sa tatra tām-uṣitvā ekāṃ rajanīṃ pṛthivī-patiḥ। tāpasānāṃ paraṃ cakre satkāraṃ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ॥03-115-1॥

(He there, having spent that one night, the lord of the earth performed great honor of the ascetics together with his brothers.)
There, after spending that one night, the lord of the earth, together with his brothers, offered great honor to the ascetics. (03-115-1)
लोमशश्चास्य तान्सर्वानाचख्यौ तत्र तापसान्। भृगूनङ्गिरसश्चैव वासिष्ठानथ काश्यपान् ॥०३-११५-२॥
lomaśaś cāsya tān sarvān ācakhyau tatra tāpasān। bhṛgūn aṅgirasaś caiva vāsiṣṭhān atha kāśyapān॥ 03-115-2॥

(Lomaśa and to him told all those ascetics there—the Bhṛgus, the Aṅgirases, indeed, the Vāsiṣṭhas, and then the Kāśyapas.)
Lomaśa also told him there about all those ascetics—the Bhṛgus, Aṅgirases, Vāsiṣṭhas, and Kāśyapas. (03-115-2)
तान्समेत्य स राजर्षिरभिवाद्य कृताञ्जलिः। रामस्यानुचरं वीरमपृच्छदकृतव्रणम् ॥०३-११५-३॥
tān sametya sa rājarṣir abhivādya kṛtāñjaliḥ। rāmasyānucaraṃ vīram apṛcchad akṛtavraṇam॥03-115-3॥
[तान् (tān) - them; समेत्य (sametya) - having approached; स (sa) - he; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - the royal sage; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having greeted; कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with folded hands; रामस्य (rāmasya) - of Rāma; अनुचरं (anucaram) - the attendant; वीरम् (vīram) - the hero; अपृच्छत् (apṛcchat) - he asked; अकृतव्रणम् (akṛtavraṇam) - unwounded;]
(Them having approached, he the royal sage having greeted, with folded hands, of Rāma the attendant, the hero, he asked, unwounded.)
Having approached them, the royal sage greeted (them) with folded hands and asked the heroic attendant of Rāma, who was unwounded. (03-115-3)
कदा नु रामो भगवांस्तापसान्दर्शयिष्यति। तेनैवाहं प्रसङ्गेन द्रष्टुमिच्छामि भार्गवम् ॥०३-११५-४॥
kadā nu rāmo bhagavāṁs tāpasān darśayiṣyati। tenaiva ahaṁ prasaṅgena draṣṭum icchāmi bhārgavam ॥03-115-4॥
[कदा (kadā) - when; नु (nu) - indeed; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered; तापसान् (tāpasān) - ascetics; दर्शयिष्यति (darśayiṣyati) - will show; तेन एव (tena eva) - by that very (one); अहं (ahaṁ) - I; प्रसङ्गेन (prasaṅgena) - by association; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; भार्गवम् (bhārgavam) - Bhārgava (descendant of Bhṛgu);]
(When indeed will the revered Rāma show the ascetics? By that very (one), I by association wish to see Bhārgava.)
When indeed will the revered Rāma introduce the ascetics? Through him alone, I wish, by association, to see Bhārgava. (03-115-4)
अकृतव्रण उवाच॥

आयानेवासि विदितो रामस्य विदितात्मनः। प्रीतिस्त्वयि च रामस्य क्षिप्रं त्वां दर्शयिष्यति ॥०३-११५-५॥
āyānevāsi vidito rāmasya viditātmanaḥ। prītiḥ tvayi ca rāmasya kṣipraṃ tvāṃ darśayiṣyati ॥03-115-5॥
[आयाने (āyāne) - upon arrival; एव (eva) - indeed; असि (asi) - you are; विदितः (viditaḥ) - known; रामस्य (rāmasya) - to Rāma; विदितात्मनः (viditātmanaḥ) - to the one who knows his own self; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - affection; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; च (ca) - and; रामस्य (rāmasya) - of Rāma; क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; त्वां (tvām) - you; दर्शयिष्यति (darśayiṣyati) - will show;]
(Upon arrival indeed you are known to Rāma, to the one who knows his own self. Affection in you and of Rāma quickly you will show.)
As soon as you arrive, you are known to Rāma, who knows himself. Rāma's affection for you will quickly be shown to you. (03-115-5)
चतुर्दशीमष्टमीं च रामं पश्यन्ति तापसाः। अस्यां रात्र्यां व्यतीतायां भवित्री च चतुर्दशी ॥०३-११५-६॥
caturdaśīmaṣṭamīṃ ca rāmaṃ paśyanti tāpasāḥ। asyāṃ rātryāṃ vyatītāyāṃ bhavitrī́ ca caturdaśī ॥03-115-6॥
[चतुर्दशीमष्टमीं (caturdaśīmaṣṭamīṃ) - the fourteenth and the eighth (tithis); च (ca) - and; रामं (rāmaṃ) - Rāma; पश्यन्ति (paśyanti) - (they) see; तापसाः (tāpasāḥ) - ascetics; अस्यां (asyāṃ) - in this; रात्र्यां (rātryāṃ) - night; व्यतीतायां (vyatītāyāṃ) - when (it is) passed; भवित्री (bhavitrī́) - coming; च (ca) - and; चतुर्दशी (caturdaśī) - the fourteenth (tithi);]
(The ascetics see both the fourteenth and the eighth, and Rāma; when this night has passed, then the fourteenth will occur.)
The ascetics see the fourteenth and eighth tithis as well as Rāma. When this night passes, then the fourteenth will occur. (03-115-6)

भवाननुगतो वीरं जामदग्न्यं महाबलम्। प्रत्यक्षदर्शी सर्वस्य पूर्ववृत्तस्य कर्मणः ॥०३-११५-७॥
bhavān anugato vīraṃ jāmadagnyaṃ mahā-balam। pratyakṣadarśī sarvasya pūrvavṛttasya karmaṇaḥ॥03-115-7॥
[भवान् (bhavān) - you; (honorific second person singular); अनुगतः (anugataḥ) - having followed; having accompanied; वीरम् (vīram) - the hero; (accusative singular masculine); जामदग्न्यम् (jāmadagnyam) - Jāmadagnya (descendant of Jamadagni, i.e., Paraśurāma); महाबलम् (mahā-balam) - of great strength; (accusative singular masculine); प्रत्यक्षदर्शी (pratyakṣadarśī) - one who is a direct witness; perceiver in front; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; of everything; पूर्ववृत्तस्य (pūrvavṛttasya) - of former happening; of previous events; कर्मणः (karmaṇaḥ) - of the acts; of the action;]
(You, having accompanied the heroic Jāmadagnya of great strength, are the direct witness of all previous acts.)
You, having followed the mighty hero Jāmadagnya, are the direct witness of all previous actions. (03-115-7)
स भवान्कथयत्वेतद्यथा रामेण निर्जिताः। आहवे क्षत्रियाः सर्वे कथं केन च हेतुना ॥०३-११५-८॥
sa bhavān kathayatv etad yathā rāmeṇa nirjitāḥ। āhave kṣatriyāḥ sarve kathaṁ kena ca hetunā ॥03-115-8॥
[स (sa) - he; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); कथयतु (kathayatu) - let (you) tell; एतत् (etat) - this; यथा (yathā) - how; रामेण (rāmeṇa) - by Rāma; निर्जिताः (nirjitāḥ) - conquered; आहवे (āhave) - in battle; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - Kṣatriyas (warriors); सर्वे (sarve) - all; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; केन (kena) - by what (means or person); च (ca) - and; हेतुना (hetunā) - by reason;]
(He, you tell this how by Rāma conquered in battle Kṣatriyas all, how, by what and reason.)
You, sir, please tell how all the Kṣatriyas were conquered by Rāma in battle—how, by whom, and for what reason. (03-115-8)

कन्यकुब्जे महानासीत्पार्थिवः सुमहाबलः। गाधीति विश्रुतो लोके वनवासं जगाम सः ॥०३-११५-९॥
kanyakubje mahān āsīt pārthivaḥ sumahābalaḥ। gādhī iti viśrutaḥ loke vanavāsaṃ jagāma saḥ॥03-115-9॥
[कन्यकुब्जे (kanyakubje) - in Kanyakubja; महान् (mahān) - great; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - king; सुमहाबलः (sumahābalaḥ) - of great strength; गाधी (gādhī) - Gādhi; इति (iti) - thus; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - renowned; लोके (loke) - in the world; वनवासं (vanavāsaṃ) - forest-dwelling; जगाम (jagāma) - went; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(In Kanyakubja, great was (the) king of great strength, Gādhi thus renowned in the world; forest-dwelling went he.)
There was a great and mighty king in Kanyakubja, Gādhi by name, renowned in the world; he went to live in the forest. (03-115-9)
वने तु तस्य वसतः कन्या जज्ञेऽप्सरःसमा। ऋचीको भार्गवस्तां च वरयामास भारत ॥०३-११५-१०॥
vane tu tasya vasataḥ kanyā jajñe'psaraḥ-samā। ṛcīko bhārgavas tāṃ ca varayāmāsa bhārata ॥03-115-10॥
[वने (vane) - in the forest; तु (tu) - but; तस्य (tasya) - of him; वसतः (vasataḥ) - dwelling; कन्या (kanyā) - a daughter; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; अप्सरःसमा (apsaraḥ-samā) - equal to an apsaras; ऋचीको (ṛcīkaḥ) - Ṛcīka; भार्गवः (bhārgavaḥ) - the descendant of Bhṛgu; तां (tāṃ) - her; च (ca) - and; वरयामास (varayāmāsa) - chose (for marriage); भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(But in the forest, of him dwelling, a daughter was born, equal to an apsaras. Ṛcīka, the descendant of Bhṛgu, her and chose (for marriage), O Bhārata.)
But as he dwelt in the forest, a daughter was born to him, equal to an apsaras. Ṛcīka, the Bhārgava, chose her for marriage, O Bhārata. (03-115-10)
तमुवाच ततो राजा ब्राह्मणं संशितव्रतम्। उचितं नः कुले किञ्चित्पूर्वैर्यत्सम्प्रवर्तितम् ॥०३-११५-११॥
tam uvāca tato rājā brāhmaṇaṃ saṃśitavratam। ucitaṃ naḥ kule kiñcit pūrvair yat sampravartitam ॥03-115-11॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजा (rājā) - king; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - the Brāhmaṇa; संशितव्रतम् (saṃśitavratam) - of firm vow; उचितम् (ucitam) - proper; नः (naḥ) - for us; कुले (kule) - in the family; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - something; पूर्वैः (pūrvaiḥ) - by the ancestors; यत् (yat) - which; सम्प्रवर्तितम् (sampravartitam) - has been instituted;]
(The king then said to him, the Brāhmaṇa of firm vow: "That which is proper for us in the family, which something has been instituted by the ancestors." (03-115-11))
Then the king said to the Brāhmaṇa of firm vow: "Something proper for us in our family, which has been established by the ancestors." (03-115-11)
एकतः श्यामकर्णानां पाण्डुराणां तरस्विनाम्। सहस्रं वाजिनां शुल्कमिति विद्धि द्विजोत्तम ॥०३-११५-१२॥
ekataḥ śyāmakarṇānāṃ pāṇḍurāṇāṃ tarasvinām। sahasraṃ vājināṃ śulkamiti viddhi dvijottama॥03-115-12॥
[एकतः (ekataḥ) - for one (side); श्यामकर्णानां (śyāmakarṇānāṃ) - of dark-eared; पाण्डुराणां (pāṇḍurāṇāṃ) - of white; तरस्विनाम् (tarasvinām) - of swift; सहस्रं (sahasraṃ) - a thousand; वाजिनां (vājināṃ) - of horses; शुल्कम् (śulkam) - price; इति (iti) - thus; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of twice-born;]
(For one (side), of dark-eared, of white, of swift a thousand horses is the price, thus know, O best of twice-born.)
O best of the twice-born, know that the price for one side of dark-eared and white swift horses is a thousand (horses). (03-115-12)
न चापि भगवान्वाच्यो दीयतामिति भार्गव। देया मे दुहिता चेयं त्वद्विधाय महात्मने ॥०३-११५-१३॥
na cāpi bhagavān-vācyo dīyatām-iti bhārgava। deyā me duhitā ca iyam tvad-vidhāya mahātmane ॥03-115-13॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; वाच्यः (vācyaḥ) - is to be told; दीयताम् (dīyatām) - (let her) be given; इति (iti) - thus; भार्गव (bhārgava) - O descendant of Bhṛgu; देया (deyā) - to be given; मे (me) - my; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; च (ca) - and; इयम् (iyam) - this; त्वद्विधाय (tvad-vidhāya) - to one like you; महात्मने (mahātmane) - to the great-souled one;]
(Nor also should the revered one be told, 'Let her be given,' O Bhārgava. My daughter also, this (one), is to be given to one like you, to the great-souled one.)
Nor, O Bhārgava, should the revered one be told, 'Let her be given.' This my daughter is indeed to be given to a great-souled one like you. (03-115-13)

एकतःश्यामकर्णानां पाण्डुराणां तरस्विनाम्। दास्याम्यश्वसहस्रं ते मम भार्या सुतास्तु ते ॥०३-११५-१४॥
ekataḥ-śyāmakarṇānāṃ pāṇḍurāṇāṃ tarasvinām। dāsyāmy aśva-sahasraṃ te mama bhāryā sutās tu te ॥03-115-14॥
[एकतः (ekataḥ) - on one side; श्यामकर्णानाम् (śyāmakarṇānām) - of dark-eared; पाण्डुराणां (pāṇḍurāṇām) - of white (horses); तरस्विनाम् (tarasvinām) - swift; दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) - I will give; अश्वसहस्रं (aśva-sahasram) - a thousand horses; ते (te) - to you; मम (mama) - my; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; सुताः (sutāḥ) - sons; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - to you;]
(On one side, of dark-eared, white, swift (horses), I will give a thousand horses to you; my wife (and) sons, but, (are) to you.)
On one side, I will give you a thousand swift dark-eared and white horses; but my wife and sons are to you. (03-115-14)

स तथेति प्रतिज्ञाय राजन्वरुणमब्रवीत्। एकतःश्यामकर्णानां पाण्डुराणां तरस्विनाम् ॥ सहस्रं वाजिनामेकं शुल्कार्थं मे प्रदीयताम् ॥०३-११५-१५॥
sa tatheti pratijñāya rājan varuṇam abravīt। ekataḥ śyāmakarṇānāṃ pāṇḍurāṇāṃ tarasvinām ॥ sahasraṃ vājinām ekaṃ śulkārthaṃ me pradīyatām ॥03-115-15॥
[स (sa) - he; तथेति (tatheti) - thus indeed; प्रतिज्ञाय (pratijñāya) - having promised; राजन् (rājan) - O king; वरुणम् (varuṇam) - to Varuṇa; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said; एकतः (ekataḥ) - on one side; श्यामकर्णानाम् (śyāmakarṇānām) - of black-eared; पाण्डुराणाम् (pāṇḍurāṇām) - of white; तरस्विनाम् (tarasvinām) - swift; सहस्रं (sahasram) - a thousand; वाजिनाम् (vājinām) - of horses; एकम् (ekam) - one; शुल्कार्थम् (śulkārtham) - for the sake of a price; मे (me) - to me; प्रदीयताम् (pradīyatām) - let it be given;]
(He, thus indeed, having promised, O king, to Varuṇa, he said: On one side, of black-eared, of white, of swift (horses), a thousand; of horses, one, for the sake of a price, to me, let it be given.)
He, having thus promised, O king, said to Varuṇa: From one side, out of the thousand swift white black-eared horses, let one horse be given to me as the price. (03-115-15)
तस्मै प्रादात्सहस्रं वै वाजिनां वरुणस्तदा। तदश्वतीर्थं विख्यातमुत्थिता यत्र ते हयाः ॥०३-११५-१६॥
tasmai prādāt sahasraṃ vai vājināṃ varuṇas tadā। tad aśvatīrthaṃ vikhyātam utthitā yatra te hayāḥ॥03-115-16॥
[तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; प्रादात् (prādāt) - gave; सहस्रं (sahasraṃ) - a thousand; वै (vai) - indeed; वाजिनां (vājināṃ) - of steeds (horses); वरुणः (varuṇaḥ) - Varuṇa; तदा (tadā) - then; तत् (tat) - that; अश्वतीर्थं (aśvatīrthaṃ) - horse-ford; विख्यातम् (vikhyātam) - famous; उत्थिता (utthitā) - arisen; यत्र (yatra) - where; ते (te) - those; हयाः (hayāḥ) - horses;]
(To him, Varuṇa then gave a thousand of steeds indeed. That horse-ford is famous, where those horses have arisen.)
Varuṇa then gave him a thousand horses. The place where those horses emerged is famous as the horse-ford. (03-115-16)
गङ्गायां कन्यकुब्जे वै ददौ सत्यवतीं तदा। ततो गाधिः सुतां तस्मै जन्याश्चासन्सुरास्तदा ॥ लब्ध्वा हयसहस्रं तु तांश्च दृष्ट्वा दिवौकसः ॥०३-११५-१७॥
gaṅgāyāṃ kanyakubje vai dadau satyavatīṃ tadā। tato gādhiḥ sutāṃ tasmai janyāś cāsan surās tadā॥ labdhvā hayasahasraṃ tu tāṃś ca dṛṣṭvā divaukasaḥ॥03-115-17॥
[गङ्गायाम् (gaṅgāyām) - in the river Gaṅgā; कन्यकुब्जे (kanyakubje) - in (the city of) Kanyakubja; वै (vai) - indeed; ददौ (dadau) - gave; सत्यवतीम् (satyavatīm) - Satyavatī (her name; accusative singular); तदा (tadā) - at that time; ततः (tataḥ) - then; गाधिः (gādhiḥ) - Gādhi (a proper name; nominative singular masculine); सुताम् (sutām) - daughter; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; जन्याः (janyāḥ) - offspring; children; च (ca) - and; अासन् (āsan) - were (they were; 3rd person plural imperfect 'be'); सुराः (surāḥ) - the gods; तदा (tadā) - then; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; हयसहस्रम् (hayasahasram) - a thousand horses; तु (tu) - but; तान् (tān) - them; च (ca) - and; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the dwellers of heaven; the gods;]
(In the river Gaṅgā in Kanyakubja indeed (he) gave Satyavatī at that time. Then Gādhi (had) a daughter for him, and the offspring were the gods then. Having obtained a thousand horses and having seen them, the dwellers of heaven (the gods). (03-115-17))
At that time, in Kanyakubja on the river Gaṅgā, Satyavatī was indeed given. Then Gādhi (had) a daughter for him, and the gods became offspring at that time. Having obtained a thousand horses and having seen them, the gods who dwell in heaven (reacted thus). (03-115-17)
धर्मेण लब्ध्वा तां भार्यामृचीको द्विजसत्तमः। यथाकामं यथाजोषं तया रेमे सुमध्यया ॥०३-११५-१८॥
dharmeṇa labdhvā tāṃ bhāryām ṛcīko dvijasattamaḥ। yathākāmaṃ yathājoṣaṃ tayā reme sumadhyayā॥03-115-18॥
[धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by righteousness; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; तां (tāṃ) - that; भार्याम् (bhāryām) - wife; ऋचीकः (ṛcīkaḥ) - Ṛcīka (proper noun); द्विजसत्तमः (dvijasattamaḥ) - best among the twice-born; यथाकामम् (yathākāmam) - as he wished; यथाजोषम् (yathājoṣam) - with enjoyment; तया (tayā) - with her; रेमे (reme) - he sported; सुमध्यया (sumadhyayā) - with the slender-waisted (woman);]
(By righteousness having obtained that wife, Ṛcīka, best among the twice-born, as he wished, with enjoyment, with her he sported, with the slender-waisted (woman).)
Ṛcīka, best among the twice-born, having obtained that wife righteously, sported with her, the slender-waisted, according to his wish and with full enjoyment. (03-115-18)
तं विवाहे कृते राजन्सभार्यमवलोककः। आजगाम भृगुश्रेष्ठः पुत्रं दृष्ट्वा ननन्द च ॥०३-११५-१९॥
taṃ vivāhe kṛte rājan sabhāryam avalokakaḥ। ājagāma bhṛguśreṣṭhaḥ putraṃ dṛṣṭvā nananda ca॥03-115-19॥

(Him, at the marriage having been performed, O king, with his wife the beholder, arrived the foremost among Bhṛgus; seeing the son, was delighted and.)

भार्यापती तमासीनं गुरुं सुरगणार्चितम्। अर्चित्वा पर्युपासीनौ प्राञ्जली तस्थतुस्तदा ॥०३-११५-२०॥
bhāryāpatī tam āsīnaṃ guruṃ suragaṇārcitam। arcitvā paryupāsīnāu prāñjalī tasthatus tadā ॥03-115-20॥
[भार्यापती (bhāryāpatī) - the husband and wife; (lit. wife and husband;) तम् (tam) - him; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - seated; गुरुम् (gurum) - the venerable one; (teacher;) सुरगणा-अर्चितम् (suragaṇārcitam) - worshipped by the hosts of gods; अर्चित्वा (arcitvā) - having worshipped; पर्युपासीनौ (paryupāsīnāu) - having reverently approached and sat; प्राञ्जली (prāñjalī) - with joined palms; तस्थतुः (tasthatuḥ) - both stood; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(The husband and wife, having worshipped him, the venerable one worshipped by the hosts of gods, who was seated, reverently approached, with joined palms, then both stood.)
The husband and wife worshipped the venerable teacher, who was seated and honored by the gods; after worshipping him, they reverently approached, stood there with joined palms at that time. (03-115-20)
ततः स्नुषां स भगवान्प्रहृष्टो भृगुरब्रवीत्। वरं वृणीष्व सुभगे दाता ह्यस्मि तवेप्सितम् ॥०३-११५-२१॥
tataḥ snuṣāṃ sa bhagavān prahṛṣṭo bhṛgur abravīt। varaṃ vṛṇīṣva subhage dātā hy asmi tav epsitam॥03-115-21॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स्नुषां (snuṣām) - to daughter-in-law; स (sa) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; प्रहृष्टः (prahṛṣṭaḥ) - delighted; भृगुः (bhṛguḥ) - Bhṛgu; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; वरं (varaṃ) - a boon; वृणीष्व (vṛṇīṣva) - choose; सुभगे (subhage) - O fortunate one; दाता (dātā) - giver; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; तव (tava) - your; इप्सितम् (ipsitam) - desired;]
(Then to (his) daughter-in-law, he, the venerable (and) delighted Bhṛgu, spoke: "A boon choose, O fortunate one. Giver indeed I am of your desired (thing)." (03-115-21))
Then the venerable and delighted Bhṛgu spoke to his daughter-in-law: "O fortunate one, choose a boon; I am indeed the giver of your desire." (03-115-21)
सा वै प्रसादयामास तं गुरुं पुत्रकारणात्। आत्मनश्चैव मातुश्च प्रसादं च चकार सः ॥०३-११५-२२॥
sā vai prasādayāmāsa taṃ guruṃ putrakāraṇāt। ātmanashcaiva mātuśca prasādaṃ ca cakāra saḥ ॥03-115-22॥
[सा (sā) - she; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रसादयामास (prasādayāmāsa) - caused to be pleased; तं (taṃ) - him; गुरुं (guruṃ) - teacher; पुत्रकारणात् (putrakāraṇāt) - on account of (her) son; आत्मनः (ātmanas) - of herself; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - even; मातुः (mātuḥ) - of (her) mother; च (ca) - and; प्रसादं (prasādam) - favor; च (ca) - and; चकार (cakāra) - made (to conciliate, sought to obtain); सः (saḥ) - he;]
(She indeed caused that teacher to be pleased on account of her son. Of herself and even of her mother, favor also he made (to conciliate, sought to obtain). (03-115-22))
She indeed sought to please the teacher on account of her son, and he also sought the favor of both herself and her mother. (03-115-22)

ऋतौ त्वं चैव माता च स्नाते पुंसवनाय वै। आलिङ्गेतां पृथग्वृक्षौ साश्वत्थं त्वमुदुम्बरम् ॥०३-११५-२३॥
ṛtau tvaṃ caiva mātā ca snāte puṃsavanāya vai। āliṅgetāṃ pṛthag-vṛkṣau sa-aśvatthaṃ tvam-udumbaram ॥03-115-23॥
[ऋतौ (ṛtau) - in season; (at the proper time); त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; (emphatic particle); माता (mātā) - the mother; (your mother); च (ca) - and; स्नाते (snāte) - having bathed; पुंसवनाय (puṃsavanāya) - for the puṃsavana rite; (ceremony for begetting a son); वै (vai) - indeed; (certainly); आलिङ्गेताम् (āliṅgetām) - they should embrace; पृथग्वृक्षौ (pṛthag-vṛkṣau) - the two separate trees; साश्वत्थम् (sa-aśvattham) - with the aśvattha tree (sacred fig); त्वम् (tvam) - you; उदुम्बरम् (udumbaram) - the udumbara tree (Ficus racemosa);]
(In season you and indeed the mother, having bathed, for the puṃsavana rite indeed, should embrace the two separate trees—with the aśvattha tree you (embrace) the udumbara tree.)
During the proper season, you and your mother, after bathing for the puṃsavana rite, should each embrace separate trees: you (the aśvattha) and your mother (the udumbara). (03-115-23)
आलिङ्गने तु ते राजंश्चक्रतुः स्म विपर्ययम्। कदाचिद्भृगुरागच्छत्तं च वेद विपर्ययम् ॥०३-११५-२४॥
āliṅgane tu te rājan cakratuḥ sma viparyayam। kadācit bhṛgur āgacchat taṃ ca veda viparyayam ॥03-115-24॥
[आलिङ्गने (āliṅgane) - in embrace; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - they; राजन् (rājan) - O king; चक्रतुः (cakratuḥ) - they did; स्म (sma) - indeed (particle indicating past); विपर्ययम् (viparyayam) - reversal; कदाचित् (kadācit) - at some time; भृगुः (bhṛguḥ) - Bhrigu; आगच्छत् (āgacchat) - came; तं (taṃ) - him; च (ca) - and; वेद (veda) - knows; विपर्ययम् (viparyayam) - reversal;]
(In embrace, but, they, O king, indeed did reversal. At some time Bhrigu came, him and knows reversal.)
But, O king, in their embrace, they indeed committed a reversal. At some time, Bhrigu came and knows that reversal concerning him. (03-115-24)
अथोवाच महातेजा भृगुः सत्यवतीं स्नुषाम्। ब्राह्मणः क्षत्रवृत्तिर्वै तव पुत्रो भविष्यति ॥०३-११५-२५॥
athovāca mahātejā bhṛguḥ satyavatīṃ snuṣām। brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatravṛttir vai tava putro bhaviṣyati॥03-115-25॥
[अथ (atha) - then; उवाच (uvāca) - said; महातेजा (mahātejā) - of great splendour; भृगुः (bhṛguḥ) - Bhṛgu (the sage); सत्यवतीं (satyavatīṃ) - Satyavatī (accusative); स्नुषाम् (snuṣām) - daughter-in-law; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a Brāhmaṇa; क्षत्रवृत्तिः (kṣatravṛttiḥ) - with a kṣatriya’s conduct; वै (vai) - indeed; तव (tava) - your; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Then said the great-splendoured Bhṛgu to Satyavatī, the daughter-in-law: "A Brāhmaṇa, with a kṣatriya’s conduct indeed, your son will be.")
Then the great and radiant Bhṛgu said to Satyavatī, his daughter-in-law: "Your son will be a Brāhmaṇa with the conduct of a kṣatriya." (03-115-25)
क्षत्रियो ब्राह्मणाचारो मातुस्तव सुतो महान्। भविष्यति महावीर्यः साधूनां मार्गमास्थितः ॥०३-११५-२६॥
kṣatriyo brāhmaṇācāro mātus tava suto mahān। bhaviṣyati mahāvīryaḥ sādhūnāṃ mārgam āsthitaḥ॥03-115-26॥
[क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - a kṣatriya; ब्राह्मणाचारः (brāhmaṇācāraḥ) - having the conduct of a brāhmaṇa; मातुः (mātuḥ) - of the mother; तव (tava) - your; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; महान् (mahān) - great; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; महावीर्यः (mahāvīryaḥ) - of great energy; साधूनाम् (sādhūnām) - of the righteous; मार्गम् (mārgam) - path; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - abiding in;]
(A kṣatriya, having the conduct of a brāhmaṇa, of the mother your son, great, will be, of great energy, of the righteous path abiding in.)
Your son by the mother, who is a kṣatriya with the conduct of a brāhmaṇa, will be great, full of great energy, and will follow the path of the righteous. (03-115-26)
ततः प्रसादयामास श्वशुरं सा पुनः पुनः। न मे पुत्रो भवेदीदृक्कामं पौत्रो भवेदिति ॥०३-११५-२७॥
tataḥ prasādayāmāsa śvaśuraṃ sā punaḥ punaḥ। na me putro bhaved īdṛk kāmam pautro bhaved iti॥03-115-27॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रसादयामास (prasādayāmāsa) - she entreated; श्वशुरं (śvaśuram) - father-in-law; सा (sā) - she; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; ईदृक् (īdṛk) - such (as this); कामं (kāmam) - truly; पौत्रः (pautraḥ) - grandson; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Then she entreated father-in-law again and again: "Not to me may a son be such; truly, may a grandson be thus." (03-115-27))
Then she pleaded with her father-in-law again and again, saying: "May I not have such a son; truly, may I have a grandson like this." (03-115-27)
एवमस्त्विति सा तेन पाण्डव प्रतिनन्दिता। जमदग्निं ततः पुत्रं सा जज्ञे काल आगते ॥ तेजसा वर्चसा चैव युक्तं भार्गवनन्दनम् ॥०३-११५-२८॥
evam astv iti sā tena pāṇḍava pratinanditā। jamadagniṃ tataḥ putraṃ sā jajñe kāla āgate॥ tejasā varcasā caiva yuktaṃ bhārgavanandanam॥03-115-28॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; इति (iti) - thus; सा (sā) - she; तेन (tena) - by him; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O descendant of Paṇḍu; प्रतिनन्दिता (pratinanditā) - was replied; जमदग्निं (jamadagniṃ) - Jamadagni; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; पुत्रं (putraṃ) - son; सा (sā) - she; जज्ञे (jajñe) - gave birth; काल (kāla) - time; आगते (āgate) - having come; तेजसा (tejasā) - with energy; वर्चसा (varcasā) - with splendor; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; युक्तं (yuktaṃ) - endowed; भार्गवनन्दनम् (bhārgavanandanam) - son of Bhṛgu;]
(Thus let it be—she thus replied by him, O Pāṇḍava. Then, at the coming of the time, she gave birth to Jamadagni, a son endowed with energy and splendor, indeed, the son of Bhṛgu.)
"Let it be so"—thus, addressed by him, O Pāṇḍava, she then gave birth, when the proper time arrived, to Jamadagni, a son endowed with energy and splendor, truly the son of Bhṛgu. (03-115-28)
स वर्धमानस्तेजस्वी वेदस्याध्ययनेन वै। बहूनृषीन्महातेजाः पाण्डवेयात्यवर्तत ॥०३-११५-२९॥
sa vardhamānas tejasvī vedasyādhyayanena vai। bahūn ṛṣīn mahātejāḥ pāṇḍaveya atyavartata ॥03-115-29॥
[स (sa) - he; वर्धमानः (vardhamānaḥ) - growing; increasing; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - brilliant; possessing energy; वेदस्य (vedasya) - of the Veda; अध्ययनेन (adhyayanena) - by study; वै (vai) - indeed; बहून् (bahūn) - many; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - sages; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - one of great brilliance; पाण्डवेय (pāṇḍaveya) - the descendant of Pandu; अत्यवर्तत (atyavartata) - surpassed; excelled;]
(He, growing, brilliant, by study of the Veda indeed, many sages, the one of great brilliance, the descendant of Pandu, surpassed.)
He, the descendant of Pandu, who grew in brilliance, indeed surpassed many sages by his study of the Veda. (03-115-29)
तं तु कृत्स्नो धनुर्वेदः प्रत्यभाद्भरतर्षभ। चतुर्विधानि चास्त्राणि भास्करोपमवर्चसम् ॥०३-११५-३०॥
taṃ tu kṛtsno dhanurvedaḥ pratyabhādbharatarṣabha. caturvidhāni cāstrāṇi bhāskaropamavarcasam ॥03-115-30॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; तु (tu) - but; कृत्स्नः (kṛtsnaḥ) - entire; धनुर्वेदः (dhanurvedaḥ) - science of archery; प्रत्यभात् (pratyabhāt) - became manifest; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull of the Bharatas; चतुर्विधानि (caturvidhāni) - of four kinds; च (ca) - and; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - missiles; भास्कर-उपम-वर्चसम् (bhāskara-upama-varcasam) - having brilliance comparable to the sun;]
(Him but entire science of archery became manifest, O bull of the Bharatas. Of four kinds also missiles (having) brilliance comparable to the sun.)
But the entire science of archery became manifest to him, O bull of the Bharatas, along with the four kinds of missiles, whose brilliance was like that of the sun. (03-115-30)
