स सागरं समासाद्य गङ्गायाः सङ्गमे नृप। नदीशतानां पञ्चानां मध्ये चक्रे समाप्लवम् ॥०३-११४-२॥
sa sāgaraṃ samāsādya gaṅgāyāḥ saṅgame nṛpa। nadīśatānāṃ pañcānāṃ madhye cakre samāplavam ॥03-114-2॥

ete kaliṅgāḥ kaunteya yatra vaitaraṇī nadī। yatrāyajata dharmo'pi devāñśaraṇametya vai ॥03-114-4॥

(These Kalingas, O son of Kunti, where (is) the Vaitarani river, where also Dharma, having come to the refuge of the gods, offered sacrifice indeed.)
Here are the Kalingas, O son of Kunti, where the river Vaitarani flows, and where even Dharma, having sought refuge with the gods, once performed a sacrifice. (03-114-4)
ऋषिभिः समुपायुक्तं यज्ञियं गिरिशोभितम्। उत्तरं तीरमेतद्धि सततं द्विजसेवितम् ॥०३-११४-५॥
ṛṣibhiḥ samupāyuktaṃ yajñiyaṃ giriśobhitam। uttaraṃ tīram etad dhi satataṃ dvijasevitam ॥03-114-5॥

समेन देवयानेन पथा स्वर्गमुपेयुषः। अत्र वै ऋषयोऽन्येऽपि पुरा क्रतुभिरीजिरे ॥०३-११४-६॥

हृते पशौ तदा देवास्तमूचुर्भरतर्षभ। मा परस्वमभिद्रोग्धा मा धर्मान्सकलान्नशीः ॥०३-११४-८॥
hṛte paśau tadā devās tam ūcur bharatarṣabha। mā parasvam abhidroghdhā mā dharmān sakalān naśīḥ ॥03-114-8॥
[हृते (hṛte) - having been taken away; पशौ (paśau) - sacrificial animal; तदा (tadā) - then; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; तम् (tam) - to him; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; भरतरर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; मा (mā) - do not; परस्वम् (paraskvam) - another's property; अभिद्रोग्धाः (abhidroghdhā) - seek to harm; मा (mā) - do not; धर्मान् (dharmān) - righteous acts; सकलान् (sakalān) - all; नशीः (naśīḥ) - destroy;]
(Having taken away the animal, then the gods said to him, O best of the Bharatas, "Do not seek to harm another's property; do not destroy all righteous acts." (03-114-8))

The gods, out of fear of Rudra, determined to give him the best and permanent share, a portion not previously allotted, from among all shares. (03-114-11)
इमां गाथामत्र गायन्नपः स्पृशति यो नरः। देवयानस्तस्य पन्थाश्चक्षुश्चैव प्रकाशते ॥०३-११४-१२॥

(Then, the Pāṇḍavas, all, as well as Draupadī, having descended to the Vaitaraṇī, the greatly fortunate ones, performed the satisfying (rites) for the ancestors.)
Then all the Pāṇḍavas, together with Draupadī, descended to the Vaitaraṇī river. The greatly fortunate ones there performed offerings to satisfy their ancestors. (03-114-13)

सर्वाँल्लोकान्प्रपश्यामि प्रसादात्तव सुव्रत। वैखानसानां जपतामेष शब्दो महात्मनाम् ॥०३-११४-१५॥
sarvāṁllokān prapaśyāmi prasādāt tava suvrata। vaikhānasānāṁ japatām eṣa śabdo mahātmanām ॥03-114-15॥
[सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; प्रपश्यामि (prapaśyāmi) - I perceive; I see; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by grace; तव (tava) - of you; your; सुव्रत (suvrata) - O virtuous one; वैखानसानाम् (vaikhānasānām) - of the Vaikhānasas; जपताम् (japatām) - of those reciting (mantras); एष (eṣa) - this; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of great souls;]
(All worlds I see by your grace, O virtuous one. Of the Vaikhānasas, of those reciting, this sound (is) of great souls.)
O virtuous one, by your grace I see all worlds. This sound of those reciting among the Vaikhānasas is that of great souls. (03-114-15)

त्रिशतं वै सहस्राणि योजनानां युधिष्ठिर। यत्र ध्वनिं शृणोष्येनं तूष्णीमास्स्व विशां पते ॥०३-११४-१६॥
triśataṃ vai sahasrāṇi yojanānāṃ yudhiṣṭhira। yatra dhvaniṃ śṛṇoṣy enaṃ tūṣṇīm ās s(v)a viśāṃ pate ॥03-114-16॥
[त्रिशतम् (triśatam) - three hundred; वै (vai) - indeed; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousand; योजनानाम् (yojanānām) - of yojanas (a measure of distance); युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; यत्र (yatra) - where; ध्वनिम् (dhvanim) - sound; शृणोषि (śṛṇoṣi) - you hear; एनम् (enam) - this; तूष्णीम् (tūṣṇīm) - silent; आस्स्व (ās s(v)a) - be; विशां पते (viśāṃ pate) - O lord of the people;]
(Three hundred indeed thousand of yojanas, Yudhiṣṭhira, where sound you hear this, silent be, O lord of the people.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, three hundred thousand yojanas away, wherever you hear this sound, remain silent, O lord of the people. (03-114-16)
एतत्स्वयम्भुवो राजन्वनं रम्यं प्रकाशते। यत्रायजत कौन्तेय विश्वकर्मा प्रतापवान् ॥०३-११४-१७॥
etatsvayambhuvo rājan vanaṃ ramyaṃ prakāśate। yatrāyajata kaunteya viśvakarmā pratāpavān ॥03-114-17॥

यस्मिन्यज्ञे हि भूर्दत्ता कश्यपाय महात्मने। सपर्वतवनोद्देशा दक्षिणा वै स्वयम्भुवा ॥०३-११४-१८॥
yasmin yajñe hi bhūr dattā kaśyapāya mahātmane. sa-parvata-vana-uddeśā dakṣiṇā vai svayambhuvā ॥03-114-18॥

In that sacrifice, indeed, the earth was given by Svayambhū to the great-souled Kaśyapa, along with mountains and forest regions, as the sacrificial gift. (03-114-18)
अवासीदच्च कौन्तेय दत्तमात्रा मही तदा। उवाच चापि कुपिता लोकेश्वरमिदं प्रभुम् ॥०३-११४-१९॥

न मां मर्त्याय भगवन्कस्मैचिद्दातुमर्हसि। प्रदानं मोघमेतत्ते यास्याम्येषा रसातलम् ॥०३-११४-२०॥
na māṃ martyāya bhagavan kasmaicid dātum arhasi। pradānaṃ mogham etat te yāsyāmy eṣā rasātalam ॥03-114-20॥

(Not me to a mortal, O Lord, to anyone to give you should; giving in vain, this your; will go she to the netherworld.)
O Lord, you should not give me to any mortal; for this gift of yours would be in vain—she (I) will go to the netherworld. (03-114-20)
विषीदन्तीं तु तां दृष्ट्वा कश्यपो भगवानृषिः। प्रसादयां बभूवाथ ततो भूमिं विशां पते ॥०३-११४-२१॥
viṣīdantīṃ tu tāṃ dṛṣṭvā kaśyapo bhagavān ṛṣiḥ। prasādayāṃ babhūvātha tato bhūmiṃ viśāṃ pate ॥03-114-21॥

(But having seen her desponding, Kaśyapa, the revered sage, became to pacify (her), then thereafter (he pacified) the earth, O lord of men.)
O lord of men, seeing her despondent, the revered sage Kaśyapa endeavored to pacify her, and then, O lord of men, pacified the earth. (03-114-21)
ततः प्रसन्ना पृथिवी तपसा तस्य पाण्डव। पुनरुन्मज्ज्य सलिलाद्वेदीरूपा स्थिता बभौ ॥०३-११४-२२॥
tataḥ prasannā pṛthivī tapasā tasya pāṇḍava। punar-unmajjya salilād vedī-rūpā sthitā babhau ॥03-114-22॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रसन्ना (prasannā) - clear; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; तपसा (tapasā) - by the austerity; तस्य (tasya) - of him; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; पुनः (punar) - again; उन्मज्ज्य (unmajjya) - having emerged; सलिलात् (salilāt) - from the water; वेदीरूपा (vedī-rūpā) - altar-formed; स्थिता (sthitā) - stood; बभौ (babhau) - shone;]
(Then the clear earth, by his austerity, O Pāṇḍava, again having emerged from the water, altar-formed, stood and shone.)
Then, O Pāṇḍava, the clear earth, by his austerity, once again emerged from the water in the form of an altar and stood shining. (03-114-22)
सैषा प्रकाशते राजन्वेदी संस्थानलक्षणा। आरुह्यात्र महाराज वीर्यवान्वै भविष्यसि ॥०३-११४-२३॥
saiṣā prakāśate rājan vedīsaṃsthānalakṣaṇā। āruhyātra mahārāja vīryavānvai bhaviṣyasi ॥03-114-23॥
[सैषा (saiṣā) - this indeed; (feminine singular); प्रकाशते (prakāśate) - shines; manifests; राजन् (rājan) - O king; वेदी (vedī) - altar; संस्थान (saṃsthāna) - structure; arrangement; लक्षणा (lakṣaṇā) - characterized by; marked by; (feminine singular); आरुह्य (āruhya) - having mounted; having ascended; अत्र (atra) - here; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - possessed of strength; mighty; वै (vai) - indeed; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become;]
(This indeed shines, O king, characterized by the arrangement of the altar. Having mounted here, O great king, you will become indeed possessed of strength.)
This, O king, shines forth, marked by the structure of the altar. Ascending here, O great king, you shall truly become mighty. (03-114-23)
अहं च ते स्वस्त्ययनं प्रयोक्ष्ये; यथा त्वमेनामधिरोक्ष्यसेऽद्य। स्पृष्टा हि मर्त्येन ततः समुद्र; मेषा वेदी प्रविशत्याजमीढ ॥०३-११४-२४॥
ahaṃ ca te svastyayanaṃ prayokṣye; yathā tvam enām adhiro kṣyase'dya. spṛṣṭā hi mart yena tataḥ samudra; meṣā vedī praviśaty ājamīḍha ॥03-114-24॥

(I and for you well-being-rite shall perform; so that you her will ascend today. Having been touched indeed by a mortal then, O ocean, the goat the altar enters, O Ajamīḍha.)
I will also perform a well-being rite for you, so that you may ascend her today. For, having been touched by a mortal, then, O ocean, the goat enters the altar, O Ajamīḍha. (03-114-24)
अग्निर्मित्रो योनिरापोऽथ देव्यो; विष्णो रेतस्त्वममृतस्य नाभिः। एवं ब्रुवन्पाण्डव सत्यवाक्यं; वेदीमिमां त्वं तरसाधिरोह ॥०३-११४-२५॥
agnirmitro yonir āpo 'tha devyo; viṣṇo retas tvam amṛtasya nābhiḥ। evaṃ bruvan pāṇḍava satyavākyaṃ; vedīm imāṃ tvaṃ tarasā adhiroha ॥03-114-25॥

(Agni, Mitra, source, waters, also goddesses; O Viṣṇu, seed you, of immortality navel. Thus speaking, O Pāṇḍava, truthful speech; this altar you with force ascend (03-114-25))
O Pāṇḍava, saying 'Agni, Mitra, the source, waters, and the goddesses; O Viṣṇu, you are the seed, the navel of immortality,'—thus, with truthful speech, you ascend this altar with force. (03-114-25)

tataḥ kṛtasvastyayano mahātmā; yudhiṣṭhiraḥ sāgaragāmagacchat। kṛtvā ca tacchāsanam asya sarvaṃ; mahendram āsādya niśāmuvāsa ॥03-114-26॥

(Then, having performed auspicious rites, the great-souled Yudhiṣṭhira went by the road leading to the ocean; and having carried out his (the sage's) entire command, after reaching Mahendra, spent the night.)
Then the great-souled Yudhiṣṭhira, having performed the auspicious rites, set out on the road leading to the ocean; having fulfilled all the sage’s commands, he reached the Mahendra mountain and spent the night there. (03-114-26)
