ततः सम्प्रस्थितो राजा कौन्तेयो भूरिदक्षिणः। अगस्त्याश्रममासाद्य दुर्जयायामुवास ह ॥०३-९४-१॥
tataḥ samprasthito rājā kaunteyo bhūridakṣiṇaḥ। agastyāśramam āsādya durjayāyām uvāsa ha॥03-94-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सम्प्रस्थितः (samprasthitaḥ) - set out; राजा (rājā) - king; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; भूरिदक्षिणः (bhūridakṣiṇaḥ) - abundant in gifts; अगस्त्याश्रमम् (agastyāśramam) - Agastya's hermitage; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; दुर्जयायाम् (durjayāyām) - in Durjayā; उवास (uvāsa) - dwelt; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Then the king, son of Kunti, abundant in gifts, having set out, having reached Agastya's hermitage, in Durjayā, dwelt indeed.)
Then the king, Kunti's son, bountiful in gifts, set out and, reaching Agastya's hermitage in Durjayā, dwelt there. (03-94-1)
तत्र वै लोमशं राजा पप्रच्छ वदतां वरः। अगस्त्येनेह वातापिः किमर्थमुपशामितः ॥०३-९४-२॥
tatra vai lomaśaṃ rājā papraccha vadatāṃ varaḥ। agastyenaiha vātāpiḥ kimarthamupaśāmitaḥ॥03-94-2॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; वै (vai) - indeed; लोमशं (lomaśam) - (to) Lomaśa; राजा (rājā) - the king; पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; वदतां (vadatām) - of speakers; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; अगस्त्येन (agastyena) - by Agastya; इह (iha) - here; वातापिः (vātāpiḥ) - Vātāpi; किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what reason; उपशामितः (upaśāmitaḥ) - was subdued;]
(There indeed, the king asked Lomaśa, the best of speakers: 'Why was Vātāpi here subdued by Agastya?')
There, the king asked Lomaśa, the foremost of speakers: 'For what reason was Vātāpi subdued here by Agastya?' (03-94-2)
आसीद्वा किम्प्रभावश्च स दैत्यो मानवान्तकः। किमर्थं चोद्गतो मन्युरगस्त्यस्य महात्मनः ॥०३-९४-३॥
āsīdvā kimprabhāvaśca sa daityo mānavāntakaḥ | kimarthaṃ codgato manyuragastyasya mahātmanaḥ ॥03-94-3॥

Lomaśa said.
इल्वलो नाम दैतेय आसीत्कौरवनन्दन। मणिमत्यां पुरि पुरा वातापिस्तस्य चानुजः ॥०३-९४-४॥
ilvalo nāma daiteya āsīt-kauravanandana। maṇimatyāṃ puri purā vātāpis-tasya cānujaḥ ॥03-94-4॥

(Ilvala by name, a Daiteya, was, O Kauravanandana. In Maṇimatī city, formerly, Vātāpi, his, and, younger brother.)
There was a demon named Ilvala, O delight of the Kauravas. Formerly, in the city of Maṇimatī, Vātāpi was his younger brother. (03-94-4)
स ब्राह्मणं तपोयुक्तमुवाच दितिनन्दनः। पुत्रं मे भगवानेकमिन्द्रतुल्यं प्रयच्छतु ॥०३-९४-५॥
sa brāhmaṇaṃ tapoyuktamuvāca ditinandanaḥ. putraṃ me bhagavānekamindratulyaṃ prayacchatu ॥03-94-5॥
[स (sa) - he; ब्राह्मणं (brāhmaṇam) - the brāhmaṇa; तपोयुक्तम् (tapoyuktam) - endowed with austerity; उवाच (uvāca) - said; दितिनन्दनः (ditinandanaḥ) - the son of Diti; पुत्रं (putram) - a son; मे (me) - to me; भगवान् (bhagavān) - O revered one; एकम् (ekam) - one; इन्द्रतुल्यम् (indratulyam) - equal to Indra; प्रयच्छतु (prayacchatu) - may (he) bestow;]
(He, the son of Diti, said to the brāhmaṇa endowed with austerity: 'May the revered one grant me a son, one equal to Indra.')
The son of Diti spoke to the brāhmaṇa devoted to austerity, saying, 'O revered one, grant me a son who is equal to Indra.' (03-94-5)
तस्मै स ब्राह्मणो नादात्पुत्रं वासवसंमितम्। चुक्रोध सोऽसुरस्तस्य ब्राह्मणस्य ततो भृशम् ॥०३-९४-६॥
tasmai sa brāhmaṇo nādāt putraṃ vāsavasaṃmitam। cukrodha so'suras tasya brāhmaṇasya tato bhṛśam ॥03-94-6॥
[तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; स (sa) - he; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; नादात् (nā-dāt) - did not give; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; वासवसंमितम् (vāsavasaṃmitam) - equal to Vāsava (Indra); चुक्रोध (cukrodha) - became angry; सः (saḥ) - he; असुरः (asuraḥ) - the asura; तस्य (tasya) - of him; ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of the brāhmaṇa; ततः (tataḥ) - thereupon; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - excessively;]
(To him, he, the brāhmaṇa, did not give a son equal to Vāsava. He, the asura, became angry at him, the brāhmaṇa, thereupon excessively.)
That brāhmaṇa did not give his son, who was equal to Indra, to him. Thereupon, the asura became extremely angry at the brāhmaṇa. (03-94-6)
समाह्वयति यं वाचा गतं वैवस्वतक्षयम्। स पुनर्देहमास्थाय जीवन्स्म प्रतिदृश्यते ॥०३-९४-७॥
samāhvayati yaṁ vācā gataṁ vaivasvatakṣayam। sa punardehamāsthāya jīvansma pratidṛśyate॥03-94-7॥
[समाह्वयति (samāhvayati) - he summons; यं (yaṁ) - whom; वाचा (vācā) - with speech; गतं (gatam) - departed; वैवस्वतक्षयम् (vaivasvatakṣayam) - to the abode of Vaivasvata (Yama); स (sa) - he; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; देहम् (deham) - body; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having assumed; जीवन् (jīvan) - living; स्म (sma) - indeed; प्रतिदृश्यते (pratidṛśyate) - is seen again;]
(He summons whom with speech, who has departed to the abode of Vaivasvata; he, having again assumed a body, living indeed, is seen again.)
He whom one summons with words, who had gone to the realm of Vaivasvata (Yama); he, assuming a body again, is seen living once more. (03-94-7)
ततो वातापिमसुरं छागं कृत्वा सुसंस्कृतम्। तं ब्राह्मणं भोजयित्वा पुनरेव समाह्वयत् ॥०३-९४-८॥
tato vātāpi-masuraṃ chāgaṃ kṛtvā susaṃskṛtam। taṃ brāhmaṇaṃ bhojayitvā punareva samāhvayat ॥03-94-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वातापिम् (vātāpim) - Vātāpi (proper noun, demon); असुरं (asuram) - asura (demon); छागं (chāgam) - goat; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; सुसंस्कृतम् (susaṃskṛtam) - well prepared; तं (taṃ) - him; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - Brāhmaṇa (Brahmin); भोजयित्वा (bhojayitvā) - having caused to eat; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; समाह्वयत् (samāhvayat) - he called forth;]
(Then, Vātāpi, the asura, having been made into a goat and well prepared, having caused the Brāhmaṇa to eat him, again indeed he called him forth.)
Then, Vātāpi, the asura, was turned into a goat, well prepared, and after making the Brāhmaṇa eat him, he (Ilvala) called him forth again. (03-94-8)
तस्य पार्श्वं विनिर्भिद्य ब्राह्मणस्य महासुरः। वातापिः प्रहसन्राजन्निश्चक्राम विशां पते ॥०३-९४-९॥
tasya pārśvaṁ vinirbhidya brāhmaṇasya mahāsuraḥ. vātāpiḥ prahasan rājan niścakrāma viśāṁ pate ॥03-94-9॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; पार्श्वं (pārśvam) - side; विनिर्भिद्य (vinirbhidya) - having burst forth (through); ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of the brāhmaṇa; महासुरः (mahāsuraḥ) - great asura (demon); वातापिः (vātāpiḥ) - Vātāpi (proper name); प्रहसन् (prahṛsan) - smiling; राजन् (rājan) - O king; निश्चक्राम (niścakrāma) - came out; विशां पते (viśāṁ pate) - O lord of people;]
(Of him side having burst through of the brāhmaṇa, the great asura Vātāpi, smiling, O king, came out, O lord of people.)
The great asura Vātāpi, having burst through the side of the brāhmaṇa, smiled as he came out, O king, O lord of the people. (03-94-9)
एवं स ब्राह्मणान्राजन्भोजयित्वा पुनः पुनः। हिंसयामास दैतेय इल्वलो दुष्टचेतनः ॥०३-९४-१०॥
evaṁ sa brāhmaṇān rājan bhojayitvā punaḥ punaḥ। hiṁsayāmāsa daiteya ilvalo duṣṭacetanaḥ॥03-94-10॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; स (sa) - he; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - Brāhmaṇas; राजन् (rājan) - O King; भोजयित्वा (bhojayitvā) - having caused to eat; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; हिंसयामास (hiṁsayāmāsa) - he killed; दैतेय (daiteya) - the son of Diti; इल्वलः (ilvalaḥ) - Ilvala; दुष्टचेतनः (duṣṭacetanaḥ) - wicked-minded;]
(Thus he, having caused Brāhmaṇas to eat, O King, again and again, killed—the son of Diti, Ilvala, wicked-minded.)
Thus, O King, the wicked-minded Ilvala, son of Diti, repeatedly fed Brāhmaṇas and then killed them. (03-94-10)
अगस्त्यश्चापि भगवानेतस्मिन्काल एव तु। पितॄन्ददर्श गर्ते वै लम्बमानानधोमुखान् ॥०३-९४-११॥
agastyaś cāpi bhagavān etasmin kāla eva tu। pitṝn dadarśa garte vai lambamānān adhomukhān ॥03-94-11॥
[अगस्त्यः (agastyaḥ) - Agastya (proper name); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; एतस्मिन् (etasmin) - at this; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - the ancestors; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; गर्ते (garte) - in a pit; वै (vai) - indeed; लम्बमानान् (lambamānān) - hanging; अधोमुखान् (adhomukhān) - with faces downward;]
(Agastya and also the revered one at this time indeed but the ancestors saw in a pit indeed hanging with faces downward.)
Agastya, the revered one, at that very time saw his ancestors hanging with their faces downward in a pit. (03-94-11)
सोऽपृच्छल्लम्बमानांस्तान्भवन्त इह किम्पराः। सन्तानहेतोरिति ते तमूचुर्ब्रह्मवादिनः ॥०३-९४-१२॥
so'pṛcchallambamānāṃstānbhavanta iha kimparāḥ. santānahetoriti te tamūcurbrahmavādinaḥ ॥03-94-12॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अपृच्छत् (apṛcchat) - asked; लम्बमानान् (lambamānān) - those who were hanging (suspended); तान् (tān) - them; भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - you (respected ones); इह (iha) - here; किम् (kim) - what; पराः (parāḥ) - others; सन्तानहेतोः (santāna-hetor) - for the sake of offspring; इति (iti) - thus; ते (te) - they; तम् (tam) - to him; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; ब्रह्मवादिनः (brahmavādinaḥ) - those who expound on Brahman;]
(He asked those hanging there: "O respected ones, what (is) (your) further purpose here?" For the sake of offspring—thus, they told him, the expounders of Brahman.)
He asked those who were suspended, "Respected ones, why are you here?" They, the expounders of Brahman, replied to him, "(We remain) for the sake of offspring." (03-94-12)
ते तस्मै कथयामासुर्वयं ते पितरः स्वकाः। गर्तमेतमनुप्राप्ता लम्बामः प्रसवार्थिनः ॥०३-९४-१३॥
te tasmai kathayāmāsur vayaṃ te pitaraḥ svakāḥ। gartam etam anuprāptā lambāmaḥ prasavārthinaḥ॥03-94-13॥
[ते (te) - they; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; कथयामासुः (kathayāmāsuḥ) - told; वयम् (vayam) - we; ते (te) - your; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - fathers; स्वकाः (svakāḥ) - own; गर्तम् (gartam) - pit; एतम् (etam) - this; अनुप्राप्ताः (anuprāptāḥ) - reached; लम्बामः (lambāmaḥ) - we hang; प्रसव-अर्थिनः (prasava-arthinaḥ) - desiring offspring;]
(They to him told: we your own fathers, this pit reached, we hang desiring offspring.)
They told him: “We are your own fathers; we have reached this pit and are hanging here, desiring offspring.” (03-94-13)
यदि नो जनयेथास्त्वमगस्त्यापत्यमुत्तमम्। स्यान्नोऽस्मान्निरयान्मोक्षस्त्वं च पुत्राप्नुया गतिम् ॥०३-९४-१४॥
yadi no janayethās tvam agastyāpatyam uttamam। syān no 'smān nirayān mokṣas tvaṃ ca putrāpnuyā gatim ॥03-94-14॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; नो (no) - for us; जनयेथाः (janayethāḥ) - you might beget; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अगस्त्यापत्यम् (agastyāpatyam) - Agastya's offspring; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; स्यान् (syān) - would be; नो (no) - for us; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; निरयान् (nirayān) - from hells; मोक्षः (mokṣaḥ) - liberation; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; च (ca) - and; पुत्रा (putrā) - as a son; अप्नुया (apnuyā) - may attain; गतिम् (gatim) - higher goal;]
(If you might beget for us excellent Agastya-offspring, for us would be liberation from hells, and you as a son may attain higher goal.)
If you produce for us an excellent son, an offspring of Agastya, then we would obtain liberation from hell, and you, as a son, would attain the highest destiny. (03-94-14)
स तानुवाच तेजस्वी सत्यधर्मपरायणः। करिष्ये पितरः कामं व्येतु वो मानसो ज्वरः ॥०३-९४-१५॥
sa tān uvāca tejasvī satya-dharma-parāyaṇaḥ। kariṣye pitaraḥ kāmam vyetu vo mānaso jvaraḥ॥03-94-15॥
[स (sa) - he; तान् (tān) - to them; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - brilliant one; सत्यधर्मपरायणः (satya-dharma-parāyaṇaḥ) - devoted to truth and righteousness; करिष्ये (kariṣye) - I shall do; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - O fathers; कामम् (kāmam) - according to wish; व्येतु (vyetu) - let depart; वः (vo) - your; मानसः (mānasaḥ) - mental; ज्वरः (jvaraḥ) - fever;]
(He to them spoke, the brilliant one, devoted to truth and righteousness. I shall do, O fathers, as you wish, let your mental fever depart.)
The brilliant one, devoted to truth and righteousness, spoke to them: 'O fathers, I shall do as you wish. Let your mental anguish depart.' (03-94-15)
ततः प्रसवसन्तानं चिन्तयन्भगवानृषिः। आत्मनः प्रसवस्यार्थे नापश्यत्सदृशीं स्त्रियम् ॥०३-९४-१६॥
tataḥ prasavasantānaṃ cintayan bhagavān ṛṣiḥ। ātmanaḥ prasavasya arthe na apaśyat sadṛśīṃ striyam॥03-94-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रसवसन्तानं (prasava-santānam) - progeny of offspring; चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - thinking; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the divine; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - his own; प्रसवस्य (prasavasya) - of offspring; अर्थे (arthe) - for the sake; न (na) - not; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; सदृशीं (sadṛśīṃ) - suitable; स्त्रियम् (striyam) - woman;]
(Then, thinking the progeny of offspring, the divine sage, for his own offspring's sake, did not see a suitable woman.)
Then, while considering the progeny, the divine sage did not find a suitable woman for the sake of his own offspring. (03-94-16)
स तस्य तस्य सत्त्वस्य तत्तदङ्गमनुत्तमम्। सम्भृत्य तत्समैरङ्गैर्निर्ममे स्त्रियमुत्तमाम् ॥०३-९४-१७॥
sa tasya tasya sattvasya tattad-aṅgam anuttamam। sambhṛtya tat-samaiḥ aṅgaiḥ nirmame striyam uttamām॥03-94-17॥
[स (sa) - he; तस्य तस्य (tasya tasya) - of each one; सत्त्वस्य (sattvasya) - of the essence; तत्तदङ्गम् (tattad-aṅgam) - their respective limbs; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; सम्भृत्य (sambhṛtya) - having gathered; तत्समैरङ्गैः (tat-samaiḥ aṅgaiḥ) - with limbs equal to those; निर्ममे (nirmame) - he fashioned; स्त्रियम् (striyam) - a woman; उत्तमाम् (uttamām) - superior;]
(He, having gathered the unsurpassed respective limbs of each essence, with limbs equal to those, fashioned a superior woman.)
He collected the finest limbs corresponding to each essence, and with those matching limbs, he created an excellent woman. (03-94-17)
स तां विदर्भराजाय पुत्रकामाय ताम्यते। निर्मितामात्मनोऽर्थाय मुनिः प्रादान्महातपाः ॥०३-९४-१८॥
sa tāṃ vidarbhārājāya putrakāmāya tāmyate। nirmitām ātmano'rthāya muniḥ prādān mahātapāḥ ॥03-94-18॥
[स (sa) - he; तां (tāṃ) - her; विदर्भराजाय (vidarbhārājāya) - to the king of Vidarbha; पुत्रकामाय (putrakāmāya) - desiring a son; ताम्यते (tāmyate) - he is afflicted; निर्मिताम् (nirmitām) - created; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - for himself; अर्थाय (arthāya) - for the sake (of); मुनिः (muniḥ) - the sage; प्रादात् (prādāt) - gave; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - of great austerity;]
(He her to the king of Vidarbha, desiring a son, who is afflicted, created for himself for the sake (of), the sage gave, (the one) of great austerity.)
He, the sage of great austerity, created her for himself and gave her to the king of Vidarbha, who was afflicted with the desire for a son. (03-94-18)
सा तत्र जज्ञे सुभगा विद्युत्सौदामिनी यथा। विभ्राजमाना वपुसा व्यवर्धत शुभानना ॥०३-९४-१९॥
sā tatra jajñe subhagā vidyut-saudāminī yathā। vibhrājamānā vapusā vyavardhata śubhānanā ॥03-94-19॥
[सा (sā) - she; तत्र (tatra) - there; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; सुभगा (subhagā) - fortunate; विद्युत्सौदामिनी (vidyut-saudāminī) - like lightning; यथा (yathā) - as; like; विभ्राजमाना (vibhrājamānā) - shining; वपुसा (vapusā) - by form; with appearance; व्यवर्धत (vyavardhata) - grew; developed; शुभानना (śubhānanā) - auspicious-faced;]
(She there was born, fortunate, like lightning, as, shining, by form, grew, auspicious-faced.)
There, she was born—fortunate, shining like lightning; by her appearance she grew, having an auspicious face. (03-94-19)
जातमात्रां च तां दृष्ट्वा वैदर्भः पृथिवीपतिः। प्रहर्षेण द्विजातिभ्यो न्यवेदयत भारत ॥०३-९४-२०॥
jātamātrāṃ ca tāṃ dṛṣṭvā vaidarbhaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ। praharṣeṇa dvijātibhyo nyavedayata bhārata॥03-94-20॥
[जातमात्रां (jātamātrām) - just-born; च (ca) - and; तां (tām) - her; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; वैदर्भः (vaidarbhaḥ) - king of Vidarbha; पृथिवीपतिः (pṛthivīpatiḥ) - lord of the earth; प्रहर्षेण (praharṣeṇa) - with joy; द्विजातिभ्यः (dvijātibhyaḥ) - to the twice-born; न्यवेदयत (nyavedayata) - informed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(And having seen her just-born, the king of Vidarbha, the lord of the earth, with joy, informed the twice-born, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, having seen her just born, the king of Vidarbha, the lord of the earth, joyfully announced it to the twice-born. (03-94-20)
अभ्यनन्दन्त तां सर्वे ब्राह्मणा वसुधाधिप। लोपामुद्रेति तस्याश्च चक्रिरे नाम ते द्विजाः ॥०३-९४-२१॥
abhyanandanta tāṃ sarve brāhmaṇā vasudhādhipa। lopāmudreti tasyāś ca cakrire nāma te dvijāḥ ॥03-94-21॥
[अभ्यनन्दन्त (abhyanandanta) - they rejoiced; तां (tāṃ) - her; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ब्राह्मणा (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; वसुधाधिप (vasudhādhipa) - O lord of the earth; लोपामुद्रेति (lopāmudre iti) - “Lopamudra” thus; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - her; च (ca) - and; चक्रिरे (cakrire) - they made; नाम (nāma) - name; ते (te) - those; द्विजाः (dvijāḥ) - twice-born;]
(they rejoiced her all Brāhmaṇas O lord of the earth. “Lopamudra” thus her and they made name those twice-born)
O lord of the earth, all the Brāhmaṇas rejoiced at her. Those twice-born gave her the name “Lopamudra.” (03-94-21)
ववृधे सा महाराज बिभ्रती रूपमुत्तमम्। अप्स्विवोत्पलिनी शीघ्रमग्नेरिव शिखा शुभा ॥०३-९४-२२॥
vavṛdhe sā mahārāja bibhratī rūpam-uttamam। apsv-ivotpalinī śīghram-agner-iva śikhā śubhā॥03-94-22॥
[ववृधे (vavṛdhe) - grew; increased; सा (sā) - she; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; बिभ्रती (bibhratī) - bearing; possessing; रूपमुत्तमम् (rūpam-uttamam) - appearance (rūpa) – excellent (uttamam); अप्स्विव (apsu-iva) - in water (apsu) – like (iva); उत्पलिनी (utpalinī) - a pond of lotuses; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; अग्नेः (agner) - of fire; इव (iva) - like; शिखा (śikhā) - flame; शुभा (śubhā) - splendid; auspicious;]
(She grew, O great king, bearing an excellent appearance, just as a pond of lotuses in water, quickly, like the splendid flame of fire.)
She grew, O great king, possessing a most beautiful form, just as a lotus-pond flourishes in water, swiftly like the splendid flame of fire. (03-94-22)
तां यौवनस्थां राजेन्द्र शतं कन्याः स्वलङ्कृताः। दाशीशतं च कल्याणीमुपतस्थुर्वशानुगाः ॥०३-९४-२३॥
tāṃ yauvanasthāṃ rājendra śataṃ kanyāḥ sv-alaṅkṛtāḥ. dāśī-śataṃ ca kalyāṇīm upatasthur vaśānugāḥ ॥03-94-23॥
[तां (tāṃ) - her; यौवनस्थां (yauvanasthāṃ) - in the state of youth; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king (lord of kings); शतम् (śatam) - a hundred; कन्याः (kanyāḥ) - maidens; स्वलङ्कृताः (sv-alaṅkṛtāḥ) - well adorned; दाशी-शतम् (dāśī-śatam) - a hundred female attendants; च (ca) - and; कल्याणीम् (kalyāṇīm) - the auspicious one; उपतस्थुः (upatasthuḥ) - attended upon; वशानुगाः (vaśānugāḥ) - obedient ones;]
(Her, in the state of youth, O king, a hundred maidens well adorned, and a hundred female attendants, also, the auspicious one, attended upon, obedient ones.)
A hundred beautifully adorned maidens and a hundred obedient female attendants attended upon her, who was in the prime of youth, O king. (03-94-23)
सा स्म दासीशतवृता मध्ये कन्याशतस्य च। आस्ते तेजस्विनी कन्या रोहिणीव दिवि प्रभो ॥०३-९४-२४॥
sā sma dāsīśatavṛtā madhye kanyāśatasya ca। āste tejasvinī kanyā rohiṇīva divi prabho॥03-94-24॥
[सा (sā) - she; स्म (sma) - indeed; दासीशतवृता (dāsīśatavṛtā) - attended by hundreds of female servants; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; कन्याशतस्य (kanyāśatasya) - of a hundred maidens; च (ca) - and; आस्ते (āste) - sits; तेजस्विनी (tejasvinī) - radiant; कन्या (kanyā) - maiden; रोहिणीव (rohiṇīva) - like Rohiṇī; दिवि (divi) - in the sky; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(She indeed, attended by hundreds of female servants, in the midst of a hundred maidens and sits, radiant maiden, like Rohiṇī in the sky, O lord.)
She, O lord, attended by a hundred female servants and among a hundred maidens, sits radiant like Rohiṇī in the sky. (03-94-24)
यौवनस्थामपि च तां शीलाचारसमन्विताम्। न वव्रे पुरुषः कश्चिद्भयात्तस्य महात्मनः ॥०३-९४-२५॥
yauvanasthām api ca tāṃ śīlācārasamanvitām। na vavre puruṣaḥ kaścid bhayāt tasya mahātmanaḥ॥03-94-25॥
[यौवनस्थाम् (yauvanasthām) - one situated in youth; अपि (api) - even; च (ca) - and; ताम् (tām) - her; शीलाचारसमन्विताम् (śīlācārasamanvitām) - endowed with character and conduct; न (na) - not; वव्रे (vavre) - desired (in marriage); पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; तस्य (tasya) - of him; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one;]
(Even her, youthful and endowed with character and conduct, not did any man desire (in marriage) from fear of that great-souled one.)
Even though she was young and possessed of good character and conduct, no man desired her for marriage, out of fear of that great-souled one. (03-94-25)
सा तु सत्यवती कन्या रूपेणाप्सरसोऽप्यति। तोषयामास पितरं शीलेन स्वजनं तथा ॥०३-९४-२६॥
sā tu satyavatī kanyā rūpeṇāpsaraso'pyati। toṣayāmāsa pitaraṃ śīlena svajanaṃ tathā॥03-94-26॥
[सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - but; सत्यवती (satyavatī) - Satyavati; कन्या (kanyā) - maiden; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - by beauty; अप्सरसोऽपि (apsaraso'pi) - even (compared to) apsaras; अति (ati) - surpassed; तोषयामास (toṣayāmāsa) - she gladdened; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father; शीलेन (śīlena) - by character; स्वजनं (svajanaṃ) - her own people; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(She but Satyavati maiden by beauty even (compared to) apsaras surpassed. She gladdened father by character, her own people likewise.)
But that maiden Satyavati, by her beauty, even surpassed the apsaras. By her character, she gladdened her father and likewise her own people. (03-94-26)
वैदर्भीं तु तथायुक्तां युवतीं प्रेक्ष्य वै पिता। मनसा चिन्तयामास कस्मै दद्यां सुतामिति ॥०३-९४-२७॥
vaidarbḥīṃ tu tathāyuktāṃ yuvatīṃ prekṣya vai pitā। manasā cintayāmāsa kasmai dadyāṃ sutāmiti॥03-94-27॥
[वैदर्भीं (vaidarbḥīṃ) - the girl from Vidarbha; तु (tu) - but; तथायुक्तां (tathāyuktāṃ) - thus endowed; युवतीं (yuvatīṃ) - young woman; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; वै (vai) - indeed; पिता (pitā) - the father; मनसा (manasā) - with (his) mind; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - he thought; कस्मै (kasmai) - to whom; दद्याम् (dadyām) - I should give; सुताम् (sutām) - daughter; इति (iti) - thus;]
(The girl from Vidarbha, but thus endowed, young woman, having seen, indeed, the father, with (his) mind, he thought: to whom should I give my daughter, thus.)
But, having seen the young girl of Vidarbha, thus endowed, the father thought in his mind, 'To whom should I give my daughter?' (03-94-27)
