ततः प्रयान्तं कौन्तेयं ब्राह्मणा वनवासिनः। अभिगम्य तदा राजन्निदं वचनमब्रुवन् ॥०३-९१-१॥
tataḥ prayāntaṃ kaunteyaṃ brāhmaṇā vanavāsinaḥ। abhigamya tadā rājannidaṃ vacanam abruvan॥03-91-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; after that; प्रयान्तं (prayāntam) - departing; going forth; कौन्तेयं (kaunteyam) - Kaunteya; son of Kunti; ब्राह्मणा (brāhmaṇā) - the Brahmanas; वनवासिनः (vanavāsinaḥ) - inhabitants of the forest; forest-dwellers; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; राजन् (rājan) - O King; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; words; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - they spoke; they said;]
(Then, as the son of Kunti was departing, the Brahmanas dwelling in the forest, having approached, then, O King, spoke these words.)
Then, as Kaunteya was departing, the forest-dwelling Brahmanas approached and, O King, said these words. (03-91-1)
राजंस्तीर्थानि गन्तासि पुण्यानि भ्रातृभिः सह। देवर्षिणा च सहितो लोमशेन महात्मना ॥०३-९१-२॥
rājan tīrthāni gantāsi puṇyāni bhrātṛbhiḥ saha। devarṣiṇā ca sahito lomaśena mahātmanā ॥03-91-2॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O king; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - sacred places; गन्तासि (gantāsi) - you will go; पुण्यानि (puṇyāni) - holy; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सह (saha) - together; देवर्षिणा (devarṣiṇā) - with the divine sage; च (ca) - and; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; लोमशेन (lomaśena) - by Lomaśa; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - the great-souled;]
(O king, you will go to the holy sacred places together with your brothers, and accompanied by the divine sage, by Lomaśa, the great-souled one.)
O king, you will visit the holy places with your brothers, accompanied by the divine sage Lomaśa, the great-souled one. (03-91-2)
अस्मानपि महाराज नेतुमर्हसि पाण्डव। अस्माभिर्हि न शक्यानि त्वदृते तानि कौरव ॥०३-९१-३॥
asmān api mahārāja netum arhasi pāṇḍava। asmābhir hi na shakyāni tvadṛte tāni kaurava॥03-91-3॥
[अस्मान् (asmān) - us; अपि (api) - also; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; नेतुम् (netum) - to lead; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O son of Pāṇḍu; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; हि (hi) - indeed; न (na) - not; शक्यानि (shakyāni) - possible; त्वदृते (tvadṛte) - without you; तानि (tāni) - those; कौरव (kaurava) - O Kaurava;]
(You also ought to lead us, O great king, O son of Pāṇḍu. Indeed, by us those (things) are not possible without you, O Kaurava.)
O great king, O son of Pāṇḍu, you ought to lead us as well. For indeed, without you, we are not able to accomplish those things, O Kaurava. (03-91-3)
श्वापदैरुपसृष्टानि दुर्गाणि विषमाणि च। अगम्यानि नरैरल्पैस्तीर्थानि मनुजेश्वर ॥०३-९१-४॥
śvāpadair upasṛṣṭāni durgāṇi viṣamāṇi ca। agam yāni narair alpais tīrthāni manujeśvara ॥03-91-4॥
[श्वापदैः (śvāpadaiḥ) - by wild animals; उपसृष्टानि (upasṛṣṭāni) - infested; दुर्गाणि (durgāṇi) - difficult places; fortifications; विषमाणि (viṣamāṇi) - uneven; rough; च (ca) - and; अगम्यानि (agam yāni) - inaccessible; नरैः (naraiḥ) - by men; अल्पैः (alpaiḥ) - few; small in number; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - fords; crossings; मनुजेश्वर (manujeśvara) - O lord of men;]
(Infested by wild animals, difficult places and rough ones also, inaccessible fords by men few, O lord of men.)
O lord of men, the difficult and rough places, infested by wild animals, and the fords are inaccessible to men when they are few. (03-91-4)
भवन्तो भ्रातरः शूरा धनुर्धरवराः सदा। भवद्भिः पालिताः शूरैर्गच्छेम वयमप्युत ॥०३-९१-५॥
bhavanto bhrātaraḥ śūrā dhanurdharavarāḥ sadā। bhavadbhiḥ pālitāḥ śūrairgacchema vayamapyuta ॥03-91-5॥
[भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - you all; (polite plural); भ्रातारः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; (nominative plural); शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; brave ones; धनुर्धरवराः (dhanurdharavarāḥ) - the best among bow-holders; distinguished archers; सदा (sadā) - always; भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you; (instrumental plural, polite form); पालिताः (pālitāḥ) - protected; शूरैः (śūraiḥ) - by the brave (ones); गच्छेम (gacchema) - may we go; (1st person plural optative); वयम् (vayam) - we; अपि (api) - also; उत् (ut) - indeed; (emphatic particle);]
(You all, brothers, heroes, best of archers, always; by you protected, by the brave ones, may we go, we also indeed.)
You, brothers, who are always valiant and the best among archers, protected by you who are brave, may we also proceed indeed. (03-91-5)
भवत्प्रसादाद्धि वयं प्राप्नुयाम फलं शुभम्। तीर्थानां पृथिवीपाल व्रतानां च विशां पते ॥०३-९१-६॥
bhavatprasādāddhi vayaṃ prāpnuyāma phalaṃ śubham। tīrthānāṃ pṛthivīpāla vratānāṃ ca viśāṃ pate ॥03-91-6॥
[भवत्-प्रसादात्-हि (bhavat-prasādāt-hi) - from your favor indeed; वयम् (vayam) - we; प्राप्नुयाम (prāpnuyāma) - may obtain; फलं (phalam) - fruit; शुभम् (śubham) - auspicious; तीर्थानां (tīrthānām) - of pilgrimages; पृथिवीपाल (pṛthivīpāla) - O protector of the earth; व्रतानां (vratānām) - of vows; च (ca) - and; विशां पते (viśāṃ pate) - O lord of men;]
(From your favor indeed, we may obtain the auspicious fruit of pilgrimages and of vows, O protector of the earth, and O lord of men.)
O protector of the earth, O lord of men, it is indeed by your favor that we may obtain the auspicious result of pilgrimages and vows. (03-91-6)
तव वीर्यपरित्राताः शुद्धास्तीर्थपरिप्लुताः। भवेम धूतपाप्मानस्तीर्थसंदर्शनान्नृप ॥०३-९१-७॥
tava vīryaparitrātāḥ śuddhās tīrthapariplutāḥ। bhavema dhūtapāpmānas tīrthasaṃdarśanān nṛpa ॥03-91-7॥
[तव (tava) - of you; वीर्यपरित्राताः (vīryaparitrātāḥ) - protected by (your) vigor; शुद्धाः (śuddhāḥ) - purified; तीर्थपरिप्लुताः (tīrthapariplutāḥ) - immersed in sacred fords; भवेम (bhavema) - may we become; धूतपाप्मानः (dhūtapāpmānaḥ) - who have washed away sin; तीर्थसंदर्शनात् (tīrthasaṃdarśanāt) - by the sight of the sacred fords; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Of you protected by vigor, purified, immersed in sacred fords—may we become those whose sins are washed away, by the sight of the sacred fords, O king.)
O king, may we, protected by your vigor, purified and bathed in the sacred fords, become those whose sins are washed away by seeing the sacred fords. (03-91-7)
भवानपि नरेन्द्रस्य कार्तवीर्यस्य भारत। अष्टकस्य च राजर्षेर्लोमपादस्य चैव ह ॥०३-९१-८॥
bhavān api narendrasya kārtavīryasya bhārata। aṣṭakasya ca rājarṣer lomapādasya caiva ha ॥03-91-8॥
[भवान् (bhavān) - you (respectful); अपि (api) - also; नरेन्द्रस्य (narendrasya) - of the king; कार्तवीर्यस्य (kārtavīryasya) - of Kārtavīrya; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अष्टकस्य (aṣṭakasya) - of Aṣṭaka; च (ca) - and; राजर्षेः (rājarṣeḥ) - of the royal sage; लोमपादस्य (lomapādasya) - of Lomapāda; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(You also, O Bhārata, (have heard) of the king Kārtavīrya, of Aṣṭaka, and of the royal sage Lomapāda indeed.)
You too, O Bhārata, know of King Kārtavīrya, Aṣṭaka, and the royal sage Lomapāda, indeed. (03-91-8)
भरतस्य च वीरस्य सार्वभौमस्य पार्थिव। ध्रुवं प्राप्स्यसि दुष्प्रापाँल्लोकांस्तीर्थपरिप्लुतः ॥०३-९१-९॥
bharatasya ca vīrasya sārvabhaumasya pārthiva। dhruvaṃ prāpsyasi duṣprāpāṃllokāṃstīrthapariplutaḥ॥03-91-9॥
[भरतस्य (bharatasya) - of Bharata; च (ca) - and; वीरस्य (vīrasya) - of the heroic; सार्वभौमस्य (sārvabhaumasya) - of the sovereign; universal ruler; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; ध्रुवं (dhruvam) - certainly; surely; प्राप्स्यसि (prāpsyasi) - you will obtain; दुष्प्रापान् (duṣprāpān) - difficult to attain; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; तीर्थपरिप्लुतः (tīrthapariplutaḥ) - immersed in holy places; bathed in sacred waters;]
(Of Bharata and of the heroic, of the sovereign, O king, certainly you will obtain those worlds difficult to attain, being immersed in holy places.)
O king, as the heroic and universal ruler descended from Bharata, you will surely attain those worlds that are hard to reach, being purified by immersion in holy places. (03-91-9)
प्रभासादीनि तीर्थानि महेन्द्रादींश्च पर्वतान्। गङ्गाद्याः सरितश्चैव प्लक्षादींश्च वनस्पतीन् ॥ त्वया सह महीपाल द्रष्टुमिच्छामहे वयम् ॥०३-९१-१०॥
prabhāsādīni tīrthāni mahendrādīṁś ca parvatān। gaṅgādyāḥ saritaś caiva plakṣādīṁś ca vanaspatīn ॥ tvayā saha mahīpāla draṣṭum icchāmahe vayam ॥03-91-10॥
[प्रभासादीनि (prabhāsādīni) - Prabhāsa and others; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - holy places; महेन्द्रादीन् (mahendrādīn) - Mahendra and others; च (ca) - and; पर्वतान् (parvatān) - mountains; गङ्गाद्याः (gaṅgādyāḥ) - Gaṅgā and others; सरितः (saritaḥ) - rivers; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - also; प्लक्षादीन् (plakṣādīn) - Plakṣa and others; च (ca) - and; वनस्पतीन् (vanaspatīn) - trees; त्वया (tvayā) - with you; सह (saha) - together; महीपाल (mahīpāla) - O king; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; इच्छामहे (icchāmahe) - we desire; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(Prabhāsa and other holy places, Mahendra and other mountains, Gaṅgā and other rivers also, Plakṣa and other trees, together with you, O king, to see, we desire, we.)
O king, we desire to see, together with you, Prabhāsa and other holy places, Mahendra and other mountains, Gaṅgā and other rivers, and Plakṣa and other trees. (03-91-10)
यदि ते ब्राह्मणेष्वस्ति काचित्प्रीतिर्जनाधिप। कुरु क्षिप्रं वचोऽस्माकं ततः श्रेयोऽभिपत्स्यसे ॥०३-९१-११॥
yadi te brāhmaṇeṣv asti kācit prītir janādhipa। kuru kṣipraṃ vaco'smākaṃ tataḥ śreyo'bhipatsyase ॥03-91-11॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - for you; ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - in (among) Brāhmaṇas; अस्ति (asti) - there is; काचित् (kācit) - some; प्रीति: (prītiḥ) - affection; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O king; कुरु (kuru) - do; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṃ) - quickly; वच: (vacaḥ) - speech; अस्माकं (asmākam) - of us; ततः (tataḥ) - then; श्रेय: (śreyaḥ) - benefit; अभिपत्स्यसे (abhipatsyase) - you will obtain;]
(If for you among the Brāhmaṇas there is some affection, O king, do quickly our speech; then benefit you will obtain.)
O king, if you have any affection for the Brāhmaṇas, quickly carry out our request; then you will attain benefit. (03-91-11)
तीर्थानि हि महाबाहो तपोविघ्नकरैः सदा। अनुकीर्णानि रक्षोभिस्तेभ्यो नस्त्रातुमर्हसि ॥०३-९१-१२॥
tīrthāni hi mahābāho tapovighnakaraiḥ sadā। anukīrṇāni rakṣobhistebhyo nas trātum arhasi॥03-91-12॥
[तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - fords, sacred places; (plural nominative neuter); हि (hi) - indeed; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed (vocative); तपोविघ्नकरैः (tapovighnakaraiḥ) - by those who cause obstacles to asceticism (instrumental plural masculine); सदा (sadā) - always; अनुकीर्णानि (anukīrṇāni) - filled, crowded; (neuter nominative plural); रक्षोभिः (rakṣobhiḥ) - by demons; (instrumental plural masculine); तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - from those; (ablative plural masculine/neuter); नः (nas) - us; त्रातुम् (trātum) - to protect; (infinitive); अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; (2nd person singular present);]
(The tīrthas indeed, O mighty-armed, always by those who cause obstacles to asceticism are filled by demons; from those you ought to protect us.)
O mighty-armed one, the sacred places are always filled with demons who hinder asceticism. You ought to protect us from them. (03-91-12)
तीर्थान्युक्तानि धौम्येन नारदेन च धीमता। यान्युवाच च देवर्षिर्लोमशः सुमहातपाः ॥०३-९१-१३॥
tīrthāny uktāni dhaumyena nāradena ca dhīmatā। yāny uvāca ca devarṣir lomaśaḥ sumahātapāḥ॥03-91-13॥
[तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - sacred fords; उक्तानि (uktāni) - told; धौम्येन (dhaumyena) - by Dhaumya; नारदेन (nāradena) - by Nārada; च (ca) - and; धीमता (dhīmatā) - wise; यानि (yāni) - which; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; च (ca) - and; देवर्षिः (devarṣiḥ) - the divine sage; लोमशः (lomaśaḥ) - Lomaśa; सुमहातपाः (sumahātapāḥ) - of great austerity;]
(The sacred fords told by Dhaumya, by wise Nārada, and which the divine sage Lomaśa of great austerity also spoke,)

विधिवत्तानि सर्वाणि पर्यटस्व नराधिप। धूतपाप्मा सहास्माभिर्लोमशेन च पालितः ॥०३-९१-१४॥
vidhivattāni sarvāṇi paryaṭasva narādhipa। dhūtapāpmā sahāsmābhir lomaśena ca pālitaḥ॥03-91-14॥
[विधिवत्तानि (vidhivattāni) - according to rule; in the proper way; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all (things); पर्यटस्व (paryaṭasva) - (you) go around; wander; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; lord of men; धूतपाप्मा (dhūtapāpmā) - one whose sin is washed away; purified; सह (saha) - with; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - us; लोमशेन (lomaśena) - with Lomaśa; च (ca) - and; पालितः (pālitaḥ) - protected; guarded;]
(According to rule, all (things), wander, O king. One whose sin is washed away, with us, with Lomaśa and protected.)
O king, wander everywhere in the proper manner. Purified of sin, you are protected by us along with Lomaśa. (03-91-14)
स तथा पूज्यमानस्तैर्हर्षादश्रुपरिप्लुतः। भीमसेनादिभिर्वीरैर्भ्रातृभिः परिवारितः ॥ बाढमित्यब्रवीत्सर्वांस्तानृषीन्पाण्डवर्षभः ॥०३-९१-१५॥
sa tathā pūjyamānas tair harṣād aśrupariplutaḥ। bhīmasenādibhir vīrair bhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥ ॥ bāḍham ity abravīt sarvān tān ṛṣīn pāṇḍavarṣabhaḥ ॥03-91-15॥
[स (sa) - he; तथा (tathā) - thus; पूज्यमानः (pūjyamānaḥ) - being honored; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; हर्षात् (harṣāt) - from joy; अश्रु-परिप्लुतः (aśru-pariplutaḥ) - filled with tears; भीमसेन-आदिभिः (bhīmasena-ādibhiḥ) - by Bhīmasena and others; वीरैः (vīraiḥ) - by heroes; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - by brothers; परिवारितः (parivāritaḥ) - surrounded; बाढम् (bāḍham) - certainly; इति (iti) - thus; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; तान् (tān) - them; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - sages; पाण्डव-ऋषभः (pāṇḍava-ṛṣabhaḥ) - the bull among the Pāṇḍavas (best of the Pāṇḍavas);]
(He thus being honored by them, from joy filled with tears, being surrounded by Bhīmasena and others, heroic brothers, certainly, thus spoke to all those sages, the best of the Pāṇḍavas.)
He, thus honored by them and filled with tears of joy, surrounded by his heroic brothers including Bhīmasena, the bull among the Pāṇḍavas, said "Certainly" to all those sages. (03-91-15)
लोमशं समनुज्ञाप्य धौम्यं चैव पुरोहितम्। ततः स पाण्डवश्रेष्ठो भ्रातृभिः सहितो वशी ॥ द्रौपद्या चानवद्याङ्ग्या गमनाय मनो दधे ॥०३-९१-१६॥
lomaśaṃ samanujñāpya dhaumyaṃ caiva purohitam। tataḥ sa pāṇḍavaśreṣṭho bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito vaśī॥ draupadyā cānavadyāṅgyā gamanāya mano dadhe॥03-91-16॥
[लोमशं (lomaśam) - Lomaśa (name); सँ मनुज्ञाप्य (samanujñāpya) - having taken leave of; allowing; धौम्यं (dhaumyam) - Dhaumya (name); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पुरोहितम् (purohitam) - the priest; ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; पाण्डवश्रेष्ठः (pāṇḍavaśreṣṭhaḥ) - the best of the Pāṇḍavas; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with (his) brothers; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; वशी (vaśī) - self-controlled; द्रौपद्या (draupadyā) - by Draupadī; च (ca) - and; अनवद्याङ्ग्या (anavadyāṅgyā) - having flawless limbs; गमनाय (gamanāya) - for departure; मनो (mano) - mind; दधे (dadhe) - set;]
(Having taken leave of Lomaśa and Dhaumya the priest indeed, then he, the best of the Pāṇḍavas, self-controlled, accompanied by (his) brothers and by Draupadī of flawless limbs, set his mind for departure.)
Having taken leave of Lomaśa and of Dhaumya the priest, then that best of the Pāṇḍavas, self-controlled, together with his brothers and Draupadī of flawless limbs, resolved in his mind to depart. (03-91-16)
अथ व्यासो महाभागस्तथा नारदपर्वतौ। काम्यके पाण्डवं द्रष्टुं समाजग्मुर्मनीषिणः ॥०३-९१-१७॥
atha vyāso mahābhāgastathā nāradaparvatau। kāmyake pāṇḍavaṃ draṣṭuṃ samājagmurmanīṣiṇaḥ॥03-91-17॥
[अथ (atha) - then; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; महाभागः (mahābhāgaḥ) - greatly fortunate one; तथा (tathā) - also; नारदपर्वतौ (nārada-parvatau) - Nārada and Parvata (dual); काम्यके (kāmyake) - in (the forest) Kāmyaka; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - (to) Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira); द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; समाजग्मुः (samājagmuḥ) - approached; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise ones;]
(Then Vyāsa, the greatly fortunate one, also Nārada and Parvata, in Kāmyaka (forest), to Pāṇḍava to see, approached, the wise ones.)
Then the greatly fortunate Vyāsa, along with Nārada and Parvata, wise ones, approached Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira) in the Kāmyaka forest to see him. (03-91-17)
तेषां युधिष्ठिरो राजा पूजां चक्रे यथाविधि। सत्कृतास्ते महाभागा युधिष्ठिरमथाब्रुवन् ॥०३-९१-१८॥
teṣāṃ yudhiṣṭhiro rājā pūjāṃ cakre yathāvidhi। satkṛtās te mahābhāgā yudhiṣṭhiram athābruvan ॥03-91-18॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; राजा (rājā) - king; पूजां (pūjām) - honor; चक्रे (cakre) - performed; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to rule; सत्कृताः (satkṛtāḥ) - honored; ते (te) - they; महाभागाः (mahābhāgāḥ) - greatly fortunate; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira (acc.); अथ (atha) - then; अब्रुवन् (abravan) - said;]
(Of them, Yudhiṣṭhira the king performed honor according to rule. Honored, those greatly fortunate ones then said to Yudhiṣṭhira.)
King Yudhiṣṭhira honored them in accordance with the proper rites. Having been thus honored, those greatly fortunate ones then spoke to Yudhiṣṭhira. (03-91-18)
युधिष्ठिर यमौ भीम मनसा कुरुतार्जवम्। मनसा कृतशौचा वै शुद्धास्तीर्थानि गच्छत ॥०३-९१-१९॥
yudhiṣṭhira yamau bhīma manasā kurutārjavam। manasā kṛtaśaucā vai śuddhāstīrthāni gacchata ॥03-91-19॥
[युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhishthira; यमौ (yamau) - the two brothers (Nakula and Sahadeva); भीम (bhīma) - Bhima; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; कुरुत (kuruta) - do (you all); आर्जवम् (ārjavam) - uprightness; मनसा (manasā) - with mind; कृतशौचा (kṛtaśaucā) - having performed purity; वै (vai) - indeed; शुद्धाः (śuddhāḥ) - pure; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - holy places; गच्छत (gacchata) - go (you all);]
(Yudhishthira, the two brothers, Bhima, by mind do uprightness. With mind, having performed purity, indeed pure, holy places go.)
Yudhishthira, the two brothers, and Bhima, do uprightness with your mind. Having achieved purity of mind, go as pure ones to the holy places. (03-91-19)
शरीरनियमं ह्याहुर्ब्राह्मणा मानुषं व्रतम्। मनोविशुद्धां बुद्धिं च दैवमाहुर्व्रतं द्विजाः ॥०३-९१-२०॥
śarīraniyamaṃ hy āhur brāhmaṇā mānuṣaṃ vratam. manoviśuddhāṃ buddhiṃ ca daivam āhur vrataṃ dvijāḥ ॥03-91-20॥
[शरीरनियमं (śarīraniyamaṃ) - discipline of the body; हि (hi) - indeed; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - the Brāhmaṇas; मानुषं (mānuṣam) - human; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; मनोविशुद्धां (manoviśuddhāṃ) - purified mind; बुद्धिं (buddhiṃ) - intellect; च (ca) - and; दैवम् (daivam) - divine; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; द्विजाः (dvijāḥ) - the twice-born;]
(The discipline of the body, indeed, the Brāhmaṇas say is the human vow. The purified intellect and mind, and the twice-born say is the divine vow.)
The Brāhmaṇas declare that discipline of the body constitutes a human vow; a purified mind and intellect is said by the twice-born to be the divine vow. (03-91-20)
मनो ह्यदुष्टं शूराणां पर्याप्तं वै नराधिप। मैत्रीं बुद्धिं समास्थाय शुद्धास्तीर्थानि गच्छत ॥०३-९१-२१॥
mano hy aduṣṭaṃ śūrāṇāṃ paryāptaṃ vai narādhipa। maitrīṃ buddhiṃ samāsthāya śuddhās tīrthāni gacchata ॥03-91-21॥
[मनो (mano) - O mind; हि (hi) - indeed; अदुष्टं (aduṣṭam) - not wicked; शूराणां (śūrāṇām) - of the brave; पर्याप्तं (paryāptam) - sufficient; वै (vai) - indeed; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; मैत्रीं (maitrīm) - friendship; बुद्धिं (buddhiṃ) - mind; समास्थाय (samāsthāya) - embracing; शुद्धाः (śuddhāḥ) - pure; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - sacred places; गच्छत (gacchata) - go;]
(O mind, indeed, not wicked, of the brave, sufficient, indeed, O king. Embracing a friendly mind, pure, go to sacred places.)
O king, indeed, a mind that is not wicked is sufficient for the brave. Embracing friendship and a pure mind, go to the sacred places. (03-91-21)
ते यूयं मानसैः शुद्धाः शरीरनियमव्रतैः। दैवं व्रतं समास्थाय यथोक्तं फलमाप्स्यथ ॥०३-९१-२२॥
te yūyaṁ manasaiḥ śuddhāḥ śarīra-niyama-vrataiḥ। daivaṁ vrataṁ samāsthāya yathoktaṁ phalam āpsyatha ॥03-91-22॥
[ते (te) - they; those; यूयं (yūyam) - you (plural); मानसैः (manasaiḥ) - by means of the mind; with mental (acts); शुद्धाः (śuddhāḥ) - purified; pure; शरीरनियमव्रतैः (śarīra-niyama-vrataiḥ) - by bodily discipline vows; by vows of bodily regulation; दैवं (daivam) - divine; related to divinity; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; observance; समास्थाय (samāsthāya) - having undertaken; having adopted; यथोक्तम् (yathoktam) - as stated; as said; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; result; आप्स्यथ (āpsyatha) - you will obtain;]
(They, you, by the mind, purified, by vows of bodily regulation, the divine vow having undertaken, as stated, the fruit you will obtain.)
Therefore, you, being purified in mind and by vows of bodily discipline, having undertaken the divine vow as stated, will obtain the result as described. (03-91-22)
ते तथेति प्रतिज्ञाय कृष्णया सह पाण्डवाः। कृतस्वस्त्ययनाः सर्वे मुनिभिर्दिव्यमानुषैः ॥०३-९१-२३॥
te tatheti pratijñāya kṛṣṇayā saha pāṇḍavāḥ। kṛtasvastyayanāḥ sarve munibhir divyamānuṣaiḥ॥03-91-23॥
[ते (te) - they; तथा-इति (tathā-iti) - thus—so; प्रतिज्ञाय (pratijñāya) - having promised; कृष्णया (kṛṣṇayā) - with Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); सह (saha) - together with; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; कृतस्वस्त्ययनाः (kṛtasvastyayanāḥ) - having performed auspicious rites; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मुनिभिः (munibhiḥ) - by sages; दिव्य-मानुषैः (divya-mānuṣaiḥ) - by divine and human (beings);]
(They, having promised thus, with Kṛṣṇā together the Pāṇḍavas, having performed auspicious rites all, by sages, by divine and human beings.)
The Pāṇḍavas, having promised thus along with Kṛṣṇā, all performed auspicious rites attended by sages—both divine and human. (03-91-23)
लोमशस्योपसङ्गृह्य पादौ द्वैपायनस्य च। नारदस्य च राजेन्द्र देवर्षेः पर्वतस्य च ॥०३-९१-२४॥
lomaśasyopasaṅgṛhya pādau dvaipāyanasya ca. nāradasya ca rājendra devarṣeḥ parvatasya ca ॥03-91-24॥
[लोमशस्य (lomaśasya) - of Lomaśa; उपसङ्गृह्य (upasaṅgṛhya) - having embraced; पादौ (pādau) - feet; द्वैपायनस्य (dvaipāyanasya) - of Dvaipāyana; च (ca) - and; नारदस्य (nāradasya) - of Nārada; च (ca) - and; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; देवर्षेः (devarṣeḥ) - of the divine sage (Devarṣi); पर्वतस्य (parvatasya) - of Parvata; च (ca) - and;]
(Having embraced the feet of Lomaśa, and (the feet) of Dvaipāyana, and of Nārada, O king, and of the Devarṣi Parvata also.)

धौम्येन सहिता वीरास्तथान्यैर्वनवासिभिः। मार्गशीर्ष्यामतीतायां पुष्येण प्रययुस्ततः ॥०३-९१-२५॥
dhaumyana sahitā vīrās tathā-anyair vanavāsibhiḥ। mārgaśīrṣyām atītāyām puṣyeṇa prayayus tataḥ॥03-91-25॥
[धौम्येन (dhaumyana) - with Dhaumya; सहिता (sahitā) - joined; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; तथा (tathā) - also; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - with others; वनवासिभिः (vanavāsibhiḥ) - with forest-dwellers; मार्गशीर्ष्याम् (mārgaśīrṣyām) - in the month of Mārgaśīrṣa; अतीतायाम् (atītāyām) - when it was past; पुष्येण (puṣyeṇa) - at Puṣya (nakṣatra); प्रययुः (prayayus) - they departed; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
(With Dhaumya joined, the heroes, also with other forest-dwellers, when the month of Mārgaśīrṣa was past, at Puṣya (asterism), then they departed.)
Joined by Dhaumya, the heroes, along with other forest-dwellers, set out when the month of Mārgaśīrṣa had passed and the Puṣya constellation had arrived. (03-91-25)
कठिनानि समादाय चीराजिनजटाधराः। अभेद्यैः कवचैर्युक्तास्तीर्थान्यन्वचरंस्तदा ॥०३-९१-२६॥
kaṭhināni samādāya cīrājinajaṭādharāḥ। abhedyaiḥ kavacairyuktāstīrthānyanvacaraṃstadā॥03-91-26॥
[कठिनानि (kaṭhināni) - hard (things); समादाय (samādāya) - having taken together; चीराजिनजटाधराः (cīrājinajaṭādharāḥ) - wearing bark-cloth, deer-skin, and matted locks; अभेद्यैः (abhedyaiḥ) - with impenetrable; कवचैः (kavacaiḥ) - armours; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - equipped; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - sacred places; अन्वचरन् (anvacaran) - they visited (followed/roamed); तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Hard things having taken together, wearing bark-cloth, deer-skin, and matted locks, equipped with impenetrable armours, sacred places they visited then.)

इन्द्रसेनादिभिर्भृत्यै रथैः परिचतुर्दशैः। महानसव्यापृतैश्च तथान्यैः परिचारकैः ॥०३-९१-२७॥
indrasenādibhirbhṛtyai rathaiḥ paricaturdaśaiḥ। mahānasavyāpṛtaiśca tathānyaiḥ paricārakaiḥ॥03-91-27॥

सायुधा बद्धनिष्ट्रिंशास्तूणवन्तः समार्गणाः। प्राङ्मुखाः प्रययुर्वीराः पाण्डवा जनमेजय ॥०३-९१-२८॥
sāyudhā baddhaniṣṭriṁśās tūṇavantaḥ samārgaṇāḥ। prāṅmukhāḥ prayayurvīrāḥ pāṇḍavā janamejaya ॥03-91-28॥
[सायुधाः (sāyudhāḥ) - armed; बद्धनिष्ट्रिंशाः (baddha-niṣṭriṁśāḥ) - with girded swords; तूणवन्तः (tūṇavantaḥ) - bearing quivers; समार्गणाः (sam-ārgaṇāḥ) - with arrows together; प्राङ्मुखाः (prāṅmukhāḥ) - facing east; प्रययुः (prayayuḥ) - set forth; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; जनमेजय (janamejaya) - O Janamejaya; ॥०३-९१-२८॥ (॥03-91-28॥) - ;]
