Pancharatra: Krishna describes the war preparations that were made at Dwaraka to defend against Soubha.

vāsudeva mahābāho vistareṇa mahāmate। saubhasya vadhamācakṣva na hi tṛpyāmi kathyataḥ ॥3-16-1॥

O Vasudeva, mighty-armed and wise, please describe in detail the destruction of Saubha; for truly, I am not yet satisfied by your narration. (3-16-1)

तत्रस्थोऽथ महीपालो योधयामास तां पुरीम्। अभिसारेण सर्वेण तत्र युद्धमवर्तत ॥३-१६-४॥
tatrastho'tha mahīpālo yodhayāmāsa tāṃ purīm। abhisāreṇa sarveṇa tatra yuddhamavartata ॥3-16-4॥

Then, being present there, the king ordered an attack on that city; with a full assault, a battle took place there. (3-16-4)
पुरी समन्ताद्विहिता सपताका सतोरणा। सचक्रा सहुडा चैव सयन्त्रखनका तथा ॥३-१६-५॥

सोपतल्पप्रतोलीका साट्टाट्टालकगोपुरा। सकचग्रहणी चैव सोल्कालातावपोथिका ॥३-१६-६॥

सोष्ट्रिका भरतश्रेष्ठ सभेरीपणवानका। समित्तृणकुशा राजन्सशतघ्नीकलाङ्गला ॥३-१६-७॥

सभुशुण्ड्यश्मलगुडा सायुधा सपरश्वधा। लोहचर्मवती चापि साग्निः सहुडशृङ्गिका ॥३-१६-८॥
sabhuśuṇḍyaśmalaguḍā sāyudhā saparaśvadhā। lohacarmavatī cāpi sāgniḥ sakuḍaśṛṅgikā ॥3-16-8॥

शास्त्रदृष्टेन विधिना संयुक्ता भरतर्षभ। द्रव्यैरनेकैर्विविधैर्गदसाम्बोद्धवादिभिः ॥३-१६-९॥
śāstra-dṛṣṭena vidhinā saṁyuktā bharatarṣabha। dravyair anekair vividhair gadasām boddhavādibhiḥ ॥3-16-9॥
[शास्त्रदृष्टेन (śāstra-dṛṣṭena) - by the authority of śāstra; by what is seen in scripture; विधिना (vidhinā) - by the rule; by the method; संयुक्ता (saṁyuktā) - joined; united; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; द्रव्यैः (dravyaiḥ) - with substances; with materials; अनेकैः (anekaiḥ) - with many; with numerous; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - with various; of different kinds; गदसाम् (gadasām) - of medicines; of remedies; बोद्धव (boddhava) - to be known; to be understood; आदिभिः (ādibhiḥ) - and others; and so on;]
(By the authority of śāstra, by the rule, joined, O bull among the Bharatas, with substances, with many, with various, of medicines, to be known, and others.)

पुरुषैः कुरुशार्दूल समर्थैः प्रतिबाधने। अभिख्यातकुलैर्वीरैर्दृष्टवीर्यैश्च संयुगे ॥३-१६-१०॥
puruṣaiḥ kuruśārdūla samarthaiḥ pratibādhane। abhikhyātakulairvīrairdṛṣṭavīryaiśca saṃyuge ॥3-16-10॥

O tiger among the Kurus, in battle, you are opposed by capable men from renowned families, by heroes of proven valor. (3-16-10)
मध्यमेन च गुल्मेन रक्षिता सारसञ्ज्ञिता। उत्क्षिप्तगुल्मैश्च तथा हयैश्चैव पदातिभिः ॥३-१६-११॥
madhyamena ca gulmena rakṣitā sārasañjñitā। utkṣiptagulmaiś ca tathā hayaiz caiva padātibhiḥ ॥3-16-11॥
[मध्यमेन (madhyamena) - by the middle; by the central; च (ca) - and; गुल्मेन (gulmena) - by the battalion; by the military unit; रक्षिता (rakṣitā) - protected; सारसञ्ज्ञिता (sārasañjñitā) - named Sāra; called Sāra; उत्क्षिप्तगुल्मैः (utkṣiptagulmaiḥ) - by the raised battalions; by the elevated military units; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - also; likewise; हयैः (hayaiḥ) - by horses; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; पदातिभिः (padātibhiḥ) - by foot soldiers;]
(By the middle and by the battalion protected, named Sāra; by the raised battalions and also by horses and indeed by foot soldiers.)
The formation called Sāra was protected in the center by battalions, as well as by elevated battalions, horses, and foot soldiers. (3-16-11)
आघोषितं च नगरे न पातव्या सुरेति ह। प्रमादं परिरक्षद्भिरुग्रसेनोद्धवादिभिः ॥३-१६-१२॥
āghoṣitaṃ ca nagare na pātavyā sureti ha। pramādaṃ parirakṣadbhirugrasenoddhavādibhiḥ ॥3-16-12॥
[आघोषितं (āghoṣitam) - announced; proclaimed; च (ca) - and; नगरे (nagare) - in the city; न (na) - not; पातव्या (pātavyā) - to be drunk; to be consumed; सुरेति (sureti) - wine thus; liquor thus; ह (ha) - indeed; surely; प्रमादं (pramādam) - negligence; carelessness; परिरक्षद्भिः (parirakṣadbhiḥ) - by those protecting; by the protectors; उग्रसेन (ugrasena) - Ugrasena; उद्धव (uddhava) - Uddhava; आदिभिः (ādibhiḥ) - and others; and the rest;]
(Announced and in the city, not to be drunk is wine thus indeed; negligence by those protecting, Ugrasena, Uddhava and others;)
It was proclaimed in the city that wine must not be consumed; this was enforced by the protectors such as Ugrasena, Uddhava, and others, to prevent negligence. (3-16-12)
प्रमत्तेष्वभिघातं हि कुर्याच्छाल्वो नराधिपः। इति कृत्वाप्रमत्तास्ते सर्वे वृष्ण्यन्धकाः स्थिताः ॥३-१६-१३॥
pramatteṣvabhighātaṃ hi kuryācchālvo narādhipaḥ। iti kṛtvāpramattāste sarve vṛṣṇyandhakāḥ sthitāḥ ॥3-16-13॥
[प्रमत्तेषु (pramatteṣu) - among the negligent; अभिघातं (abhighātam) - attack; हि (hi) - indeed; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - would do; शाल्वः (śālvaḥ) - Śālva; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - king; इति (iti) - thus; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having considered; अप्रमत्ताः (apramattāḥ) - not negligent; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वृष्ण्यन्धकाः (vṛṣṇyandhakāḥ) - the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - remained;]
(Among the negligent, attack indeed would do Śālva, king; thus having considered, not negligent they all Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas remained.)
Śālva, the king, would indeed attack when they were negligent; thus, having considered this, all the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas remained vigilant. (3-16-13)
आनर्ताश्च तथा सर्वे नटनर्तकगायनाः। बहिर्विवासिताः सर्वे रक्षद्भिर्वित्तसञ्चयान् ॥३-१६-१४॥
ānartāś ca tathā sarve naṭa-nartaka-gāyanāḥ। bahir vivāsitāḥ sarve rakṣadbhiḥ vitta-saṃcayān ॥3-16-14॥

(People of Anarta and likewise all actors, dancers, singers; outside banished all by the guards wealth accumulations.)
The people of Anarta, as well as all actors, dancers, and singers, were banished outside; all accumulations of wealth were guarded. (3-16-14)
सङ्क्रमा भेदिताः सर्वे नावश्च प्रतिषेधिताः। परिखाश्चापि कौरव्य कीलैः सुनिचिताः कृताः ॥३-१६-१५॥
saṅkramā bheditāḥ sarve nāvaś ca pratiṣedhitāḥ। parikhāś cāpi kauravya kīlaiḥ sunicitāḥ kṛtāḥ ॥3-16-15॥
[सङ्क्रमा (saṅkramā) - bridges; भेदिताः (bheditāḥ) - broken; सर्वे (sarve) - all; नावः (nāvaḥ) - boats; च (ca) - and; प्रतिषेधिताः (pratiṣedhitāḥ) - prevented; परिखाः (parikhāḥ) - moats; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; कीलैः (kīlaiḥ) - with stakes; सुनिचिताः (sunicitāḥ) - well-fixed; कृताः (kṛtāḥ) - made;]
(Bridges broken all, boats and prevented, moats also O descendant of Kuru with stakes well-fixed made.)
All the bridges have been broken, all the boats prevented, and the moats, O descendant of Kuru, have also been made well-secured with stakes. (3-16-15)
उदपानाः कुरुश्रेष्ठ तथैवाप्यम्बरीषकाः। समन्तात्क्रोशमात्रं च कारिता विषमा च भूः ॥३-१६-१६॥
udapānāḥ kuruśreṣṭha tathaivāpyambarīṣakāḥ। samantātkrośamātraṃ ca kāritā viṣamā ca bhūḥ ॥3-16-16॥
[उदपानाः (udapānāḥ) - wells; कुरुश्रेष्ठ (kuruśreṣṭha) - O best of the Kurus; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; अपि (api) - also; अम्बरीषकाः (ambarīṣakāḥ) - pools; समन्तात् (samantāt) - on all sides; क्रोशमात्रं (krośamātram) - of the measure of a krośa; च (ca) - and; कारिता (kāritā) - have been made; विषमा (viṣamā) - uneven; च (ca) - and; भूः (bhūḥ) - the ground;]
(Wells, O best of the Kurus, and likewise also pools, on all sides of the measure of a krośa, and the ground has been made uneven.)

प्रकृत्या विषमं दुर्गं प्रकृत्या च सुरक्षितम्। प्रकृत्या चायुधोपेतं विशेषेण तदानघ ॥३-१६-१७॥
prakṛtyā viṣamaṃ durgaṃ prakṛtyā ca surakṣitam। prakṛtyā cāyudhopetaṃ viśeṣeṇa tadānagha ॥3-16-17॥
[प्रकृत्या (prakṛtyā) - by nature; विषमं (viṣamaṃ) - uneven; दुर्गं (durgaṃ) - fort; प्रकृत्या (prakṛtyā) - by nature; च (ca) - and; सुरक्षितम् (surakṣitam) - well-protected; प्रकृत्या (prakṛtyā) - by nature; च (ca) - and; आयुधोपेतं (āyudhopetaṃ) - equipped with weapons; विशेषेण (viśeṣeṇa) - especially; तदा (tadā) - then; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]

सुरक्षितं सुगुप्तं च सर्वायुधसमन्वितम्। तत्पुरं भरतश्रेष्ठ यथेन्द्रभवनं तथा ॥३-१६-१८॥
surakṣitaṃ suguptaṃ ca sarvāyudhasamanvitam। tatpuraṃ bharataśreṣṭha yathendrabhavanaṃ tathā ॥3-16-18॥

(Well-protected, well-guarded and endowed with all weapons; that city, O best of the Bharatas, just as Indra's palace, so.)
O best of the Bharatas, that city was well-protected, well-guarded, and equipped with all kinds of weapons, just like Indra's palace. (3-16-18)
न चामुद्रोऽभिनिर्याति न चामुद्रः प्रवेश्यते। वृष्ण्यन्धकपुरे राजंस्तदा सौभसमागमे ॥३-१६-१९॥
na cāmudro'bhinir yāti na cāmudraḥ praveśyate। vṛṣṇy-andhaka-pure rājan tadā saubha-samāgame ॥3-16-19॥

No one who is not of the Mudra clan goes out, nor is anyone not of the Mudra clan admitted; O king, this was so in the city of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas at the time of the coming of Saubha. (3-16-19)
अनु रथ्यासु सर्वासु चत्वरेषु च कौरव। बलं बभूव राजेन्द्र प्रभूतगजवाजिमत् ॥३-१६-२०॥
anu rathyāsu sarvāsu catvareṣu ca kaurava। balaṃ babhūva rājendra prabhūtagajavājimat ॥3-16-20॥

दत्तवेतनभक्तं च दत्तायुधपरिच्छदम्। कृतापदानं च तदा बलमासीन्महाभुज ॥३-१६-२१॥

O mighty-armed one, at that time the army, having been given wages, food, weapons, equipment, and rewards, was ready. (3-16-21)
न कुप्यवेतनी कश्चिन्न चातिक्रान्तवेतनी। नानुग्रहभृतः कश्चिन्न चादृष्टपराक्रमः ॥३-१६-२२॥
na kupyavetani kaścin na cātikrāntavetani। nānugrahabhṛtaḥ kaścin na cādṛṣṭaparākramaḥ ॥3-16-22॥
[न (na) - not; कुप्यवेतनी (kupyavetani) - one whose wages are liable to be withheld due to anger; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; न (na) - not; चातिक्रान्तवेतनी (cātikrāntavetani) - one whose wages are overdue; न (na) - not; अनुग्रहभृतः (anugrahabhṛtaḥ) - one who receives favor as wages; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अदृष्टपराक्रमः (adṛṣṭaparākramaḥ) - one whose valor has not been seen;]
(Not one whose wages are liable to be withheld due to anger, not anyone whose wages are overdue. Not one who receives favor as wages, not anyone whose valor has not been seen.)
There is no one whose wages are withheld out of anger, nor anyone whose wages are overdue. There is no one who receives wages as a favor, nor anyone whose valor has not been witnessed. (3-16-22)
एवं सुविहिता राजन्द्वारका भूरिदक्षिणैः। आहुकेन सुगुप्ता च राज्ञा राजीवलोचन ॥३-१६-२३॥
evaṃ suvihitā rājan dvārakā bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ। āhukena suguptā ca rājñā rājīvalocana ॥3-16-23॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सुविहिता (suvihitā) - well-established; राजन् (rājan) - O king; द्वारका (dvārakā) - Dvaraka; भूरिदक्षिणैः (bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ) - with abundant gifts; आहुकेन (āhukena) - by Ahuka; सुगुप्ता (suguptā) - well-protected; च (ca) - and; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; राजीवलोचन (rājīvalocana) - O lotus-eyed one;]
(Thus, well-established, O king, Dvaraka with abundant gifts, by Ahuka, well-protected and by the king, O lotus-eyed one.)
O lotus-eyed one, thus Dvaraka, O king, was well-established with abundant gifts, and was well-protected by Ahuka and the king. (3-16-23)
