Pancharatra: Krishna says he was away from Dwaraka, else he would have stopped gambling.
वासुदेव उवाच॥
vāsudeva uvāca॥

Vāsudeva said.
नेदं कृच्छ्रमनुप्राप्तो भवान्स्याद्वसुधाधिप। यद्यहं द्वारकायां स्यां राजन्संनिहितः पुरा ॥३-१४-१॥
nedaṃ kṛcchram anuprāpto bhavān syād vasudhādhipa। yady ahaṃ dvārakāyāṃ syāṃ rājan saṃnihitaḥ purā ॥3-14-1॥
[नेदं (nedaṃ) - not this; कृच्छ्रम् (kṛcchram) - difficulty; अनुप्राप्तः (anuprāptaḥ) - attained; भवान् (bhavān) - you; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; वसुधाधिप (vasudhādhipa) - lord of the earth; यदि (yadi) - if; अहम् (aham) - I; द्वारकायाम् (dvārakāyām) - in Dvārakā; स्याम् (syām) - were; राजन् (rājan) - O king; संनिहितः (saṃnihitaḥ) - present; पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(Not this difficulty would have been attained by you, lord of the earth, if I had been present in Dvārakā formerly, O king.)
O king, you would not have encountered this difficulty, lord of the earth, if I had been present in Dvārakā before. (3-14-1)
आगच्छेयमहं द्यूतमनाहूतोऽपि कौरवैः। आम्बिकेयेन दुर्धर्ष राज्ञा दुर्योधनेन च ॥३-१४-२॥
āgaccheyam ahaṃ dyūtam anāhūto'pi kauravaiḥ. āmbikeyena durdharṣa rājñā duryodhanena ca ॥3-14-2॥
[आगच्छेयम् (āgaccheyam) - I might go; (optative of āgacch, to come; first person singular); अहम् (aham) - I; द्यूतम् (dyūtam) - dice-game; अनाहूतः (anāhūtaḥ) - not invited; अपि (api) - even; कौरवैः (kauravaiḥ) - by the Kauravas; आम्बिकेयेन (āmbikeyena) - by the son of Ambika (Dhritarashtra); दुर्धर्ष (durdharṣa) - difficult to overcome; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; दुर्योधनेन (duryodhanena) - by Duryodhana; च (ca) - and;]
(I might go I to the dice-game not invited even by the Kauravas, by Ambika's son, difficult to overcome, by the king, by Duryodhana and.)
Even if I am not invited by the Kauravas, by King Dhritarashtra, who is difficult to overcome, and by Duryodhana, I might still go to the dice-game. (3-14-2)
वारयेयमहं द्यूतं बहून्दोषान्प्रदर्शयन्। भीष्मद्रोणौ समानाय्य कृपं बाह्लीकमेव च ॥३-१४-३॥
vārayeyam ahaṃ dyūtaṃ bahūn doṣān pradarśayan। bhīṣma-droṇau samānāyya kṛpaṃ bāhlīkam eva ca ॥3-14-3॥
[वारयेयम् (vārayeyam) - I would restrain; अहम् (aham) - I; द्यूतम् (dyūtaṃ) - gambling; बहून् (bahūn) - many; दोषान् (doṣān) - faults; प्रदर्शयन् (pradarśayan) - showing; भीष्मद्रोणौ (bhīṣma-droṇau) - Bhishma and Drona; समानाय्य (samānāyya) - having brought together; कृपम् (kṛpam) - Kripa; बाह्लीकम् (bāhlīkam) - Bahlika; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(I would restrain gambling, showing many faults, having brought together Bhishma and Drona, Kripa, and Bahlika indeed and.)
I would have restrained the gambling by showing its many faults, having assembled Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and Bahlika as well. (3-14-3)
वैचित्रवीर्यं राजानमलं द्यूतेन कौरव। पुत्राणां तव राजेन्द्र त्वन्निमित्तमिति प्रभो ॥३-१४-४॥
vaicitravīryaṃ rājānam alaṃ dyūtena kaurava। putrāṇāṃ tava rājendra tvannimittam iti prabho ॥3-14-4॥
[वैचित्रवीर्यं (vaicitravīryam) - of Vicitravīrya; (proper name); राजानम् (rājānam) - king; (accusative singular); अलम् (alam) - enough; sufficient; द्यूतेन (dyūtena) - by gambling; (instrumental singular); कौरव (kaurava) - O Kaurava; (vocative); पुत्राणां (putrāṇām) - of sons; (genitive plural); तव (tava) - your; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; (vocative); त्वन्निमित्तम् (tvannimittam) - for your sake; because of you; इति (iti) - thus; so; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; (vocative);]
(Vicitravīrya king enough by gambling O Kaurava; of sons your O king for your sake thus O lord.)
O Kaurava, O king, O lord, the king Vicitravīrya was sufficiently lost by gambling for the sake of your sons, thus.
तत्र वक्ष्याम्यहं दोषान्यैर्भवानवरोपितः। वीरसेनसुतो यैश्च राज्यात्प्रभ्रंशितः पुरा ॥३-१४-५॥
tatra vakṣyāmyahaṃ doṣānyairbhavānavaropitaḥ। vīrasenasuto yaiśca rājyātprabhraṃśitaḥ purā ॥3-14-5॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall speak; अहम् (aham) - I; दोषान् (doṣān) - faults; यैः (yaiḥ) - by which; भवान् (bhavān) - you; अवरोपितः (avaropitaḥ) - deposed; वीरसेनसुतः (vīrasenasutaḥ) - the son of Vīrasena; यैश्च (yaiśca) - and by which; राज्यात् (rājyāt) - from the kingdom; प्रभ्रंशितः (prabhraṃśitaḥ) - deprived; पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(There I shall speak I faults by which you deposed; the son of Vīrasena and by which from the kingdom deprived formerly.)
There I shall tell the faults by which you, the son of Vīrasena, were formerly deposed and deprived of the kingdom. (3-14-5)
अभक्षितविनाशं च देवनेन विशां पते। सातत्यं च प्रसङ्गस्य वर्णयेयं यथातथम् ॥३-१४-६॥
abhakṣitavināśaṃ ca devenena viśāṃ pate. sātatyaṃ ca prasaṅgasya varṇayeyam yathātatham ॥3-14-6॥
[अभक्षित (abhakṣita) - not-eaten; विनाशं (vināśam) - destruction; च (ca) - and; देवनेन (devenena) - by the god; विशां (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord; सातत्यं (sātatyam) - continuity; च (ca) - and; प्रसङ्गस्य (prasaṅgasya) - of the context; वर्णयेयं (varṇayeyam) - I would describe; यथातथम् (yathātatham) - as it is;]
(Not-eaten destruction and by the god, O lord of men; continuity and of the context I would describe as it is.)
O lord of men, I would describe the destruction of what is not eaten by the god, as well as the continuity of the context, just as it is. (3-14-6)
स्त्रियोऽक्षा मृगया पानमेतत्कामसमुत्थितम्। व्यसनं चतुष्टयं प्रोक्तं यै राजन्भ्रश्यते श्रियः ॥३-१४-७॥
striyo'kṣā mṛgayā pānam etat kāmasamutthitam। vyasanaṃ catuṣṭayaṃ proktaṃ yai rājan bhraśyate śriyaḥ॥3-14-7॥
[स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; अक्षाः (akṣāḥ) - dice; मृगया (mṛgayā) - hunting; पानम् (pānam) - drinking; एतत् (etat) - this; कामसमुत्थितम् (kāmasamutthitam) - arisen from desire; व्यसनम् (vyasanam) - vice; चतुष्टयम् (catuṣṭayam) - fourfold; प्रोक्तम् (proktam) - declared; यैः (yaiḥ) - by which; राजन् (rājan) - O king; भ्रश्यते (bhraśyate) - is deprived; श्रियः (śriyaḥ) - of prosperity;]
(Women, dice, hunting, drinking—this fourfold vice arisen from desire is declared, by which, O king, one is deprived of prosperity.)
O king, women, dice, hunting, and drinking are declared to be the fourfold vices arising from desire, by which one loses prosperity. (3-14-7)
तत्र सर्वत्र वक्तव्यं मन्यन्ते शास्त्रकोविदाः। विशेषतश्च वक्तव्यं द्यूते पश्यन्ति तद्विदः ॥३-१४-८॥
tatra sarvatra vaktavyaṃ manyante śāstrakovidāḥ। viśeṣataś ca vaktavyaṃ dyūte paśyanti tadvidaḥ ॥3-14-8॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; वक्तव्यं (vaktavyam) - to be spoken; मन्यन्ते (manyante) - they consider; शास्त्रकोविदाः (śāstrakovidāḥ) - those skilled in śāstra; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; च (ca) - and; वक्तव्यं (vaktavyam) - to be spoken; द्यूते (dyūte) - in gambling; पश्यन्ति (paśyanti) - they see; तद्विदः (tadvidaḥ) - those who know that;]
(There everywhere to be spoken they consider those skilled in śāstra. Especially and to be spoken in gambling they see those who know that. (3-14-8))
Those skilled in śāstra consider that it should be spoken everywhere. Especially, those who know that see that it should be spoken in gambling. (3-14-8)
एकाह्ना द्रव्यनाशोऽत्र ध्रुवं व्यसनमेव च। अभुक्तनाशश्चार्थानां वाक्पारुष्यं च केवलम् ॥३-१४-९॥
ekāhnā dravyanāśo'tra dhruvaṃ vyasanameva ca। abhuktanāśaścārthānāṃ vākpāruṣyaṃ ca kevalam ॥3-14-9॥
[एकाह्ना (ekāhnā) - in one day; द्रव्यनाशः (dravyanāśaḥ) - loss of wealth; अत्र (atra) - here; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certain; व्यसनम् (vyasanam) - misfortune; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; अभुक्तनाशः (abhuktanāśaḥ) - loss of unconsumed (goods); च (ca) - and; अर्थानाम् (arthānām) - of wealth; वाक्पारुष्यं (vākpāruṣyam) - harshness of speech; च (ca) - and; केवलम् (kevalam) - only;]
(In one day, loss of wealth here is certain misfortune indeed and loss of unconsumed wealth and only harshness of speech;)
Within a single day, the loss of wealth here is certainly a misfortune, and the loss of unconsumed wealth and only harsh words remain. (3-14-9)
एतच्चान्यच्च कौरव्य प्रसङ्गि कटुकोदयम्। द्यूते ब्रूयां महाबाहो समासाद्याम्बिकासुतम् ॥३-१४-१०॥
etaccānyacca kauravya prasaṅgi kaṭukodayam। dyūte brūyāṃ mahābāho samāsādyāmbikāsutam ॥3-14-10॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; च (ca) - and; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; प्रसङ्गि (prasaṅgi) - in connection; कटुक (kaṭuka) - bitter; उदयम् (udayam) - arising; द्यूते (dyūte) - in gambling; ब्रूयाम् (brūyām) - I would say; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; अम्बिका-सुतम् (ambikā-sutam) - son of Ambika;]
(This and also the other, O Kauravya, in connection with the arising of bitterness; in gambling I would say, O mighty-armed, having approached the son of Ambika.)
O descendant of Kuru, both this and the other, when bitterness arises in connection with gambling, O mighty-armed one, I would speak after approaching the son of Ambika. (3-14-10)
एवमुक्तो यदि मया गृह्णीयाद्वचनं मम। अनामयं स्याद्धर्मस्य कुरूणां कुरुनन्दन ॥३-१४-११॥
evam-ukto yadi mayā gṛhṇīyād vacanaṃ mama। anāmayaṃ syād dharmasya kurūṇāṃ kurunandana ॥3-14-11॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; यदि (yadi) - if; मया (mayā) - by me; गृह्णीयात् (gṛhṇīyāt) - should accept; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; मम (mama) - my; अनामयम् (anāmayam) - free from harm; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kurus;]
(Thus addressed, if by me he should accept my word, free from harm would be of dharma of the Kurus, O joy of the Kurus.)
If, thus addressed by me, he should accept my word, then the dharma of the Kurus would be free from harm, O joy of the Kurus. (3-14-11)
न चेत्स मम राजेन्द्र गृह्णीयान्मधुरं वचः। पथ्यं च भरतश्रेष्ठ निगृह्णीयां बलेन तम् ॥३-१४-१२॥
na cets mama rājendra gṛhṇīyān madhuraṃ vacaḥ। pathyaṃ ca bharataśreṣṭha nigṛhṇīyāṃ balena tam ॥3-14-12॥
[न (na) - not; चेत् (cet) - if; स (sa) - he; मम (mama) - my; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; गृह्णीयात् (gṛhṇīyāt) - should accept; मधुरं (madhuraṃ) - sweet; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; पथ्यं (pathyaṃ) - wholesome; च (ca) - and; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of Bharatas; निगृह्णीयाम् (nigṛhṇīyām) - I should restrain; बलेन (balena) - by force; तम् (tam) - him;]
(If he, O king, does not accept my sweet speech, and, O best of Bharatas, (does not accept) the wholesome (advice), I should restrain him by force.)
O king, if he does not accept my gentle words, and, O best of Bharatas, does not accept the wholesome advice, then I should restrain him by force. (3-14-12)
अथैनानभिनीयैवं सुहृदो नाम दुर्हृदः। सभासदश्च तान्सर्वान्भेदयेयं दुरोदरान् ॥३-१४-१३॥
athainānabhinīyaivaṃ suhṛdo nāma durhṛdaḥ। sabhāsadaś ca tān sarvān bhedayeyam durodarān ॥3-14-13॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; एनान् (enān) - these (persons); अभिनीय (abhinīya) - having brought near; having approached; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; in this way; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; well-wishers; नाम (nāma) - called; named; दुर्हृदः (durhṛdaḥ) - ill-hearted; evil-minded; सभासदः (sabhāsadaḥ) - assembly members; those present in the assembly; च (ca) - and; तान् (tān) - them; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; भेदयेयम् (bhedayeyam) - I would cause division; I would split; दुरोदरान् (durodarān) - those with evil bellies; wicked ones;]
(Now, having brought these thus, friends called ill-hearted, and the assembly members, I would cause division among all those wicked ones.)
Now, having thus brought these so-called friends who are actually ill-hearted, and the assembly members, I would create division among all those wicked ones. (3-14-13)
असांनिध्यं तु कौरव्य ममानर्तेष्वभूत्तदा। येनेदं व्यसनं प्राप्ता भवन्तो द्यूतकारितम् ॥३-१४-१४॥
asāṁnidhyaṁ tu kauravya mamānarteṣvabhūttadā। yenedaṁ vyasanaṁ prāptā bhavanto dyūtakāritam ॥3-14-14॥
[असांनिध्यं (asāṁnidhyam) - absence of presence; तु (tu) - but; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; मम (mama) - my; अनर्तेषु (anarteṣu) - in calamities; अभूत् (abhūt) - was; तदा (tadā) - then; येन (yena) - by which; इदं (idam) - this; व्यसनं (vyasanam) - misfortune; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - obtained; भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - you all; द्यूतकारितम् (dyūtakāritam) - caused by gambling;]
(But, O Kauravya, my absence in calamities was then, by which this misfortune caused by gambling has been obtained by you all.)
But, O Kauravya, it was my absence during the calamities that led you all to this misfortune brought about by gambling. (3-14-14)
सोऽहमेत्य कुरुश्रेष्ठ द्वारकां पाण्डुनन्दन। अश्रौषं त्वां व्यसनिनं युयुधानाद्यथातथम् ॥३-१४-१५॥
so'ham etya kuruśreṣṭha dvārakāṃ pāṇḍunandana। aśrauṣaṃ tvāṃ vyasaninaṃ yuyudhānād yathātatham ॥3-14-15॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; एत्य (etya) - having come; कुरुश्रेष्ठ (kuruśreṣṭha) - O best of the Kurus; द्वारकाम् (dvārakām) - Dvārakā; पाण्डुनन्दन (pāṇḍunandana) - O son of Pāṇḍu; अश्रौषम् (aśrauṣam) - I heard; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; व्यसनिनम् (vyasaninam) - afflicted; युयुधानात् (yuyudhānāt) - from Yuyudhāna; यथा (yathā) - as; तथम् (tatham) - thus;]
(He, I having come, O best of the Kurus, to Dvārakā, O son of Pāṇḍu, I heard you afflicted from Yuyudhāna as thus.)
O best of the Kurus, O son of Pāṇḍu, after I arrived at Dvārakā, I heard from Yuyudhāna how you were afflicted, just as it happened. (3-14-15)
श्रुत्वैव चाहं राजेन्द्र परमोद्विग्नमानसः। तूर्णमभ्यागतोऽस्मि त्वां द्रष्टुकामो विशां पते ॥३-१४-१६॥
śrutvaiva cāhaṃ rājendra paramodvignamānasaḥ। tūrṇam abhyāgato'smi tvāṃ draṣṭukāmo viśāṃ pate ॥3-14-16॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king of kings; परम (parama) - extremely; उद्विग्न (udvigna) - agitated; मानसः (mānasaḥ) - in mind; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; अभ्यागतः (abhyāgataḥ) - approached; अस्मि (asmi) - am; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; द्रष्टु (draṣṭu) - to see; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desiring; विशां (viśām) - of the people; पते (pate) - O lord;]
(Having heard indeed and I, O king of kings, extremely agitated in mind, quickly have approached am you to see desiring, O lord of the people.)
As soon as I heard, O king, I, with a greatly disturbed mind, quickly came to you, desiring to see you, O lord of the people. (3-14-16)
अहो कृच्छ्रमनुप्राप्ताः सर्वे स्म भरतर्षभ। ये वयं त्वां व्यसनिनं पश्यामः सह सोदरैः ॥३-१४-१७॥
aho kṛcchram anuprāptāḥ sarve sma bharatarṣabha। ye vayaṃ tvāṃ vyasaninaṃ paśyāmaḥ saha sodaraiḥ ॥3-14-17॥
[अहो (aho) - alas; कृच्छ्रम् (kṛcchram) - difficulty; अनुप्राप्ताः (anuprāptāḥ) - attained; सर्वे (sarve) - all; स्म (sma) - indeed; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas; ये (ye) - who; वयम् (vayam) - we; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; व्यसनिनम् (vyasaninam) - afflicted; पश्यामः (paśyāmaḥ) - see; सह (saha) - together with; सोदरैः (sodaraiḥ) - with brothers;]
(Alas; difficulty; attained; all; indeed; bull among the Bharatas; who; we; you; afflicted; see; together with; with brothers.)
Alas, O bull among the Bharatas, we all have indeed encountered difficulty, we who see you afflicted together with your brothers. (3-14-17)
