Pancharatra: Krishna narrates the reason for going after Shalva.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

Yudhiṣṭhira said.
असांनिध्यं कथं कृष्ण तवासीद्वृष्णिनन्दन। क्व चासीद्विप्रवासस्ते किं वाकार्षीः प्रवासकः ॥३-१५-१॥
asāṁnidhyaṁ kathaṁ kṛṣṇa tavāsīd vṛṣṇinandana। kva cāsīd vipravāsas te kiṁ vā akāṛṣīḥ pravāsakaḥ ॥3-15-1॥
[असांनिध्यं (asāṁnidhyam) - absence of nearness; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; तव (tava) - your; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; वृष्णिनन्दन (vṛṣṇinandana) - O delight of the Vṛṣṇis; क्व (kva) - where; च (ca) - and; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; विप्रवासः (vipravāsaḥ) - separation; ते (te) - your; किं (kiṁ) - what; वा (vā) - or; अकार्षीः (akārṣīḥ) - did you do; प्रवासकः (pravāsakaḥ) - as a traveler;]
(Absence of nearness how, Kṛṣṇa, your was, O delight of the Vṛṣṇis? Where and was separation your? What or did you do as a traveler? (3-15-1))
O Kṛṣṇa, O delight of the Vṛṣṇis, how did your absence occur? Where was your separation? Or what did you do as a traveler? (3-15-1)

Kṛṣṇa said.
शाल्वस्य नगरं सौभं गतोऽहं भरतर्षभ। विनिहन्तुं नरश्रेष्ठ तत्र मे शृणु कारणम् ॥३-१५-२॥
śālvasya nagaraṃ saubhaṃ gato'ham bharatarṣabha। vinihantuṃ naraśreṣṭha tatra me śṛṇu kāraṇam ॥3-15-2॥
[शाल्वस्य (śālvasya) - of Śālva; नगरं (nagaraṃ) - city; सौभं (saubhaṃ) - Saubha (name of the city); गतः (gataḥ) - gone; अहम् (aham) - I; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas; विनिहन्तुम् (vinihantum) - to destroy; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - best of men; तत्र (tatra) - there; मे (me) - my; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - reason;]
(Of Śālva, city Saubha gone I, bull among the Bharatas, to destroy, best of men, there my hear reason.)
O best of men, bull among the Bharatas, I went to the city Saubha of Śālva to destroy it; there, hear my reason. (3-15-2)
महातेजा महाबाहुर्यः स राजा महायशाः। दमघोषात्मजो वीरः शिशुपालो मया हतः ॥३-१५-३॥
mahātejā mahābāhur yaḥ sa rājā mahāyaśāḥ। damaghoṣātmajo vīraḥ śiśupālo mayā hataḥ ॥3-15-3॥
[महातेजा (mahātejā) - great-brilliance; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; यः (yaḥ) - who; सः (saḥ) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - great-fame; दमघोषात्मजः (damaghoṣātmajaḥ) - son-of-Damaghoṣa; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; शिशुपालः (śiśupālaḥ) - Śiśupāla; मया (mayā) - by-me; हतः (hataḥ) - slain;]
(Great-brilliance, mighty-armed, who, he, king, great-fame, son-of-Damaghoṣa, hero, Śiśupāla, by-me, slain.)
Śiśupāla, the heroic son of Damaghoṣa, who was a king of great fame, mighty arms, and great brilliance, has been slain by me. (3-15-3)
यज्ञे ते भरतश्रेष्ठ राजसूयेऽर्हणां प्रति। स रोषवशसम्प्राप्तो नामृष्यत दुरात्मवान् ॥३-१५-४॥
yajñe te bharataśreṣṭha rājasūye'rhaṇāṃ prati। sa roṣavaśasamprāpto nāmṛṣyata durātmavān ॥3-15-4॥
[यज्ञे (yajñe) - in the sacrifice; ते (te) - your; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; राजसूये (rājasūye) - in the Rājasūya (sacrifice); अर्हणां (arhaṇām) - of honors; प्रति (prati) - towards; स (sa) - he; रोषवशसम्प्राप्तः (roṣavaśasamprāptaḥ) - overcome by the power of anger; न (na) - not; अमृष्यत (amṛṣyata) - endured; दुरात्मवान् (durātmavān) - wicked-minded;]
(In the sacrifice, your, O best of the Bharatas, in the Rājasūya, of honors, towards, he, overcome by the power of anger, not, endured, wicked-minded.)
O best of the Bharatas, in your Rājasūya sacrifice, he, the wicked-minded one, overcome by the power of anger, could not endure the honors given to others. (3-15-4)
श्रुत्वा तं निहतं शाल्वस्तीव्ररोषसमन्वितः। उपायाद्द्वारकां शून्यामिहस्थे मयि भारत ॥३-१५-५॥
śrutvā taṃ nihataṃ śālvastīvraroṣasamanvitaḥ। upāyāddvārakāṃ śūnyāmihasthe mayi bhārata ॥3-15-5॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तं (taṃ) - him; निहतं (nihataṃ) - slain; शाल्व (śālva) - Śālva; तीव्र (tīvra) - intense; रोष (roṣa) - anger; समन्वितः (samanvitaḥ) - endowed with; उपायात् (upāyāt) - approached; द्वारकां (dvārakāṃ) - Dvārakā; शून्याम् (śūnyām) - empty; इहस्थे (ihasthe) - being here; मयि (mayi) - when I; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Having heard him slain, Śālva, endowed with intense anger, approached Dvārakā, empty, when I was here, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, having heard that Śālva was slain, filled with intense anger, he approached the empty city of Dvārakā while I was here.
स तत्र योधितो राजन्बालकैर्वृष्णिपुङ्गवैः। आगतः कामगं सौभमारुह्यैव नृशंसकृत् ॥३-१५-६॥
sa tatra yodhito rājan bālakaiḥ vṛṣṇipuṅgavaiḥ। āgataḥ kāmagaṃ saubham āruhyaiva nṛśaṃsakṛt ॥3-15-6॥
[स (sa) - he; तत्र (tatra) - there; योधितः (yodhitaḥ) - fought; राजन् (rājan) - O king; बालकैः (bālakaiḥ) - by boys; वृष्णिपुङ्गवैः (vṛṣṇipuṅgavaiḥ) - by the foremost of the Vṛṣṇis; आगतः (āgataḥ) - having come; कामगम् (kāmagaṃ) - moving at will; सौभम् (saubham) - the Saubha (airship); आरुह्य (āruhya) - having mounted; एव (eva) - indeed; नृशंसकृत् (nṛśaṃsakṛt) - having done cruelty;]
(He there fought, O king, by boys, by the foremost of the Vṛṣṇis; having come, the Saubha moving at will, having mounted indeed, having done cruelty.)
O king, he fought there with the boys and the foremost of the Vṛṣṇis; then, having come, he mounted the Saubha, which moved at will, and committed cruel deeds. (3-15-6)
ततो वृष्णिप्रवीरांस्तान्बालान्हत्वा बहूंस्तदा। पुरोद्यानानि सर्वाणि भेदयामास दुर्मतिः ॥३-१५-७॥
tato vṛṣṇipravīrāṃstān bālān hatvā bahūṃs tadā। purodyānāni sarvāṇi bhedayāmāsa durmatiḥ ॥3-15-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वृष्णि-प्रवीरान् (vṛṣṇi-pravīrān) - the mighty ones of the Vṛṣṇi clan; तान् (tān) - those; बालान् (bālān) - children; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; बहून् (bahūn) - many; तदा (tadā) - then; पुर-उद्यानानि (pura-udyānāni) - city gardens; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; भेदयामास (bhedayāmāsa) - caused to be broken; दुर्मतिः (durmatiḥ) - the evil-minded one;]
(Then, having killed those many children, the mighty ones of the Vṛṣṇi clan, at that time, the evil-minded one caused all the city gardens to be broken.)
Then, after killing those many children, the mighty Vṛṣṇis, at that time the evil-minded one destroyed all the city gardens. (3-15-7)
उक्तवांश्च महाबाहो क्वासौ वृष्णिकुलाधमः। वासुदेवः सुमन्दात्मा वसुदेवसुतो गतः ॥३-१५-८॥
uktavāṃś ca mahābāho kvāsau vṛṣṇikulādhamah। vāsudevaḥ sumandātmā vasudevasuto gataḥ ॥3-15-8॥
[उक्तवान् (uktavān) - having spoken; च (ca) - and; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; क्व (kva) - where; असौ (asau) - that; वृष्णिकुलाधमः (vṛṣṇikulādhamah) - the lowest of the Vṛṣṇi clan; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva; सुमन्दात्मा (sumandātmā) - very dull-minded; वसुदेवसुतः (vasudevasutaḥ) - son of Vasudeva; गतः (gataḥ) - has gone;]
(Having spoken, and O mighty-armed, where is that lowest of the Vṛṣṇi clan, Vāsudeva, very dull-minded, son of Vasudeva, has gone.)
Having spoken thus, O mighty-armed one, where has that lowest of the Vṛṣṇi clan, Vāsudeva, the very dull-minded son of Vasudeva, gone? (3-15-8)
तस्य युद्धार्थिनो दर्पं युद्धे नाशयितास्म्यहम्। आनर्ताः सत्यमाख्यात तत्र गन्तास्मि यत्र सः ॥३-१५-९॥
tasya yuddhārthino darpaṃ yuddhe nāśayitāsmyaḥam। ānartāḥ satyamākhyāta tatra gantāsmi yatra saḥ ॥3-15-9॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; युद्धार्थिनः (yuddhārthinaḥ) - desiring battle; दर्पम् (darpam) - pride; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; नाशयिता (nāśayitā) - destroyer; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; अहम् (aham) - I; आनर्ताः (ānartāḥ) - O Anartas; सत्यं (satyam) - truly; आख्यात (ākhyāta) - declare; तत्र (tatra) - there; गन्तास्मि (gantāsmi) - I will go; यत्र (yatra) - where; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Of him desiring battle, pride in battle destroyer I am I. O Anartas, truly declare, there I will go where he.)
I am the destroyer of the pride in battle of him who seeks war. O Anartas, declare this truly: I will go there where he is. (3-15-9)
तं हत्वा विनिवर्तिष्ये कंसकेशिनिषूदनम्। अहत्वा न निवर्तिष्ये सत्येनायुधमालभे ॥३-१५-१०॥
taṃ hatvā vinivartiṣye kaṃsakeśiniṣūdanam। ahatvā na nivartiṣye satyenāyudhamālabhe ॥3-15-10॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; विनिवर्तिष्ये (vinivartiṣye) - I shall return; कंसकेशिनिषूदनम् (kaṃsakeśiniṣūdanam) - Kamsa and Keshi destroyer; अहत्वा (ahatvā) - without slaying; न (na) - not; निवर्तिष्ये (nivartiṣye) - I shall return; सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; आयुधम् (āyudham) - weapon; आलभे (ālabhe) - I take up;]
(Him having slain I shall return, Kamsa and Keshi destroyer. Without slaying (him) not I shall return, by truth weapon I take up.)
Having slain him, I shall return, O destroyer of Kamsa and Keshi. Without slaying him, I shall not return; by truth, I take up my weapon. (3-15-10)
क्वासौ क्वासाविति पुनस्तत्र तत्र विधावति। मया किल रणे युद्धं काङ्क्षमाणः स सौभराट् ॥३-१५-११॥
kvāsau kvāsāviti punastatra tatra vidhāvati। mayā kila raṇe yuddhaṃ kāṅkṣamāṇaḥ sa saubharāṭ ॥3-15-11॥
[क्व (kva) - where; असौ (asau) - he; क्व (kva) - where; असौ (asau) - he; इति (iti) - thus; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तत्र (tatra) - there; तत्र (tatra) - there; विधावति (vidhāvati) - runs; मया (mayā) - by me; किल (kila) - indeed; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; युद्धम् (yuddham) - fight; काङ्क्षमाणः (kāṅkṣamāṇaḥ) - desiring; स (sa) - he; सौभराट् (saubharāṭ) - the king of the Saubhas;]
(Where is he, where is he, thus again here and there runs; by me indeed in battle fight desiring, he the king of the Saubhas.)
Saying, "Where is he, where is he?", he again runs here and there, desiring a fight with me in battle, that king of the Saubhas. (3-15-11)
अद्य तं पापकर्माणं क्षुद्रं विश्वासघातिनम्। शिशुपालवधामर्षाद्गमयिष्ये यमक्षयम् ॥३-१५-१२॥
adya taṃ pāpakarmāṇaṃ kṣudraṃ viśvāsaghātinam। śiśupālavadhaamarṣād gamayiṣye yamakṣayam ॥3-15-12॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; तं (taṃ) - him; पापकर्माणं (pāpakarmāṇam) - of evil deeds; क्षुद्रं (kṣudram) - base; विश्वासघातिनम् (viśvāsaghātinam) - betrayer of trust; शिशुपालवधामर्षात् (śiśupālavadhaamarṣāt) - from the anger at the killing of Śiśupāla; गमयिष्ये (gamayiṣye) - I will send; यमक्षयम् (yamakṣayam) - to Yama's abode;]
(Today him of evil deeds, base, betrayer of trust, from the anger at the killing of Śiśupāla, I will send to Yama's abode.)
Today, out of anger at the killing of Śiśupāla, I will send that base, evil-doing betrayer of trust to Yama's abode. (3-15-12)
मम पापस्वभावेन भ्राता येन निपातितः। शिशुपालो महीपालस्तं वधिष्ये महीतले ॥३-१५-१३॥
mama pāpasvabhāvena bhrātā yena nipātitaḥ। śiśupālo mahīpālastaṃ vadhiṣye mahītale ॥3-15-13॥
[मम (mama) - my; पापस्वभावेन (pāpasvabhāvena) - by evil-nature; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; येन (yena) - by whom; निपातितः (nipātitaḥ) - cast down; शिशुपालः (śiśupālaḥ) - Śiśupāla; महीपालः (mahīpālaḥ) - king; तम् (tam) - him; वधिष्ये (vadhiṣye) - I shall slay; महीतले (mahītale) - on the earth;]
(By my evil-nature, the brother by whom was cast down, Śiśupāla, the king, him I shall slay on the earth.)
Because of my evil nature, the brother who was cast down by Śiśupāla, the king, I shall slay him on the earth. (3-15-13)
भ्राता बालश्च राजा च न च सङ्ग्राममूर्धनि। प्रमत्तश्च हतो वीरस्तं हनिष्ये जनार्दनम् ॥३-१५-१४॥
bhrātā bālaś ca rājā ca na ca saṅgrāmamūrdhani। pramattaś ca hato vīras taṃ haniṣye janārdanam ॥3-15-14॥
[भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; बालः (bālaḥ) - child; च (ca) - and; राजा (rājā) - king; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; सङ्ग्राममूर्धनि (saṅgrāmamūrdhani) - in the forefront of battle; प्रमत्तः (pramattaḥ) - negligent; च (ca) - and; हतः (hataḥ) - killed; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; तम् (tam) - him; हनिष्ये (haniṣye) - I shall slay; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - Janardana (Krishna);]
(Brother, child and king and not and in the forefront of battle, negligent and killed hero, him I shall slay Janardana.)
Whether he is a brother, a child, or a king, and even if not in the forefront of battle, if he is a negligent and slain hero, I shall slay that Janardana. (3-15-14)
एवमादि महाराज विलप्य दिवमास्थितः। कामगेन स सौभेन क्षिप्त्वा मां कुरुनन्दन ॥३-१५-१५॥
evamādi mahārāja vilapya divamāsthitaḥ। kāmagena sa saubhena kṣiptvā māṃ kurunandana ॥3-15-15॥
[एवमादि (evamādi) - thus beginning; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; विलप्य (vilapya) - having lamented; दिवम् (divam) - heaven; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - having ascended; कामगेन (kāmagena) - by the wish-moving; स (sa) - he; सौभेन (saubhena) - by the Saubha (a flying vehicle); क्षिप्त्वा (kṣiptvā) - having thrown; माम् (mām) - me; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kurus;]
(Thus beginning, O great king, having lamented, having ascended heaven, by the wish-moving Saubha, he, having thrown me, O joy of the Kurus.)
O great king, after lamenting in this way, he ascended to heaven in the wish-moving Saubha and cast me away, O joy of the Kurus. (3-15-15)
तमश्रौषमहं गत्वा यथा वृत्तः सुदुर्मतिः। मयि कौरव्य दुष्टात्मा मार्त्तिकावतको नृपः ॥३-१५-१६॥
tamaśrauṣam ahaṃ gatvā yathā vṛttaḥ sudurmatiḥ। mayi kauravya duṣṭātmā mārttikāvatako nṛpaḥ ॥3-15-16॥
[तम् (tam) - that; (accusative singular masculine pronoun); अश्रौषम् (aśrauṣam) - I heard; (1st person singular perfect of śru); अहम् (aham) - I; (pronoun); गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; (absolutive of gam); यथा (yathā) - as; (conjunction); वृत्तः (vṛttaḥ) - happened; (past participle of vṛt); सुदुर्मतिः (sudurmatiḥ) - very evil-minded; (su + dur + mati); मयि (mayi) - towards me; (locative singular of aham); कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; (vocative); दुष्टात्मा (duṣṭātmā) - wicked-souled; (duṣṭa + ātmā); मार्त्तिकावतकः (mārttikāvatakaḥ) - the king of Mrittikāvata; (proper noun); नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; (nṛ + pa);]
(That I heard, I having gone, as happened, very evil-minded; towards me, O Kauravya, wicked-souled, the king of Mrittikāvata, king.)
O Kauravya, I went and heard all that happened—how the very evil-minded, wicked-souled king of Mrittikāvata acted towards me. (3-15-16)
ततोऽहमपि कौरव्य रोषव्याकुललोचनः। निश्चित्य मनसा राजन्वधायास्य मनो दधे ॥३-१५-१७॥
tato'ham api kauravya roṣavyākulalocanaḥ। niścitya manasā rājan vadhāyāsya mano dadhe ॥3-15-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; अहम् (aham) - I; अपि (api) - also; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; रोषव्याकुललोचनः (roṣavyākulalocanaḥ) - with eyes agitated by anger; निश्चित्य (niścitya) - having resolved; मनसा (manasā) - with mind; राजन् (rājan) - O king; वधाय (vadhāya) - for the killing; अस्य (asya) - of him; मनो (mano) - mind; दधे (dadhe) - placed;]
(Then I also, O Kauravya, with eyes agitated by anger, having resolved with mind, O king, for the killing of him, placed mind.)
Then I too, O Kauravya, my eyes filled with anger, firmly resolved in my mind, O king, to kill him. (3-15-17)
आनर्तेषु विमर्दं च क्षेपं चात्मनि कौरव। प्रवृद्धमवलेपं च तस्य दुष्कृतकर्मणः ॥३-१५-१८॥
ānarteṣu vimardaṃ ca kṣepaṃ cātmani kaurava। pravṛddhamavalepaṃ ca tasya duṣkṛtakarmaṇaḥ ॥3-15-18॥
[आनर्तेषु (ānarteṣu) - in the Anarta region; विमर्दं (vimardaṃ) - conflict; च (ca) - and; क्षेपं (kṣepam) - abuse; च (ca) - and; आत्मनि (ātmani) - towards himself; कौरव (kaurava) - O Kaurava; प्रवृद्धम् (pravṛddham) - grown; अवलेपं (avalepham) - arrogance; च (ca) - and; तस्य (tasya) - his; दुष्कृतकर्मणः (duṣkṛtakarmaṇaḥ) - of the evil-doer;]
(In the Anarta region, conflict and abuse towards himself, O Kaurava, and the grown arrogance of that evil-doer.)
O Kaurava, in the Anarta region, there was conflict and abuse directed at himself, and the arrogance of that evil-doer had greatly increased. (3-15-18)
ततः सौभवधायाहं प्रतस्थे पृथिवीपते। स मया सागरावर्ते दृष्ट आसीत्परीप्सता ॥३-१५-१९॥
tataḥ saubhavadhaayāhaṃ pratasthe pṛthivīpate। sa mayā sāgarāvarte dṛṣṭa āsītparīpsatā ॥3-15-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सौभवधाय (saubhavadhaaya) - for the destruction of Saubha; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रतस्थे (pratasthe) - set forth; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivīpate) - O lord of the earth; सः (saḥ) - he; मया (mayā) - by me; सागरावर्ते (sāgarāvarte) - in the whirlpool of the ocean; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; परीप्सता (parīpsatā) - desiring to obtain;]
(Then, for the destruction of Saubha, I set forth, O lord of the earth. He was seen by me in the whirlpool of the ocean, being desirous to obtain.)
Then, O lord of the earth, I set out for the destruction of Saubha. There, in the whirlpool of the ocean, I saw him, eager to achieve his purpose. (3-15-19)
ततः प्रध्माप्य जलजं पाञ्चजन्यमहं नृप। आहूय शाल्वं समरे युद्धाय समवस्थितः ॥३-१५-२०॥
tataḥ pradhmāpya jalajaṃ pāñcajanyam ahaṃ nṛpa। āhūya śālvaṃ samare yuddhāya samavasthitaḥ ॥3-15-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रध्माप्य (pradhmāpya) - having blown; जलजम् (jalajam) - conch; पाञ्चजन्यम् (pāñcajanyam) - Panchajanya; अहम् (aham) - I; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; आहूय (āhūya) - having summoned; शाल्वम् (śālvam) - Śālva; समरे (samare) - in battle; युद्धाय (yuddhāya) - for fighting; समवस्थितः (samavasthitaḥ) - stood ready;]
(Then, having blown the conch Panchajanya, I, O king, having summoned Śālva, stood ready in battle for fighting.)
Then, O king, after blowing the Panchajanya conch, I summoned Śālva and stood ready for battle. (3-15-20)
सुमुहूर्तमभूद्युद्धं तत्र मे दानवैः सह। वशीभूताश्च मे सर्वे भूतले च निपातिताः ॥३-१५-२१॥
sumuhūrtam abhūd yuddhaṃ tatra me dānavaiḥ saha। vaśībhūtāś ca me sarve bhūtale ca nipātitāḥ ॥3-15-21॥

(For a good period of time there was battle with the Dānavas together with my (forces); all my subdued (ones) and all were cast down on the earth.)
There was a battle for a good while with the Dānavas there; all my subdued forces were cast down to the earth. (3-15-21)
एतत्कार्यं महाबाहो येनाहं नागमं तदा। श्रुत्वैव हास्तिनपुरं द्यूतं चाविनयोत्थितम् ॥३-१५-२२॥
etatkāryaṃ mahābāho yenāhaṃ nāgamaṃ tadā। śrutvaiva hāstinapuraṃ dyūtaṃ cāvinayotthitam ॥3-15-22॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; कार्यं (kāryam) - action; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; येन (yena) - by which; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; आगमं (āgamam) - came; तदा (tadā) - then; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; एव (eva) - indeed; हास्तिनपुरं (hāstinapuram) - Hastinapura; द्यूतं (dyūtam) - dice-game; च (ca) - and; अविनय (avinaya) - impropriety; उत्थितम् (utthitam) - arisen;]
(This action, O mighty-armed, by which I did not come then; having indeed heard of Hastinapura, the dice-game, and the impropriety arisen.)
O mighty-armed one, this was the reason why I did not come then; for I had just heard about the dice-game and the impropriety that had arisen in Hastinapura. (3-15-22)
