वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
ततः प्रयान्तं कौन्तेयं ब्राह्मणा वनवासिनः। अभिगम्य तदा राजन्निदं वचनमब्रुवन् ॥०३-९१-१॥
Then, as Kaunteya was departing, the forest-dwelling Brahmanas approached and, O King, said these words. (03-91-1)
राजंस्तीर्थानि गन्तासि पुण्यानि भ्रातृभिः सह। देवर्षिणा च सहितो लोमशेन महात्मना ॥०३-९१-२॥
O king, you will visit the holy places with your brothers, accompanied by the divine sage Lomaśa, the great-souled one. (03-91-2)
अस्मानपि महाराज नेतुमर्हसि पाण्डव। अस्माभिर्हि न शक्यानि त्वदृते तानि कौरव ॥०३-९१-३॥
O great king, O son of Pāṇḍu, you ought to lead us as well. For indeed, without you, we are not able to accomplish those things, O Kaurava. (03-91-3)
श्वापदैरुपसृष्टानि दुर्गाणि विषमाणि च। अगम्यानि नरैरल्पैस्तीर्थानि मनुजेश्वर ॥०३-९१-४॥
O lord of men, the difficult and rough places, infested by wild animals, and the fords are inaccessible to men when they are few. (03-91-4)
भवन्तो भ्रातरः शूरा धनुर्धरवराः सदा। भवद्भिः पालिताः शूरैर्गच्छेम वयमप्युत ॥०३-९१-५॥
You, brothers, who are always valiant and the best among archers, protected by you who are brave, may we also proceed indeed. (03-91-5)
भवत्प्रसादाद्धि वयं प्राप्नुयाम फलं शुभम्। तीर्थानां पृथिवीपाल व्रतानां च विशां पते ॥०३-९१-६॥
O protector of the earth, O lord of men, it is indeed by your favor that we may obtain the auspicious result of pilgrimages and vows. (03-91-6)
तव वीर्यपरित्राताः शुद्धास्तीर्थपरिप्लुताः। भवेम धूतपाप्मानस्तीर्थसंदर्शनान्नृप ॥०३-९१-७॥
O king, may we, protected by your vigor, purified and bathed in the sacred fords, become those whose sins are washed away by seeing the sacred fords. (03-91-7)
भवानपि नरेन्द्रस्य कार्तवीर्यस्य भारत। अष्टकस्य च राजर्षेर्लोमपादस्य चैव ह ॥०३-९१-८॥
You too, O Bhārata, know of King Kārtavīrya, Aṣṭaka, and the royal sage Lomapāda, indeed. (03-91-8)
भरतस्य च वीरस्य सार्वभौमस्य पार्थिव। ध्रुवं प्राप्स्यसि दुष्प्रापाँल्लोकांस्तीर्थपरिप्लुतः ॥०३-९१-९॥
O king, as the heroic and universal ruler descended from Bharata, you will surely attain those worlds that are hard to reach, being purified by immersion in holy places. (03-91-9)
प्रभासादीनि तीर्थानि महेन्द्रादींश्च पर्वतान्। गङ्गाद्याः सरितश्चैव प्लक्षादींश्च वनस्पतीन् ॥ त्वया सह महीपाल द्रष्टुमिच्छामहे वयम् ॥०३-९१-१०॥
O king, we desire to see, together with you, Prabhāsa and other holy places, Mahendra and other mountains, Gaṅgā and other rivers, and Plakṣa and other trees. (03-91-10)
यदि ते ब्राह्मणेष्वस्ति काचित्प्रीतिर्जनाधिप। कुरु क्षिप्रं वचोऽस्माकं ततः श्रेयोऽभिपत्स्यसे ॥०३-९१-११॥
O king, if you have any affection for the Brāhmaṇas, quickly carry out our request; then you will attain benefit. (03-91-11)
तीर्थानि हि महाबाहो तपोविघ्नकरैः सदा। अनुकीर्णानि रक्षोभिस्तेभ्यो नस्त्रातुमर्हसि ॥०३-९१-१२॥
O mighty-armed one, the sacred places are always filled with demons who hinder asceticism. You ought to protect us from them. (03-91-12)
तीर्थान्युक्तानि धौम्येन नारदेन च धीमता। यान्युवाच च देवर्षिर्लोमशः सुमहातपाः ॥०३-९१-१३॥
The sacred fords described by Dhaumya, wise Nārada, and also by the divine sage Lomaśa of great austerity, (03-91-13)
विधिवत्तानि सर्वाणि पर्यटस्व नराधिप। धूतपाप्मा सहास्माभिर्लोमशेन च पालितः ॥०३-९१-१४॥
O king, wander everywhere in the proper manner. Purified of sin, you are protected by us along with Lomaśa. (03-91-14)
स तथा पूज्यमानस्तैर्हर्षादश्रुपरिप्लुतः। भीमसेनादिभिर्वीरैर्भ्रातृभिः परिवारितः ॥ बाढमित्यब्रवीत्सर्वांस्तानृषीन्पाण्डवर्षभः ॥०३-९१-१५॥
He, thus honored by them and filled with tears of joy, surrounded by his heroic brothers including Bhīmasena, the bull among the Pāṇḍavas, said "Certainly" to all those sages. (03-91-15)
लोमशं समनुज्ञाप्य धौम्यं चैव पुरोहितम्। ततः स पाण्डवश्रेष्ठो भ्रातृभिः सहितो वशी ॥ द्रौपद्या चानवद्याङ्ग्या गमनाय मनो दधे ॥०३-९१-१६॥
Having taken leave of Lomaśa and of Dhaumya the priest, then that best of the Pāṇḍavas, self-controlled, together with his brothers and Draupadī of flawless limbs, resolved in his mind to depart. (03-91-16)
अथ व्यासो महाभागस्तथा नारदपर्वतौ। काम्यके पाण्डवं द्रष्टुं समाजग्मुर्मनीषिणः ॥०३-९१-१७॥
Then the greatly fortunate Vyāsa, along with Nārada and Parvata, wise ones, approached Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira) in the Kāmyaka forest to see him. (03-91-17)
तेषां युधिष्ठिरो राजा पूजां चक्रे यथाविधि। सत्कृतास्ते महाभागा युधिष्ठिरमथाब्रुवन् ॥०३-९१-१८॥
King Yudhiṣṭhira honored them in accordance with the proper rites. Having been thus honored, those greatly fortunate ones then spoke to Yudhiṣṭhira. (03-91-18)
युधिष्ठिर यमौ भीम मनसा कुरुतार्जवम्। मनसा कृतशौचा वै शुद्धास्तीर्थानि गच्छत ॥०३-९१-१९॥
Yudhishthira, the two brothers, and Bhima, do uprightness with your mind. Having achieved purity of mind, go as pure ones to the holy places. (03-91-19)
शरीरनियमं ह्याहुर्ब्राह्मणा मानुषं व्रतम्। मनोविशुद्धां बुद्धिं च दैवमाहुर्व्रतं द्विजाः ॥०३-९१-२०॥
The Brāhmaṇas declare that discipline of the body constitutes a human vow; a purified mind and intellect is said by the twice-born to be the divine vow. (03-91-20)
मनो ह्यदुष्टं शूराणां पर्याप्तं वै नराधिप। मैत्रीं बुद्धिं समास्थाय शुद्धास्तीर्थानि गच्छत ॥०३-९१-२१॥
O king, indeed, a mind that is not wicked is sufficient for the brave. Embracing friendship and a pure mind, go to the sacred places. (03-91-21)
ते यूयं मानसैः शुद्धाः शरीरनियमव्रतैः। दैवं व्रतं समास्थाय यथोक्तं फलमाप्स्यथ ॥०३-९१-२२॥
Therefore, you, being purified in mind and by vows of bodily discipline, having undertaken the divine vow as stated, will obtain the result as described. (03-91-22)
ते तथेति प्रतिज्ञाय कृष्णया सह पाण्डवाः। कृतस्वस्त्ययनाः सर्वे मुनिभिर्दिव्यमानुषैः ॥०३-९१-२३॥
The Pāṇḍavas, having promised thus along with Kṛṣṇā, all performed auspicious rites attended by sages—both divine and human. (03-91-23)
लोमशस्योपसङ्गृह्य पादौ द्वैपायनस्य च। नारदस्य च राजेन्द्र देवर्षेः पर्वतस्य च ॥०३-९१-२४॥
He embraced the feet of Lomaśa, Dvaipāyana, Nārada, and of the divine sage Parvata, O king. (03-91-24)
धौम्येन सहिता वीरास्तथान्यैर्वनवासिभिः। मार्गशीर्ष्यामतीतायां पुष्येण प्रययुस्ततः ॥०३-९१-२५॥
Joined by Dhaumya, the heroes, along with other forest-dwellers, set out when the month of Mārgaśīrṣa had passed and the Puṣya constellation had arrived. (03-91-25)
कठिनानि समादाय चीराजिनजटाधराः। अभेद्यैः कवचैर्युक्तास्तीर्थान्यन्वचरंस्तदा ॥०३-९१-२६॥
Then, having taken hard things, wearing bark-cloth, deer-skin, and matted hair, and equipped with impenetrable armours, they visited the sacred places. (03-91-26)
इन्द्रसेनादिभिर्भृत्यै रथैः परिचतुर्दशैः। महानसव्यापृतैश्च तथान्यैः परिचारकैः ॥०३-९१-२७॥
Attended by Indrasena and others, by his servants, with fourteen chariots, by those engaged in the kitchen and other attendants. (03-91-27)
सायुधा बद्धनिष्ट्रिंशास्तूणवन्तः समार्गणाः। प्राङ्मुखाः प्रययुर्वीराः पाण्डवा जनमेजय ॥०३-९१-२८॥
O Janamejaya, the heroic Pāṇḍavas, armed, with girded swords, wearing quivers full of arrows, and facing east, set out. (03-91-28)
