kṣetrajñaḥ sarvabhūtānām ādir antaś ca keśava। nidhānaṃ tapasāṃ kṛṣṇa yajñas tvaṃ ca sanātanaḥ ॥3-13-15॥
[क्षेत्रज्ञः (kṣetrajñaḥ) - knower of the field; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; आदि: (ādiḥ) - origin; अन्तः (antaḥ) - end; च (ca) - and; केशव (keśava) - O Keśava; निधानम् (nidhānam) - abode; तपसाम् (tapasām) - of austerities; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Kṛṣṇa; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; त्वम् (tvam) - you; च (ca) - and; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal;]
(Knower of the field of all beings, origin, end, and O Keśava; abode of austerities, O Kṛṣṇa, sacrifice, you and eternal.)
O Keśava, you are the knower of the field of all beings, the origin and the end; O Kṛṣṇa, you are the abode of austerities, the sacrifice, and the eternal one. (3-13-15)
निहत्य नरकं भौममाहृत्य मणिकुण्डले। प्रथमोत्पादितं कृष्ण मेध्यमश्वमवासृजः ॥३-१३-१६॥
nihatya narakaṃ bhaumam āhṛtya maṇikuṇḍale। prathamotpāditaṃ kṛṣṇa medhyam aśvam avāsṛjaḥ ॥3-13-16॥
[निहत्य (nihatya) - having slain; नरकं (narakaṃ) - Naraka (the demon); भौमम् (bhaumam) - son of Bhūmi (Earth); आहृत्य (āhṛtya) - having brought; मणिकुण्डले (maṇikuṇḍale) - the jeweled earrings; प्रथमोत्पादितं (prathamotpāditaṃ) - first produced; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Kṛṣṇa; मेध्यम् (medhyam) - sacred; अश्वम् (aśvam) - horse; अवासृजः (avāsṛjaḥ) - you released;]
(Having slain Naraka, the son of Bhūmi, having brought the jeweled earrings, the first produced, O Kṛṣṇa, you released the sacred horse.)
O Kṛṣṇa, after killing Naraka, the son of Bhūmi, and bringing the jeweled earrings, you released the sacred horse that was first produced. (3-13-16)
कृत्वा तत्कर्म लोकानामृषभः सर्वलोकजित्। अवधीस्त्वं रणे सर्वान्समेतान्दैत्यदानवान् ॥३-१३-१७॥
kṛtvā tat-karma lokānām-ṛṣabhaḥ sarva-loka-jit। avadhīs tvaṃ raṇe sarvān sametān daitya-dānavān ॥3-13-17॥
[कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; तत् (tat) - that; कर्म (karma) - action; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; ऋषभः (ṛṣabhaḥ) - bull; chief; सर्वलोकजित् (sarva-loka-jit) - conqueror of all worlds; अवधीः (avadhīḥ) - you killed; त्वम् (tvam) - you; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; समेतान् (sametān) - assembled; gathered; दैत्यदानवान् (daitya-dānavān) - Daityas and Dānavas;]
(Having done that action, O chief of the worlds, conqueror of all worlds, you killed in battle all the assembled Daityas and Dānavas.)
Having performed that deed, O chief among the worlds and conqueror of all worlds, you slew in battle all the assembled Daityas and Dānavas. (3-13-17)
ततः सर्वेश्वरत्वं च सम्प्रदाय शचीपतेः। मानुषेषु महाबाहो प्रादुर्भूतोऽसि केशव ॥३-१३-१८॥
tataḥ sarveśvaratvaṃ ca sampradāya śacīpateḥ। mānuṣeṣu mahābāho prādurbhūto'si keśava ॥3-13-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वेश्वरत्वं (sarveśvaratvam) - supremacy over all lords; च (ca) - and; सम्प्रदाय (sampradāya) - having bestowed; शचीपतेः (śacīpateḥ) - of the lord of Śacī (Indra); मानुषेषु (mānuṣeṣu) - among men; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; प्रादुर्भूतः (prādurbhūtaḥ) - manifested; असि (asi) - you are; केशव (keśava) - Keśava;]
(Then, having bestowed supremacy over all lords to the lord of Śacī, among men, O mighty-armed Keśava, you have manifested.)
Then, having given the lordship over all to Indra, you, O mighty-armed Keśava, have manifested among men. (3-13-18)
स त्वं नारायणो भूत्वा हरिरासीः परन्तप। ब्रह्मा सोमश्च सूर्यश्च धर्मो धाता यमोऽनलः ॥३-१३-१९॥

You, O scorcher of foes, having become Nārāyaṇa, were Hari; you are also Brahmā, Soma, Sūrya, Dharma, Dhātā, Yama, and Anala. (3-13-19)
वायुर्वैश्रवणो रुद्रः कालः खं पृथिवी दिशः। अजश्चराचरगुरुः स्रष्टा त्वं पुरुषोत्तम ॥३-१३-२०॥
vāyurvaiśravaṇo rudraḥ kālaḥ khaṃ pṛthivī diśaḥ। ajaścarācaraguruḥ sraṣṭā tvaṃ puruṣottama ॥3-13-20॥

तुरायणादिभिर्देव क्रतुभिर्भूरिदक्षिणैः। अयजो भूरितेजा वै कृष्ण चैत्ररथे वने ॥३-१३-२१॥
turāyaṇādibhirdeva kratubhirbhūridakṣiṇaiḥ। ayajo bhūritejā vai kṛṣṇa caitrarathe vane ॥3-13-21॥
[तुरायणादिभिः (turāyaṇādibhiḥ) - by Turāyaṇa and others; देव (deva) - O god; क्रतुभिः (kratubhiḥ) - by sacrifices; भूरिदक्षिणैः (bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ) - with abundant gifts; अयजः (ayajaḥ) - you were worshipped; भूरितेजा (bhūritejā) - of great splendor; वै (vai) - indeed; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Kṛṣṇa; चैत्ररथे (caitrarathe) - in Caitraratha; वने (vane) - in the forest;]
(By Turāyaṇa and others, O god, by sacrifices with abundant gifts, you were worshipped, O one of great splendor, indeed, O Kṛṣṇa, in the Caitraratha forest.)
O Kṛṣṇa, in the Caitraratha forest, you were indeed worshipped by Turāyaṇa and others, O god, with sacrifices accompanied by abundant gifts, O one of great splendor. (3-13-21)
शतं शतसहस्राणि सुवर्णस्य जनार्दन। एकैकस्मिंस्तदा यज्ञे परिपूर्णानि भागशः ॥३-१३-२२॥
śataṃ śatasahasrāṇi suvarṇasya janārdana। ekaikasmiṃstadā yajñe paripūrṇāni bhāgaśaḥ ॥3-13-22॥

(Hundred hundred-thousands of gold, O Janārdana; in each one then in the sacrifice, completely filled in portions.)
O Janārdana, in each sacrifice at that time, there were hundreds of hundreds of thousands of pieces of gold, each portion being completely filled. (3-13-22)
अदितेरपि पुत्रत्वमेत्य यादवनन्दन। त्वं विष्णुरिति विख्यात इन्द्रादवरजो भुवि ॥३-१३-२३॥
aditer api putratvam etya yādava-nandana। tvaṁ viṣṇur iti vikhyāta indrād avarajo bhuvi ॥3-13-23॥

(O delight of the Yādavas, having attained sonship of Aditi also, you are well-known on earth as Viṣṇu, the younger brother of Indra.)
O Yādava-nandana, you are also known on earth as Viṣṇu, the younger brother of Indra, having become the son of Aditi. (3-13-23)
शिशुर्भूत्वा दिवं खं च पृथिवीं च परन्तप। त्रिभिर्विक्रमणैः कृष्ण क्रान्तवानसि तेजसा ॥३-१३-२४॥
śiśur bhūtvā divaṃ khaṃ ca pṛthivīṃ ca parantapa। tribhir vikramaṇaiḥ kṛṣṇa krāntavān asi tejasā ॥3-13-24॥

(Having become a child, heaven, sky and earth, O scorcher of foes, with three strides, O Kṛṣṇa, you have traversed by brilliance.)
O Kṛṣṇa, having assumed the form of a child, you traversed heaven, sky, and earth in three strides by your brilliance, O scorcher of foes. (3-13-24)
सम्प्राप्य दिवमाकाशमादित्यसदने स्थितः। अत्यरोचश्च भूतात्मन्भास्करं स्वेन तेजसा ॥३-१३-२५॥
samprāpya divam ākāśam ādityasadane sthitaḥ। atyarocaś ca bhūtātman bhāskaraṃ svena tejasā ॥3-13-25॥
[सम्प्राप्य (samprāpya) - having attained; having reached; दिवम् (divam) - heaven; sky; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - ether; space; आदित्यसदने (ādityasadane) - in the abode of the sun; in the house of the sun; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - having stood; having remained; अत्यरोचत् (atyarocat) - shone exceedingly; became very bright; च (ca) - and; भूतात्मन् (bhūtātman) - O soul of beings; O essence of beings; भास्करम् (bhāskaram) - the sun; illuminator; स्वेन (svena) - by his own; with his own; तेजसा (tejasā) - splendour; brilliance;]
(Having attained heaven, ether, and having stood in the abode of the sun, he shone exceedingly, and O soul of beings, the sun with his own brilliance.)
Having reached heaven and space, and having taken his place in the abode of the sun, he shone brilliantly; O soul of beings, the sun shone with his own radiance. (3-13-25)
सादिता मौरवाः पाशा निसुन्दनरकौ हतौ। कृतः क्षेमः पुनः पन्थाः पुरं प्राग्ज्योतिषं प्रति ॥३-१३-२६॥
sāditā mauravāḥ pāśā nisundanarakau hatau। kṛtaḥ kṣemaḥ punaḥ panthāḥ puraṃ prāgjyotiṣaṃ prati ॥3-13-26॥

(Struck down were the nooses of Mura; Nisunda and Naraka were killed. Safety was made; again the path to the city Prāgjyotiṣa was (made). (3-13-26))
The nooses of Mura were destroyed, Nisunda and Naraka were slain. Safety was restored, and once again the way to the city of Prāgjyotiṣa was opened. (3-13-26)
जारूथ्यामाहुतिः क्राथः शिशुपालो जनैः सह। भीमसेनश्च शैब्यश्च शतधन्वा च निर्जितः ॥३-१३-२७॥
jārūthyām āhutiḥ krāthaḥ śiśupālo janaiḥ saha। bhīmasenaś ca śaibyaś ca śatadhanvā ca nirjitaḥ ॥3-13-27॥
[जारूथ्याम् (jārūthyām) - in the city of Jārūthya; आहुतिः (āhutiḥ) - Āhuti; क्राथः (krāthaḥ) - Krātha; शिशुपालः (śiśupālaḥ) - Śiśupāla; जनैः (janaiḥ) - by people; सह (saha) - together with; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; च (ca) - and; शैब्यः (śaibyaḥ) - Śaibya; च (ca) - and; शतधन्वा (śatadhanvā) - Śatadhanvā; च (ca) - and; निर्जितः (nirjitaḥ) - defeated;]

तथा पर्जन्यघोषेण रथेनादित्यवर्चसा। अवाक्षीर्महिषीं भोज्यां रणे निर्जित्य रुक्मिणम् ॥३-१३-२८॥
tathā parjanya-ghoṣeṇa rathena āditya-varcasā। avākṣīr mahiṣīṃ bhojyāṃ raṇe nirjitya rukmiṇam ॥3-13-28॥

इन्द्रद्युम्नो हतः कोपाद्यवनश्च कशेरुमान्। हतः सौभपतिः शाल्वस्त्वया सौभं च पातितम् ॥३-१३-२९॥

Indradyumna was killed; out of anger, Yavana and Kaśerumān were also killed; the lord of Saubha, Śālva, was killed by you, and the Saubha (aerial city) was brought down as well. (3-13-29)
इरावत्यां तथा भोजः कार्तवीर्यसमो युधि। गोपतिस्तालकेतुश्च त्वया विनिहतावुभौ ॥३-१३-३०॥
irāvatyāṃ tathā bhojaḥ kārtavīryasamo yudhi। gopatistālaketuś ca tvayā vinihatāv ubhau ॥3-13-30॥

तां च भोगवतीं पुण्यामृषिकान्तां जनार्दन। द्वारकामात्मसात्कृत्वा समुद्रं गमयिष्यसि ॥३-१३-३१॥
tāṃ ca bhogavatīṃ puṇyām ṛṣikāntāṃ janārdana। dvārakām ātmasātkṛtvā samudraṃ gamayiṣyasi ॥3-13-31॥

O Janardana, having made Dvaraka, the auspicious and enjoyment-filled city beloved of the sages, your own, you will cause the ocean to move. (3-13-31)
न क्रोधो न च मात्सर्यं नानृतं मधुसूदन। त्वयि तिष्ठति दाशार्ह न नृशंस्यं कुतोऽनृजु ॥३-१३-३२॥
na krodho na ca mātsaryaṃ nānṛtaṃ madhusūdana। tvayi tiṣṭhati dāśārha na nṛśaṃsyaṃ kuto'nṛju ॥3-13-32॥
[न (na) - not; क्रोधः (krodhaḥ) - anger; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मात्सर्यं (mātsaryaṃ) - envy; न (na) - not; अनृतं (anṛtam) - falsehood; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O Madhusūdana; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - abides; दाशार्ह (dāśārha) - O descendant of Daśārha; न (na) - not; नृशंस्यं (nṛśaṃsyaṃ) - cruelty; कुतः (kutaḥ) - whence; अनृजु (anṛju) - dishonesty;]
(Not anger, not and envy, not falsehood, O Madhusūdana, in you abides, O descendant of Daśārha, not cruelty, whence dishonesty.)
O Madhusūdana, in you, O descendant of Daśārha, there is no anger, nor envy, nor falsehood; there is not even cruelty, so how could there be dishonesty? (3-13-32)
आसीनं चित्तमध्ये त्वां दीप्यमानं स्वतेजसा। आगम्य ऋषयः सर्वेऽयाचन्ताभयमच्युत ॥३-१३-३३॥
āsīnaṃ cittamadhye tvāṃ dīpyamānaṃ svatejasā। āgamya ṛṣayaḥ sarve' yācantābhayamacyuta ॥3-13-33॥

(Seated in the midst of the mind, you, shining by your own brilliance; having approached, all the sages requested fearlessness, O Acyuta.)
O Acyuta, seated in the center of the mind and shining with your own brilliance, all the sages approached you and requested fearlessness. (3-13-33)
युगान्ते सर्वभूतानि सङ्क्षिप्य मधुसूदन। आत्मन्येवात्मसात्कृत्वा जगदास्से परन्तप ॥३-१३-३४॥
yugānte sarvabhūtāni saṅkṣipya madhusūdana। ātmanyevātmasātkṛtvā jagadāsse parantapa ॥3-13-34॥
[युगान्ते (yugānte) - at the end of the age; सर्वभूतानि (sarvabhūtāni) - all beings; सङ्क्षिप्य (saṅkṣipya) - having withdrawn; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O slayer of Madhu; आत्मनि (ātmani) - in the Self; एव (eva) - indeed; आत्मसात्कृत्वा (ātmasātkṛtvā) - having absorbed into the Self; जगत् (jagat) - the world; आस्से (āsse) - remains; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes;]
(At the end of the age, all beings having been withdrawn, O slayer of Madhu, having absorbed them into the Self, the world remains in the Self, O scorcher of foes.)
O scorcher of foes, at the end of the age, O slayer of Madhu, having withdrawn all beings and having absorbed the world into the Self, He remains in the Self. (3-13-34)
नैवं पूर्वे नापरे वा करिष्यन्ति कृतानि ते। कर्माणि यानि देव त्वं बाल एव महाद्युते ॥३-१३-३५॥
naivaṃ pūrve nāpare vā kariṣyanti kṛtāni te। karmāṇi yāni deva tvaṃ bāla eva mahādyute ॥3-13-35॥
[न (na) - not; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; पूर्वे (pūrve) - former ones; न (na) - not; अपरे (apare) - later ones; वा (vā) - or; करिष्यन्ति (kariṣyanti) - will do; कृतानि (kṛtāni) - done; ते (te) - by you; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; यानि (yāni) - which; देव (deva) - O divine one; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; बाल (bāla) - child; एव (eva) - indeed; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly radiant one;]
(Not thus former ones nor later ones or will do the actions done by you, which, O divine one, you, child indeed, O greatly radiant one.)
Neither those before nor those after will perform the deeds you have done, O divine one, you, even as a child, O greatly radiant one. (3-13-35)
कृतवान्पुण्डरीकाक्ष बलदेवसहायवान्। वैराजभवने चापि ब्रह्मणा न्यवसः सह ॥३-१३-३६॥
kṛtavān puṇḍarīkākṣa baladevasahāyavān। vairājabhavane cāpi brahmaṇā nyavasaḥ saha ॥3-13-36॥

O lotus-eyed one, having accomplished (your task), with the help of Baladeva, you also dwelt together with Brahmā in the palace of Virāja. (3-13-36)

ममैव त्वं तवैवाहं ये मदीयास्तवैव ते। यस्त्वां द्वेष्टि स मां द्वेष्टि यस्त्वामनु स मामनु ॥३-१३-३८॥
mamaiva tvaṃ tavaivāhaṃ ye madīyās tavaiva te। yastvāṃ dveṣṭi sa māṃ dveṣṭi yastvām-anu sa mām-anu ॥3-13-38॥

(You are man, difficult to overcome; I am indeed Hari, Nārāyaṇa. From world to world, to this world, arrived, Nara and Nārāyaṇa, sages.)
You are Nara, the unconquerable; I am indeed Hari, Nārāyaṇa. From world to world, we, the sages Nara and Nārāyaṇa, have arrived in this world. (3-13-39)
अनन्यः पार्थ मत्तस्त्वमहं त्वत्तश्च भारत। नावयोरन्तरं शक्यं वेदितुं भरतर्षभ ॥३-१३-४०॥
ananyaḥ pārtha mattastvamahaṃ tvattaśca bhārata। nāvayorantaraṃ śakyaṃ vedituṃ bharatarṣabha ॥3-13-40॥
[अनन्यः (ananyaḥ) - not-other; unique; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; मत्तः (mattas) - from me; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata; न (na) - not; अवयोः (avayoḥ) - of us two; अन्तरम् (antaram) - difference; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; वेदितुम् (veditum) - to know; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Not-other, O son of Pṛthā, from me you, I from you and, O descendant of Bharata. Not of us two difference possible to know, O best of the Bharatas.)
O Pārtha, you are not different from me, nor am I different from you, O Bhārata. It is not possible to know any difference between us two, O best of the Bharatas. (3-13-40)
तस्मिन्वीरसमावाये संरब्धेष्वथ राजसु। धृष्टद्युम्नमुखैर्वीरैर्भ्रातृभिः परिवारिता ॥३-१३-४१॥
tasmin vīrasamāvāye saṁrabdheṣv atha rājasu। dhṛṣṭadyumnamukhair vīrair bhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritā ॥3-13-41॥

(The daughter of Pāñcāla, having approached the lotus-eyed (one) seated together with the Yādavas, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), seeking refuge, said to the refuge.)
Pāñcālī, Draupadī, approached the lotus-eyed Kṛṣṇa, who was seated with the Yādavas, and, seeking refuge, spoke to him as her protector. (3-13-42)
पूर्वे प्रजानिसर्गे त्वामाहुरेकं प्रजापतिम्। स्रष्टारं सर्वभूतानामसितो देवलोऽब्रवीत् ॥३-१३-४३॥
pūrve prajānisarge tvām āhur ekaṃ prajāpatiṃ। sraṣṭāraṃ sarvabhūtānām asito devalo'bravīt ॥3-13-43॥

(In former times, at the creation of beings, they said you (are) the one lord of creatures, the creator of all beings; Asita and Devala said (this).)
In ancient times, at the beginning of creation, Asita and Devala declared you to be the sole lord of creatures, the creator of all beings. (3-13-43)
विष्णुस्त्वमसि दुर्धर्ष त्वं यज्ञो मधुसूदन। यष्टा त्वमसि यष्टव्यो जामदग्न्यो यथाब्रवीत् ॥३-१३-४४॥

(Viṣṇu you are, difficult to overcome, you sacrifice, Madhusūdana. Sacrificer you are, to be sacrificed to, descendant of Jamadagni, as said.)
You are Viṣṇu, the unconquerable, you are the sacrifice, O Madhusūdana. You are the sacrificer and the one to whom sacrifice is offered, as the descendant of Jamadagni has said. (3-13-44)
ऋषयस्त्वां क्षमामाहुः सत्यं च पुरुषोत्तम। सत्याद्यज्ञोऽसि सम्भूतः कश्यपस्त्वां यथाब्रवीत् ॥३-१३-४५॥
ṛṣayastvāṃ kṣamāmāhuḥ satyaṃ ca puruṣottama। satyādyajño'si sambhūtaḥ kaśyapastvāṃ yathābravīt ॥3-13-45॥

(Sages you forbearance have called; truth and O best of men; from truth sacrifice you are arisen; Kaśyapa you as has said;)
O best of men, sages have called you forbearance and truth; from truth, sacrifice has arisen, as Kaśyapa has said to you. (3-13-45)
साध्यानामपि देवानां वसूनामीश्वरेश्वरः। लोकभावन लोकेश यथा त्वां नारदोऽब्रवीत् ॥३-१३-४६॥
sādhyānām api devānām vasūnām īśvareśvaraḥ। lokabhāvana lokeśa yathā tvāṃ nārado'bravīt ॥3-13-46॥

O lord of lords, creator of the worlds, lord of the world, as Nārada said to you, even among the Sādhyas, gods, and Vasus. (3-13-46)
दिवं ते शिरसा व्याप्तं पद्भ्यां च पृथिवी विभो। जठरं ते इमे लोकाः पुरुषोऽसि सनातनः ॥३-१३-४७॥
divaṃ te śirasā vyāptaṃ padbhyāṃ ca pṛthivī vibho। jaṭharaṃ te ime lokāḥ puruṣo'si sanātanaḥ ॥3-13-47॥
[दिवं (divam) - heaven; ते (te) - your; शिरसा (śirasā) - by (your) head; व्याप्तं (vyāptam) - pervaded; पद्भ्यां (padbhyām) - by (your) feet; च (ca) - and; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; विभो (vibho) - O all-pervading one; जठरं (jaṭharam) - belly; ते (te) - your; इमे (ime) - these; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - person; असि (asi) - are; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal;]
(Heaven is pervaded by your head, and the earth by your feet, O all-pervading one; your belly is these worlds; you are the eternal person.)
O all-pervading one, your head pervades the heavens, your feet the earth; your belly comprises these worlds. You are the eternal person. (3-13-47)
विद्यातपोऽभितप्तानां तपसा भावितात्मनाम्। आत्मदर्शनसिद्धानामृषीणामृषिसत्तम ॥३-१३-४८॥
vidyātapo'bhitaptānāṃ tapasā bhāvitātmanām। ātmadarśanasiddhānām ṛṣīṇām ṛṣisattama ॥3-13-48॥
[विद्या (vidyā) - knowledge; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; अभितप्तानाम् (abhitaptānām) - of those who are intensely heated (purified); तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; भावित (bhāvita) - cultivated; आत्मनाम् (ātmanām) - of selves; आत्मदर्शन (ātma-darśana) - self-realization; सिद्धानाम् (siddhānām) - of those who have attained; ऋषीणाम् (ṛṣīṇām) - of sages; ऋषिसत्तम (ṛṣi-sattama) - O best of sages;]
(Of those who are intensely purified by knowledge and austerity, whose selves are cultivated by austerity, of those sages who have attained self-realization, O best of sages.)
O best of sages, among those who are intensely purified by knowledge and austerity, whose selves have been cultivated by austerity, and who have attained self-realization, (this is said). (3-13-48)
राजर्षीणां पुण्यकृतामाहवेष्वनिवर्तिनाम्। सर्वधर्मोपपन्नानां त्वं गतिः पुरुषोत्तम ॥३-१३-४९॥
rājarṣīṇāṃ puṇyakṛtām āhaveṣv anivartinām। sarvadharmopapannānāṃ tvaṃ gatiḥ puruṣottama ॥3-13-49॥
[राजर्षीणां (rājarṣīṇām) - of royal sages; पुण्यकृताम् (puṇyakṛtām) - of those who perform meritorious deeds; आहवेषु (āhaveṣu) - in battles; अनिवर्तिनाम् (anivartinām) - of those who do not turn back; सर्वधर्मोपपन्नानां (sarvadharmopapannānām) - of those endowed with all dharmas; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; गतिः (gatiḥ) - the refuge; पुरुषोत्तम (puruṣottama) - O best of men;]
(Of royal sages, of those who perform meritorious deeds, in battles, of those who do not turn back, of those endowed with all dharmas, you are the refuge, O best of men.)
O best of men, you are the refuge for royal sages, for those who perform meritorious deeds, for those who do not turn back in battle, and for those endowed with all dharmas. (3-13-49)
त्वं प्रभुस्त्वं विभुस्त्वं भूरात्मभूस्त्वं सनातनः। लोकपालाश्च लोकाश्च नक्षत्राणि दिशो दश ॥ नभश्चन्द्रश्च सूर्यश्च त्वयि सर्वं प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥३-१३-५०॥
tvaṃ prabhus tvaṃ vibhus tvaṃ bhūr-ātma-bhūs tvaṃ sanātanaḥ। lokapālāś ca lokāś ca nakṣatrāṇi diśo daśa ॥ nabhaś candraś ca sūryaś ca tvayi sarvaṃ pratiṣṭhitam ॥3-13-50॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - master; त्वम् (tvam) - you; विभुः (vibhuḥ) - all-pervading; त्वम् (tvam) - you; भूः (bhūḥ) - earth; आत्म (ātma) - self; भूः (bhūḥ) - existence; त्वम् (tvam) - you; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; लोकपालाः (lokapālāḥ) - guardians of the worlds; च (ca) - and; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; च (ca) - and; नक्षत्राणि (nakṣatrāṇi) - stars; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; दश (daśa) - ten; नभः (nabhaḥ) - sky; च (ca) - and; चन्द्रः (candraḥ) - moon; च (ca) - and; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - sun; च (ca) - and; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; प्रतिष्ठितम् (pratiṣṭhitam) - established;]
(You are the master, you are the all-pervading, you are the earth, self, existence, you are the eternal; the guardians of the worlds and the worlds and the stars, the ten directions, the sky, and the moon and the sun and in you all is established.)
You are the master, the all-pervading one, the earth, the self, existence, and the eternal; the guardians of the worlds, the worlds, the stars, the ten directions, the sky, the moon, and the sun—all are established in you. (3-13-50)
मर्त्यता चैव भूतानाममरत्वं दिवौकसाम्। त्वयि सर्वं महाबाहो लोककार्यं प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥३-१३-५१॥
martyatā caiva bhūtānām amaratvaṃ divaukasām। tvayi sarvaṃ mahābāho lokakāryaṃ pratiṣṭhitam ॥3-13-51॥
[मर्त्यता (martyatā) - mortality; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; अमरत्वं (amaratvaṃ) - immortality; दिवौकसाम् (divaukasām) - of the dwellers of heaven; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; लोककार्यं (lokakāryaṃ) - the work of the worlds; प्रतिष्ठितम् (pratiṣṭhitam) - is established;]
(Mortality and indeed of beings, immortality of the dwellers of heaven; in you all, O mighty-armed, the work of the worlds is established.)
Mortality for beings and immortality for the dwellers of heaven—O mighty-armed one, all the work of the worlds is established in you. (3-13-51)
सा तेऽहं दुःखमाख्यास्ये प्रणयान्मधुसूदन। ईशस्त्वं सर्वभूतानां ये दिव्या ये च मानुषाः ॥३-१३-५२॥
sā te'haṃ duḥkham ākhyāsyē praṇayān madhusūdana। īśas tvaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ ye divyā ye ca mānuṣāḥ ॥3-13-52॥
[सा (sā) - she; that woman; ते (te) - to you; अहम् (aham) - I; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; pain; आख्यास्ये (ākhyāsyē) - will tell; will relate; प्रणयान् (praṇayān) - out of affection; from love; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O Madhusudana; slayer of Madhu; ईशः (īśaḥ) - lord; master; त्वम् (tvam) - you; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; ये (ye) - who; those; दिव्याः (divyāḥ) - divine; celestial; ये (ye) - who; those; च (ca) - and; मानुषाः (mānuṣāḥ) - human; men;]
(She to you I sorrow will tell out of affection, O Madhusudana; lord you of all beings, who are divine, who and human.)
Out of affection, O Madhusudana, I will tell you my sorrow; you are the lord of all beings, both divine and human. (3-13-52)
कथं नु भार्या पार्थानां तव कृष्ण सखी विभो। धृष्टद्युम्नस्य भगिनी सभां कृष्येत मादृशी ॥३-१३-५३॥
kathaṁ nu bhāryā pārthānāṁ tava kṛṣṇa sakhī vibho। dhṛṣṭadyumnasya bhaginī sabhāṁ kṛṣyeta mādṛśī ॥3-13-53॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; पार्थानां (pārthānāṁ) - of the sons of Pṛthā; तव (tava) - your; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa (Draupadī); सखी (sakhī) - friend; विभो (vibho) - O lord; धृष्टद्युम्नस्य (dhṛṣṭadyumnasya) - of Dhṛṣṭadyumna; भगिनी (bhaginī) - sister; सभां (sabhāṁ) - assembly; कृष्येत (kṛṣyeta) - should be dragged; मादृशी (mādṛśī) - like me;]
(How indeed the wife of the sons of Pṛthā, your friend Kṛṣṇa, O lord, the sister of Dhṛṣṭadyumna, like me, should be dragged into the assembly.)
O lord, how could a woman like me—Kṛṣṇa, the wife of the Pārthas, your friend, and the sister of Dhṛṣṭadyumna—be dragged into the assembly? (3-13-53)
स्त्रीधर्मिणी वेपमाना रुधिरेण समुक्षिता। एकवस्त्रा विकृष्टास्मि दुःखिता कुरुसंसदि ॥३-१३-५४॥
strīdharmaṇī vepamānā rudhireṇa samukṣitā। ekavastrā vikṛṣṭāsmi duḥkhitā kurusaṃsadi ॥3-13-54॥
[स्त्रीधर्मिणी (strīdharmaṇī) - woman-observing-her-duty; वेपमाना (vepamānā) - trembling; रुधिरेण (rudhireṇa) - with blood; समुक्षिता (samukṣitā) - thoroughly sprinkled; एकवस्त्रा (ekavastrā) - with a single garment; विकृष्टास्मि (vikṛṣṭāsmi) - I am dragged; दुःखिता (duḥkhitā) - afflicted; कुरुसंसदि (kurusaṃsadi) - in the assembly of the Kurus;]
(Woman-observing-her-duty, trembling, with blood thoroughly sprinkled, with a single garment, I am dragged, afflicted, in the assembly of the Kurus.)
I, a woman devoted to her duty, trembling and sprinkled with blood, wearing a single garment, have been dragged and afflicted in the assembly of the Kurus. (3-13-54)
राजमध्ये सभायां तु रजसाभिसमीरिताम्। दृष्ट्वा च मां धार्तराष्ट्राः प्राहसन्पापचेतसः ॥३-१३-५५॥
rājamadhye sabhāyāṃ tu rajasābhisamīritām। dṛṣṭvā ca māṃ dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ prāhasan pāpacetasaḥ ॥3-13-55॥
[राजमध्ये (rājamadhye) - in the midst of the kings; सभायाम् (sabhāyām) - in the assembly; तु (tu) - but; रजसा (rajasā) - with dust; अभिसमीरिताम् (abhisamīritām) - covered; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; धार्तराष्ट्राः (dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ) - the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; प्राहसन् (prāhasan) - laughed; पापचेतसः (pāpacetasaḥ) - evil-minded;]
(In the midst of the kings in the assembly but with dust covered, having seen and me the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra laughed evil-minded.)
But in the midst of the kings, in the assembly, when they saw me covered with dust, the evil-minded sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra laughed. (3-13-55)
दासीभावेन भोक्तुं मामीषुस्ते मधुसूदन। जीवत्सु पाण्डुपुत्रेषु पाञ्चालेष्वथ वृष्णिषु ॥३-१३-५६॥
dāsī-bhāvena bhoktuṃ mām īṣuḥ te madhusūdana। jīvatsu pāṇḍu-putreṣu pāñcāleṣu atha vṛṣṇiṣu ॥3-13-56॥
[दासीभावेन (dāsī-bhāvena) - with the condition/state of a female servant; भोक्तुम् (bhoktum) - to enjoy; to experience; माम् (mām) - me; ईषुः (īṣuḥ) - they desire; ते (te) - those; they; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O Madhusudana; O slayer of Madhu; जीवत्सु (jīvatsu) - while living; being alive; पाण्डुपुत्रेषु (pāṇḍu-putreṣu) - among the sons of Pandu; पाञ्चालेषु (pāñcāleṣu) - among the Panchalas; अथ (atha) - and; then; वृष्णिषु (vṛṣṇiṣu) - among the Vrishnis;]
(With the condition of a female servant to enjoy me they desire, O Madhusudana, while the sons of Pandu, the Panchalas, and the Vrishnis are alive.)
O Madhusudana, they desire to enjoy me as a servant while the sons of Pandu, the Panchalas, and the Vrishnis are still alive. (3-13-56)
नन्वहं कृष्ण भीष्मस्य धृतराष्ट्रस्य चोभयोः। स्नुषा भवामि धर्मेण साहं दासीकृता बलात् ॥३-१३-५७॥
nanvahaṃ kṛṣṇa bhīṣmasya dhṛtarāṣṭrasya cobhayoḥ। snuṣā bhavāmi dharmeṇa sāhaṃ dāsīkṛtā balāt ॥3-13-57॥

(Indeed I, O Kṛṣṇa, of Bhīṣma and Dhṛtarāṣṭra both, daughter-in-law I become by righteousness; she I, made a slave-woman by force.)
O Kṛṣṇa, am I not the daughter-in-law of both Bhīṣma and Dhṛtarāṣṭra? By righteousness I became their daughter-in-law, yet I have been made a slave-woman by force. (3-13-57)
गर्हये पाण्डवांस्त्वेव युधि श्रेष्ठान्महाबलान्। ये क्लिश्यमानां प्रेक्षन्ते धर्मपत्नीं यशस्विनीम् ॥३-१३-५८॥
garhaye pāṇḍavāṃstveva yudhi śreṣṭhān mahābalān। ye kliśyamānāṃ prekṣante dharmapatnīṃ yaśasvinīm ॥3-13-58॥
[गर्हये (garhaye) - I censure; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; त्व् (tv) - indeed; एव (eva) - only; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; श्रेष्ठान् (śreṣṭhān) - the best; महाबलान् (mahābalān) - of great strength; ये (ye) - who; क्लिश्यमानां (kliśyamānām) - being tormented; प्रेक्षन्ते (prekṣante) - look upon; धर्मपत्नीम् (dharmapatnīm) - the lawful wife; यशस्विनीम् (yaśasvinīm) - the illustrious one;]
(I censure the Pāṇḍavas indeed only, the best in battle, of great strength, who look upon their lawful wife, the illustrious one, being tormented.)
I censure the Pāṇḍavas themselves, the foremost and mighty in battle, who merely watch as their illustrious lawful wife is tormented. (3-13-58)
धिग्बलं भीमसेनस्य धिक्पार्थस्य धनुष्मताम्। यौ मां विप्रकृतां क्षुद्रैर्मर्षयेतां जनार्दन ॥३-१३-५९॥
dhigbalaṃ bhīmasenasya dhikpārthasya dhanuṣmatām। yau māṃ viprakṛtāṃ kṣudrairmarṣayetāṃ janārdana ॥3-13-59॥

(Condemnation to the strength of Bhīmasena, condemnation to Pārtha among bowmen; who, O Janārdana, would tolerate me, offended by the petty ones.)
Shame on the strength of Bhīmasena, shame on Pārtha among the bowmen; O Janārdana, that both of them would tolerate me being insulted by petty men. (3-13-59)
शाश्वतोऽयं धर्मपथः सद्भिराचरितः सदा। यद्भार्यां परिरक्षन्ति भर्तारोऽल्पबला अपि ॥३-१३-६०॥
śāśvato'yaṃ dharmapathaḥ sadbhir ācaritaḥ sadā। yad bhāryāṃ parirakṣanti bhartāro'lpabalā api ॥3-13-60॥
[शाश्वतः (śāśvataḥ) - eternal; अयम् (ayam) - this; धर्मपथः (dharmapathaḥ) - path of dharma; सद्भिः (sadbhih) - by the good; आचरितः (ācaritaḥ) - practiced; सदा (sadā) - always; यत् (yat) - which; भार्यां (bhāryām) - wife; परिरक्षन्ति (parirakṣanti) - protect; भर्तारः (bhartāraḥ) - husbands; अल्पबला (alpabalā) - of little strength; अपि (api) - even;]
(Eternal this path of dharma by the good practiced always; which wife protect husbands of little strength even.)
This path of dharma is eternal, always practiced by the good; even husbands of little strength protect their wives by it. (3-13-60)
भार्यायां रक्ष्यमाणायां प्रजा भवति रक्षिता। प्रजायां रक्ष्यमाणायामात्मा भवति रक्षितः ॥३-१३-६१॥
bhāryāyāṃ rakṣyamāṇāyāṃ prajā bhavati rakṣitā। prajāyāṃ rakṣyamāṇāyāmātmā bhavati rakṣitaḥ ॥3-13-61॥
[भार्यायाम् (bhāryāyām) - in the wife; रक्ष्यमाणायाम् (rakṣyamāṇāyām) - being protected; प्रजा (prajā) - offspring; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; रक्षिता (rakṣitā) - protected; प्रजायाम् (prajāyām) - in the offspring; रक्ष्यमाणायाम् (rakṣyamāṇāyām) - being protected; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; रक्षितः (rakṣitaḥ) - protected;]
(In the wife being protected, offspring becomes protected. In the offspring being protected, the self becomes protected.)
When the wife is protected, the offspring is protected. When the offspring is protected, the self is protected. (3-13-61)
आत्मा हि जायते तस्यां तस्माज्जाया भवत्युत। भर्ता च भार्यया रक्ष्यः कथं जायान्ममोदरे ॥३-१३-६२॥
ātmā hi jāyate tasyāṃ tasmājjāyā bhavatyuta। bhartā ca bhāryayā rakṣyaḥ kathaṃ jāyān mamodare ॥3-13-62॥
[आत्मा (ātmā) - self; हि (hi) - indeed; जायते (jāyate) - is born; तस्यां (tasyāṃ) - in her; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; जाया (jāyā) - wife; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; उत (uta) - also; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; च (ca) - and; भार्यया (bhāryayā) - by wife; रक्ष्यः (rakṣyaḥ) - to be protected; कथम् (katham) - how; जायात् (jāyāt) - from wife; मम (mama) - my; उदरे (udare) - in womb;]
(Self indeed is born in her; from that, wife also becomes. Husband and by wife to be protected; how from wife in my womb.)
The self is indeed born in her; from that, a wife also comes into being. The husband is to be protected by the wife; how could a husband be born from my womb? (3-13-62)
नन्विमे शरणं प्राप्तान्न त्यजन्ति कदाचन। ते मां शरणमापन्नां नान्वपद्यन्त पाण्डवाः ॥३-१३-६३॥
nanv ime śaraṇaṃ prāptān na tyajanti kadācana। te māṃ śaraṇam āpannāṃ na anvapadyanta pāṇḍavāḥ ॥3-13-63॥
[नु (nu) - indeed; इमे (ime) - these; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; प्राप्तान् (prāptān) - those who have attained; न (na) - not; त्यजन्ति (tyajanti) - they abandon; कदाचन (kadācana) - ever; ते (te) - they; माम् (mām) - me; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; आपन्नाम् (āpannām) - one who has attained; न (na) - not; अन्वपद्यन्त (anvapadyanta) - they followed; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas;]
(Indeed, these do not ever abandon those who have attained refuge; they, the Pāṇḍavas, did not follow me, who had attained refuge.)
Indeed, these never abandon those who have sought refuge; the Pāṇḍavas did not follow me, even though I had sought their refuge. (3-13-63)
पञ्चेमे पञ्चभिर्जाताः कुमाराश्चामितौजसः। एतेषामप्यवेक्षार्थं त्रातव्यास्मि जनार्दन ॥३-१३-६४॥
pañceme pañcabhirjātāḥ kumāraścāmitaujasaḥ। eteṣāmapyavekṣārthaṃ trātavyāsmi janārdana ॥3-13-64॥
[पञ्च (pañca) - five; इमे (ime) - these; पञ्चभिः (pañcabhiḥ) - by five; जाताः (jātāḥ) - born; कुमाराः (kumārāḥ) - princes; च (ca) - and; अमितौजसः (amitaujasaḥ) - of immeasurable energy; एतेषाम् (eteṣām) - of these; अपि (api) - also; अवेक्षार्थम् (avekṣārtham) - for the sake of protection; त्रातव्य (trātavya) - to be protected; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana;]
(Five these by five born princes and of immeasurable energy; of these also for the sake of protection to be protected I am, O Janardana;)
These five princes, born of the five, are of immeasurable energy; I too must be protected for the sake of these, O Janardana. (3-13-64)
प्रतिविन्ध्यो युधिष्ठिरात्सुतसोमो वृकोदरात्। अर्जुनाच्छ्रुतकीर्तिस्तु शतानीकस्तु नाकुलिः ॥३-१३-६५॥
prativindhyo yudhiṣṭhirātsutasomo vṛkodarāt। arjunācchrutakīrtistu śatānīkastu nākuliḥ ॥3-13-65॥
[प्रतिविन्ध्यः (prativindhyaḥ) - Prativindhya; (a name;) युधिष्ठिरात् (yudhiṣṭhirāt) - from Yudhiṣṭhira; सुतसोमः (sutasomaḥ) - Sutasoma; (a name;) वृकोदरात् (vṛkodarāt) - from Vṛkodara; अर्जुनात् (arjunāt) - from Arjuna; श्रुतकीर्तिः (śrutakīrtiḥ) - Śrutakīrti; (a name;) तु (tu) - but; शतानीकः (śatānīkaḥ) - Śatānīka; (a name;) तु (tu) - but; नाकुलिः (nākuliḥ) - son of Nakula;]
(Prativindhya from Yudhiṣṭhira; Sutasoma from Vṛkodara; Śrutakīrti from Arjuna; but Śatānīka but the son of Nakula.)
Prativindhya was the son of Yudhiṣṭhira; Sutasoma was the son of Bhīma; Śrutakīrti was the son of Arjuna; and Śatānīka was the son of Nakula. (3-13-65)
कनिष्ठाच्छ्रुतकर्मा तु सर्वे सत्यपराक्रमाः। प्रद्युम्नो यादृशः कृष्ण तादृशास्ते महारथाः ॥३-१३-६६॥
kaniṣṭhācchrutakarmā tu sarve satyaparākramāḥ। pradyumno yādṛśaḥ kṛṣṇa tādṛśāste mahārathāḥ ॥3-13-66॥
[कनिष्ठात् (kaniṣṭhāt) - from the youngest; श्रुतकर्मा (śrutakarmā) - one whose acts are heard (of); तु (tu) - but; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सत्यपराक्रमाः (satyaparākramāḥ) - truly valiant; प्रद्युम्नः (pradyumnaḥ) - Pradyumna; यादृशः (yādṛśaḥ) - as such; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Krishna; तादृशाः (tādṛśāḥ) - such as; ते (te) - they; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great chariot-warriors;]
(From the youngest, one whose acts are heard, but all truly valiant; Pradyumna as such, O Krishna, such as they, great chariot-warriors.)
From the youngest, whose deeds are renowned, all are truly valiant; O Krishna, just as Pradyumna is, so are all those great chariot-warriors. (3-13-66)
नन्विमे धनुषि श्रेष्ठा अजेया युधि शात्रवैः। किमर्थं धार्तराष्ट्राणां सहन्ते दुर्बलीयसाम् ॥३-१३-६७॥
nanv ime dhanuṣi śreṣṭhā ajeyā yudhi śātravaiḥ। kimarthaṃ dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṃ sahante durbalīyasām ॥3-13-67॥
[ननु (nanu) - indeed; इमे (ime) - these; धनुषि (dhanuṣi) - in bow; श्रेष्ठाः (śreṣṭhāḥ) - best; अजेयाः (ajeyāḥ) - unconquerable; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; शात्रवैः (śātravaiḥ) - by enemies; किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what reason; धार्तराष्ट्राणाम् (dhārtarāṣṭrāṇām) - of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; सहन्ते (sahante) - endure; दुर्बलीयसाम् (durbalīyasām) - of the weaker;]
(Indeed, these (warriors) are best in bow, unconquerable in battle by enemies; for what reason do they endure the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, who are weaker?)
Indeed, these warriors are the best archers, unconquerable in battle by their enemies; so why do they tolerate the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, who are weaker? (3-13-67)
अधर्मेण हृतं राज्यं सर्वे दासाः कृतास्तथा। सभायां परिकृष्टाहमेकवस्त्रा रजस्वला ॥३-१३-६८॥
adharmeṇa hṛtaṃ rājyaṃ sarve dāsāḥ kṛtāstathā। sabhāyāṃ parikṛṣṭāham-ekavastrā rajasvalā ॥3-13-68॥
[अधर्मेण (adharmeṇa) - by unrighteousness; हृतं (hṛtam) - taken away; राज्यं (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; सर्वे (sarve) - all; दासाः (dāsāḥ) - servants; कृताः (kṛtāḥ) - made; तथा (tathā) - thus; सभायां (sabhāyāṃ) - in the assembly; परिकृष्टा (parikṛṣṭā) - dragged; अहम् (aham) - I; एकवस्त्रा (ekavastrā) - with one garment; रजस्वला (rajasvalā) - menstruating;]
(By unrighteousness the kingdom was taken away; all were made servants thus; in the assembly I, dragged, with one garment, menstruating.)

नाधिज्यमपि यच्छक्यं कर्तुमन्येन गाण्डिवम्। अन्यत्रार्जुनभीमाभ्यां त्वया वा मधुसूदन ॥३-१३-६९॥
nādhijyam api yat śakyaṃ kartum anyena gāṇḍivam। anyatrārjunabhīmābhyāṃ tvayā vā madhusūdana ॥3-13-69॥

(Not even strung, which is possible to do by another, Gandiva; except by Arjuna and Bhima, by you or O Madhusudana.)
O Madhusudana, Gandiva cannot even be strung by anyone other than Arjuna, Bhima, or you. (3-13-69)
धिग्भीमसेनस्य बलं धिक्पार्थस्य च गाण्डिवम्। यत्र दुर्योधनः कृष्ण मुहूर्तमपि जीवति ॥३-१३-७०॥
dhigbhīmasenasya balaṃ dhikpārthasya ca gāṇḍivam। yatra duryodhanaḥ kṛṣṇa muhūrtam api jīvati ॥3-13-70॥

Disgrace to Bhīmasena's strength and to Pārtha's Gāṇḍiva, when Duryodhana is still alive even for a moment, O Kṛṣṇa. (3-13-70)
य एतानाक्षिपद्राष्ट्रात्सह मात्राविहिंसकान्। अधीयानान्पुरा बालान्व्रतस्थान्मधुसूदन ॥३-१३-७१॥
ya etān ākṣipad rāṣṭrāt saha mātrā-vihiṃsakān | adhīyānān purā bālān vrata-sthān madhusūdana ॥3-13-71॥
[य (ya) - who; एतान् (etān) - these; आक्षिपत् (ākṣipat) - expelled; राष्ट्रात् (rāṣṭrāt) - from the kingdom; सह (saha) - together with; मात्रा-विहिंसकान् (mātrā-vihiṃsakān) - mother-harming; अधीयानान् (adhīyānān) - studying; पुरा (purā) - formerly; बालान् (bālān) - boys; व्रत-स्थान् (vrata-sthān) - engaged in vows; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O Madhusudana;]
(Who expelled these, together with the mother-harming, from the kingdom—those boys formerly studying, engaged in vows, O Madhusudana.)
O Madhusudana, who expelled these boys, who were formerly studying and engaged in vows, together with those who harmed their mother, from the kingdom? (3-13-71)
भोजने भीमसेनस्य पापः प्राक्षेपयद्विषम्। कालकूटं नवं तीक्ष्णं सम्भृतं लोमहर्षणम् ॥३-१३-७२॥
bhojane bhīmasenasya pāpaḥ prākṣepayad viṣam। kālakūṭaṃ navaṃ tīkṣṇaṃ sambhṛtaṃ lomaharṣaṇam ॥3-13-72॥
[भोजने (bhojane) - in the food; भीमसेनस्य (bhīmasenasya) - of Bhīmasena; पापः (pāpaḥ) - the wicked one; प्राक्षेपयत् (prākṣepayat) - threw; विषम् (viṣam) - poison; कालकूटम् (kālakūṭam) - Kālakūṭa (deadly poison); नवम् (navam) - fresh; तीक्ष्णम् (tīkṣṇam) - sharp; सम्भृतम् (sambhṛtam) - collected; लोमहर्षणम् (lomaharṣaṇam) - hair-raising;]
(In the food of Bhīmasena, the wicked one threw poison, Kālakūṭa, fresh, sharp, collected, hair-raising.)
The wicked person put freshly gathered, sharp and terrifying Kālakūṭa poison into Bhīmasena's food. (3-13-72)
तज्जीर्णमविकारेण सहान्नेन जनार्दन। सशेषत्वान्महाबाहो भीमस्य पुरुषोत्तम ॥३-१३-७३॥
tajjīrṇam avikāreṇa sahānnena janārdana। saśeṣatvān mahābāho bhīmasya puruṣottama ॥3-13-73॥
[तत् (tat) - that; जीर्णम् (jīrṇam) - digested; अविकारेण (avikāreṇa) - without change; सह (saha) - with; अन्नेन (annena) - food; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana; सशेषत्वात् (saśeṣatvāt) - due to remaining portion; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; भीमस्य (bhīmasya) - of Bhima; पुरुषोत्तम (puruṣottama) - O best of men;]
(That digested without change with food, O Janardana. Due to remaining portion, O mighty-armed, of Bhima, O best of men.)
O Janardana, that food was digested without change. Because of the remaining portion of Bhima's food, O mighty-armed, O best of men. (3-13-73)
प्रमाणकोट्यां विश्वस्तं तथा सुप्तं वृकोदरम्। बद्ध्वैनं कृष्ण गङ्गायां प्रक्षिप्य पुनराव्रजत् ॥३-१३-७४॥
pramāṇakoṭyāṃ viśvastaṃ tathā suptaṃ vṛkodaram। baddhvainaṃ kṛṣṇa gaṅgāyāṃ prakṣipya punarāvrajat ॥3-13-74॥
[प्रमाणकोट्यां (pramāṇakoṭyām) - in a measuring basket; विश्वस्तं (viśvastam) - trusting; तथा (tathā) - thus; सुप्तं (suptam) - asleep; वृकोदरम् (vṛkodaram) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma); बद्ध्वा (baddhvā) - having bound; एनम् (enam) - him; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; गङ्गायां (gaṅgāyām) - in the Gaṅgā; प्रक्षिप्य (prakṣipya) - having thrown; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; आव्रजत् (āvrajat) - returned;]
(In a measuring basket, trusting, thus asleep, Vṛkodara; having bound him, Kṛṣṇa, in the Gaṅgā, having thrown, again returned.)
Kṛṣṇa, having bound the trusting and sleeping Vṛkodara in a measuring basket, threw him into the Gaṅgā and then returned again. (3-13-74)
यदा विबुद्धः कौन्तेयस्तदा सञ्छिद्य बन्धनम्। उदतिष्ठन्महाबाहुर्भीमसेनो महाबलः ॥३-१३-७५॥
yadā vibuddhaḥ kaunteyastadā sañchidya bandhanam। udatiṣṭhanmahābāhurbhīmaseno mahābalaḥ ॥3-13-75॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; विबुद्धः (vibuddhaḥ) - awakened; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; तदा (tadā) - then; सञ्छिद्य (sañchidya) - having cut asunder; बन्धनम् (bandhanam) - bond; उदतिष्ठन् (udatiṣṭhan) - rose up; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhimasena; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength;]
(When awakened, the son of Kunti then, having cut asunder the bond, the mighty-armed, Bhimasena of great strength rose up.)
When the son of Kunti awoke, he broke his bonds, and the mighty-armed, powerful Bhimasena rose up. (3-13-75)
आशीविषैः कृष्णसर्पैः सुप्तं चैनमदंशयत्। सर्वेष्वेवाङ्गदेशेषु न ममार च शत्रुहा ॥३-१३-७६॥
āśī-viṣaiḥ kṛṣṇa-sarpaiḥ suptaṃ ca enam adaṃśayat। sarveṣv eva aṅga-deśeṣu na mamāra ca śatru-hā ॥3-13-76॥
[आशीविषैः (āśī-viṣaiḥ) - by venomous snakes; कृष्णसर्पैः (kṛṣṇa-sarpaiḥ) - by black serpents; सुप्तं (suptam) - sleeping; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; अदंशयत् (adaṃśayat) - bit; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; एव (eva) - indeed; अङ्गदेशेषु (aṅga-deśeṣu) - in the limbs; न (na) - not; ममार (mamāra) - died; च (ca) - and; शत्रुहा (śatru-hā) - the destroyer of enemies;]
(By venomous snakes, by black serpents, the sleeping (one) and him bit; in all indeed limbs not died and the destroyer of enemies.)
Venomous black serpents bit him while he was sleeping, but the destroyer of enemies did not die, even though he was bitten on every limb. (3-13-76)
प्रतिबुद्धस्तु कौन्तेयः सर्वान्सर्पानपोथयत्। सारथिं चास्य दयितमपहस्तेन जघ्निवान् ॥३-१३-७७॥
pratibuddhastu kaunteyaḥ sarvānsarpānapothayat। sārathiṃ cāsya dayitamapahastena jaghnivān ॥3-13-77॥

(Awakened but the son of Kunti all serpents struck down. The charioteer and his beloved with the hand removed killed.)
But when awakened, the son of Kunti struck down all the serpents and killed the charioteer, his beloved, with a severed hand. (3-13-77)
पुनः सुप्तानुपाधाक्षीद्बालकान्वारणावते। शयानानार्यया सार्धं को नु तत्कर्तुमर्हति ॥३-१३-७८॥

(Again, he watched over the sleeping children in Varanavata, lying down together with the noble lady; who indeed is worthy to do that?)

यत्रार्या रुदती भीता पाण्डवानिदमब्रवीत्। महद्व्यसनमापन्ना शिखिना परिवारिता ॥३-१३-७९॥
yatrāryā rudatī bhītā pāṇḍavān idam abravīt। mahad-vyasanam āpannā śikhinā parivāritā ॥3-13-79॥

(Where the noble lady, weeping, afraid, to the Pāṇḍavas this said. Great calamity afflicted, by the fire surrounded.)
At that place, the noble lady, weeping and afraid, said this to the Pāṇḍavas: Afflicted by a great calamity, she was surrounded by fire. (3-13-79)
हा हतास्मि कुतो न्वद्य भवेच्छान्तिरिहानलात्। अनाथा विनशिष्यामि बालकैः पुत्रकैः सह ॥३-१३-८०॥
hā hatāsmi kuto nv-adya bhavet śāntir ihānalāt। anāthā vinaśiṣyāmi bālakaiḥ putrakaiḥ saha ॥3-13-80॥

(Alas; I am destroyed; from where indeed today may be peace here from fire; without protector; I shall perish; with children; with sons; together with;)
Alas! I am ruined. From where indeed today can there be peace here from this fire? Without a protector, I shall perish together with my children and sons. (3-13-80)
तत्र भीमो महाबाहुर्वायुवेगपराक्रमः। आर्यामाश्वासयामास भ्रातॄंश्चापि वृकोदरः ॥३-१३-८१॥
tatra bhīmo mahābāhur vāyuvegaparākramaḥ। āryām āśvāsayām āsa bhrātṝṁś cāpi vṛkodaraḥ॥3-13-81॥

(There Bhīma, mighty-armed, having the prowess and speed of wind, comforted the noble lady and also the brothers, Vṛkodara did.)
There, Bhīma, the mighty-armed one with the speed and prowess of the wind, comforted the noble lady and his brothers; thus did Vṛkodara. (3-13-81)
वैनतेयो यथा पक्षी गरुडः पततां वरः। तथैवाभिपतिष्यामि भयं वो नेह विद्यते ॥३-१३-८२॥
vainateyo yathā pakṣī garuḍaḥ patatāṃ varaḥ। tathaivābhipatiṣyāmi bhayaṃ vo neha vidyate ॥3-13-82॥
[वैनतेयः (vainateyaḥ) - son of Vinatā; यथा (yathā) - just as; पक्षी (pakṣī) - bird; गरुडः (garuḍaḥ) - Garuda; पतताम् (patatām) - of those who fly; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; अभिपतिष्यामि (abhipatiṣyāmi) - I shall attack; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; वः (vaḥ) - for you; न (na) - not; इह (iha) - here; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists;]
(The son of Vinatā, just as the bird Garuda, the best of those who fly, in the same way I shall attack; fear for you does not exist here.)
Just as Garuda, the son of Vinatā and the best among birds, so too will I swoop down; you have nothing to fear here. (3-13-82)
आर्यामङ्केन वामेन राजानं दक्षिणेन च। अंसयोश्च यमौ कृत्वा पृष्ठे बीभत्सुमेव च ॥३-१३-८३॥
āryāmaṅkena vāmena rājānaṃ dakṣiṇena ca। aṃsayoś ca yamau kṛtvā pṛṣṭhe bībhatsumeva ca ॥3-13-83॥
[आर्य (ārya) - noble; respected; अङ्केन (aṅkena) - by the lap; by the arm; वामेन (vāmena) - by the left; by the left (side); राजानं (rājānaṃ) - the king; दक्षिणेन (dakṣiṇena) - by the right; by the right (side); च (ca) - and; अंसयोः (aṃsayoḥ) - on the shoulders; of the two shoulders; च (ca) - and; यमौ (yamau) - the two Yamas; the twins; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having placed; having made; पृष्ठे (pṛṣṭhe) - on the back; बीभत्सुम् (bībhatsum) - Bībhatsu; (Arjuna); एव (eva) - indeed; only; च (ca) - and;]
(With the noble's arm, with the left (side), the king with the right (side) and; having placed the two Yamas on the shoulders and Bībhatsu indeed on the back and.)
With the noble's left arm and the king's right, having placed the two Yamas on the shoulders and Bībhatsu (Arjuna) on the back, (they carried him). (3-13-83)
सहसोत्पत्य वेगेन सर्वानादाय वीर्यवान्। भ्रातॄनार्यां च बलवान्मोक्षयामास पावकात् ॥३-१३-८४॥
sahasotpatya vegena sarvān ādāya vīryavān। bhrātṝn āryāṃ ca balavān mokṣayāmāsa pāvakāt ॥3-13-84॥
[सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; उत्पत्य (utpatya) - having arisen; वेगेन (vegena) - with speed; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all (of them); आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - the powerful one; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; आर्यां (āryām) - the noble lady; च (ca) - and; बलवान् (balavān) - the strong one; मोक्षयामास (mokṣayāmāsa) - caused to be released; पावकात् (pāvakāt) - from the fire;]
(Suddenly having arisen with speed, having taken all, the powerful one, the brothers, the noble lady and the strong one caused to be released from the fire.)
Suddenly, rising up with speed, the powerful one took all the brothers and the noble lady, and the strong one caused them to be released from the fire. (3-13-84)
ते रात्रौ प्रस्थिताः सर्वे मात्रा सह यशस्विनः। अभ्यगच्छन्महारण्यं हिडिम्बवनमन्तिकात् ॥३-१३-८५॥
te rātrau prasthitāḥ sarve mātrā saha yaśasvinaḥ। abhyagacchan mahāraṇyaṃ hiḍimbavanam antikāt ॥3-13-85॥
[ते (te) - they; रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; प्रस्थिताः (prasthitāḥ) - set out; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मात्रा (mātrā) - with mother; सह (saha) - together with; यशस्विनः (yaśasvinaḥ) - illustrious ones; अभ्यगच्छन् (abhyagacchan) - approached; महारण्यं (mahāraṇyam) - great forest; हिडिम्बवनम् (hiḍimbavanam) - Hiḍimba forest; अन्तिकात् (antikāt) - from near;]
(They at night set out all with mother together illustrious ones; approached great forest Hiḍimba forest from near;)
That night, all the illustrious ones set out together with their mother and approached the great forest near the Hiḍimba woods. (3-13-85)
श्रान्ताः प्रसुप्तास्तत्रेमे मात्रा सह सुदुःखिताः। सुप्तांश्चैनानभ्यगच्छद्धिडिम्बा नाम राक्षसी ॥३-१३-८६॥
śrāntāḥ prasuptās tatra ime mātrā saha suduḥkhitāḥ। suptāṃś ca enān abhyagacchad ḍiḍimbā nāma rākṣasī ॥3-13-86॥
[श्रान्ताः (śrāntāḥ) - tired; प्रसुप्ताः (prasuptāḥ) - fast asleep; तत्र (tatra) - there; इमे (ime) - these; मात्रा (mātrā) - with mother; सह (saha) - together; सुदुःखिताः (suduḥkhitāḥ) - very distressed; सुप्तान् (suptān) - those sleeping; च (ca) - and; एतान् (etān) - these; अभ्यगच्छत् (abhyagacchat) - approached; ढिडिम्बा (ḍiḍimbā) - Ḍiḍimbā; नाम (nāma) - named; राक्षसी (rākṣasī) - rākṣasī (female demon);]
(Tired, fast asleep, there these with mother together very distressed; those sleeping and these approached Ḍiḍimbā named rākṣasī (female demon).)
These, tired and fast asleep, were there with their mother, all greatly distressed. While they slept, the rākṣasī (female demon) named Ḍiḍimbā approached them. (3-13-86)
भीमस्य पादौ कृत्वा तु स्व उत्सङ्गे ततो बलात्। पर्यमर्दत संहृष्टा कल्याणी मृदुपाणिना ॥३-१३-८७॥
bhīmasya pādau kṛtvā tu sva utsaṅge tato balāt। paryamardata saṃhṛṣṭā kalyāṇī mṛdupāṇinā ॥3-13-87॥
[भीमस्य (bhīmasya) - of Bhīma; पादौ (pādau) - feet (dual); कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having placed; तु (tu) - but; स्व (sva) - her own; उत्सङ्गे (utsaṅge) - in the lap; ततः (tataḥ) - then; बलात् (balāt) - with force; पर्यमर्दत (paryamardata) - she pressed; संहृष्टा (saṃhṛṣṭā) - delighted; कल्याणी (kalyāṇī) - the auspicious lady; मृदुपाणिना (mṛdupāṇinā) - with soft hands;]
(Having placed Bhīma's feet but in her own lap, then with force, the delighted auspicious lady pressed (them) with soft hands.)
The auspicious lady, delighted, placed Bhīma's feet in her own lap and then pressed them forcefully with her soft hands. (3-13-87)
तामबुध्यदमेयात्मा बलवान्सत्यविक्रमः। पर्यपृच्छच्च तां भीमः किमिहेच्छस्यनिन्दिते ॥३-१३-८८॥
tām abudhyad ameyātmā balavān satyavikramaḥ। paryapṛcchac ca tāṃ bhīmaḥ kim iha icchasi anindite ॥3-13-88॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; अबुध्यत् (abudhyat) - understood; अमेयात्मा (ameyātmā) - of immeasurable self; बलवान् (balavān) - strong; सत्यविक्रमः (satyavikramaḥ) - of true valor; पर्यपृच्छत् (paryapṛcchat) - asked; च (ca) - and; ताम् (tām) - her; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; किम् (kim) - what; इह (iha) - here; इच्छसि (icchasi) - do you desire; अनिन्दिते (anindite) - O blameless one;]
(Her understood the immeasurable self, strong, of true valor; and asked her Bhima: What here do you desire, O blameless one?)
The strong and truly valiant Bhima, whose self is immeasurable, understood her and asked: "O blameless one, what do you desire here?" (3-13-88)
तयोः श्रुत्वा तु कथितमागच्छद्राक्षसाधमः। भीमरूपो महानादान्विसृजन्भीमदर्शनः ॥३-१३-८९॥
tayoḥ śrutvā tu kathitam āgacchat rākṣasa-adhamaḥ। bhīma-rūpaḥ mahā-nādān visṛjan bhīma-darśanaḥ ॥3-13-89॥
[तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तु (tu) - but; कथितम् (kathitam) - spoken; आगच्छत् (āgacchat) - came; राक्षसाधमः (rākṣasa-adhamaḥ) - the lowest among rākṣasas; भीमरूपः (bhīma-rūpaḥ) - terrible in form; महानादान् (mahā-nādān) - great sounds; विसृजन् (visṛjan) - emitting; भीमदर्शनः (bhīma-darśanaḥ) - terrible to behold;]
(Of those two, having heard what was spoken, but the lowest among rākṣasas came, terrible in form, emitting great sounds, terrible to behold.)
But having heard what was spoken by those two, the lowest among rākṣasas, terrible in form and appearance, emitting great roars, came there. (3-13-89)
केन सार्धं कथयसि आनयैनं ममान्तिकम्। हिडिम्बे भक्षयिष्यावो न चिरं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥३-१३-९०॥
kena sārdhaṃ kathayasi ānaya enaṃ mama antikam। hiḍimbe bhakṣayiṣyāvaḥ na ciraṃ kartum arhasi ॥3-13-90॥
[केन (kena) - with whom; सार्धं (sārdham) - together with; कथयसि (kathayasi) - you speak; आनय (ānaya) - bring; एनम् (enam) - him; मम (mama) - to me; अन्तिकम् (antikam) - near; हिडिम्बे (hiḍimbe) - O Hiḍimbā; भक्षयिष्यावः (bhakṣayiṣyāvaḥ) - we shall eat; न (na) - not; चिरम् (ciram) - long (time); कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(With whom together you speak? Bring him near to me. O Hiḍimbā, we shall eat (him); you ought not to delay to do (this).)
With whom are you speaking together? Bring him near me. O Hiḍimbā, we will eat him; you should not delay in doing this. (3-13-90)
सा कृपासङ्गृहीतेन हृदयेन मनस्विनी। नैनमैच्छत्तदाख्यातुमनुक्रोशादनिन्दिता ॥३-१३-९१॥
sā kṛpāsaṅgṛhītena hṛdayena manasvinī। nainam-aicchat-tad-ākhyātum-anukrośāt-aninditā ॥3-13-91॥
[सा (sā) - she; कृपा (kṛpā) - compassion; सङ्गृहीतेन (saṅgṛhītena) - embraced with; gathered with; हृदयेन (hṛdayena) - with heart; मनस्विनी (manasvinī) - high-minded; noble; न (na) - not; एनम् (enam) - him; ऐच्छत् (aicchat) - desired; तत् (tat) - that; आख्यातुम् (ākhyātum) - to tell; to declare; अनुक्रोशात् (anukrośāt) - out of compassion; अनिन्दिता (aninditā) - blameless;]
(She, noble, with a heart embraced by compassion, did not desire to tell him that, out of compassion, blameless.)
She, noble and blameless, whose heart was filled with compassion, did not wish to tell him that, out of pity. (3-13-91)
स नादान्विनदन्घोरान्राक्षसः पुरुषादकः। अभ्यद्रवत वेगेन भीमसेनं तदा किल ॥३-१३-९२॥
sa nādān vinadan ghorān rākṣasaḥ puruṣādakaḥ। abhyadravata vegena bhīmasenaṃ tadā kila॥3-13-92॥
[स (sa) - he; नादान् (nādān) - sounds; विनदन् (vinadan) - uttering; घोरान् (ghorān) - terrible; राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - rākṣasa; पुरुषादकः (puruṣādakaḥ) - man-eater; अभ्यद्रवत् (abhyadravat) - rushed toward; वेगेन (vegena) - with speed; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - Bhīmasena; तदा (tadā) - then; किल (kila) - indeed;]
(He, uttering terrible sounds, the rākṣasa, man-eater, rushed toward Bhīmasena with speed then indeed.)
At that time, the man-eating rākṣasa, making terrible sounds, rushed swiftly toward Bhīmasena. (3-13-92)
तमभिद्रुत्य सङ्क्रुद्धो वेगेन महता बली। अगृह्णात्पाणिना पाणिं भीमसेनस्य राक्षसः ॥३-१३-९३॥
tam abhidrutya saṅkruddho vegena mahatā balī। agṛhṇāt pāṇinā pāṇiṃ bhīmasenasya rākṣasaḥ ॥3-13-93॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अभिद्रुत्य (abhidrutya) - having rushed towards; सङ्क्रुद्धः (saṅkruddhaḥ) - very enraged; वेगेन (vegena) - with speed; महत् (mahatā) - great; बली (balī) - the strong one; अगृह्णात् (agṛhṇāt) - seized; पाणिना (pāṇinā) - with (his) hand; पाणिम् (pāṇim) - hand; भीमसेनस्य (bhīmasenasya) - of Bhīmasena; राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - the Rākṣasa;]
(Him having rushed towards, very enraged, with great speed, the strong one seized with (his) hand the hand of Bhīmasena, the Rākṣasa.)
The enraged and powerful Rākṣasa rushed at him with great speed and seized Bhīmasena's hand with his own. (3-13-93)
इन्द्राशनिसमस्पर्शं वज्रसंहननं दृढम्। संहत्य भीमसेनाय व्याक्षिपत्सहसा करम् ॥३-१३-९४॥
indrāśanisamasparśaṃ vajrasaṃhananaṃ dṛḍham। saṃhatya bhīmasenāya vyākṣipatsahasā karam ॥3-13-94॥
[इन्द्र (indra) - Indra; (the Vedic deity); अशनि (aśani) - thunderbolt; (lightning); सम (sama) - equal; like; स्पर्शं (sparśam) - touch; contact; वज्र (vajra) - diamond; thunderbolt; संहननं (saṃhananam) - compactness; firmness; दृढम् (dṛḍham) - firm; strong; संहत्य (saṃhatya) - having joined; having brought together; भीमसेनाय (bhīmasenāya) - to Bhimasena; (name of a hero); व्याक्षिपत् (vyākṣipat) - hurled; threw; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; swiftly; करम् (karam) - hand;]
(Indra thunderbolt equal touch, diamond compactness firm; having joined to Bhimasena hurled suddenly hand.)
He, whose touch was like Indra's thunderbolt, whose hand was as firm as a diamond, having joined his hand, suddenly hurled it at Bhimasena. (3-13-94)
गृहीतं पाणिना पाणिं भीमसेनोऽथ रक्षसा। नामृष्यत महाबाहुस्तत्राक्रुध्यद्वृकोदरः ॥३-१३-९५॥
gṛhītaṃ pāṇinā pāṇiṃ bhīmaseno'tha rakṣasā। nāmṛṣyata mahābāhustatrākrudhyad vṛkodaraḥ ॥3-13-95॥
[गृहीतं (gṛhītam) - seized; taken; accepted; पाणिना (pāṇinā) - by the hand; पाणिं (pāṇim) - hand; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhimasena; (name of a person); अथ (atha) - then; रक्षसा (rakṣasā) - by the rakshasa; by the demon; न (na) - not; अमृष्यत (amṛṣyata) - endured; tolerated; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; great-armed; तत्र (tatra) - there; अक्रुध्यत् (akrudhyat) - became angry; grew angry; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vrikodara; (another name for Bhima);]

Then, when his hand was seized by the rakshasa, Bhimasena, the mighty-armed Vrikodara, could not endure it and became angry there. (3-13-95)
तत्रासीत्तुमुलं युद्धं भीमसेनहिडिम्बयोः। सर्वास्त्रविदुषोर्घोरं वृत्रवासवयोरिव ॥३-१३-९६॥
tatrāsīttumulaṃ yuddhaṃ bhīmasenahiḍimbayoḥ। sarvāstraviduṣorghoraṃ vṛtravāsavayoriva ॥3-13-96॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; तुमुलं (tumulaṃ) - tumultuous; युद्धं (yuddhaṃ) - battle; भीमसेनहिडिम्बयोः (bhīmasenahiḍimbayoḥ) - of Bhīmasena and Hiḍimba; सर्वास्त्रविदुषोः (sarvāstraviduṣoḥ) - of those knowing all weapons; घोरं (ghoraṃ) - terrible; वृत्रवासवयोः (vṛtravāsavayoḥ) - of Vṛtra and Vāsava (Indra); इव (iva) - like;]
(There was a tumultuous battle there of Bhīmasena and Hiḍimba; of those knowing all weapons, a terrible (battle), like (that) of Vṛtra and Vāsava (Indra);)
There, a tumultuous battle took place between Bhīmasena and Hiḍimba; it was a terrible fight between two masters of all weapons, like the battle between Vṛtra and Indra. (3-13-96)
हत्वा हिडिम्बं भीमोऽथ प्रस्थितो भ्रातृभिः सह। हिडिम्बामग्रतः कृत्वा यस्यां जातो घटोत्कचः ॥३-१३-९७॥
hatvā hiḍimbaṃ bhīmo'tha prasthito bhrātṛbhiḥ saha। hiḍimbām agrataḥ kṛtvā yasyāṃ jāto ghaṭotkacaḥ ॥3-13-97॥

(Having slain Hiḍimba, Bhīma then departed together with his brothers, having placed Hiḍimbā in front, in whom Ghaṭotkaca was born. (3-13-97))

ततश्च प्राद्रवन्सर्वे सह मात्रा यशस्विनः। एकचक्रामभिमुखाः संवृता ब्राह्मणव्रजैः ॥३-१३-९८॥
tataś ca prādravan sarve saha mātrā yaśasvinaḥ। ekacakrām abhimukhāḥ saṁvṛtā brāhmaṇavrajaiḥ ॥3-13-98॥

(From then and ran away all with mother the illustrious ones to Ekacakra facing towards accompanied by groups of Brahmins.)
Then all the illustrious ones, along with their mother, ran away towards Ekacakra, accompanied by groups of Brahmins. (3-13-98)
प्रस्थाने व्यास एषां च मन्त्री प्रियहितोऽभवत्। ततोऽगच्छन्नेकचक्रां पाण्डवाः संशितव्रताः ॥३-१३-९९॥
prasthāne vyāsa eṣāṃ ca mantrī priyahito'bhavat। tato'gacchan-nekacakrāṃ pāṇḍavāḥ saṃśitavratāḥ ॥3-13-99॥
[प्रस्थाने (prasthāne) - at the departure; व्यास (vyāsa) - Vyāsa; एषां (eṣām) - of them; च (ca) - and; मन्त्री (mantrī) - counselor; प्रियहितः (priyahitaḥ) - one who acts for the dear benefit; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अगच्छन् (agacchan) - they went; एकचक्राम् (ekacakrām) - to Ekacakrā; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; संशितव्रताः (saṃśitavratāḥ) - firm in their vows;]
(At the departure, Vyāsa, the counselor of them and one who acts for the dear benefit, became; then the Pāṇḍavas, firm in their vows, went to Ekacakrā.)
At their departure, Vyāsa became their counselor and well-wisher; then the Pāṇḍavas, steadfast in their vows, went to Ekacakrā. (3-13-99)
तत्राप्यासादयामासुर्बकं नाम महाबलम्। पुरुषादं प्रतिभयं हिडिम्बेनैव संमितम् ॥३-१३-१००॥
tatrāpy āsādayām āsur bakaṃ nāma mahābalam। puruṣādaṃ pratibhayaṃ hiḍimbenai'va saṃmitam ॥3-13-100॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अपि (api) - also; आसादयाम् (āsādayām) - caused to approach; आसुः (āsuḥ) - they made; बकं (bakaṃ) - Baka; नाम (nāma) - named; महाबलम् (mahābalam) - of great strength; पुरुषादम् (puruṣādam) - man-eater; प्रतिभयम् (pratibhayam) - very fearful; हिडिम्बेन (hiḍimbenā) - by Hiḍimba; एव (eva) - indeed; संमितम् (saṃmitam) - equaled;]
(There also they caused Baka, named of great strength, a man-eater, very fearful, equaled indeed by Hiḍimba, to approach.)
There too, they brought near Baka, the mighty one by name, a man-eater and very fearful, who was considered equal to Hiḍimba. (3-13-100)
तं चापि विनिहत्योग्रं भीमः प्रहरतां वरः। सहितो भ्रातृभिः सर्वैर्द्रुपदस्य पुरं ययौ ॥३-१३-१०१॥
taṃ cāpi vinihatyograṃ bhīmaḥ praharatāṃ varaḥ। sahito bhrātṛbhiḥ sarvair drupadasya puraṃ yayau ॥3-13-101॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; विनिहत्य (vinihatya) - having slain; उग्रं (ugram) - fierce; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; प्रहरतां (praharatām) - of the strikers; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - by brothers; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - all; द्रुपदस्य (drupadasya) - of Drupada; पुरं (puraṃ) - city; ययौ (yayau) - went;]
(Him and also having slain the fierce, Bhima, best of strikers, accompanied by all brothers, to Drupada's city went.)
And having slain that fierce one, Bhima, the best among strikers, together with all his brothers, went to the city of Drupada. (3-13-101)
लब्धाहमपि तत्रैव वसता सव्यसाचिना। यथा त्वया जिता कृष्ण रुक्मिणी भीष्मकात्मजा ॥३-१३-१०२॥
labdhāham api tatraiva vasatā savyasācinā। yathā tvayā jitā kṛṣṇa rukmiṇī bhīṣmakātmajā ॥3-13-102॥
[लब्धा (labdhā) - obtained; attained; अहम् (aham) - I; अपि (api) - also; even; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - right there; in that very place; वसता (vasatā) - by dwelling; by residing; सव्यसाचिना (savyasācinā) - by Savyasācin (Arjuna); यथा (yathā) - just as; as; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; जिता (jitā) - conquered; won; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Kṛṣṇa; रुक्मिणी (rukmiṇī) - Rukmiṇī; भीष्मकात्मजा (bhīṣmakātmajā) - daughter of Bhīṣmaka;]
(Obtained I also right there by dwelling by Savyasācin; just as by you conquered O Kṛṣṇa Rukmiṇī, daughter of Bhīṣmaka.)
I too was obtained right there by Savyasācin (Arjuna) while he was residing, just as you, O Kṛṣṇa, won Rukmiṇī, the daughter of Bhīṣmaka. (3-13-102)
एवं सुयुद्धे पार्थेन जिताहं मधुसूदन। स्वयंवरे महत्कर्म कृत्वा नसुकरं परैः ॥३-१३-१०३॥
evaṃ suyuddhe pārthena jitāhaṃ madhusūdana। svayaṃvare mahatkarma kṛtvā nasukaraṃ paraiḥ ॥3-13-103॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सुयुद्धे (suyuddhe) - in good battle; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Pārtha; जिताऽहम् (jitāham) - conquered I am; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O Madhusūdana; स्वयंवरे (svayaṃvare) - in the svayaṃvara; महत्-कर्म (mahat-karma) - great deed; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; न (na) - not; सुकर्म (sukaraṃ) - easy to do; परैः (paraiḥ) - by others;]
(Thus, in good battle, by Pārtha, conquered I am, O Madhusūdana; in the svayaṃvara, a great deed having done, not easy to do by others. (3-13-103))
Thus, O Madhusūdana, I was conquered by Pārtha in a good battle; in the svayaṃvara, he performed a great deed that was not easy for others to accomplish. (3-13-103)
एवं क्लेशैः सुबहुभिः क्लिश्यमानाः सुदुःखिताः। निवसामार्यया हीनाः कृष्ण धौम्यपुरःसराः ॥३-१३-१०४॥
evaṃ kleśaiḥ subahubhiḥ kliśyamānāḥ suduḥkhitāḥ। nivasāmāryayā hīnāḥ kṛṣṇa dhaumyapuraḥsarāḥ ॥3-13-104॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; क्लेशैः (kleśaiḥ) - by afflictions; सुबहुभिः (subahubhiḥ) - by very many; क्लिश्यमानाः (kliśyamānāḥ) - being tormented; सुदुःखिताः (suduḥkhitāḥ) - greatly distressed; निवसाम् (nivasām) - we dwell; आर्यया (āryayā) - with dignity; हीनाः (hīnāḥ) - deprived; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Kṛṣṇa; धौम्यपुरःसराः (dhaumyapuraḥsarāḥ) - led by Dhaumya;]
(Thus, by very many afflictions being tormented, greatly distressed, we dwell deprived of dignity, O Kṛṣṇa, led by Dhaumya.)
O Kṛṣṇa, thus, tormented by many afflictions and greatly distressed, we live deprived of dignity, led by Dhaumya. (3-13-104)
त इमे सिंहविक्रान्ता वीर्येणाभ्यधिकाः परैः। विहीनैः परिक्लिश्यन्तीं समुपेक्षन्त मां कथम् ॥३-१३-१०५॥
ta ime siṃhavikrāntā vīryeṇābhyadhikāḥ paraiḥ। vihīnaiḥ parikliśyantīṃ samupekṣanta māṃ katham ॥3-13-105॥

(They these lion-striding by strength superior to others, bereft, afflicted, neglect me, how?)
How do these, who are lion-striding and superior to others in strength, neglect me, who am afflicted and bereft? (3-13-105)
एतादृशानि दुःखानि सहन्ते दुर्बलीयसाम्। दीर्घकालं प्रदीप्तानि पापानां क्षुद्रकर्मणाम् ॥३-१३-१०६॥
etādṛśāni duḥkhāni sahante durbalīyasām। dīrghakālaṃ pradīptāni pāpānāṃ kṣudrakarmaṇām ॥3-13-106॥
[एतादृशानि (etādṛśāni) - such as these; दुःखानि (duḥkhāni) - sufferings; सहन्ते (sahante) - endure; दुर्बलीयसाम् (durbalīyasām) - of the weak; दीर्घकालं (dīrghakālam) - for a long time; प्रदीप्तानि (pradīptāni) - inflamed; पापानां (pāpānām) - of the sinful; क्षुद्रकर्मणाम् (kṣudrakarmaṇām) - of those with petty actions;]
(Such as these sufferings endure of the weak; for a long time inflamed of the sinful of those with petty actions.)
Such sufferings as these are endured by the weak; for a long time, they are inflamed for the sinful and those who perform petty deeds. (3-13-106)
कुले महति जातास्मि दिव्येन विधिना किल। पाण्डवानां प्रिया भार्या स्नुषा पाण्डोर्महात्मनः ॥३-१३-१०७॥
kule mahati jātāsmi divyena vidhinā kila। pāṇḍavānāṃ priyā bhāryā snuṣā pāṇḍor mahātmanaḥ ॥3-13-107॥
[कुले (kule) - in a family; महति (mahati) - great; जाता (jātā) - born; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; दिव्येन (divyena) - by divine; विधिना (vidhinā) - by ordinance; किल (kila) - indeed; पाण्डवानां (pāṇḍavānāṃ) - of the Pāṇḍavas; प्रिया (priyā) - beloved; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; स्नुषा (snuṣā) - daughter-in-law; पाण्डोः (pāṇḍoḥ) - of Pāṇḍu; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled;]
(In a great family born I am, by divine ordinance indeed; of the Pāṇḍavas beloved wife, daughter-in-law of Pāṇḍu the great-souled. (3-13-107))
I was born in a great family by divine ordinance, indeed; I am the beloved wife of the Pāṇḍavas and the daughter-in-law of the great-souled Pāṇḍu. (3-13-107)
कचग्रहमनुप्राप्ता सास्मि कृष्ण वरा सती। पञ्चानामिन्द्रकल्पानां प्रेक्षतां मधुसूदन ॥३-१३-१०८॥
kacagrhamanuprāptā sāsmi kṛṣṇa varā satī। pañcānām indrakalpānāṃ prekṣatāṃ madhusūdana ॥3-13-108॥
[कच (kaca) - Kacha; (proper name); ग्रह (graha) - house; abode; अनुप्राप्ता (anuprāptā) - having arrived at; having reached; सा (sā) - she; that woman; अस्मि (asmi) - am; (first person singular of 'to be'); कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; (vocative, O Kṛṣṇa); वरा (varā) - chosen; selected; bride; सती (satī) - chaste woman; virtuous woman; पञ्चानाम् (pañcānām) - of the five; इन्द्रकल्पानाम् (indrakalpānām) - equal to Indra; like Indra; प्रेक्षताम् (prekṣatām) - while watching; in the presence of; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - Madhusūdana; (epithet of Kṛṣṇa);]
(Having arrived at Kacha's house, I am, O Kṛṣṇa, the chosen chaste woman; in the presence of the five who are like Indra, O Madhusūdana.)
O Kṛṣṇa, having reached Kacha's house, I am the chosen and virtuous bride, in the presence of the five who are like Indra, O Madhusūdana. (3-13-108)
इत्युक्त्वा प्रारुदत्कृष्णा मुखं प्रच्छाद्य पाणिना। पद्मकोशप्रकाशेन मृदुना मृदुभाषिणी ॥३-१३-१०९॥
ity uktvā prārudat kṛṣṇā mukhaṃ pracchādya pāṇinā। padmakośa-prakāśena mṛdunā mṛdubhāṣiṇī ॥3-13-109॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; प्रारुदत् (prārudat) - began to weep; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); मुखं (mukhaṃ) - face; प्रच्छाद्य (pracchādya) - having covered; पाणिना (pāṇinā) - with (her) hand; पद्मकोशप्रकाशेन (padmakośa-prakāśena) - with the radiance of a lotus-bud; मृदुना (mṛdunā) - soft; मृदुभाषिणी (mṛdubhāṣiṇī) - soft-spoken (woman);]
(Thus having said, Kṛṣṇā began to weep, having covered (her) face with (her) hand, with the radiance of a lotus-bud, soft, soft-spoken.)
Having spoken thus, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), the soft-spoken one, covered her face with her soft hand, radiant like a lotus bud, and began to weep. (3-13-109)
स्तनावपतितौ पीनौ सुजातौ शुभलक्षणौ। अभ्यवर्षत पाञ्चाली दुःखजैरश्रुबिन्दुभिः ॥३-१३-११०॥
stanāvapatitau pīnau sujātau śubhalakṣaṇau। abhyavarṣata pāñcālī duḥkhajair aśrubindubhiḥ ॥3-13-110॥
[स्तनौ (stanau) - breasts; (dual); अपतितौ (apatitau) - fallen; (dual); पीनौ (pīnau) - full; (dual); सुजातौ (sujātau) - well-formed; (dual); शुभलक्षणौ (śubhalakṣaṇau) - auspicious-marked; (dual); अभ्यवर्षत (abhyavarṣata) - rained upon; (imperfect); पाञ्चाली (pāñcālī) - Panchali; (Draupadi); दुःखजैः (duḥkhajaiḥ) - born of sorrow; (instrumental plural); अश्रुबिन्दुभिः (aśrubindubhiḥ) - with tear-drops; (instrumental plural);]
(The full, well-formed, auspicious-marked breasts, fallen, Panchali rained upon with tear-drops born of sorrow.)
Panchali's full, well-formed, auspicious breasts, as they drooped, were showered with tear-drops born of her sorrow. (3-13-110)
चक्षुषी परिमार्जन्ती निःश्वसन्ती पुनः पुनः। बाष्पपूर्णेन कण्ठेन क्रुद्धा वचनमब्रवीत् ॥३-१३-१११॥
cakṣuṣī parimārjantī niḥśvasantī punaḥ punaḥ। bāṣpapūrṇena kaṇṭhena kruddhā vacanam abravīt ॥3-13-111॥
[चक्षुषी (cakṣuṣī) - with the eyes; परिमार्जन्ती (parimārjantī) - wiping; निःश्वसन्ती (niḥśvasantī) - sighing; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; बाष्पपूर्णेन (bāṣpapūrṇena) - with tear-filled; कण्ठेन (kaṇṭhena) - with throat; क्रुद्धा (kruddhā) - angry; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Wiping the eyes, sighing again and again, with a tear-filled throat, angry, she spoke speech.)
Wiping her eyes and sighing repeatedly, with her throat choked with tears and in anger, she spoke these words. (3-13-111)
नैव मे पतयः सन्ति न पुत्रा मधुसूदन। न भ्रातरो न च पिता नैव त्वं न च बान्धवाः ॥३-१३-११२॥
naiva me patayaḥ santi na putrā madhusūdana। na bhrātaro na ca pitā naiva tvaṃ na ca bāndhavāḥ ॥3-13-112॥
[नैव (na eva) - not indeed; मे (me) - of me; पतयः (patayaḥ) - husbands; सन्ति (santi) - are; न (na) - not; पुत्रा (putrā) - sons; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O Madhusūdana; न (na) - not; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पिता (pitā) - father; नैव (na eva) - not indeed; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; बान्धवाः (bāndhavāḥ) - relatives;]
(Not indeed of me husbands are, not sons, O Madhusūdana; not brothers, not and father, not indeed you, not and relatives.)
O Madhusūdana, I have neither husbands nor sons; nor brothers, nor father, nor even you, nor any relatives. (3-13-112)
ये मां विप्रकृतां क्षुद्रैरुपेक्षध्वं विशोकवत्। न हि मे शाम्यते दुःखं कर्णो यत्प्राहसत्तदा ॥३-१३-११३॥
ye māṃ viprakṛtāṃ kṣudrair upekṣadhvaṃ viśokavat। na hi me śāmyate duḥkhaṃ karṇo yat prāhasat tadā ॥3-13-113॥

(Who me wronged by the low you all disregard like one without sorrow. Not indeed my is pacified sorrow Karṇa that which laughed then.)
You who disregard me, wronged by the low, as if without sorrow—my grief is not pacified, for Karṇa laughed at that time. (3-13-113)
अथैनामब्रवीत्कृष्णस्तस्मिन्वीरसमागमे। रोदिष्यन्ति स्त्रियो ह्येवं येषां क्रुद्धासि भामिनि ॥३-१३-११४॥
athainām abravīt kṛṣṇas tasmin vīrasamāgame। rodiṣyanti striyo hy evaṃ yeṣāṃ kruddhāsi bhāmini ॥3-13-114॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एनाम् (enām) - to her; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; वीर (vīra) - hero; समागमे (samāgame) - assembly; रोदिष्यन्ति (rodiṣyanti) - will cry; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; हि (hi) - indeed; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; येषाम् (yeṣām) - whose; क्रुद्धासि (kruddhāsi) - you are angry; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O passionate one;]
(Then to her said Kṛṣṇa in that hero-assembly: Women indeed will cry thus, whose you are angry, O passionate one.)
Then Kṛṣṇa said to her in that assembly of heroes: "O passionate one, the women whose men you are angry with will surely weep in this way." (3-13-114)
बीभत्सुशरसञ्छन्नाञ्शोणितौघपरिप्लुतान्। निहताञ्जीवितं त्यक्त्वा शयानान्वसुधातले ॥३-१३-११५॥
bībhatsu-śara-sañchannān śoṇita-ogha-pariplutān। nihatān jīvitam tyaktvā śayānān vasudhā-tale ॥3-13-115॥
[बीभत्सु (bībhatsu) - Arjuna; (one of the names of Arjuna); शर (śara) - arrow; सञ्चन्नान् (sañchannān) - covered; शोणित (śoṇita) - blood; ओघ (ogha) - stream; परिप्लुतान् (pariplutān) - flooded; निहतान् (nihatān) - slain; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; शयानान् (śayānān) - lying; वसुधा (vasudhā) - earth; तले (tale) - on the surface;]
(Arjuna-arrow-covered, blood-stream-flooded, slain, life having abandoned, lying on the earth's surface.)
Those who were covered by Arjuna's arrows, flooded by streams of blood, slain and having abandoned life, lay on the surface of the earth. (3-13-115)
यत्समर्थं पाण्डवानां तत्करिष्यामि मा शुचः। सत्यं ते प्रतिजानामि राज्ञां राज्ञी भविष्यसि ॥३-१३-११६॥
yatsamarthaṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ tatkariṣyāmi mā śucaḥ। satyaṃ te pratijānāmi rājñāṃ rājñī bhaviṣyasi ॥3-13-116॥
[यत् (yat) - which; समर्थं (samarthaṃ) - possible; पाण्डवानां (pāṇḍavānāṃ) - of the Pāṇḍavas; तत् (tat) - that; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; मा (mā) - do not; शुचः (śucaḥ) - grieve; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; ते (te) - to you; प्रतिजानामि (pratijānāmi) - I promise; राज्ञां (rājñāṃ) - of kings; राज्ञी (rājñī) - queen; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will be;]
(Which is possible for the Pāṇḍavas, that I will do; do not grieve. Truth to you I promise; of kings, queen you will be. (3-13-116))
Whatever is possible for the Pāṇḍavas, that I will do; do not grieve. I promise you truly: you will be the queen among queens. (3-13-116)
पतेद्द्यौर्हिमवाञ्शीर्येत्पृथिवी शकलीभवेत्। शुष्येत्तोयनिधिः कृष्णे न मे मोघं वचो भवेत् ॥३-१३-११७॥
pateddyauḥ himavāñ śīryet pṛthivī śakalībhavet | śuṣyet toyanidhiḥ kṛṣṇe na me moghaṃ vaco bhavet ॥3-13-117॥
[पतेत् (patet) - may fall; द्यौः (dyauḥ) - sky; हिमवान् (himavān) - Himalaya; शीर्येत् (śīryet) - may be shattered; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; शकली (śakalī) - into pieces; भवेत् (bhavet) - may become; शुष्येत् (śuṣyet) - may dry up; तोयनिधिः (toyanidhiḥ) - ocean; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - O Kṛṣṇa; न (na) - not; मे (me) - my; मोग्हम् (mogham) - fruitless; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; भवेत् (bhavet) - may become;]
(May the sky fall, may the Himalaya be shattered, may the earth become pieces, may the ocean dry up; O Kṛṣṇa, may my speech not become fruitless.)
Let the sky fall, the Himalaya be shattered, the earth break into pieces, and the ocean dry up; O Kṛṣṇa, may my words not prove fruitless. (3-13-117)
धृष्टद्युम्न उवाच॥

Dhṛṣṭadyumna said.
अहं द्रोणं हनिष्यामि शिखण्डी तु पितामहम्। दुर्योधनं भीमसेनः कर्णं हन्ता धनञ्जयः ॥३-१३-११८॥
ahaṃ droṇaṃ haniṣyāmi śikhaṇḍī tu pitāmaham। duryodhanaṃ bhīmasenaḥ karṇaṃ hantā dhanañjayaḥ ॥3-13-118॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; द्रोणं (droṇam) - Droṇa (the teacher); हनिष्यामि (haniṣyāmi) - shall slay; शिखण्डी (śikhaṇḍī) - Śikhaṇḍī; तु (tu) - but; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - the grandsire; दुर्योधनं (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; कर्णं (karṇam) - Karna; हन्ता (hantā) - slayer; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna);]
(I Droṇa shall slay, Śikhaṇḍī but the grandsire. Duryodhana Bhīmasena, Karṇa slayer Dhanañjaya.)
I will slay Droṇa; Śikhaṇḍī, however, will slay the grandsire. Bhīmasena will kill Duryodhana, and Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) will be the slayer of Karṇa. (3-13-118)
रामकृष्णौ व्यपाश्रित्य अजेयाः स्म शुचिस्मिते। अपि वृत्रहणा युद्धे किं पुनर्धृतराष्ट्रजैः ॥३-१३-११९॥
rāmakṛṣṇau vyapāśritya ajeyāḥ sma śucismite। api vṛtrahaṇā yuddhe kiṃ punardhṛtarāṣṭrajaiḥ ॥3-13-119॥
[रामकृष्णौ (rāmakṛṣṇau) - Rāma and Kṛṣṇa; व्यपाश्रित्य (vyapāśritya) - having taken refuge in; अजेयाः (ajeyāḥ) - invincible; स्म (sma) - indeed; शुचिस्मिते (śucismite) - O pure-smiling one; अपि (api) - even; वृत्रहणा (vṛtrahaṇā) - the slayers of Vṛtra; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; किं (kiṃ) - what; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; धृतराष्ट्रजैः (dhṛtarāṣṭrajaiḥ) - by the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra;]
(Rāma and Kṛṣṇa having taken refuge, invincible indeed, O pure-smiling one; even the slayers of Vṛtra in battle, what again by the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra? (3-13-119))
O pure-smiling one, having taken refuge in Rāma and Kṛṣṇa, one is indeed invincible; even the slayers of Vṛtra in battle—what then of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra? (3-13-119)

इत्युक्तेऽभिमुखा वीरा वासुदेवमुपस्थिता। तेषां मध्ये महाबाहुः केशवो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥३-१३-१२०॥
ityukte'bhimukhā vīrā vāsudevam-upasthitā। teṣāṃ madhye mahābāhuḥ keśavo vākyam-abravīt ॥3-13-120॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्ते (ukte) - having been said; अभिमुखाः (abhimukhāḥ) - facing towards; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; वासुदेवम् (vāsudevam) - to Vāsudeva; उपस्थिता (upasthitā) - approached; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; केशवः (keśavaḥ) - Keśava; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Thus, when it was said, the heroes facing towards Vāsudeva approached; among them, the mighty-armed Keśava spoke speech.)
When this was said, the heroes turned towards Vāsudeva and approached him; among them, the mighty-armed Keśava spoke these words. (3-13-120)
