Pancharatra: Yudhisthira responds to Bhima, accepting his faults, but inability to take action now.

असंशयं भारत सत्यमेत; द्यन्मा तुदन्वाक्यशल्यैः क्षिणोषि। न त्वा विगर्हे प्रतिकूलमेत; न्ममानयाद्धि व्यसनं व आगात् ॥३-३५-१॥
asaṁśayaṁ bhārata satyameta; dyanmā tudanvākyashalyaiḥ kṣiṇoṣi. na tvā vigarhe pratikūlameta; nmamānayāddhi vyasanaṁ va āgāt ॥3-35-1॥

(Without doubt, O Bhārata, this is truth; indeed, do not, piercing with the barbs of words, you destroy. Not you I blame, contrary this; not by my bringing indeed misfortune or has come.)

अहं ह्यक्षानन्वपद्यं जिहीर्ष; न्राज्यं सराष्ट्रं धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रात्। तन्मा शठः कितवः प्रत्यदेवी; त्सुयोधनार्थं सुबलस्य पुत्रः ॥३-३५-२॥

(In the forest, years twelve, O prince; as you desire, known, O Ajātaśatru. Then another and unknown you should live; with all together with brothers in disguise. (3-35-8))
O prince, you should spend twelve years in the forest as you desire, O Ajātaśatru, in a manner known to all. Then, for another period, you should live in disguise, unknown, together with all your brothers. (3-35-8)
त्वां चेच्छ्रुत्वा तात तथा चरन्त; मवभोत्स्यन्ते भारतानां चराः स्म। अन्यांश्चरेथास्तावतोऽब्दांस्ततस्त्वं; निश्चित्य तत्प्रतिजानीहि पार्थ ॥३-३५-९॥
tvāṃ cecchrutvā tāta tathā caranta; mavabhotsyante bhāratānāṃ carāḥ sma. anyāṃścarethāstāvat o'bdāṃstatastvaṃ; niścitya tatpratijānīhi pārtha ॥3-35-9॥

(You if having heard, O dear one, thus acting, not will approve of the Bharatas spies indeed. Others you should act for so many years, then you, having ascertained that, promise, O son of Pritha.)
O dear one, if the spies of the Bharatas hear of you acting thus, they will not approve. Therefore, you should act among others for so many years; then, having ascertained that, make that promise, O son of Pritha. (3-35-9)
चरैश्चेन्नोऽविदितः कालमेतं; युक्तो राजन्मोहयित्वा मदीयान्। ब्रवीमि सत्यं कुरुसंसदीह; तवैव ता भारत पञ्च नद्यः ॥३-३५-१०॥
caraiś cenn o'aviditaḥ kālam etaṃ; yukto rājan mohayitvā madīyān। bravīmi satyaṃ kuru-saṃsadīha; tavaiva tā bhārata pañca nadyaḥ ॥3-35-10॥

(If by spies this time was unknown to us; having engaged, O king, and having deluded my people, I speak the truth here in the Kuru assembly; those five rivers are indeed yours, O Bhārata.)

वयं चैवं भ्रातरः सर्व एव; त्वया जिताः कालमपास्य भोगान्। वसेम इत्याह पुरा स राजा; मध्ये कुरूणां स मयोक्तस्तथेति ॥३-३५-११॥

(We and thus brothers all indeed; by you conquered, having set aside time, enjoyments. We may dwell, thus said formerly he king; in the midst of the Kurus, he by me addressed, thus so.)

तत्र द्यूतमभवन्नो जघन्यं; तस्मिञ्जिताः प्रव्रजिताश्च सर्वे। इत्थं च देशाननुसञ्चरामो; वनानि कृच्छ्राणि च कृच्छ्ररूपाः ॥३-३५-१२॥
tatra dyūtam abhavan no jaghanyaṃ; tasmiñ jitāḥ pravrajitāś ca sarve। itthaṃ ca deśān anusañcarāmo; vanāni kṛcchrāṇi ca kṛcchrarūpāḥ ॥3-35-12॥

(Suyodhana also not peace desiring; again he of anger control went after. Caused to be excited the Kurus and all; and who his some control followed. (3-35-13))

तं सन्धिमास्थाय सतां सकाशे; को नाम जह्यादिह राज्यहेतोः। आर्यस्य मन्ये मरणाद्गरीयो; यद्धर्ममुत्क्रम्य महीं प्रशिष्यात् ॥३-३५-१४॥
taṃ sandhim āsthāya satāṃ sakāśe; ko nāma jahyād iha rājyakhetoḥ. āryasya manye maraṇād garīyo; yad dharmam utkrāmya mahīṃ praśiṣyāt ॥3-35-14॥
[तं (taṃ) - that (agreement); सन्धिम् (sandhim) - treaty; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having resorted to; सताम् (satām) - of the virtuous; सकाशे (sakāśe) - in the presence; को (ko) - who; नाम (nāma) - indeed; जह्यात् (jahyāt) - would abandon; इह (iha) - here; राज्यहेतोः (rājyakhetoḥ) - for the sake of kingdom; आर्यस्य (āryasya) - of the noble; मnye (manye) - I think; मरणात् (maraṇāt) - than death; गरीयः (garīyaḥ) - more weighty; यत् (yat) - that which; धर्मम् (dharmam) - righteousness; उत्क्रम्य (utkrāmya) - transgressing; महीं (mahīṃ) - the earth; प्रशिष्यात् (praśiṣyāt) - would rule;]
(That treaty having resorted to in the presence of the virtuous; who indeed would abandon here for the sake of kingdom? Of the noble, I think, more weighty than death is that which, transgressing righteousness, would rule the earth.)

तदैव चेद्वीरकर्माकरिष्यो; यदा द्यूते परिघं पर्यमृक्षः। बाहू दिधक्षन्वारितः फल्गुनेन; किं दुष्कृतं भीम तदाभविष्यत् ॥३-३५-१५॥

(Then indeed, if you would have performed a heroic deed; when in the dice-game you would have seized the iron club. Arms desiring to burn, restrained by Phalguna; what evil deed, Bhima, would have happened then.)
If at that very moment you had performed a heroic act—when, during the dice-game, you seized the iron club, and your arms, burning with anger, were restrained by Phalguna—what evil, Bhima, would have occurred then? (3-35-15)
प्रागेव चैवं समयक्रियायाः; किं नाब्रवीः पौरुषमाविदानः। प्राप्तं तु कालं त्वभिपद्य पश्चा; त्किं मामिदानीमतिवेलमात्थ ॥३-३५-१६॥

(Before indeed and thus of the timely action; why did you not say, being aware of manliness? But having attained the time, you having reached afterwards; why do you now say to me excessively late?)
Why did you not speak of manliness before, when it was time for timely action? But now, after the time has passed and you have reached this point, why do you tell me now, when it is already too late? (3-35-16)
भूयोऽपि दुःखं मम भीमसेन; दूये विषस्येव रसं विदित्वा। यद्याज्ञसेनीं परिकृष्यमाणां; संदृश्य तत्क्षान्तमिति स्म भीम ॥३-३५-१७॥
bhūyo'pi duḥkhaṃ mama bhīmasena; dūye viṣasyeva rasaṃ viditvā. yadyājñasenīṃ parikṛṣyamāṇāṃ; sandṛśya tatkṣāntamiti sma bhīma ॥3-35-17॥

(Again also suffering my Bhīmasena; I am pained like of poison taste having known. If Draupadī being dragged having seen, that forgiven thus indeed Bhīma.)
Again, O Bhīmasena, my suffering increases; I am tormented as if having tasted poison. If, seeing Draupadī being dragged, that was forgiven—thus indeed, O Bhīma. (3-35-17)
न त्वद्य शक्यं भरतप्रवीर; कृत्वा यदुक्तं कुरुवीरमध्ये। कालं प्रतीक्षस्व सुखोदयस्य; पक्तिं फलानामिव बीजवापः ॥३-३५-१८॥

(Not today possible, O foremost of the Bharatas; having done what was said among the heroes of the Kurus. Wait for the time of the rise of happiness; like the sower of seeds (waits) for the ripening of fruits. (3-35-18))

यदा हि पूर्वं निकृतो निकृत्या; वैरं सपुष्पं सफलं विदित्वा। महागुणं हरति हि पौरुषेण; तदा वीरो जीवति जीवलोके ॥३-३५-१९॥
yadā hi pūrvaṃ nikṛto nikṛtyā; vairaṃ sapuṣpaṃ saphalaṃ viditvā. mahāguṇaṃ harati hi pauruṣeṇa; tadā vīro jīvati jīvaloke ॥3-35-19॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; हि (hi) - indeed; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - before; निकृतः (nikṛtaḥ) - deceived; निकृत्या (nikṛtyā) - by deceit; वैरम् (vairam) - enmity; सपुष्पम् (sapuṣpam) - with flower; सफलम् (saphalam) - with fruit; विदित्वा (viditvā) - having known; महागुणम् (mahāguṇam) - great merit; हरति (harati) - removes; हि (hi) - indeed; पौरुषेण (pauruṣeṇa) - by manliness; तदा (tadā) - then; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; जीवति (jīvati) - lives; जीवलोके (jīvaloke) - in the world of the living;]
(When indeed before deceived by deceit, enmity with flower with fruit having known, great merit removes indeed by manliness, then hero lives in the world of the living.)
When a person, having previously been deceived by deceit, recognizes that enmity has blossomed and borne fruit, and then removes that great merit by his manliness, then the hero truly lives in the world of the living. (3-35-19)
श्रियं च लोके लभते समग्रां; मन्ये चास्मै शत्रवः संनमन्ते। मित्राणि चैनमतिरागाद्भजन्ते; देवा इवेन्द्रमनुजीवन्ति चैनम् ॥३-३५-२०॥
śriyaṃ ca loke labhate samagrāṃ; manye cāsmai śatravaḥ saṃnamante. mitrāṇi cainam atirāgād bhajante; devā iva indram anujīvanti cainam ॥3-35-20॥
[श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; च (ca) - and; लोके (loke) - in the world; लभते (labhate) - obtains; समग्राम् (samagrām) - entire; मन्ये (manye) - I think; च (ca) - and; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; शत्रवः (śatravaḥ) - enemies; संनमन्ते (saṃnamante) - bow down; मित्राणि (mitrāṇi) - friends; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; अति-रागात् (ati-rāgāt) - from great affection; भजन्ते (bhajante) - serve; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; इव (iva) - like; इन्द्रम् (indram) - Indra; अनु-जीवन्ति (anu-jīvanti) - live after; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him;]
(He obtains entire prosperity in the world; I think also to him enemies bow down. Friends also serve him from great affection; the gods, like Indra, live after him also. (3-35-20))
He attains complete prosperity in the world; I believe even his enemies bow before him. His friends, out of deep affection, serve him; and the gods, just as they follow Indra, likewise follow him. (3-35-20)
मम प्रतिज्ञां च निबोध सत्यां; वृणे धर्मममृताज्जीविताच्च। राज्यं च पुत्राश्च यशो धनं च; सर्वं न सत्यस्य कलामुपैति ॥३-३५-२१॥
mama pratijñāṃ ca nibodha satyāṃ; vṛṇe dharmam amṛtāt jīvitāt ca. rājyaṃ ca putrāś ca yaśo dhanaṃ ca; sarvaṃ na satyasya kalām upaiti ॥3-35-21॥
[मम (mama) - my; प्रतिज्ञां (pratijñām) - vow; च (ca) - and; निबोध (nibodha) - know; सत्यां (satyām) - true; वृणे (vṛṇe) - I choose; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; अमृतात् (amṛtāt) - over immortality; जीवितात् (jīvitāt) - over life; च (ca) - and; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; च (ca) - and; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; च (ca) - and; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; च (ca) - and; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; न (na) - not; सत्यस्य (satyasya) - of truth; कलाम् (kalām) - a fraction; उपैति (upaiti) - attains;]
(My vow and know true; I choose dharma over immortality, over life and; kingdom and sons and fame, wealth and; all not of truth a fraction attains.)
Know my vow to be true; I choose dharma over immortality and life. Kingdom, sons, fame, and wealth—all these do not attain even a fraction of truth. (3-35-21)
