Pancharatra: Bhima again insists not to wait for 13 years, to wage a war.

सन्धिं कृत्वैव कालेन अन्तकेन पतत्रिणा। अनन्तेनाप्रमेयेन स्रोतसा सर्वहारिणा ॥३-३६-१॥
sandhiṃ kṛtvaiva kālena antakena patatriṇā। anantena aprameyena srotasā sarvahāriṇā ॥3-36-1॥
[सन्धिं (sandhim) - union; agreement; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; एव (eva) - indeed; just; कालेन (kālena) - by time; अन्तकेन (antakena) - by the ender; by death; पतत्रिणा (patatriṇā) - by the bird (Garuda); अनन्तेन (anantena) - by the infinite (Ananta); अप्रमेयेन (aprameyena) - by the immeasurable; स्रोतसा (srotasā) - by the current; by the stream; सर्वहारिणा (sarvahāriṇā) - by the all-taking; all-destroying;]
(Having indeed made an agreement, by time, by the ender (death), by the bird (Garuda), by the infinite (Ananta), by the immeasurable, by the current, by the all-taking (all-destroying).)
Having made an agreement, time, death, Garuda, Ananta, the immeasurable, the current, and the all-destroying force take everything away. (3-36-1)
प्रत्यक्षं मन्यसे कालं मर्त्यः सन्कालबन्धनः। फेनधर्मा महाराज फलधर्मा तथैव च ॥३-३६-२॥
pratyakṣaṃ manyase kālaṃ martyaḥ san kālabandhanaḥ। phenadharmā mahārāja phaladharmā tathaiva ca ॥3-36-2॥
[प्रत्यक्षम् (pratyakṣam) - directly perceived; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think; कालम् (kālam) - time; मर्त्यः (martyaḥ) - mortal; सन् (san) - being; कालबन्धनः (kālabandhanaḥ) - bound by time; फेनधर्मा (phenadharmā) - having the nature of foam; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; फलधर्मा (phaladharmā) - having the nature of fruit; तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; च (ca) - and;]
(You think time is directly perceived, the mortal being is bound by time, having the nature of foam, O great king, and having the nature of fruit just so.)
You consider time to be directly perceived; the mortal, being bound by time, is like foam, O great king, and also like fruit in the same way. (3-36-2)
निमेषादपि कौन्तेय यस्यायुरपचीयते। सूच्येवाञ्जनचूर्णस्य किमिति प्रतिपालयेत् ॥३-३६-३॥
nimeṣād api kaunteya yasyāyur apacīyate। sūcy evāñjanacūrṇasya kim iti pratipālayet ॥3-36-3॥
[निमेषात् (nimeṣāt) - from a blink; अपि (api) - even; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; यस्य (yasya) - whose; आयुः (āyuḥ) - lifespan; अपचीयते (apacīyate) - is diminished; सूचि (sūci) - needle; इव (iva) - like; अञ्जनचूर्णस्य (añjanacūrṇasya) - of collyrium powder; किम् (kim) - why; इति (iti) - thus; प्रतिपालयेत् (pratipālayet) - should wait for;]
(From even a blink, O son of Kunti, whose lifespan is diminished, like the powder of collyrium from a needle, why thus should one wait?)
O son of Kunti, since one's lifespan is diminished even by a blink, just as collyrium powder falls from a needle, why should one wait thus? (3-36-3)
यो नूनममितायुः स्यादथ वापि प्रमाणवित्। स कालं वै प्रतीक्षेत सर्वप्रत्यक्षदर्शिवान् ॥३-३६-४॥
yo nūnam amitāyuḥ syād atha vāpi pramāṇavit। sa kālaṃ vai pratīkṣeta sarvapratyakṣadarśivān ॥3-36-4॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; नूनम् (nūnam) - indeed; अमितायुः (amitāyuḥ) - of immeasurable life; स्यात् (syāt) - might be; अथ (atha) - or; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; प्रमाणवित् (pramāṇavit) - knower of measure; सः (saḥ) - he; कालम् (kālam) - time; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रतीक्षेत् (pratīkṣeta) - should wait; सर्वप्रत्यक्षदर्शिवान् (sarvapratyakṣadarśivān) - one who has seen all directly;]
(Who indeed might be of immeasurable life, or even a knower of measure, he should indeed wait for the time, being one who has seen all directly.)
Whoever might have an immeasurable lifespan, or even one who knows the measure, should indeed wait for the right time, being one who has directly witnessed everything. (3-36-4)
प्रतीक्षमाणान्कालो नः समा राजंस्त्रयोदश। आयुषोऽपचयं कृत्वा मरणायोपनेष्यति ॥३-३६-५॥
pratīkṣamāṇānkālo naḥ samā rājaṃstrayodaśa। āyuṣo'pacayaṃ kṛtvā maraṇāyopaneṣyati ॥3-36-5॥
[प्रतीक्षमाणान् (pratīkṣamāṇān) - waiting for; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; नः (naḥ) - our; समा (samā) - years; राजन् (rājan) - O king; त्रयोदश (trayodaśa) - thirteen; आयुषः (āyuṣaḥ) - of life; अपचयम् (apacayam) - diminution; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; मरणाय (maraṇāya) - to death; उपनेष्यति (upaneṣyati) - will lead;]
(Waiting for us, O king, time, having diminished thirteen years of life, will lead to death.)
O king, as we wait, time will reduce our lifespan by thirteen years and will eventually lead us to death. (3-36-5)
शरीरिणां हि मरणं शरीरे नित्यमाश्रितम्। प्रागेव मरणात्तस्माद्राज्यायैव घटामहे ॥३-३६-६॥
śarīriṇāṃ hi maraṇaṃ śarīre nityam āśritam। prāg eva maraṇāt tasmād rājyāya eva ghaṭāmahe ॥3-36-6॥
[शरीरिणाम् (śarīriṇām) - of embodied beings; हि (hi) - indeed; मरणम् (maraṇam) - death; शरीरे (śarīre) - in the body; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; आश्रितम् (āśritam) - residing; प्राक् (prāk) - before; एव (eva) - indeed; मरणात् (maraṇāt) - from death; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; राज्याय (rājyāya) - for the kingdom; एव (eva) - indeed; घटामहे (ghaṭāmahe) - we strive;]
(For embodied beings, indeed, death always resides in the body. Therefore, before death, indeed, we strive for the kingdom. (3-36-6))

यो न याति प्रसङ्ख्यानमस्पष्टो भूमिवर्धनः। अयातयित्वा वैराणि सोऽवसीदति गौरिव ॥३-३६-७॥
yo na yāti prasaṅkhyānam aspaṣṭo bhūmivardhanaḥ। ayātayitvā vairāṇi so'vasīdati gaur iva ॥3-36-7॥
[यो (yaḥ) - who; न (na) - not; याति (yāti) - goes; प्रसङ्ख्यानम् (prasaṅkhyānam) - clear discernment; अस्पष्टः (aspaṣṭaḥ) - unclear; भूमिवर्धनः (bhūmivardhanaḥ) - one who increases the ground; अयातयित्वा (ayātayitvā) - not having gone; वैराणि (vairāṇi) - enmities; सः (saḥ) - he; अवसीदति (avasīdati) - sinks; गौः (gauḥ) - cow; इव (iva) - like;]
(Who not goes to discernment, unclear, one who increases the ground; not having gone enmities, he sinks like a cow.)
He who does not attain discernment, who is unclear and only increases the ground, without resolving enmities, sinks like a cow. (3-36-7)
यो न यातयते वैरमल्पसत्त्वोद्यमः पुमान्। अफलं तस्य जन्माहं मन्ये दुर्जातजायिनः ॥३-३६-८॥
yo na yātayate vairam alpasattvodyamaḥ pumān। aphalaṃ tasya janmāhaṃ manye durjātajāyinaḥ ॥3-36-8॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; न (na) - not; यातयते (yātayate) - removes; वैरम् (vairam) - enmity; अल्पसत्त्वोद्यमः (alpasattvodyamaḥ) - of little strength and effort; पुमान् (pumān) - man; अफलम् (aphalam) - fruitless; तस्य (tasya) - his; जन्म (janma) - birth; अहम् (aham) - I; मन्ये (manye) - think; दुर्जातजायिनः (durjātajāyinaḥ) - born of a bad lineage;]
(Who does not remove enmity, a man of little strength and effort; fruitless is his birth, I think, born of a bad lineage.)
I consider the birth of a man who, being of little strength and effort, does not remove enmity, to be fruitless and as one born of a bad lineage. (3-36-8)
हैरण्यौ भवतो बाहू श्रुतिर्भवति पार्थिव। हत्वा द्विषन्तं सङ्ग्रामे भुक्त्वा बाह्वर्जितं वसु ॥३-३६-९॥
hairaṇyau bhavato bāhū śrutir bhavati pārthiva। hatvā dviṣantaṃ saṅgrāme bhuktvā bāhvarjitaṃ vasu ॥3-36-9॥
[हैरण्यौ (hairaṇyau) - golden; (dual); भवतो (bhavato) - of you; (dual); बाहू (bāhū) - arms; (dual); श्रुतिः (śrutiḥ) - fame; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; is; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; द्विषन्तम् (dviṣantam) - the enemy; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; भुक्त्वा (bhuktvā) - having enjoyed; बाह्व्-अर्जितम् (bāhv-arjitam) - acquired by the arms; वसु (vasu) - wealth;]
(Golden (are) your (two) arms; fame becomes (yours), O king. Having slain the enemy in battle, having enjoyed the wealth acquired by the arms.)
O king, your two arms are golden; fame will be yours. Having slain the enemy in battle, you will enjoy the wealth acquired by your arms. (3-36-9)
हत्वा चेत्पुरुषो राजन्निकर्तारमरिंदम। अह्नाय नरकं गच्छेत्स्वर्गेणास्य स संमितः ॥३-३६-१०॥
hatvā cet puruṣo rājan nikartāram ariṃdama। ahnāya narakaṃ gacchet svargeṇa asya sa saṃmitaḥ ॥3-36-10॥
[हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; चेत् (cet) - if; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; राजन् (rājan) - O king; निकर्तारम् (nikartāram) - the slayer; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - destroyer of enemies; अह्नाय (ahnāya) - for the sake of the day; नरकं (narakaṃ) - hell; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - would go; स्वर्गेण (svargeṇa) - with heaven; अस्य (asya) - of him; स (sa) - he; संमितः (saṃmitaḥ) - is considered;]
(Having killed, if a man, O king, the slayer, destroyer of enemies, for the sake of the day, would go to hell; with heaven, of him, he is considered.)
O king, if a man kills the slayer, O destroyer of enemies, for the sake of the day, he would go to hell; but he is considered as having attained heaven. (3-36-10)
अमर्षजो हि सन्तापः पावकाद्दीप्तिमत्तरः। येनाहमभिसन्तप्तो न नक्तं न दिवा शये ॥३-३६-११॥
amarṣajo hi santāpaḥ pāvakāddīptimattaraḥ। yenāhamabhisantapto na naktaṃ na divā śaye ॥3-36-11॥
[अमर्षजः (amarṣajaḥ) - born of impatience; हि (hi) - indeed; सन्तापः (santāpaḥ) - affliction; पावकात् (pāvakāt) - from fire; दीप्तिमत्तरः (dīptimattaraḥ) - more blazing; येन (yena) - by which; अहम् (aham) - I; अभिसन्तप्तः (abhisantaptaḥ) - tormented; न (na) - not; नक्तम् (naktam) - at night; न (na) - not; दिवा (divā) - by day; शये (śaye) - I lie down;]
(The affliction born of impatience indeed is more blazing than fire; by which I, tormented, do not lie down at night nor by day.)
The suffering born of impatience is truly more intense than fire; tormented by it, I am unable to sleep either at night or during the day. (3-36-11)
अयं च पार्थो बीभत्सुर्वरिष्ठो ज्याविकर्षणे। आस्ते परमसन्तप्तो नूनं सिंह इवाशये ॥३-३६-१२॥
ayaṃ ca pārtho bībhatsur variṣṭho jyāvikarṣaṇe। āste paramasantapto nūnaṃ siṃha ivāśaye ॥3-36-12॥
[अयं (ayaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - son of Pṛthā; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bībhatsu (Arjuna); वरिष्ठः (variṣṭhaḥ) - the most excellent; ज्या (jyā) - bowstring; विकर्षणे (vikarṣaṇe) - in drawing; आस्ते (āste) - sits; परम (parama) - extremely; सन्तप्तः (santaptaḥ) - tormented; नूनम् (nūnam) - surely; सिंह (siṃha) - lion; इव (iva) - like; आशये (āśaye) - in lair;]
(This and Pārtha, Bībhatsu, the most excellent in drawing the bowstring, sits extremely tormented, surely like a lion in its lair.)
And this Pārtha, Bībhatsu, the foremost in drawing the bowstring, sits here deeply tormented, surely like a lion in its den. (3-36-12)
योऽयमेकोऽभिमनुते सर्वाँल्लोके धनुर्भृतः। सोऽयमात्मजमूष्माणं महाहस्तीव यच्छति ॥३-३६-१३॥
yo'ayam-eko'bhimanute sarvāṁl-loke dhanurbhṛtaḥ। so'ayam-ātmajam-uṣmāṇaṁ mahāhastīva yacchati॥3-36-13॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; अभिमनुते (abhimanute) - considers; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; लोके (loke) - in the world; धनुर्भृतः (dhanurbhṛtaḥ) - archers; सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; आत्मजम् (ātmajam) - son; ऊष्माणम् (uṣmāṇam) - fiery; महाहस्तीव (mahāhastīva) - like a great elephant; यच्छति (yacchati) - sends;]
(Who this one considers all in the world archers; he this son fiery like a great elephant sends.)
He who considers all the archers in the world as one, this very person sends his own fiery son like a great elephant. (3-36-13)
नकुलः सहदेवश्च वृद्धा माता च वीरसूः। तवैव प्रियमिच्छन्त आसते जडमूकवत् ॥३-३६-१४॥
nakulaḥ sahadevaś ca vṛddhā mātā ca vīrasūḥ। tavaiva priyam icchanta āsate jaḍamūkavat ॥3-36-14॥
[नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakul; सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadev; च (ca) - and; वृद्धा (vṛddhā) - aged; माता (mātā) - mother; च (ca) - and; वीरसूः (vīrasūḥ) - mother of heroes; तव (tava) - your; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रियम् (priyam) - dear; इच्छन्तः (icchantaḥ) - desiring; आसते (āsate) - sit; जडमूकवत् (jaḍamūkavat) - like the dull and mute;]
(Nakul, Sahadev, and the aged mother, the mother of heroes, desiring only your dear (favor), sit like the dull and mute.)

सर्वे ते प्रियमिच्छन्ति बान्धवाः सह सृञ्जयैः। अहमेकोऽभिसन्तप्तो माता च प्रतिविन्ध्यतः ॥३-३६-१५॥
sarve te priyam icchanti bāndhavāḥ saha sṛñjayaiḥ। aham ekaḥ abhisantaptaḥ mātā ca prativindhyataḥ ॥3-36-15॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; ते (te) - they; प्रियम् (priyam) - dear; इच्छन्ति (icchanti) - desire; बान्धवाः (bāndhavāḥ) - relatives; सह (saha) - with; सृञ्जयैः (sṛñjayaiḥ) - with the Sṛñjayas; अहम् (aham) - I; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; अभिसन्तप्तः (abhisantaptaḥ) - greatly afflicted; माता (mātā) - mother; च (ca) - and; प्रतिविन्ध्यतः (prativindhyataḥ) - from Prativindhya;]
(All they desire what is dear, the relatives with the Sṛñjayas. I alone am greatly afflicted, and the mother from Prativindhya.)
All the relatives together with the Sṛñjayas desire what is dear; I alone am greatly afflicted, and so is the mother from Prativindhya. (3-36-15)
प्रियमेव तु सर्वेषां यद्ब्रवीम्युत किञ्चन। सर्वे ही व्यसनं प्राप्ताः सर्वे युद्धाभिनन्दिनः ॥३-३६-१६॥
priyam eva tu sarveṣāṃ yad bravīmy uta kiñcana। sarve hī vyasanaṃ prāptāḥ sarve yuddhābhinandinaḥ ॥3-36-16॥
[प्रियम् (priyam) - dear; loved; pleasant; एव (eva) - indeed; only; surely; तु (tu) - but; however; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; of everyone; यत् (yat) - which; that which; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; I say; उत (uta) - and; also; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; something; सर्वे (sarve) - all; everyone; ही (hī) - indeed; surely; व्यसनम् (vyasanam) - misfortune; calamity; adversity; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - have obtained; have reached; सर्वे (sarve) - all; everyone; युद्ध-अभिनन्दिनः (yuddhābhinandinaḥ) - delighting in battle; rejoicing in war;]
(Indeed, I speak only what is dear to all, and also anything; all have surely obtained misfortune, all are rejoicing in battle. (3-36-16))

नेतः पापीयसी काचिदापद्राजन्भविष्यति। यन्नो नीचैरल्पबलै राज्यमाच्छिद्य भुज्यते ॥३-३६-१७॥
netaḥ pāpīyasī kācid āpad rājan bhaviṣyati। yan no nīcair alpabalai rājyam ācchidya bhujyate ॥3-36-17॥
[नेतः (netaḥ) - led; (will be) पापीयसी (pāpīyasī) - more sinful; (feminine) काचित् (kācid) - some; (feminine) आपत् (āpat) - calamity; राजन् (rājan) - O king; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; यत् (yat) - because; नः (naḥ) - our; नीचैः (nīcaiḥ) - by the low (people); अल्पबलैः (alpabalaiḥ) - by those of little strength; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; आच्छिद्य (ācchidya) - having seized; भुज्यते (bhujyate) - is enjoyed;]
(Led (will be) more sinful some calamity, O king, will be; because our by the low (people), by those of little strength, kingdom having seized is enjoyed.)
O king, some more sinful calamity will occur, because our kingdom, having been seized by low and weak people, is being enjoyed. (3-36-17)
शीलदोषाद्घृणाविष्ट आनृशंस्यात्परन्तप। क्लेशांस्तितिक्षसे राजन्नान्यः कश्चित्प्रशंसति ॥३-३६-१८॥
śīladoṣādghṛṇāviṣṭa ānṛśaṁsyāt parantapa। kleśāṁs titikṣase rājan nānyaḥ kaścit praśaṁsati ॥3-36-18॥
[शील (śīla) - conduct; दोषात् (doṣāt) - from fault; घृणा (ghṛṇā) - compassion; आविष्ट (āviṣṭa) - possessed; आनृशंस्यात् (ānṛśaṁsyāt) - from compassion; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes; क्लेशान् (kleśān) - afflictions; तितिक्षसे (titikṣase) - you endure; राजन् (rājan) - O king; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; प्रशंसति (praśaṁsati) - praises;]
(O scorcher of foes, possessed by compassion from the fault of conduct, from compassion, you endure afflictions, O king; not another anyone praises.)
O Parantapa, O king, because of a fault in conduct and being possessed by compassion, you endure hardships out of compassion; no one else is praised for this. (3-36-18)
घृणी ब्राह्मणरूपोऽसि कथं क्षत्रे अजायथाः। अस्यां हि योनौ जायन्ते प्रायशः क्रूरबुद्धयः ॥३-३६-१९॥
ghṛṇī brāhmaṇarūpo'si kathaṃ kṣatre ajāyathāḥ। asyāṃ hi yonau jāyante prāyaśaḥ krūrabuddhayaḥ॥3-36-19॥
[घृणी (ghṛṇī) - one who is compassionate; ब्राह्मणरूपः (brāhmaṇarūpaḥ) - having the form of a brāhmaṇa; असि (asi) - you are; कथम् (katham) - how; क्षत्रे (kṣatre) - in the kṣatriya (caste); अजायथाः (ajāyathāḥ) - were you born; अस्याम् (asyām) - in this; हि (hi) - indeed; योनौ (yonau) - womb; जायन्ते (jāyante) - are born; प्रायशः (prāyaśaḥ) - mostly; क्रूरबुद्धयः (krūrabuddhayaḥ) - those with cruel intellect;]
(Compassionate, having the form of a brāhmaṇa, you are; how in the kṣatriya (caste) were you born? In this indeed womb are born mostly those with cruel intellect. (3-36-19))
You are compassionate and have the form of a brāhmaṇa; how were you born in the kṣatriya caste? For in this womb, mostly those with cruel intellect are born. (3-36-19)
अश्रौषीस्त्वं राजधर्मान्यथा वै मनुरब्रवीत्। क्रूरान्निकृतिसंयुक्तान्विहितानशमात्मकान् ॥३-३६-२०॥
aśrauṣīs tvaṃ rājadhamrān yathā vai manur abravīt। krūrān nikṛtisaṃyuktān vihitān aśamātmākān ॥3-36-20॥

(You have heard the kingly duties as indeed Manu spoke, cruel, joined with deceit, prescribed, of restless nature.)

(In duty, O tiger among men, why do you sit like a coiled snake? Endowed with intelligence, strength, learning, and noble birth and;)
O best of men, why do you remain inactive in your duty like a coiled snake? You are endowed with intelligence, strength, learning, and noble birth. (3-36-21)
तृणानां मुष्टिनैकेन हिमवन्तं तु पर्वतम्। छन्नमिच्छसि कौन्तेय योऽस्मान्संवर्तुमिच्छसि ॥३-३६-२२॥
tṛṇānāṃ muṣṭinaikena himavantaṃ tu parvatam। channam icchasi kaunteya yo'smān saṃvartum icchasi ॥3-36-22॥
[तृणानाम् (tṛṇānām) - of grasses; मुष्टिना (muṣṭinā) - with a fist; एकेन (ekena) - with one; हिमवन्तम् (himavantam) - Himavat (the Himalaya); तु (tu) - but; पर्वतम् (parvatam) - mountain; छन्नम् (channam) - to cover; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; यः (yaḥ) - who; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; संवर्तुम् (saṃvartum) - to destroy; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish;]
(Of grasses with a single fist Himavat but mountain to cover you wish O son of Kunti who us to destroy you wish.)
O son of Kunti, you wish to cover the mountain Himavat with a single fistful of grass; you who wish to destroy us. (3-36-22)
अज्ञातचर्या गूढेन पृथिव्यां विश्रुतेन च। दिवीव पार्थ सूर्येण न शक्या चरितुं त्वया ॥३-३६-२३॥
ajñātacaryā gūḍhena pṛthivyāṃ viśrutena ca। divīva pārtha sūryeṇa na śakyā carituṃ tvayā॥3-36-23॥
[अज्ञातचर्या (ajñātacaryā) - having conduct unknown; गूढेन (gūḍhena) - by one who is concealed; पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyāṃ) - on the earth; विश्रुतेन (viśrutena) - by one who is renowned; च (ca) - and; दिवि (divi) - in the sky; इव (iva) - like; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; सूर्येण (sūryeṇa) - by the sun; न (na) - not; शक्या (śakyā) - possible; चरितुं (carituṃ) - to be conducted; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(Having conduct unknown, by one who is concealed, on the earth, by one who is renowned and; in the sky, like, O son of Pṛthā, by the sun, not possible to be conducted by you.)
O Pārtha, just as the sun, being renowned, cannot move about in the sky unnoticed, so too you, being famous, cannot move about on earth in secrecy. (3-36-23)
बृहच्छाल इवानूपे शाखापुष्पपलाशवान्। हस्ती श्वेत इवाज्ञातः कथं जिष्णुश्चरिष्यति ॥३-३६-२४॥
bṛhacchāla ivānūpe śākhāpuṣpapalāśavān। hastī śveta ivājñātaḥ kathaṃ jiṣṇuś cariṣyati ॥3-36-24॥
[बृहच्छाल (bṛhacchāla) - great-shaded; (having) large shade; इव (iva) - like; as; अनूपे (anūpe) - in the marsh; in the wetland; शाखा (śākhā) - branch; पुष्प (puṣpa) - flower; पलाशवान् (palāśavān) - having leaves; leaf-bearing; हस्ती (hastī) - elephant; श्वेत (śveta) - white; इव (iva) - like; as; अज्ञातः (ajñātaḥ) - unknown; unnoticed; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; जिष्णुः (jiṣṇuḥ) - the victorious one; the conqueror; चरिष्यति (cariṣyati) - will move; will go;]
(Great-shaded like in the marsh, branch-flower-leaf-bearing; elephant white like unknown how the victorious one will move.)
How will the victorious one, like a great-shaded tree in the marsh, full of branches, flowers, and leaves, or like a white elephant unnoticed, move about? (3-36-24)
इमौ च सिंहसङ्काशौ भ्रातरौ सहितौ शिशू। नकुलः सहदेवश्च कथं पार्थ चरिष्यतः ॥३-३६-२५॥
imau ca siṃhasaṅkāśau bhrātarau sahitau śiśū। nakulaḥ sahadevaś ca kathaṃ pārtha cariṣyataḥ ॥3-36-25॥
[इमौ (imau) - these two; च (ca) - and; सिंहसङ्काशौ (siṃhasaṅkāśau) - lion-like in appearance; भ्रातरौ (bhrātarau) - brothers; सहितौ (sahitau) - together; शिशू (śiśū) - children; नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; च (ca) - and; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pritha; चरिष्यतः (cariṣyataḥ) - will live;]
(These two and lion-like in appearance brothers together children Nakula Sahadeva and how O son of Pritha will live.)
O Partha, how will these two brothers, Nakula and Sahadeva, who are like lions and still children, live together? (3-36-25)
पुण्यकीर्ती राजपुत्री द्रौपदी वीरसूरियम्। विश्रुता कथमज्ञाता कृष्णा पार्थ चरिष्यति ॥३-३६-२६॥
puṇyakīrtī rājaputrī draupadī vīrasūriyam। viśrutā kathamajñātā kṛṣṇā pārtha cariṣyati ॥3-36-26॥
[पुण्यकीर्ती (puṇyakīrtī) - of virtuous fame; राजपुत्री (rājaputrī) - princess; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; वीर (vīra) - hero; सूरियम् (sūriyam) - sun; विश्रुता (viśrutā) - well-known; कथम् (katham) - how; अज्ञाता (ajñātā) - unknown; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; चरिष्यति (cariṣyati) - will live;]
(Of virtuous fame princess Draupadī, hero sun, well-known, how unknown Kṛṣṇā, O Pārtha, will live.)
O Pārtha, how will Draupadī, the princess of virtuous fame, well-known as Kṛṣṇā, who is like a hero and the sun, live in obscurity? (3-36-26)
मां चापि राजञ्जानन्ति आकुमारमिमाः प्रजाः। अज्ञातचर्यां पश्यामि मेरोरिव निगूहनम् ॥३-३६-२७॥
māṃ cāpi rājan jānanti ākumāram imāḥ prajāḥ। ajñātacaryāṃ paśyāmi meror iva nigūhanam ॥3-36-27॥
[माम् (mām) - me; (accusative singular of aham) च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; राजन् (rājan) - O king; जानन्ति (jānanti) - know; (3rd person plural present of jñā) आकुमारम् (ākumāram) - from childhood; (ā + kumāra, ablative singular) इमाः (imāḥ) - these; (feminine plural) प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - subjects; people; अज्ञातचर्याम् (ajñātacaryām) - unknown conduct; secret life; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; मेरोः (meroḥ) - of Meru; (genitive singular of Meru) इव (iva) - like; as; निगूहनम् (nigūhanam) - concealment; hiding;]
(Me and also, O king, know from childhood these subjects; unknown conduct I see, of Meru like concealment.)
O king, these subjects know me from my childhood; I see my secret life as concealed as that of Meru. (3-36-27)
तथैव बहवोऽस्माभी राष्ट्रेभ्यो विप्रवासिताः। राजानो राजपुत्राश्च धृतराष्ट्रमनुव्रताः ॥३-३६-२८॥
tathaiva bahavo'smābhī rāṣṭrebhyo vipravāsitāḥ। rājāno rājaputrāś ca dhṛtarāṣṭramanuvratāḥ ॥3-36-28॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; राष्ट्रेभ्यः (rāṣṭrebhyaḥ) - from kingdoms; विप्रवासिताः (vipravāsitāḥ) - banished; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; राजपुत्राः (rājaputrāḥ) - princes; च (ca) - and; धृतराष्ट्रमनुव्रताः (dhṛtarāṣṭramanuvratāḥ) - devoted to Dhritarashtra;]
(In the same way, many by us from kingdoms banished; kings, princes and devoted to Dhritarashtra.)
In the same way, many kings and princes devoted to Dhritarashtra have also been banished from their kingdoms by us. (3-36-28)
न हि तेऽप्युपशाम्यन्ति निकृतानां निराकृताः। अवश्यं तैर्निकर्तव्यमस्माकं तत्प्रियैषिभिः ॥३-३६-२९॥
na hi te'pyupaśāmyanti nikṛtānāṃ nirākṛtāḥ। avaśyaṃ tairnikartavyamasmākaṃ tatpriyaiṣibhiḥ ॥3-36-29॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - they; अपि (api) - even; उपशाम्यन्ति (upaśāmyanti) - are pacified; निकृतानां (nikṛtānāṃ) - of the deceivers; निराकृताः (nirākṛtāḥ) - driven away; अवश्यं (avaśyam) - certainly; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; निकर्तव्यम् (nikartavyam) - must be cut off; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - of us; तत् (tat) - that; प्रियैषिभिः (priyaiṣibhiḥ) - by those seeking favor;]
(Not indeed they even are pacified, of the deceivers, driven away. Certainly by them must be cut off, of us, that, by those seeking favor.)
Indeed, even when the deceivers are driven away, they are not pacified. Certainly, those among us who seek their favor must be cut off by them. (3-36-29)
तेऽप्यस्मासु प्रयुञ्जीरन्प्रच्छन्नान्सुबहूञ्जनान्। आचक्षीरंश्च नो ज्ञात्वा तन्नः स्यात्सुमहद्भयम् ॥३-३६-३०॥
te'py asmāsu prayuñjīran pracchannān subahūñ janān। ācakṣīraṃś ca no jñātvā tan naḥ syāt sumahad bhayam ॥3-36-30॥
[ते (te) - they; अपि (api) - also; अस्मासु (asmāsu) - among us; प्रयुञ्जीरन् (prayuñjīran) - might employ; प्रच्छन्नान् (pracchannān) - hidden; सुबहून् (subahūn) - very many; जनान् (janān) - people; आचक्षीरन् (ācakṣīran) - might inform; च (ca) - and; नः (naḥ) - to us; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; तत् (tat) - that; नः (naḥ) - to us; स्यात् (syāt) - might be; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; भयम् (bhayam) - fear;]
(They also among us might employ hidden very many people; might inform and to us having known that to us might be very great fear;)
They too might employ many hidden people among us; if they come to know and inform about us, that could cause us very great fear. (3-36-30)
अस्माभिरुषिताः सम्यग्वने मासास्त्रयोदश। परिमाणेन तान्पश्य तावतः परिवत्सरान् ॥३-३६-३१॥
asmābhiruṣitāḥ samyagvane māsāstrayodaśa। parimāṇena tānpaśya tāvataḥ parivatsarān ॥3-36-31॥
[अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; उषिताः (uṣitāḥ) - dwelt; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; वने (vane) - in the forest; मासाः (māsāḥ) - months; त्रयोदश (trayodaśa) - thirteen; परिमाणेन (parimāṇena) - by measure; तान् (tān) - those; पश्य (paśya) - see; तावतः (tāvataḥ) - so many; परिवत्सरान् (parivatsarān) - years;]
(By us dwelt properly in the forest months thirteen. By measure those see so many years.)
We have properly spent thirteen months in the forest. By calculation, see how many years those amount to. (3-36-31)
अस्ति मासः प्रतिनिधिर्यथा प्राहुर्मनीषिणः। पूतिकानिव सोमस्य तथेदं क्रियतामिति ॥३-३६-३२॥
asti māsaḥ pratinidhiryathā prāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ। pūtikāniva somasya tathedaṃ kriyatāmiti ॥3-36-32॥
[अस्ति (asti) - is; exists; मासः (māsaḥ) - month; प्रतिनिधिः (pratinidhiḥ) - representative; substitute; यथा (yathā) - as; just as; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - they have said; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise; sages; पूतिकानि (pūtikāni) - substitutes; surrogates; इव (iva) - like; as; सोमस्य (somasya) - of Soma; तथा (tathā) - so; in that way; इदं (idaṃ) - this; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; इति (iti) - thus; so;]
(There is a month as a representative, as the wise have said; just as there are substitutes for Soma, so let this be done thus.)
There is a month that serves as a substitute, as the sages have said; just as there are surrogates for Soma, let this be done in the same way. (3-36-32)
अथ वानडुहे राजन्साधवे साधुवाहिने। सौहित्यदानादेकस्मादेनसः प्रतिमुच्यते ॥३-३६-३३॥
atha vānaḍuhe rājan sādhave sādhuvāhine। sauhityadānād ekasmād enasaḥ pratimucyate ॥3-36-33॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; वानडुहे (vānaḍuhe) - to the cowherd; राजन् (rājan) - O king; साधवे (sādhave) - to the virtuous one; साधुवाहिने (sādhuvāhine) - to the one who leads the good; सौहित्यदानात् (sauhityadānāt) - from the giving of friendship; एकस्मात् (ekasmāt) - from one; एनसः (enasaḥ) - from sin; प्रतिमुच्यते (pratimucyate) - is released; is freed;]
(Now, to the cowherd, O king, to the virtuous one, to the one who leads the good, from the giving of friendship, from one, from sin, is released.)
Now, O king, the cowherd, the virtuous one, and the leader of the good are freed from sin by a single act of giving friendship. (3-36-33)
तस्माच्छत्रुवधे राजन्क्रियतां निश्चयस्त्वया। क्षत्रियस्य तु सर्वस्य नान्यो धर्मोऽस्ति संयुगात् ॥३-३६-३४॥
tasmāc chatruvadhe rājan kriyatāṃ niścayas tvayā। kṣatriyasya tu sarvasya nānyo dharmo 'sti saṃyugāt ॥3-36-34॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; शत्रुवधे (śatruvadhe) - in the killing of the enemy; राजन् (rājan) - O king; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; निश्चयः (niścayaḥ) - decision; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; क्षत्रियस्य (kṣatriyasya) - of a kṣatriya; तु (tu) - but; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; अस्ति (asti) - exists; संयुगात् (saṃyugāt) - than battle;]
(Therefore, in the killing of the enemy, O king, let decision be made by you. For a kṣatriya, but, of all, no other duty exists than battle.)
Therefore, O king, resolve yourself to slay the enemy. For all kṣatriyas, there is no other duty than battle. (3-36-34)
