tato jagāma kauravya so'gastyo bhikṣituṃ vasu। śrutarvāṇaṃ mahīpālaṃ yaṃ vedābhyadhikaṃ nṛpaiḥ ॥03-96-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; जगाम (jagāma) - he went; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; सः (saḥ) - he; अगस्त्यः (agastyaḥ) - Agastya; भिक्षितुम् (bhikṣitum) - to beg; वसु (vasu) - wealth; श्रुतर्वाणम् (śrutarvāṇam) - famous; महीपालम् (mahīpālam) - king; यम् (yam) - whom; वेद-अभ्यधिकम् (veda-abhyadhikam) - surpassing the Vedas; नृपैः (nṛpaiḥ) - by kings;]
(Then he went, O descendant of Kuru, that Agastya, to beg for wealth, to the famous king, whom by kings (he was) surpassing the Vedas.)
Then, O Kaurava, that Agastya went to beg for wealth from the renowned king, whom the kings considered superior even to the Vedas. (03-96-1)
स विदित्वा तु नृपतिः कुम्भयोनिमुपागमत्। विषयान्ते सहामात्यः प्रत्यगृह्णात्सुसत्कृतम् ॥०३-९६-२॥
sa viditvā tu nṛpatiḥ kumbhayonim upāgamat। viṣayānte saha-āmātyaḥ pratyagṛhṇāt susatkṛtam ॥03-96-2॥

(He, having known, but the king approached Kumbhayoni. At the edge of the territory, with the minister, (the king) received (him) with great honor.)
Having learned this, the king approached Kumbhayoni; at the boundary of his kingdom, together with his minister, he respectfully received him with great honor. (03-96-2)
तस्मै चार्घ्यं यथान्यायमानीय पृथिवीपतिः। प्राञ्जलिः प्रयतो भूत्वा पप्रच्छागमनेऽर्थिताम् ॥०३-९६-३॥
tasmai cārghyaṃ yathā-nyāyam ānīya pṛthivī-patiḥ। prāñjaliḥ prayataḥ bhūtvā papracchāgamane'rthitām ॥03-96-3॥

[वित्तार्थिनम् (vittārthinam) - wealth-seeker; one desiring wealth; अनुप्राप्तम् (anuprāptam) - who has come; arrived; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; you understand; माम् (mām) - me; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivīpate) - O lord of the earth; king; यथा-शक्ति (yathā-śakti) - according to (your) capacity; अविहिंस्य् (avihiṃsya) - not harming; अन्यांश् (anyān) - others; संविभागम् (saṃvibhāgam) - portion; share; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - give; grant; मे (me) - to me;]
(O lord of the earth, know me, who has arrived as a wealth-seeker. According to (your) capacity, without harming others, grant a share to me.)
O king, know me as one who has come seeking wealth. Please, give me a share according to your ability, without causing harm to others. (03-96-4)

[तत (tat) - that; आयव्ययौ (āyavyayau) - income and expenditure; पूर्णौ (pūrṇau) - filled; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; राजा (rājā) - the king; न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - reported; अतो (ato) - therefore; विद्वन् (vidvan) - O learned one; उपादत्स्व (upādatsva) - take; यत् (yat) - what; अत्र (atra) - here; वसु (vasu) - treasure; मन्यसे (manyase) - you consider;]
(That income and expenditure filled, to him the king reported. Therefore, O learned one, take what treasure here you consider.)
The king presented to him the complete record of income and expenditure. Therefore, O learned one, take whatever treasure here you deem appropriate. (03-96-5)
तत आयव्ययौ दृष्ट्वा समौ सममतिर्द्विजः। सर्वथा प्राणिनां पीडामुपादानादमन्यत ॥०३-९६-६॥
tat āyavyayau dṛṣṭvā samau samamatirdvijaḥ। sarvathā prāṇināṃ pīḍām upādānād amanyata ॥03-96-6॥
[तत् (tat) - that; आयव्ययौ (āyavyayau) - income and expenditure; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having observed; समौ (samau) - equal; सममति: (samamatiḥ) - one with an impartial mind; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the twice-born; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - entirely; प्राणिनाम् (prāṇinām) - of living beings; पीडाम् (pīḍām) - affliction; उपादानात् (upādānāt) - from acquisition (taking); अमन्यत (amanyata) - understood;]
(That income and expenditure having observed equal, the impartial-minded twice-born, entirely, the affliction of living beings, from taking acquisition, understood.)
Having observed that income and expenditure were equal, the twice-born man with impartial mind understood that all affliction for living beings arose entirely from acquisition (taking). (03-96-6)
स श्रुतर्वाणमादाय वध्र्यश्वमगमत्ततः। स च तौ विषयस्यान्ते प्रत्यगृह्णाद्यथाविधि ॥०३-९६-७॥
sa śrutarvāṇam ādāya vadhryaśvam agamat tataḥ. sa ca tau viṣayasya ante pratyagṛhṇād yathāvidhi ॥03-96-7॥

(He, taking Śrutarvāṇa and Vadhryaśva, went from there. And he, at the border of the territory, received the two according to rule.)

तयोरर्घ्यं च पाद्यं च वध्र्यश्वः प्रत्यवेदयत्। अनुज्ञाप्य च पप्रच्छ प्रयोजनमुपक्रमे ॥०३-९६-८॥

[वित्तकामौ (vitta-kāmau) - wealth-desiring two; (those who desire wealth; इह (iha) - here; प्राप्तौ (prāptau) - having attained; विद्ध्यावान् (viddhi-āvān) - know (imperative)-us (dual); पृथिवीपते (pṛthivīpate) - O king (lord of earth); यथा (yathā) - as; शक्त्या (śaktyā) - as per ability; अविहिंस्य (avihiṃsya) - without harming; अन्यान् (anyān) - others; संविभागं (saṃvibhāgaṃ) - a share, distribution; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - grant (imperative); नौ (nau) - to us (dual);]
(O lord of the earth, know us here as two desirous of wealth, having attained (you). As is possible, without harming others, grant us a share.)
O king, know that we are two who desire wealth who have come here. Grant us both a share, to the best of your ability, without causing harm to others. (03-96-9)

(That income and expenditure being complete by those two, the king declared. Then, having known, let them take whatever here remains in excess.)
After those two completed both the income and expenditure, the king declared it. Then, upon realizing, let them take whatever remains here in excess. (03-96-10)

Seeing that income and expenditure were equal, the twice-born, being of equal mind, considered that in every way, the suffering of living beings comes from acquisition. (03-96-11)
पौरुकुत्सं ततो जग्मुस्त्रसदस्युं महाधनम्। अगस्त्यश्च श्रुतर्वा च वध्र्यश्वश्च महीपतिः ॥०३-९६-१२॥
paurukutsaṁ tato jagmustrasadasyuṁ mahādhanam. agastyaś ca śrutervā ca vadhryaśvaś ca mahīpatiḥ ॥03-96-12॥
[पौरुकुत्सं (paurukutsaṁ) - the son of Purukutsa; ततः (tataḥ) - then; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they went; त्रसदस्युम् (trasadasyum) - Trasadasyu (proper noun); महाधनम् (mahādhanam) - greatly wealthy; अगस्त्यः (agastyaḥ) - Agastya; च (ca) - and; श्रुतर्वा (śrutervā) - Śrutervā (proper noun); च (ca) - and; वध्र्यश्वः (vadhryaśvaḥ) - Vadhryaśva (proper noun); च (ca) - and; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - king;]
(The son of Purukutsa then they went to Trasadasyu the greatly wealthy; Agastya and Śrutervā and Vadhryaśva and the king.)
Then the son of Purukutsa, Agastya, Śrutervā, and Vadhryaśva, the kings, went to Trasadasyu, the immensely wealthy. (03-96-12)
त्रसदस्युश्च तान्सर्वान्प्रत्यगृह्णाद्यथाविधि। अभिगम्य महाराज विषयान्ते सवाहनः ॥०३-९६-१३॥
trasadasyuś ca tān sarvān pratyagṛhṇād yathāvidhi. abhigamya mahārāja viṣayānte savāhanaḥ ॥03-96-13॥

अर्चयित्वा यथान्यायमिक्ष्वाकू राजसत्तमः। समाश्वस्तांस्ततोऽपृच्छत्प्रयोजनमुपक्रमे ॥०३-९६-१४॥
arcayitvā yathā-nyāyam ikṣvākū rāja-sattamaḥ। samāśvastāṃs tato'papṛcchat prayojanam upakrame ॥03-96-14॥

O king, acknowledge for us the wealth and possessions gained here, and, as far as possible, without harming others, distribute them to us. (03-96-15)

(That income and expenditure, both complete, of them the king informed. Therefore, having known, collect together what here remains in excess.)
The king reported to them that both the income and the expenditure were complete. Therefore, after knowing this, collect whatever remains here in excess. (03-96-16)

Seeing that income and expenditure were equal, the twice-born with an equal mind considered in every way the pain to living beings arising from acceptance. (03-96-17)
ततः सर्वे समेत्याथ ते नृपास्तं महामुनिम्। इदमूचुर्महाराज समवेक्ष्य परस्परम् ॥०३-९६-१८॥
tataḥ sarve sametya atha te nṛpās taṃ mahāmunim। idam ūcur mahārāja samavekṣya parasparam ॥03-96-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वे (sarve) - all; समेत्य (sametya) - having come together; अथ (atha) - then; ते (te) - they; नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings; तं (taṃ) - that; महामुनिम् (mahāmunim) - great sage; इदम् (idam) - this; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; समवेक्ष्य (samavekṣya) - having looked at; परस्परम् (parasparam) - each other;]
(Then all, having come together, then those kings, to that great sage, this said, O great king, having regarded each other.)
Then all the kings, having assembled and after looking at each other, addressed these words to the great sage, O great king. (3-96-18)
अयं वै दानवो ब्रह्मन्निल्वलो वसुमान्भुवि। तमभिक्रम्य सर्वेऽद्य वयं याचामहे वसु ॥०३-९६-१९॥
ayaṃ vai dānavo brahman nilvalo vasumān bhuvi। tam abhikramya sarve 'dya vayaṃ yācāmahe vasu॥03-96-19॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; वै (vai) - indeed; दानवः (dānavaḥ) - dānava (demon); ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brāhmaṇa; निल्वलः (nilvalaḥ) - Nilvala (proper name); वसुमान् (vasumān) - possessed of wealth; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; तम् (tam) - him; अभिक्रम्य (abhikramya) - having approached; सर्वे (sarve) - all; अद्य (adya) - today; वयम् (vayam) - we; याचामहे (yācāmahe) - (we) beg; वसु (vasu) - wealth;]
(This indeed Dānava, O Brāhmaṇa, Nilvala, possessed of wealth, on earth. Him having approached, all today we beg (for) wealth.)
O Brāhmaṇa, this Dānava named Nilvala is wealthy on earth. Having approached him, let us all ask him for wealth today. (03-96-19)
तेषां तदासीद्रुचितमिल्वलस्योपभिक्षणम्। ततस्ते सहिता राजन्निल्वलं समुपाद्रवन् ॥०३-९६-२०॥
teṣāṁ tad āsīd rucitam ilvalasya upabhikṣaṇam । tataḥ te sahitā rājan nilvalaṁ samupādravan ॥03-96-20॥
[तेषां (teṣāṁ) - of them; तत् (tad) - that; आसीत् (āsīt) - there was; रुचितम् (rucitam) - pleasing; इल्वलस्य (ilvalasya) - of Ilvala; उपभिक्षणम् (upabhikṣaṇam) - eating; ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; राजन् (rājan) - O king; इल्वलम् (ilvalam) - Ilvala; समुपाद्रवन् (samupādravan) - approached;]
(Of them that was pleasing, Ilvala's eating. Then they together, O king, approached Ilvala.)
