वल्गु चित्रपदं श्लक्ष्णं याज्ञसेनि त्वया वचः। उक्तं तच्छ्रुतमस्माभिर्नास्तिक्यं तु प्रभाषसे ॥३-३२-१॥
valgu citrapadaṃ ślakṣṇaṃ yājñaseni tvayā vacaḥ। uktaṃ tac chrutam asmābhir nāstikyaṃ tu prabhāṣase॥3-32-1॥
[वल्गु (valgu) - sweetly; pleasant; charmingly; चित्रपदं (citrapadam) - with varied words; with beautiful expressions; श्लक्ष्णं (ślakṣṇam) - smooth; gentle; याज्ञसेनि (yājñaseni) - O daughter of Yajñasena; Draupadi; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; words; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - spoken; said; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; नास्तिक्यं (nāstikyam) - atheism; irreligion; तु (tu) - but; प्रभाषसे (prabhāṣase) - you speak; you utter;]
(Sweet, varied-worded, gentle, O Yajñaseni, by you speech (was) spoken; that (was) heard by us; atheism but you speak;)
O Yajñaseni, you have spoken sweet, varied, and gentle words; we have heard that speech, but you speak of atheism. (3-32-1)
नाहं धर्मफलान्वेषी राजपुत्रि चराम्युत। ददामि देयमित्येव यजे यष्टव्यमित्युत ॥३-३२-२॥
nāhaṃ dharmaphalānveṣī rājaputri carāmyuta। dadāmi deyamityeva yaje yaṣṭavyamityuta ॥3-32-2॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; धर्मफल (dharmaphala) - fruit of dharma; अन्वेषी (anveṣī) - seeker; राजपुत्रि (rājaputri) - O princess; चरामि (carāmi) - I practice; उत (uta) - indeed; ददामि (dadāmi) - I give; देयम् (deyam) - what is to be given; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - only; यजे (yaje) - I sacrifice; यष्टव्यम् (yaṣṭavyam) - what is to be sacrificed; इति (iti) - thus; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Not I fruit of dharma seeker O princess I practice indeed. I give what is to be given thus only, I sacrifice what is to be sacrificed thus indeed. (3-32-2))
O princess, I do not practice seeking the fruits of dharma. I give simply because it is to be given, and I perform sacrifices simply because they are to be performed. (3-32-2)
अस्तु वात्र फलं मा वा कर्तव्यं पुरुषेण यत्। गृहानावसता कृष्णे यथाशक्ति करोमि तत् ॥३-३२-३॥
astu vātra phalaṃ mā vā kartavyaṃ puruṣeṇa yat। gṛhānāvasatā kṛṣṇe yathāśakti karomi tat ॥3-32-3॥
[अस्तु (astu) - let it be; वा (vā) - or; अत्र (atra) - here; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; मा (mā) - not; वा (vā) - or; कर्तव्यं (kartavyaṃ) - to be done; पुरुषेण (puruṣeṇa) - by the man; यत् (yat) - which; गृहान् (gṛhān) - houses; अवसता (avasatā) - by the dweller; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - in Kṛṣṇa; यथा (yathā) - as; शक्ति (śakti) - ability; करोमि (karomi) - I do; तत् (tat) - that;]
(Let it be or here fruit not or to be done by the man which houses by the dweller in Kṛṣṇa as ability I do that.)
Let there be or not be fruit here; whatever is to be done by a man, as a dweller in Kṛṣṇa's house, I do that to the best of my ability. (3-32-3)
धर्मं चरामि सुश्रोणि न धर्मफलकारणात्। आगमाननतिक्रम्य सतां वृत्तमवेक्ष्य च ॥ धर्म एव मनः कृष्णे स्वभावाच्चैव मे धृतम् ॥३-३२-४॥
dharmaṃ carāmi suśroṇi na dharmaphalakāraṇāt। āgamānanatikramya satāṃ vṛttamavekṣya ca ॥ dharma eva manaḥ kṛṣṇe svabhāvāccaiva me dhṛtam ॥3-32-4॥
[धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - duty; righteousness; चरामि (carāmi) - I practice; I follow; सुश्रोणि (suśroṇi) - O beautiful-hipped one; न (na) - not; धर्मफलकारणात् (dharmaphalakāraṇāt) - for the sake of the fruit of righteousness; आगमान् (āgamān) - scriptures; authorities; अनतिक्रम्य (anatikramya) - not transgressing; not violating; सतां (satām) - of the good; of the virtuous; वृत्तम् (vṛttam) - conduct; behavior; अवेक्ष्य (avekṣya) - having observed; considering; च (ca) - and; धर्म (dharma) - duty; righteousness; एव (eva) - only; indeed; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - O Kṛṣṇā; O dark-complexioned one; स्वभावात् (svabhāvāt) - from nature; by disposition; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - only; indeed; मे (me) - my; धृतम् (dhṛtam) - held; fixed;]
(I practice duty, O beautiful-hipped one, not for the sake of the fruit of righteousness; not transgressing the scriptures, having observed the conduct of the virtuous and; duty only, O Kṛṣṇā, my mind is held by nature and indeed.)
O beautiful-hipped one, I practice righteousness not for the sake of its reward; without transgressing the scriptures and having observed the conduct of the virtuous, my mind is fixed on duty alone, O Kṛṣṇā, by nature and indeed. (3-32-4)
न धर्मफलमाप्नोति यो धर्मं दोग्धुमिच्छति। यश्चैनं शङ्कते कृत्वा नास्तिक्यात्पापचेतनः ॥३-३२-५॥
na dharmaphalamāpnoti yo dharmaṃ dogdhumicchati। yaś cainaṃ śaṅkate kṛtvā nāstikyātpāpacetanaḥ ॥3-32-5॥
[न (na) - not; धर्मफलम् (dharmaphalam) - fruit of dharma; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - attains; यः (yaḥ) - who; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - dharma; दोग्धुम् (dogdhum) - to milk; इच्छति (icchati) - desires; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - this; शङ्कते (śaṅkate) - doubts; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; नास्तिक्यात् (nāstikyāt) - from atheism; पापचेतनः (pāpacetanaḥ) - one with sinful mind;]
(Not the fruit of dharma attains who dharma to milk desires; who and this doubts having done from atheism one with sinful mind;)
He does not attain the fruit of dharma who desires to exploit dharma; and he who, having done so, doubts it out of atheism, is of sinful mind. (3-32-5)
अतिवादान्मदाच्चैव मा धर्ममतिशङ्किथाः। धर्मातिशङ्की पुरुषस्तिर्यग्गतिपरायणः ॥३-३२-६॥
ativādān madāc caiva mā dharmam atiśaṅkithāḥ। dharmātiśaṅkī puruṣas tiryaggatiparāyaṇaḥ ॥3-32-6॥
[अतिवादात् (ativādāt) - from excessive speech; मदात् (madāt) - from pride; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मा (mā) - do not; धर्मम् (dharmam) - righteousness; अतिशङ्किथाः (atiśaṅkithāḥ) - doubt; धर्मातिशङ्की (dharmātiśaṅkī) - one who doubts righteousness; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; तिर्यग्गति (tiryaggati) - animal path; परायणः (parāyaṇaḥ) - devoted to;]
(From excessive speech, from pride and indeed, do not doubt righteousness; one who doubts righteousness, a man, devoted to the animal path.)
Do not doubt righteousness because of excessive speech or pride; a man who doubts righteousness is destined for the path of animals. (3-32-6)
धर्मो यस्यातिशङ्क्यः स्यादार्षं वा दुर्बलात्मनः। वेदाच्छूद्र इवापेयात्स लोकादजरामरात् ॥३-३२-७॥
dharmo yasyātiśaṅkyaḥ syād ārṣaṃ vā durbalātmanaḥ। vedāc chūdra ivāpeyāt sa lokād ajarāmarāt ॥3-32-7॥
[धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - law; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; अतिशङ्क्यः (atiśaṅkyaḥ) - very doubtful; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; आर्षम् (ārṣam) - of the ṛṣis; वा (vā) - or; दुर्बलात्मनः (durbalātmanaḥ) - of one with weak self; वेदात् (vedāt) - from the Veda; शूद्रः (śūdraḥ) - a śūdra; इव (iva) - like; अपेयात् (apeyāt) - should depart; सः (saḥ) - he; लोकात् (lokāt) - from the world; अजरामरात् (ajarāmarāt) - from the undecaying and immortal;]
(Law of whom is very doubtful, may be of the ṛṣis or of one with weak self; from the Veda, a śūdra like, should depart he from the world of the undecaying and immortal.)
If a person's law is very doubtful, whether it is of the ṛṣis or of one with a weak self, then like a śūdra from the Veda, he should be excluded from the world of the undecaying and immortal. (3-32-7)
वेदाध्यायी धर्मपरः कुले जातो यशस्विनि। स्थविरेषु स योक्तव्यो राजभिर्धर्मचारिभिः ॥३-३२-८॥
vedādhyāyī dharmaparaḥ kule jāto yaśasvini. sthavireṣu sa yoktavyo rājabhirdharmacāribhiḥ ॥3-32-8॥
[वेदाध्यायी (vedādhyāyī) - one who studies the Vedas; धर्मपरः (dharmaparaḥ) - devoted to dharma; कुले (kule) - in a family; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; यशस्विनि (yaśasvini) - O illustrious one; स्थविरेषु (sthavireṣu) - among the elders; स (sa) - he; योक्तव्यः (yoktavyaḥ) - should be employed; राजभिः (rājabhiḥ) - by kings; धर्मचारिभिः (dharmacāribhiḥ) - by those who practice dharma;]
(One who studies the Vedas, devoted to dharma, born in a family, O illustrious one, among the elders, he should be employed by kings who practice dharma.)
O illustrious one, a person who studies the Vedas, is devoted to dharma, and is born in a good family, should be appointed among the elders by righteous kings. (3-32-8)
पापीयान्हि स शूद्रेभ्यस्तस्करेभ्यो विशेषतः। शास्त्रातिगो मन्दबुद्धिर्यो धर्ममतिशङ्कते ॥३-३२-९॥
pāpīyān hi sa śūdrebhyaḥ taskarebhyaḥ viśeṣataḥ। śāstrātigo mandabuddhir yo dharmam atiśaṅkate ॥3-32-9॥
[पापीयान् (pāpīyān) - more sinful; हि (hi) - indeed; स (sa) - he; शूद्रेभ्यः (śūdrebhyaḥ) - than the śūdras; तस्करेभ्यः (taskarebhyaḥ) - than the thieves; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; शास्त्रातिगः (śāstrātigaḥ) - one who transgresses the śāstra; मन्दबुद्धिः (mandabuddhiḥ) - of dull intellect; यः (yaḥ) - who; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; अतिशङ्कते (atiśaṅkate) - doubts excessively;]
(More sinful indeed he than the śūdras, than the thieves, especially; one who transgresses the śāstra, of dull intellect, who excessively doubts dharma.)
He who, with a dull intellect, transgresses the śāstra and excessively doubts dharma is indeed more sinful than even the śūdras and especially the thieves. (3-32-9)
प्रत्यक्षं हि त्वया दृष्ट ऋषिर्गच्छन्महातपाः। मार्कण्डेयोऽप्रमेयात्मा धर्मेण चिरजीविताम् ॥३-३२-१०॥
pratyakṣaṃ hi tvayā dṛṣṭa ṛṣir gacchan mahātapāḥ। mārkaṇḍeyo'prameyātmā dharmeṇa cirajīvitām ॥3-32-10॥
[प्रत्यक्षम् (pratyakṣam) - directly; before the eyes; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; गच्छन् (gacchan) - going; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic; मार्कण्डेयः (mārkaṇḍeyaḥ) - Markandeya; अप्रमेयात्मा (aprameyātmā) - of immeasurable soul; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by righteousness; चिरजीविताम् (cirajīvitām) - long life;]
(Directly indeed by you seen the sage going, the great ascetic Markandeya, of immeasurable soul, by righteousness (attained) long life.)
You have directly seen the sage going, the great ascetic Markandeya, whose soul is immeasurable, who by righteousness has attained long life. (3-32-10)
व्यासो वसिष्ठो मैत्रेयो नारदो लोमशः शुकः। अन्ये च ऋषयः सिद्धा धर्मेणैव सुचेतसः ॥३-३२-११॥
vyāso vasiṣṭho maitreyo nārado lomaśaḥ śukaḥ। anye ca ṛṣayaḥ siddhā dharmeṇaiva sucetasaḥ ॥3-32-11॥
[व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; वसिष्ठः (vasiṣṭhaḥ) - Vasiṣṭha; मैत्रेयः (maitreyaḥ) - Maitreya; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; लोमशः (lomaśaḥ) - Lomaśa; शुकः (śukaḥ) - Śuka; अन्ये (anye) - others; च (ca) - and; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; सिद्धाः (siddhāḥ) - perfected ones; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by dharma; एव (eva) - indeed; सुचेतसः (sucetasaḥ) - of good intellect;]
(Vyāsa, Vasiṣṭha, Maitreya, Nārada, Lomaśa, Śuka, others and sages, perfected ones, by dharma indeed, of good intellect.)
Vyāsa, Vasiṣṭha, Maitreya, Nārada, Lomaśa, Śuka, and other sages who are perfected and of good intellect by dharma. (3-32-11)
प्रत्यक्षं पश्यसि ह्येतान्दिव्ययोगसमन्वितान्। शापानुग्रहणे शक्तान्देवैरपि गरीयसः ॥३-३२-१२॥
pratyakṣaṃ paśyasi hy etān divya-yoga-samanvitān। śāpānugrahaṇe śaktān devair api garīyasaḥ ॥3-32-12॥
[प्रत्यक्षम् (pratyakṣam) - directly; visibly; before the eyes; पश्यसि (paśyasi) - you see; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; एतान् (etān) - these; दिव्य (divya) - divine; योग (yoga) - union; connection; समन्वितान् (samanvitān) - endowed with; possessed of; शाप (śāpa) - curse; अनुग्रहणे (anugrahaṇe) - in granting favor; in bestowing grace; शक्तान् (śaktān) - capable; able; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; अपि (api) - even; also; गरीयसः (garīyasaḥ) - greater; more powerful;]
(Directly you see indeed these endowed with divine union, capable in curse and granting favor, greater even than the gods.)
You see directly these beings endowed with divine powers, who are capable of both cursing and granting favor, and who are even greater than the gods. (3-32-12)
एते हि धर्ममेवादौ वर्णयन्ति सदा मम। कर्तव्यममरप्रख्याः प्रत्यक्षागमबुद्धयः ॥३-३२-१३॥
ete hi dharmam eva ādau varṇayanti sadā mama। kartavyam amaraprakhyāḥ pratyakṣāgamabuddhayaḥ ॥3-32-13॥
[एते (ete) - these; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मम् (dharmam) - duty; एव (eva) - only; आदौ (ādau) - at the beginning; वर्णयन्ति (varṇayanti) - describe; सदा (sadā) - always; मम (mama) - my; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - duty to be done; अमरप्रख्याः (amaraprakhyāḥ) - those resembling immortals; प्रत्यक्ष (pratyakṣa) - direct perception; आगम (āgama) - scripture; बुद्धयः (buddhayaḥ) - intellects;]
(These indeed only duty at the beginning describe always my duty to be done those resembling immortals direct perception scripture intellects.)
These, indeed, always describe only duty at the beginning as my duty to be done, those whose intellects are like immortals, based on direct perception and scripture. (3-32-13)
अतो नार्हसि कल्याणि धातारं धर्ममेव च। रजोमूढेन मनसा क्षेप्तुं शङ्कितुमेव च ॥३-३२-१४॥
ato nārhasi kalyāṇi dhātāraṃ dharmameva ca। rajomūḍhena manasā kṣeptuṃ śaṅkitumeva ca ॥3-32-14॥
[अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; न (na) - not; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one; धातारम् (dhātāram) - the creator; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; रजःमूढेन (rajaḥmūḍhena) - by one deluded by passion; मनसा (manasā) - with mind; क्षेप्तुम् (kṣeptum) - to blame; शङ्कितुम् (śaṅkitum) - to doubt; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(Therefore, you ought not, O auspicious one, to blame or to doubt the creator and dharma, indeed, by a mind deluded by passion, and indeed.)

धर्मातिशङ्की नान्यस्मिन्प्रमाणमधिगच्छति। आत्मप्रमाण उन्नद्धः श्रेयसो ह्यवमन्यकः ॥३-३२-१५॥
dharmātiśaṅkī nānyasmin pramāṇam adhigacchati। ātmapramāṇa unnaddhaḥ śreyaso hy avamanyakāḥ ॥3-32-15॥
[धर्मातिशङ्की (dharmātiśaṅkī) - one who doubts dharma; न (na) - not; अन्यस्मिन् (anyasmin) - in another; प्रमाणम् (pramāṇam) - authority; अधिगच्छति (adhigacchati) - attains; आत्मप्रमाण (ātmapramāṇa) - self-authoritative; उन्नद्धः (unnaddhaḥ) - arrogant; श्रेयसः (śreyasaḥ) - of the superior; हि (hi) - indeed; अवमन्यकः (avamanyakāḥ) - despisers;]
(One who doubts dharma does not attain authority in another; the self-authoritative, arrogant, indeed despisers of the superior.)
One who doubts dharma does not accept any other authority; those who are self-authoritative and arrogant indeed despise what is superior. (3-32-15)
इन्द्रियप्रीतिसम्बद्धं यदिदं लोकसाक्षिकम्। एतावान्मन्यते बालो मोहमन्यत्र गच्छति ॥३-३२-१६॥
indriyaprītisambaddhaṃ yad idaṃ lokasākṣikam। etāvān manyate bālo moham anyatra gacchati ॥3-32-16॥
[इन्द्रिय (indriya) - sense; प्रीति (prīti) - pleasure; सम्बद्धं (sambaddhaṃ) - connected; यत् (yat) - which; इदं (idaṃ) - this; लोक (loka) - world; साक्षिकम् (sākṣikam) - witnessed; एतावान् (etāvān) - so much; मन्यते (manyate) - thinks; बालः (bālaḥ) - child; मोहम् (moham) - delusion; अन्यत्र (anyatra) - elsewhere; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(That which is connected to sense pleasure, this, witnessed by the world; so much thinks the child, delusion goes elsewhere.)

प्रायश्चित्तं न तस्यास्ति यो धर्ममतिशङ्कते। ध्यायन्स कृपणः पापो न लोकान्प्रतिपद्यते ॥३-३२-१७॥
prāyaścittaṃ na tasyāsti yo dharmamatiśaṅkate। dhyāyans kṛpaṇaḥ pāpo na lokān pratipadyate ॥3-32-17॥
[प्रायश्चित्तं (prāyaścittam) - expiation; न (na) - not; तस्य (tasya) - for him; अस्ति (asti) - is; यः (yaḥ) - who; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; अति-शङ्कते (ati-śaṅkate) - excessively doubts; ध्यायन् (dhyāyan) - meditating; कृपणः (kṛpaṇaḥ) - miserable; पापः (pāpaḥ) - sinful; न (na) - not; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; प्रतिपद्यते (pratipadyate) - attains;]
(Expiation not for him is who excessively doubts dharma. Meditating, the miserable sinful one does not attain worlds.)
There is no expiation for one who excessively doubts dharma. Meditating, the miserable and sinful person does not attain the worlds. (3-32-17)
प्रमाणान्यतिवृत्तो हि वेदशास्त्रार्थनिन्दकः। कामलोभानुगो मूढो नरकं प्रतिपद्यते ॥३-३२-१८॥
pramāṇānyativṛtto hi vedaśāstrārthanindakāḥ। kāmalobhānugo mūḍho narakaṃ pratipadyate ॥3-32-18॥
[प्रमाणानि (pramāṇāni) - authorities; अतिवृत्तः (ativṛttaḥ) - one who has transgressed; हि (hi) - indeed; वेद (veda) - Veda; शास्त्र (śāstra) - scripture; अर्थ (artha) - meaning; निन्दकः (nindakaḥ) - reviler; काम (kāma) - desire; लोभ (lobha) - greed; अनुगः (anugaḥ) - follower; मूढः (mūḍhaḥ) - deluded; नरकम् (narakam) - hell; प्रतिपद्यते (pratipadyate) - attains;]
(One who has transgressed authorities indeed, reviler of the meaning of Veda and scripture, follower of desire and greed, deluded, attains hell.)
Indeed, one who transgresses authorities, reviles the meaning of the Vedas and scriptures, and is deluded by following desire and greed, attains hell. (3-32-18)
यस्तु नित्यं कृतमतिर्धर्ममेवाभिपद्यते। अशङ्कमानः कल्याणि सोऽमुत्रानन्त्यमश्नुते ॥३-३२-१९॥
yastu nityaṃ kṛtamatiḥ dharmam eva abhipadyate। aśaṅkāmānaḥ kalyāṇi saḥ amutra anantyam aśnute ॥3-32-19॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; कृतमति: (kṛtamatiḥ) - one whose mind is resolved; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; एव (eva) - only; अभिपद्यते (abhipadyate) - attains; अशङ्कमानः (aśaṅkāmānaḥ) - not doubting; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one; सः (saḥ) - he; अमुत्र (amutra) - there (in the other world); अनन्त्यम् (anantyam) - endless (result); अश्नुते (aśnute) - obtains;]
(But who always, with resolved mind, attains only dharma, not doubting, O auspicious one, he there obtains endless (result).)
But he who always, with a resolute mind, pursues only dharma without any doubt, O auspicious one, attains endless results in the other world. (3-32-19)
आर्षं प्रमाणमुत्क्रम्य धर्मानपरिपालयन्। सर्वशास्त्रातिगो मूढः शं जन्मसु न विन्दति ॥३-३२-२०॥
ārṣaṃ pramāṇam utkramya dharmān aparipālayan। sarvaśāstrātigo mūḍhaḥ śaṃ janmasu na vindati ॥3-32-20॥

(Transgressing the authority of the ṛṣis, not observing dharmas, one who goes beyond all śāstras, the deluded does not find auspiciousness in births.)
A deluded person who transgresses the authority of the ṛṣis and does not observe dharmas, going beyond all śāstras, does not find auspiciousness in any of his births. (3-32-20)
शिष्टैराचरितं धर्मं कृष्णे मा स्मातिशङ्किथाः। पुराणमृषिभिः प्रोक्तं सर्वज्ञैः सर्वदर्शिभिः ॥३-३२-२१॥
śiṣṭair ācaritaṃ dharmaṃ kṛṣṇe mā smātiśaṅkithāḥ। purāṇam ṛṣibhiḥ proktaṃ sarvajñaiḥ sarvadarśibhiḥ ॥3-32-21॥

(By the virtuous ones practiced dharma, O Kṛṣṇa, do not indeed doubt excessively. Ancient, by sages spoken, by the all-knowing, by the all-seeing.)
O Kṛṣṇa, do not excessively doubt the dharma practiced by the virtuous; it is ancient, spoken by sages, by those who are all-knowing and all-seeing. (3-32-21)
धर्म एव प्लवो नान्यः स्वर्गं द्रौपदि गच्छताम्। सैव नौः सागरस्येव वणिजः पारमृच्छतः ॥३-३२-२२॥
dharma eva plavo nānyaḥ svargaṃ draupadi gacchatām। saiva nauḥ sāgarasyeva vaṇijaḥ pāram ṛcchataḥ ॥3-32-22॥
[धर्म (dharma) - righteousness; एव (eva) - indeed; प्लवः (plavaḥ) - raft; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; द्रौपदि (draupadi) - O Draupadi; गच्छताम् (gacchatām) - for those who go; सः (saḥ) - that; एव (eva) - indeed; नौः (nauḥ) - boat; सागरस्य (sāgarasya) - of the ocean; इव (iva) - like; वणिजः (vaṇijaḥ) - of merchants; पारम् (pāram) - to the far shore; ऋच्छतः (ṛcchataḥ) - desiring to reach;]
(Righteousness indeed is the raft, not any other, to heaven, O Draupadi, for those who go; that indeed is like the boat of the ocean for merchants desiring to reach the far shore.)
O Draupadi, righteousness alone is the raft, and there is no other, for those who seek to reach heaven; just as a boat is for merchants wishing to cross the ocean. (3-32-22)
अफालो यदि धर्मः स्याच्चरितो धर्मचारिभिः। अप्रतिष्ठे तमस्येतज्जगन्मज्जेदनिन्दिते ॥३-३२-२३॥
aphālo yadi dharmaḥ syāc carito dharmacāribhiḥ। apratiṣṭhe tamasy etaj jagan majjed anindite ॥3-32-23॥
[अफालः (aphālaḥ) - fruitless; यदि (yadi) - if; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; चरितः (caritaḥ) - practiced; धर्मचारिभिः (dharmacāribhiḥ) - by those who follow dharma; अप्रतिष्ठे (apratiṣṭhe) - in that which is without foundation; तमसि (tamasi) - in darkness; एतत् (etat) - this; जगत् (jagat) - world; मज्जेत् (majjet) - would sink; अनिन्दिते (anindite) - O blameless one;]
(If dharma practiced by those who follow dharma would be fruitless, O blameless one, then this world would sink in darkness, in that which is without foundation.)
O blameless one, if the dharma practiced by the righteous were fruitless, then this world would sink into darkness, lacking any foundation. (3-32-23)
निर्वाणं नाधिगच्छेयुर्जीवेयुः पशुजीविकाम्। विघातेनैव युज्येयुर्न चार्थं किञ्चिदाप्नुयुः ॥३-३२-२४॥
nirvāṇaṃ nādhigaccheyurjīveyuḥ paśujīvikām। vighātenaiva yujyeyurna cārthaṃ kiñcidāpnuyuḥ ॥3-32-24॥
[निर्वाणं (nirvāṇam) - extinction; liberation; न (na) - not; अधिगच्छेयुः (adhigaccheyuḥ) - would attain; जीवेयुः (jīveyuḥ) - would live; पशुजीविकाम् (paśujīvikām) - animal livelihood; विघातेन (vighātena) - by obstruction; एव (eva) - indeed; युज्येयुः (yujyeyuḥ) - would be engaged; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अर्थं (arthaṃ) - object; wealth; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; आप्नुयुः (āpnuyuḥ) - would obtain;]
(Extinction not would attain; would live animal livelihood; by obstruction indeed would be engaged; not and object anything would obtain;)
They would not attain extinction, but would live an animal livelihood; they would be engaged only in obstruction, and would not obtain any object at all. (3-32-24)
तपश्च ब्रह्मचर्यं च यज्ञः स्वाध्याय एव च। दानमार्जवमेतानि यदि स्युरफलानि वै ॥३-३२-२५॥
tapaś ca brahmacaryaṃ ca yajñaḥ svādhyāya eva ca। dānam ārjavam etāni yadi syur aphalāni vai ॥3-32-25॥
[तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; च (ca) - and; ब्रह्मचर्यं (brahmacaryaṃ) - celibacy; च (ca) - and; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; स्वाध्याय (svādhyāya) - self-study; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; दानम् (dānam) - charity; आर्जवम् (ārjavam) - straightforwardness; एतानि (etāni) - these; यदि (yadi) - if; स्युः (syuḥ) - are; अफलानि (aphalāni) - fruitless; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Austerity and celibacy and sacrifice, self-study indeed and charity, straightforwardness—these, if they are fruitless, indeed.)
If austerity, celibacy, sacrifice, self-study, charity, and straightforwardness are fruitless, indeed, then these are of no value. (3-32-25)
नाचरिष्यन्परे धर्मं परे परतरे च ये। विप्रलम्भोऽयमत्यन्तं यदि स्युरफलाः क्रियाः ॥३-३२-२६॥
nā cariṣyan pare dharmaṃ pare paratare ca ye। vipralambho' yam atyantaṃ yadi syur aphalāḥ kriyāḥ ॥3-32-26॥

(Not would perform others duty, others even more others and who; deception this completely; if would be fruitless actions.)
If actions were fruitless, then others, and even more others, would not perform their duty; this would be complete deception. (3-32-26)
ऋषयश्चैव देवाश्च गन्धर्वासुरराक्षसाः। ईश्वराः कस्य हेतोस्ते चरेयुर्धर्ममादृताः ॥३-३२-२७॥
ṛṣayaś caiva devāś ca gandharvāsurarākṣasāḥ। īśvarāḥ kasya hetos te careyur dharmam ādṛtāḥ॥3-32-27॥
[ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - seers; sages; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; च (ca) - and; गन्धर्व (gandharva) - gandharvas; असुर (asura) - asuras; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - rākṣasas; ईश्वराः (īśvarāḥ) - lords; rulers; कस्य (kasya) - of whom; whose; हेतोः (hetos) - for the reason; cause; ते (te) - they; चरेयुः (careyuḥ) - would practice; would follow; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; righteousness; आदृताः (ādṛtāḥ) - honoring; respecting;]
(Seers and indeed gods and gandharvas, asuras, rākṣasas, lords, for whose reason would they practice dharma, honoring it.)
For what reason would seers, gods, gandharvas, asuras, rākṣasas, and lords practice dharma with respect? (3-32-27)
फलदं त्विह विज्ञाय धातारं श्रेयसि ध्रुवे। धर्मं ते ह्याचरन्कृष्णे तद्धि धर्मसनातनम् ॥३-३२-२८॥
phaladaṁ tv iha vijñāya dhātāraṁ śreyasi dhruve। dharmaṁ te hy ācaran kṛṣṇe tad dhi dharmasanātanam ॥3-32-28॥
[फलदं (phaladam) - fruit-giving; तु (tu) - but; इह (iha) - here; विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having understood; धातारं (dhātāram) - the supporter; श्रेयसि (śreyasi) - in the highest good; ध्रुवे (dhruve) - in the eternal; धर्मं (dharmaṁ) - duty; ते (te) - your; हि (hi) - indeed; आचरन् (ācaran) - practicing; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - in Kṛṣṇa; तत् (tat) - that; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मसनातनम् (dharmasanātanam) - eternal dharma;]
(Fruit-giving but here having understood the supporter in the highest good, in the eternal, duty your indeed practicing in Kṛṣṇa, that indeed is the eternal dharma.)
But knowing here the fruit-giving supporter in the highest and eternal good, practicing your duty in Kṛṣṇa, that indeed is the eternal dharma. (3-32-28)
स चायं सफलो धर्मो न धर्मोऽफल उच्यते। दृश्यन्तेऽपि हि विद्यानां फलानि तपसां तथा ॥३-३२-२९॥
sa cāyaṃ saphalo dharmo na dharmo'phala ucyate। dṛśyante'pi hi vidyānāṃ phalāni tapasāṃ tathā ॥3-32-29॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; अयम् (ayam) - this; सफलः (saphalaḥ) - fruitful; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; न (na) - not; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; अफलः (aphalaḥ) - fruitless; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; अपि (api) - also; हि (hi) - indeed; विद्यानाम् (vidyānām) - of knowledges; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; तपसाम् (tapasām) - of austerities; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(He and this fruitful dharma, not dharma fruitless is said. Are seen also indeed of knowledges fruits of austerities likewise.)
He, and this dharma, is said to be fruitful; dharma is not said to be fruitless. Indeed, the fruits of knowledge and likewise of austerities are also seen. (3-32-29)
त्वय्येतद्वै विजानीहि जन्म कृष्णे यथा श्रुतम्। वेत्थ चापि यथा जातो धृष्टद्युम्नः प्रतापवान् ॥३-३२-३०॥
tvayy etad vai vijānīhi janma kṛṣṇe yathā śrutam। vettha cāpi yathā jāto dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ pratāpavān ॥3-32-30॥
[त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; एतत् (etat) - this; वै (vai) - indeed; विजानीहि (vijānīhi) - know; जन्म (janma) - birth; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - O Kṛṣṇa; यथा (yathā) - as; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; वेत्थ (vettha) - you know; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; यथा (yathā) - as; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; धृष्टद्युम्नः (dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ) - Dhṛṣṭadyumna; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - mighty;]
(In you, this indeed know, birth, O Kṛṣṇa, as heard. You know also as born Dhṛṣṭadyumna, mighty.)
O Kṛṣṇa, know this birth in you as it has been heard. You also know how the mighty Dhṛṣṭadyumna was born. (3-32-30)
एतावदेव पर्याप्तमुपमानं शुचिस्मिते। कर्मणां फलमस्तीति धीरोऽल्पेनापि तुष्यति ॥३-३२-३१॥
etāvad eva paryāptam upamānaṃ śucismite। karmaṇāṃ phalam astīti dhīro'lpena api tuṣyati ॥3-32-31॥
[एतावत् (etāvat) - so much; extent; एव (eva) - indeed; only; पर्याप्तम् (paryāptam) - sufficient; adequate; उपमानम् (upamānam) - comparison; example; शुचिस्मिते (śucismite) - O pure-smiling one; O one with a pure smile; कर्मणाम् (karmaṇām) - of actions; of deeds; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; result; अस्ति (asti) - is; exists; इति (iti) - thus; so; धीरः (dhīraḥ) - wise; steadfast; अल्पेन (alpena) - with little; by little; अपि (api) - even; also; तुष्यति (tuṣyati) - is satisfied; becomes content;]
(So much indeed is sufficient comparison, O pure-smiling one; the wise is satisfied even with little, thinking 'there is fruit of actions'.)
This much alone is a sufficient example, O pure-smiling one; the wise person, believing that actions have results, is content even with little. (3-32-31)
बहुनापि ह्यविद्वांसो नैव तुष्यन्त्यबुद्धयः। तेषां न धर्मजं किञ्चित्प्रेत्य शर्मास्ति कर्म वा ॥३-३२-३२॥
bahunāpi hyavidvāṁso naiva tuṣyantyabuddhayaḥ। teṣāṁ na dharmajaṁ kiñcitpretya śarmāsti karma vā ॥3-32-32॥
[बहुना (bahunā) - by much; अपि (api) - even; हि (hi) - indeed; अविद्वांसः (avidvāṁsaḥ) - ignorant ones; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - at all; तुष्यन्ति (tuṣyanti) - are satisfied; अबुद्धयः (abuddhayaḥ) - those without understanding; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; न (na) - not; धर्मजम् (dharmajam) - born of dharma; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; प्रेत्य (pretya) - after death; शर्म (śarma) - happiness; अस्ति (asti) - exists; कर्म (karma) - action; वा (vā) - or;]
(Even with much, indeed the ignorant ones are not at all satisfied, those without understanding; for them, not anything born of dharma, after death, happiness exists, action or.)
Even with much, indeed, the ignorant and unintelligent are never satisfied; for them, after death, there is neither happiness nor any result of action born of dharma. (3-32-32)
कर्मणामुत पुण्यानां पापानां च फलोदयः। प्रभवश्चाप्ययश्चैव देवगुह्यानि भामिनि ॥३-३२-३३॥
karmaṇām uta puṇyānāṃ pāpānāṃ ca phalodayaḥ। prabhavaś cāpyayaś caiva devaguhyāni bhāmini ॥3-32-33॥

(Of actions and also of meritorious (acts), of sinful (acts) and the arising of results; origin and dissolution and indeed divine secrets, O beautiful lady.)
O beautiful lady, the origin and dissolution of actions, the arising of results of meritorious and sinful acts, and the divine secrets (are explained here). (3-32-33)
नैतानि वेद यः कश्चिन्मुह्यन्त्यत्र प्रजा इमाः। रक्ष्याण्येतानि देवानां गूढमाया हि देवताः ॥३-३२-३४॥
naitāni veda yaḥ kaścin muhyanty atra prajā imāḥ। rakṣyāṇi etāni devānām gūḍhamāyā hi devatāḥ ॥3-32-34॥
[न (na) - not; एतानि (etāni) - these; वेद (veda) - knows; यः (yaḥ) - who; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; मुह्यन्ति (muhyanti) - are deluded; अत्र (atra) - here; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; इमाः (imāḥ) - these; रक्ष्याणि (rakṣyāṇi) - protections; एतानि (etāni) - these; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; गूढमाया (gūḍhamāyā) - hidden illusion; हि (hi) - indeed; देवताः (devatāḥ) - divinities;]
(Not these knows who anyone; are deluded here creatures these; protections these of the gods; hidden illusion indeed divinities;)
No one knows these; these creatures here are deluded; these protections of the gods are indeed the hidden illusion of the divinities. (3-32-34)
कृशाङ्गाः सुव्रताश्चैव तपसा दग्धकिल्बिषाः। प्रसन्नैर्मानसैर्युक्ताः पश्यन्त्येतानि वै द्विजाः ॥३-३२-३५॥
kṛśāṅgāḥ suvratāś caiva tapasā dagdhakilbiṣāḥ। prasannair mānasair yuktāḥ paśyanty etāni vai dvijāḥ॥3-32-35॥
[कृशाङ्गाः (kṛśāṅgāḥ) - thin-bodied ones; सुव्रताः (suvratāḥ) - well-disciplined ones; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; दग्धकिल्बिषाः (dagdhakilbiṣāḥ) - whose sins are burnt; प्रसन्नैः (prasannaiḥ) - with clear; मानसैः (mānasaiḥ) - minds; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - endowed; पश्यन्ति (paśyanti) - see; एतानि (etāni) - these; वै (vai) - indeed; द्विजाः (dvijāḥ) - twice-born ones;]
(Thin-bodied, well-disciplined and indeed, whose sins are burnt by austerity, endowed with clear minds, the twice-born indeed see these.)
Those twice-born who are thin-bodied, well-disciplined, whose sins have been burnt away by austerity, and who possess clear minds, indeed see these things. (3-32-35)
न फलादर्शनाद्धर्मः शङ्कितव्यो न देवताः। यष्टव्यं चाप्रमत्तेन दातव्यं चानसूयता ॥३-३२-३६॥
na phalādarśanāddharmaḥ śaṅkitavyo na devatāḥ। yaṣṭavyaṃ cāpramattena dātavyaṃ cānasūyatā ॥3-32-36॥
[न (na) - not; फल (phala) - fruit; अदर्शनात् (adarśanāt) - from non-seeing; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; शङ्कितव्यः (śaṅkitavyaḥ) - should be doubted; न (na) - not; देवताः (devatāḥ) - deities; यष्टव्यम् (yaṣṭavyam) - should be sacrificed; च (ca) - and; अप्रमत्तेन (apramattena) - by the unremiss; दातव्यम् (dātavyam) - should be given; च (ca) - and; अनसूयता (anasūyatā) - without envy;]
(Not from non-seeing of fruit should duty be doubted, not the deities. Sacrifice should be performed by the unremiss, and giving should be done without envy. (3-32-36))
One should not doubt duty because the results are not seen, nor should one doubt the deities. Sacrifice should be performed attentively, and charity should be given without envy. (3-32-36)
कर्मणां फलमस्तीति तथैतद्धर्म शाश्वतम्। ब्रह्मा प्रोवाच पुत्राणां यदृषिर्वेद कश्यपः ॥३-३२-३७॥
karmaṇāṃ phalam astīti tathaitad dharma śāśvatam। brahmā provāca putrāṇāṃ yad ṛṣir veda kaśyapaḥ ॥3-32-37॥
[कर्मणां (karmaṇāṃ) - of actions; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; अस्ति (asti) - is; इति (iti) - thus; तथा (tathā) - so; एतत् (etat) - this; धर्म (dharma) - law; शाश्वतम् (śāśvatam) - eternal; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; पुत्राणां (putrāṇāṃ) - to the sons; यत् (yat) - which; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; वेद (veda) - knows; कश्यपः (kaśyapaḥ) - Kaśyapa;]
(Of actions fruit is thus; so this law eternal. Brahmā said to the sons which sage knows Kaśyapa.)
The fruit of actions exists; thus, this is the eternal law. Brahmā spoke to his sons what the sage Kaśyapa knows. (3-32-37)
तस्मात्ते संशयः कृष्णे नीहार इव नश्यतु। व्यवस्य सर्वमस्तीति नास्तिक्यं भावमुत्सृज ॥३-३२-३८॥
tasmātte saṁśayaḥ kṛṣṇe nīhāra iva naśyatu। vyavasya sarvamastīti nāstikyaṁ bhāvamutsṛja ॥3-32-38॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; ते (te) - your; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - in Kṛṣṇa; नीहार (nīhāra) - mist; इव (iva) - like; नश्यतु (naśyatu) - let it perish; व्यवस्य (vyavasya) - having ascertained; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अस्ति (asti) - exists; इति (iti) - thus; नास्तिक्यं (nāstikyaṁ) - atheism; भावम् (bhāvam) - state; उत्सृज (utsṛja) - abandon;]
(Therefore, your doubt in Kṛṣṇa, like mist, let it perish. Having ascertained "all exists" thus, abandon the state of atheism. (3-32-38))
Therefore, let your doubt in Kṛṣṇa vanish like mist. Be certain that "all exists" and abandon any atheistic state of mind. (3-32-38)
ईश्वरं चापि भूतानां धातारं मा विचिक्षिपः। शिक्षस्वैनं नमस्वैनं मा ते भूद्बुद्धिरीदृशी ॥३-३२-३९॥
īśvaraṃ cāpi bhūtānāṃ dhātāraṃ mā vicikṣipaḥ। śikṣasvainam namasvainam mā te bhūdbuddhirīdṛśī ॥3-32-39॥

(Do not doubt the lord, the sustainer of beings, and also learn from him, bow to him; do not let your understanding be such.)

[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by grace; तद्भक्तः (tadbhaktaḥ) - that devotee; मर्त्यः (martyaḥ) - mortal; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; अमर्त्यताम् (amartyatām) - to immortality; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme; दैवतम् (daivatam) - divinity; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - in Kṛṣṇa; मा (mā) - do not; अतिवोचः (ativocaḥ) - speak excessively; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(Of whom by grace that devotee mortal goes to immortality. Supreme divinity in Kṛṣṇa do not speak excessively in any way. (3-32-40))
By whose grace, a devotee, though mortal, attains immortality. Do not ever speak excessively about the supreme divinity in Kṛṣṇa. (3-32-40)
