Lomaśa said.
धनञ्जयेन चाप्युक्तं यत्तच्छृणु युधिष्ठिर। युधिष्ठिरं भ्रातरं मे योजयेर्धर्म्यया श्रिया ॥०३-९०-१॥
dhanañjayena cāpy uktaṁ yat tac chṛṇu yudhiṣṭhira। yudhiṣṭhiraṁ bhrātaraṁ me yojayer dharmyayā śriyā ॥03-90-1॥
[धनञ्जयेन (dhanañjayena) - by Dhanañjaya; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; उक्तं (uktaṁ) - spoken; यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुणु (śṛṇu) - hear; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhiṣṭhira; युधिष्ठिरं (yudhiṣṭhiraṁ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; भ्रातरं (bhrātaraṁ) - brother; मे (me) - my; योजयेत् (yojayet) - should unite; धर्म्यया (dharmyayā) - with righteous; श्रिया (śriyā) - prosperity;]
(By Dhanañjaya also spoken which that hear, O Yudhiṣṭhira. Yudhiṣṭhira, brother my, should unite with righteous prosperity.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, also hear that which was spoken by Dhanañjaya. My brother Yudhiṣṭhira should be united with righteous prosperity. (03-90-1)
त्वं हि धर्मान्परान्वेत्थ तपांसि च तपोधन। श्रीमतां चापि जानासि राज्ञां धर्मं सनातनम् ॥०३-९०-२॥
tvaṃ hi dharmān parān vettha tapāṃsi ca tapodhana. śrīmatāṃ cāpi jānāsi rājñāṃ dharmaṃ sanātanam ॥03-90-2॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मान् (dharmān) - dharmas (righteous duties); परान् (parān) - supreme; वेत्थ (vettha) - know; तपांसि (tapāṃsi) - austerities; च (ca) - and; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O wealth of austerity; श्रीमताम् (śrīmatām) - of the prosperous; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; जानासि (jānāsi) - know; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of kings; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - dharma (duty); सनातनम् (sanātanam) - eternal;]
(You indeed supreme dharmas know, austerities and, O wealth of austerity; of the prosperous and also you know of kings the eternal dharma.)
You truly know the highest principles of dharma, the austerities, O ascetic; and you also know the eternal duty of kings and of the prosperous. (03-90-2)
स भवान्यत्परं वेद पावनं पुरुषान्प्रति। तेन संयोजयेथास्त्वं तीर्थपुण्येन पाण्डवम् ॥०३-९०-३॥
sa bhavān yat paraṁ veda pāvanaṁ puruṣān prati। tena saṁyojayethās tvaṁ tīrthapuṇyena pāṇḍavam॥03-90-3॥
[स (sa) - he; भवान् (bhavān) - you; यत्परम् (yat param) - that supreme; वेद (veda) - knows; पावनम् (pāvanam) - purifying; पुरुषान् प्रति (puruṣān prati) - towards persons; तेन (tena) - by that; संयोजयेथाः (saṁyojayethāḥ) - may you unite; त्वम् (tvam) - you; तीर्थपुण्येन (tīrthapuṇyena) - by the merit of pilgrimage; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - Pāṇḍava;]
(He, you, that supreme knows, purifying, towards persons. By that, may you unite, you, by the merit of pilgrimage, Pāṇḍava.)
You know that supreme, purifying path regarding people. Therefore, by the merit of pilgrimage, may you unite the Pāṇḍava. (03-90-3)
यथा तीर्थानि गच्छेत गाश्च दद्यात्स पार्थिवः। तथा सर्वात्मना कार्यमिति मां विजयोऽब्रवीत् ॥०३-९०-४॥
yathā tīrthāni gacchet gāś ca dadyāt sa pārthivaḥ। tathā sarvātmanā kāryam iti māṃ vijayaḥ abravīt॥03-90-4॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - holy places; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - one should go; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; च (ca) - and; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - one should give; सः (saḥ) - he; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king; तथा (tathā) - so; सर्वात्मना (sarvātmanā) - with all the self; कार्यं (kāryam) - should be done; इति (iti) - thus; माम् (mām) - to me; विजयः (vijayaḥ) - Vijaya; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Just as one should go to holy places, and the king should give cows; so, with all the self, it should be done — thus Vijaya said to me.)
Vijaya told me, "Just as one should visit holy places and a king should donate cows, so should everything be done wholeheartedly." (03-90-4)
भवता चानुगुप्तोऽसौ चरेत्तीर्थानि सर्वशः। रक्षोभ्यो रक्षितव्यश्च दुर्गेषु विषमेषु च ॥०३-९०-५॥
bhavatā cānugupto'sau caret tīrthāni sarvaśaḥ। rakṣobhyo rakṣitavyaś ca durgeṣu viṣameṣu ca॥03-90-5॥
[भवता (bhavatā) - by you; by your (protection); च (ca) - and; अनुगुप्तः (anuguptaḥ) - protected; असौ (asau) - he; चरेत् (caret) - should go; should proceed; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - fords; holy places; crossings; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way; all; रक्षोभ्यः (rakṣobhyaḥ) - from demons; from dangers; रक्षितव्यः (rakṣitavyaḥ) - should be protected; च (ca) - and; दुर्गेषु (durgeṣu) - in fortresses; among difficult places; विषमेषु (viṣameṣu) - in rugged places; in difficult terrains; च (ca) - and;]
(By you and protected, he should go to fords in every way; from demons he should be protected, and in fortresses and in rugged places also.)
He should proceed everywhere to the fords with your protection, and he must be guarded from demons both in forts and in difficult terrains. (03-90-5)
दधीच इव देवेन्द्रं यथा चाप्यङ्गिरा रविम्। तथा रक्षस्व कौन्तेयं राक्षसेभ्यो द्विजोत्तम ॥०३-९०-६॥
dadhīca iva devendraṃ yathā ca apyaṅgirā ravim। tathā rakṣasva kaunteyaṃ rākṣasebhyo dvijottama ॥03-90-6॥
[दधीच (dadhīca) - Dadhīca; (ancient sage known for self-sacrifice); इव (iva) - like; as; similar to; देवेन्द्रं (devendraṃ) - Indra; (king of the gods); यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner that; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; too; अङ्गिरा (aṅgirā) - Aṅgirā; (name of a sage); रविम् (ravim) - the Sun; the solar deity; तथा (tathā) - thus; in that way; रक्षस्व (rakṣasva) - protect; (imperative); कौन्तेयं (kaunteyaṃ) - Kunteya; (son of Kunti, Arjuna or Yudhisthira, contextually Arjuna); राक्षसेभ्यः (rākṣasebhyaḥ) - from the Rākṣasas; (demons); द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of the twice-born; (O foremost Brāhmaṇa);]
(Dadhīca like Indra as and also Aṅgirā the Sun, thus protect Kunteya from the Rākṣasas, O best of the twice-born.)
Just as Dadhīca protected Indra and Aṅgirā protected the Sun, so also, O best of the twice-born, protect the son of Kunti from the Rākṣasas. (03-90-6)
यातुधाना हि बहवो राक्षसाः पर्वतोपमाः। त्वयाभिगुप्तान्कौन्तेयान्नातिवर्तेयुरन्तिकात् ॥०३-९०-७॥
yātudhānā hi bahavo rākṣasāḥ parvatopamāḥ। tvayābhiguptānkauṃteyānnātivarteyurantikāt॥03-90-7॥
[यातुधानाः (yātudhānāḥ) - evil spirits; हि (hi) - indeed; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - rākṣasas; पर्वत-उपमाः (parvata-upamāḥ) - mountain-like; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अभिगुप्तान् (abhiguptān) - protected; कौन्तेयान् (kaunteyān) - the sons of Kunti; न (na) - not; अतिवर्तेयुः (ativarteyuḥ) - could surpass; अन्तिकात् (antikāt) - from near;]
(Evil spirits indeed many rākṣasas mountain-like; by you protected the sons of Kunti not could surpass from near.)
Indeed, many evil spirits, rākṣasas like mountains, could not approach or overcome the sons of Kunti when protected by you. (3-90-7)
सोऽहमिन्द्रस्य वचनान्नियोगादर्जुनस्य च। रक्षमाणो भयेभ्यस्त्वां चरिष्यामि त्वया सह ॥०३-९०-८॥
so'ham indrasya vacanān niyogād arjunasya ca। rakṣamāṇo bhayebhyas tvāṃ cariṣyāmi tvayā saha॥03-90-8॥
[सः (अहम्) (saḥ (aham)) - he (I); इन्द्रस्य (indrasya) - of Indra; वचनात् (vacanāt) - from the word; नियोगात् (niyogāt) - from the command; अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) - of Arjuna; च (ca) - and; रक्षमाणः (rakṣamāṇaḥ) - being protected; भयेभ्यः (bhayebhyaḥ) - from dangers; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; चरिष्यामि (cariṣyāmi) - I shall accompany; त्वया (tvayā) - with you; सह (saha) - together;]
(He (I), from the word of Indra and from the command of Arjuna, being protected from dangers, I shall accompany you together with you.)
Therefore, by the word of Indra and by the command of Arjuna, being protected from dangers, I will accompany you together with you. (03-90-8)
द्विस्तीर्थानि मया पूर्वं दृष्टानि कुरुनन्दन। इदं तृतीयं द्रक्ष्यामि तान्येव भवता सह ॥०३-९०-९॥
dvistīrthāni mayā pūrvaṃ dṛṣṭāni kurunandana। idaṃ tṛtīyaṃ drakṣyāmi tānyeva bhavatā saha ॥03-90-9॥
[द्वि (dvi) - two; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - sacred fords; मया (mayā) - by me; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - previously; दृष्टानि (dṛṣṭāni) - were seen; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O delight of the Kurus; इदं (idaṃ) - this; तृतीयं (tṛtīyaṃ) - third; द्रक्ष्यामि (drakṣyāmi) - I shall see; तानि (tāni) - those; एव (eva) - only; भवता (bhavatā) - with you; सह (saha) - together;]
(Two tīrthas by me previously were seen, O Kurunandana. This, the third, I shall see, those only with you together.)
O delight of the Kurus, I have already seen two holy places before; now I shall see this third one, those very (places), together with you. (03-90-9)
इयं राजर्षिभिर्याता पुण्यकृद्भिर्युधिष्ठिर। मन्वादिभिर्महाराज तीर्थयात्रा भयापहा ॥०३-९०-१०॥
iyaṃ rājarṣibhir yātā puṇyakṛdbhir yudhiṣṭhira। manvādibhir mahārāja tīrthayātrā bhayāpahā ॥03-90-10॥
[इयं (iyaṃ) - this; राजर्षिभिः (rājarṣibhiḥ) - by royal sages; याता (yātā) - undertaken; पुण्यकृत्भिः (puṇyakṛdbhiḥ) - by those who perform meritorious deeds; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhishthira; मन्वादिभिः (manvādibhiḥ) - by Manu and others; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; तीर्थयात्रा (tīrthayātrā) - pilgrimage; भयापहा (bhayāpahā) - remover of fear;]
(This pilgrimage undertaken by royal sages, by the doers of meritorious deeds, O Yudhishthira, by Manu and others, O great king, (is) remover of fear.)
O Yudhishthira, this pilgrimage, which removes fear, was undertaken by royal sages, by the doers of meritorious deeds, by Manu and others, O great king. (03-90-10)
नानृजुर्नाकृतात्मा च नावैद्यो न च पापकृत्। स्नाति तीर्थेषु कौरव्य न च वक्रमतिर्नरः ॥०३-९०-११॥
nānṛjur nākṛtātmā ca nāvaidyo na ca pāpakṛt। snāti tīrtheṣu kauravya na ca vakramatir naraḥ ॥03-90-11॥
[न (na) - not; अनृजुः (anṛjuḥ) - not straightforward/not honest; न (na) - not; अकृतात्मा (akṛtātmā) - undisciplined in self/uncontrolled; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; अवैद्यः (avaidyaḥ) - ignorant/one who does not know; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पापकृत् (pāpakṛt) - doer of evil; स्नाति (snāti) - bathes; तीर्थेषु (tīrtheṣu) - in holy waters; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; वक्रमतिः (vakramatiḥ) - crooked-minded; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(Not dishonest, not undisciplined, not ignorant and not evil-doer bathes in holy waters, O Kauravya, and not crooked-minded man.)
O Kauravya, a man who is dishonest, undisciplined, ignorant, an evil-doer or of crooked mind does not become purified by bathing in holy waters. (03-90-11)
त्वं तु धर्ममतिर्नित्यं धर्मज्ञः सत्यसङ्गरः। विमुक्तः सर्वपापेभ्यो भूय एव भविष्यसि ॥०३-९०-१२॥
tvaṃ tu dharmamatir nityaṃ dharmajñaḥ satyasaṅgaraḥ। vimuktaḥ sarvapāpebhyo bhūya eva bhaviṣyasi ॥03-90-12॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; तु (tu) - but; however; धर्ममति: (dharmamatiḥ) - one whose mind is on dharma; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; धर्मज्ञः (dharmajñaḥ) - knower of dharma; सत्यसङ्गरः (satyasaṅgaraḥ) - firm in truth; विमुक्तः (vimuktaḥ) - freed; सर्वपापेभ्यः (sarvapāpebhyaḥ) - from all sins; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; truly; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become;]
(You, however, always having a mind intent on dharma, knower of dharma, firm in truth, freed from all sins, again indeed you will become.)
But you, always intent on dharma, a knower of dharma and firm in truth, having been freed from all sins, will indeed become so again. (03-90-12)
यथा भगीरथो राजा राजानश्च गयादयः। यथा ययातिः कौन्तेय तथा त्वमपि पाण्डव ॥०३-९०-१३॥
yathā bhagīratho rājā rājānaś ca gayādayaḥ। yathā yayātiḥ kaunteya tathā tvam api pāṇḍava॥03-90-13॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; भगीरथः (bhagīrathaḥ) - Bhagīratha; राजा (rājā) - king; राजानश्च (rājānaś ca) - and kings; गयादयः (gayādayaḥ) - Gaya and others; यथा (yathā) - just as; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; तथा (tathā) - so; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava;]
(Just as Bhagīratha, king, and kings Gaya and others; just as Yayāti, O son of Kunti, so you also, O Pāṇḍava.)
Just as King Bhagīratha and other kings such as Gaya, and as Yayāti, O son of Kunti, so also you, O Pāṇḍava. (03-90-13)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

न हर्षात्सम्प्रपश्यामि वाक्यस्यास्योत्तरं क्वचित्। स्मरेद्धि देवराजो यं किं नामाभ्यधिकं ततः ॥०३-९०-१४॥
na harṣātsamprapaśyāmi vākyasyāsyottaraṃ kvacit. smareddhi devarājo yaṃ kiṃ nāmābhyadhikaṃ tataḥ ॥03-90-14॥
[न (na) - not; हर्षात् (harṣāt) - out of exhilaration; सम्प्रपश्यामि (samprapaśyāmi) - I clearly see; वाक्यस्य (vākyasya) - of the statement; अस्य (asya) - of this; उत्तरं (uttaraṃ) - reply; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere; स्मरेत् (smaret) - may remember; हि (hi) - indeed; देवराजः (devarājaḥ) - the king of gods; यम् (yam) - whom; किं (kiṃ) - what; नाम (nāma) - indeed; अभ्यधिकं (abhyadhikaṃ) - something superior; ततः (tataḥ) - than that;]
(Not out of exhilaration do I clearly see a reply to this statement anywhere. Indeed, the king of gods may remember whom or what indeed is superior to that.)
I do not see any answer to this statement anywhere out of mere exhilaration. Indeed, the king of the gods may recall who or what is truly greater than that. (03-90-14)
भवता सङ्गमो यस्य भ्राता यस्य धनञ्जयः। वासवः स्मरते यस्य को नामाभ्यधिकस्ततः ॥०३-९०-१५॥
bhavatā saṅgamo yasya bhrātā yasya dhanañjayaḥ। vāsavaḥ smarate yasya ko nāmābhyadhikastataḥ ॥03-90-15॥
[भवता (bhavatā) - by you; सङ्गमः (saṅgamaḥ) - association; यस्य (yasya) - whose; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; यस्य (yasya) - whose; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Vāsava (Indra); स्मरते (smarate) - remembers; यस्य (yasya) - whose; कः (kaḥ) - who; नाम (nāmā) - indeed; अभ्यधिकः (abhyadhikaḥ) - superior; ततः (tataḥ) - than him;]
(By you association whose, brother whose Dhanañjaya, Vāsava remembers whose, who indeed superior than him?)
Who indeed is superior to him, whose association is with you, whose brother is Dhanañjaya, and whom even Indra remembers? (03-90-15)
यच्च मां भगवानाह तीर्थानां दर्शनं प्रति। धौम्यस्य वचनादेषा बुद्धिः पूर्वं कृतैव मे ॥०३-९०-१६॥
yacca māṃ bhagavān āha tīrthānāṃ darśanaṃ prati। dhaumyasya vacanād eṣā buddhiḥ pūrvaṃ kṛtaiva me ॥03-90-16॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; आह (āha) - said; तीर्थानाम् (tīrthānām) - of holy places; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - visiting; sight; प्रति (prati) - with respect to; धौम्यस्य (dhaumyasya) - of Dhaumya; वचनात् (vacanāt) - from the word; एषा (eṣā) - this; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - decision; understanding; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - earlier; कृता (kṛtā) - made; एव (eva) - indeed; just; मे (me) - by me; for me;]
(And what the revered one said to me regarding the visiting of holy places, from Dhaumya's word, this decision was indeed made earlier by me.)
And what the revered one told me about the pilgrimage to holy places, following Dhaumya's counsel, I had already made this decision earlier. (03-90-16)
तद्यदा मन्यसे ब्रह्मन्गमनं तीर्थदर्शने। तदैव गन्तास्मि दृढमेष मे निश्चयः परः ॥०३-९०-१७॥
tad yadā manyase brahman gamanaṃ tīrtha-darśane। tadaiva gantāsmi dṛḍham eṣa me niścayaḥ paraḥ॥03-90-17॥
[तद् (tad) - then; यदा (yadā) - when; मन्यसे (manyase) - (you) think; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman (revered one); गमनम् (gamanaṃ) - going; तीर्थदर्शने (tīrtha-darśane) - for pilgrimage-visiting; तदा एव (tad eva) - then only; गन्ता अस्मि (gantā asmi) - I will go; दृढम् (dṛḍham) - firmly; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; मे (me) - my; निश्चयः (niścayaḥ) - decision; परः (paraḥ) - supreme;]
(Then when you think, O Brahman, (it is) going for pilgrimage, then only I will go; firmly, this my supreme decision.)
O Brahman, whenever you think it is time to go on pilgrimage, then and there I will go; this is my firm and ultimate decision. (03-90-17)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

गमने कृतबुद्धिं तं पाण्डवं लोमशोऽब्रवीत्। लघुर्भव महाराज लघुः स्वैरं गमिष्यसि ॥०३-९०-१८॥
gamane kṛtabuddhiṁ taṁ pāṇḍavaṁ lomaśo'bravīt। laghur bhava mahārāja laghuḥ svairaṁ gamiṣyasi ॥03-90-18॥
[गमने (gamane) (gamane) - in going; in journey; कृतबुद्धिं (kṛtabuddhiṁ) (kṛtabuddhiṁ) - having made up mind; determined; तं (taṁ) (taṁ) - him; पाण्डवं (pāṇḍavam) (pāṇḍavam) - the Pāṇḍava; लोमशः (lomaśaḥ) (lomaśaḥ) - Lomaśa; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) (abravīt) - spoke; लघुर्भव (laghur bhava) (laghur bhava) - be light; महाराज (mahārāja) (mahārāja) - O great king; लघुः (laghuḥ) (laghuḥ) - being light; स्वैरं (svairaṁ) (svairaṁ) - freely; गमिष्यसि (gamiṣyasi) (gamiṣyasi) - you will go;]
(In going, having made up his mind, to him, the Pāṇḍava, Lomaśa spoke: "Be light, O great king, being light you will go freely." (03-90-18))
When he had resolved to go, the sage Lomaśa said to the Pāṇḍava: "Be light, O great king; if you are light, you will travel freely." (03-90-18)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

बिक्षाभुजो निवर्तन्तां ब्राह्मणा यतयश्च ये। ये चाप्यनुगताः पौरा राजभक्तिपुरस्कृताः ॥०३-९०-१९॥
bikṣābhujo nivartantāṃ brāhmaṇā yatayaś ca ye। ye cāpy anugatāḥ paurā rājabhaktipuraskṛtāḥ ॥03-90-19॥
[बिक्षाभुजः (bikṣābhujaḥ) - those who subsist on alms; निवर्तन्ताम् (nivartantām) - let them turn back; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; यतयः (yatayaḥ) - ascetics; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; ये (ye) - those who; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अनुगताः (anugatāḥ) - followers; पौरा (paurāḥ) - citizens; राजभक्तिपुरस्कृताः (rājabhaktipuraskṛtāḥ) - motivated by loyalty to the king;]
(Let those who subsist on alms, the brāhmaṇas, and the ascetics turn back; and those citizens who are also followers, motivated by loyalty to the king.)
Let those who live on alms, the brāhmaṇas, the ascetics, as well as those citizens who follow, motivated by loyalty to the king, turn back. (03-90-19)
धृतराष्ट्रं महाराजमभिगच्छन्तु चैव ते। स दास्यति यथाकालमुचिता यस्य या भृतिः ॥०३-९०-२०॥
dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ mahārājam abhigacchantu caiva te। sa dāsyati yathākālam ucitā yasya yā bhṛtiḥ॥03-90-20॥
[धृतराष्ट्रं (dhṛtarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra; (King's name); महाराजम् (mahārājam) - great king; अभिगच्छन्तु (abhigacchantu) - let (them) approach; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ते (te) - they; सः (saḥ) - he; दास्यति (dāsyati) - will give; यथाकालम् (yathākālam) - at the proper time; उचिताः (ucitāḥ) - appropriate; यस्यान्य (yasya) - whose; या (yā) - which; भृतिः (bhṛtiḥ) - sustenance;]
(Dhritarashtra the great king let them approach and indeed they; he will give at the proper time the appropriate sustenance to each according to whose which sustenance.)
Let them indeed approach King Dhritarashtra; he will grant at the proper time the appropriate sustenance to each according to what is due. (03-90-20)
स चेद्यथोचितां वृत्तिं न दद्यान्मनुजेश्वरः। अस्मत्प्रियहितार्थाय पाञ्चाल्यो वः प्रदास्यति ॥०३-९०-२१॥
sa cedyathocitāṃ vṛttiṃ na dadyānmanujeśvaraḥ। asmatpriyahitārthāya pāñcālyo vaḥ pradāsyati॥03-90-21॥
[स (sa) - he; चेत् (cet) - if; यथोचितां (yathocitām) - as appropriate; वृत्तिं (vṛttim) - livelihood; न (na) - not; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; मनुजेश्वरः (manujeśvaraḥ) - king of men; अस्मत् (asmat) - our; प्रिय (priya) - dear; हित (hita) - well-being; अर्थाय (arthāya) - for the purpose of; पाञ्चाल्यः (pāñcālyaḥ) - son of Pāñcālī; वः (vaḥ) - to you; प्रदास्यति (pradāsyati) - will give;]
(He, if the king of men should not give suitable livelihood, for the purpose of our dear well-being, the son of Pāñcālī will give to you.)
If the king of men does not provide proper livelihood, then, for our dear well-being, the son of Pāñcālī will grant it to you. (03-90-21)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततो भूयिष्ठशः पौरा गुरुभारसमाहिताः। विप्राश्च यतयो युक्ता जग्मुर्नागपुरं प्रति ॥०३-९०-२२॥
tato bhūyiṣṭhaśaḥ paurā gurubhārasamāhitāḥ। viprāś ca yatayo yuktā jagmur nāgapuraṃ prati ॥03-90-22॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; भूयिष्ठशः (bhūyiṣṭhaśaḥ) - in great numbers; पौरा (paurāḥ) - citizens; गुरुभारसमाहिताः (gurubhārasamāhitāḥ) - with their minds intent on the heavy burden (weighty task or duty); विप्राः (viprāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; यतयः (yatayaḥ) - ascetics; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - joined; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - departed; नागपुरं (nāgapuram) - to Nāgapura; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Then, in great numbers, the citizens with their minds intent on the heavy burden, and the brāhmaṇas, and the ascetics joined departed towards Nāgapura.)
Then, in great numbers, the citizens deeply concerned with the heavy responsibility, together with the brāhmaṇas and ascetics, set out towards Nāgapura. (03-90-22)
तान्सर्वान्धर्मराजस्य प्रेम्णा राजाम्बिकासुतः। प्रतिजग्राह विधिवद्धनैश्च समतर्पयत् ॥०३-९०-२३॥
tānsarvāndharmarājasya premṇā rājāmbikāsutaḥ। pratijagrāha vidhivad dhanairca samatarpayat ॥03-90-23॥
[तान् (tān) - them; (accusative plural masculine); सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; (accusative plural masculine); धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira); प्रेम्णा (premṇā) - with love; out of affection; राजा (rājā) - the king; (here: Yudhiṣṭhira); अम्बिकासुतः (ambikāsutaḥ) - son of Ambikā (refers to Yudhiṣṭhira); प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - received; accepted; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; properly; धनैः (dhanair) - with riches; with wealth; च (ca) - and; समतर्पयत् (samatarpayat) - fully satisfied; gratified;]
(Them all, with love of Dharmarāja, the king, son of Ambikā, received properly, and with riches fully satisfied.)
The king, Yudhiṣṭhira, son of Ambikā, lovingly received them all as prescribed and generously satisfied them with wealth. (03-90-23)
ततः कुन्तीसुतो राजा लघुभिर्ब्राह्मणैः सह। लोमशेन च सुप्रीतस्त्रिरात्रं काम्यकेऽवसत् ॥०३-९०-२४॥
tataḥ kuntīsuto rājā laghubhirbrāhmaṇaiḥ saha। lomaśena ca suprītastrirātraṃ kāmyake'vasat ॥03-90-24॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कुन्ती-सुतः (kuntī-sutaḥ) - Kunti's son; राजा (rājā) - king; लघुभिः (laghubhiḥ) - with few; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - with brāhmaṇas; सह (saha) - together with; लोमशेन (lomaśena) - with Lomaśa; च (ca) - and; सुप्रीतः (suprītaḥ) - well pleased; त्रि-रात्रम् (tri-rātram) - three nights; काम्यके (kāmyake) - in Kāmyaka; अवसत् (avasat) - dwelt;]
(Then Kunti's son king with few brāhmaṇas together with Lomaśa and well pleased three nights in Kāmyaka dwelt.)
Then King Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kunti, well pleased, stayed for three nights in Kāmyaka together with a few brāhmaṇas and with Lomaśa. (03-90-24)
